TLDRVideyo a bay yon gid sou kijan pou konstwi yon lavi ou renmen an slektif ak kout estrateji nan panse konsepsyon. L apwoche sa atravè twa etap prensipal: premye, idantifye zòn nan ou bezwen amelyore; dezyèm, eksperimante ak opòtinite nouvo; ak twazyèm, sèvi ak sa ou aprann pou amelyore kontinyèlman. Li enplike refleksyon sou sante, travay, ak relasyon, ak bezwen pataje ak kolabore avè lòt moun. Estrateji ak alè yo se zouti pou ede atenn objektif sa yo.

Mitbringsel

  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

Nou ka divize lavi a an twa pati prensipal: Sante, Travay / Lajan, ak Relasyon.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:15:00

Nan twazyèm etap la, iterasyon vin enpòtan. Sa vle di ke nou refè ak modifye aksyon nou yo sou baz eksperyans nou deja genyen. Sèvi ak enfòmasyon ki soti nan eksperimantasyon yo ede nou deside ki kote yo ka amelyore yo plis. Sa a se yon sik kontinyèl kote nou idantifye, fè eksperimantasyon, ak iterasyon, kote nou konsakre tèt nou pou konstwi lavi nou ak tout sa ki genyen ladan li.

  • 00:15:00 - 00:24:02

what are the principal strategies and
  • 00:00:01
tools that we can learn from the world
  • 00:00:03
of evidence about how to genuinely
  • 00:00:04
answer the question of how do I build a
  • 00:00:06
life that I love how do I know what to
  • 00:00:07
do with my life and let's take like a
  • 00:00:08
product designer kind of design thinking
  • 00:00:11
approach to this and actually figure it
  • 00:00:12
out so I have got three steps for you
  • 00:00:14
step one step two and step three step
  • 00:00:17
one we're gonna call identify or we can
  • 00:00:21
also call that kind of get clarity
  • 00:00:23
um and then we will talk about step two
  • 00:00:24
    in just a moment
  • 00:00:27
step one is to basically identify how do
  • 00:00:30
we identify basically what we need to do
  • 00:00:32
there is figure out like what is
  • 00:00:34
actually the problem on a scale of zero
  • 00:00:35
to ten to what extent are you living a
  • 00:00:37
life that you love if you're anything
  • 00:00:38
    other than a 10 but also if you're a 10
  • 00:00:40
out of 10 it's worth figuring out like
  • 00:00:42
what actually is the problem like in
  • 00:00:44
what areas of life do you actually want
  • 00:00:47
to be doing something like like what is
  • 00:00:49
this gap between where you want to be
  • 00:00:51
and where you currently are and what
  • 00:00:52
does that look like in the in different
  • 00:00:54
areas of life so let's think about this
  • 00:00:56
how do we split up life into into a
  • 00:00:57
thing that makes sense for me there's
  • 00:00:59
like sort of four or three I I sort of
  • 00:01:01
think of it in three three parts
  • 00:01:03
sometimes four some sort of like I'm
  • 00:01:04
just gonna give you my like the the
  • 00:01:05
framework I use and you can kind of pick
  • 00:01:07
and choose whatever works for you here
  • 00:01:08
but essentially like what are the what
  • 00:01:10
are the aspects of life that we care
  • 00:01:12
about so the first one is Health the
  • 00:01:14
second one is like work slash money
  • 00:01:16
slash career you know all that kind of
  • 00:01:19
stuff you know let's call it work slash
  • 00:01:20
wealth that whole bucket of things
  • 00:01:22
    bucket of things
  • 00:01:24
third one is relationship chips slash
  • 00:01:27
love slash friends slash family like all
  • 00:01:30
that kind of stuff that's like one big
  • 00:01:32
bucket you know what let's let's just
  • 00:01:33
focus on these three like there are
  • 00:01:35
other things that you can do like there
  • 00:01:37
are some people that would put play in
  • 00:01:39
    here or like
  • 00:01:42
um purpose slash Mission or like
  • 00:01:45
    spirituality or like learning like
  • 00:01:48
there's all there's dozens and dozens of
  • 00:01:51
ways of splitting up what like a good
  • 00:01:53
    life is
  • 00:01:54
um but just for the sake of Simplicity
  • 00:01:56
we're just going to split it up into
  • 00:01:57
Health work and relationships nice and
  • 00:01:59
easy very few people would disagree with
  • 00:02:01
the idea that Health work and
  • 00:02:03
relationships are like the three main
  • 00:02:05
three of the main key areas of life and
  • 00:02:08
if you can live a life that you love in
  • 00:02:09
terms of health physical health mental
  • 00:02:10
health and stuff work and relationships
  • 00:02:12
then you're winning essentially all we
  • 00:02:14
want to do when it comes to building a
  • 00:02:16
life that we love is we just want to
  • 00:02:18
start taking steps in the right
  • 00:02:20
direction across each of these three
  • 00:02:21
Realms Health work and relationships so
  • 00:02:24
a question you want to ask yourself is
  • 00:02:25
when it comes to my physical and mental
  • 00:02:28
health what what is one step that I can
  • 00:02:30
take to get closer to where I want to be
  • 00:02:32
or to get closer to building a life that
  • 00:02:34
I love when it comes to my physical
  • 00:02:35
health for me it's I know from when it
  • 00:02:37
comes to my physical health I want to
  • 00:02:39
eat more I want to take my diet more
  • 00:02:40
seriously and I want to take exercise
  • 00:02:41
more seriously and I've got a goal that
  • 00:02:43
I kind of want to be a gymshark athlete
  • 00:02:45
and I kind of want a body like Sam
  • 00:02:46
colder like that's like to me a cool
  • 00:02:48
goal to aim towards so it's like cool
  • 00:02:51
now I have identified what I think a
  • 00:02:54
life that I love would be in terms of
  • 00:02:55
health that's not to say I'm not
  • 00:02:56
currently living a life I love and it's
  • 00:02:57
like oh cool it would be cool to go on
  • 00:02:59
that journey to get to that point and
  • 00:03:01
I've identified what the goal is
  • 00:03:02
similarly when it comes to work like how
  • 00:03:04
do I ideally want to be spending my time
  • 00:03:06
what are the things I actually want to
  • 00:03:07
be doing and in particular like is the
  • 00:03:10
way that I'm currently spending my time
  • 00:03:12
does that energize me and I often think
  • 00:03:14
about this it's like if I look at my
  • 00:03:15
calendar if I look at the things that I
  • 00:03:18
actually do with my time how many of
  • 00:03:19
those energize me and how many of those
  • 00:03:21
drain me and another question I think
  • 00:03:23
about I'm just gonna give you all the
  • 00:03:24
different Frameworks that I use for this
  • 00:03:25
is it's it's what I call the the fast
  • 00:03:28
forward test where are we so it's like
  • 00:03:32
    fast
  • 00:03:33
    forward
  • 00:03:37
    test
  • 00:03:40
the fast forward test is basically let's
  • 00:03:42
take a standard day in your life and and
  • 00:03:44
let's say you know with each with each
  • 00:03:46
thing that you do you have the option to
  • 00:03:48
fast forward to the end of the thing
  • 00:03:50
do you press the button like where you
  • 00:03:52
don't experience the thing that you're
  • 00:03:54
doing you just fast forward to the end
  • 00:03:55
and get the result at the end like for
  • 00:03:56
example let's say you have a day job do
  • 00:03:58
you choose to fast forward meetings
  • 00:04:00
and just so you can get to the end of
  • 00:04:02
them if you could fast forward to the
  • 00:04:04
end of your workday would you choose to
  • 00:04:06
fast forward to the end of your work day
  • 00:04:07
now back when I was working as a doctor
  • 00:04:09
I actually would if you'd offered me a
  • 00:04:11
fast forward button I would have pressed
  • 00:04:12
it because even though it was kind of
  • 00:04:13
fun there was still a better things I
  • 00:04:16
would have wanted to be doing and if I'd
  • 00:04:17
been given a fast forward button I would
  • 00:04:18
have pressed that button almost every
  • 00:04:20
workday I wouldn't have pressed that
  • 00:04:21
button if I was teaching medical
  • 00:04:23
    students because I genuinely enjoyed
  • 00:04:24
teaching medical students and I got a
  • 00:04:26
lot of energy out of it I wouldn't press
  • 00:04:28
the fast forward button doing this live
  • 00:04:29
stream right now because it's quite fun
  • 00:04:31
and I feel like you get energy from it
  • 00:04:32
and so I find that that fast forward
  • 00:04:34
test is a way of figuring out like am I
  • 00:04:37
actually living a life I love because to
  • 00:04:39
me like my definition of a life that I
  • 00:04:41
love is one where I wouldn't fast
  • 00:04:44
forward very many things in my life
  • 00:04:45
because I'd wanna I'd actually want to
  • 00:04:46
experience the things that I'm doing and
  • 00:04:48
then finally when it comes to
  • 00:04:48
    relationships we talked about health
  • 00:04:49
    work and relationships basically what
  • 00:04:51
we're trying to do is just figure out
  • 00:04:52
like where do we want to be and where
  • 00:04:55
are we currently at and just generate
  • 00:04:56
some ideas it's all about generating
  • 00:04:58
ideas and again coming back to this idea
  • 00:05:00
that we talked about at the beginning
  • 00:05:01
this sort of design thinking thing like
  • 00:05:04
let's say you want to create something
  • 00:05:05
like an iPhone the way the iPhone is
  • 00:05:07
created it's not like someone has an
  • 00:05:08
idea for like the iPhone is going to
  • 00:05:10
happen and then they invent the iPhone
  • 00:05:11
it's like they figure out what is the
  • 00:05:12
problem they identify they get clarity
  • 00:05:15
on what's wrong with what's on the
  • 00:05:16
market right now and then they throw a
  • 00:05:18
lot of ideas it's like throwing a lot of
  • 00:05:19
spaghetti at the wall and seeing what
  • 00:05:20
sticks and using that spaghetti and
  • 00:05:23
those ideas throwing and like taking
  • 00:05:24
    steps in different directions and
  • 00:05:27
getting data over time so this whole
  • 00:05:29
thing of building a life that you love
  • 00:05:30
like the mistake I find that people make
  • 00:05:32
with this is that it's it's too easy to
  • 00:05:34
think of it as being a one and done
  • 00:05:35
thing but actually it's a very long
  • 00:05:37
process over the course of our entire
  • 00:05:39
life we're constantly striving to build
  • 00:05:41
a life that we love while enjoying the
  • 00:05:43
journey along the way so design thinking
  • 00:05:45
identify get clarity on what this what
  • 00:05:48
this actually looks like one way of
  • 00:05:50
doing that so we talked about the fast
  • 00:05:52
forward test that's one way of doing
  • 00:05:53
that the other way of doing that is
  • 00:05:55
    something called The Odyssey plan
  • 00:05:59
now I first came across this in 2019 and
  • 00:06:02
it's sick this exercise has changed the
  • 00:06:05
life of me and so many other people that
  • 00:06:07
I know the Odyssey plan is an exercise
  • 00:06:09
that's from um designing your life the
  • 00:06:12
Stanford Business School thing about how
  • 00:06:14
to design life that you love and it's
  • 00:06:16
basically the idea that you ask yourself
  • 00:06:17
three questions number one you ask
  • 00:06:19
yourself five years from now what does
  • 00:06:21
my current life look like like if I were
  • 00:06:23
to fast forward five years what would a
  • 00:06:25
day in my life look like then number two
  • 00:06:27
you're like all right cool scrap that if
  • 00:06:29
I were to take a completely different
  • 00:06:30
    path
  • 00:06:31
five years from now what does my life
  • 00:06:33
look like cool now you scrap that and
  • 00:06:35
then you think okay number three five
  • 00:06:37
years from now what does my life look
  • 00:06:39
like if I take a different path but
  • 00:06:40
where I don't have to worry about money
  • 00:06:42
and I don't have to worry about what
  • 00:06:44
other people expect of me or societal
  • 00:06:46
    expectations or societal obligations or
  • 00:06:47
if I won the lottery like and what you
  • 00:06:50
essentially do is that with the Odyssey
  • 00:06:52
plan you map out what are those three
  • 00:06:54
    paths
  • 00:06:56
now the point of this is not to commit
  • 00:06:58
to any one of those paths but it's just
  • 00:07:00
to systematically try and answer the
  • 00:07:01
question what does it mean to me to
  • 00:07:03
build a life that I love and in back in
  • 00:07:05
    2019 I was still working full-time as a
  • 00:07:06
doctor and my whole life plan was that I
  • 00:07:08
was going to do training and anesthetics
  • 00:07:10
I was going to become a physiology
  • 00:07:11
supervisor in Cambridge I was going to
  • 00:07:13
become a fellow of Emmanuel College
  • 00:07:14
which is the college I went to and I was
  • 00:07:16
going to do like I don't know four days
  • 00:07:17
a week training and anesthetics and
  • 00:07:18
    become an anesthetist or
  • 00:07:20
anesthesiologist if you're in the US
  • 00:07:21
that was my whole plan and I kind of
  • 00:07:24
wrote out in pretty reasonable detail
  • 00:07:26
what that looks like five years from now
  • 00:07:27
and then I asked myself I looked at that
  • 00:07:30
    I was like
  • 00:07:31
this is just not very exciting the
  • 00:07:33
thought of this being my life five years
  • 00:07:36
from now does not actually energize me
  • 00:07:38
    it does not excite me
  • 00:07:39
and that was a massive thing for me of
  • 00:07:42
like oh crap like this path that I've
  • 00:07:44
been going on is not actually a path
  • 00:07:46
that I want to be on and so that
  • 00:07:47
resulted in me basically kind of
  • 00:07:48
re-evaluating my life and changing up
  • 00:07:51
where I ended up and that's how I
  • 00:07:52
actually ended up here today speaking to
  • 00:07:54
you on this live stream because I
  • 00:07:55
decided that actually this YouTube stuff
  • 00:07:56
and the teaching stuff and the writing
  • 00:07:58
stuff and writing a book and all of that
  • 00:07:59
seemed to me at the time to be more
  • 00:08:01
exciting and more energizing and this is
  • 00:08:03
the thing that I did about three years
  • 00:08:04
ago and I think like are you know doing
  • 00:08:05
it every few years or even every year
  • 00:08:07
depending on how quickly your life is
  • 00:08:08
changing is like helpful because again
  • 00:08:10
it just generates some ideas and really
  • 00:08:12
it just comes down to this thing of like
  • 00:08:15
    how do you identify what
  • 00:08:17
living a life you love means means for
  • 00:08:19
you a big part of it is to generate
  • 00:08:21
ideas of what it could look like because
  • 00:08:23
you're never going to know unless you
  • 00:08:24
try things out you can kind of analysis
  • 00:08:26
paralysis yourself with this all you
  • 00:08:28
like until you actually try things out
  • 00:08:29
you're never going to know what a life
  • 00:08:31
that you love actually means and for me
  • 00:08:33
I recognized when I was in medical
  • 00:08:34
    school that like um
  • 00:08:36
if I become a full-time doctor that to
  • 00:08:39
me is not really a life that I love cool
  • 00:08:40
what are some other things I can do how
  • 00:08:42
can I dip my toes into a bunch of
  • 00:08:43
different things how can I you know I
  • 00:08:45
tried starting a med tech app I started
  • 00:08:47
joined a lot of societies I started
  • 00:08:48
tried starting a business and the
  • 00:08:51
business stuff was fun the med tech
  • 00:08:52
stuff was fun the teaching stuff was
  • 00:08:53
really fun so I was like cool I'm
  • 00:08:55
enjoying the thing I'm taking steps
  • 00:08:57
towards this thing still not fully
  • 00:08:58
enjoying medicine itself but like I
  • 00:08:59
    really enjoy teaching medical students
  • 00:09:00
maybe I could take some steps down the
  • 00:09:02
teaching route and I took some steps
  • 00:09:03
down that path and some more dining
  • 00:09:04
    entrepreneur entrepreneurship path and
  • 00:09:06
    eventually landed on this YouTube
  • 00:09:07
channel where I was like oh hello
  • 00:09:08
there's something here let's take some
  • 00:09:10
more steps and it's a constant stage of
  • 00:09:12
like just putting building blocks down
  • 00:09:13
over time and eventually building to a
  • 00:09:15
point where I can comfortably say that
  • 00:09:17
    I'm a 10 out of 10 on the I currently
  • 00:09:18
live a life that I love scale but I'm
  • 00:09:20
still over time trying to kind of
  • 00:09:22
increase increase that as well and try
  • 00:09:24
oh I want to increase that I guess I'm
  • 00:09:26
still over time trying to continuously
  • 00:09:28
put down blocks which is why I have
  • 00:09:30
goals in the realm of health and
  • 00:09:31
relationships and work and all this kind
  • 00:09:32
of stuff so anyway all that to say that
  • 00:09:35
    that is
  • 00:09:36
I'm doing I'm being quite rambly here
  • 00:09:38
    step one of this method
  • 00:09:40
how to build a life that you love step
  • 00:09:42
one is you identify some options ideas
  • 00:09:45
and options what are some things you
  • 00:09:47
could try it's all about trying to find
  • 00:09:49
things that we can try and then step two
  • 00:09:52
    is experiment
  • 00:09:55
and I love the word experiment I love
  • 00:09:57
the word experiment because it's kind of
  • 00:09:58
sciency and it makes me think of myself
  • 00:10:00
as a bit of a science bro but I also
  • 00:10:01
love the word experiment because it just
  • 00:10:03
it takes the pressure off back when I
  • 00:10:05
started my YouTube channel it was not a
  • 00:10:06
case of I'm going to start a YouTube
  • 00:10:07
channel it's going to be successful and
  • 00:10:09
I know what I'm doing it was a case of I
  • 00:10:11
have an idea identify that hey maybe I
  • 00:10:14
can put a building block down towards
  • 00:10:16
building a life I love by starting a
  • 00:10:18
YouTube channel cool now let's turn this
  • 00:10:19
into an experiment let's give it a go
  • 00:10:21
let's see what happens I made a video on
  • 00:10:23
my bed being like hey I'm just gonna
  • 00:10:25
start a vlog so for the past few days
  • 00:10:27
I've kind of had the idea that it would
  • 00:10:29
be really cool to start with vlogging
  • 00:10:31
and I was like cool let's just put it up
  • 00:10:32
there edited in Premiere watched a few
  • 00:10:35
tutorials I was like cool I'm gonna just
  • 00:10:36
put some stuff out there I'm gonna throw
  • 00:10:38
spaghetti in the world and see what
  • 00:10:39
sticks and I was like you know what I'm
  • 00:10:40
gonna make some bmap tutorial videos
  • 00:10:42
because I had a business helping people
  • 00:10:43
get into med school why don't I make
  • 00:10:44
some videos teaching people how to get
  • 00:10:45
to med school and then people started
  • 00:10:47
asking me do some Vlogs of Life as a as
  • 00:10:50
a medical student I was like cool I'll
  • 00:10:51
do some Vlogs about life as a medical
  • 00:10:53
student see what happens then people
  • 00:10:54
started asking me hey how do you study
  • 00:10:56
for exams you seem intelligent like
  • 00:10:58
teach us how to study I was like all
  • 00:10:59
right cool I'll do that and at every
  • 00:11:01
step I didn't have a plan I had no idea
  • 00:11:02
what I was doing but I was just taking
  • 00:11:04
some small steps along the path putting
  • 00:11:06
the blocks down towards just exploring
  • 00:11:08
this Avenue and there are loads of
  • 00:11:09
people I know who start a YouTube
  • 00:11:10
    channel
  • 00:11:11
for whom they realized six months in you
  • 00:11:13
know what this isn't for me I've tried
  • 00:11:14
    the experiment I don't enjoy it I don't
  • 00:11:17
want to do this thing but for me I tried
  • 00:11:18
the experiment and it went well I was
  • 00:11:20
like oh cool this is actually kind of
  • 00:11:21
fun it's energizing it's exciting this
  • 00:11:23
is good I like the idea of being a
  • 00:11:24
YouTuber let's continue down this path
  • 00:11:26
and so that's that that's where this
  • 00:11:27
idea of experimenting comes in and you
  • 00:11:31
know there's another way of thinking of
  • 00:11:33
    it is you know prototypes
  • 00:11:35
like if we go back to our sort of design
  • 00:11:37
    thinking thinking example let's say
  • 00:11:39
you're trying to design the new to
  • 00:11:40
design the iPhone from scratch and
  • 00:11:41
people have no idea what's going on they
  • 00:11:44
worked with like hundreds thousands of
  • 00:11:45
different prototypes that what would it
  • 00:11:47
look like if the touchscreen was like
  • 00:11:48
this what would it look like if and the
  • 00:11:50
button was in the middle or on the top
  • 00:11:51
or on the side if we had a back button
  • 00:11:53
they tried out so many of these things
  • 00:11:54
and they were just trying out
  • 00:11:55
experiments to see what works and they
  • 00:11:57
were getting data from those experiments
  • 00:11:59
in their internal testing to see is this
  • 00:12:01
actually the thing that we want to make
  • 00:12:02
it's just all about experimentation you
  • 00:12:04
get an idea and then you try it out and
  • 00:12:06
the mistake that people make like you
  • 00:12:07
know this is a massive massive issue
  • 00:12:09
that I see is that over here
  • 00:12:12
they kind of don't do anything
  • 00:12:14
they have an idea it's like oh I reckon
  • 00:12:16
it'll be cool to start a podcast or
  • 00:12:17
start a YouTube channel and they don't
  • 00:12:19
take action they let the fear of getting
  • 00:12:21
started stop them from just even
  • 00:12:22
experimenting but the point is it's all
  • 00:12:24
about having this sort of experimental
  • 00:12:25
and prototyping attitude to I guess life
  • 00:12:29
and really the way I think of it is what
  • 00:12:31
is the smallest step that I can take
  • 00:12:33
it's all about the smallest step this is
  • 00:12:35
another area where I see a lot of at
  • 00:12:36
least in the context of YouTube in
  • 00:12:37
context of my part-time YouTuber Academy
  • 00:12:38
people make mistakes where it's like oh
  • 00:12:40
    I don't know if I should completely
  • 00:12:42
    change my Niche it's like I don't I
  • 00:12:44
don't want to do makeup content anymore
  • 00:12:45
    let's see a different I don't want to do
  • 00:12:47
productivity content anymore I want to
  • 00:12:48
do Finance content now and they start
  • 00:12:50
thinking like oh my God my whole channel
  • 00:12:51
is going to become a finance Channel how
  • 00:12:53
    do I do this what's the plan I don't
  • 00:12:55
know okay your idea is maybe you like
  • 00:12:57
the idea of making Finance content what
  • 00:12:59
is the smallest step you can take can
  • 00:13:00
you put out a community post being like
  • 00:13:02
hey thinking of making a finance video
  • 00:13:03
what do you guys think can you just put
  • 00:13:04
out a single video can you do a live
  • 00:13:06
stream where you talk about Finance like
  • 00:13:07
what is the smallest step you can take
  • 00:13:09
to experiment with this idea and see if
  • 00:13:11
you actually enjoy the thing and then we
  • 00:13:13
come to the tip number three or kind of
  • 00:13:16
number step number three which is to
  • 00:13:18
    iterate
  • 00:13:20
and this is another thing that they do
  • 00:13:21
in startups and product design and
  • 00:13:23
anything like that you have an idea you
  • 00:13:25
make the thing you prototype you do an
  • 00:13:27
experiment and then you iterate you see
  • 00:13:29
how it felt to do the thing and then you
  • 00:13:31
improve based on that thing that you've
  • 00:13:33
done and it always becomes this like
  • 00:13:35
    sort of constant experimentation
  • 00:13:37
feedback loop where you identify you
  • 00:13:40
experiment and then you iterate and then
  • 00:13:42
you go back to identifying so again like
  • 00:13:44
to use an example like I know I
  • 00:13:46
identified I want to have a body like
  • 00:13:47
Sam coder for whatever for whatever
  • 00:13:49
that's worth and so now I'm
  • 00:13:50
experimenting I'm like you know what I'm
  • 00:13:51
gonna hire a personal trainer I'm going
  • 00:13:52
to try going to the gym uh personal
  • 00:13:54
trainer a didn't quite enjoy the
  • 00:13:55
sessions too many High Reps the volume
  • 00:13:58
was too high cool let's try another
  • 00:14:01
method and so I downloaded Jeff
  • 00:14:02
    niphard's Guide to the minimalist
  • 00:14:04
workout routine the other day and I
  • 00:14:06
found another personal trainer and then
  • 00:14:08
I'm gonna say to him look man I don't
  • 00:14:09
like doing like 20 reps of stuff I just
  • 00:14:11
want to do the sort of five to eight rep
  • 00:14:12
range can we try that because I want to
  • 00:14:14
get a body like Sam colder there's like
  • 00:14:15
these are trivial examples but it's it's
  • 00:14:17
the idea of Step One identify an area in
  • 00:14:19
which you could try to experiment step
  • 00:14:21
two run that experiment and step three
  • 00:14:22
use the data to then feed back into
  • 00:14:24
identifying what you want to do next and
  • 00:14:27
as long as you're continuing to take
  • 00:14:28
    small steps
  • 00:14:29
then eventually you just you would
  • 00:14:31
answer yes to the question of am I
  • 00:14:33
building a life that I love because
  • 00:14:34
you're taking small intentional steps in
  • 00:14:36
each of these different areas to build
  • 00:14:38
towards a life that you think you want
  • 00:14:39
but you won't actually know you want it
  • 00:14:41
until you get there and then you're
  • 00:14:42
trying to experiment and iterating and
  • 00:14:43
it becomes like a really fun Loop where
  • 00:14:45
every day you're taking some actions and
  • 00:14:48
but but really the key thing here is
  • 00:14:49
that it is it is all about that sort of
  • 00:14:51
action taking it's it's all well and
  • 00:14:53
good analyzing the hell out of things
  • 00:14:54
and and stuff but really unless it comes
  • 00:14:57
on a foundation of action and a
  • 00:14:59
    foundation of actually doing stuff
  • 00:15:00
taking the steps you know there's no use
  • 00:15:02
reading about how to get six-pack abs
  • 00:15:04
what actually gets you six or six pack
  • 00:15:06
abs or gets you in shape is doing the
  • 00:15:08
exercises it's not reading about doing
  • 00:15:09
the exercises and it's so easy for nerds
  • 00:15:11
like you and me you know if you're
  • 00:15:13
    watching this live stream you're
  • 00:15:13
probably alerted to an extent I'm
  • 00:15:15
definitely a nerd it's so easy for nerds
  • 00:15:16
like us to over analyze the hell out of
  • 00:15:18
things and just not take any action not
  • 00:15:19
take any steps thinking again mistake
  • 00:15:22
that loads of people make on my
  • 00:15:23
    part-time YouTuber Academy it's like a
  • 00:15:25
five-week live course and what they say
  • 00:15:26
is you know what I'm gonna watch all 660
  • 00:15:28
hours of content first and once I've
  • 00:15:31
watched all the content then I will
  • 00:15:32
start my YouTube channel and I always
  • 00:15:34
say no don't do that that is like the
  • 00:15:35
worst thing you can do the thing you
  • 00:15:36
should do is start your YouTube channel
  • 00:15:38
right now upload a crappy video with
  • 00:15:40
your phone right now and then watch the
  • 00:15:42
live sessions and then do the homework
  • 00:15:44
each week and as long as you're taking
  • 00:15:45
action then it's okay to analyze but
  • 00:15:47
it's not okay to analyze if you're not
  • 00:15:49
taking action and that's what this whole
  • 00:15:50
idea of designing your life is kind of
  • 00:15:52
    based around
  • 00:15:53
identify experiment take action have a
  • 00:15:55
good time now if you're interested in
  • 00:15:57
taking this idea of building a life that
  • 00:15:58
you love seriously you might like to
  • 00:16:00
check out some of my other exclusive
  • 00:16:01
content that I've got available on
  • 00:16:03
nebula if you haven't heard nebula is an
  • 00:16:04
    independent streaming platform that's
  • 00:16:06
built by me and a bunch of other
  • 00:16:07
creators and on nebula we get to put
  • 00:16:09
long form exclusive stuff that we
  • 00:16:10
    wouldn't necessarily put on YouTube
  • 00:16:11
because we'd be worried about the
  • 00:16:13
YouTube algorithm and so on nebula I've
  • 00:16:14
got a series of videos where I've done
  • 00:16:16
    live stream interviews with thinkers
  • 00:16:18
from all around the world whose work
  • 00:16:19
I've admired for years there's an
  • 00:16:20
    interview with Ryan holiday who's
  • 00:16:22
written a lot about stoicism and that
  • 00:16:23
school of philosophy we've got an
  • 00:16:25
interview with Justin Khan who was the
  • 00:16:26
co-founder of twitch which he then sold
  • 00:16:28
to Amazon for a billion dollars and how
  • 00:16:30
kind of he's trying to build a life that
  • 00:16:32
he loves after that like major success
  • 00:16:34
we've got an interview with Derek sivers
  • 00:16:35
who's one of the people on the internet
  • 00:16:36
who have admired for a long time and a
  • 00:16:38
bunch of other people who I managed to
  • 00:16:39
interview during the pandemic to ask
  • 00:16:40
basically this question of like how do
  • 00:16:42
you actually build a life that you love
  • 00:16:43
if you want to get access to nebula the
  • 00:16:44
best way is to sign up to
  • 00:16:45
    curiositystream who are very kindly
  • 00:16:46
    sponsoring this video curiositystream is
  • 00:16:48

  • 00:16:49
    streaming subscription platform that's

    curiositystream for sponsoring this
  • 00:17:41
video so we've got that we've got the
  • 00:17:42
three-part method I just want to share a
  • 00:17:44
few tips that I found really useful um
  • 00:17:46
it's like a handful of things to help me
  • 00:17:48
personally build a life that I love tip
  • 00:17:51
number one is the team of builders
  • 00:17:53
basically you want to have people around
  • 00:17:55
you who are also trying to build a life
  • 00:17:56
that they love and you want to support
  • 00:17:58
each other along in the process it's
  • 00:18:00
kind of lonely being on the personal
  • 00:18:01
development Journey if you're just doing
  • 00:18:03
it by yourself but if you have other
  • 00:18:04
people around you who are motivating you
  • 00:18:05
and who are also trying to do the thing
  • 00:18:06
then it's great again just using our
  • 00:18:08
part-time YouTuber Academy as an example
  • 00:18:10
because I think it just it is just a
  • 00:18:12
microcosm of like a lot of different
  • 00:18:14
things that people are trying to do
  • 00:18:15
people are trying to be YouTubers
  • 00:18:16
they're trying to get over their fear
  • 00:18:17
they're trying to make money all of
  • 00:18:18
    these things
  • 00:18:19
um but to use that as an example the
  • 00:18:20
    people that stick to YouTube
  • 00:18:22
consistently tend to be the ones who
  • 00:18:24
    form accountability groups and
  • 00:18:26
    essentially what an accountability group
  • 00:18:27
is is like you get a couple of people
  • 00:18:28
together usually like two or three and
  • 00:18:30
you decide every week we're gonna have a
  • 00:18:32
zoom call where we hold each other
  • 00:18:33
accountable to the things that we're
  • 00:18:34
going to do people in my team do this
  • 00:18:36
Tin Tin Angus and buff have a little
  • 00:18:38
    accountability group that meets every
  • 00:18:39
Monday at 5 PM in fact they did it like
  • 00:18:41
yeah a few days ago they meet every
  • 00:18:43
Monday at 5 pm and each of them has the
  • 00:18:45
floor for like five minutes and they say
  • 00:18:46
okay here's what I'm working on this
  • 00:18:48
week and then they check in the
  • 00:18:49
following week to be like did I actually
  • 00:18:51
do the thing and this is the idea of
  • 00:18:52
having a team of Builders around you you
  • 00:18:54
probably have some friends in your life
  • 00:18:55
some colleagues some family members even
  • 00:18:57
people on the internet you can find a
  • 00:18:58
lot of these accountability groups are
  • 00:19:00
online where you can find people who are
  • 00:19:02
also trying to do the same thing and
  • 00:19:03
it's so much easier to work towards
  • 00:19:05
building a life that you love if you can
  • 00:19:06
find a team of Builders to do it with
  • 00:19:08
you even just a friend even just two
  • 00:19:10
friends I think three is like an ideal
  • 00:19:11
size of a WhatsApp group you can do that
  • 00:19:13
find a team of Builders around you tip
  • 00:19:14
number two is something I've started
  • 00:19:15
doing recently that I've got a lot of
  • 00:19:17
    manage out is essentially
  • 00:19:20
a method called the three alarms what
  • 00:19:24
    are the three alarms well
  • 00:19:25
the philosophy behind this method the
  • 00:19:27
three alarm method is the idea that
  • 00:19:30
actions tend to follow from Identity so
  • 00:19:33
it's like if I think of myself as
  • 00:19:36
someone who is a healthy person someone
  • 00:19:38
who is a gymshark athlete I am more
  • 00:19:40
likely to make healthy Life Choices when
  • 00:19:41
it comes to eating well and when it
  • 00:19:43
comes to exercising if I think of myself
  • 00:19:45
as someone who cares a lot about
  • 00:19:47
relationships I'm then more likely to
  • 00:19:49
take the actions that mean I care a lot
  • 00:19:51
about relationships it tends not to be
  • 00:19:53
action first it's not like I'll go to
  • 00:19:55
the gym x amount of times and then I'll
  • 00:19:57
start to think of myself as a healthy
  • 00:19:58
person it's more like when I start
  • 00:20:00
thinking of myself as a healthy person I
  • 00:20:01
then start to go to the gym more often
  • 00:20:03
and the three alarms method is a method
  • 00:20:04
that my coach Eric partaker came up with
  • 00:20:06
and he's got a book about this called
  • 00:20:07
the three alarms I will literally show
  • 00:20:09
you what is currently on my phone it's a
  • 00:20:11
bit cringe but that's okay I'm getting
  • 00:20:13
the fear getting over the fear of being
  • 00:20:15
being cringy over here this is it let me
  • 00:20:17
show you my phone this is like no word
  • 00:20:18
of a lie this is this is what's on my
  • 00:20:20
phone right now I basically have three
  • 00:20:22
alarms on my phone the first alarm says
  • 00:20:24
    humble and inspiring teacher
  • 00:20:28
hello cringe the second alarm says
  • 00:20:30
gymshark athlete and the third alarm
  • 00:20:32
    says relationship sustainer so basically
  • 00:20:35
every day at 9am this alarm goes off and
  • 00:20:37
it just goes and it says humble and
  • 00:20:40
inspiring teacher because that is the
  • 00:20:41
identity that I want to embody in my
  • 00:20:44
    work yeah I mean I I cringe a bit as I
  • 00:20:46
say this I hope you'll forgive me but
  • 00:20:48
just that reminder that comes up on my
  • 00:20:49
other watch little product placement and
  • 00:20:51
on my phone it's enough to remind me
  • 00:20:53
that yeah those are the things I wanna I
  • 00:20:55
wanna approach my life with then at 5 PM
  • 00:20:56
which is as you can see 16 minutes from
  • 00:20:58
now because it's 1644 this alarm is
  • 00:21:00
going to go off and it's going to say
  • 00:21:01
    gymshark athlete because that's the
  • 00:21:03
    identity I want to embody
  • 00:21:05
and that means I've decided I'm gonna go
  • 00:21:06
to the gym and it's just a reminder oh
  • 00:21:08
yeah I'm now in gymshark Catholic mode I
  • 00:21:10
should go to the gym and
  • 00:21:11
    the 30 relationship sustainer again
  • 00:21:13
sounds a bit cringe but like that's the
  • 00:21:15
alarm that's going to go off uh at 6 30
  • 00:21:17
and I've got some friends coming over
  • 00:21:18
    for dinner at 6 30 because I decided I
  • 00:21:21
want to be the sort of person that
  • 00:21:22
    sustains relationships and builds new
  • 00:21:23
    ones and therefore
  • 00:21:25
um that's the alarm and it's just nice
  • 00:21:27
it's nice to have I've been doing this
  • 00:21:28
I've had these alarms on my phone for
  • 00:21:30
the last several weeks and I have
  • 00:21:31
genuinely found it helpful and it's you
  • 00:21:33
don't have to pay anything for it it's
  • 00:21:34
free you can just decide in the in the
  • 00:21:36
realm of work health and relationships
  • 00:21:38
I.E the three big Realms of Life what's
  • 00:21:40
the identity you want in body and just
  • 00:21:41
make an alarm on your phone that
  • 00:21:42
encourages you to actually do the thing
  • 00:21:44
the final tip for building a life you
  • 00:21:46
    love
  • 00:21:47
is also from the book three alarm and
  • 00:21:49
    that's
  • 00:21:50
    um
  • 00:21:51
I mean he calls it like Champion proofs
  • 00:21:53
    or something like that
  • 00:21:57
and basically the idea there is every
  • 00:21:59
day you want to prove to yourself that
  • 00:22:02
in the three Realms of life that you
  • 00:22:04
care about in my case you know Health
  • 00:22:06
    work and relationships
  • 00:22:09
there's three Realms of life you want to
  • 00:22:11
prove to yourself that like you are
  • 00:22:12
taking a small action to build a life
  • 00:22:15
that you love every day and so you can
  • 00:22:17
plan that at the start of your day each
  • 00:22:18
morning I look at my bullet Journal when
  • 00:22:19
I'm doing my planning and I'm just
  • 00:22:20
thinking to myself okay these are the
  • 00:22:22
three identities I want to have humble
  • 00:22:23
and inspiring teacher well uh gymshark
  • 00:22:25
    athlete and relationship sustainer what
  • 00:22:27
is an action I'm going to take across
  • 00:22:28
each of those and it might be something
  • 00:22:30
small and the realm of Health it's today
  • 00:22:32
I'm going to go to the gym or today I'm
  • 00:22:33
going to go for a walk or today I'm
  • 00:22:35
gonna go for a run and that reminds me
  • 00:22:37
that I am kind of embodying my identity
  • 00:22:40
of being a gym shark athlete in the
  • 00:22:42
realm of work humbly inspiring teacher I
  • 00:22:44
    might think you know what
  • 00:22:45
um like earlier today I decided I was
  • 00:22:47
going to do this live stream because I
  • 00:22:48
want to experiment with the idea of
  • 00:22:50
trying to come across as a helpline
  • 00:22:51
inspiring teacher LOL cringe uh on
  • 00:22:54
something like live stream which might
  • 00:22:55
be kind of fun it might be kind of cool
  • 00:22:56
and I get to interact with the chat and
  • 00:22:57
it's been super fun it's that sick and
  • 00:23:00
then in the relationships front what am
  • 00:23:01
I doing today well I need to call my
  • 00:23:03
grandma that's something I still have to
  • 00:23:04
do she's in Pakistan right now
  • 00:23:06
um but I've also got this dinner with my
  • 00:23:07
guy friends who haven't seen in a while
  • 00:23:09
um so I arranged to dinner a couple
  • 00:23:10
weeks ago when I decided I wanted to be
  • 00:23:12
a relationship sustainer so that method
  • 00:23:15
of like just a few tips that I found
  • 00:23:17
super super helpful in the last few
  • 00:23:18
weeks that I genuinely use every day
  • 00:23:19
thinking about having a team of Builders
  • 00:23:21
setting these three alarms on my phone
  • 00:23:23
and kind of sort of reminding myself
  • 00:23:26
what are these Championship proofs well
  • 00:23:28
how how will I prove to myself that I
  • 00:23:30
    actually am putting putting down
  • 00:23:31
building blocks to build a life that I
  • 00:23:33
love that's what I find helpful
  • 00:23:35
hopefully you find it helpful as well so
  • 00:23:36
that brings us to the end of this uh
  • 00:23:38
somewhat experimental video about how to
  • 00:23:39
kind of design a build a life that you
  • 00:23:41
love if you enjoyed this you might like
  • 00:23:43
to check out that video over there which
  • 00:23:44
is my video around how I manage my time
  • 00:23:46
and my favorite productivity tips for
  • 00:23:48
squeezing most out of my time while
  • 00:23:49
having fun and while not burning out so
  • 00:23:51
thanks for watching and I'll see you
  • 00:23:52
    later bye
