00:00:00
if you look at the 10 highest rated
00:00:01
shows on my anime list you'll notice
00:00:03
that only one of them has a female lead
00:00:05
protagonist extending that to the top 20
00:00:08
you get around five there are lots of
00:00:09
things people point to when explaining
00:00:11
this circumstance but the most common
00:00:13
argument I've seen is that anime and
00:00:14
manga has predominantly a male audience
00:00:17
and while there's likely correlation
00:00:18
between a character's gender and
00:00:20
audience member's ability to relate to
00:00:21
them much more important is how well a
00:00:23
character is crafted and while gender
00:00:25
can be important especially for
00:00:27
character writing I don't think it's as
00:00:28
fundamental as people think think for
00:00:30
audience's ability to connect with a
00:00:32
character take me for example I'm a
00:00:34
26-year-old man but when we look at my
00:00:36
top 10 anime of all time seven of them
00:00:38
have female leads and four of these
00:00:40
shows have been released in the last 2
00:00:42
years now a lot of these shows in my top
00:00:44
10 are also built around an ensemble
00:00:46
cast so it's not uncommon for them to
00:00:47
have male leads too but I still think
00:00:49
there's a point there in how many
00:00:51
stories are embracing female
00:00:53
protagonists and doing it really well my
00:00:56
name is pay and today we're talking
00:00:57
about anime's new golden age an era of
00:01:00
well-written female
00:01:02
leads I don't think this era is
00:01:04
something that's on its way I think it's
00:01:05
arrived this video is completely built
00:01:07
around how many good shows have been
00:01:09
released lately with great female
00:01:10
protagonists and as I looked into these
00:01:12
characters and started to research them
00:01:14
I found five fundamental pillars that
00:01:16
each of them shared these characters
00:01:17
were competent with compelling flaws
00:01:20
they were charming and easy to root for
00:01:22
and while their gender was a fundamental
00:01:23
part of their character writing they
00:01:25
were also compelling and interesting
00:01:27
characters independent of it now I know
00:01:29
what you're thinking four protagonists
00:01:31
five pillars how is this going to work
00:01:33
well you're just going to have to wait
00:01:34
and see now I'm not arguing that these
00:01:36
five pillars are necessary to make a
00:01:37
good main character or even a good
00:01:39
female main character I've just found
00:01:41
them to be overlapping traits of all my
00:01:43
favorite recent examples of female
00:01:45
protagonists by the way that was a
00:01:46
deceptively hard tongue twister to say
00:01:48
it took me like eight takes now I
00:01:50
believe each one of these characters is
00:01:52
a good representation of all of the
00:01:53
pillars but my roommate who helped me
00:01:55
write this video suggested that I use
00:01:57
one character as an example of each
00:01:59
pillar and I thought that was a really
00:02:01
cool idea so let's start with the first
00:02:04
competency stories are built around this
00:02:06
tight RPP walk of capability often
00:02:09
protagonists need to be capable enough
00:02:11
to engage and have influence but not too
00:02:13
capable as to remove all Stakes an
00:02:16
essential part of most storytelling is
00:02:17
creating some level of satisfaction so
00:02:20
there's this really important balance
00:02:21
that needs to be struck between
00:02:22
competency and limitations with some
00:02:25
distinct exceptions if characters are
00:02:27
too competent or too limited it makes
00:02:29
for boring story stories and something
00:02:30
that all four of these protagonists have
00:02:32
is really interesting skill sets and the
00:02:34
example I'm going to be pointing at
00:02:36
today is Boi from Boi The Rock she's a
00:02:38
character that's more often defined by
00:02:40
her shortcomings than her capabilities
00:02:42
Boi's social anxiety is a central
00:02:44
component of not only her character Arc
00:02:46
but also the plot and because those
00:02:48
flaws are being leaned on so heavily
00:02:50
it's very important that there's a
00:02:52
balancing factor and where Boi's
00:02:54
competency is most expressed is in her
00:02:56
musicianship as someone who's worked as
00:02:58
a professional musician to me so far Boi
00:03:01
the rock is the Pinnacle of Music
00:03:03
related storytelling it's something that
00:03:05
so many different stories have failed to
00:03:06
do well because skill set and capability
00:03:09
should come with two important factors
00:03:12
it should be inspired and it should be
00:03:14
deserved Boi's musicianship is Central
00:03:16
to the plotline of the story Boi's
00:03:19
choice to play the guitar comes from a
00:03:20
very motivated place it's set up really
00:03:22
well by this Duality overwhelming social
00:03:24
anxiety conflicting with a deep urge to
00:03:26
be accepted and to engage a dream of
00:03:29
being ble to sit comfortably in the
00:03:31
Limelight but a deep overwhelming
00:03:32
discomfort at the idea Boi's inspiration
00:03:35
came when she was a young girl who saw a
00:03:36
musician on TV who was capable of being
00:03:39
an introvert but still sitting
00:03:40
comfortably in the Limelight so in
00:03:42
response she chose to pursue developing
00:03:44
that skill herself and spent years
00:03:46
working towards that goal because
00:03:48
musicianship is often assumed to be some
00:03:50
innate Talent OR gift but always it is a
00:03:53
byproduct of lots of hard work time and
00:03:56
effort the story sets up Boi's skill set
00:03:58
really well leading to my second point
00:04:00
about competency when it feels deserved
00:04:03
furin Mau mitsumi and bochi all have
00:04:06
skill sets that are set up really well
00:04:08
they work in conjunction and are built
00:04:09
off of both characters flaws and
00:04:11
personality they come with consequence
00:04:13
don't break the plot line and more than
00:04:15
anything serve the story and character
00:04:16
arcs having a competent protagonist can
00:04:19
lead to such a satisfying viewing
00:04:20
experience but only if it's balanced
00:04:22
well which leads to our second pillar
00:04:24
compelling
00:04:26
flaws the reason I chose Boi to talk
00:04:28
about with the first pillar is because
00:04:30
while she was more defined by her flaws
00:04:32
competency was an incredibly important
00:04:34
balancing factor for making a compelling
00:04:36
character and to highlight the inverse
00:04:38
let's look at an incredibly competent
00:04:39
character who is balanced by her flaws
00:04:42
Mau from Apothecary Diaries this show
00:04:45
does not hold up nearly as much as I
00:04:47
thought it would now don't get me wrong
00:04:48
it's fun and engaging with outstanding
00:04:50
characters and I really enjoyed it in my
00:04:52
first watch through and even in
00:04:53
revisiting it I enjoyed it as well but
00:04:56
the main gimmick is this episodic
00:04:57
Sherlock Holmes esque Detective story
00:05:00
where m is capable of using her skill
00:05:02
set to unearth some sort of mystery the
00:05:04
problem is those Mysteries do not hold
00:05:06
up in retrospect other detective shows
00:05:08
do the Mysteries much better than
00:05:10
Apothecary Diaries does actually kind of
00:05:12
across the entire show it felt like
00:05:13
there was no depth in the second viewing
00:05:15
that I didn't see in the First with one
00:05:17
exception which is why I love the show
00:05:19
as much as I do I would argue that
00:05:21
Apothecary Diaries isn't as well rounded
00:05:23
as the other shows that I had on my list
00:05:25
but it made the list because I liked the
00:05:26
character writing so much and at the
00:05:28
Forefront of all of this is Mau as the
00:05:30
protagonist her character is just so
00:05:32
sick I love the way she's written so
00:05:34
much and while obviously centered of
00:05:36
that is her capability it's balanced by
00:05:38
her flaws anime is no stranger to making
00:05:41
overpowered characters that seem too
00:05:43
perfect I think it's a very uninspired
00:05:45
way to write a character and I think one
00:05:47
of the best places to look when it comes
00:05:48
to character writing is how will they
00:05:50
play around faults when there are
00:05:52
personality traits and skills that
00:05:53
benefit a character it's really cool for
00:05:55
it to also function as a double-edged
00:05:57
sword there's this fantasy author named
00:05:59
Brandon Sanderson that I quote a lot and
00:06:01
one of my favorites was when he was
00:06:02
talking about magic systems while what a
00:06:04
Magic system can do is interesting it's
00:06:06
more interesting what it can't do and I
00:06:09
think that's even more true with
00:06:10
characters that are hyper skilled look
00:06:11
at Western media Sherlock Holmes and
00:06:13
house are perfect examples of Highly
00:06:15
flawed individuals who in their world
00:06:17
are really good at what they do a great
00:06:19
example of this with Mau is that her
00:06:20
ability to be such a great detective is
00:06:22
built off of this inquisitive
00:06:24
distrusting nature a mix of curiosity
00:06:26
and pessimism but this exact same trait
00:06:28
often leads to her being completely
00:06:30
socially unaware of simple things when
00:06:32
strangers act from a place that isn't
00:06:34
malicious she's distrusting and can't
00:06:36
quite grasp it it leads to a lot of
00:06:38
really interesting conflict in the story
00:06:40
and is a direct byproduct of the things
00:06:42
that she's so good at mau's cool calm
00:06:44
and collected but then will be highly
00:06:46
expressive whenever it comes down to
00:06:48
poisons put her in a room full of
00:06:50
medicine and she'll lose her mind she
00:06:51
takes tons of actions to minimize the
00:06:54
risk of the world she lives in as a
00:06:55
young woman but is also easy to bribe
00:06:57
with any ingredient that intrigues her
00:06:59
actually the Curiosity that makes her so
00:07:01
interesting plays as a foil to that
00:07:03
self-preservation it's this cool balance
00:07:05
that puts her consistently in
00:07:07
interesting positions because while her
00:07:08
badass moments are awesome her flaws
00:07:10
make them interesting but flaws don't
00:07:13
just relate to competency they also
00:07:15
relate to charm a while ago I made an
00:07:17
entire video about how furin from furin
00:07:19
Beyond Journeys end is incredibly flawed
00:07:21
but that contributes heavily to her
00:07:23
remarkable charm it's very common for
00:07:25
protagonists to be charming and at times
00:07:27
it can be hard to Define what exactly
00:07:29
contri contributes to that charm is kind
00:07:30
of built around those untangle parts of
00:07:32
someone's personality that draws you to
00:07:34
them it's kind of like texture on a
00:07:36
painting part of the reason I argue this
00:07:38
is because sometimes it's easy to Define
00:07:40
what makes a character Charming but then
00:07:41
you can take all the inverse of those
00:07:43
traits and still result in a Charming
00:07:45
character when executed Right charm is
00:07:47
just as often built from imperfections
00:07:49
and shortcomings as it is positive
00:07:51
traits and to me every one of these
00:07:53
protagonists was overwhelmingly Charming
00:07:55
Fen is a story about an elf who's over a
00:07:57
thousand years old that struggles to
00:07:58
build lasting relationships because
00:08:00
everything seems so brief but fan is a
00:08:03
fantasy adventure story that isn't
00:08:05
really built around Stakes her skill set
00:08:07
tends to undermine any threat however
00:08:09
that doesn't make the story any less
00:08:10
compelling or engaging they compensate
00:08:13
for the lack of stakes and conflict with
00:08:15
an amazing ensemble cast with Dynamic
00:08:17
relationships at the center of that cast
00:08:19
is a cter character Done Right someone
00:08:22
whose cold removed mysterious attitude
00:08:24
doesn't get in the way of her actually
00:08:25
still being an expressive interesting
00:08:27
character because without fance charm I
00:08:30
think the story would have been
00:08:31
significantly worse but in some ways
00:08:33
that actually applies to all of these
00:08:35
protagonists Boi The Rock Apothecary
00:08:37
diary Skip and loafer and furin all
00:08:39
would be significantly worse without
00:08:41
Charming protagonists each of these
00:08:43
characters is a fun balance between
00:08:44
Sirius and silly they showcase A
00:08:47
diversity of different emotion their
00:08:49
flaws are as interesting as their skill
00:08:51
set and while I never really want a
00:08:53
perfect protagonist it is awesome when
00:08:55
characters are built around traits I
00:08:56
really admire empathy kindness the
00:08:59
ability to face fears and overcome them
00:09:01
because it's kind of impossible to talk
00:09:03
about charm without also talking about
00:09:05
characters you want to root for I feel
00:09:08
like there was this major shift in the
00:09:09
way I consumed anime after watching Skip
00:09:11
and loafer there's not a single battle
00:09:13
shown in that made my top 10 list
00:09:14
despite the fact that I've watched many
00:09:16
and enjoyed most I'm not sure exactly
00:09:18
what the shift was but there's something
00:09:20
about well executed Slice of Life that's
00:09:22
both engaging and Incredibly easy on the
00:09:24
Heart Skip and loafer hiq kagi AMA love
00:09:27
his War they're all shows that I turned
00:09:29
to whenever I really want to feel better
00:09:31
they're wholesome comforting and
00:09:33
engaging and they don't fall prey to the
00:09:34
problems that I've historically
00:09:35
struggled with Slice of Life where
00:09:37
conflict is either non-existent or
00:09:39
incredibly contrived but there's
00:09:40
something specifically about Skip and
00:09:42
loafer that's really interesting I can't
00:09:44
think of a single protagonist I want to
00:09:46
root for more than mitsumi she's just a
00:09:48
beam of sunshine and while I think she
00:09:50
may be the strongest example from this
00:09:52
group it's true about all of these
00:09:53
protagonists they are people I really
00:09:55
want to root for I love when heroes are
00:09:58
super empathetic and kind
00:09:59
I love when writers create well-made
00:10:01
challenges for characters to work
00:10:02
through because essentially consuming
00:10:04
any piece of media is a choice it's a
00:10:06
trade-off where you dedicate precious
00:10:07
resources like time and money while
00:10:09
giving a Storyteller the opportunity to
00:10:11
share what they've created when it's
00:10:12
done well it's just so sick now I think
00:10:14
mitsumi from Skip and loafer is
00:10:16
specifically a very good example of this
00:10:18
she has an incredibly noble cause and
00:10:20
pursuit the story starts off with her
00:10:21
kind of blissfully unaware of all the
00:10:23
mean things going on around her
00:10:24
something I love about her character is
00:10:26
she doesn't stay blissfully ignorant she
00:10:28
learns adapts and stand stands up to the
00:10:29
challenge I also think a big proponent
00:10:31
of why these four protagonists are so
00:10:33
easy to root for is the three pillars
00:10:35
that preface this they're capable
00:10:37
charming and flawed all three of these
00:10:39
components working together to help
00:10:40
create a character that's easy to
00:10:41
support more than just protagonists but
00:10:43
kind of everyday Heroes and in Fan's
00:10:45
case a literal hero all four of these
00:10:47
protagonists are kind of inherently kind
00:10:49
trying to do their best to have a
00:10:50
positive impact in their environment
00:10:52
they're all outstanding characters with
00:10:54
many traits to praise outside of the
00:10:56
fact that they're just women but being
00:10:58
woman is also important to the way
00:11:00
they're written which leads to the fifth
00:11:01
pillar the amount of impact that gender
00:11:03
has on each one of these character
00:11:05
stories is different mau's entire world
00:11:07
and plotline are heavily influenced by
00:11:09
the fact that she was a young woman born
00:11:11
into her Society fan on the other hand
00:11:13
is a fantasy world built with almost no
00:11:15
implicit bias but while gender plays a
00:11:17
different role in each story's plot it's
00:11:19
well factored into all four of these
00:11:21
protagonist character writing all of
00:11:22
these characters have been praised
00:11:24
numerous times online by many different
00:11:26
creators take for example this great
00:11:27
anime YouTuber named inoc who talks
00:11:29
about this subject a lot
00:11:31
enaku enaku I've seen a couple of her
00:11:34
videos breaking down female characters
00:11:36
in the anime and enjoyed each one even
00:11:38
about a month ago she beat me to this
00:11:40
kind of premise for a video literally
00:11:42
comparing female protagonists in furin
00:11:44
and Mau I've been sitting on this video
00:11:45
idea for a couple months but it was
00:11:47
really cool to see someone else land in
00:11:48
literally the exact same spot it was
00:11:50
also interesting how we explored the
00:11:51
idea in such different ways it's a good
00:11:53
video If you like this topic at all you
00:11:55
should check it out I'll put a link in
00:11:56
the description but the point I'm trying
00:11:58
to make is that both her her and I love
00:12:00
these characters and I think that's
00:12:01
representative of their quality I feel
00:12:03
very grateful that I have the
00:12:05
opportunity to watch and analyze media
00:12:07
the fact that I can put together videos
00:12:09
and make a career from it is really cool
00:12:11
but that's only possible because I'm
00:12:12
attaching myself onto fantastic pieces
00:12:14
of art part of the reason I chose to
00:12:17
make video essays about anime is because
00:12:19
the opportunity to talk about things
00:12:20
felt endless there are so many good
00:12:22
shows and characters things to explore
00:12:25
and standing right in the Forefront of
00:12:27
every story we consume
00:12:29
are protagonists I feel like we're
00:12:31
getting such a wide range of characters
00:12:34
and stories anime is not cheap to create
00:12:36
it takes tons of time effort and energy
00:12:39
so naturally Things fall through the
00:12:40
cracks that's part of the process but it
00:12:42
feels like the average quality of shows
00:12:44
being released lately is just constantly
00:12:46
Rising it's really cool that characters
00:12:48
so well written like these are starting
00:12:50
to become more the norm than the
00:12:52
exception and I can't imagine I'm the
00:12:54
only one noticing it so cheers to all
00:12:56
the well-written characters out there
00:12:58
especially while written female
00:13:00
protagonists
