- 00:00:00today we're going to build this router
- 00:00:02table all you need is one board from
- 00:00:04your local Box Store a little bit of
- 00:00:05melamine and some scrap plywood to make
- 00:00:07it possible it holds a small trim router
- 00:00:10I've got a DeWalt here but you can make
- 00:00:11it fit whatever router you have access
- 00:00:13to and then it's great for edge profiles
- 00:00:16grooves plows any small projects you've
- 00:00:18got going on it's great for beginners
- 00:00:21and you can store it pretty much
- 00:00:23anywhere in your shop let's get started
- 00:00:26[Music]
- 00:00:29after the end cap and stretcher pieces
- 00:00:31are all milled and cut to size I'm going
- 00:00:34to start laying out for the screws to
- 00:00:36attach the base together
- 00:00:37so I just stack the parts on top of one
- 00:00:42another making sure that the stretchers
- 00:00:44are flush with the top and bottom of the
- 00:00:46end caps and I'll just use a pencil to
- 00:00:49Mark where those end caps fall on the
- 00:00:51stretchers so that I can take this apart
- 00:00:54and drill countersinks and clearance
- 00:00:56holes to attach
- 00:00:59I'll use a square just to find the
- 00:01:01center of each of those sections and lay
- 00:01:04out for two screws in each stretcher
- 00:01:06piece this will reduce the likelihood of
- 00:01:09the whole table racking as you're using
- 00:01:11it
- 00:01:15and then I'll use a clearance hole and
- 00:01:18countersink drill bit and a handheld
- 00:01:20drill and just drill those holes out and
- 00:01:22each of the stretcher pieces
- 00:01:26while I have the stretcher pieces out I
- 00:01:29also lay out for the counter bore and
- 00:01:32clearance holes that I will use to
- 00:01:34attach the table top once the base is
- 00:01:36all assembled so I'll put four screws
- 00:01:39from underneath
- 00:01:41through the top stretchers into the
- 00:01:43table top to hold it nice and secure the
- 00:01:46layout isn't hyper critical I just want
- 00:01:48to make sure that there's enough screws
- 00:01:49to hold it nice and snug
- 00:01:52so I'll use a forstner bit
- 00:01:55to drill the counter bores and flag that
- 00:01:57bit so that I do not drill so far that
- 00:02:01the screws pop through the table top
- 00:02:02when I assemble the whole thing together
- 00:02:08I'll stack the pieces again and use that
- 00:02:11same drill bit or an awl to Mark where I
- 00:02:16want to drill pilot holes into the end
- 00:02:19caps so that when I attach it with
- 00:02:20screws it pulls in nice and straight you
- 00:02:23will notice
- 00:02:24that I have labeled the stretchers and
- 00:02:27the end caps with letters and that is
- 00:02:30just in case I
- 00:02:32didn't drill the holes perfectly my
- 00:02:35pilot holes will match up with my
- 00:02:36clearance holes and everything
- 00:02:37corresponds nicely knowing that they're
- 00:02:39labeled the same
- 00:02:42and then I'll just drive the screws home
- 00:02:43making sure that each of the stretchers
- 00:02:46is flush with the top and the bottom of
- 00:02:49the end cap so that the table top sits
- 00:02:52nice and flat on the top surface and the
- 00:02:55bottom
- 00:02:56sits nice and flat on your workbench as
- 00:02:59you're using it
- 00:03:00so I'll drive the screws almost all the
- 00:03:02way home
- 00:03:03make any little adjustments I need to
- 00:03:05make sure everything is nice and flush
- 00:03:06and then drive the screws the rest of
- 00:03:08the way home
- 00:03:10[Music]
- 00:03:14the base is pretty much done so we'll
- 00:03:16move on to the table top with three
- 00:03:18quarter inch melamine
- 00:03:20and I'll use the router base itself to
- 00:03:22Mark where I'm going to drill the
- 00:03:25counter bore and clearance holes to
- 00:03:26attach the router base so that way I
- 00:03:28know the holes will be right where I
- 00:03:30need them to be
- 00:03:33the counter bores are going to be on the
- 00:03:35top surface of the router table since
- 00:03:38we're attaching the base from underneath
- 00:03:39so I only make the hole as deep as it
- 00:03:42needs to be to put the screw head below
- 00:03:45the surface I don't like making them too
- 00:03:47deep because then they just collect dust
- 00:03:50and little pieces of wood as you're
- 00:03:51actually using their router table
- 00:03:56and then using the center point of those
- 00:03:59counter bores I will use that to
- 00:04:02register the clearance hole
- 00:04:04and drill all the way through the table
- 00:04:05surface
- 00:04:11now I want to tend to the disc inserts
- 00:04:14that I use
- 00:04:16to correspond to the router bits that
- 00:04:18I'm using at any given point
- 00:04:21I know a fly cutter in a drill press is
- 00:04:24not everyone's favorite so there are
- 00:04:25many ways that you can do this you can
- 00:04:27use a hole saw you can lay it out and
- 00:04:30then cut it at the bandsaw and then
- 00:04:32shape it to fit however you are
- 00:04:34comfortable making these circles I
- 00:04:36usually make
- 00:04:37four or five of them with different
- 00:04:41sized clearance holes through the middle
- 00:04:43to accept different router bit sizes
- 00:04:46and to cut those clearance holes for the
- 00:04:51router bits I will hold these little
- 00:04:52discs in a wood hand screw clamp so that
- 00:04:55my fingers aren't close to the drill bit
- 00:04:57and use a variety of different diameter
- 00:05:00forstner bits to drill through the
- 00:05:02inserts so that I can fit all sorts of
- 00:05:05router bits with as little clearance
- 00:05:08around the router bit itself as possible
- 00:05:11now before I go drilling into my router
- 00:05:13table's actual tabletop I'll use some of
- 00:05:16the scrap melamine of the same thickness
- 00:05:18to test the depth of the hole I'm going
- 00:05:23to drill to accept those inserts so I
- 00:05:25need the depth to be precise so that the
- 00:05:28insert sits flush with the table surface
- 00:05:31and doesn't impede your ability to run
- 00:05:33your work piece over the router itself
- 00:05:37finicky about this until you dial it in
- 00:05:40just right because once you drill into
- 00:05:42your actual router tabletop you've
- 00:05:44committed
- 00:05:47once I'm happy with the depth I will
- 00:05:49drill into the table top
- 00:05:52be careful not to pull too hard on
- 00:05:55the drill press handle because it can go
- 00:05:58a Touch Too Deep
- 00:05:59I do know that from experience
- 00:06:05and once you have that relief cut then
- 00:06:07you will drill all the way through the
- 00:06:10table top
- 00:06:11the same diameter as your biggest router
- 00:06:14bit and I know that's subjective when
- 00:06:17I'm using a trim router or a palm router
- 00:06:19I don't use enormous bits so the
- 00:06:23forstner bit size I chose for this hole
- 00:06:25is just as big as my largest round over
- 00:06:28and this hole will go all the way
- 00:06:30through the tabletop
- 00:06:34next I'm going to start preparing for
- 00:06:36the fence
- 00:06:38so I'm going to attach the fence of this
- 00:06:40router table with the micro jig match
- 00:06:44fit accessories
- 00:06:46and those require a dovetail slot so
- 00:06:49first I used a quarter inch straight
- 00:06:51cutting router bit in my plunge router
- 00:06:53with a straight cutting guide and I just
- 00:06:56cut a slot about four or five inches
- 00:06:59long from the back edge of the router
- 00:07:02table
- 00:07:04and then I swap that bit out for the
- 00:07:07corresponding dovetail bit to fit those
- 00:07:09match fit accessories
- 00:07:13make sure that when you finish the
- 00:07:15dovetail slot you turn the router off
- 00:07:17and let the bit come to a stop do not
- 00:07:19let the router pull up at the end of
- 00:07:21that cut or you'll be left with a big
- 00:07:23giant hole
- 00:07:25and then I will do the same to the
- 00:07:28opposite
- 00:07:30Edge
- 00:07:35and before I attach the table top I'll
- 00:07:37throw a big round over around all the
- 00:07:40edges top and bottom and that is to
- 00:07:43avoid any of those nasty melamine
- 00:07:45splinters or cuts on your hands later
- 00:07:48[Music]
- 00:07:50foreign
- 00:07:51and then I'll Center the base onto the
- 00:07:55table top and attach with screws
- 00:08:00I'll remove the plate on the bottom of
- 00:08:02my trim router and use those same screws
- 00:08:05to attach the router base to the table
- 00:08:07top
- 00:08:08so dropping those little screws through
- 00:08:10my counter bores and removing the base
- 00:08:13plate
- 00:08:15I can attach the screws from the top
- 00:08:18with the router base on the bottom
- 00:08:22and then I can slip the motor into the
- 00:08:25base and lock it into place
- 00:08:27and Slide the
- 00:08:29power cord out the back
- 00:08:32so it's out of the way
- 00:08:36now we're going to tend to be fence I
- 00:08:39laminate two three quarter inch pieces
- 00:08:42of plywood together and then use the
- 00:08:44router table that I just made with a
- 00:08:46pattern copying bit and establish a
- 00:08:50straight edge along the bottom of the
- 00:08:52fence
- 00:08:55after the two sides
- 00:08:58are ripped parallel I'm going to cross
- 00:09:00cut three sections out of this length
- 00:09:03the two longer sections that I cross cut
- 00:09:07out of this lamination will serve as the
- 00:09:10front sections
- 00:09:11of the fence
- 00:09:14and the smaller section will serve as
- 00:09:16the back section of the fence that will
- 00:09:18also accept your dust collection hose
- 00:09:23make sure you never cross cut against
- 00:09:25the fence
- 00:09:28using a forstner bit I will drill a hole
- 00:09:30through that small section that is the
- 00:09:32same diameter as the hose of my shop vac
- 00:09:35and then I will carefully attach that
- 00:09:38small piece overlapping the two front
- 00:09:40pieces
- 00:09:43I prepared these cleats to accept the
- 00:09:46micro jig match fit dovetail accessories
- 00:10:00and then I will slide the whole thing
- 00:10:02into place
- 00:10:05making sure the whole fence and cleats
- 00:10:08are nice and flat against the surface
- 00:10:10attaching the knobs
- 00:10:14and then checking the fence for square
- 00:10:17perfect
- 00:10:21and then we're gonna give it a go so
- 00:10:24putting a profile bit in there
- 00:10:26[Music]
- 00:10:31works like a dream
- 00:10:35[Music]
- 00:10:51and just like that we finished our one
- 00:10:53day router table project perfect for any
- 00:10:56affordable trim router I'm good for
- 00:10:58small routing projects and all you need
- 00:11:01is one board from your local Box Store
- 00:11:06please
