captivating history
00:00:04
the story of davy crockett sits at the
00:00:06
intersection of american mythology and
00:00:09
historical fact
00:00:10
a very real man crockett even served in
00:00:13
the united states house of
00:00:14
representatives however his achievements
00:00:17
on the expanding western frontier truly
00:00:19
set his reputation apart
00:00:22
myths did not emerge on their own
00:00:24
crockett was well aware of the
00:00:26
usefulness of his reputation as a quaint
00:00:28
yet brave frontiersman
00:00:30
when he ran for national office his
00:00:32
campaign speeches were filled with
00:00:34
homespun wisdom and rural metaphors
00:00:37
the image he cultivated was so evocative
00:00:40
that legends rose around him while he
00:00:42
was still alive davey came from a poor
00:00:45
french huguenot family
00:00:47
davy's grandparents had immigrated to
00:00:49
ireland and changed the family name from
00:00:51
the crocotanie to crockett it's a good
00:00:54
thing they did it is hard to imagine
00:00:56
davey successfully fostering his rural
00:00:59
hunter image with such an aristocratic
00:01:01
sounding french name
00:01:03
his father john crockett was born in
00:01:05
virginia
00:01:06
he fought in the revolutionary war and
00:01:08
was involved in the battle of kings
00:01:10
mountain
00:01:11
davey was born in 1786 in greene county
00:01:14
north carolina today it is part of
00:01:17
tennessee but at the time the area was
00:01:19
within the jurisdiction of north
00:01:21
carolina
00:01:22
john ran a grist mill but it was
00:01:24
destroyed in a flood along with family
00:01:26
home
00:01:27
in 1795 he was forced to declare
00:01:30
bankruptcy
00:01:31
the poverty his family experienced was
00:01:34
so severe that john indentured his son
00:01:36
to a man named jacob seiler
00:01:39
growing in the backwoods little davey
00:01:41
had almost no formal education
00:01:43
it didn't help that he was a wild child
00:01:46
and was often truant when enrolled in
00:01:48
school
00:01:49
so instead he received 100 days worth of
00:01:51
tutoring from an educated neighbor
00:01:54
john tried to force the boy into school
00:01:56
but davey was headstrong he went off to
00:01:58
make his way in the world
00:02:00
as a young man crockett worked as an
00:02:02
extra farmhand or engaged in driving
00:02:05
cattle
00:02:06
finally however he returned to the
00:02:08
family home and helped his father pay
00:02:09
off the family debts
00:02:11
there was nothing conventional about
00:02:13
davy crockett
00:02:15
his love life illustrates this fact
00:02:17
one of his many jobs was on the property
00:02:19
of john kennedy there he fell in love
00:02:22
with kennedy's niece amy summer it was
00:02:25
just one problem she was engaged to mary
00:02:27
kennedy's son
00:02:29
the undeterred crockett convinced one of
00:02:31
the wedding guests to marry him but she
00:02:33
married someone else instead davey ended
00:02:36
up marrying another woman polly finley
00:02:39
against the wishes of her family
00:02:41
they had three children one of whom
00:02:43
followed his father to represent
00:02:44
tennessee in the house of
00:02:45
representatives
00:02:47
unfortunately polly died in 1815 he then
00:02:50
married elizabeth patton a local widow
00:02:53
and had three more children with her
00:02:55
like many notable figures of the late
00:02:57
18th and early 19th centuries crockett
00:03:00
entered public life through military
00:03:02
service
00:03:03
in 1813 creek warriors stormed fort mims
00:03:06
in a modern day alabama and slaughtered
00:03:09
almost all of its inhabitants
00:03:11
the incident was used to rally support
00:03:13
for the creek war a complex conflict
00:03:16
that pitted factions of the creek tribe
00:03:18
against each other
00:03:19
american troops supported the lower
00:03:21
creeks who were under the command of
00:03:23
andrew jackson
00:03:24
meanwhile the red stick creeks were
00:03:26
aided by the british and spanish
00:03:28
crockett joined the tennessee militia
00:03:30
and participated in the fighting however
00:03:33
he later remarked that he felt more
00:03:35
comfortable hunting game in alabama than
00:03:37
fighting native americans
00:03:39
nonetheless he remained an enlisted man
00:03:42
and continued to serve under jackson's
00:03:43
command
00:03:44
but eventually croc get tired of
00:03:46
military life and paid a poor laborer to
00:03:49
take his place in active duty until his
00:03:51
official release in 1815
00:03:53
while crockett's military career was
00:03:55
somewhat flawed it inspired him to
00:03:57
engage in further public service
00:04:00
he was soon appointed commissioner and
00:04:02
helped establish the boundaries of the
00:04:04
newly established lawrence county
00:04:05
tennessee
00:04:07
this was just the start of his rapid
00:04:09
rise in local politics
00:04:11
in 1817 crockett was appointed justice
00:04:14
of the peace
00:04:15
the following year he won the role of
00:04:17
lieutenant colonel of the 57th regiment
00:04:19
of tennessee militia
00:04:21
after a few years of focusing on
00:04:23
successful business ventures davey
00:04:25
returned to public office in 1821
00:04:28
he represented lawrence and hickman
00:04:30
counties in the tennessee general
00:04:32
assembly
00:04:33
in general his preferences were informed
00:04:35
by john crockett's difficulties in
00:04:37
providing for his family on the
00:04:38
tennessee frontier
00:04:40
crockett adopted populist policies and
00:04:43
opposed high tax burdens for the poor
00:04:46
needless to say these policies won him
00:04:48
the fierce loyalty of many smaller
00:04:50
landowners and agricultural workers in
00:04:52
lawrence and hickman counties and
00:04:54
throughout the state however davey's
00:04:57
political tendencies also want him some
00:04:59
powerful enemies
00:05:00
they would eventually prove to be his
00:05:02
political undoing
00:05:04
remarkably crockett rose from the
00:05:06
backwoods to a prominent role on the
00:05:08
national stage nonetheless his political
00:05:11
career was anything but a
00:05:13
straightforward success
00:05:15
he ran for a seat in the house of
00:05:16
representatives several times
00:05:19
davey lost his first election in 1825
00:05:22
however he won twice in a row in 1827
00:05:25
and two years later
00:05:27
in 1831 the determined campaigner lost
00:05:30
to william fitzgerald however crockett
00:05:32
made a comeback and narrowly defeated
00:05:34
fitzgerald in 1833 before finally being
00:05:38
ousted in the 1835 elections after a
00:05:41
painful defeat to adam huntsman
00:05:43
while davey proved an able public
00:05:45
servant he also spent a good deal of
00:05:47
effort on self-promotion
00:05:49
he wrote books and gave speeches
00:05:51
promoting his image as a wild yet
00:05:53
lovable frontiersman
00:05:55
in 1834 crockett published an
00:05:57
autobiography titled a narrative of the
00:06:00
life of david crockett written by
00:06:02
himself
00:06:03
however the title was misleading the
00:06:05
book was completed with the assistance
00:06:07
of political ally thomas chilton u.s
00:06:10
representative for kentucky
00:06:12
the book focused on crockett's life on
00:06:14
the frontier it played down his
00:06:16
political career as well as his many
00:06:18
successful business ventures
00:06:20
though quite popular in tennessee
00:06:22
crockett's political ambitions were
00:06:24
ultimately thwarted by andrew jackson
00:06:26
and his supporters
00:06:27
indeed jackson was a strong presence in
00:06:30
tennessee politics
00:06:32
after cementing his military reputation
00:06:34
the future president was also one of the
00:06:36
founders of memphis
00:06:38
the rift with the jacksonians commenced
00:06:40
in 1821 when the tennessee politician
00:06:43
supported whig william carroll for
00:06:45
governor over edward ward
00:06:47
in the short term the gamble paid off
00:06:50
carol won the election and rewarded
00:06:52
crockett for his support
00:06:53
however jackson did not forget the snub
00:06:56
from his former subordinate
00:06:58
the rift deepened further in 1823 when
00:07:00
he ran against jackson's nephew in law
00:07:03
william edward butler for the tennessee
00:07:05
general assembly and won
00:07:07
but crockett had no idea how powerful an
00:07:10
enemy he had made or how deeply jackson
00:07:12
held the grudge
00:07:14
in 1824 jackson first ran for president
00:07:18
although he won a plurality of the
00:07:19
popular vote and the electoral college
00:07:22
the whig john quincy adams won the
00:07:24
presidency
00:07:25
however if crockett thought he had
00:07:27
dodged a bullet he was sorely mistaken
00:07:30
jackson easily defeated adams in 1828
00:07:34
the upstart representative insisted on
00:07:36
the rights of settlers squatting on
00:07:37
government claimed land in western
00:07:39
tennessee
00:07:40
however due to his opposition to jackson
00:07:43
the tennessee politician was generally
00:07:45
supported by the whig party
00:07:47
crockett also opposed the president and
00:07:49
the military by taking a bold stand to
00:07:52
close the west point academy
00:07:54
he believed that it provided an unfair
00:07:56
avenue to power for the scions of rich
00:07:58
and powerful families
00:08:00
perhaps the most commendable step davey
00:08:03
took in his political career was his
00:08:05
opposition to the indian removal act of
00:08:07
1830 which was sponsored by president
00:08:10
jackson
00:08:11
davey was the only member of the
00:08:13
tennessee delegation to oppose the
00:08:14
measure
00:08:16
although the cherokees were deeply
00:08:17
grateful for the lawmakers support many
00:08:20
tennessee constituents were appalled by
00:08:22
this vote
00:08:23
it contributed heavily to his defeat in
00:08:25
1831
00:08:27
after losing the disappointed former
00:08:29
congressman was unsure of his next move
00:08:32
the claims of texas applying for
00:08:34
statehood captured crockett's
00:08:35
imagination
00:08:37
he told his friends that if the
00:08:38
jacksonian martin van buren won the 1836
00:08:41
elections he would head to texas and
00:08:44
lead a revolution in the territory
00:08:46
when the little magician captured the
00:08:48
white house davey lived up to his
00:08:50
promise
00:08:51
as he told a reporter
00:08:53
i told the people of my district that i
00:08:55
would serve them as faithfully as i had
00:08:57
done but if not they might go to hell
00:08:59
and i would go to texas
00:09:02
crockett was a popular and charismatic
00:09:04
figure and used his appeal to gather
00:09:06
volunteers for the texting cause
00:09:09
finally he went with some supporters to
00:09:11
give a speech at the madison county
00:09:13
courthouse
00:09:14
hundreds of curious onlookers heard his
00:09:16
words in favor of texan independence
00:09:19
in early 1836 crockett arrived in texas
00:09:22
and pledged allegiance to the
00:09:24
provisional texas government
00:09:26
he signed an oath with the other
00:09:27
volunteers that read i have taken the
00:09:29
oath of government and have enrolled my
00:09:31
name as a volunteer and will set out for
00:09:33
the rio grande in a few days with the
00:09:35
volunteers from the united states
00:09:38
on february 8th he arrived at the alamo
00:09:40
mission in san antonio
00:09:42
the alamo at that time was an essential
00:09:45
feature in the military plans of the
00:09:46
budding texas republic
00:09:48
what had started as a spanish mission
00:09:50
had become a fortified barracks as
00:09:52
locals battled to maintain their
00:09:54
security against roving bands of apache
00:09:57
in 1821 the complex was transferred from
00:10:00
spain to mexico
00:10:02
however in 1835 texas rebels seized the
00:10:05
fortress from the mexican forces and
00:10:07
turned it into a stronghold
00:10:10
two weeks after davey's arrival at the
00:10:11
alamo a mexican army led by antonio
00:10:14
lopez de santa anna arrived on the scene
00:10:17
the surprised garrison found itself
00:10:19
under siege by the large and powerful
00:10:22
force
00:10:23
santa ana's forces found themselves
00:10:25
under fierce fire from the defenders
00:10:27
however they drew even closer under the
00:10:29
cover of an artillery barrage crockett
00:10:32
and his men proved to be a formidable
00:10:34
enemy
00:10:35
he lit his soldiers into the four
00:10:37
positions which the mexican soldiers had
00:10:40
established in nearby huts
00:10:42
through close fighting and the support
00:10:43
of grapeshop from within the alamo they
00:10:46
drove the enemy from the forward
00:10:47
positions
00:10:48
davey was involved in another
00:10:50
temporarily successful counter-attack
00:10:53
despite the best efforts of the
00:10:54
defenders they were doomed
00:10:57
with their pleas for reinforcements
00:10:58
mostly ignored it was only a matter of
00:11:01
time
00:11:02
after a 13-day fight and after santa ana
00:11:05
ordered the advance the battle of the
00:11:07
alamo lasted a mere 90 minutes
00:11:10
crockett was killed in the battle
00:11:12
some claimed that he was killed in a
00:11:14
heroic last stand while another version
00:11:16
holds that he surrendered to the mexican
00:11:18
troops and was executed either way davey
00:11:21
died that day and his corpse was burned
00:11:23
alongside the other defenders of the
00:11:25
position
00:11:26
the exact burial spot for his ashes
00:11:29
remains unknown
00:11:30
as the main celebrity casualty of the
00:11:32
siege crockett became an icon of the
00:11:35
successful struggle for texan
00:11:37
independence
00:11:38
the figure of davey in his trademark
00:11:40
coonskin cap a fashion choice often
00:11:42
adopted by frontier hunters such as
00:11:44
crockett was emulated by impressionable
00:11:46
american children for more than a
00:11:48
century
00:11:49
the legend of crockett as the ultimate
00:11:51
rugged frontier settler has a powerful
00:11:53
hold on the national psyche davy grew up
00:11:56
on the frontier and hunted so there was
00:11:58
a grain of truth to that image
00:12:00
however he was also a clever man who
00:12:03
carefully cultivated that image to reap
00:12:05
the rewards in politics and business
00:12:08
thus it is more than fitting that
00:12:10
crockett died struggling to expand the
00:12:12
vast american frontier while helping to
00:12:14
create the lone star state
00:12:16
nonetheless the dramatic manner of the
00:12:18
congressman's death powerfully
00:12:20
solidified his posthumous reputation
