- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

- 00:00:58you can customize your wii menu which

- 00:01:10the reason why as a kid i got interested
- 00:01:13in console hacking in the first place
- 00:01:15but there's one thing about the home
- 00:01:16real channel that has been stuck with me
- 00:01:18for 14 years now and that's the banner
- 00:01:22music
- 00:01:23this is earth radio and now here's human

- 00:01:40it slowly becomes a part of you it's a

- 00:01:48recently i was listening to this again
- 00:01:50and i was wondering who made this music
- 00:01:54on the surface this seems like a very
- 00:01:56simple question you just go on google
- 00:01:58and google tells you yo go on reddit
- 00:02:00because someone already made this
- 00:02:01question and he got an answer and you're
- 00:02:03like great let's see what deleted has to
- 00:02:06tell us about this guy it is dark wars
- 00:02:08by dreamer here's the link to the
- 00:02:09competition that was held to decide the
- 00:02:11channel music
- 00:02:12okay so there was a contest i feel like
- 00:02:15i'm missing keylor elements here but
- 00:02:18whatever let's click here and it brings
- 00:02:20us to the contest page and we have a
- 00:02:22link to the original version of the
- 00:02:24music
- 00:02:26no matter how hard you try to search for
- 00:02:28this guy it seems impossible to find any
- 00:02:31sort of information which is weird
- 00:02:33because most people who own a wii also
- 00:02:35know about the home real channel the
- 00:02:37closest thing that i found was this
- 00:02:39video on youtube by
- 00:02:40himself
- 00:02:42my name is dreamer and i feel like i
- 00:02:44have a little bit of clarifying to do
- 00:02:46here is that you who did that
- 00:02:48masterpiece of a music that i can listen
- 00:02:49on my friend's wii i am not that dreamer
- 00:02:53that is someone else a producer that
- 00:02:55randomly happens to have the same name
- 00:02:57that i do another guy with the same
- 00:03:00nickname that also makes music he's
- 00:03:02basically the false shepherd from
- 00:03:04bioshock
- 00:03:06dreamer is basically a ghost
- 00:03:09but fellas today we're gonna be hunting
- 00:03:12i'm gonna go super deep into the wii
- 00:03:13hacking history connect the dots and
- 00:03:15find this guy because i like the 15
- 00:03:18seconds of music that he made 14 years
- 00:03:21ago
- 00:03:25[Music]
- 00:03:27the nintendo wii came out in november of
- 00:03:292006 and since it says the greatest
- 00:03:32minds of an entire generation work
- 00:03:34together on a very precise goal not
- 00:03:37paying for games wait my legal team here
- 00:03:40says i can't say that
- 00:03:42they wanted to play illegal copies of
- 00:03:44their own games in case their whispers
- 00:03:46dis caught fire or something have you
- 00:03:49ever heard of panasonic they were the
- 00:03:51company responsible for manufacturing
- 00:03:53the we drives and before that the game
- 00:03:55killed ones hardware wise every single
- 00:03:58wii distributing manufacturer was the
- 00:04:00same but some of them had a special
- 00:04:02purpose diva consoles which were
- 00:04:04destined to journalists and programmers
- 00:04:06to test games before lists and for this
- 00:04:08reason create these fancy writable rvtr
- 00:04:12disks which are just nintendo
- 00:04:14made kind of dvds that legally don't
- 00:04:17count as dvds to avoid paying any
- 00:04:19royalties so if the hardware is
- 00:04:21identical between the retail and evac
- 00:04:23drives how does panasonic make them read
- 00:04:26different stuff well after the physical
- 00:04:29drive like the piece of metal is made
- 00:04:32they activate a software factory mode
- 00:04:34and using that they can flash either a
- 00:04:36retail firmware or a debug one
- 00:04:38cool but what if hackers found a way to
- 00:04:41enable that factory mode at home
- 00:04:44they could then just flash their own
- 00:04:46custom firmware and make the drive play
- 00:04:48backup copies of games oh no guess what
- 00:04:51happened next and it wasn't even
- 00:04:53something unprecedented because the
- 00:04:55gamecube drives were hacked two years
- 00:04:57prior in 2004 using the same exact
- 00:05:00factory mode
- 00:05:01but it wasn't all smooth sailing because
- 00:05:04to actually access the factory mode you
- 00:05:06need a password and while the game q1
- 00:05:08was widely known
- 00:05:10panasonic didn't want hackers to mess
- 00:05:12with their new shiny we drive so they
- 00:05:14changed the factory mode password
- 00:05:17to lower case
- 00:05:21[Applause]
- 00:05:22three months after the weirdest people
- 00:05:24could already run back up copies of
- 00:05:27games on their wheels by using mod chips
- 00:05:29such as the windja
- 00:05:33okay so i absolutely need to show you
- 00:05:35something this is a review of the winja
- 00:05:37from january of 2007 okay and if you
- 00:05:39want to know how simple it was to hack
- 00:05:42with rice this is a picture of the chip
- 00:05:44and it's literally a ready-made peak
- 00:05:47microcontroller
- 00:05:49that's been programmed
- 00:05:50and they glued this label on it um and
- 00:05:54these chips were the same ones used to
- 00:05:57hack playstation drives 10 years prior
- 00:06:00okay so it's now january of 2007 and you
- 00:06:03can run copies of existing games using
- 00:06:06this technique using mod chips but
- 00:06:09that's pretty much all you can do if you
- 00:06:11want to run your own software you can't
- 00:06:14because you need to sign it and you need
- 00:06:16to trick your way into thinking that
- 00:06:18nintendo definitely improved what you're
- 00:06:20running so while mod shifts are the
- 00:06:22first step we need to go deeper
- 00:06:32[Music]
- 00:06:35this is the chaos communication congress
- 00:06:37a hacking conference that takes place
- 00:06:39every year in germany since 1984. so
- 00:06:42just like the orwell book but instead of
- 00:06:44having people living in a dystopia you
- 00:06:46have them hacking stuff and using
- 00:06:48commodore 64s anyway 23 years later is
- 00:06:522007 and well if you give some virgin
- 00:06:55teenage boys a wii they're gonna play
- 00:06:58smash on it they're gonna have a
- 00:06:59tournament but if you give the same wii
- 00:07:02to some hackers some interesting stuff
- 00:07:05is going to happen
- 00:07:08this is bushing he was a legendary
- 00:07:11hacker and you might have already heard
- 00:07:13of him here on the channel since he's
- 00:07:14the protagonist of the we stirred up
- 00:07:16this video
- 00:07:17at the time he was 27 and he decided to
- 00:07:20give a talk about we security at the ccc
- 00:07:23also known as the 24th c3 did you see
- 00:07:26okay sorry this talk called the state of
- 00:07:28the wii is the big bang for we hacking
- 00:07:31it's the point when everything starts so
- 00:07:34here's a very quick totally serious
- 00:07:36abridged version of it when humanity was
- 00:07:38created on september 14 2001
- 00:07:42there was the gamecube but then after
- 00:07:45five years
- 00:07:46the wii came out they are the same
- 00:07:48console
- 00:07:49good night
- 00:07:52no okay seriously the wii and the
- 00:07:54gamecube share the same hardware they
- 00:07:55don't just have the same dvd drive they
- 00:07:57have the same cpu and gpu just clock
- 00:08:00faster and the wii has some more memory
- 00:08:03thank you nintendo this is definitely
- 00:08:05the revolution you were talking about
- 00:08:07before changing the name because it was
- 00:08:10embarrassing there were some new
- 00:08:12features like wi-fi bluetooth and sd
- 00:08:15card slot which
- 00:08:16are connected to the old parts using
- 00:08:18what nintendo calls an io bridge you see
- 00:08:22old parts new parts and the bridge
- 00:08:27that was easy bushing was very
- 00:08:29interested in this since the gamecube
- 00:08:30had already been hacked for years and
- 00:08:32this similarity could be a good starting
- 00:08:34point to hack the wii
- 00:08:36except nintendo lied to their
- 00:08:39own developers because the bridge is not
- 00:08:42a bridge
- 00:08:43this is what experts refer to as a naked
- 00:08:46wii and we can see every single part
- 00:08:49here cpu gpu ram wi-fi also shout out to
- 00:08:53the gamecube ports occupying the top
- 00:08:55half
- 00:08:56of the motherboard anyway let's focus on
- 00:08:59the gpu
- 00:09:00hollywood is the graphics processor if
- 00:09:02you see mario on screen jumping that's
- 00:09:05because hollywood is drawing it but
- 00:09:07there's something weird going on with
- 00:09:10hollywood because if we take a look
- 00:09:11inside this ship
- 00:09:13we find
- 00:09:14another ship basically a parasite and
- 00:09:17this cpu living inside your gpu is what
- 00:09:21nintendo calls the bridge but why the
- 00:09:24secrecy why is it hidden inside the gpu
- 00:09:27what what is it doing here
- 00:09:29well apart from working as a bridge so
- 00:09:31effectively connecting the gamecube
- 00:09:33parts to the wii ones
- 00:09:34it's a dedicated
- 00:09:36security processor that controls
- 00:09:38everything that happens inside your way
- 00:09:40it's the first thing that turns on when
- 00:09:42you boot up your wii it's very important
- 00:09:44for them and they didn't want people to
- 00:09:46discover it but we are talking about it
- 00:09:48so it happened this security processor
- 00:09:51which is more powerful than a nintendo
- 00:09:53ds cpu lives inside hollywood so hackers
- 00:09:56decided to nickname it the starlet and
- 00:10:00we are getting into some deep technical
- 00:10:02here we are losing the focus so i have a
- 00:10:05plan to explain this to anyone even
- 00:10:07people who don't get how this works
- 00:10:10let's imagine stallet this cold
- 00:10:12calculating security chip
- 00:10:14as an anime girl i actually have a point
- 00:10:17trust me starlet is an anime girl and we
- 00:10:21is her classroom okay starlet controls
- 00:10:24every piece of it locking the console
- 00:10:26down with sha1 and aes security kills
- 00:10:30which would take some time to crack the
- 00:10:33only time starlet turns off
- 00:10:36metaphorically leaving the classroom
- 00:10:37unattended is when she has to let
- 00:10:40gamecube games in because gamecube games
- 00:10:42don't understand this new fancy security
- 00:10:45so it needs to be off she needs to go
- 00:10:48outside and touch grass but she's not
- 00:10:51stupid so before leaving the classroom
- 00:10:53before leaving it unattended she
- 00:10:55disables every single we
- 00:10:58feature
- 00:11:00hi super smash bros melee i have no
- 00:11:03issues with you staying here and playing
- 00:11:06but only one small thing before you do
- 00:11:08that you can only touch the gamecube
- 00:11:10hardware not the wii one and you're also
- 00:11:12only getting one fourth of the memory
- 00:11:14okay that's that's all you need to play
- 00:11:17with those versions
- 00:11:21the idea behind this was that if hacker
- 00:11:23somehow found a way to play gamecube
- 00:11:25homebrew on a wii like panasonic being
- 00:11:28lazy they would only have access
- 00:11:31to the gamecube hardware and one fourth
- 00:11:33of the ram essentially being confined in
- 00:11:36a very secure sandbox
- 00:11:39nintendo's plan was brilliant and
- 00:11:40honestly worth having a dedicated
- 00:11:42security processor so it really sucked
- 00:11:45when they completely this up do
- 00:11:47you wonder what happens to the remaining
- 00:11:49three-fourths of memory when a gamecube
- 00:11:51game is on starlet forgets to clean them
- 00:11:54which means that they still have weak
- 00:11:57data on them unencrypted because storage
- 00:11:59is not there
- 00:12:01and by wii data i mean 75
- 00:12:05of the super secret keys
- 00:12:07that's a dumb mistake nintendo now 75 is
- 00:12:11a lot but it isn't a hundred and the
- 00:12:14team still had to somehow obtain the
- 00:12:16missing 25 percent or all of this would
- 00:12:18be useless
- 00:12:20so
- 00:12:21how do you do that
- 00:12:22well you have to employ the most secret
- 00:12:26anime weapon of all which is called a
- 00:12:28pair of eyebrow tweezers yeah they
- 00:12:31connected some solder points on the
- 00:12:33motherboard and by doing that the memory
- 00:12:35bank switched and they got the remaining
- 00:12:38kiss i wonder what the name of the team
- 00:12:40is oh
- 00:12:42so team tweezers now had the keys to the
- 00:12:44wii classroom but they still had to
- 00:12:46prove everyone that they could run code
- 00:12:48in wii mode so they took the image of an
- 00:12:51existing game lego star wars modified
- 00:12:53its content to include a small demo fake
- 00:12:56signed it
- 00:12:57burned it and ran it
- 00:12:59it's not really lego star wars but uh
- 00:13:02right now we're still basically patching
- 00:13:03other codes we found all i can show is
- 00:13:05that we do have code running it is
- 00:13:08running in wii mode not gamecube because
- 00:13:10if you actually have
- 00:13:11access to uh
- 00:13:14all the hardware this is what happens if
- 00:13:15you don't have encrypted memory
- 00:13:22on december 28 2007 wii hacking was
- 00:13:26finally real this was awesome but you
- 00:13:29still needed a mod chip to buy pasty
- 00:13:31hardware protection and run a fake sign
- 00:13:33disk
- 00:13:34what if you wanted to run homebrew on a
- 00:13:37wii that wasn't modified
- 00:13:39well
- 00:13:40[Music]
- 00:13:42this is the legend of zelda twilight
- 00:13:44princess it was a launch title for the
- 00:13:46wii which is convenient so when you
- 00:13:49first create a save the game lets you
- 00:13:51choose your heroes name and your horse's
- 00:13:53name for a maximum of
- 00:13:56let me check uh okay eight characters so
- 00:13:59if you try and go over eight characters
- 00:14:02the game wouldn't simply allow you to
- 00:14:04input more letters but it only checks
- 00:14:07for this when you're first creating the
- 00:14:08save not when the save file is actually
- 00:14:10already created
- 00:14:12and you can probably see where i'm going
- 00:14:14with this so among the other kids team
- 00:14:16tweezers dumped from the previous attack
- 00:14:19they also got the ones needed to sign
- 00:14:21save data and this means they could now
- 00:14:23around with sales however they
- 00:14:25wanted
- 00:14:26so they took a twilight princess save
- 00:14:27file and they replaced the horse's name
- 00:14:29with a very very very long one so long
- 00:14:33that it wasn't even a name anymore it
- 00:14:35was a small program that by using a
- 00:14:37buffer overflow exploit was able to run
- 00:14:40any home rule from your sd card as long
- 00:14:42as it was called boot.elf and placed on
- 00:14:45the route this modified save file was
- 00:14:47released in february as the twilight
- 00:14:49hack and everyone was now able to run
- 00:14:51homeview on their wii without having a
- 00:14:53mudship it was just a matter of owning
- 00:14:55zelda and owning an sd card
- 00:14:58this was awesome and groundbreaking but
- 00:15:00it still wasn't quite convenient because
- 00:15:03every time you wanted to run another
- 00:15:05home view you had to connect the sd card
- 00:15:07to the computer and change the file and
- 00:15:09then run zelda wait wait i have an idea
- 00:15:12write this down you know what would be
- 00:15:14cool like a hub some sort of channel
- 00:15:17where you could run different home views
- 00:15:18from
- 00:15:19oh so do you remember when a few months
- 00:15:22prior bushing showcased the very first
- 00:15:24demo of we homebeer running by using a
- 00:15:26modified version of lego star wars that
- 00:15:29could be done because the hardware check
- 00:15:30on the physical disk was disabled by
- 00:15:32using a mod chip and while the wii on
- 00:15:34the software side tries to check if that
- 00:15:37software you're running is legit by
- 00:15:39verifying its signature which is like a
- 00:15:41password it basically tells the wii if
- 00:15:44what you're running is approved by
- 00:15:45nintendo or not nintendo this up
- 00:15:48so bad you could just use zero as a
- 00:15:50signature and it would work so you know
- 00:15:53what nintendo was also using this system
- 00:15:55for
- 00:15:56channels you know those applications
- 00:15:59that stay on your wii menu and don't
- 00:16:01require any sort of hardware check to
- 00:16:03run
- 00:16:04yeah those ones i wonder what's going to
- 00:16:07happen last
- 00:16:08[Music]
- 00:16:11okay so during the tried hack
- 00:16:13development a new guy joined the
- 00:16:15tweezers team marcan he was only 17 but
- 00:16:18he definitely knew what he was doing he
- 00:16:20was the entire reason why the pride hack
- 00:16:22was able to put humvee from the front sd
- 00:16:25card slot this guy just like bushing is
- 00:16:28a legend so he and all the other guys on
- 00:16:31the team started working on a channel an
- 00:16:34actual channel that you would run from
- 00:16:36your wii menu and that would boot humbly
- 00:16:39you from there if you have a mod chip
- 00:16:41you just burn an installer disk and
- 00:16:42install the channel using that if you
- 00:16:44don't have a mod chip you can just use
- 00:16:46zelda and the twilight hack to install
- 00:16:48this new channel technology wise
- 00:16:50everything was ready but there was still
- 00:16:52one key thing one very important detail
- 00:16:56that was missing something not
- 00:16:58sacrificable for a channel that has to
- 00:16:59stay on your wii menu and that you get
- 00:17:01to experience every time you boot up
- 00:17:03your console so you can't escape this
- 00:17:05thing if it looks bad you're gonna be
- 00:17:07like why did i install this in the first
- 00:17:09place so yeah uh you want we channels to
- 00:17:12look and sound good so team tweezers
- 00:17:14hosted two contests on webrew.org one
- 00:17:18for the banner graphics and one for the
- 00:17:20banner music
- 00:17:22the first contest the banner graphics
- 00:17:24one is held on march 26 and some very
- 00:17:27detailed specifications about the wii
- 00:17:29banner format are given by the team
- 00:17:31explaining how the banu should be made
- 00:17:33and the winner will work with marcan and
- 00:17:35create a final animated version of the
- 00:17:37graphics
- 00:17:3828 and raiser sent each one with its own
- 00:17:41distinct style but the winning one is
- 00:17:43this water film one by sully i tried
- 00:17:46looking at this guy and it's very easy
- 00:17:48to find him and not only that but he's
- 00:17:51now working full time as a graphics
- 00:17:53designer and this is in his portfolio so
- 00:17:56that's very very cool
- 00:17:58but now we need to talk about the second
- 00:18:00contest the banner music
- 00:18:02the contest for the banner music was
- 00:18:04held one week after the graphics won
- 00:18:06with three simple requests
- 00:18:09the music has to fit in with the other
- 00:18:11wii channels but it also has to
- 00:18:13automatically fit in with the banner
- 00:18:15graphics made by soli and finally it
- 00:18:18needs to have a completely copyright
- 00:18:20free license so that it can be used
- 00:18:21anywhere needed without having to pay
- 00:18:23for royalties each time 20 pieces of
- 00:18:26music are sent and some of them are
- 00:18:28still online
- 00:18:31[Music]
- 00:18:33this could have been the home real
- 00:18:35channel music in a different timeline or
- 00:18:37something and you know it's 2008 because
- 00:18:39someone left a rude comment under it
- 00:18:43but the actual final winner was this
- 00:18:46unnamed piece of music by dreamer that
- 00:18:48we know
- 00:18:50and love
- 00:18:54[Applause]
- 00:18:55[Music]
- 00:19:02okay so
- 00:19:03let's take a second
- 00:19:05take a breath
- 00:19:06we just explained basically the entire
- 00:19:09history of the home real channel and
- 00:19:11mostly hacking in 15 minutes
- 00:19:14and i swear to god i didn't just do that
- 00:19:17because i wanted to dunk on panasonic i
- 00:19:19actually have a point with this okay so
- 00:19:22dreamer is a very elusive person with a
- 00:19:24super generic nickname
- 00:19:26but we can use all the information we
- 00:19:29just gathered from learning about the
- 00:19:31home real channel history to identify
- 00:19:33him
- 00:19:38if you remember at the beginning of this
- 00:19:40video we talked about another guy named
- 00:19:42dreamer which made a youtube video
- 00:19:44saying he was
- 00:19:46not the homebrew channel dreamer but
- 00:19:48just another guy that also made music
- 00:19:51that had the same nickname
- 00:19:53okay this is not the dreamer we are
- 00:19:55looking for but this completely
- 00:19:57unrelated guy which in the comments
- 00:19:59people call young john
- 00:20:01is actually the key to finding the real
- 00:20:04dreamer
- 00:20:05so
- 00:20:07let me explain this very calmly if we
- 00:20:10check the comments of this video
- 00:20:12between all of them we find two very
- 00:20:15interesting comments which are made by
- 00:20:17another person named dreamer
- 00:20:19talking about the pronunciation of the
- 00:20:22nickname and in the second comment he
- 00:20:24makes is actually saying that he's a
- 00:20:26part of fail overflow fail overflow is
- 00:20:29the current name for team tweezers they
- 00:20:31changed it because they didn't want to
- 00:20:33be only associated with we hacking they
- 00:20:35also worked on some ps4 stuff if i
- 00:20:37remember correctly
- 00:20:39but what this guy is saying essentially
- 00:20:41is hey i'm the dreamer you're looking
- 00:20:43for i'm the guy that was in that hacker
- 00:20:45team he's saying this very subtly but
- 00:20:48he's saying it and i was like okay
- 00:20:51if this is the real dreamer we just need
- 00:20:53to go to his youtube profile page and
- 00:20:55from there we go to the about page and
- 00:20:58bang we instantly get access to his
- 00:21:00social media contacts we can ask him how
- 00:21:03he's doing his social security number
- 00:21:06everything okay so uh like i tried doing
- 00:21:09that but he has nothing on his profile
- 00:21:12it's completely anonymous so i was
- 00:21:15basically out of luck
- 00:21:17unless
- 00:21:19i actually used the power of correlation
- 00:21:23if we go back to his second comment here
- 00:21:25he said one key thing that actually
- 00:21:27could open the door to finding this guy
- 00:21:31someone linked this video to him on
- 00:21:33twitter so if he's not lying and if he's
- 00:21:36actually the real dreamer we should be
- 00:21:39able to find him on twitter
- 00:21:42problem is twitter has like a thousand
- 00:21:44dreamers and i'm not going to check them
- 00:21:46all because it's
- 00:21:47one very time consuming two very
- 00:21:50creepy so i have another way which is
- 00:21:53smarter and faster
- 00:21:56and stronger sorry i had to say it was
- 00:21:58stronger than me
- 00:22:02okay so let's suppose this guy's legit
- 00:22:04and he's actually the real dreamer
- 00:22:06twitter is a social network so he will
- 00:22:08probably be using it to interact with
- 00:22:10people he knows what we need to do is
- 00:22:13find one of these people with a public
- 00:22:15profile check who they are following and
- 00:22:18bang we instantly get access to the real
- 00:22:21dreamer profile
- 00:22:23however to do this we need a list of
- 00:22:25people who are or were involved with him
- 00:22:29at some point of his life and we do we
- 00:22:31just spent half of the video talking
- 00:22:33about his people bushing and marcon
- 00:22:36which were the main figures behind the
- 00:22:38home real channel creation
- 00:22:40now as many of you know bushing
- 00:22:42unfortunately passed away in 2016 so i'm
- 00:22:45not going to check his profile we are
- 00:22:47going to see what markham is doing
- 00:22:49instead
- 00:22:50merkin is very active on twitter mostly
- 00:22:52working on apple serial related projects
- 00:22:55such as azah linux for example and his
- 00:22:57profile is public we can see every
- 00:23:00single person that he's following
- 00:23:02all
- 00:23:03501 of them this is going to take a
- 00:23:06while but using control and f and
- 00:23:09scrolling further we should be able to
- 00:23:11scan through all of them and see if he's
- 00:23:13following dreamer the real dreamer
- 00:23:17one tweeter later
- 00:23:20on
- 00:23:20dreamer
- 00:23:28this
- 00:23:29is dreamer he's followed by marcan the
- 00:23:31profile pictures matching and he's
- 00:23:33outright stating to be a member of
- 00:23:35failed overflow we got him where do we
- 00:23:38go from here
- 00:23:40well the first thing i did was feeding
- 00:23:42google the link to his twitter profile
- 00:23:44so that hopefully by the time you're
- 00:23:46watching this video just googling
- 00:23:48dreamer wii twitter should give you some
- 00:23:50results without having to social
- 00:23:52engineer like i did and second
- 00:23:55i find it criminal that this guy made a
- 00:23:57beloved piece of music that people have
- 00:23:59listened to millions of times and nobody
- 00:24:02knows anything about him
- 00:24:04so
- 00:24:06why don't we interview this guy i mean
- 00:24:08the internet knows nothing about him so
- 00:24:11i prepared a message with my
- 00:24:13non-existing credentials and i just
- 00:24:16asked him if he wanted to give me an
- 00:24:18interview
- 00:24:20and he accepted not only that but he
- 00:24:22actually said he likes my videos so i'm
- 00:24:24officially homebrew channel music guy
- 00:24:27approved i guess so today we're going to
- 00:24:29be interviewing this guy for the first
- 00:24:30time ever on the internet but there's
- 00:24:33one small problem he only agreed to a
- 00:24:36written anonymous interview and this is
- 00:24:38a video so i can just like
- 00:24:41show you the text that wouldn't work so
- 00:24:43i invited a fellow youtuber i'm not a
- 00:24:45casualty and he's going to be voicing
- 00:24:47dreamer for the interview so you can
- 00:24:49still keep watching like normal or in
- 00:24:52case you're a zoomer i know you're going
- 00:24:54to put this in the background while
- 00:24:55playing minecraft and doing like three
- 00:24:57things
- 00:24:59the first real question i would like to
- 00:25:01ask you is how do we read your nickname
- 00:25:03is it dreamer or doctor mister it's
- 00:25:06dreamer the nickname i went by for years
- 00:25:08before entering the wii scene i believe
- 00:25:10i left out the vowels when that nickname
- 00:25:11was not available to register at some we
- 00:25:13related website and it stuck for my
- 00:25:15involvement in the scene recently and
- 00:25:16amazingly some people are taking great
- 00:25:18pains and pronouncing it as is all
- 00:25:20consonants and i really appreciate their
- 00:25:22effort where are you from and how old
- 00:25:24are you i'm currently living in germany
- 00:25:26and i'm in my 40s now although i don't
- 00:25:28look like it lack of sunlight exposure
- 00:25:30has its benefits i suppose what do you
- 00:25:32do in your life for a living i've been
- 00:25:33professionally programming and designing
- 00:25:35websites for more than 25 years
- 00:25:37what are your hobbies i like playing
- 00:25:39with all sorts of small electronics
- 00:25:41embedded systems microcontrollers old
- 00:25:43console systems of the 80s i still make
- 00:25:44music from time to time at the moment i
- 00:25:46really enjoy the techniques and
- 00:25:47aesthetics of chiptune music and i'm
- 00:25:49trying to improve my japanese although i
- 00:25:51feel i've actually gotten worse in the
- 00:25:52last few years okay so let's just dive
- 00:25:54straight into the wii related questions
- 00:25:57since that's what you're here for how
- 00:25:59did you get in contact with the tweezers
- 00:26:01team can you give us more information
- 00:26:03about that after demoing what would
- 00:26:05eventually become the homebrew channel
- 00:26:06with a silent banner team tweezers made
- 00:26:08a public call for banner music
- 00:26:09submissions on webrew.org one would
- 00:26:11upload the audio file to a server and
- 00:26:13make the entry on the wiki after my
- 00:26:15submission was chosen in an internal
- 00:26:16vote i became a member of the team i've
- 00:26:18also been working on graphics for the
- 00:26:19channel and other related projects boot
- 00:26:21me for example and much more than music
- 00:26:23i became the graphics guy of the group
- 00:26:25in the process we all became very good
- 00:26:27friends and to this day we hang out both
- 00:26:28virtually and in real life
- 00:26:31what software do you use or did you use
- 00:26:34to produce music i've been using
- 00:26:36trackers to make music since the very
- 00:26:37early 90s and i still do on 8-bit
- 00:26:40machines like the game boy or the
- 00:26:41commodore 64. i very much enjoy creating
- 00:26:43music within their limitations and
- 00:26:45figuring out how to bend those
- 00:26:46boundaries in the late 90s i became
- 00:26:48aware of a project called jessicola buzz
- 00:26:50a hybrid of trackers and virtual
- 00:26:52synthesizers for some time i used it
- 00:26:53extensively to create music and during
- 00:26:55that time i used it to create the
- 00:26:56homebrew channel music all in all i have
- 00:26:58not been entirely unsuccessful making
- 00:27:00music i have a release on vinyl and
- 00:27:02actual radio airplay to show for myself
- 00:27:04but for the time being that 15 second
- 00:27:06loop from 15 years ago is the best known
- 00:27:08music i've ever made how long did it
- 00:27:10take for you to work on the banner
- 00:27:12jingle the sketch i submitted probably
- 00:27:14just took an evening or two but the
- 00:27:15final version was a process that took
- 00:27:16several iterations over a few weeks not
- 00:27:18only for musical tweets the bass line
- 00:27:20for example changed quite significantly
- 00:27:22but also for very specific mastering we
- 00:27:24wanted to have good music but we also
- 00:27:26wanted to match the wii's other
- 00:27:27channel's aesthetics as closely as
- 00:27:28possible including volume and
- 00:27:30equalization and i believe we achieved
- 00:27:32that to this day some people think it's
- 00:27:33made by nintendo themselves are there
- 00:27:35any extended or alternate versions of
- 00:27:38the theme because when i was researching
- 00:27:41for this video
- 00:27:42i stumbled upon the homebrew channel
- 00:27:44installer disk and that one has a
- 00:27:46slightly different version of the music
- 00:27:52[Music]
- 00:27:57the music you know is all that exists it
- 00:27:59was very much tailor made to fit the
- 00:28:01purpose of the banner with an intro
- 00:28:03[Music]
- 00:28:07and a looped section
- 00:28:11[Music]
- 00:28:16you have to keep in mind that we were in
- 00:28:17very much uncharted territory at the
- 00:28:19time we just began to understand how
- 00:28:21channel banners work and where the
- 00:28:22limits are for example the install this
- 00:28:24version you mentioned is a much shorter
- 00:28:25version because disk banners are much
- 00:28:27more limited in size than channel
- 00:28:28banners in the end i'm very happy that
- 00:28:30the banner music worked out as well as
- 00:28:31it did for a short time we thought about
- 00:28:33having background music in the channel
- 00:28:34itself but that never went anywhere
- 00:28:36technically it would have been not too
- 00:28:37difficult i seem to remember that we
- 00:28:38eventually simply decided against a
- 00:28:39permanent noise background that being
- 00:28:41said i have a good idea on how to make a
- 00:28:42full track from the banner loop and
- 00:28:44maybe someday i will get around to
- 00:28:46actually making it sometimes i joke
- 00:28:47about making a concept album based on
- 00:28:49the homebrew channel music do you still
- 00:28:50have the project file for the theme or
- 00:28:53is it lost to time because it would be
- 00:28:55cool to actually have on high quality
- 00:28:57version published to
- 00:28:58bandcamp or soundcloud or whatever i get
- 00:29:01asked that a lot and yes i still have
- 00:29:03the project files the problem is the
- 00:29:04software just scola buzz fell in and out
- 00:29:06of development over the last 20 years
- 00:29:08and changed a lot under the hood with
- 00:29:10some of the generator and effects
- 00:29:11plugins not working anymore on more
- 00:29:12recent versions while i can get the
- 00:29:14basics of the track working it's almost
- 00:29:15impossible to completely recreate the
- 00:29:17environment i used 15 years ago so for
- 00:29:19now there's no higher quality version
- 00:29:20than the one in our public repository
- 00:29:22would you ever consider receiving
- 00:29:24external help to make the project work
- 00:29:26again the sentiment is appreciated but
- 00:29:28i'm not very fond of the idea of giving
- 00:29:30out my music to strangers but i'm also
- 00:29:32sure it's not necessary if i manage to
- 00:29:33sit my procrastinating ass down and put
- 00:29:35in some effort i can certainly get the
- 00:29:37essential parts working in a more modern
- 00:29:38setup people on reddit have spread the
- 00:29:41rumor that the official
- 00:29:42song title is dark waters but according
- 00:29:45to my research that's actually the name
- 00:29:47of the graphics theme that you made
- 00:29:50can you confirm or deny this that is
- 00:29:52correct the song never had a proper
- 00:29:54title just homebrew channel music dark
- 00:29:56waters was the name of the second darker
- 00:29:58graphics theme that came with the hombre
- 00:30:00channel when we made it themeable
- 00:30:01alright so you're german as you just
- 00:30:03told me and this is kind of an obvious
- 00:30:05question but
- 00:30:06have you ever attended the ccc and
- 00:30:10are you still in contact with the other
- 00:30:11members of the team do you still talk
- 00:30:13with them of course i've visited the
- 00:30:15congress for a good 15 years it had been
- 00:30:16the yearly occasion for all of us to
- 00:30:18meet up in person we've made a few
- 00:30:19appearances as a group recently many of
- 00:30:21our members appear in public
- 00:30:22individually with their own projects now
- 00:30:24but we still are a very tight-knit group
- 00:30:26we keep close in contact with each other
- 00:30:27and also meet in person if circumstances
- 00:30:29allow it which considering we're all
- 00:30:30spread around the globe happens more
- 00:30:32often than you'd think are you currently
- 00:30:34working on any projects because i would
- 00:30:36really like to plug them here if that's
- 00:30:38the case nothing worth mentioning at the
- 00:30:39moment you can follow me at underscore
- 00:30:41dreamer underscore on twitter and if
- 00:30:43there's something new i would announce
- 00:30:44it there but for now my twitter feed is
- 00:30:46remarkably empty alright this has been
- 00:30:48awesome thank you for accepting the
- 00:30:51interview you finally shed light on who
- 00:30:54you are and how this was made and yeah
- 00:30:57just thank you for participating in this
- 00:31:00video and
- 00:31:01accepting this interview anytime you're
- 00:31:04very welcome
- 00:31:05so
- 00:31:06we did it no wait i need to say this in
- 00:31:07the same tone piracy nicole did in that
- 00:31:09video
- 00:31:10so guys we did it so guys we did it we
- 00:31:14actually got every single element in our
- 00:31:16bucket list and most importantly i got
- 00:31:19to tell you how nintendo failed and how
- 00:31:21team tweezers won
- 00:31:23and that's satisfying there's some
- 00:31:25people i need to thank for making this
- 00:31:27video possible in the first place of
- 00:31:28course dreamer for actually accepting
- 00:31:30the interview and not blocking me i'm
- 00:31:32not a casualty for voicing dreamer
- 00:31:34rodrigo copetti of copacity.org because
- 00:31:37that website is just mwah it has all
- 00:31:40sorts of informations and pictures about
- 00:31:42the wii hardware and it saved me from
- 00:31:44having to disassemble a we myself
- 00:31:46actually bought a wii for this video and
- 00:31:48yeah i haven't opened it it's still
- 00:31:50whole like milk and finally aurora right
- 00:31:53because she somehow got me in contact
- 00:31:55with marcan i didn't get to interview
- 00:31:57him like dreamer but i managed to ask
- 00:31:59him a few questions about we hacking and
- 00:32:01i hope i got everything right but in
- 00:32:03case i didn't let me know in the
- 00:32:04comments or just tell me whatever you
- 00:32:06want in the comments about the video
- 00:32:07about your life about the meaning of
- 00:32:09life so yeah leave a comment if you want
- 00:32:11and i'm definitely not saying this just
- 00:32:13because comments boost the video in the
- 00:32:15algorithm
- 00:32:16speaking of which this video has been
