00:00:01
today's protector is I will teach you
00:00:04
have to go marigold
00:00:09
hi I'm welcome to project Diaries in
00:00:12
today's video I'm going to teach you how
00:00:13
to grow marigold from seed now you may
00:00:15
have heard me talk about this in my
00:00:17
previous video of companion edible
00:00:19
flowers now before making that video
00:00:22
I didn't realize just how controversial
00:00:24
this subject can be there are quite a
00:00:27
few do's and don'ts and some people were
00:00:30
arguing about the different varieties
00:00:31
that I listed in that video now everyone
00:00:33
is agreeing that the calendula variety
00:00:35
are edible now there seems to be two or
00:00:39
three others that well quite debatable
00:00:42
now I've gone back and eaten some of
00:00:44
these non edible ones basically they're
00:00:47
poisonous if you eat quite a lot so if
00:00:50
you eat them as a whole meal it would
00:00:53
probably cause some kind of harm to you
00:00:55
but I've gone back and I've tried some
00:00:57
of those petals and quite frankly
00:00:59
they're really chemically and and
00:01:01
they're really bitter and I wouldn't
00:01:02
want to eat too many of those in the
00:01:04
first place
00:01:04
there was another variety that was told
00:01:07
about that I wasn't known previous and
00:01:09
that doesn't look anything like the all
00:01:11
the photos that I put in my previous
00:01:14
video they look almost weed-like and I
00:01:16
wouldn't eat those anyway but some of
00:01:20
the cooking variety some of the cooking
00:01:22
ideas that I came up with we're actually
00:01:24
from TV celebrity chefs so if they're
00:01:26
promoting it then obviously there must
00:01:29
be some kind of I don't know but anyway
00:01:31
I'm going to leave that debate there
00:01:33
please if you are putting anything new
00:01:36
into your diet do some of your own
00:01:37
research there is a lot of fake
00:01:38
information out there on the internet
00:01:41
and obviously I don't want anybody to be
00:01:43
harmed by any suggestions that I've made
00:01:45
so please if you want it to be 100% safe
00:01:50
make sure you're growing the calendula
00:01:52
variety but anyway I'm going to go back
00:01:54
to today's video and growing all types
00:01:56
of marigolds from seed as usual I'm
00:02:00
using multi-purpose store-bought compost
00:02:02
and I'm going to lightly press the soil
00:02:04
down before sowing the season now you
00:02:06
can get perennial and annual varieties
00:02:08
of marigolds the perennials will come
00:02:11
back every year but they won't withstand
00:02:12
any
00:02:13
cold temperatures also a majority of the
00:02:16
annual should self-seed and come back
00:02:17
the next year anyway now I'm going to
00:02:19
try and make this video as soon as
00:02:20
possible so I'll leave a lot more
00:02:22
information in the description box below
00:02:23
also as usual I'll leave you some handy
00:02:26
Amazon links if you want to produce any
00:02:28
growing materials or seeds online
00:02:30
including DC trays propagators and many
00:02:33
varieties of marigold seeds so here they
00:02:36
are now different varieties will have
00:02:38
different shape seeds now a lot of
00:02:40
gardeners will put three or four in each
00:02:42
pod and then thin out the weaker
00:02:43
seedlings later on but personally I
00:02:45
don't like wasting seeds and I love to
00:02:47
give all of my seedlings the best
00:02:49
starting line so I'm just going to place
00:02:50
one seed in each pod now marigolds will
00:02:53
keep blooming all summer long as long as
00:02:55
they keep getting some warm weather so
00:02:57
the best time to so these are indoors if
00:02:59
you want an early start or outside as
00:03:01
soon as there's no chance of frost
00:03:04
once you finish sewing all of the seeds
00:03:06
you just want to top them off with a
00:03:08
light layer of slope if you're
00:03:10
interested in making this soil scoop and
00:03:12
you haven't seen my video the link
00:03:14
should be on the screen now then lightly
00:03:16
just spread the soil all over the seeds
00:03:18
and if you see any big chunks over break
00:03:20
them up or throw around the reason why
00:03:22
you don't want any chunks is because you
00:03:24
want the seedlings to have no resistance
00:03:26
when they're trying to push through the
00:03:27
soil now one of the most popular
00:03:29
questions I keep getting asked is
00:03:31
watering and it's one of the most
00:03:33
difficult to answer mainly due to the
00:03:35
fact that each country and climate and
00:03:37
weather conditions are completely
00:03:38
different if your weather is really hot
00:03:40
you at least want to soak these once a
00:03:42
day and in cooler climates you might be
00:03:44
able to get away with every other day
00:03:46
just make sure the soil is constantly
00:03:48
moist and it doesn't dry out or become
00:03:50
water look then all that's left to do is
00:03:52
label these up and leave them in a warm
00:03:54
sunny place and then just wait they
00:03:59
should start sprouting within a few days
00:04:01
and here they are after a week here they
00:04:08
are six weeks in and as you can see
00:04:09
they're just starting to produce flowers
00:04:11
now unfortunately we've had some really
00:04:13
cold weather at the end of spring here
00:04:15
and it's really affected the growth
00:04:16
process and the speed that these grow up
00:04:18
less than half of those germinated which
00:04:21
is really unusual but I will keep
00:04:23
watering the whole tray and hope they
00:04:24
come on later on when it wants
00:04:28
so as you can see the rate of these are
00:04:31
growing so so differently this is mainly
00:04:34
due to the weather that we've had now
00:04:36
two weeks ago we had a frost and then
00:04:38
since then we've had nothing but
00:04:39
forecasts of rain and overcast cloud but
00:04:45
now we've got some of the hottest days
00:04:47
of the year and so I'm just going to
00:04:49
transplant these because I still don't
00:04:50
trust the weather report and I want to
00:04:52
keep these in the shed just in case but
00:04:54
as you can see hardly any of them have
00:04:55
germinated due to this cold weather and
00:04:57
last year pretty much all of them
00:04:59
actually all of them did germinate and
00:05:01
bloom so I'm going to try again later on
00:05:04
and hopefully do these through the
00:05:05
summer but I'm just going to transplant
00:05:07
these and show you how to do it and
00:05:08
here's it help so I'm going to use my
00:05:11
regular tool of a teaspoon I'm going to
00:05:13
use the handle here because it helps me
00:05:14
prise out the seedling a little bit
00:05:16
easier now at this stage the plant is
00:05:18
really sturdy so there's no need to be
00:05:20
too delicate when transplanting as you
00:05:22
can see there's a really nice root
00:05:23
system forming on here and I'm just
00:05:25
going to place it at the base of the pot
00:05:28
then just top it up with regular
00:05:30
multi-purpose compost now if your
00:05:32
weather is good you really don't need to
00:05:34
do this step but as we're going to get
00:05:35
more rain it can rot the flowers so I'm
00:05:37
going to leave them in a shed a bit
00:05:39
longer now there are so many gardeners
00:05:41
that actually hate marigolds but
00:05:42
personally I really like them they're
00:05:44
generally an all-round beneficial flower
00:05:46
to have in your garden mainly because
00:05:48
they're extremely bright orange color
00:05:50
attracts lots of pollinators they're one
00:05:52
of the main flowers to be used in
00:05:54
companion planting because they work
00:05:55
alongside many fruits and vegetables
00:05:57
such as apricots beans cabbages carrots
00:06:00
celery apples broccoli Brussels sprouts
00:06:04
cauliflower mulberries lettuce
00:06:07
strawberries tomatoes and any fruit
00:06:09
trees they also help repel pests such as
00:06:12
tomato worms so I've lightly packed down
00:06:15
the soil and I'm just going to give it a
00:06:16
good watering now at this stage you want
00:06:18
to give it a really good soak but later
00:06:20
on you can allow it to dry out not too
00:06:22
much or for too long but it'll really
00:06:24
help promote a good root system and
00:06:26
there you go
00:06:27
all done
00:06:30
here they are less than a week later and
00:06:32
I'm really glad I left these in the shed
00:06:33
because we've had nothing but rain but
00:06:35
fingers crossed we will start getting
00:06:37
some good sunshine soon so now these are
00:06:42
blooming and they're really lovely size
00:06:43
as you can see there's a second flower
00:06:46
coming there now and it is absolutely
00:06:48
boiling today we're finally getting some
00:06:51
good weather so hopefully the next few
00:06:52
weeks are going to be nothing but
00:06:53
sunshine so now I'm going to read put
00:06:56
these straight into the garden and show
00:06:57
you how to do that now so if you're
00:06:59
going to place these in your square foot
00:07:01
garden you can space these all per
00:07:03
square but I've only got three at the
00:07:05
moment little has to do now these will
00:07:07
find a happy home between what tomato
00:07:09
plants here but when you're fertilizing
00:07:11
your Tomatoes don't fertilize your
00:07:13
marigold when taking these out of the
00:07:15
pot just give the bottom a little screen
00:07:17
turn it upside down and it should come
00:07:19
out easily once you've done that then
00:07:21
prise the root system out slightly and
00:07:23
that will help the grow into the new
00:07:24
soil once you've done that roughly dig a
00:07:26
hole the same size of the pot you don't
00:07:29
want to bury the root system too deep
00:07:30
just the same height as what it was
00:07:32
before now if you aren't growing these
00:07:34
in a square foot garden and you're just
00:07:36
putting them straight into soil they
00:07:38
also work really well if you have clay
00:07:39
based soil or sandy as I was saying if
00:07:43
you end up putting so much fertilizer on
00:07:45
these you'll promote too much green
00:07:46
leaves and not enough flowers marigolds
00:07:49
also don't need dead headings but if
00:07:50
you're growing the American variety you
00:07:53
can do that and it will promote more
00:07:54
flowers to come on later on if you also
00:07:57
grow in the African varieties you'll
00:07:59
find that if you have bad weather the
00:08:00
flowers will die back quicker in rain
00:08:02
there are around 50 different species of
00:08:05
marigolds but they will stem from a
00:08:06
three different varieties I will put a
00:08:09
full explanation on flower size and
00:08:11
height of growth for each different
00:08:13
species in the description box below I
00:08:15
hope you've enjoyed today's video on
00:08:17
