00:00:14
in June 1974 a very very strange thing
00:00:18
happened in Britain Heathrow Airport
00:00:21
then as now the busiest airport in the
00:00:23
UK and one of the most important in the
00:00:25
world was suddenly invaded in a fast
00:00:28
operation for 400 British military
00:00:31
personnel plus police began to isolate
00:00:34
the airport using armored vehicles to
00:00:36
set up checkpoints and roadblocks while
00:00:39
armed soldiers and police began checking
00:00:41
vehicles and drivers
00:00:43
documents the managers of Heathrow had
00:00:46
not been forewarned and soon one of the
00:00:49
world's largest and busiest airports was
00:00:51
basically under military
00:00:54
jurisdiction the official reason given
00:00:56
to the Press was that this was an
00:00:58
anti-terrorist operation the 1970s
00:01:01
suffering badly with terrorist outrages
00:01:04
globally however when news of this
00:01:06
action codenamed operation marmian
00:01:09
reached 10 Downing Street the home of
00:01:11
the British prime minister it caused
00:01:12
considerable alarm in the prime
00:01:14
minister's
00:01:16
office the Prime Minister Harold Wilson
00:01:19
had not been informed of such an
00:01:20
operation Jews to take place this was
00:01:24
unprecedented to Wilson Maron signaled
00:01:27
that his fears which had been growing
00:01:29
forever several years were Justified to
00:01:32
Wilson and others around him it seemed
00:01:34
as though the Army was sending a signal
00:01:36
to Downing Street it was flexing its
00:01:38
power to show how it could if necessary
00:01:41
stage a coup and take
00:01:43
power ludicrous though this statement
00:01:46
may seem to us over 50 years later the
00:01:49
Army's takeover of Heathrow Airport
00:01:51
deeply concerned the government of the
00:01:53
day a government that was becoming very
00:01:55
unpopular in some quarters and the Prime
00:01:57
Minister Harold Wilson suspected at the
00:02:00
time was being intrigued against by a
00:02:03
group of right-wing political
00:02:05
intelligence and military leaders that
00:02:07
were seemingly debating direct action to
00:02:09
remove Wilson and the labor party from
00:02:13
Office the story began dur Wilson's
00:02:16
first period as prime minister in the
00:02:18
1960s in October 1964 Wilson managed to
00:02:22
form a labor government with only a
00:02:24
majority of four
00:02:26
MPS and in March 1966 Wilson decided to
00:02:31
hold a fresh general election hoping
00:02:33
this time to win a larger majority
00:02:36
Wilson was quite a popular figure at the
00:02:38
time very good on television and famous
00:02:40
for his pipe and gx's raincoat his warm
00:02:43
workingclass accent contrasting with the
00:02:46
usual privately educated politicians
00:02:48
that Britain had become accustomed
00:02:50
to Wilson defeated conservative party
00:02:54
leader Edward Heath securing 363 seats
00:02:58
in the House of Commons against two 253
00:03:01
for the conservatives and 12 for the
00:03:03
liberal party but despite having a large
00:03:06
majority the country was in crisis
00:03:08
mostly economic in nature with falling
00:03:11
exports and strike actions the value of
00:03:14
the pound continued to fall and it was
00:03:16
clear that by the end of 1967 there
00:03:18
would be a massive trade deficit with an
00:03:21
increasing drain of Britain's gold
00:03:23
reserves in November 1967 Wilson
00:03:26
devalued the pound from $280 to2
00:03:31
$40 through 1968 Wilson cut government
00:03:35
spending by 750 million and raised
00:03:39
tariffs on cigarettes alcohol and petrol
00:03:42
and at the same time the trades unions
00:03:44
demanded wage increases with significant
00:03:47
strike action amongst Dockers and car
00:03:50
workers Wilson failing to reform the
00:03:52
unions unemployment continued to rise
00:03:56
and key Industries such as coal mining
00:03:58
ship building Tex styes and Railways
00:04:01
continue to contract the gravity of the
00:04:04
situation faced by the country caused
00:04:06
some elements to look to a solution
00:04:08
outside of the usual Democratic Avenues
00:04:12
on the 8th of May 1968 the secret
00:04:14
meeting took place in London it was
00:04:17
arranged on the request of cesil King
00:04:19
chairman of Daily Mirror newspapers and
00:04:22
the international publishing Corporation
00:04:24
and a director of the bank of England
00:04:26
King also had a very good relationship
00:04:29
with the the British intelligence
00:04:30
Services MI5 and 6 and with the CIA in
00:04:35
America at the meeting also were Hugh
00:04:37
cudlip a chairman of the international
00:04:40
publishing group and the other two men
00:04:42
present were sir suly zakan the British
00:04:45
government's Chief scientific adviser an
00:04:48
admiral of the fleet the first Earl
00:04:50
Mount baton of Burma a World War II hero
00:04:52
who had been Supreme Allied Commander
00:04:54
southeast Asia and the last vicroy of
00:04:57
India and from 1959 to 65 chief of the
00:05:01
defense staff and he had also been first
00:05:04
sealord the head of the royal
00:05:06
Navy great uncle and mentor to the then
00:05:10
Prince Charles King outlined his views
00:05:13
on the situation facing the country
00:05:16
under Wilson's labor government and
00:05:17
Wilson's shortcomings as prime minister
00:05:20
MI5 the British Security Service had
00:05:23
maintained a file on Wilson for decades
00:05:26
under the code name Henry Worthington
00:05:28
and indeed in 196 4 shortly before
00:05:31
Wilson had won the election James
00:05:33
Angleton head of Counter Intelligence at
00:05:35
CIA had told MI5 that according to
00:05:39
information he had received Harold
00:05:41
Wilson was a KGB agent Angleton asked
00:05:45
MI5 to keep the allegations out of
00:05:48
political circles which it did MI5 also
00:05:52
received further information from two
00:05:54
czechoslovak defectors alleging that the
00:05:56
labor party had been infiltrated by
00:05:59
Soviet intelligence providing a list of
00:06:01
Labor MPS and trade unionists who were
00:06:04
allegedly Soviet
00:06:06
agents this information may have been
00:06:09
leaked to certain figures on the right
00:06:11
in Britain including newspaper
00:06:13
Proprietors and we know for example that
00:06:15
King had strong links to both British
00:06:17
and US
00:06:19
intelligence at the London meeting in
00:06:21
May 1968 King said that he foresaw a
00:06:24
crisis just around the corner Wilson's
00:06:28
government would disintegrate there
00:06:29
would be Bloodshed in the streets and
00:06:31
the armed forces would be
00:06:33
involved King said the people would look
00:06:36
to someone like Lord mount baton a
00:06:38
respected national hero and propos that
00:06:41
mount baton should become the temporary
00:06:43
leader of a new Administration to take
00:06:46
charge of the country to restore order
00:06:48
and public confidence backed by other
00:06:50
intelligent and capable men King then
00:06:54
asked Mount baton if he would agree to
00:06:56
become that leader of a new
00:06:57
Administration under such circumstances
00:07:00
Mount baton asked zakan for his advice
00:07:04
zakan said the plan amounted to treason
00:07:06
and he left the meeting Mount baton also
00:07:09
agreed that it was treason and departed
00:07:12
cesil King then took the interesting
00:07:15
step of overriding the editorial
00:07:17
Independence of the Daily Mirror
00:07:19
instructing the paper to publish a front
00:07:21
page article he had written that
00:07:23
demanded Wilson be removed through some
00:07:25
sort of extra parliamentary action the
00:07:29
board of the international publishing
00:07:30
corporation which owned the Daily Mirror
00:07:33
met and demanded King's resignation he
00:07:35
refused and he was dismissed by the
00:07:37
board on the 30th of May
00:07:40
1968 interestingly King did have some
00:07:43
support including from the Times
00:07:45
newspaper its editor William Reese MOG
00:07:48
calling for a coalition governance of
00:07:50
Britain on the 8th of December 1968 in
00:07:53
an article titled the danger to Britain
00:07:56
Lord mount batton's part in any putative
00:07:59
plot appears to have been deeper than
00:08:01
let on by many books and
00:08:03
newspapers the meeting was held in Mount
00:08:06
batton's London residence in
00:08:08
Belgravia though Mount baton reportedly
00:08:11
backed away from involvement in a coup
00:08:13
researched by my literary agent the
00:08:15
renowned biographer Andrew Looney
00:08:17
suggest that the queen was aware of the
00:08:19
coup plot and Man batton's part in it
00:08:22
the queen was reportedly quote
00:08:24
desperately worried over the whole
00:08:26
situation and denounced the coup as
00:08:28
quote rank treachery she basically
00:08:31
talked Mount baton out of any further
00:08:34
involvement the threat posed to the
00:08:36
British Monarchy by such a plot was
00:08:39
obvious if such an undemocratic thing
00:08:42
were to occur in Britain headed by a
00:08:44
member of the royal family it could have
00:08:46
precipitated a constitutional crisis and
00:08:48
the queen of course knew this man baton
00:08:52
was the mentor and great uncle of the
00:08:54
Future King Charles the monarchy itself
00:08:57
could have been brought down by such
00:08:58
Association
00:09:01
if a plot existed it seems to have been
00:09:04
according to several authors and
00:09:05
journalists and Intelligence Officers
00:09:08
lodged within MI5
00:09:10
itself Harold Wilson had become leader
00:09:13
of the labor party in 1963 following the
00:09:16
unexpected and sudden death of leader
00:09:18
Hugh Gates skull in the controversial
00:09:21
book spycatcher published in 1987 and
00:09:24
initially banned under Thatcher's regime
00:09:27
in the UK the former deputy head of MI5
00:09:30
Peter Wright recalled that Gates
00:09:32
school's doctor had contacted MI5
00:09:34
shortly after Gates school's death
00:09:36
reporting the death as
00:09:38
suspicious the head of Soviet Counter
00:09:41
Intelligence at MI5 had interviewed the
00:09:43
Doctor Who told him that Gates skull had
00:09:46
died from a disease called lupus
00:09:48
disseminata which attacks the body's
00:09:50
organs it was rare in temporate climates
00:09:54
like Britain's and there was no evidence
00:09:56
that Gates school had been anywhere
00:09:57
where he could have caught such a dis
00:09:59
Seas MI5 sent Peter Wright to talk to
00:10:03
the chief doctor at Porton down
00:10:05
Britain's top secret chemical and
00:10:07
biological warfare establishment the
00:10:10
doctor stated that he and his staff had
00:10:12
absolutely no idea how Gat school could
00:10:14
have contracted the disease MI5 already
00:10:18
suspicious of Harold Wilson's loyalties
00:10:21
hence their file on him suspected that
00:10:23
Gates skull might have been assassinated
00:10:25
by the KGB to ensure that Wilson became
00:10:27
labor party leader and led the party
00:10:30
into a general election with a good
00:10:31
chance he would become Prime Minister
00:10:34
Wilson had visited the USSR multiple
00:10:37
times when he worked for an East West
00:10:39
trading organization and Mii feared that
00:10:41
he had been compromised in some way by
00:10:44
the KGB to work for Soviet interests it
00:10:47
would not have been the first time that
00:10:49
the KGB had entrapped or framed Western
00:10:52
visitors to the USSR Wilson also
00:10:55
maintains several friendships with
00:10:57
Eastern European igra business men some
00:11:00
of whom were also being watched
00:11:01
intensely by
00:11:03
MI5 the 1968 plot involving Lord mount
00:11:07
baton and others appear to have gone no
00:11:10
further but in fact plotting continued
00:11:12
at a very high level notably it appears
00:11:14
within MI5 itself with Harold Wilson
00:11:18
returned to office as prime minister in
00:11:20
1974 following a general election and as
00:11:23
Peter Wright noted in his book
00:11:25
spycatcher quote as events moved to
00:11:28
their political climax in early 1974
00:11:31
with the election of a minority labor
00:11:33
government MI5 was sitting on
00:11:35
information which if leaked would
00:11:37
undoubtedly have caused a political
00:11:39
Scandal of incalculable
00:11:41
consequences the news that the Prime
00:11:43
Minister himself was being investigated
00:11:45
would at the least have led to his
00:11:48
resignation the point was not lost on
00:11:50
some MI5 officers end quote Wright noted
00:11:55
that some of his colleagues held a very
00:11:57
dim view of Wilson he quot quotes one of
00:11:59
the younger officers saying to him in
00:12:02
1974 Wilson's a bloody Menace and it's
00:12:05
about time the public knew the truth end
00:12:08
quote Wright states that some MI5
00:12:11
officers did leak details of the
00:12:13
intelligence gathered on leading labor
00:12:16
party figures including Wilson to
00:12:18
sympathetic persons some 30 MI5 officers
00:12:22
were known to have approved of this
00:12:24
scheme the June 1974 sudden takeover by
00:12:28
elements of the British army of Heathrow
00:12:30
Airport cause Wilson genuine alarm was
00:12:34
it a warning shot against the Prime
00:12:36
Minister letting him know that if it
00:12:38
chose the military was more than capable
00:12:40
of taking control of the country further
00:12:44
Evidence has emerged that senior retired
00:12:46
military leaders were involved in
00:12:48
creating private militia type groups in
00:12:50
the UK to assist in a domestic matters
00:12:53
should the need arise effectively
00:12:55
private
00:12:57
armies General s Walter Walker who had
00:13:00
proved extremely successful in Britain's
00:13:02
campaign against communist terrorists in
00:13:04
Malaya and until 1972 was commander-in
00:13:08
Chief Allied Forces northern Europe
00:13:10
argued publicly that there was a quote
00:13:12
communist trojan horse in our midst with
00:13:15
its fellow Travelers wriggling their
00:13:17
maggoty way inside its belly end
00:13:20
quote another outspoken opponent of
00:13:23
Wilson was David Sterling the legendary
00:13:25
founder of the SAS in World War II
00:13:28
Sterling said the the left had quote a
00:13:30
stead encroachment on the public
00:13:32
enterprise system together with the
00:13:34
forcing of Trade union members onto the
00:13:36
executive Boards of companies and was a
00:13:39
realizable threat of a magnitude this
00:13:41
country has never faced before end
00:13:44
quote Sterling also argued for a
00:13:47
volunteer organization to be in place in
00:13:50
case of a
00:13:51
crisis another man urging for some
00:13:54
direct intervention in political Affairs
00:13:57
was Brian croia a journal IST and a
00:13:59
senior staff member of the secretive
00:14:02
information research Department part of
00:14:04
the British foreign office during the
00:14:06
Cold War a propaganda Department croia
00:14:10
gave talks to serving army officers
00:14:12
discussing the benefits of military
00:14:15
coups Allied to the plotting and
00:14:17
operation Maron the heo airport takeover
00:14:21
which incidentally was repeated again in
00:14:23
July and September 1974 again under the
00:14:27
cover of anti-terrorist operations there
00:14:30
was Operation Clockwork Orange named for
00:14:33
the Stanley kubric film which occurred
00:14:35
from 1973
00:14:37
onwards Northern Ireland at this time
00:14:40
was a top political topic the province
00:14:43
in a state of Civil War from 1969
00:14:46
between the IRA on the one side and the
00:14:48
loyalist paramilitaries on the other
00:14:50
with the British army stuck in between
00:14:52
trying to keep the peace many felt that
00:14:55
Harold Wilson was not handling Northern
00:14:57
Ireland properly particularly many
00:14:59
serving and former army officers and
00:15:01
Intelligence Officers believe Britain
00:15:03
should be acting with a heavier hand
00:15:05
against the IRA and
00:15:07
others in secret right-wing members of
00:15:10
the security services launched a
00:15:12
disinformation campaign at British MPS
00:15:15
and journalists the Clockwork Orange
00:15:18
group possibly included a unit of SAS
00:15:22
made up of specially trained Northern
00:15:23
Ireland
00:15:25
Personnel journalists from foreign news
00:15:27
organizations would be given briefings
00:15:29
and shown forged documents that
00:15:31
purported to show that certain labor MPS
00:15:34
were speaking at Irish Republican
00:15:35
rallies or were receiving secret
00:15:37
deposits in Swiss bank accounts it was a
00:15:40
smear campaign or what is called black
00:15:43
propaganda and it continued until 1975
00:15:46
throughout the period when operation
00:15:48
Maron was launched three times by the
00:15:50
Army within England now of course
00:15:52
ordinary soldiers taking part in these
00:15:55
operations against heo airport genuinely
00:15:57
thought they were taking part in
00:15:59
anti-terrorist drills as did the police
00:16:01
but of course at the most senior level
00:16:03
there must have been orders coming from
00:16:05
the plotters
00:16:07
themselves operations Marian and
00:16:09
Clockwork Orange made Wilson fearful
00:16:12
that he was being targeted for a
00:16:14
military coup later he would tell
00:16:17
journalists that an element within MI5
00:16:20
was behind the coup and had work to
00:16:22
force his
00:16:23
resignation Wilson spoke of two military
00:16:26
coups plotted against him one in the
00:16:28
late late 1960s and the other in the mid
00:16:31
1970s and as we have seen it seems to be
00:16:34
so and then Wilson was
00:16:37
gone his second term in office had been
00:16:40
a mixed bag economically in 1974 the top
00:16:44
rate of income tax was
00:16:46
83% in 1975 unemployment continued to
00:16:50
rise passing 1 million in April there
00:16:53
was a global recession and stagflation
00:16:56
caused by the 1973 oil crisis Wilson did
00:16:59
manage to help ward off some of the
00:17:02
worst of this by increasing pensions and
00:17:04
introducing rent and price controls and
00:17:07
also transport
00:17:09
subsidies regarding Northern Ireland he
00:17:12
secretly offered Libya's dictator
00:17:14
Colonel Gaddafi £14 million of taxpayers
00:17:17
money to stop supplying arms to the IRA
00:17:20
but Gaddafi demanded more this didn't
00:17:24
become public until
00:17:26
2009 on the 16th of March 19 76 Wilson
00:17:30
announced that he would resign as prime
00:17:32
minister effective on the 5th of April
00:17:34
he was 60 years old and claimed he was
00:17:36
exhausted both physically and mentally
00:17:39
many have argued that the secret
00:17:41
scheming against him and rumors of coup
00:17:44
plots were the real reason for his going
00:17:46
so dramatically and
00:17:48
suddenly he was replaced as prime
00:17:50
minister by James Callahan whose
00:17:52
government would struggle on until 1979
00:17:55
with the election of Margaret Thatcher
00:17:58
the period of Labor government under
00:18:00
Callahan was marked by further economic
00:18:02
problems leading to the famous winter of
00:18:05
discontent bodies being unburied rubbish
00:18:08
piled up in the streets and endless
00:18:11
industrial action by the
00:18:13
unions however it is interesting to note
00:18:15
that Margaret Thatcher became leader of
00:18:17
the conservative party in
00:18:20
1975 her policies aligning very much
00:18:23
with the coup plotters and the general
00:18:25
Outlook of the center right and
00:18:27
traditional elements of British
00:18:29
political and Military
00:18:31
Society it looked as though these groups
00:18:33
would get what they wanted without
00:18:35
having to revert to staging a military
00:18:37
coup to remove a sitting prime minister
00:18:39
and indeed Thatcher won a landslide
00:18:41
victory in 1979 and would rule for the
00:18:44
next 11 years as for Harold Wilson he
00:18:48
died from cancer and Alzheimer's disease
00:18:50
in May 1995 at the age of
00:18:54
79 many thanks for watching please
