Zeitleiste

  • 00:00:00 - 00:09:45

Cali Means reflects on the alarming use of government money to support soda companies despite a growing metabolic crisis among children. Growing up in a politically influential family, she initially believed in the free market's ability to create positive change. However, after working for public affairs focused on big food and pharma, she discovered how deeply entrenched these industries were in public health matters. She recalls efforts to ensure government funding for soda through claims of racial injustice, showcasing a troubling relationship between special interests and civil rights groups. from the White House my dad moved to DC

public policy in the United States I was
  • 00:00:34
    going to impact American competitiveness
  • 00:00:37
that was my obsession growing up you my

went to Stanford and Harvard Business
  • 00:00:41
School the plan was always to go back to
  • 00:00:44
    DC after
  • 00:00:45
college what I quickly learned is that
  • 00:00:48
on both sides of the aisle when the
  • 00:00:50
campaigns are over everyone goes and
  • 00:00:52
works for public affairs lobbying firms
  • 00:00:55
and inevitably you are sitting across
  • 00:00:58
from the two largest Spenders in CC
  • 00:01:00
Pharma and big food and I found myself
  • 00:01:03
    doing that very
  • 00:01:05
quickly I thought that big food and big
  • 00:01:07
    Pharma were examples of American
  • 00:01:10
innovation examples of the free market
  • 00:01:12
    and creating these leading Industries
  • 00:01:13
around the world so I was proud to go
  • 00:01:16
    and and work for pharmaceutical
  • 00:01:17
companies and and help Advance the
  • 00:01:19
interest of food companies and people
  • 00:01:21
    really convince themselves they're
  • 00:01:22
they're doing the right thing obviously
  • 00:01:24
they're also making a lot of
  • 00:01:27
money I was employed by a public affairs
  • 00:01:31
firm on K Street that was the lead
  • 00:01:33
    consultant for the American Beverage
  • 00:01:35
Association so this is one of the
  • 00:01:37
interest groups that represents Coke and
  • 00:01:39
Pepsi and fights for their interests and
  • 00:01:41
it's very businesslike there was an
  • 00:01:44
objective on the table and that
  • 00:01:46
objective was to keep Government funding
  • 00:01:48
flowing from the food stamp program to
  • 00:01:51
soda companies so this might surprise
  • 00:01:53
you but the number one item that that
  • 00:01:56
those programs dollars are spent on is
  • 00:01:58
soda uh 10 % of all food stamps funding
  • 00:02:01
it's $15 billion program goes to sugar
  • 00:02:04
water to sugary drinks and obviously not
  • 00:02:08
surprisingly in 2011 some members of
  • 00:02:10
Congress asked should this be the case
  • 00:02:13
why are we using government money why
  • 00:02:14
are we shuttling 10 billion dollar from
  • 00:02:16
the US Treasury to soda companies and we
  • 00:02:18
    have a metabolic disaster happening
  • 00:02:20
among kids so the objective from the
  • 00:02:23
    American bever Association to the
  • 00:02:25
Consultants was very simple how do we
  • 00:02:28
argue that it is wrong to take away
  • 00:02:30
Government funding for soda we went to
  • 00:02:33
the NAACP and the Hispanic Federation to
  • 00:02:36
of the leading civil rights groups in
  • 00:02:38
the country who've done great work
  • 00:02:39
    throughout American history these groups
  • 00:02:42
    today are pay-to-play organizations and
  • 00:02:44
we had a meeting that shocked me it was
  • 00:02:46
transactional it was that coke uh
  • 00:02:49
funding is going to be taken away from
  • 00:02:51
lower income children of color this is
  • 00:02:54
wrong and you need to say it's racist uh
  • 00:02:57
to take away soda from from Port po
  • 00:02:59
    children particularly children of color
  • 00:03:01
and that's exactly what happened and
  • 00:03:03
there was an allout carpet bombing of
  • 00:03:06
media both the national level the
  • 00:03:07
leaders of the NAACP and their local
  • 00:03:10
chapters uh state by state saying that
  • 00:03:12
it is an example of racism to take soda
  • 00:03:15
away from kids this sounds crazy and
  • 00:03:19
evil talking about it today but nobody
  • 00:03:22
in that room thought what they were
  • 00:03:24
doing was evil this is the pull of
  • 00:03:27
financial incentives I really thought at
  • 00:03:30
the time that we were protecting
  • 00:03:33
Coca-Cola from The Nanny State I really
  • 00:03:36
thought that there was you know bad
  • 00:03:39
    interest trying to restrict
  • 00:03:42
Choice when it comes to money there's
  • 00:03:45
    Coca-Cola Executives very chummy with
  • 00:03:48
    left-wing groups it's very transactional
  • 00:03:51
very Clubby between K Street and the
  • 00:03:54
NAACP the NAACP took millions of dollars
  • 00:03:57
from Coke then they're taking millions
  • 00:03:58
of dollars from the maker of OIC the uh
  • 00:04:01
weight loss drug now that everyone is
  • 00:04:03
obese they're taking money from them
  • 00:04:04
    today they're taking money from
  • 00:04:06
Pharma some of the largest funders in
  • 00:04:10
the country the number one is Healthcare
  • 00:04:12
and the top one is food and that's led
  • 00:04:14
to a situation where groups on the left
  • 00:04:16
are saying we shouldn't stigmatize any
  • 00:04:17
type of food and for some reason it's
  • 00:04:20
become a political virtue on the left to
  • 00:04:22
    blindly trust pharmaceutical companies
  • 00:04:24
as everyone's getting sick and not dive
  • 00:04:26
into the causes of why we're getting
  • 00:04:28
sick my my mom was the classic American
  • 00:04:31
story she was one of the 50% of
  • 00:04:33
    Americans who had pre-diabetes or
  • 00:04:35
diabetes um she struggled with blood
  • 00:04:37
sugar her most of her adult life and she
  • 00:04:42
throughout her life was told this was
  • 00:04:44
normal oh high blood sugar take
  • 00:04:46
    Metformin later high cholesterol Statin
  • 00:04:49
high blood pressure take a take a
  • 00:04:51
medication so she had all these Silo
  • 00:04:53
conditions and it was normal but none of
  • 00:04:55
those things were seen as potential
  • 00:04:57
warning signs and for my mom at 72 she
  • 00:05:00
was taking a hike with my dad perfectly
  • 00:05:02
healthy felt the pain in her stomach
  • 00:05:04
went in got a scan and uh it was stage
  • 00:05:07
    four pancreatic
  • 00:05:10
    cancer we rushed to her
  • 00:05:12
side had the most profound 12 days of my
  • 00:05:16
life but but she was dead 12 days after
  • 00:05:18
the diagnosis and as she was dying uh
  • 00:05:21
the doctors at Stanford Hospital said
  • 00:05:22
this was bad luck the pancreatic cancer
  • 00:05:24
it wasn't bad luck pancreatic cancer
  • 00:05:26
many forms of cancer are highly tied to
  • 00:05:30
    pre-diabetes and metabolic dysfunction
  • 00:05:32
and we are being lied to that cancer is
  • 00:05:34
random that dementia is random that
  • 00:05:36
kidney disease is random that all these
  • 00:05:38
issues that are killing us are random
  • 00:05:39
they're not they're all exploding and
  • 00:05:42
    they're all tied essentially to
  • 00:05:45
food so this idea that my mom was let
  • 00:05:48
down like so many of us instead of
  • 00:05:50
saying these are normal things take a
  • 00:05:52
pill you're fine I would have loved for
  • 00:05:54
them to have curiosity about why her
  • 00:05:58
body was giving warnings signs that it
  • 00:06:00
    wasn't processing energy correctly
  • 00:06:03
literally all of those biomarkers are
  • 00:06:05
signs that literally your cells are
  • 00:06:08
dysfunctional it's not normal so my
  • 00:06:12
sister and I after my mom died literally
  • 00:06:15
in the days following her death you know
  • 00:06:16
really solidified that we're going to
  • 00:06:18
devote Our Lives to to trying to change
  • 00:06:22
    this food is systematically making
  • 00:06:25
    people
  • 00:06:27
sicker 50% of americ and adults having
  • 00:06:30
    pre-diabetes or diabetes cancer heart
  • 00:06:33
    disease autoimmune conditions allergies
  • 00:06:36
any condition you could possibly think
  • 00:06:38
of is all going up as we're spending
  • 00:06:40
more money to treat it Healthcare is the
  • 00:06:41
largest and the fastest growing industry
  • 00:06:43
in the United States largest and fastest
  • 00:06:46
growing you can't even wrap your head
  • 00:06:48
around that in healthcare the more money
  • 00:06:49
we spend the sicker fatter more
  • 00:06:52
depressed and more infertile we are
  • 00:06:56
    getting you would expect the
  • 00:06:59
institutions of trust in the United
  • 00:07:01
States on Healthcare to be ringing the
  • 00:07:04
alarm about our metabolic Health crisis
  • 00:07:07
    tied to food but they're
  • 00:07:10
    [Music]
  • 00:07:11
not the Brilliance of the systemic
  • 00:07:15
design of this Devil's bargain where
  • 00:07:17
    food companies are making cheap
  • 00:07:19
addictive food that's making us sick
  • 00:07:21
which is in their interest and
  • 00:07:23
    healthcare industry is profiting from
  • 00:07:25
the fact that people are sick without
  • 00:07:27
asking why people are getting sick is
  • 00:07:29
    that there's plot posible deniability
  • 00:07:30
for every person in every institution uh
  • 00:07:33
from asking why the Pharma company who
  • 00:07:36
makes the St the doctor who helps the
  • 00:07:41
person who is already morbidly obese the
  • 00:07:44
    medical school who's training doctors
  • 00:07:46
they can all feel good in the moment
  • 00:07:50
right they all feel like they're doing
  • 00:07:51
    something in that specific moment
  • 00:07:53
they're not responsible for asking you
  • 00:07:55
know why there's a large cardiovascular
  • 00:07:59
Children's Center in every city now
  • 00:08:01
they're curing that child on a micro
  • 00:08:03
level who has a heart issue but there
  • 00:08:05
nobody not one person is responsible for
  • 00:08:07
asking why so many children are having
  • 00:08:10
    cardiovascular
  • 00:08:12
issues I do think there has to be
  • 00:08:14
    systemic change because I think
  • 00:08:15
Americans want to be healthy and I think
  • 00:08:17
they are in trouble if the largest
  • 00:08:19
    Industries in the country are
  • 00:08:20
    incentivized for them to be
  • 00:08:23
sick when we talk about how to fix this
  • 00:08:26
what's so frustrating where the lack of
  • 00:08:28
leadership really comes in is that the
  • 00:08:30
solutions here are simple we literally
  • 00:08:34
need to stop subsidizing poisonous food
  • 00:08:37
and we need medical leaders to Simply
  • 00:08:39
say clearly to not eat toxic
  • 00:08:42
food I can tell you from being in the
  • 00:08:44
rooms with the food companies and with
  • 00:08:46
the healthcare leaders these are not
  • 00:08:47
evil people but they are incentivized
  • 00:08:50
for their industry to grow We As
  • 00:08:53
    Americans very understandably listen to
  • 00:08:56
Medical experts and feel like we should
  • 00:08:58
defer to them we we need to do our own
  • 00:09:00
research we need to break free from the
  • 00:09:01
incentives of a medical and food system
  • 00:09:04
that is highly incentivized for us to be
  • 00:09:07
addicted to cheap and dangerous food and
  • 00:09:10
sicker for longer periods of time we
  • 00:09:13
need to listen to ourselves do our own
  • 00:09:15
research and not listen to The Experts
  • 00:09:17
and until we change the trillions of
  • 00:09:19
dollars of incentives that are slammed
  • 00:09:21
against the American people we're not
  • 00:09:22
going to fully get out of this
