00:00:00
for the last few years I've been going
00:00:01
through different 3D scanners trying to
00:00:03
find one that does what I need it to do
00:00:04
without paying $155,000 I found one a
00:00:07
few months ago in the einar since then a
00:00:09
handful of companies have reached out to
00:00:11
me asking if I want to review their
00:00:12
scanners and I've said no until a few
00:00:14
weeks ago when Revo Point asked me if I
00:00:16
wanted to review their new Morocco
00:00:18
scanner I was intrigued it is fully
00:00:20
self-contained no computer no wires no
00:00:22
plugs just a handheld scanner neat so I
00:00:25
decided to give it a shot and see where
00:00:26
it can fit into my growing Fleet of
00:00:28
scanners I asked some of my viewers what
00:00:30
they wanted to know about it and the
00:00:31
most common answer was is it better than
00:00:33
the einar let's find
00:00:35
[Applause]
00:00:40
out I have a Revo Point pop that I've
00:00:42
talked about in the past it's not bad
00:00:44
for the price but it feels more like a
00:00:45
hobbiest toy than an actual tool you can
00:00:48
get decent scans if you're careful and
00:00:49
your part is the right size shape luster
00:00:52
and color I don't use it anymore it's at
00:00:53
the bottom of my list of usefulness for
00:00:55
scanners they've had a few newer
00:00:56
scanners come out in the meantime most
00:00:58
recently the Morocco the Morocco is
00:01:01
$1,300 or 1,600 for the 32 gig version
00:01:04
although they do have the early
00:01:05
Kickstarter discount price of 40% off or
00:01:08
35 or whatever if it's anything like
00:01:10
their other scanners it'll be on sale
00:01:11
and will never actually sell for its
00:01:13
list price I don't care for this pricing
00:01:15
strategy it feels dishonest it's like
00:01:17
the furniture stores that are always
00:01:18
going out of business just tell me how
00:01:20
much it costs this is an all-in-one
00:01:22
scanner or more accurately an Android
00:01:24
device slapped to the back of a scanner
00:01:26
it has some pretty cool features like
00:01:28
this screen can flip up so you can see
00:01:29
yourself while you're scanning your face
00:01:31
I don't know why scanner companies
00:01:33
always show face scans is there a big
00:01:34
Market out there for scanning faces it's
00:01:36
not super intuitive there are only two
00:01:38
buttons one of them has a play icon this
00:01:40
other one is unlabeled it's the power
00:01:42
button apparently it has a couple of
00:01:44
neat features like this here will
00:01:45
attempt to remove the table underneath
00:01:47
your scan it also has two distant
00:01:49
settings one near and one far so you can
00:01:51
scan large things and smaller things
00:01:54
most of the stuff I do is medium to
00:01:55
large so we're going to focus on that I
00:01:57
have that pop scanner but also have an
00:01:59
Intel scanner scanner and the einar the
00:02:01
discounted price of the Morocco is about
00:02:03
the same as the einar and since this is
00:02:05
my go-to scanner it is the defending
00:02:07
champion and we will be comparing the
00:02:09
Morocco to
00:02:10
[Music]
00:02:14
that I've long dreamt of making a carbon
00:02:16
fiber roof for the S600 I don't know if
00:02:18
I ever will but if I do I will need a
00:02:20
scan to start with I've tried this a few
00:02:22
times before once with the Intel l515
00:02:25
lar scanner once with the revo Point pop
00:02:27
and once with my iPhone and none of them
00:02:29
would ever do it the problem is all the
00:02:31
points are too far apart from each other
00:02:33
I need to get the top of the windshield
00:02:34
specifically the top surface here and
00:02:36
the back surface here and then I need to
00:02:37
get the top of the Roll hoops and I need
00:02:39
this flange back here ideally I'd also
00:02:41
get the top of the door so I can figure
00:02:43
out where the door ends every time I've
00:02:44
tried this I lose tracking between the
00:02:46
windshield and the rear usually in this
00:02:48
no man's land of the top of the door
00:02:50
I've also noticed on some of the cheaper
00:02:52
scanners that if you start at one place
00:02:53
and scan in a circle your scan won't
00:02:56
line up when you make it back to where
00:02:57
you started which means it's just adding
00:02:59
up a bunch of little little errors along
00:03:00
the way this is a good test because
00:03:02
there are a lot of different things here
00:03:03
there's Chrome soft black paint aluminum
00:03:06
there are areas with features and some
00:03:08
without many features and there's one
00:03:09
big loop so we can see how well they
00:03:11
line up at the end which should give us
00:03:13
a pretty good sense of overall accuracy
00:03:15
we'll start with the soft top on since
00:03:16
that will give us some surface to
00:03:18
connect all the pertinent points it
00:03:20
doesn't have much specific geometry but
00:03:21
that should gauge which one of these can
00:03:23
track flattish surfaces the einar is
00:03:25
very quick it doesn't have a problem
00:03:27
tracking any of these surfaces even the
00:03:28
Chrome which is kind of surprising one
00:03:30
thing to note here the better your
00:03:32
computer the better this thing is at
00:03:33
keeping its tracking my laptop will
00:03:35
throttle itself if it's not plugged in
00:03:37
and it is noticeably slower and works at
00:03:39
scanning which is why I always drag out
00:03:40
the power brakes with it the feedback on
00:03:42
scan quality is excellent giving
00:03:44
color-coded scan as you go and when I
00:03:46
get all the way around back to the
00:03:47
center of the front it lined up nearly
00:03:49
perfectly the Morocco was noticeably
00:03:51
slower it had some trouble keeping its
00:03:52
tracking but it's manageable if you're
00:03:54
steady and you take your time the big
00:03:56
drawback here is that sometimes when it
00:03:58
loses its tracking it doesn't know know
00:03:59
it so it'll start throwing garbage data
00:04:01
on top of your good data it's not always
00:04:03
good at telling you it's doing this and
00:04:05
the small screen doesn't make it easy to
00:04:06
see this it did scan all of the same
00:04:08
surfaces but when it got around to the
00:04:10
front it didn't quite line up I took the
00:04:12
top off and tried again this is kind of
00:04:14
on hard mode since there's less geometry
00:04:15
to follow the einar did great except the
00:04:18
top of the windshield took some careful
00:04:19
movement which is not surprising there's
00:04:21
not a lot of geometry up there the
00:04:23
Morocco had a really hard time with the
00:04:24
top of the windshield I added targets to
00:04:26
the top to help the scanners along I
00:04:28
generally don't like these things you
00:04:29
always need way too many of them to be
00:04:31
of any use and they're only marginally
00:04:33
useful both scanners did a bit better
00:04:35
with these but not significantly I found
00:04:37
that both of them really like hard edges
00:04:39
and clear geometry rather than markers
00:04:41
it would probably be a lot more
00:04:42
effective to tape a bunch of Hot Wheels
00:04:44
cars to the windshield that way the
00:04:45
scanner would have geometry to follow
00:04:47
and then you could just delete the cars
00:04:48
in the scan later Plus in the end you
00:04:50
have a bunch of Hot Wheels cars instead
00:04:52
of having to remove tons of stupid
00:04:54
little
00:04:58
dots one of the biggest issues with
00:05:01
scanning in general is tracking you move
00:05:03
the scanner along a surface and it picks
00:05:04
up new points relative to Old points but
00:05:06
it has to always see some of the old
00:05:08
points so it knows where the new ones
00:05:10
are in relation this is why it's hard to
00:05:12
go around corners both of these scanners
00:05:13
have advantages over previous scanners
00:05:15
to help mitigate this problem I
00:05:17
suggested in a previous video that einar
00:05:19
should have a feature that allows you to
00:05:20
undo the last 10 seconds or so of
00:05:22
scanning say you're scanning something
00:05:24
big and you get towards the end of it
00:05:25
and it just jumps around and starts
00:05:27
dumping garbage data all over your good
00:05:28
data if it would be great if you had a
00:05:30
button that just made it forget the last
00:05:32
5 or 10 seconds of scanning the Morocco
00:05:34
has that it's this button right here and
00:05:36
it's pretty great it's definitely a need
00:05:38
to have thing because the Morocco jumps
00:05:40
around kind of a lot it'll tell you when
00:05:42
it loses its space for sure but it seems
00:05:44
to lose its space and not know it a lot
00:05:45
the einar is much better at keeping its
00:05:47
tracking and knowing where it's lost its
00:05:49
tracking it'll start beeping at you and
00:05:51
flashing and you just press the pause
00:05:53
button you go back to a known area and
00:05:55
press the play button and it gives you a
00:05:56
chance to make sure it's in the right
00:05:57
place before you press the play button
00:05:59
again and start scanning when I say
00:06:01
pause or play button I'm talking about
00:06:02
this middle button on the back here the
00:06:04
software that comes with the einar is
00:06:05
also pretty good at stitching together
00:06:07
multiple scans it's gotten a lot better
00:06:09
too it loses its tracking a lot less
00:06:10
than when I first got this the Morocco
00:06:12
has a feature where you can take a bunch
00:06:14
of still shots instead of one continuous
00:06:16
scan it does make it easier to make sure
00:06:18
you don't lose your tracking but it
00:06:19
takes a lot longer than just scanning it
00:06:21
was kind of helpful when I scanned the
00:06:23
back of the engine it's a feature that
00:06:24
definitely has some use cases the
00:06:26
Morocco also comes with a lot of things
00:06:28
that make it easier to get good tracking
00:06:30
markers marker sheets a turntable with
00:06:32
marker sheets some plastic to sort of
00:06:34
block out whatever you don't want to
00:06:35
[Music]
00:06:39
scan I scanned a few things with both
00:06:41
scanners including the back of the Viper
00:06:43
engine and the oil pan all with pretty
00:06:45
similar results in all cases the einar
00:06:48
got a better scan but the truth is the
00:06:49
scan still wasn't perfect I sent it to
00:06:51
the company that makes transmission
00:06:52
adapters and they said it didn't have
00:06:54
the Fidelity to make a new adapter but I
00:06:56
think if I had the engine out of the car
00:06:58
I could get that scan the Morocco may
00:07:00
also be able to get the data but it
00:07:01
would certainly take much more effort
00:07:03
they're both not exactly set up for this
00:07:05
kind of detail work the truth is if
00:07:07
you're doing some serious reverse
00:07:08
engineering you still need to spend a
00:07:10
lot more money on a scanner all of these
00:07:12
companies advertise accuracy numbers
00:07:14
that frankly seem made up the Morocco
00:07:16
has a lot of example scans and I have no
00:07:18
doubt that you could scan all of these
00:07:19
things the question with a scanner isn't
00:07:21
what you can scan the question is or
00:07:23
questions are is it dimensionally
00:07:25
accurate and is it a pain in the ass the
00:07:27
Morocco is more of a pain than the einar
00:07:29
and it's decidedly less accurate the
00:07:31
Morocco is convenient it's a lot nicer
00:07:33
to just carry this out to the garage
00:07:34
than it is to carry out the einar the
00:07:36
cables and the laptop the power supplies
00:07:38
and plug it all in if you don't have a
00:07:40
powerful laptop it's even more of a pain
00:07:42
and it is pretty cool that Revo Point
00:07:44
managed to get a whole scanner and
00:07:45
software all in one handheld thing but
00:07:48
you do lose something with it if you
00:07:49
don't have the processing power of a
00:07:51
full computer the scanning is slower the
00:07:53
tracking is slower and the accuracy is
00:07:55
worse the Morocco seems like a deal
00:07:57
because you don't need to plug it into a
00:07:58
computer but let's be honest you already
00:08:00
have a computer you kind of need one to
00:08:02
do anything with the scans probably a
00:08:04
decent one if the scans are large enough
00:08:05
and have enough detail I've loaned my
00:08:07
einar out to friends who only have Mac
00:08:09
computers and I have to give them the
00:08:11
laptop with it which is kind of annoying
00:08:13
I reached out to einar and asked them
00:08:14
actually told them you need to have a
00:08:15
Mac version of this software they told
00:08:17
me they are working on one and it's
00:08:19
supposed to be out sometime next year
00:08:21
for right now if you don't have a
00:08:22
Windows computer or you can't drag it
00:08:24
out to wherever you're scanning maybe
00:08:26
the Morocco is the right choice but for
00:08:27
me I can't think of a situ ation where I
00:08:29
wouldn't just use the einar I should
00:08:31
note here that Revo Point gave me this
00:08:33
scanner to review two of them actually
00:08:35
but I paid for the einar with my own
00:08:37
money and I don't have any other
00:08:38
sponsorships or affiliates with these
00:08:40
companies there are links in the
00:08:41
description to both of these products
00:08:43
but I don't get any money or anything if
00:08:44
you click on them there are already a
00:08:46
lot of reviews on the Morocco most of
00:08:48
them came out before pricing was even
00:08:50
announced revvo Point seems pretty
00:08:51
aggressive with their marketing I wanted
00:08:53
to like this I thought I would but the
00:08:55
price is high and I can't really
00:08:56
recommend it for the kind of things that
00:08:58
I do it used to be that you had to
00:09:00
impress people to get people to watch
00:09:01
your show now you just have to impress
00:09:03
the algorithm so do me a favor hit that
00:09:05
subscribe button all haale the
