- 00:01:09um it's been a marriage it's been a
- 00:01:1120-year marriage and our goals align our
- 00:01:15goals are align because we know what
- 00:01:16what the end result we we know what the
- 00:01:19end result is to be and that's just to
- 00:01:21be the greatest and to be a champion and
- 00:01:23so every day we challenge each other you
- 00:01:26know you need to be the best athlete you
- 00:01:28need to be the best basketball player I
- 00:01:30need to be the best athletic trainer for
- 00:01:32you and so every day we challenge each
- 00:01:34other and you know we we've we've uh you
- 00:01:38know we've had this 20-year marriage if
- 00:01:39you want to call it and because we
- 00:01:41challenge each other each and every day
- 00:01:43so do you remember the day that you had
- 00:01:44the conversation about what LeBron wants
- 00:01:46to be and the answer was the greatest of
- 00:01:49all time the greatest yes MH when did he
- 00:01:51first say that to you uh it it was
- 00:01:53really early on in his career it was
- 00:01:55probably he was 19 or 20 years old when
- 00:01:56we had that conversation and um I said
- 00:01:59okay well Let's uh you know and then
- 00:02:01again I was only 24 25 at the time as
- 00:02:03well you know I'm only 8 years I'm I'm 8
- 00:02:07years older older than he is and so but
- 00:02:09it was my second year in the MBA so I
- 00:02:11was just learning as well and so I said
- 00:02:13okay let's do the research you know what
- 00:02:15others have done what has failed for
- 00:02:17others and so let's let's just learn
- 00:02:19from other people's mistakes and let's
- 00:02:21build let's build our own journey and
- 00:02:22when you say you challenge each other
- 00:02:24every day can you give me an insight and
- 00:02:26our audience an insight into what that
- 00:02:27actually looks like what are behaviors
- 00:02:30what are the conversations sure so you
- 00:02:32know we challenge each other each and
- 00:02:34every day but I say day but the
- 00:02:36challenge Begins the night before how
- 00:02:38much sleep did you get you need to be in
- 00:02:39bed by a certain amount by by a certain
- 00:02:41time in order for you to get a full 8 to
- 00:02:4410 hours of sleep which is ideal for
- 00:02:46someone who's burning all these calories
- 00:02:47and who's pushing themselves each and
- 00:02:49every day so uh every day starts with
- 00:02:53nighttime the night before come in sleep
- 00:02:55well rested well hydrated you know did
- 00:02:57you hydrate the night before did you
- 00:02:58hydrate before you came came in did you
- 00:03:00have a little snack before before we uh
- 00:03:02before we uh lift weights Etc and do our
- 00:03:05workouts so all those are challenging
- 00:03:07yourselves and challenging your
- 00:03:08accountability so it's just an ongoing
- 00:03:11process I think you can you can follow
- 00:03:12our our our step now in our process it's
- 00:03:15not really cut and dry it's just it's
- 00:03:18overlapping it's constantly overlapping
- 00:03:20and it's it's an entirety it's an entire
- 00:03:22process that just overlaps each other
- 00:03:24and is there ever a day where he says
- 00:03:25yeah I had 8 hours sleep I've had my
- 00:03:27nutrition I drunk my water and you're
- 00:03:28thinking I don't think you're
- 00:03:31telling there's there there's been a few
- 00:03:33days like that there been a few days but
- 00:03:35uh luckily he's very transparent with me
- 00:03:37and and and and he's he takes full
- 00:03:39accountability you know he'll look at me
- 00:03:40and say well Mike you know we had some
- 00:03:43some some guests over last night we you
- 00:03:44know we had because I think this is an
- 00:03:45important place to almost begin the
- 00:03:47conversation that even LeBron James is
- 00:03:49flawed the greatest people in the world
- 00:03:51are flawed people aren't perfect you
- 00:03:52know corre they slip correct yes yes yes
- 00:03:54you know and and it's and it's all part
- 00:03:56of the journey it's all part of the
- 00:03:57journey you know we're not robots you
- 00:04:00know and I'll talk about it in my book
- 00:04:01as well you know we're not we we're
- 00:04:03going to have you know days where you
- 00:04:05know we don't we don't hit hit a glams a
- 00:04:07grand slam you know so we we're going to
- 00:04:09have days like that so but what what
- 00:04:12matters and what's important is how
- 00:04:14quickly do you get back up how quickly
- 00:04:15do you do you start your process again
- 00:04:18uh for greatness if this is how you push
- 00:04:20him how does he push you uh he pushes me
- 00:04:24by just you know he he questions um you
- 00:04:28know Mike and I read something there or
- 00:04:30I saw this on on on on a on a on a TV
- 00:04:32show about training or about this or
- 00:04:34about that why aren't we doing that or
- 00:04:36do we do some of that you know so he'll
- 00:04:38question some of the things that he sees
- 00:04:40or he overhears we're always uh you know
- 00:04:43trying to evolve in what we're doing and
- 00:04:45uh educating each other and I think that
- 00:04:47that idea of evolution is important you
- 00:04:49know we had a a guest on the podcast
- 00:04:51Professor Brian Cox who said you need to
- 00:04:52think like a scientist you have to be
- 00:04:54proved wrong love that yes does that
- 00:04:57does that speak to you absolutely
- 00:04:58absolutely yes because
- 00:05:00on once you think you you got all the
- 00:05:01answers and you know everything well
- 00:05:03then you're definitely going to fail
- 00:05:05because uh science is evolving training
- 00:05:08is evolving you know the the way uh the
- 00:05:11these men and women now they play the
- 00:05:13game of basketball that's evolving and
- 00:05:15so you know you really have to be uh on
- 00:05:17on The Cutting Edge if you will you know
- 00:05:19to to borrow catch rates you really have
- 00:05:22to be on on The Cutting Edge and do your
- 00:05:23research and with all of these years of
- 00:05:26you two pushing each other and you
- 00:05:27holding him to account him holding you
- 00:05:29to account and looking for new ways to
- 00:05:31evolve when you reflect what do you
- 00:05:33think is the is the greatest lesson that
- 00:05:36you've taught
- 00:05:37him the greatest lesson that I have
- 00:05:40taught him I believe is just consistency
- 00:05:43you know being consistent I I I actually
- 00:05:45think we've taught each other that
- 00:05:47because again we challenge each other
- 00:05:49each and every day you know I'm not
- 00:05:51going to back down he's not going to
- 00:05:52back down so what what what has happened
- 00:05:55here is now we both become Uber
- 00:05:57consistent in in in our process and what
- 00:05:59we're doing so consistency has been I
- 00:06:02think the key to everything and why does
- 00:06:03consistency matter so much because you
- 00:06:07you know what you're going to get out of
- 00:06:08your body and and when when you're in a
- 00:06:12team sport in a team setting then others
- 00:06:15know that you're going to be there for
- 00:06:17them as well okay you know because if
- 00:06:20you're consistent with your with your
- 00:06:21behavior if you're consistent with your
- 00:06:24uh you know with your attitude with with
- 00:06:27your um performance
- 00:06:30then there's there's no question on uh
- 00:06:33you know the teammates don't have to
- 00:06:34question what you're what you're going
- 00:06:35to bring to the table that particular
- 00:06:37day they know what you're going to get
- 00:06:39now I want to delve into the specifics
- 00:06:40that you and LeBron have worked on over
- 00:06:41the years but I think it's also
- 00:06:43important to make it clear to the
- 00:06:44audience that are watching this that you
- 00:06:46didn't just rock up when LeBron was some
- 00:06:48Global Mega star like this has been a
- 00:06:51long journey yes so you were there right
- 00:06:53at the very beginning is that right I
- 00:06:55was there when uh when the Cavaliers
- 00:06:57just drafted him they had just drafted
- 00:06:59him and I was was the summer league
- 00:07:00intern athletic trainer uh for for the
- 00:07:03Cleveland Cavaliers and you know we just
- 00:07:04started at at the same time um I was
- 00:07:08done after the summer league uh and he
- 00:07:10he did his his rookie year I went back
- 00:07:12to to University and I came back his
- 00:07:15second season fulltime and how did you
- 00:07:17end up in the NFL what was your route
- 00:07:18into that world it was really just a lot
- 00:07:21of uh interning a lot of cold calls a
- 00:07:24lot of just volunteer work uh it was it
- 00:07:26it was probably a five to six year
- 00:07:29Journey For Me of volunteering of of
- 00:07:32taking jobs at high schools of taking
- 00:07:34jobs at physical therapy clinics of
- 00:07:37working with minor league baseball you
- 00:07:39know U again interning with with
- 00:07:43paramedics with hospitals with clinics
- 00:07:45and just just to try to get as much
- 00:07:47experience as I could in the field of
- 00:07:49sports medicine and so finally uh the
- 00:07:52Cavaliers they said okay come on and
- 00:07:53we'll give you a chance uh to be our
- 00:07:55summer league intern and um you know the
- 00:07:58rest is history
- 00:08:00yes did you know that less than half of
- 00:08:03Brits eat breakfast every day of the
- 00:08:05week I mean that's amazing but why well
- 00:08:07it's cuz we're all time poor especially
- 00:08:09in the mornings so we compromise my fix
- 00:08:12is hu's nutritionally complete high

- 00:08:30was it was letters it was phone calls it
- 00:08:32was before email it it was right it was
- 00:08:35right before email was really popular I
- 00:08:37don't know I don't know how how you know
- 00:08:38how to use email hours and hours of
- 00:08:40letters letters you know like in the
- 00:08:42envelope you know go to go post office
- 00:08:44send you know put you know anyone under
- 00:08:4621 is thinking what's an envelope what's
- 00:08:47a letter I don't understand what this
- 00:08:49guy talking
- 00:08:51about what kept you going in those times
- 00:08:54CU I think look LeBron story is amazing
- 00:08:55we'll talk about it but I think you know
- 00:08:57let's let's do do service to you your
- 00:09:00story as well Mike is amazing how you
- 00:09:02ended up in the world of of the NBA yeah
- 00:09:04well you know it was just um I come from
- 00:09:07from from a small town Brownsville Texas
- 00:09:09which is right on the border is right on
- 00:09:11the US Mexico border and so you know we
- 00:09:13don't have access to a lot of you know
- 00:09:15Big Time pro pro sporting teams Etc or
- 00:09:17programs and so we um I've always had
- 00:09:22lofty aspirations you know to to to be
- 00:09:25involved in professional sports at
- 00:09:26whatever level you know I was I know I
- 00:09:28wasn't going to play cuz uh you know
- 00:09:30after after high school I run out of
- 00:09:31talent and so and so you know I said
- 00:09:33okay I really love uh medicine and
- 00:09:36biology and Anatomy physiology why don't
- 00:09:38I why don't I merge the two so I did
- 00:09:40that I said you know I I can I can get a
- 00:09:42job in in sports medicine and then when
- 00:09:45I got to college and I was an intern I
- 00:09:47said well why can't I do this at the pro
- 00:09:49level and so right then and then I
- 00:09:52decided you know I'm I'm going to I'm
- 00:09:53going to I'm going to do this I'm I'm
- 00:09:56going to I'm going to become uh a sports
- 00:09:58medicine uh you know the athletic
- 00:10:00trainer for for a professional sports
- 00:10:03team and I'm going to do all do all the
- 00:10:05leg work and the ground work that that I
- 00:10:06need to do to get there and did you
- 00:10:09think that the dream of of a life in the
- 00:10:11NBA was never going to happen at any
- 00:10:13point there was a couple times where you
- 00:10:16know I I was I was a little dejected I
- 00:10:18was a little you know turned off by uh
- 00:10:21by U you know some of the responses I
- 00:10:22was getting you know even some of the
- 00:10:24people RH like oh you know maybe it's
- 00:10:26just not meant for you but all that did
- 00:10:28was really fuel me I said what no you
- 00:10:31know it is for me okay and you're not
- 00:10:33going to tell me that it's not for me so
- 00:10:35you know that that only fueled me more
- 00:10:37once I heard comments like that that you
- 00:10:39know maybe this isn't for you yeah or
- 00:10:41you know or you know maybe a small town
- 00:10:42kid can't can't really get it done so
- 00:10:44what is high performance then high
- 00:10:46performance to me is is is is something
- 00:10:50special to me a high performance is the
- 00:10:52end result of a journey is the sum of
- 00:10:54all these parts so so high high
- 00:10:57performance comes from doing all the
- 00:10:59necessary work all the grunt work all of
- 00:11:01the sacrificing and all the discipline
- 00:11:03and accountability it takes to get there
- 00:11:05and then and once once you master all
- 00:11:07that and go and go through the process
- 00:11:10then then you can achieve high high
- 00:11:11performance so let's talk then about
- 00:11:13your journey with LeBron um uh there's a
- 00:11:16lovely line in your book where you say I
- 00:11:18could see he was a blank canvas with
- 00:11:20literally every paint color
- 00:11:23available so tell us about the day that
- 00:11:25you met LeBron James so we we when
- 00:11:29initially met in Orlando Florida you
- 00:11:31know I feela went to do the uh the NBA
- 00:11:33Summer League for the Cavaliers LeBron
- 00:11:35had just been drafted and we come in and
- 00:11:38to be honest guys I I I never knew who
- 00:11:41LeBron was until until right before I
- 00:11:43went to Summer League you know and a
- 00:11:45buddy of mine who follows you know the
- 00:11:46NBA kosi is oh you're going to work with
- 00:11:49the LeBron James I said oh the high
- 00:11:51school kid I said yeah yeah I think so
- 00:11:53and so uh you know all I knew he was
- 00:11:55this famous high school kid who was
- 00:11:56really really good and we were going to
- 00:11:58draft him I said okay cool you know I
- 00:12:00was just happy to be in the NBA and so I
- 00:12:02said okay if I meet him great if if not
- 00:12:05you know I just want to do a really
- 00:12:06really good job for the team and so we
- 00:12:08met and just he walked in the hotel room
- 00:12:13uh to do a little little treatment and
- 00:12:14therapy and he was I I was kind of taken
- 00:12:18back by him because he was he was for an
- 00:12:2018 19 year old kid he this huge kid and
- 00:12:23you know there's there's a lot of tall
- 00:12:25kids and you know tall guys that come
- 00:12:26into the NBA obviously but this guy was
- 00:12:28just massive just and well proportioned
- 00:12:31just shoulders his back and his his legs
- 00:12:34just really really proportional he walks
- 00:12:35in the door and I oh this guy's special
- 00:12:38this guy's pretty special oh this is
- 00:12:40this is the high school kid you know so
- 00:12:42okay you know here he is and uh you know
- 00:12:45just just very very business-like you
- 00:12:47know at 18 19 years old he was very very
- 00:12:49business-like and just he would talk
- 00:12:51about you know my body feels this right
- 00:12:54I think I need to do this tonight okay
- 00:12:56you know to to to help me get right uh
- 00:12:58but low lowkey you know just kind of
- 00:13:01very very professional so that that that
- 00:13:03was the very very first time that that
- 00:13:05that we met so physically he had
- 00:13:07everything oh yeah yeah yeah yeah he was
- 00:13:09he was just amazing what about mentally
- 00:13:11mentally um I I think he was getting
- 00:13:15there he was getting there you know he
- 00:13:16was still 18 19 years old like I said so
- 00:13:18he was still getting there he wasn't
- 00:13:20obviously you know the um you know the
- 00:13:22professional he is now or the
- 00:13:23professional he was 10 years ago you
- 00:13:25know he was still a kid you know in in
- 00:13:27in a man's world and trying to figure F
- 00:13:29this out and so you two what do you

- 00:13:33we clicked uh when I was when I when I
- 00:13:36got on the Cavaliers full-time during
- 00:13:38training camp is when I was doing some
- 00:13:40stretches and some Mobility work with
- 00:13:42some of the veterans on on the team and
- 00:13:44I can see him kind of looking and said
- 00:13:46hey you know he didn't know my name he
- 00:13:48said hey man you know show show me that
- 00:13:50exercise or what does that do what is
- 00:13:52that for very very inquisitive early on
- 00:13:55and so you know so we started to
- 00:13:57gravitate to toward each other and he
- 00:13:59said well how can we do this well you
- 00:14:01know this is for your back this is for
- 00:14:02your hips with you know which which in
- 00:14:04turn will help your legs and your ankle
- 00:14:06etc etc you know whatever the case may
- 00:14:08be he said okay okay I kind of like that
- 00:14:10stuff all right cool and then then we go
- 00:14:12off and practice and then every before
- 00:14:14every practice it started to like hey
- 00:14:16man you know let me get let me get that
- 00:14:18stretch you know hey man let's try that
- 00:14:20exercise and it was always hey man hey
- 00:14:23man and so finally he says uh it's Mike
- 00:14:25right say yeah Mike all right cool all
- 00:14:27right Mike let's do this let's do this
- 00:14:28and then finally the night before our
- 00:14:31home opener I think it was Halloween
- 00:14:332007 I believe he said uh what are you
- 00:14:36doing tonight that's nothing he goes
- 00:14:38well why don't you come to the house and
- 00:14:40we'll do some of these exercises uh at
- 00:14:43the house because I like the way I feel
- 00:14:45it's okay cool in preparation for the
- 00:14:47next day so his body his mind was
- 00:14:49already thinking yeah you know I need to
- 00:14:51do the extra work in order in order to
- 00:14:54to to get to where I want to be you know
- 00:14:56I need to do the extra work at night
- 00:14:58time a nighttime rout or something to
- 00:15:00kind of get me give me that edge and so
- 00:15:02I drove over to the over to the house
- 00:15:04and I think it was Halloween night like
- 00:15:06I said and uh you know he open the door
- 00:15:08he was dressed as Batman was he yeah he
- 00:15:11so this giant Batman you know opening
- 00:15:13the door Edge so uh and then you know he
- 00:15:17changes and we start doing all the
- 00:15:18stretches and stuff uh in front of about
- 00:15:2020 people at the house and they're W you
- 00:15:23know they're all looking at me with
- 00:15:24these eyes hey you know don't mess them
- 00:15:25up kid you know you know that's that's
- 00:15:27our guy you know but you know make sure
- 00:15:29you make sure you don't hurt him and so
- 00:15:31but that that became the routine the
- 00:15:33night before every game I would drive
- 00:15:34down to akan Ohio uh to his home and we
- 00:15:37do our exercises our stretching any
- 00:15:40icing or any little therapy if he has a
- 00:15:42little injury then we do that and then
- 00:15:44he hey want to stay for dinner and we
- 00:15:46would talk over dinner and that's when
- 00:15:47bronnie James was in a in in a high
- 00:15:50chair he was spoon feeding them now now
- 00:15:51he's in the NBA you know so it's been
- 00:15:55quite a journey but that that's been uh
- 00:15:57I remember those times were very very
- 00:15:59special yeah and I think you can read so
- 00:16:00much into the the mindset of of a young
- 00:16:02player that wanted to do that how many
- 00:16:04other players were asking you to go over
- 00:16:06the night before matches to the house
- 00:16:07and do all these extras with them oh I
- 00:16:09mean you know now you know that that the
- 00:16:11more and more the of these stories are
- 00:16:12out there you know you might get a
- 00:16:14handful now but then but well but then
- 00:16:16it was it was you know
- 00:16:19it was really unheard of there's a great
- 00:16:22line in your book game plan where you
- 00:16:24say mind first grind later correct tell
- 00:16:28us what that correct so you know I I
- 00:16:31believe when when when we heard we were
- 00:16:33talking about uh you know LeBron's
- 00:16:34LeBron and mik writing a book and and
- 00:16:36co-authoring a book together Etc you
- 00:16:38know everybody wanted oh what's the
- 00:16:39secret sauce what what are LeBron's
- 00:16:41workouts and what are all these things
- 00:16:43well we'll get to that later but before
- 00:16:46you before you you know you go through
- 00:16:48and become a high performer and to have
- 00:16:50high performance it starts with the mind
- 00:16:53all right so you need to have the mental
- 00:16:54War withal and the mental discipline to
- 00:16:58to do to do all the sacrificing and to
- 00:17:01do all the little all the little tidbits
- 00:17:03that uh that it takes to become great so
- 00:17:06you know we we we don't want to start
- 00:17:07with exercise we want to start with the
- 00:17:08mind and and and what what is the right
- 00:17:11mindset for greatness so for people that
- 00:17:14want to achieve greatness what is the
- 00:17:16right mindset how do we begin having
- 00:17:17that conversation number one you begin
- 00:17:19with a self assessment okay you're
- 00:17:21different I'm different LeBron James is
- 00:17:23different Michael Jordan is different
- 00:17:24everybody's different so what is high
- 00:17:26performance for you you know so the
- 00:17:29first thing you do
- 00:17:30is you know a SWAT analysis for yourself
- 00:17:34you know what are my strength weaknesses
- 00:17:35where do I want to be that that that's
- 00:17:37number one what what is high performance
- 00:17:39mean to me what is my goal why did I
- 00:17:41pick up this book all right why do I
- 00:17:43want to be we better so figure that part
- 00:17:45out first then then we could then we
- 00:17:47could dive in uh to okay all right start
- 00:17:50do by doing this eliminate this add this
- 00:17:52etc etc so a needs analysis is is is
- 00:17:56vital before before we do anything else
- 00:17:57and when you first had the anal with
- 00:17:59LeBron what what was the answer that the
- 00:18:00two of you came up with uh it it was it
- 00:18:03was uh number one he he wanted to be the
- 00:18:06greatest that that that was the you know
- 00:18:09that's that's the goal is to be the
- 00:18:11greatest ever and so okay well we we
- 00:18:14both know that that's going to take a
- 00:18:15ton of sacrifice commitment and you have
- 00:18:17to be able to play this game for a long
- 00:18:20period of time you know because I we
- 00:18:22both believe that greatness is measured
- 00:18:24by you know a handful of years greatness
- 00:18:27is you know can you sustain greatness
- 00:18:29and and that that that's for us that's
- 00:18:30the definition of of being great you
- 00:18:32know how long can you sustain this
- 00:18:34because it's not it's not always fun
- 00:18:35it's not always sexy you know it's uh it
- 00:18:38is a grind so if the first thing that we
- 00:18:40do is think about where we want to be
- 00:18:42what is the dream for us what's next
- 00:18:45because for 99.9% of people who are
- 00:18:47enjoying this conversation the answer is
- 00:18:49not going to be to be the greatest NBA
- 00:18:51player the world's ever seen it's going
- 00:18:52to be something very different yeah so
- 00:18:53what's the next what's the next step
- 00:18:55after doing that kind of self assessment
- 00:18:57if you like okay so uh the first step
- 00:19:00where do I want to be like we just
- 00:19:01talked about okay now where am I now you
- 00:19:04know what where what what am I now and
- 00:19:06what what is stopping me from from from
- 00:19:08getting there you know what what what
- 00:19:10steps am I what steps are hindering my
- 00:19:13my my process you know that that are
- 00:19:15getting in the way of you know for me to
- 00:19:17get to to get there and so you know you
- 00:19:20have to do uh you know you have to be
- 00:19:22real with yourself which I talk about in
- 00:19:24the book and just look at yourself in
- 00:19:25the mirror and say okay I I should be
- 00:19:27doing this I should be adding this I
- 00:19:28should omit this cuz you know the way
- 00:19:31that I that I eat the way the way that I
- 00:19:33move you know am I exercising and am I
- 00:19:35doing the right things am I networking
- 00:19:37the right way you know in business to
- 00:19:39get me you know that to to be CEO of my
- 00:19:41own company you know to etc etc and why
- 00:19:44is it so important to make sure that
- 00:19:45you're real with yourself well be
- 00:19:48because again we talked about sustain uh
- 00:19:50longevity and so you know a flash in a
- 00:19:54pan you know everyone can have a quick
- 00:19:56uh a great weekend and and close the
- 00:19:58deal but can you close multiple deals
- 00:20:00for a long period of time and so you're
- 00:20:03if you're not real with yourself then
- 00:20:05then you're your your success will be
- 00:20:08shortlived and when you looked at LeBron
- 00:20:10all those years ago and you'd made the
- 00:20:11plan you not be the greatest ever right
- 00:20:14where are you not delivering what
- 00:20:15answers did you come up with then I I
- 00:20:17believe with um we talked about what are
- 00:20:20we doing each and every day all right
- 00:20:22are are you are and how much are you
- 00:20:24actually taking care of your body what
- 00:20:26are you eating and so you know
- 00:20:29back then 1819 you know it was he would
- 00:20:31pick up uh you know fast food and and go
- 00:20:34to the arena eat eat some fast food in
- 00:20:36the locker room and then go out there
- 00:20:37and and score 20 30 points but you know
- 00:20:40but that was great back then and then
- 00:20:42but now now you know you can't you can't
- 00:20:45you can't get get get away with the with
- 00:20:47doing stuff like that anymore you know
- 00:20:49that was great when you're 1920 but in
- 00:20:51order to sustain a high performance that
- 00:20:53you you you're just going to be shooting
- 00:20:55yourself in the foot if you keep doing
- 00:20:56that okay so you've made the self
- 00:20:59assessment you've looked at where you're
- 00:21:01not quite delivering yes and you've
- 00:21:03worked out those areas to improve what's
- 00:21:05the next step after that the next step
- 00:21:07is and this is this is one that that
- 00:21:08gets a lot of folks is share your idea
- 00:21:13all right tell share your idea because
- 00:21:16um I believe and we believe and and the
- 00:21:18the proof is there that a group of
- 00:21:20people working to to accomplish a goal
- 00:21:23is much way more effective than just an
- 00:21:25individual trying to do by him or
- 00:21:27herself and so you want to share your
- 00:21:29idea share your plan talk to someone
- 00:21:31either a spouse a parent or a really
- 00:21:34really close friend that's going to help
- 00:21:36you to get there that's going to make
- 00:21:38you accountable we talked about earlier
- 00:21:40about LeBron and I challenging each
- 00:21:41other each and every day well it's easy
- 00:21:44because we're challenging each other you
- 00:21:46know to to be to to be the the best to
- 00:21:48be to be the greatest each and every day
- 00:21:50and so if you have someone along with
- 00:21:51you for the journey it's going to be a
- 00:21:53lot easier and you who else did you tell
- 00:21:56that this was your plan like did you go
- 00:21:58to the
- 00:21:59head coach of the Cavaliers at the time
- 00:22:00and say listen this guy wants to be the
- 00:22:02greatest NBA player of the world's ever
- 00:22:03seen you need to help us get there or
- 00:22:05yeah yeah yeah no you know it initially
- 00:22:07it was just he and I initially it was he
- 00:22:09and I you know I'm sure he he you know
- 00:22:11maybe he spoke to his mother or or spoke
- 00:22:14to to his spouse but um it was really
- 00:22:17just just just he and I early on and
- 00:22:20people around us didn't quite get you
- 00:22:22know why are these guys here you know
- 00:22:23four hours before the game you know why
- 00:22:26are these guys why is Mike driving to
- 00:22:27his house the night before a game
- 00:22:29you know what is that really doing for
- 00:22:30him you know why is he doing all these
- 00:22:32actual lifts why is he doing all what is
- 00:22:34that so a lot of people didn't
- 00:22:35understand what he and I were working on
- 00:22:38we're working on a project and a
- 00:22:39long-term project and when we still are
- 00:22:41you know 20 21 years 22 years later it's
- 00:22:44a great quote from Mark Weber the former
- 00:22:45Formula 1 driver I know you're into your
- 00:22:47Formula One yeah he said to us once on
- 00:22:49high performance average is easy that's
- 00:22:51why it's popular I love it absolutely
- 00:22:54but what's really interesting is you
- 00:22:55weren't doing the average there you
- 00:22:57weren't doing what was popular you were
- 00:22:58kind of outliers at this point oh yeah
- 00:23:00yeah at that particular time you know we
- 00:23:02were doing stuff that not a lot of folks
- 00:23:04were were were doing you know and and so
- 00:23:07it was extra time in the gym it was
- 00:23:08extra time in the weight room extra time
- 00:23:09in the in the at his home doing U you
- 00:23:12know therapy exercises you know crowd
- 00:23:14therapy Etc and also researching you
- 00:23:17know what what is this new modality
- 00:23:19about you know what are they doing in
- 00:23:20Europe you know what are they doing in U
- 00:23:23in in in football in rugby you know how
- 00:23:25can we how can we get some some of these
- 00:23:27ideas to help benefit us in what you
- 00:23:30know what we're trying to achieve and I
- 00:23:32understand why you would read a lot
- 00:23:33research a lot look at the latest um
- 00:23:36studies that are coming out of the world
- 00:23:38of you know biomechanics and Physiology
- 00:23:41and things was LeBron doing the same
- 00:23:44LeBron was doing the same from a
- 00:23:45basketball perspective and and from a
- 00:23:47business perspective you know he uh um
- 00:23:49if we're just talking about performance
- 00:23:51in in
- 00:23:52basketball I I I I can't you know
- 00:23:55promise you but I can I I can assure you
- 00:23:58that there's no one that has seen more
- 00:24:01tape or that that that studies uh more
- 00:24:04basketball games than than LeBron he
- 00:24:06he's really is a
- 00:24:08basketball Savant he's a basketball
- 00:24:10encyclopedia because he he he knows the
- 00:24:13offensive uh schemes he knows the
- 00:24:15defensive schemes of other teams of
- 00:24:16other players tendencies of other teams
- 00:24:19of other players of other coaches you
- 00:24:22know he will study he just he has done
- 00:24:24his homework for years now and he
- 00:24:26studies you know different tactics from
- 00:24:29not only players but from coaches as
- 00:24:31well would you would you tell us a story
- 00:24:32about the maybe the first time or one of
- 00:24:34the Early times you realized the the
- 00:24:36length that he's going to to understand
- 00:24:38the game of basketball and most
- 00:24:39importantly understand his opponents
- 00:24:41understand other coaches yeah well I
- 00:24:42mean I would I would be at the house and
- 00:24:45uh you know I would show up maybe half
- 00:24:46hour early before our before our
- 00:24:47treatment time and uh you know someone
- 00:24:50would open the door and you know where's
- 00:24:52he at oh he's he's in his office uh I
- 00:24:54don't know what he's doing so open the
- 00:24:56door knock and he's watching film he's
- 00:24:58watching film he's got his son with him
- 00:25:00uh he's got Bry Jr but he's you know
- 00:25:02he's tending to him but he's watching a
- 00:25:04game out on the west coast somewhere you
- 00:25:06know like uh I don't know the Lakers are
- 00:25:09playing the you know Utah Jazz or
- 00:25:11something just a random game that night
- 00:25:13but he's studying it he's watching
- 00:25:15because because we're playing Utah you
- 00:25:17know in three nights so he's already
- 00:25:18scouting he's already doing his homework
- 00:25:21uh another thing is you know we'll be
- 00:25:23doing we'll be doing therapy and
- 00:25:25treatment I got him on the treatment
- 00:25:26table table and he's watching games on
- 00:25:29his iPad you know he's he's watching
- 00:25:30games because uh you know we have a game
- 00:25:33in again in two three days so he was
- 00:25:34doing that 20 years ago he's still doing
- 00:25:37that now so nothing has changed so it's
- 00:25:41he's still prepping man yeah and and how
- 00:25:44I suppose what I'd be wondering if I was
- 00:25:46him and you like is what we're doing the
- 00:25:48right thing and I think often that
- 00:25:50derails a lot of people because it takes
- 00:25:51time for the evidence to become clear
- 00:25:54yes so how did you know that the extra
- 00:25:56work you were doing was going to pay off
- 00:25:57you know how did LeBron know that
- 00:25:59watching all these games or doing these
- 00:26:00extra sessions with you the night before
- 00:26:02was actually going to make a difference
- 00:26:03yeah yeah you know it it initially it
- 00:26:06was a little trial trial and error you
- 00:26:08know like like like like most things in
- 00:26:10its uh in their infancy are so it it was
- 00:26:12a lot of trial and error early on but at
- 00:26:15the end of the day you know it could
- 00:26:17only make you better if you do if you do
- 00:26:19if you do if you sacrifice if you add
- 00:26:21things that that'll make you feel better
- 00:26:23that that are healthier for you at the
- 00:26:25end of the day you're just going to get
- 00:26:26more positive results and so with him it
- 00:26:28was yeah it's trial and error but it's
- 00:26:31you know what um mentally it's an
- 00:26:34advantage already over your opponent
- 00:26:36because you come to the game way more
- 00:26:38prepared than than than uh than your
- 00:26:40opponent because you know you've been
- 00:26:41doing stuff the night before to prep you
- 00:26:43for tonight so how much of LeBron's
- 00:26:46success do you think is raw talent and
- 00:26:49how much do you think it's down to this
- 00:26:50work ethic I believe it's gosh if I had
- 00:26:54to put a number on it I'd
- 00:26:56say 65% of it is just raw talent but but
- 00:27:00the other percentage is just how much he
- 00:27:03dedicates himself to his craft Yeah man
- 00:27:06so inspiring though for the two of you
- 00:27:08to keep on lifting each other up all the
- 00:27:09time and be this kind of oh yeah I
- 00:27:11almost look at it as like a cool little
- 00:27:12gang that no one else knows you're in
- 00:27:13where you've got this plan to be the
- 00:27:14greatest in the world and you're doing
- 00:27:16all of this what was secret work it's
- 00:27:18not so secret now cuz you're telling us
- 00:27:19about it but it must have been such an
- 00:27:21exciting time to try and build this guy
- 00:27:24it's uh you know like I like I mentioned
- 00:27:26the book it was it was this blank canas
- 00:27:28and and uh for him to to acknowledge you
- 00:27:30know what I want to be the greatest and
- 00:27:32um you know K you know can can we go on
- 00:27:35on the journey together let's go and so
- 00:27:38it was uh it's funny we we we we didn't
- 00:27:41celebrate too much you know some of the
- 00:27:43big accomplishments he because for us it
- 00:27:45was just part of the journey it's part
- 00:27:47of where we want to be so it's not like
- 00:27:49we we you know we're MVP one year and
- 00:27:52went out and had this huge party it was
- 00:27:54just okay this is part of where you want
- 00:27:56to be even even now you know 20 years 20
- 00:27:58years in he's he's he's the longer he's
- 00:28:01done it he's you know every every other
- 00:28:02game like he's breaking a record you
- 00:28:04know at most points or most this or most
- 00:28:06most games played or most minutes and or
- 00:28:08this and that or the oldest to be this
- 00:28:10or you know he was the youngest to
- 00:28:11achieve things now he's the oldest to
- 00:28:12achieve things and so every other game
- 00:28:15you know we're we're um they're
- 00:28:16acknowledging him but it does not it
- 00:28:19doesn't change his um his his
- 00:28:21preparation or or or My preparation or
- 00:28:23our mentality we we had a conversation a
- 00:28:25few weeks ago um it was it was a little
- 00:28:28before the Olympics and he had just won
- 00:28:30this great award or or what have you and
- 00:28:33he said you know I really don't even
- 00:28:35think about it anymore because it's part
- 00:28:37it's still part of the journey you know
- 00:28:39maybe one day after I'm done I'll go
- 00:28:41back and say oh yeah I did that oh yeah
- 00:28:43I did that but right now it's not really
- 00:28:46it's not really phasing him right now so
- 00:28:48when he won his first title right yeah
- 00:28:51that wasn't I've achieved everything I
- 00:28:52wanted to achieve um it it was for for a
- 00:28:55brief second it was for for that for
- 00:28:57that you know yeah we did celebrate but
- 00:29:00but then it became well I got to do this
- 00:29:02again if I want to be considered the
- 00:29:04greatest I got to do this multiple times
- 00:29:07you know it can just be like I said you
- 00:29:08know you know I'll win it once and then
- 00:29:11you know right off the sunset and I've
- 00:29:12done it yeah I've had a hell of a hell
- 00:29:14of a career no this is I need to be
- 00:29:16doing this more often now you know in
- 00:29:19order for me to be in those
- 00:29:20conversations you know as the greatest
- 00:29:21ever doing and we're having this
- 00:29:23conversation just a few days after the
- 00:29:25Olympics has happened in yes in Paris
- 00:29:27I'd love an into what LeBron james'
- 00:29:29mindset is like at an Olympic Games at
- 00:29:32this stage because there's part of me
- 00:29:34that thinks well he's achieved
- 00:29:35everything there is to achieve in the
- 00:29:36game surely he just goes to France and
- 00:29:37looks to enjoy himself now no well uh
- 00:29:41initially that that was kind of the the
- 00:29:43thinking you know we we had a meeting
- 00:29:45during during the season and he says you
- 00:29:47know what Mike I'm not gonna I'm not
- 00:29:49going to be doing much I'm I'm not going
- 00:29:50to be playing much you know I'm gonna
- 00:29:51let some of the young guys you know get
- 00:29:53get get some more experience stuff and I
- 00:29:55said okay well me knowing you
- 00:29:58we'll we'll we'll see if that if that if
- 00:30:00that holds true uh cuz I knew you know
- 00:30:02once once uh you know the game started
- 00:30:05that that was not going to be the case
- 00:30:06and so sure enough you know he wanted to
- 00:30:08set the tone early his he had a mind
- 00:30:10shift change and you say you know what
- 00:30:12he he he took inventory of the team
- 00:30:15around him and uh how much experience
- 00:30:17they had you know in in in um with feeba
- 00:30:20Etc and so he said well I still have to
- 00:30:23set the tone until from day one we were
- 00:30:25in Las Vegas having training camp and he
- 00:30:27was was first one in the weight room
- 00:30:30first guy up you know at you know 7:30
- 00:30:32in the morning he's out there lifting
- 00:30:33weights in the hotel and um first one to
- 00:30:37breakfast first one to uh you know for
- 00:30:39for therapy for stretching Etc and then
- 00:30:42first one in the layup line in the
- 00:30:43warm-up line and just setting the tone
- 00:30:46early and I said okay this guy's not
- 00:30:47here just to hang out you know this
- 00:30:49guy's going to be you know a true leader
- 00:30:52and so and he end he end up being the
- 00:30:54most valuable player for for for all of
- 00:30:57uh the you know the Olympic basketball
- 00:31:00games I'm going to tell you a secret

- 00:32:40because I think that I you know I spend
- 00:32:42a lot of time giving advice to people
- 00:32:43that tell me they want to work in the TV
- 00:32:46industry right yeah or they want to be a
- 00:32:48set up a podcast or be a broadcaster or
- 00:32:50something yeah and then very quickly you
- 00:32:53give them a bit of advice or you share
- 00:32:54one or two things with them and then you
- 00:32:55see the behavior doesn't change they
- 00:32:57don't come for any more there's and you
- 00:32:59kind of think God kind of a waste of
- 00:33:01that meeting that nothing happened and I
- 00:33:04can understand how LeBron would be
- 00:33:05almost looking to them to say well if
- 00:33:07you want this you can have this but
- 00:33:08absolutely you have to show me that you
- 00:33:10want this is that fair yeah absolutely
- 00:33:12yeah you then you hit the nail on the
- 00:33:14head it was if that individual doesn't
- 00:33:16take ownership in the process like he
- 00:33:18did when he was 19 then you know good
- 00:33:22luck to you I'm sure you'll have a great
- 00:33:23career but you know you know when I knew
- 00:33:26we were having this conversation was
- 00:33:28thinking of a bit of footage I watched
- 00:33:30quite a few years ago of LeBron and he
- 00:33:31was walking off a court and I don't know
- 00:33:34enough to tell you the the game or the
- 00:33:35court or where he was but it was a fan
- 00:33:38filming on their phone and they just
- 00:33:39said LeBron how do you keep doing it and
- 00:33:42he just went
- 00:33:43intention and carried on walking and I
- 00:33:46remember thinking I don't really
- 00:33:47understand quite what he is saying there
- 00:33:49yeah I'd love you to explain that well
- 00:33:51that that that uh that that intention
- 00:33:53started again when he was when it was 19
- 00:33:5620 years old being
- 00:33:58I want to be the greatest and so I know
- 00:34:02that I have to sacrifice each and every
- 00:34:04day and so you know the fan asked him
- 00:34:06you know how how do you keep doing it
- 00:34:08how you keep doing it well because that
- 00:34:11that's my intention is to be the
- 00:34:12greatest and so every day I know I have
- 00:34:15to sacrifice every day I know I have to
- 00:34:17do things that that aren't comfortable
- 00:34:20that that aren't always fun and exciting
- 00:34:22and do do the things that that most
- 00:34:24people aren't doing so intention then is
- 00:34:27quite quite powerful because it informs
- 00:34:28every every Behavior I believe so yes
- 00:34:32yeah and how do we all get to a point
- 00:34:34where we can live with intention what
- 00:34:35questions should we be asking ourselves
- 00:34:37how should we be operating if we want to
- 00:34:39if we want to have this intentional
- 00:34:41lifestyle how does it feel what do we do
- 00:34:43well you really again you just have to
- 00:34:45take take ownership in in in your
- 00:34:47decision-making and and be okay with not
- 00:34:51being the most popular be okay with not
- 00:34:53with not being being a little separate
- 00:34:56and being um
- 00:34:58not not a recluse but uh you know being
- 00:35:00being away from the group you know
- 00:35:02because uh the sacrific that that you
- 00:35:04have to do you know aren't always
- 00:35:06popular the decisions aren't always
- 00:35:08popular within within a group and so you
- 00:35:10have to be okay with just setting your
- 00:35:12own path by yourself could you explain
- 00:35:14to us or share with us a time when a
- 00:35:16decision that you and LeBron have come
- 00:35:18to isn't popular with the group and
- 00:35:19you've had to just stick to your guns to
- 00:35:21get it
- 00:35:24through I believe leaving Cleveland for
- 00:35:27the first time time that that that was
- 00:35:30as you know as the world knows now you
- 00:35:31know that was very was a very unpopular
- 00:35:33thing to do but it's something that he
- 00:35:35needed to do for himself was for and for
- 00:35:37his journey because he needed to
- 00:35:39challenge himself get away from home if
- 00:35:41you will uh compared to to to to a young
- 00:35:45man or a young girl leaving leaving
- 00:35:47school to go to college you know they go
- 00:35:49to college for four years you know to
- 00:35:51grow up you know to gain accountability
- 00:35:53to to to kind of be self-sustainable for
- 00:35:55a minute uh and and and see you mature
- 00:35:57and see you grow up so for for him he
- 00:36:00needed to leave home you know he got
- 00:36:02drafted you know from with the Cavaliers
- 00:36:04and he grew up you know 45 minutes away
- 00:36:06from the city so you know he never
- 00:36:07really left home and so this was that
- 00:36:09experience for him to grow up and when
- 00:36:11was the first time you had a
- 00:36:12conversation with him where he was
- 00:36:13thinking maybe I need something new in
- 00:36:15my life it was probably a couple weeks
- 00:36:17before he made the decision so that was
- 00:36:20quick yeah you know it was um I think he
- 00:36:23he was thinking about it you know you
- 00:36:26know throughout the season is weighing
- 00:36:28weighing all his options talking talking
- 00:36:30to his you know his his close friends
- 00:36:32close family um but uh when he and I
- 00:36:35first had first had the conversation of
- 00:36:37hey you know what I I could be leaving
- 00:36:40here you know and I I may need that uh
- 00:36:43it was probably about a week a week or
- 00:36:47two before the actual decision was made
- 00:36:48and what does he look for from you in
- 00:36:50that situation when he's trying to come
- 00:36:52to a decision what are the questions he
- 00:36:53asks you uh you know he he'll he'll ask
- 00:36:55for for my opinion on on on on on
- 00:36:57certain matters now it's changed now he
- 00:36:59has wife grownup kids you know so he has
- 00:37:02that ecosystem but early on in his
- 00:37:04career he kind of had uh you know just
- 00:37:06kind of a small group or a small circle
- 00:37:09and so back then it was what do you
- 00:37:11think of this you know what what what
- 00:37:13would you do about this and and and so
- 00:37:16we would um communicate a lot on on on
- 00:37:18certain things like that but now you
- 00:37:20know he's got his wife he's got his
- 00:37:21family now now all all decisions go go
- 00:37:23go through the prop the proper channels
- 00:37:26he knows what he needs to do yes and
- 00:37:29when he makes a decision with intention
- 00:37:31which is really important and he does
- 00:37:33get the criticism and you know he was
- 00:37:34being booed by fans it was it was it was
- 00:37:37a big period in his life yes how does he
- 00:37:40deal with that
- 00:37:42psychologically I think it just really
- 00:37:44fuels him it just really fuels him but
- 00:37:47also it's it's more pressure on him to
- 00:37:50to make sure that this
- 00:37:51decision you know he has to make the
- 00:37:54decision the right decision you know
- 00:37:56when you come to to a um to a Forin Road
- 00:37:59you take
- 00:38:00it so how how do we do that in our own
- 00:38:03lives well you really again be be
- 00:38:05intentional okay you know you know where
- 00:38:07you want to be you know so goal setting
- 00:38:10is number one like like like we we
- 00:38:12discussed earlier goal goal setting is
- 00:38:14number one uh and making sure that
- 00:38:17that's where you want to be are you sure
- 00:38:20you want to you want you want to get
- 00:38:21there and do that and why do you want to
- 00:38:24do that okay cool if if that's where you
- 00:38:26want to be and you know that's that's
- 00:38:27your goal okay then every decision again
- 00:38:30that you make has has to help you along
- 00:38:33the way and it's not going to be like
- 00:38:34ear it's it's not going to be popular
- 00:38:36but you just you have you have to live
- 00:38:38with it because you know that that's
- 00:38:40going to help you achieve your goal how
- 00:38:42does how does LeBron work with you to
- 00:38:44deal with failure to deal with setbacks
- 00:38:46to deal with getting things wrong um I I
- 00:38:50think he's very accountable you know if
- 00:38:53if we messed up on on something okay
- 00:38:55we'll we'll discuss it briefly yeah okay
- 00:38:58we learn from it and we move on you know
- 00:39:02very rarely does he just um just Linger
- 00:39:06on oh I made a bad decision and I don't
- 00:39:08know if that's the right you know he
- 00:39:09doesn't Mill around you know it's it's
- 00:39:12an explay mentality as far as he and I I
- 00:39:15I think you know from doing a different
- 00:39:18exercise routine or different Mobility
- 00:39:21routine or something you know that that
- 00:39:23didn't quite feel right okay M you know
- 00:39:25and and I didn't really move well all
- 00:39:26right cool we know we we tried it
- 00:39:28together we're done let's move on next
- 00:39:30we live and learn and we move on I want
- 00:39:33to talk to you about the rules of
- 00:39:35regimen MH would you first of all
- 00:39:37explain what they are to the audience or
- 00:39:39describe what we mean by rules of
- 00:39:41regimen it all it all goes goes back to
- 00:39:43goal setting and that that's something
- 00:39:45that cannot sway you know depending on
- 00:39:48the day and so you know you establish
- 00:39:50your own recipe your own regimen for for
- 00:39:53success and
- 00:39:54so again it's all about account ility
- 00:39:57accountability so you know you set your
- 00:39:59own rules up for what what you want to
- 00:40:02become and uh it's an everyday Journey
- 00:40:05okay so I want to talk to you about a
- 00:40:07couple of the key things that I think
- 00:40:08really stand out in your book that will
- 00:40:10have a big impact on people the first
- 00:40:12one is nutrition you know we've all
- 00:40:14heard the phrase you can't outtrain a
- 00:40:16bad diet yes so from all the work that
- 00:40:18you've you and LeBron have done together
- 00:40:20what does a what does a good diet look
- 00:40:22like uh balanced a balanced diet you
- 00:40:26know and then again
- 00:40:28all all all goes back to what your goal
- 00:40:30is yeah you know uh you know what works
- 00:40:33for for me may not work for for the next
- 00:40:35individual Etc but whatever your goal
- 00:40:37what what do you want to achieve okay so
- 00:40:39say say you want to I lose 10 pounds and
- 00:40:42and and uh you know be more toned Etc
- 00:40:44well you know you got to you got to eat
- 00:40:46more protein okay you know you got to
- 00:40:47cut out some of the fast foods you know
- 00:40:49you got to come out some of the soft
- 00:40:50drinks you know that's all basic things
- 00:40:52so just stay balanced in what you're
- 00:40:53doing you know more and just make Common
- 00:40:56Sense decisions
- 00:40:57what does a a day's nutrition look like
- 00:40:59for someone like LeBron for someone like
- 00:41:01um like LJ you know it's a it's a heavy
- 00:41:05breakfast you know during the season
- 00:41:07it's a heavy breakfast because he's
- 00:41:08going to need those calories he's going
- 00:41:09to need those calories come 7 o'clock 8
- 00:41:11o'clock at night and so it's a heavy
- 00:41:13breakfast and his Chef does an amazing
- 00:41:15job she she's wonderful um you know of
- 00:41:17of uh it's more high protein also eggs
- 00:41:20uh lots of eggs you know some some some
- 00:41:23turkey bacon Etc um you know don't be
- 00:41:25afraid to sprinkle in a couple you know
- 00:41:27small pancakes in there as well you know
- 00:41:29you know you need those carbohydrates
- 00:41:30and you need to feel good about what
- 00:41:32what you're eating you know reward
- 00:41:33yourself because you know you just had 8
- 00:41:35to 10 hours of sleep you know you're
- 00:41:36well hydrated you know you've worked out
- 00:41:39the night before and you know you're
- 00:41:40going to burn that uh that that night as
- 00:41:42well because you you're about to play 40
- 00:41:44minutes a night but it's a ton of
- 00:41:45hydration you know he carries around um
- 00:41:48a gallon of uh you know the giant jug of
- 00:41:51water that that that's that's one gallon
- 00:41:53he carries around everywhere he goes he
- 00:41:55has a couple of those every day really
- 00:41:57oh yeah why is that so important well
- 00:41:59it's just hydration hydration is key for
- 00:42:02obviously preventing um failure on the
- 00:42:05court you know failure can mean um
- 00:42:07fatigue failure can mean muscle cramping
- 00:42:10um or just lack of focus you know from
- 00:42:13being uh dehydrated uh so it being
- 00:42:16dehydrated can really really play play a
- 00:42:18key role in uh in in why you why you
- 00:42:22would lose a game or why your
- 00:42:23performance can be can um you know can
- 00:42:25be a failure and is it the same for for
- 00:42:27you and I for you know Ben who's in the
- 00:42:29corner recording this conversation like
- 00:42:31do we all need to pay particular Focus
- 00:42:33to that to our we we all need to H I
- 00:42:36would say at least a gallon a day at
- 00:42:38least a gallon a day um in order for our
- 00:42:41um for our our digestive you know our
- 00:42:43digestive system to work functionally
- 00:42:46and um and for again hydration muscle
- 00:42:49cramping and just overall Clarity you
- 00:42:52know you you you you you'll be amazed of
- 00:42:54how uh how clear your mind thinks when
- 00:42:57when you're well hydrated and you also
- 00:42:59talk in your book about scoring our
- 00:43:00meals yeah again this is about living
- 00:43:03intentionally thinking ABS about the
- 00:43:05things that are going into our body so
- 00:43:07how how should someone go about scoring
- 00:43:09their meals for the first time how do we
- 00:43:10do that I would say um is your plate
- 00:43:13well balanced okay you know the more
- 00:43:16balanced it is the higher the score if
- 00:43:18it's just all pancakes well you're going
- 00:43:19to have a low have a low score you know
- 00:43:23do do you have an element of fruit do
- 00:43:25you have an element of veggies do you
- 00:43:26have you know how is your protein over
- 00:43:29uh is your protein heavier than your
- 00:43:31carbohydrate intake well then you know
- 00:43:33then that that would be a a really high
- 00:43:35high scoring uh meal you know if it's uh
- 00:43:38if it's more more protein okay that's
- 00:43:40great but you know you need some fruits
- 00:43:42and veggies as well so is LeBron going
- 00:43:44through life like this sort of always
- 00:43:46reviewing was that the best I could do
- 00:43:49in that training session was that the
- 00:43:50best meal I could eat was that the best
- 00:43:52sleep I could get was that the best
- 00:43:54hydration I could deal with was that the
- 00:43:56best nutrition was that the best
- 00:43:57conversation with my coach yes he is but
- 00:43:59he's not taking time right right as soon
- 00:44:02as he's done to sit and and go over
- 00:44:04everything he's he's he's again it's
- 00:44:07it's all overlapping and so before he
- 00:44:09gets on the court he's reviewing what we
- 00:44:11just did in the waight room you know was
- 00:44:12that exercise beneficial was was this
- 00:44:14you know how was that how was that going
- 00:44:16but part of that is is my job as well
- 00:44:18you know making sure that he's doing the
- 00:44:19right things in the weight room the
- 00:44:21right the right exercise routine you
- 00:44:22know so what we do in the weight room
- 00:44:24will enhance what he's doing on the
- 00:44:25basketball court you mentioned about
- 00:44:27recovery quite a few times yes where on
- 00:44:30the list of the most important things to
- 00:44:32get us to our own version of high
- 00:44:33performance sits recovery you know it's
- 00:44:36it's mindset number one mental awareness
- 00:44:38mindset it's uh nutrition it's Mobility
- 00:44:43exercising and then it's recovery so how
- 00:44:45do all of us go about improving our
- 00:44:47recovery what are the steps we can take
- 00:44:49right now to make our recovery better
- 00:44:52okay this this is now um um assuming
- 00:44:55that that you have your road map already
- 00:44:57res set you have your road map you have
- 00:44:58your goal already and so um you know
- 00:45:02let's say the goal is to run a marathon
- 00:45:04and so um today I I really you know I I
- 00:45:06ran 15 miles today well what what was my
- 00:45:10goal tomorrow you know so so Bas based
- 00:45:12on on your goal based on your plan um
- 00:45:16how how can you be best suited to to run
- 00:45:20either to run the next day or or is next
- 00:45:22day recovery day or is next day uh
- 00:45:24session in the weight room what can you
- 00:45:26do right after you're done in order to
- 00:45:28to to make sure that you're ready for
- 00:45:30the next day uh you know to to to
- 00:45:32perform at your maximum and what are the
- 00:45:35what are the things that we should do I
- 00:45:37mean from from making sure you're well
- 00:45:38hydrated making sure you know all goes
- 00:45:40back to that recipe of hydration
- 00:45:42utrition Mobility you know how how how
- 00:45:45mobile are you you know are you doing
- 00:45:46your stretches are you doing the
- 00:45:48mobility work are you doing some of the
- 00:45:50small difference makers what I'm talk
- 00:45:51about in my book uh difference makers
- 00:45:53are these small minimal exercises that
- 00:45:56you can do throughout the day to help
- 00:45:57strengthen your joints you know are you
- 00:45:59are you doing that are you getting
- 00:46:00enough rest and
- 00:46:02sleep how do we improve our
- 00:46:05sleep I I would say um by by shutting
- 00:46:09shutting off your uh your phones or your
- 00:46:11iPads you know but an hour an hour
- 00:46:14before you uh you know you plan on
- 00:46:16sleeping you know and and just work
- 00:46:18backwards if you know you have meeting
- 00:46:19at at 9:00 a.m. okay
- 00:46:22well make sure you have eight hours of
- 00:46:25of of sleep like locked in there make
- 00:46:27sure you give yourself you know uh time
- 00:46:28in the morning to do a little Mobility
- 00:46:3015 minutes if you will uh and and
- 00:46:33however long you need to eat something
- 00:46:34and so work backwards in order for you
- 00:46:37to to help prepare you for for the next
- 00:46:40day and there's a few things you
- 00:46:41mentioned in your book that I just want
- 00:46:43to pick up on at bedtime you talk about
- 00:46:45the importance of magnesium yes what
- 00:46:47does that do for us it just really
- 00:46:49relaxes and and um really Cal calms your
- 00:46:53muscles calms your body calms your um
- 00:46:56your your your brain a little bit it
- 00:46:57really puts you in a nice sense of um
- 00:47:01relaxation and I've heard a lot of
- 00:47:03people talk about magnesium I've not had
- 00:47:05very many people talk about 6 to eight
- 00:47:06ounces of tart cherry juice M talk to me
- 00:47:10about the importance of cherry juice
- 00:47:11before tart cherry juice definitely can
- 00:47:14be a a uh a sleep aid it helps with um
- 00:47:18you know as an
- 00:47:19anti-inflammatory um medicine if you
- 00:47:21will but you know it's all natural it's
- 00:47:23all T tart cherries and so that's
- 00:47:25something that's a concoction that we
- 00:47:26use on the road is tarte cherry juice
- 00:47:29with some magnesium as well in order for
- 00:47:32you just especially after games just to
- 00:47:33kind of relax you and and go to sleep
- 00:47:36you know naturally without the you know
- 00:47:39without the the melatonins and all this
- 00:47:40other stuff out there so that's what
- 00:47:42LeBron's taking after a game to take
- 00:47:44bring himself into on on summer most
- 00:47:46days yes when he's busy yeah um you also
- 00:47:48talk about the room being completely
- 00:47:50black and lowering the temperature why
- 00:47:52is a completely black room important
- 00:47:55well it it minim it minimizes
- 00:47:57distractions so so the the eyes play
- 00:47:59play a key role in in in in you you know
- 00:48:01falling asleep and shutting off the
- 00:48:03brain you know getting yourself in a
- 00:48:04morbid relaxed State that's why you know
- 00:48:06phones are so phones are a major
- 00:48:09detriment you know to to to sleeping you
- 00:48:11know we all love to scroll you know
- 00:48:13right before bed etc you know get back
- 00:48:14our text messages and our emails but uh
- 00:48:17the more we can shut off light
- 00:48:19especially artificial light you know
- 00:48:21before bed the more the more relaxed
- 00:48:23you're going to have and a deeper sleep
- 00:48:25you're going to get well love about this
- 00:48:27conversation is is not that we're
- 00:48:28talking about a year of success or 18
- 00:48:31months or two years of success it's
- 00:48:33about longevity I think the true high
- 00:48:35performance is being able to do
- 00:48:36something and then being able to sustain
- 00:48:38that thing and I was just I was you
- 00:48:41reading in my research for this that
- 00:48:42LeBron is the last player of his draft
- 00:48:45season to remain in the NBA yes that's
- 00:48:47out of 58 players half of the players
- 00:48:51drafted when he was drafted didn't make
- 00:48:53it past five years that's that's that's
- 00:48:56an amazing stat you guys have just
- 00:48:58finished the year 21 yes so what would
- 00:49:01you share with us is the secret to
- 00:49:03LeBron's
- 00:49:05longevity daily
- 00:49:07accountability the decisions you make
- 00:49:09each and every day uh will affect you in
- 00:49:12the long run yeah and so if you make the
- 00:49:14the right decisions for most of those
- 00:49:16days and obviously we're talking about
- 00:49:17you know we're not robots but uh you
- 00:49:20know if you make those decisions and
- 00:49:22have the right people around you is also
- 00:49:24is also another one have the right
- 00:49:25people around you
- 00:49:27then that's going to lead you know to to
- 00:49:30whatever your your goal may be yeah you
- 00:49:32know that's going to help you achieve
- 00:49:33whatever goal that that you set out for
- 00:49:35yourself and what I think that you can't
- 00:49:37say often enough is having the having
- 00:49:40the thing the moment is here and too
- 00:49:42many people may be focus on this is what
- 00:49:44I want but they don't take it right back
- 00:49:46to here yeah which is which is the work
- 00:49:49right at the very beginning yes yes
- 00:49:51doing the ground work MH um we've talked
- 00:49:54about evolving and learning
- 00:49:57I'd love to know not just you know we've
- 00:49:59spoken about how LeBron deals with
- 00:50:01setbacks and issues and things that have
- 00:50:03gone wrong what about dealing with
- 00:50:04success how how has he not got to the
- 00:50:07point where he's won his first title or
- 00:50:10he's had his first big moment of success
- 00:50:12or he's got his first million in the
- 00:50:13bank and then he's taken his foot off
- 00:50:16the gas how's that not happened how has
- 00:50:18he kept on going for all this time the
- 00:50:21early starts pushing his body the
- 00:50:23sacrifices of not seeing his family the
- 00:50:25the constant need to be the best well it
- 00:50:28it it all stems from from that decision
- 00:50:30that that one decision that that he made
- 00:50:33he he now has to live with and that
- 00:50:36decision is to be the greatest and and
- 00:50:38so you need it's still not done so you
- 00:50:41know everyone expects him to to take his
- 00:50:43foot off the gas but you know you're
- 00:50:45you're here to show people what what
- 00:50:48they haven't seen yet yeah like like
- 00:50:51nothing they've ever seen before and so
- 00:50:53that that's on his mind I'm I'm still
- 00:50:55playing I'm still working hard cuz I'm
- 00:50:57still showing people something that
- 00:50:58they've never seen before what's the
- 00:51:00thing that he's done in all of your time
- 00:51:01working together that's taking your
- 00:51:03breath away that's amazed you the
- 00:51:06most his uh his humility his humility um
- 00:51:11amongst all all of the success that he's
- 00:51:12had he's still you know very much a a
- 00:51:15dad at the end of the day you know he's
- 00:51:18still he's still very much a family man
- 00:51:19so you know sometimes with uh with
- 00:51:22success you kind of you put that off to
- 00:51:24the side a bit and and you and come back
- 00:51:27and and haunt you but you know he's
- 00:51:29still dead does he not feel he's the
- 00:51:31best
- 00:51:32already he he might but uh you know it's
- 00:51:36not stopping his uh his drive you know
- 00:51:39is definitely it's not stopping his
- 00:51:40Drive he's he's here to to again to to
- 00:51:43show folks that you know yeah you can
- 00:51:46you can achieve greatness you know at
- 00:51:47whatever age but and and I'm here you
- 00:51:50know on the show to tell you that it's
- 00:51:52it's not easy it's not easy and there's
- 00:51:55a reason why only
- 00:51:571% of people are
- 00:51:59really true high performance uh true
- 00:52:02High performers they can do this for
- 00:52:04long period of time what are the hardest
- 00:52:07parts of it the sacrifice the sacrifice
- 00:52:11of uh especially if you're a family man
- 00:52:13you know you're you're and and I go
- 00:52:14through it as well you know you
- 00:52:16sacrifice family time you sacrifice
- 00:52:17family loved ones um but if that's your
- 00:52:21goal that's what you set out to do and
- 00:52:23you've shared your goals with with your
- 00:52:25family if you shared your goals with
- 00:52:27loved ones and they're all helping to do
- 00:52:29it well you know hopefully they they
- 00:52:32they understand and neither of you have
- 00:52:34ever got sick of each other you've
- 00:52:35enjoyed each other's company all this
- 00:52:36time oh we we get sick of each other all
- 00:52:38the time do you yeah all the time you
- 00:52:40know we we there's there's times
- 00:52:43especially during the middle middle of
- 00:52:44the Season we're like oh gosh you know I
- 00:52:46got I have to see Mike again oh yeah
- 00:52:48well you know you're no picnic either
- 00:52:50pal you know after after 20 years of of
- 00:52:53uh seeing each other you know for for
- 00:52:55for all this time but we we know what
- 00:52:57the journey is we we know what the goal
- 00:52:59is and that that's to be the greatest
- 00:53:01and how far and Advance did the two of
- 00:53:03you plan like what does what does
- 00:53:05planning look like for you I I will plan
- 00:53:08stuff for him as far as performance-
- 00:53:10wise um a couple of weeks in advance
- 00:53:13because this is the NBA this this is you
- 00:53:17know some nights you can play you know
- 00:53:1932 minutes a game okay great you know in
- 00:53:21one game next night we can go to double
- 00:53:23overtime so I don't want to play too far
- 00:53:25ahead
- 00:53:27because the uncertainty of the game we
- 00:53:30know we know we know what the game
- 00:53:31schedule is you know that comes out you
- 00:53:32know in August but it's you know we
- 00:53:35don't know what the game itself would
- 00:53:36look like it's going to be a double
- 00:53:37overtime is it going to be you know an
- 00:53:39easy game for him so and so uh I need to
- 00:53:42plan at the most a couple weeks in
- 00:53:44advance knowing that things can change
- 00:53:47you've worked with some other incredible
- 00:53:49athes as well you know obviously we
- 00:53:50spoken a lot about LeBron yes tell us
- 00:53:53some of the other greates that you've
- 00:53:55you've coached and worked with I had a
- 00:53:57chance early on when I was in Miami to
- 00:53:58work with Rory melroy who was just
- 00:54:01amazing an amazing individual very very
- 00:54:04focused you know we first um uh came
- 00:54:08together through m a mutual friend and
- 00:54:10his his goals were very very much the
- 00:54:12same you know I I want to be the
- 00:54:14greatest I want to do this you know and
- 00:54:17and so um you know we we talked about uh
- 00:54:20you know kind of the mindset number one
- 00:54:22and then doing some of the little things
- 00:54:24uh do doing all the prep work etc and
- 00:54:26then it and then um recently I guess
- 00:54:28about three years ago now um I was
- 00:54:31introduced to Miles Garrett uh Cleveland
- 00:54:33Cleveland Browns player uh who's just an
- 00:54:36awesome individual just a very very
- 00:54:38special individual and and uh I love him
- 00:54:40to death he's a he's just a phenomenal
- 00:54:42person and one heck of an athlete I mean
- 00:54:46you know we've all seen the highlights
- 00:54:47and whatever and so we started our our
- 00:54:50our process and he said could you
- 00:54:52oversee some of the stuff that I'm doing
- 00:54:54or could you could we put a team
- 00:54:55together around me you know we we all
- 00:54:58know you're busy with the with LJ
- 00:55:00fulltime but can you kind of oversee and
- 00:55:02give me some tidbits on on on what
- 00:55:04things to to change or to add or you
- 00:55:07know what am I missing from my prep my
- 00:55:09prep work because I want to take my my
- 00:55:12training my performance to the next
- 00:55:13level and then grow from there and so I
- 00:55:16said yeah let's do it so I was able to
- 00:55:18put a team around them um and oversee
- 00:55:21some of the things that he's doing and
- 00:55:23um you know with his hard work with his
- 00:55:25commitment uh uh not only did he talk
- 00:55:27about it but he did alter some of the
- 00:55:30things he was doing he altered his his
- 00:55:32training he altered his mindset he
- 00:55:34altered some of the daily habits and uh
- 00:55:38you know he's had some really really
- 00:55:39good successes this past year he was
- 00:55:41voted uh NFL defensive player of the
- 00:55:43year so love that and when you're
- 00:55:45working with someone like him or with
- 00:55:46Rory what's the what's the most valuable
- 00:55:48question you you can ask them what's
- 00:55:50your goal and what's stopping you from
- 00:55:52getting there yeah you know you're
- 00:55:54you're asking me for help you're asking
- 00:55:55me for advice what's stopping you from
- 00:55:57from from getting there then then you
- 00:56:00turn back you turn the ownership back on
- 00:56:01them and say well now now I got to be
- 00:56:04self accountable now [ __ ] yeah I mean I
- 00:56:07think you know the the true Mastery of
- 00:56:09yours is working with Incredible people
- 00:56:12giving them your knowledge and your
- 00:56:13understanding but also learning from
- 00:56:15them as well yeah and I know you know
- 00:56:17early on you had the opportunity to work
- 00:56:18with Tim Grover yes um who is you know
- 00:56:21again lorded is one of the greats in
- 00:56:23this world Michael Jordan's trainer of
- 00:56:25course
- 00:56:27what what was the biggest thing you
- 00:56:28learned from working with Tim I love
- 00:56:30that question because you know everyone
- 00:56:32says oh you know you you're around Tim
- 00:56:33Grover and Michael Jordan um well I was
- 00:56:36around him for two weeks yeah two
- 00:56:39summers in a row when Jordan was coming
- 00:56:41back to play for the Wizards so in those
- 00:56:43four weeks total in the two years I
- 00:56:46learned it wasn't about the exercises it
- 00:56:48wasn't about the working out it was it
- 00:56:50was about uh how to handle myself around
- 00:56:54greatness and and and how it's so I
- 00:56:56watched Tim how he handled himself
- 00:56:59around greatness and around around MJ
- 00:57:01and so I I took more I learned more from
- 00:57:04that than than I did the exercises you
- 00:57:06know it wasn't about the squats or the
- 00:57:07bench press or anything like it was more
- 00:57:09about how to handle myself and how to
- 00:57:11make sure that Tim was matching
- 00:57:14Michael's energy when he walked in the
- 00:57:15room or Tim would even supersede it and
- 00:57:18bring more energy you know if if if one
- 00:57:21day MJ came in you know in a mood or or
- 00:57:24what have you you know Tim was there and
- 00:57:26he would provide the energy for Michael
- 00:57:28and you've taken that on that's
- 00:57:29something that you've yes yes yes yeah
- 00:57:31so I I learned more about about handling
- 00:57:35greatness you know tell us what else you
- 00:57:36learn about handling greatness I think
- 00:57:38that's fascinating yeah I think just
- 00:57:39just really patience and um and and I
- 00:57:42spoke about it uh in a in a conference
- 00:57:45recently about matching the energy in
- 00:57:47the room reading The Energy in the room
- 00:57:50and especially if I'm just working
- 00:57:51oneon-one with an individual uh if he or
- 00:57:54she comes in and you know if they're in
- 00:57:56a mood or what have you okay I kind of I
- 00:57:59don't do any digging and po hey what's
- 00:58:01wrong yeah you know I just if they want
- 00:58:03to talk then then they they'll talk
- 00:58:05about it but uh my energy doesn't
- 00:58:09doesn't change meaning I I don't bring
- 00:58:10it down or not I I bring it even I push
- 00:58:13them even more because by by me
- 00:58:16challenging them then they're forgetting
- 00:58:18about about their about their problems
- 00:58:21and then they at the end of the day and
- 00:58:22I talk about in the book they feel
- 00:58:24better after a hard work workout or
- 00:58:26after a challenging session with me then
- 00:58:29they feel better you know what okay yeah
- 00:58:31this is the way I should address the
- 00:58:32problem that I had you know before I
- 00:58:34came in you know they usually figure out
- 00:58:36a way you know and and it's it's it's
- 00:58:38interesting what exercise does to
- 00:58:40stimulate the mind and the thought
- 00:58:42processes around it so I think something
- 00:58:44that's really interesting here is that
- 00:58:45so many of us see other people doing
- 00:58:47more or achieving great things and it
- 00:58:49derails us it's almost like their
- 00:58:51success is our failure but it sounds
- 00:58:53like LeBron is able to look at other
- 00:58:56people doing great things or doing more
- 00:58:58or finding an edge and be inspired by
- 00:59:00that rather than knocked back by that is
- 00:59:02that fair Yes yes again it goes back to
- 00:59:04the mindset what is your mindset with
- 00:59:06with with all of this you know how
- 00:59:07serious are you about achieving that
- 00:59:09goal well don't don't look at
- 00:59:11competition as a you know look at it fly
- 00:59:14yes you know you want to dominate your
- 00:59:15competition but you also want to learn
- 00:59:16from them don't let your ego get in the
- 00:59:18way of of your uh progress yeah you know
- 00:59:21so learn learn from your mistakes learn
- 00:59:23from your defeats and learn from some of
- 00:59:25the uh
- 00:59:26Le learn from your competition as well
- 00:59:28so one of the most common questions I
- 00:59:30get asked if I'm walking down the street
- 00:59:31is I listen to your podcast what is the
- 00:59:33thing that unites everyone that's been
- 00:59:35on there you know what what do high
- 00:59:37performers all have in common you know
- 00:59:38people are looking for a shortcut right
- 00:59:40you spent a little bit of time with Kobe
- 00:59:43a bit of time with Michael Jordan plenty
- 00:59:46of time with LeBron James some time with
- 00:59:48Rory maroy some some NFL greates as well
- 00:59:51so when you look at the plethora of
- 00:59:53talent at the very highest level that
- 00:59:55you've spent spent decades working with
- 00:59:58what do you believe unites them
- 01:00:01all when they finally make a
- 01:00:04decision that they were willing to
- 01:00:06sacrifice to be the greatest once they
- 01:00:09make that decision then it's it's came
- 01:00:11over they're willing to to face down
- 01:00:14that uh uh that that Journey that
- 01:00:17journey of sacrifice but the only way
- 01:00:19they get there is by believing the
- 01:00:20greatness is possible so do they all
- 01:00:22have that innate belief that they can
- 01:00:25they can be the Great is yes yeah yeah
- 01:00:28once you once you decide that you you
- 01:00:30have to uh you know then then everything
- 01:00:32else is easy because you know where you
- 01:00:34want to be yeah all right so now make
- 01:00:37make the make the Daily Commitment to it
- 01:00:39listen before we wrap this up and I've
- 01:00:40love this conversation there was a great
- 01:00:42quote from Asha which I feel I need to
- 01:00:44share um Asha said um Mike is more than
- 01:00:48just a teacher or a trainer his approach
- 01:00:50to health and wellness is an approach to
- 01:00:51life if you stay ready you ain't got to
- 01:00:54get ready yes um look Usher is he's not
- 01:00:58quite a normal guy is he I mean he looks
- 01:00:59incredible he's a he's a talented guy
- 01:01:01but he's not he's not a professional
- 01:01:03athlete so for people like me people
- 01:01:05like Usha people who are listening and
- 01:01:07watching this conversation right now
- 01:01:10what advice would you like to give to us
- 01:01:13about how we can find our own Edge how
- 01:01:15we can find our own version of greatness
- 01:01:17I I would say uh stay centered and stay
- 01:01:19occupied in what what would what makes
- 01:01:23you happy and what makes you um um want
- 01:01:27to be great and so you figure out your
- 01:01:29own Journey okay figure out your own
- 01:01:31journey and be accountable to yourself
- 01:01:34um throughout that Journey you know know
- 01:01:36that you're going to have some uh yeah
- 01:01:37you're going to have some days where
- 01:01:38you're just not feeling it or you got
- 01:01:40some days where it's just not not coming
- 01:01:42together as you would like but but
- 01:01:44continue with the journey and don't lose
- 01:01:46the belief on those tough days don't
- 01:01:47lose the belief absolutely not does
- 01:01:49LeBron have tough days absolutely yeah
- 01:01:52absolutely but you know he he he takes
- 01:01:54it on the chin and he knows that there's
- 01:01:58that that today today will be gone
- 01:01:59tomorrow okay so do the best you can
- 01:02:02today and tomorrow start fresh and in
- 01:02:04all your years of coaching him how many
- 01:02:06times has he turned up to the gym and
- 01:02:08gone I'm not having it today I'm going
- 01:02:09to just toss this off it's happened as
- 01:02:11it's happened a few times where he comes
- 01:02:13in and the energy isn't quite there but
- 01:02:15he battles through it because he knows
- 01:02:17in his mind he does not lose sight of
- 01:02:18that goal to be the greatest and he
- 01:02:20knows it's not easy he knows it's not
- 01:02:22going to be easy you know and and and uh
- 01:02:25he's fueled by you know by
- 01:02:28by by being able to to show folks
- 01:02:31something different again that they
- 01:02:32haven't experienced before it wasn't
- 01:02:34long ago that Michael Johnson was in the
- 01:02:35very chair you're in now and he said he
- 01:02:36never missed a training session he said
- 01:02:38why would why would I ever miss a
- 01:02:40training session it's just was not part
- 01:02:41of my mindset for being the greatest
- 01:02:44love it yeah exactly it's it's not part
- 01:02:46of that of that of that that that
- 01:02:48Journey that they should just they just
- 01:02:49laid out for yourself you've given so
- 01:02:52much to LeBron so much of your knowledge
- 01:02:53so much of your experience you know
- 01:02:55you've youve kind of helped to each
- 01:02:56other um after all your time together
- 01:02:58all these years the highs the lows the
- 01:03:00successes the
- 01:03:02struggles if you could say one thing to
- 01:03:04LeBron what would you want to tell
- 01:03:08him I just just that I'm proud of him
- 01:03:12I'm I'm proud to be u a part of this
- 01:03:15journey that's it love that and when you
- 01:03:17when you think about how proud you are
- 01:03:19where does your brain take
- 01:03:22you it takes you always back to our to
- 01:03:24our initial conversation to this
- 01:03:26conversation in in akan Ohio about being
- 01:03:28the
- 01:03:29greatest man you've done it together
- 01:03:32yeah yeah we're still going I love every
- 01:03:35time I say we still going every time I
- 01:03:37say how well you've done what a great
- 01:03:39career LeBron has had you're like we're
- 01:03:41still going yeah yeah we're still
- 01:03:43there's still work to do are you ready
- 01:03:44for some quick far questions yeah let's
- 01:03:45do it from all the work that you've done
- 01:03:47over so many years with yourself and LJ
- 01:03:49what are the three most important
- 01:03:52non-negotiable behaviors that matter
- 01:03:55being on time
- 01:03:59um being accountable and three
- 01:04:03uh sacrificing whatever needs to be to
- 01:04:06achieve the goal what's the greatest
- 01:04:08piece of advice that you've ever been
- 01:04:10given who was it from and why did it
- 01:04:12matter H gosh I've been mentored by so
- 01:04:16many greats
- 01:04:19um uh Stan Kell uh an old strength coach
- 01:04:23of mine um live every day constant
- 01:04:27movement with
- 01:04:28purpose have constant movement with
- 01:04:31purpose have a purpose each and every
- 01:04:32day lovely yeah what's your biggest
- 01:04:34strength what's your greatest
- 01:04:37weakness my biggest strength I believe
- 01:04:40is that I have
- 01:04:42uh the ability to not lose sight of the
- 01:04:46goal I'm not derailed by by by small
- 01:04:50things and
- 01:04:52weakness um
- 01:04:55think I'm a caring person too caring is
- 01:04:58there such a thing as too caring yeah
- 01:04:59yeah it could be why is that a we could
- 01:05:01be you know some people take they'll
- 01:05:03mistake uh your your kindness or
- 01:05:05weakness right if you could give some
- 01:05:08advice to a a young Mike desperate to
- 01:05:11get into the NBA just starting out what
- 01:05:13would your advice be to
- 01:05:15him stay the
- 01:05:18course
- 01:05:20um be closer to your
- 01:05:23family and um
- 01:05:26don't forget to look after yourself as
- 01:05:29well yeah yeah I can imagine that's an
- 01:05:31issue if you spend your life looking
- 01:05:32after other people yeah yes yeah um what
- 01:05:35would you recommend as a apart from your
- 01:05:37own one book that the high performance
- 01:05:38audience should read that had a real
- 01:05:40impact on you and your life I really
- 01:05:43like um I really like The Alchemist I
- 01:05:46love that book yeah yeah I love the book
- 01:05:48I actually shared it and I gave it to
- 01:05:50LeBron during the playoffs uh you know
- 01:05:52he likes to read he likes to read doing
- 01:05:53the playoffs he shuts off social media
- 01:05:55and actually I gave him a copy of it and
- 01:05:57he loved it oh that's Prett he actually
- 01:05:59read it cover to cover and finally
- 01:06:02you're one Golden Rule for living a high
- 01:06:04performance life what would you like to
- 01:06:06leave people thinking
- 01:06:08about that uh there were not robots okay
- 01:06:12they they're going to be days that are
- 01:06:13not going to have it stay the course
- 01:06:16stay the
- 01:06:17course that's it thanks man yeah already
