  • 00:00:00
Hi I’m Jared Hillam, I’ve been in the Business Intelligence space
  • 00:00:03
for over 10 years now, but I still find it hard to carry on small talk with the average
  • 00:00:08
Joe about what exactly I do for work.
  • 00:00:11
So for all the Joe’s out there that really want to know what Business Intelligence is,
  • 00:00:15
    you’ve found the right video.
  • 00:00:17
First I want you to imagine that you went to your favorite store to buy some stinky
  • 00:00:21
    cheese.
  • 00:00:23
When you pay for your cheese and walk out, you may or may not know that your favorite
  • 00:00:26
store has gathered some new data about the stinky cheese you bought, at what time you
  • 00:00:30
bought it, and how much you bought it for.
  • 00:00:33
Now I want you to put yourself in the shoes of the Director of Stinky Cheese Supply for
  • 00:00:37
    your favorite Store.
  • 00:00:39
Day in and day out He has to figure out how many blocks of stinky cheese He should be
  • 00:00:43
    ordering.
  • 00:00:45
The only possible way for him to make an educated guess about this, is if He knows how many
  • 00:00:50
    are being purchased by customers.
  • 00:00:52
Now, as the data sits today, the Director of Stinky Cheese would have to look at every
  • 00:00:57
single transaction made throughout each day to see how much stinky cheese was purchased.
  • 00:01:02
But this takes up way too much time, and since this is a decision the Director of Stinky
  • 00:01:07
Cheese has to make every week, He decides to use a Business Intelligence tool to provide
  • 00:01:12
    that information.
  • 00:01:14
The use of a Business Intelligence tool allows for information to be regularly rolled up
  • 00:01:18
and formatted just right so the Director can make a much more educated decision about how
  • 00:01:23
    much stinky cheese to purchase.
  • 00:01:25
Additionally, now that the Director has more time on his hands He can analyze in much further
  • 00:01:30
    detail.
  • 00:01:31
So basically you can think of Business Intelligence as the process of going from raw data to legible
  • 00:01:37
    information.
  • 00:01:39
Now consider how broad the Business Intelligence space is.
  • 00:01:42
For Example, Have you ever received a receipt from an ATM machine that provides you a current
  • 00:01:46
    balance in your bank account?
  • 00:01:48
Or perhaps have you ever received a detailed bill in the mail?
  • 00:01:52
These are all forms of Business Intelligence (or BI).
  • 00:01:55
Let’s take some time and go over some common forms of BI:
  • 00:01:59
First, let’s talk about Operational Reporting.
  • 00:02:03
This form of reporting is a kin to the detailed bill in the mail or your ATM receipt.
  • 00:02:07
It provides a very structured template of how the data is to be delivered to the end
  • 00:02:11
    user.
  • 00:02:12
The end users experience needs to be considered in a lot more detail as the path of analysis
  • 00:02:17
and how the person will consume the data are typically nested in the report templates.
  • 00:02:23
Second, we have Ad Hoc reporting.
  • 00:02:26
This type of reporting is intended to empower a business person to play the report authoring
  • 00:02:30
    role.
  • 00:02:32
By doing this, the look, feel, and content of the report can be controlled by its consumer.
  • 00:02:38
Most Ad Hoc tools have built in assumptions regarding design and navigation, to keep the
  • 00:02:42
business person from getting overwhelmed with complexity.
  • 00:02:46
The queries and their structures are maintained by IT and are developed jointly with business
  • 00:02:51
    user inputs.
  • 00:02:53
    Third, we have OLAP Analysis.
  • 00:02:55
This type of analysis delivers pre calculated and pre structured data sets for business
  • 00:03:00
    people to explore.
  • 00:03:02
Many tools that connect to OLAP feel more like data navigation tools than pure report
  • 00:03:07
    authoring tools.
  • 00:03:08
I’ve released a much more comprehensive video about OLAP, on the Intricity101 channel,
  • 00:03:13
which is titled “What is OLAP”.
  • 00:03:15
    Fourth, we have Data Visualization.
  • 00:03:18
This is a category that has recently emerged in popularity, and covers a realm in BI which
  • 00:03:24
    I like to call microdecisions.
  • 00:03:25
In Data Visualization the roll up of data is commonly conducted algorithmically and
  • 00:03:31
    stored in memory.
  • 00:03:32
This makes the experience of BI far more plug and play in nature.
  • 00:03:35
And, it also allows the business to answer one off questions in a much simpler way.
  • 00:03:42
Because the roll up of the data commonly occurs automatically, it also tends to be very processor
  • 00:03:47
    and query intensive.
  • 00:03:48
    Fifth, we have Dashboards.
  • 00:03:50
As you’d expect, Dashboards typically represent a high level view of an organization.
  • 00:03:56
This keeps the executive from having to thumb through hundreds of reports and data elements.
  • 00:04:01
If a troubled area arises in the dashboard, the executive can drill into the alert to
  • 00:04:06
    see a more detailed report.
  • 00:04:08
Often dashboards are simply compositions of the various data delivery methods we just
  • 00:04:12
    discussed.
  • 00:04:15
Each of the delivery methods I’ve described above typically come as part of a suite or
  • 00:04:20
platform for managing the various forms of content.
  • 00:04:24
This means everything from scheduling automated report delivery to keeping the data secure
  • 00:04:29
are all conducted in a single platform.
  • 00:04:32
Now I’m sure there are another dozen or so forms of Business Intelligence, this video
  • 00:04:37
isn’t meant to cover every way you could consume data.
  • 00:04:41
But hopefully you can get a sense of some common ways businesses are turning raw data
  • 00:04:45
    into comprehensible information.
  • 00:04:47
However, the Business Intelligence front end is really only the tip of the iceberg.
  • 00:04:52
The real work in delivering consistent information happens behind the scenes in Data Marts, and
  • 00:04:56
    Data Warehouses.
  • 00:04:58
Commonly if a business is unhappy with their Business Intelligence tool, something is usually
  • 00:05:02
wrong in the back end Data Warehouse.
  • 00:05:05
Now that you’ve watched this video I recommend you take a look at my video on Data Warehousing,
  • 00:05:09
just so you have a good understanding of how important that data foundation is.
  • 00:05:14
Intricity has lead the way in Business Intelligence since before the industry had a common name.
