unfortunately you and I we've been lied
  • 00:00:02
to and it's on a really important topic
  • 00:00:05
and that is if we choose to retire early
  • 00:00:09
is that likely going to extend our
  • 00:00:11
lifespan or is it going to shorten our
  • 00:00:13
lifespan and many of us have heard both
  • 00:00:17
    but fortunately there's been some
  • 00:00:18
studies that have been done and in
  • 00:00:20
today's video I want to share with you
  • 00:00:22
what the facts say and then I'm going to
  • 00:00:25
wrap up and kind of share my thoughts
  • 00:00:27
based on those facts Okay so so two of
  • 00:00:30
these reports two of these reports come
  • 00:00:33
from things that happened in the
  • 00:00:35
Netherlands one was uh a change in the
  • 00:00:38
retirement age in the Netherlands that
  • 00:00:40
allowed people to retire sooner for a
  • 00:00:43
short period of time and then later
  • 00:00:45
there was a study when the Dutch wanted
  • 00:00:49
people to continue working so they they
  • 00:00:51
changed the tax law to incentivize
  • 00:00:54
people to work longer so we have both of
  • 00:00:56
those studies and then we also have a
  • 00:00:58
study by an HR or organization here in
  • 00:01:01
the United States that surveyed folks
  • 00:01:04
that chose to retire early so let's jump
  • 00:01:06
in let's do the first study by the Dutch
  • 00:01:09
and this is one where people were
  • 00:01:11
encouraged to retire early and I was
  • 00:01:14
able to jump on a a research Library Pub
  • 00:01:17
Med actually pulled pulled down the
  • 00:01:19
report and and the study is called the
  • 00:01:22
causal effect of retirement on mortality
  • 00:01:25
    evidence from targeted incentives to
  • 00:01:28
retire early this is the Dutch system
  • 00:01:29
system when they allowed people to
  • 00:01:32
retire like here in the US instead of a
  • 00:01:34
normal retirement age of 65 their their
  • 00:01:37
system changed where Dutch people could
  • 00:01:39
retire sooner than that and it it only
  • 00:01:42
was in effect for a short period of time
  • 00:01:44
but here's what the summary of that is
  • 00:01:47
and they go on to say that we find that
  • 00:01:51
    induced early retirement decreases the
  • 00:01:54
probability that a man dies within 5
  • 00:01:57
    years by 2.6%
  • 00:02:00
points which is significant right the
  • 00:02:02
second study I want to go through is
  • 00:02:05
from the HR department uh they they also
  • 00:02:08
have a research organization it's the
  • 00:02:10
    Journal of human
  • 00:02:12
    resources and it's the health
  • 00:02:14
    consequences of early retirement and
  • 00:02:17
both of these studies say that you know
  • 00:02:19
it's really hard to to actually pinpoint
  • 00:02:22
whether it's cause or effect right but
  • 00:02:25
here's what the the Journal of Human
  • 00:02:27
    Resources Reports say the results
  • 00:02:30
    indicate that retirement's effect on
  • 00:02:32
    health is beneficial and significant
  • 00:02:36
    investigation into behavioral data such
  • 00:02:38
as smoking and exercise suggests that
  • 00:02:41
    retirement may affect Health through
  • 00:02:43
those channels encouraging people to be
  • 00:02:45
    healthier with additional Leisure Time
  • 00:02:47
    many retirees practice healthier habits
  • 00:02:51
so I wanted before we jump into the the
  • 00:02:53
third study uh which was done here in
  • 00:02:56
the US by the Retirement Research Center
  • 00:02:59
for re research um I want to jump into
  • 00:03:02
an article by CNBC make it where they
  • 00:03:05
summarize some of these some of these
  • 00:03:07
findings and the headline of the article
  • 00:03:10
is you can live longer if you retire
  • 00:03:12
early here's why and they describe this
  • 00:03:16
study male Dutch civil servants over the
  • 00:03:19
age of 54 who retired early were an
  • 00:03:22
astounding 42% less likely to die over
  • 00:03:26
the subsequent 5 years compared to those
  • 00:03:28
    who continued working
  • 00:03:30
and there were too few women to to be in
  • 00:03:32
that study okay let's keep going and
  • 00:03:35
then they talk about the reasons why
  • 00:03:37
that might be it it it frees up retirees
  • 00:03:40
allowing more time to invest in your
  • 00:03:42
health and that benefits you whether
  • 00:03:44
you're sleeping more exercising more or
  • 00:03:47
simply going to a doctor as soon as an
  • 00:03:49
issue arises and then second the second
  • 00:03:52
reason the article States is second
  • 00:03:54
where can be stressful and you've heard
  • 00:03:56
me talk about this right it's the it's
  • 00:03:58
the pressure on your shoulder ERS it's
  • 00:04:01
that you you carry it's it's having
  • 00:04:03
deadlines it's having to put up with
  • 00:04:05
commuting work is just stressful and
  • 00:04:08
retiring can alleviate some of that
  • 00:04:10
    stress and stress unfortunately can
  • 00:04:12
cause hypertension high blood pressure a
  • 00:04:14
risk factor for various fatal conditions
  • 00:04:17
and retirees in this study were
  • 00:04:19
significantly less likely to die from
  • 00:04:22
    stroke or from cardiovascular disease
  • 00:04:25
okay I'm starting to feel really good
  • 00:04:27
right so let's let's keep going G um so
  • 00:04:31
CNBC the first two articles that's good
  • 00:04:33
news it says that if we retire early
  • 00:04:36
    there's a good chance there's no
  • 00:04:37
guarantees but there's a good chance
  • 00:04:39
that it's going to be beneficial to our
  • 00:04:41
    healthy lifespan and our overall
  • 00:04:44
lifespan okay and those those studies
  • 00:04:46
were done in the 2018 2020 timeline and
  • 00:04:51
now we're going to come to May of 2021
  • 00:04:55
this is from the center for re for
  • 00:04:57
Retirement Research which is done at
  • 00:05:00
Boston College and the research paper is
  • 00:05:03
called do men who work longer live
  • 00:05:06
longer evidence from the Netherlands so
  • 00:05:09
before the earlier study in the
  • 00:05:12
Netherlands Dutch people were able to
  • 00:05:15
retire earlier they changed the law for
  • 00:05:17
a little bit of time but in this study
  • 00:05:20
what happened is they use they use the
  • 00:05:22
carot they incentivized people they gave
  • 00:05:24
    people tax incentives to continue
  • 00:05:27
working longer right so it was it was a
  • 00:05:30
carrot both cases it was a carrot okay
  • 00:05:33
so here's here's the the center for
  • 00:05:36
Retirement Research use the data from
  • 00:05:39
    this second Dutch
  • 00:05:41
situation and and first off they talk
  • 00:05:43
about why is the effect of work on
  • 00:05:46
mortality hard to measure a simple
  • 00:05:49
estimate would likely find that work
  • 00:05:51
lives and lower mortality rate are
  • 00:05:54
correlated in other words if you
  • 00:05:56
continue to work you're going to live
  • 00:05:57
longer is what a simple study would say
  • 00:05:59
say but the question is does working
  • 00:06:02
cause the worker to live longer the
  • 00:06:05
effect could actually work in the
  • 00:06:07
    opposite direction Better Health may
  • 00:06:09
cause people to keep working so
  • 00:06:11
healthier people have the freedom to
  • 00:06:13
continue working in addition some other
  • 00:06:16
factors such as income could cause both
  • 00:06:18
better health and a desire to keep
  • 00:06:21
working so you can see where these are
  • 00:06:22
intertwined so it's not an easy
  • 00:06:25
question okay using the door work bonus
  • 00:06:28
as a natural experiment the door work
  • 00:06:31
bonus policy in the Netherlands use tax
  • 00:06:34
    incentives to encourage working longer
  • 00:06:37
and this presents an ideal opportunity
  • 00:06:39
for a study like this um and their
  • 00:06:42
conclusion is the results indicate that
  • 00:06:45
Dutch men ages 62 to 65 induced to work
  • 00:06:49
by the policy change do live longer
  • 00:06:53
    their mortality rate their mortality
  • 00:06:56
Falls at a rate that implies at least
  • 00:06:59
two extra months of longevity and up to
  • 00:07:02
two years if the effect is longer
  • 00:07:05
lasting okay so we were doing pretty
  • 00:07:07
well right we had all kinds of good news
  • 00:07:09
so so what do I think of this I think
  • 00:07:13
what really matters is is you know why
  • 00:07:15
you choose to retire if you're choosing
  • 00:07:17
to retire early because you have a
  • 00:07:19
health issue obviously you know I think
  • 00:07:21
that's probably a wise decision if you
  • 00:07:23
can afford to retire right because you
  • 00:07:25
have less time to enjoy your retirement
  • 00:07:28
but obviously that's going to impact U
  • 00:07:31
how you spend your time in retirement
  • 00:07:33
but I think why you retire and
  • 00:07:35
unfortunately over 40% report that they
  • 00:07:39
did not choose when to retire they
  • 00:07:40
either got laid off from their job they
  • 00:07:42
had a health issue maybe they had a a
  • 00:07:45
adult child a younger child or an aging
  • 00:07:48
parent that they had to take take care
  • 00:07:50
of but you know losing your job quitting
  • 00:07:53
your job can be stressful unless you're
  • 00:07:55
prepared for it and it's something that
  • 00:07:57
you wanted to do so I think part of it
  • 00:08:00
is it depends on why you retired and it
  • 00:08:03
also depends on what you do in
  • 00:08:05
retirement if you use retirement as a
  • 00:08:08
chance to to take full advantage of the
  • 00:08:11
Youth of your senior years and to do
  • 00:08:13
these things that you've held off for
  • 00:08:15
years to do I think it's going to be a
  • 00:08:17
great thing and and I've been a
  • 00:08:19
financial adviser for over two decades
  • 00:08:22
now and that's what I've seen the vast
  • 00:08:24
majority of people are excited that they
  • 00:08:26
chose to retire early and the secret is
  • 00:08:29
is finding new purpose in retirement and
  • 00:08:33
that can be scary right that there's
  • 00:08:35
there's two challenges to being able to
  • 00:08:37
retire one is the financial Challenge
  • 00:08:40
and that's not easy uh that's a tough
  • 00:08:42
challenge but the other one is the
  • 00:08:44
    mental challenge getting ready finding
  • 00:08:46
    your new
  • 00:08:48
purpose so that so that you're excited
  • 00:08:50
to get up in the morning so that life
  • 00:08:52
continues to be an adventure so it's an
  • 00:08:55
    enormously uh important decision and
  • 00:08:58
it's important how how you transition
  • 00:09:00
into retirement and that's why I made
  • 00:09:03
this video here that talks about what's
  • 00:09:05
the right time to retire and maybe you
  • 00:09:08
want to think about retiring early
  • 00:09:10
retiring at 65 why that might be a big
  • 00:09:13
mistake thanks for watching this video
  • 00:09:15
and I'll see you in that one
