The program director follows with a more technical overview, explaining the differences between analytics and data science, clarifying how each discipline intersects within USC. They discuss the importance of business acumen in analytics and how students are prepared to enter various industries upon graduation with strong employment rates noted among alumni.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
The discussion continues with detailed information on the core curriculum that includes foundational and specialized classes focusing on analytics. The presentations also reflect on enhancing students' practical experiences through a comprehensive alumni network and events aimed at fostering professional growth as well as social connections within the community.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
The admissions team then shifts to introduce student ambassadors who share their personal experiences at USC. They discuss the transition into the program, coursework demands, and favorite classes while answering questions from potential students about campus safety, housing options, and fun activities in Los Angeles to create an engaging student life.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:00
To address the inquiries regarding job placements and internships, student ambassadors share insights about applying for internships, focusing on job searches early on, and the overall importance of taking advantage of internship opportunities to maximize career readiness. I Survived The 5 Deadliest Places On Earth
- 00:00:01um so welcome everybody um I know
- 00:00:04there's people still strolling in but I
- 00:00:06will go ahead and get started um just
- 00:00:08out of respect of everybody's time um so
- 00:00:11we do appreciate you joining i know um
- 00:00:14there's maybe six of you maybe some more
- 00:00:16of you strolling in um but I want to
- 00:00:18introduce myself i am Pa i work here um
- 00:00:21in admissions and then I do have um our
- 00:00:24adviserss and then faculty joining us
- 00:00:27here today um later you will see our
- 00:00:30students pop in which are some of our
- 00:00:32student ambassadors um so if anybody has
- 00:00:34any questions you are welcome um to join
- 00:00:38and um just ask them anything you want
- 00:00:40if you want to direct message them or
- 00:00:42just put it in the um uh chat or Q&A so
- 00:00:46the chat will be used primarily to send
- 00:00:48you guys um important links and then if
- 00:00:50you guys can use the Q&A if you do have
- 00:00:52any questions um and then we will go
- 00:00:55from there um so first of all
- 00:00:58congratulations on your admissions uh we
- 00:01:00do want to welcome you to the Trojan
- 00:01:01family um and then I know that a lot of
- 00:01:04you guys have got your decisions um
- 00:01:07recently maybe some a few days ago um
- 00:01:10but we are working on
- 00:01:12those and um we are located in Southern
- 00:01:16California if anybody doesn't know u but
- 00:01:18we are um in the heart of Los Angeles so
- 00:01:21USC it is in the heart of LA um and we
- 00:01:26are very um I want to say diverse and um
- 00:01:30we are a global hub for innovation so um
- 00:01:33if you didn't know or you aren't truly
- 00:01:36aware of Los Angeles or California in
- 00:01:39general um wherever you may be but we do
- 00:01:41have something called Silicon Beach and
- 00:01:43basically um it is our area of you know
- 00:01:47um I guess startups and then also
- 00:01:50definitely like bigger companies where
- 00:01:52there's a lot of opportunities for our
- 00:01:54engineering students um and then USC
- 00:01:56students in general um but definitely
- 00:01:59definitely really close to us um where a
- 00:02:01lot of our students um can just take a
- 00:02:03short bus ride there or um obviously
- 00:02:06drive there um but it is our um global
- 00:02:10hub for
- 00:02:11innovation and Then like I mentioned um
- 00:02:14we are in Los Angeles so there is um
- 00:02:16just short walks um you can take the bus
- 00:02:19um and then you could go further out to
- 00:02:20explore LA if you've never been but some
- 00:02:23short walks that um I will mention is um
- 00:02:26you know we are just across the street
- 00:02:28from the USC village which a lot of
- 00:02:30students hang out with hang out at um we
- 00:02:33do have the California Science Center um
- 00:02:35the shrine so there's a lot a lot of
- 00:02:37things um happening near campus and on
- 00:02:40campus um and then if you um want to get
- 00:02:44out and venture out a bit um you can
- 00:02:47take the bus we do have lines that are
- 00:02:48just right outside of USC um and then
- 00:02:51you can go um you know downtown you can
- 00:02:54go to Chinatown Little Tokyo etc um so
- 00:02:58that's by bus and then obviously if you
- 00:03:00want to venture out further um we do
- 00:03:03have the pier not too far away um Venice
- 00:03:07um Hollywood etc a lot of landmarks that
- 00:03:10you know a lot of students come and see
- 00:03:12um especially if you're not from
- 00:03:15California um and then I want to go
- 00:03:17straight into what we have to offer for
- 00:03:20um our students so we do have a
- 00:03:22mentorship program so the veterary
- 00:03:24graduate mentorship program um is a new
- 00:03:28way for um you know Verbby grad students
- 00:03:31um to start their journey at USC so you
- 00:03:34basically get to meet um new students
- 00:03:37who are paired with our um current
- 00:03:40Burbby grad students and mostly they're
- 00:03:42the same academic department and degree
- 00:03:44level but again give or take we have a
- 00:03:46lot of programs so sometimes there could
- 00:03:48be um you know a different pairup but it
- 00:03:52is a great way to just get started um on
- 00:03:55the right path creating new friends um
- 00:03:57you know just getting yourself into USC
- 00:03:59and immersing in its culture um and it's
- 00:04:02definitely a good way to also expand
- 00:04:04your network especially if you're not
- 00:04:05from here um and maybe you just want to
- 00:04:07figure out like where my friend groups
- 00:04:09my student org groups um etc are this is
- 00:04:12a great way to do
- 00:04:14so um and then like I said there's a lot
- 00:04:17of campus activities um so I definitely
- 00:04:20recommend you um checking these out um
- 00:04:23these are just a few of what we have to
- 00:04:25offer we have of course the tailgate and
- 00:04:28football games um even if you aren't
- 00:04:30into sports I highly recommend that you
- 00:04:32at least attend one for the experience
- 00:04:35um and then we also have stuff like
- 00:04:37hackathons wellness events we do have
- 00:04:39our very own wellness um coach and
- 00:04:42mentor her name is Lorenna um and she is
- 00:04:46um an advocate for everybody's health
- 00:04:48and wellness um that's also a resource
- 00:04:50to you um and then we do have mixers and
- 00:04:53networking events um so graduate student
- 00:04:55clubs um and just depends on what you
- 00:04:58want to get involved in and then
- 00:05:00obviously we have the Vurby Graduate
- 00:05:02Student Association which is also um a
- 00:05:05great way just to one be a part of
- 00:05:07campus and two get to connect with other
- 00:05:09students um these are just a glimpse of
- 00:05:12what we have to offer um but again it's
- 00:05:14up to you to um see what you like see
- 00:05:17what you don't like um and then kind of
- 00:05:19test the waters in what you want to um
- 00:05:22you know get involved with
- 00:05:24um that being said I know that you guys
- 00:05:27are still um either you know deciding
- 00:05:29that USC will be um your commitment
- 00:05:32score or you know still looking into
- 00:05:34things but um I do want to mention that
- 00:05:36the sooner you submit the um statement
- 00:05:38of intent the faster you have access to
- 00:05:41pre-orientation resources so you'll get
- 00:05:44all um resources um as an incoming
- 00:05:46student you can join the Burbby
- 00:05:49mentorship program that I mentioned
- 00:05:50before um and then you connect with your
- 00:05:53departments through academic webinars um
- 00:05:56and then you also get to explore housing
- 00:05:58options again depends on where you are
- 00:06:00where you're coming from and then um for
- 00:06:04specifically international students you
- 00:06:06request your I20 and initiate the visa
- 00:06:09process um just keep in mind that that
- 00:06:11could be a lengthy process so the faster
- 00:06:13that you submit your statement of intent
- 00:06:16the faster you get this uh you know
- 00:06:18paperwork/process going um and it'll
- 00:06:21help you just um join USC a little
- 00:06:25quicker and then um speaking of the
- 00:06:28statement of intent we want you to check
- 00:06:31um your uh statement of intent uh to
- 00:06:34verify what the last day you can submit
- 00:06:37is so most of them will have a
- 00:06:39commitment deadline of April 15 um but
- 00:06:41again it is your responsibility to check
- 00:06:44on that and obviously um you are still
- 00:06:46deciding and you know have time to um
- 00:06:49figure things out but definitely keep
- 00:06:51that in mind and then um we do want to
- 00:06:54encourage you um to submit any financial
- 00:06:56documents um this is especially for
- 00:06:59international students who need um an
- 00:07:02I20 process um and you can scan that QR
- 00:07:05code if you want to learn a little bit
- 00:07:06more about that um but I will say that
- 00:07:09financial documents will be required to
- 00:07:11be submitted um using the Trojan
- 00:07:13international system that is the portal
- 00:07:16where you submit all your documents to
- 00:07:18get processed um please do not email
- 00:07:20them to us um we do not handle this
- 00:07:23directly there is a separate system for
- 00:07:25this um and again it's easier for you
- 00:07:27just to go through the system and then
- 00:07:29um get processed
- 00:07:31quicker
- 00:07:33and that being said um the other thing I
- 00:07:36do want to encourage you again wherever
- 00:07:38you may be in your um cycle deciding
- 00:07:42still exploring waiting on some schools
- 00:07:44we totally understand but I do highly
- 00:07:46encourage you to chat with a student
- 00:07:48ambassador so you can connect directly
- 00:07:50with our graduate student ambassadors i
- 00:07:52have more than 25 current students um
- 00:07:55from diverse backgrounds and you know
- 00:07:57across engineering disciplines that can
- 00:08:00share their experiences and answer your
- 00:08:02questions they are available
- 00:08:04247 so if you want to go ahead and chat
- 00:08:07with them um there is a QR code they
- 00:08:09also have an Instagram where you can
- 00:08:11reach out um but basically they will
- 00:08:14help you um with any questions that you
- 00:08:16may have again a lot of our students are
- 00:08:18international students everybody has a
- 00:08:20different story um and they are willing
- 00:08:22to share that with you and you know give
- 00:08:25the give you any tips or tricks that you
- 00:08:27may um need you know maybe just
- 00:08:29transitioning into USC um wherever you
- 00:08:32may be are it could be a little bit
- 00:08:34difficult for you to come to USC um and
- 00:08:37they all understand that some of them
- 00:08:39have been there um so yeah definitely
- 00:08:41definitely encourage you to um message
- 00:08:44them um they can also take you on a
- 00:08:46campus tour if you wish all you have to
- 00:08:48do is chat with them and ask them and
- 00:08:51they are more than um happy to help you
- 00:08:54with
- 00:08:55that um and then part of our um you know
- 00:09:00just resource here is for you to um be
- 00:09:04able to contact us um if you do have any
- 00:09:07questions throughout this process um

- 00:11:57to join us so yeah we're really great uh
- 00:12:00really happy to have you here and hope
- 00:12:02you will enjoy our presentation
- 00:12:08okay I guess it's back to me here as I
- 00:12:10got just a few quick slides trying to
- 00:12:11give you a big picture overview of the
- 00:12:13program i want to start with um the
- 00:12:15industrial and systems engineering
- 00:12:17department is a department within the
- 00:12:18Veter School of Engineering here at USC
- 00:12:21some of you may may be less familiar
- 00:12:23with industrial and systems engineering
- 00:12:25than others it's a it's not every school
- 00:12:27not every school has such a department
- 00:12:29although it's not at all unusual either
- 00:12:31this department has been around at USC
- 00:12:33for long time since the 1940s I believe
- 00:12:36but industrial and systems engineering
- 00:12:38is as the f first bullet said is all
- 00:12:41about applying advanced engineering
- 00:12:44tools and technologies to solve business
- 00:12:47problems in some sense I think we're
- 00:12:49sort of the bridge between the business
- 00:12:50schools and the engineering school um
- 00:12:53and and as such it's a natural home for
- 00:12:56an analytics analytics program because
- 00:12:58analytics as a second bullet said
- 00:13:00analytics is a is is a inherently a
- 00:13:03multid-disciplinary field with the
- 00:13:05primary skills uh that we teach and that
- 00:13:08and that are required to practice in
- 00:13:09this field as as statistics as
- 00:13:12programming and as business analysis and
- 00:13:14that's quite a wide variety and that
- 00:13:16which I think makes it a natural fit for
- 00:13:19a industrial systems engineering
- 00:13:20department and as a third bullet As such
- 00:13:23our our students come from all of those
- 00:13:25disciplines we we have a lot of a lot of
- 00:13:27students enter computer science with
- 00:13:29statistics and mathematics other forms
- 00:13:32of engineering backgrounds but also with
- 00:13:35social sciences background you know so
- 00:13:37long as you have a reasonably strong
- 00:13:39background and track record in in
- 00:13:42quantitative disciplines STEM
- 00:13:43disciplines like statistics and
- 00:13:45programming um you know so we our our
- 00:13:48student body is academically very
- 00:13:50diverse and um which which fits well the
- 00:13:54field of
- 00:13:55analytics go ahead David which I'm going
- 00:13:57to define now in the next slide here the
- 00:13:59um you you're you're probably all aware
- 00:14:01you know that there we got these terms
- 00:14:04analytics and data science i'm always
- 00:14:05asked what's the difference why why do
- 00:14:08we have these two programs you know USC
- 00:14:10has a data science program as well and
- 00:14:12as as do many schools
- 00:14:15um it it it's a it's a little bit uh
- 00:14:18hard to hard to clarify at first because
- 00:14:21there's significant overlap in the tools
- 00:14:23and technologies that are used and we we
- 00:14:25we cover largely the same tools R SQL
- 00:14:29Python Tableau cloud platforms
- 00:14:33etc but for different focus you know an
- 00:14:36analytics fitting in the nature of
- 00:14:38industrial and systems engineering
- 00:14:39department is all about using these
- 00:14:41tools to analyze and improve business
- 00:14:44processes uh by enhancing decision-
- 00:14:46making operational efficiency quality um
- 00:14:50whereas data science you know which
- 00:14:52which you know we we certainly teach
- 00:14:54those skills they're they're they're all
- 00:14:56kind of under the same umbrella but
- 00:14:58focus is more on actually developing
- 00:15:00data products so um if you're interested
- 00:15:04in the technologies but want to apply
- 00:15:06them to business problems I think
- 00:15:08analytics is is is a good fit for you
- 00:15:11you know go the next slide please and
- 00:15:12the
- 00:15:13um you know so the what's the benefits
- 00:15:16here you know one one one is that our
- 00:15:17our analytics professionals and our
- 00:15:19graduates are employed in almost every
- 00:15:21industry you can imagine and in
- 00:15:23companies large and small I mean you
- 00:15:25know the the major fields you know
- 00:15:26healthcare uh finance retail but you
- 00:15:30know our our our our alumni and not just
- 00:15:33our alumni analytics professionals are
- 00:15:34pro are employed in every industry um
- 00:15:38they often say can see the immediate
- 00:15:40impact of their work because the an the
- 00:15:43analysis that we do directly influences
- 00:15:46business decisions and outcomes
- 00:15:48analytics um analytics people are I
- 00:15:52always say every analytics professional
- 00:15:54is a consultant some of our students go
- 00:15:57into consulting many do not many go work
- 00:15:59in-house in large corporations but
- 00:16:01they're essentially internal consultants
- 00:16:04they almost always work with business
- 00:16:06business uh um stakeholders business
- 00:16:08professionals so you know uh third
- 00:16:11bullet here various industries finance I
- 00:16:13guess I already said this marketing
- 00:16:14healthcare and more um and uh so that's
- 00:16:18kind of how I distinguish the data
- 00:16:21science from analytics they're both
- 00:16:22fuzzy terms often they're used to mean
- 00:16:24the same thing but that to me is the key
- 00:16:27difference go ahead um quickly on our
- 00:16:32program I don't know how I'll turn it
- 00:16:33over to Tiffany here in a slide or two
- 00:16:34but quickly our program you know is is
- 00:16:37as you're maybe aware if you looked at
- 00:16:39the catalog requires 28 credits most of
- 00:16:42our classes are four credit classes so
- 00:16:44that's seven classes most of our
- 00:16:46students finish in three or four
- 00:16:48semesters uh many many opt for a program
- 00:16:51of um of uh eight credits eight credits
- 00:16:54for their first three semesters and four
- 00:16:56in their last semester to give them time
- 00:16:58to focus on job
- 00:17:00searches our our program has three
- 00:17:03required core classes which are listed
- 00:17:05there and a project-based required
- 00:17:08elective class and then 12 credits which
- 00:17:10is basically three four credit classes
- 00:17:13of electives
- 00:17:17so we are with this program is designed
- 00:17:20to help our students to enable our
- 00:17:23students to get highquality professional
- 00:17:25employment and we have had a good very
- 00:17:28good track record of placing of our
- 00:17:30alumni getting placed in major uh uh
- 00:17:34corporations all across the US and in
- 00:17:36Southern California and beyond uh and
- 00:17:39the core classes are designed to proide
- 00:17:41provide that foundation
- 00:17:43uh our my assumption our assumption in
- 00:17:46designing the program is that most of
- 00:17:48the students that's their goal some of
- 00:17:49our students do go for PhDs but most of
- 00:17:52our students their goal is to get a uh
- 00:17:54is to get a professional position in in
- 00:17:56in analytics um after
- 00:17:59graduation so the the core classes are
- 00:18:02designed to give the foundation for all
- 00:18:04of all aspects of analytics we and then
- 00:18:07this series of electives allow you to
- 00:18:09specialize a bit into one of three or
- 00:18:12four in my mind sub fields of
- 00:18:14analytics some of you these terms will
- 00:18:16be familiar to some of you data
- 00:18:18engineering a very hot field now and um
- 00:18:21uh employing a lot of people including a
- 00:18:24lot of our alumni um data science which
- 00:18:27is more the the algorithmic and
- 00:18:28mathematical aspects data analysis which
- 00:18:31is more the u business uh applications
- 00:18:35of uh of uh performing the analyses and
- 00:18:37interpreting the results and machine
- 00:18:40learning engineering which is kind of
- 00:18:41the the more infrastructure oriented
- 00:18:45platforms and and with a heavy emphasis
- 00:18:47on cloud platforms so as such we've uh
- 00:18:50we've crafted uh we've offer electives
- 00:18:53in in all of those areas here uh and
- 00:18:56these are some of our representative
- 00:18:57elective classes that we that we choose
- 00:18:59from um and I I'm not going to read
- 00:19:02through this list here but but electives
- 00:19:05that enable you to go deeper into the
- 00:19:07the different sub fields of
- 00:19:11analytics um there you'll note here on
- 00:19:14the on that on the slide we had a couple
- 00:19:16asterises we are actually in the middle
- 00:19:18of upgrading upgrading modernizing our
- 00:19:20curriculum and um we we will be offering
- 00:19:24it's not we it's not official in our
- 00:19:26catalog yet we have a we have a process
- 00:19:28to go through on that but within a month
- 00:19:30or two um we'll be following up more
- 00:19:32information we're creating a new core
- 00:19:34class called foundations of analytics
- 00:19:36which the intention is for every for all
- 00:19:38of you to take in your first semester
- 00:19:41one of the goals of that is most of our
- 00:19:44students that enter in the fall are
- 00:19:47actively looking by by October November
- 00:19:50December time frame we're actively
- 00:19:51looking for summer internships and so
- 00:19:54part of our goal is we want to get you
- 00:19:55enough skills in that first semester
- 00:19:58that you can that you can compete for
- 00:19:59those internships and then perform on
- 00:20:02them so this class is is covers all the
- 00:20:04basics the basic skills that that in
- 00:20:07that companies who are hiring interns
- 00:20:09are looking for um so that that's one of
- 00:20:12the new classes several other new
- 00:20:14several other new analytics elective
- 00:20:15classes are being added to the
- 00:20:16curriculum we expect them to get improve
- 00:20:19get approved in the May time frame but
- 00:20:21you know there's a whole process to go
- 00:20:23through that you will be notified when
- 00:20:25those changes are in effect and the of
- 00:20:27course the link there on the bottom is
- 00:20:29the um always has the current version of
- 00:20:32of the catalog requirements
- 00:20:35um so the um here's a sample academic
- 00:20:39plan so in your first semester u
- 00:20:42currently uh predictive analytics and
- 00:20:44fundamentals of data engineering are the
- 00:20:46standard classes to take these are both
- 00:20:47required classes this will be modified
- 00:20:50some somewhat in that the fundamentals
- 00:20:52of data engineering will be replaced by
- 00:20:54the new class called foundations of
- 00:20:56analytics not a not a major adjustment
- 00:20:59here and so the recommendation is that
- 00:21:02in your first two semesters you get the
- 00:21:04three required classes done select one
- 00:21:07of your analytics electives in the
- 00:21:08second class and kind of in the
- 00:21:10direction you want to focus
- 00:21:13uh there's a requirement for a
- 00:21:14project-based elective a class that's
- 00:21:17that involves a major project and that
- 00:21:19could be taken second third or fourth
- 00:21:22semester but we recommend and most of
- 00:21:23the students take it in their third
- 00:21:25semester and then um and then leaving
- 00:21:28the uh the the other two electives one
- 00:21:30of which is from a selected list of
- 00:21:32analytics classes and the other which is
- 00:21:35uh which need which can be taken more
- 00:21:37broadly from the engineering school or
- 00:21:39the university as a whole um with the
- 00:21:41approval of your
- 00:21:44advisor um and I I want to say one more
- 00:21:46thing then I'm gonna turn turn this over
- 00:21:47to to you Tiffany here um so I I just
- 00:21:50wanted to emphasize that we in addition
- 00:21:53to designing our curriculum to help you
- 00:21:57um achieve the professional employment
- 00:21:59that many of you are seeking uh we have
- 00:22:02a lot of other initiatives to help you
- 00:22:04with that we have an active alumni group
- 00:22:06of analytics professionals um who we we
- 00:22:10have we've had we have
- 00:22:11monthly mixers or panel discussions with
- 00:22:15our alumni we have a new uh um analytic
- 00:22:19student association that's arranging for
- 00:22:21both the u these interactions with our
- 00:22:24alumni with other professionals in the
- 00:22:26field um and um and and other social
- 00:22:30events among the students so that that's
- 00:22:32a major focus here of our program um I
- 00:22:35am going to um turn it over here now to
- 00:22:38Tiffany i I do have to leave at 5:30 our
- 00:22:41time so about 8 minutes here so if
- 00:22:43anybody wants to pop any questions in
- 00:22:45the chat before I leave I'll I'll handle
- 00:22:47them then if not you can always reach
- 00:22:48out to me through the contact
- 00:22:50information you have
- 00:22:53awesome Bruce thank you so much for that
- 00:22:55breakdown and providing that additional
- 00:22:56insight within our curriculum and what
- 00:22:58students can expect from the um could
- 00:23:00expect from the analytics program um so
- 00:23:03I'm going to go ahead and um talk to you
- 00:23:05guys about some key fall dates to keep
- 00:23:07in mind so in August we do have many
- 00:23:11orientations so August 13th we'll have
- 00:23:14our online campus orientation for master
- 00:23:17students and then on August 15th will be
- 00:23:20the onampus orientation um and then on
- 00:23:23August 20th we'll have our analytics
- 00:23:25information session that will be in
- 00:23:27person and on August 25th we'll be h
- 00:23:30will be the start of our fall
- 00:23:332025 semester um little bit of a typo
- 00:23:37there um but we'll be very excited to uh
- 00:23:40see you guys at the orientations and
- 00:23:42also in our information session where
- 00:23:44we'll be able to go more into depth of
- 00:23:46what to expect what will what will be
- 00:23:49happening during the fall semester then
- 00:23:51we have some important dates in spring
- 00:23:53and October so we do have a couple of
- 00:23:54holidays and a fall recess but most
- 00:23:57importantly the dates to note is
- 00:23:59September 5th which is the last day to
- 00:24:01add courses and September 12th which is
- 00:24:04the last day to drop a course with
- 00:24:05tuition refund um as you guys are coming
- 00:24:09into the program as you saw in the
- 00:24:10sample plan we do recommend that
- 00:24:12incoming students take only two courses
- 00:24:15um for their first semester so that you
- 00:24:17guys are able to transition into the
- 00:24:19program lead you to a successful start
- 00:24:23um however if there's anything you would
- 00:24:25like to talk about or if you have any
- 00:24:27doubts and maybe want to drop a course
- 00:24:30or there's things that are happening
- 00:24:32please speak with me so that we make
- 00:24:33sure that we don't miss those deadlines
- 00:24:35and then towards the end of the semester
- 00:24:37so November fall we do have a couple
- 00:24:39more holidays and our Thanksgiving break
- 00:24:41uh but we do have final exams set for
- 00:24:44December 10th through the 17th your
- 00:24:46final exams can vary from actual exams
- 00:24:49in class and or projects or papers or
- 00:24:52reports that are due and these will all
- 00:24:55be listed in your syllabus once you've
- 00:24:57registered for your courses for the fall
- 00:25:01semester expected communications so as
- 00:25:04Bruce mentioned we are in the process of
- 00:25:07having a bit of a curriculum update um
- 00:25:10we are hoping to have um those
- 00:25:12curriculum update information by May
- 00:25:17hopefully hopefully by May latest June
- 00:25:20so once we have those final curriculum
- 00:25:22approvals expect to receive email
- 00:25:24communications from me to your USC
- 00:25:26emails so once you have decided to join
- 00:25:29us and have access to your USC portal
- 00:25:32it's very important that you do check
- 00:25:34your USC email because that's where most
- 00:25:36of our communications will be sent to
- 00:25:38your first communication will be within
- 00:25:40the first two weeks of July and in this
- 00:25:43uh notification you'll be receiving the
- 00:25:45curriculum notice whether it was
- 00:25:47approved or if things are changing and
- 00:25:49then any information regarding fall
- 00:25:51registration typically for our incoming
- 00:25:54cohorts since we do recommend you take
- 00:25:56the first two core courses you'll
- 00:25:58receive declarance ahead of time and so
- 00:26:01all of that will be explained to you via
- 00:26:02email along with a couple of PDFs for
- 00:26:05you um that will have instruction in
- 00:26:08there and if you do have any questions
- 00:26:10always feel free to email me either on
- 00:26:12that email thread or separately and then
- 00:26:15a second communication will be sent to
- 00:26:17you in the first week of August this
- 00:26:19will be a reminder of our upcoming MS
- 00:26:22analytics information session for our
- 00:26:24new students as well as um a reminder
- 00:26:27about fall registration information um
- 00:26:30so that you can go ahead and start
- 00:26:32registering for your courses um this
- 00:26:34will vary if you are a domestic student
- 00:26:37um you'll be able to register for your
- 00:26:38courses a little bit sooner um if you
- 00:26:41are an international student you will
- 00:26:43have to clear the STO50 hold which is um
- 00:26:46just you once you arrive on campus you
- 00:26:49meet with OIS and they'll go ahead and
- 00:26:51clear that hold and you'll be able to
- 00:26:52register for your courses but since we
- 00:26:55are anticipating for you guys to be here
- 00:26:57we do have allocated seating for you and
- 00:26:59I will make sure that you have that
- 00:27:00declarance ready for once your 250 hold
- 00:27:03is removed
- 00:27:10and then we have some questions and uh
- 00:27:13Q&As's and then I know we're going to
- 00:27:15let some of our student speakers go
- 00:27:18ahead and answer the the cardinal
- 00:27:21questions and then I'll answer the gold
- 00:27:23questions but I'll let go I'll let David
- 00:27:25go ahead and MC the Q&As's
- 00:27:28actually Tiffany and David I see we have
- 00:27:29a question in the chat I thought I'd try
- 00:27:31to take before I left um George writes
- 00:27:34uh hold on let me let me read it here um
- 00:27:37oh it disappeared but the question was
- 00:27:39basically how how intense is the math in
- 00:27:41the program um statistics is an
- 00:27:43important um aspect of analytics um
- 00:27:46however we recognize that uh a
- 00:27:50significant percentage of our students
- 00:27:52have have it's it's been a few years and
- 00:27:55are a little bit hazy on their on their
- 00:27:57background on math and statistics and in
- 00:27:59the in the first semester we kind of do
- 00:28:02do a refresher on particularly the
- 00:28:04statistics that's required for the class
- 00:28:06i noticed in your in your um question
- 00:28:09you said you had taken some machine
- 00:28:11learning classes i I suspect that you
- 00:28:13covered some statistics in those classes
- 00:28:15unless it was taught purely as an
- 00:28:16algorithmic class um so I guess my qu my
- 00:28:20answer when you say math I distinguish
- 00:28:22math from statistics i don't think I
- 00:28:24would not say it's math heavy it is it
- 00:28:25is statistics does have a stat
- 00:28:28significant component of statistics but
- 00:28:30we we make no big assumptions coming in
- 00:28:33you know some of our students are
- 00:28:35statistics undergrads and come in with a
- 00:28:37lot of background most of them don't
- 00:28:39most of our students come in with a one
- 00:28:41or two undergraduate classes in
- 00:28:43statistics often couple years in the
- 00:28:45past and and uh so in our first semester
- 00:28:49we we make a real effort to get
- 00:28:50everybody up to speed so um I think it
- 00:28:53was George asked the question i before I
- 00:28:55disappear here um if any if there's any
- 00:28:58follow-ups on
- 00:29:02that okay hope that hope that hope that
- 00:29:05answered
- 00:29:08it thanks Dr wilcox i know you have to
- 00:29:11run the class so uh thanks for
- 00:29:14participating uh and with our FAQ
- 00:29:18frequently asked question and Q&A
- 00:29:19question and answer portion I do want to
- 00:29:22introduce our student ambassadors so
- 00:29:25Gini and Ginshi if you could go ahead
- 00:29:28and uh unmute yourselves and introduce
- 00:29:30yourselves
- 00:29:34oh sure uh I think I can go ahead first
- 00:29:39all
- 00:29:40right and thanks thanks the sharing of
- 00:29:43Brooks actually I'm in the Bruce class
- 00:29:45right now so I'm skipping the class so I
- 00:29:48was so surprised to see Bruce was was
- 00:29:50here you know because I I was supposed
- 00:29:52to in the classroom right now
- 00:29:55yeah I I'm a first year second semester
- 00:29:59analytical students right now and uh
- 00:30:02this semester I'm taking two courses all
- 00:30:04by Bruce so yeah he's he's a man and
- 00:30:10yeah I'm here to answer any questions
- 00:30:13from the students and uh don't be shy uh
- 00:30:17and we are here to help
- 00:30:20oh hi i'm G and it's my third semester
- 00:30:23here so uh I do have Bruce's class
- 00:30:26tomorrow so I don't have any conflict
- 00:30:29and please feel free to ask any question
- 00:30:32also include any question in life about
- 00:30:34USC or any concerns
- 00:30:38okay well thank you Jenshi and Jini
- 00:30:41um we're just going to dive right into
- 00:30:43it first questions uh what are classes
- 00:30:46like what is the demand of the
- 00:30:48coursework and what has been your
- 00:30:50favorite class or classes thus far
- 00:30:55uh oh we're going to ask this question
- 00:30:58right yes okay uh I think the on average
- 00:31:02in every semester you're going to take
- 00:31:04two classes and how demanding is the
- 00:31:08coursework uh regularly is the one
- 00:31:11homework per week so a homework per two
- 00:31:14classes and my favorite class is a class
- 00:31:18I took last semester called um
- 00:31:21optimization methods i think mainly
- 00:31:23because my major when I was in undergrad
- 00:31:25is math and that course is mainly on
- 00:31:29math so I think I think that that's my
- 00:31:32my area and my and the skill set match
- 00:31:36perfectly with my background so uh I
- 00:31:39handle well on that course so that's why
- 00:31:42and I and I'm doing a greater this
- 00:31:44semester for that class so that's why I
- 00:31:47have some like special feelings for that
- 00:31:50for the knowledge in statistics and uh
- 00:31:53some linear programming stuff and do you
- 00:31:57feel safe and around campus yeah I take
- 00:32:00a huge advantage of the free lift
- 00:32:02program i literally took free lift every
- 00:32:05day so I would say it keeps it keeps us
- 00:32:08I'll say it's a safe uh safe around the
- 00:32:13campus especially if you live in the DPS
- 00:32:16area and how did you find your housing
- 00:32:19and roommates uh currently I I'm living
- 00:32:23in a 5B 4B uh house and I find I find a
- 00:32:29housing by on WeChat and with random
- 00:32:33roommate and
- 00:32:35currently my form roommates uh two of
- 00:32:39them are local student from US and two
- 00:32:42of them are from China and they all in
- 00:32:46Verbby program so yeah and and they're
- 00:32:49al they're master student as well and
- 00:32:53what do you do for fun in LA um I joined
- 00:32:57the tennis club in
- 00:32:59uh in in USC and I I'll say it's pretty
- 00:33:03fun the only part is that we need to
- 00:33:07play off campus but we can take the free
- 00:33:09metro by the uh metro program usc
- 00:33:14provide free uh metro pass for students
- 00:33:18so we can take the metro to the off-c
- 00:33:20campus court pretty convenient so I
- 00:33:22would say not too bad
- 00:33:25sounds really cool so about me uh I
- 00:33:30think for the classes uh it mainly take
- 00:33:33about like two hours for each either
- 00:33:38Monday or Wednesday Tuesday or Thursday
- 00:33:40like for two days per week for the class
- 00:33:43and the course load really depends on
- 00:33:47which class you are taking like for
- 00:33:49professor Bruce he do have assignment
- 00:33:51for each week and I do have another
- 00:33:53professor that maybe two to three weeks
- 00:33:56have one homework uh it really depends
- 00:33:59on the content and the things that you
- 00:34:03are study for uh one of my favorite
- 00:34:05course was 535 data mining course uh the
- 00:34:10professor h but he was gone he he went
- 00:34:12back to Texas like uh he changed his
- 00:34:16final exam into a final project because
- 00:34:19so many student want a project that can
- 00:34:23prove what they learn from the class and
- 00:34:25that's something that I think is really
- 00:34:27cool that we can talk to professor and
- 00:34:30negotiate to talk about our uh desire
- 00:34:34for for the resume or for something that
- 00:34:37we really need and that's one of really
- 00:34:41impressive class that I I've ever took
- 00:34:44because it all I took it on my first
- 00:34:46semester so that's really impressive for
- 00:34:48me and uh for leave around campus I'm
- 00:34:55living nearby number 10 highway so it's
- 00:34:58a it's one road away from DPS area and
- 00:35:03recently like I feel more safer than
- 00:35:06before because from last year there were
- 00:35:08some homeless cars that even drive by
- 00:35:11and also stopped by my house but in this
- 00:35:14year maybe because of the policy or
- 00:35:17maybe Trump I don't know they all left
- 00:35:20and I feel really safe than before and I
- 00:35:22can feel that some police are going
- 00:35:25around and I can take lift if I need
- 00:35:28when it was really late when I study at
- 00:35:30library so it's it's pretty safe to stay
- 00:35:34nearby and uh my roommates are all from
- 00:35:38China and even one of them are from same
- 00:35:42area as mine so we really have a really
- 00:35:45good friendship we go hang out together
- 00:35:47and have food together so I think
- 00:35:50roomies are really like we we we are
- 00:35:53really good roommates we are basically
- 00:35:56friends together right now and some
- 00:35:59things that I do feel fan in LA is that
- 00:36:03personally I do like to go to galleries
- 00:36:05or gardens i've been to uh Getty Gallery
- 00:36:10for a couple of times and also for the
- 00:36:12Huntington Library so I can drive there
- 00:36:15to feel the environment feel the
- 00:36:19knowledge or culture that this area have
- 00:36:22that's something I feel really fun
- 00:36:24really cool
- 00:36:27thank you for sharing and thank you for
- 00:36:28your cander
- 00:36:30Gi
- 00:36:31um hang tight we'll get back to you
- 00:36:34tiffany I wanted to ask you if I'm a
- 00:36:36student and let's say I have limited
- 00:36:38Python background because maybe my
- 00:36:41undergraduate studies were in finance or
- 00:36:44business um what courses can I take to
- 00:36:47improve my programming skills yeah so as
- 00:36:50Bruce mentioned that um our analytic
- 00:36:53students come from multid-disciplinary
- 00:36:56um backgrounds and so some of them can
- 00:36:59be STEMheavy some of them come from the
- 00:37:00social behavioral sciences and so the
- 00:37:03reason why we require or we recommend
- 00:37:05you take the two um core courses your
- 00:37:08first semester is because it will
- 00:37:11provide a review of what to expect for
- 00:37:13the program and also brush up any skills
- 00:37:16that you need moving forward um those
- 00:37:19courses um were listed earlier and we
- 00:37:22will share this with you and I will also
- 00:37:25provide this information on the fall
- 00:37:26registration and those courses are ISC
- 00:37:29529 and ISC 558 um some students would
- 00:37:33typically take ISC 529 and ISC 530 with
- 00:37:37ISC 530 being optimization um but since
- 00:37:40it is very math heavy um and we
- 00:37:43understand that some of our students
- 00:37:44need to brush up a little bit on their
- 00:37:46math we kind of were starting to
- 00:37:47recommend that course to be geared
- 00:37:49towards their second semester instead of
- 00:37:51their first semester just so that they
- 00:37:53feel confident in their skills and are
- 00:37:55able to establish um a good first
- 00:37:58semester within the program
- 00:38:01and
- 00:38:02to one more question for you Tiffany um
- 00:38:06as far as electives so again I'm a
- 00:38:08student i look at the curriculum and I
- 00:38:11see what are these advisor approved
- 00:38:13electives um what can I take with these
- 00:38:16advisor approved electives and where can
- 00:38:18I find them yes so for advisor appro
- 00:38:21approved electives um a majority of our
- 00:38:24ISC 500 level courses that are four
- 00:38:26units are part of that elective
- 00:38:28pre-approved elective group um since
- 00:38:31they do meet the standards to meet the
- 00:38:33analytics elective requirements um those
- 00:38:36can be found in your handbook as well as
- 00:38:39a PDF that I will be sharing with you
- 00:38:41guys when I send out the fall
- 00:38:42registration information um we also are
- 00:38:46pretty lenient when it comes to our
- 00:38:48electives since we do understand that
- 00:38:49students are going to attempt different
- 00:38:52backgrounds of professional fields and
- 00:38:54so there may be courses outside of the
- 00:38:56ISC department that they're interested
- 00:38:58in taking and so if there is a course
- 00:39:01that you're interested in and it's not
- 00:39:02on our pre-approved elective list let's
- 00:39:05say it's like a computer science course
- 00:39:06if you want to do something that's has a
- 00:39:08little bit more program heavy background
- 00:39:11or it's a course from the Marshall
- 00:39:13School of Business so that you're able
- 00:39:15to develop those soft skills in terms of
- 00:39:18like business and management as Bruce
- 00:39:20mentioned analytics is kind of that
- 00:39:21bridge between engineering and business
- 00:39:24and so we do offer that to our students
- 00:39:27where if they see something that they
- 00:39:29believe that will benefit them they let
- 00:39:32us know what course that is and we'll
- 00:39:33review it just to ensure that it'll meet
- 00:39:35our elective requirements and we'll go
- 00:39:38ahead and approve it if so and if not
- 00:39:40since we will already know what it is
- 00:39:42that you're looking for we can recommend
- 00:39:44electives um that are already
- 00:39:47preapproved that will meet that criteria
- 00:39:49for you
- 00:39:51thank you Tiffany
- 00:39:53uh for the student
- 00:39:55ambassadors what is one thing that you
- 00:39:58wish you would have known prior to
- 00:40:01coming to USC like you maybe you had a
- 00:40:04mentor or a senior that provided you
- 00:40:06some sage advice before entering the
- 00:40:09program or LA um what's something you
- 00:40:12wish you would have known that you can
- 00:40:14kind of provide our new students
- 00:40:18yeah the the one thing I wish I I would
- 00:40:21know before I came here is that you
- 00:40:23should apply for the summer internship
- 00:40:26as soon as possible and I know some
- 00:40:29people uh even apply start start apply
- 00:40:32for the summer internship before they
- 00:40:34came to USC so so I would say that's a
- 00:40:37huge advantage please if you want to
- 00:40:40find a job uh directly after the
- 00:40:42graduation it's the perfect time uh
- 00:40:46right now actually it's the perfect time
- 00:40:47to uh start looking for the positions i
- 00:40:51saw a question by uh B on the Q&A
- 00:40:54section and uh they're asking that what
- 00:40:58career fields and position are you
- 00:41:00looking for after graduation uh for me
- 00:41:02I'm I'm currently applying for the
- 00:41:04summer internship and the positions I'm
- 00:41:06applying for uh are data scientist and
- 00:41:10data analyst so right now it's March
- 00:41:13maybe it's a little bit too early but uh
- 00:41:15before coming to USC like uh June or
- 00:41:19July is the right time to start
- 00:41:22considering what do you want to do after
- 00:41:24graduation or for the summer internship
- 00:41:27so uh do the research and apply for the
- 00:41:30uh internships as soon as possible is
- 00:41:32the one thing that I wish I could I wish
- 00:41:35I would know earlier you know yeah
- 00:41:41oh like as Ginti has said so also answer
- 00:41:46this question so I'm also applying for
- 00:41:49analytics related background and also
- 00:41:52maybe some business analytics or
- 00:41:56analytics related background when I
- 00:41:58search on the LinkedIn or simplify or
- 00:42:01any job board uh website um I will say
- 00:42:06that my application is even I need to
- 00:42:11make it more hairy like I'm going to
- 00:42:13graduate in this year so uh for the
- 00:42:17error it really depends on which course
- 00:42:19you are taking i think for courses like
- 00:42:22study for SQL and Tableau they are most
- 00:42:25effective for analytic uh positions so
- 00:42:29that's something that we mostly apply
- 00:42:31for and for data science it need more
- 00:42:34Python and more deep skills in the
- 00:42:36program skills so that's something that
- 00:42:39this program can really provide like a
- 00:42:41lot of courses uh in analytics they
- 00:42:45provide deep learning for the machine
- 00:42:47learning for the Python that's something
- 00:42:50really helpful for me to apply for the
- 00:42:53job that I needed and yeah that's
- 00:42:56basically I can say about it
- 00:43:00thank you so now we're going to turn it
- 00:43:02over to
- 00:43:04the attendees in this meeting so if you
- 00:43:07have any questions please go ahead and
- 00:43:09drop them in the chat um you feel free
- 00:43:12to unmute
- 00:43:13yourself um yeah we're here take
- 00:43:17advantage of these student
- 00:43:19ambassadors
- 00:43:21uh yeah any questions you have
- 00:43:33i can get us started with one question i
- 00:43:35know they asked for jobs and employment
- 00:43:38opportunities but um Jin I think or Gong
- 00:43:43sorry I'm use your last name um I know
- 00:43:45you are in your second semester so for
- 00:43:49CPT have you started looking into CPT or
- 00:43:52for internships um now that you're
- 00:43:54meeting that academic eligibility
- 00:43:56threshold and for Yin Yi I also want to
- 00:43:59ask if you've utilized CPT or have um
- 00:44:03looked into any internships um during
- 00:44:05your time here
- 00:44:07uh right now I have been applied about
- 00:44:11200 applications to different companies
- 00:44:14and for more than 90% of the job
- 00:44:17position are data scientist and data
- 00:44:20analyst
- 00:44:21uh so uh I got few in uh inter uh
- 00:44:27interviews uh past few months and but
- 00:44:31only like no more than five so the
- 00:44:34conversion rate is really low you need
- 00:44:36to apply a lot of do a lot of
- 00:44:40applications and the process is will
- 00:44:44last very long so you need to be patient
- 00:44:47and keep tailoring your resume preparing
- 00:44:50your u cover letter so those are really
- 00:44:55important things you need to have you
- 00:44:57need to be prepared to get ready for
- 00:45:00applying for a job so do the
- 00:45:04preparations as early as possible yeah
- 00:45:10so I I do send out like from last year
- 00:45:16uh November I've started to send out my
- 00:45:18resume like five each day and it's
- 00:45:22approximately 500 to 600 send outs and I
- 00:45:27do pass one of the like interview but
- 00:45:31it's an unpaid job is about the data
- 00:45:35service that is fully remote and I
- 00:45:38talked to Tiffany two weeks before about
- 00:45:41it because I was applying for this CBT i
- 00:45:44got refused uh last week I think maybe
- 00:45:48it's not called refuse but something
- 00:45:50that I need to add more information or
- 00:45:53things that they needed yes so uh they
- 00:45:56asked me to revise my like the offer
- 00:46:00letter and something that I need to
- 00:46:02repair prepare recently because I was
- 00:46:06out for the spring recess and I will say
- 00:46:09that
- 00:46:10the our CP course uh is kind of worth it
- 00:46:14than other department I believe because
- 00:46:17we can spend $1,000 for half unit and
- 00:46:22you can use it after your first usage
- 00:46:24like you can still use this course only
- 00:46:28with this ass,000 spend like if you for
- 00:46:31instance for my semester if I use it for
- 00:46:33my third semester I can still use it for
- 00:46:36my summer and for my last semester and
- 00:46:39uh the whole process is not really
- 00:46:41difficult it's something that you need
- 00:46:43to prepare all the information and uh to
- 00:46:47apply it on your my
- 00:46:50usc.edu edu website and the department
- 00:46:55will tell you that what things that you
- 00:46:56need to prepare or need to do uh to make
- 00:47:00sure that the whole process is going on
- 00:47:01and going well like even for unpaid even
- 00:47:05they are not recommended but um I think
- 00:47:08CPT is is kind of worth it because I
- 00:47:11have never used it before even I have
- 00:47:13opportunity from my undergraduate school
- 00:47:16so yeah it it's time worth it to to sp
- 00:47:21to spend a lot of time to send our
- 00:47:23resume because of the current
- 00:47:25circumstances is pressure and we have
- 00:47:28less jobs than before so I spend a lot
- 00:47:31of time and really get this result even
- 00:47:33it's not really a best or the success
- 00:47:37that I really wanted but I think it's
- 00:47:39kind of the first step first like thing
- 00:47:42that I I've been looking for this long
- 00:47:45time so always work for something is
- 00:47:48really worth it like I I didn't expect
- 00:47:51to get get a job really really this
- 00:47:54quick so for something like this yes
- 00:47:56just work for it yeah yeah no yeah uni
- 00:48:00did we did talk and we did have a
- 00:48:02meeting about that so for CPT the
- 00:48:04instructions are pretty clear but
- 00:48:06sometimes um as a way for us to protect
- 00:48:08our students and making sure that
- 00:48:10everything falls within guidelines there
- 00:48:12are some very specific criteria that
- 00:48:15needs to be on offer letters for um
- 00:48:18internships for our international
- 00:48:19students and so like she mentioned it is
- 00:48:22not necessarily a rejection but more so
- 00:48:25like we need additional information of
- 00:48:27what you're going to be doing making
- 00:48:28sure it falls in line and again it's a
- 00:48:30way for us to well by us I mean USC to
- 00:48:33make sure our students are getting the
- 00:48:35internship that they honestly really
- 00:48:37deserve but also making sure that
- 00:48:39they're protected and they're going to
- 00:48:41get out of it what they're putting into
- 00:48:43it um I do see another question on the
- 00:48:47chat and this is from George um so he
- 00:48:51did mention that he's interested in in
- 00:48:54launching a startup after graduation on
- 00:48:57the side as well as getting the OPT
- 00:48:59training so you were wondering if USC
- 00:49:02offers advice on that especially for
- 00:49:04international students who wish their to
- 00:49:06launch their own startups in California
- 00:49:09um I'll answer that on the advisor side
- 00:49:11and then I'll let the student um
- 00:49:13ambassadors to go ahead and answer that
- 00:49:15so for that I would honestly recommend
- 00:49:17you talking to VCC which is Verby career
- 00:49:20connections it is the career center
- 00:49:22office that is specifically for for
- 00:49:25Vurby and our engineers um they'll be a
- 00:49:28great point of contact they also have
- 00:49:30workshops and are able to connect you
- 00:49:32with um possible employers or internship
- 00:49:35opportunities that help um gear our
- 00:49:38students towards what they're looking
- 00:49:40for so that's definitely a resource that
- 00:49:42I would recommend you utilize and then
- 00:49:44as for OPT OPT is more of a conversation
- 00:49:47that we would have towards your final
- 00:49:49semester since international students
- 00:49:51are are eligible for OPT 90 days prior
- 00:49:55to their graduation date and so if
- 00:49:58you're utilizing CPT or if you're able
- 00:50:00to utilize CPT through like internships
- 00:50:03and build that connection with BCC and
- 00:50:06utilize their resources as well you
- 00:50:08should be able to find what you're
- 00:50:10looking for um when you're able to
- 00:50:12utilize the resources that USC gives you
- 00:50:14from all the various offices and
- 00:50:16departments you'll definitely be able to
- 00:50:18find something for you um but then I'll
- 00:50:21go ahead and let the students respond
- 00:50:25tiffany could you repeat the present for
- 00:50:27us
- 00:50:28yes so the question is
- 00:50:33um they were wondering if they had any
- 00:50:35advice on the OPT training in terms of
- 00:50:40international students to launch their
- 00:50:42startup in California so I know for like
- 00:50:45OPT training we would recommend you to
- 00:50:47like follow the process with on the
- 00:50:49advisor side with OIS and then I would
- 00:50:52recommend you to go ahead and utilize
- 00:50:54the VCC connections uh career
- 00:50:56connections and or the central USC
- 00:50:59career center um as for our student
- 00:51:02ambassadors I'm not sure if they'll be
- 00:51:04able to answer because they haven't gone
- 00:51:06to the point of utilizing OPT just yet
- 00:51:09um but David I don't know if you have
- 00:51:11anything else to add on to that as our
- 00:51:13director
- 00:51:15yeah I would also add speak to faculty
- 00:51:18especially Dr wilcox cuz you know all of
- 00:51:22our instructors have a wealth
- 00:51:24of work experience not only in the
- 00:51:27industry but in academia and so they're
- 00:51:30going to be very valuable resources
- 00:51:32invaluable resources for you um I would
- 00:51:36say getting good with your peers because
- 00:51:38obviously they're going to be part of
- 00:51:39your network you may eventually hire
- 00:51:41some of them um and so I think
- 00:51:45unfortunately I think uh Ginchi and Jini
- 00:51:48I don't know if you can
- 00:51:50um basically provide more information
- 00:51:53but uh I would say in addition to what
- 00:51:55Tiffany mentioned VCC Vurby Career
- 00:51:59Connections basically USC has a central
- 00:52:02career services office well Verby has
- 00:52:05their own uh career services office
- 00:52:08called VCC and so they are there to help
- 00:52:12you and and just in case it wasn't clear
- 00:52:15Verby students have access to a lot of
- 00:52:17resources u not only centrally from USC
- 00:52:21but we also have a lot of our own
- 00:52:23resources and so uh please take
- 00:52:25advantage of them while you're here
- 00:52:31i know we have a few minutes
- 00:52:33left um any other
- 00:52:39questions i do want to
- 00:52:43share the last page of this which is our
- 00:52:47contact
- 00:52:48information so just again Dr bruce
- 00:52:51Wilcox program director and one of the
- 00:52:54main faculty for the analytics program
- 00:52:56uh Tiffany Castro main advisor for the
- 00:53:00analytics program
- 00:53:02and though I'm the director let's just
- 00:53:05say Tiffany is out sick on vacation i'm
- 00:53:08more than happy to help um we are really
- 00:53:11here to act as a conduit and help you
- 00:53:14with your um academic journey here at
- 00:53:18USC so please feel free to reach out we
- 00:53:21are more than happy to help um if you
- 00:53:24have any questions um if you have any
- 00:53:28anxiety doubts about what to expect
- 00:53:31please reach out to us our emails are
- 00:53:33there i I'm happy to meet with students
- 00:53:37on Zoom i know you know we're we're
- 00:53:39different time zones away but always
- 00:53:41happy to take a meeting um but there is
- 00:53:45that slide and again are there any last
- 00:53:48second questions
- 00:53:51i do have one for student ambassadors
- 00:53:52just to um close us off and I guess that
- 00:53:55would be if you were to have if you had
- 00:53:59the opportunity to start the program you
- 00:54:02know fresh once again with the knowledge
- 00:54:04you already have what would you maybe do
- 00:54:07differently and or what advice would you
- 00:54:11give to yourself um for coming into the
- 00:54:14program
- 00:54:16that's that's a good question
- 00:54:20um I'll say I I am right now pretty
- 00:54:24satisfied with what I have done for the
- 00:54:28last semester cuz uh not going to brag
- 00:54:32but I I got all A's so in terms of the
- 00:54:35the grades I can't I can't do better but
- 00:54:38with the mindset I'll just say I I I
- 00:54:42need to put more time in finding job not
- 00:54:44just uh focusing on the courses itself
- 00:54:47because um yeah for me uh my career goal
- 00:54:50right now after the graduation is want
- 00:54:52to find a job uh so yeah I wish I could
- 00:54:56have uh spend more time in like because
- 00:55:01we only have two classes every week we
- 00:55:03have a lot of time to free time to spend
- 00:55:05by ourselves to decide uh maybe if you
- 00:55:09if you're looking for a PhD after
- 00:55:11graduation you need to do some uh
- 00:55:12research in a lab with some professors
- 00:55:14and if you want to find a job you just
- 00:55:17uh like dig deeper on the industries so
- 00:55:22I think that the mindset will be a
- 00:55:24little bit different so that's that's
- 00:55:27the thing I want I I wish I could change
- 00:55:30yeah
- 00:55:33i would say that I may um focusing to
- 00:55:38find classes that's more program related
- 00:55:41also something that I need to learn
- 00:55:43maybe online that if I need to enrich
- 00:55:46myself more because currently uh I do
- 00:55:50have more knowledge and background in
- 00:55:52SQL and Tableau but not for the Python
- 00:55:55part so if I start over I maybe focus
- 00:55:59more centrally more detailed on the
- 00:56:01Python programming that's something
- 00:56:03really crucial for finding jobs also
- 00:56:05like the things that Gini has said that
- 00:56:07I need to apply jobs much more earlier
- 00:56:11even I started last November but I think
- 00:56:14it can be more earlier than I've been
- 00:56:17expected and try to maybe make more
- 00:56:20friends and that's something I think is
- 00:56:23more important than just apply to jobs
- 00:56:26is to make new friends and communicate
- 00:56:29with people that already in the industry
- 00:56:31or to professor that say your any your
- 00:56:36concerns or any your questions to the
- 00:56:38people that already in this area and
- 00:56:41know a lot know things a lot so that's
- 00:56:44something that I think is really
- 00:56:46important and if I can go back I'm going
- 00:56:49to do this at the first
- 00:56:54time awesome thank you Gingi thank you
- 00:56:57Gingi for
- 00:56:59participating providing your sage advice
- 00:57:01to your the new students coming in um
- 00:57:05thank you Tiffany for um contributing as
- 00:57:09well and right now I want to turn it
- 00:57:12back to Paula to close the webinar

- 00:57:20uh we all had a little bit of insight in
