- 00:00:08my brother Jacob vanan here with us let
- 00:00:11me tell you a little bit about Jacob
- 00:00:14vanan I met Jacob in the friends uh
- 00:00:18masters of Christian spiritual formation
- 00:00:21and Leadership program that is uh
- 00:00:24directed by Professor Kei kler who is
- 00:00:27here with us and James Brian Smith and
- 00:00:30uh and and others and so uh when I first
- 00:00:33met Jacob uh in the program there was
- 00:00:37one other guy that was a youth pastor
- 00:00:39and I was a youth pastor at the time so
- 00:00:40I was like Hey we're going to be fast
- 00:00:42friends quickly we have lots to talk
- 00:00:44about and as we went through the program
- 00:00:47became friends realized that we have uh
- 00:00:50a lot in common and also challenge each
- 00:00:52other in great ways and so Jacob has
- 00:00:54always been a person to me um from the
- 00:00:57moment I met him that he just puts
- 00:00:59himself fully in to anything he does he
- 00:01:01lives his life with intentionality with
- 00:01:04courage and boldness uh I can just brag
- 00:01:06about you for a long time Jacob because
- 00:01:07I love you but um currently his vocation
- 00:01:10he is a uh director of student life at
- 00:01:12Christ Church Anglican Church in um
- 00:01:15Kansas City yep Overland Park Overland
- 00:01:17Park and um and uh is married has a has
- 00:01:21a a little baby well not a little baby
- 00:01:23anymore nine months nine months now okay
- 00:01:26uh so you're starting to have another
- 00:01:28one no never mind we don't want to talk
- 00:01:29about that um
- 00:01:31so uh but anyways I'm so excited when
- 00:01:34when Jacob and I were talking about what
- 00:01:35message he might bring to this community
- 00:01:38um he he had an idea and I thought this
- 00:01:41would be really helpful this would be
- 00:01:43really helpful because with some of the
- 00:01:44conversations I've had with students
- 00:01:47about church and church hurt and church
- 00:01:49struggle and what does it look like to
- 00:01:51find a and all these questions uh he he
- 00:01:54had it on his heart to talk about that
- 00:01:55and so I'm so excited would you welcome
- 00:01:58Jacob vangan thanks guys thanks
- 00:02:02Mike hey guys thanks it's great to be
- 00:02:05with you wish I could be with you all
- 00:02:06the time but uh three- hour drive can't
- 00:02:08do it all the time but so grateful for
- 00:02:11the community of friends so grateful to
- 00:02:12get to be here and you have an amazing
- 00:02:15campus Pastor in Mike and is doing with
- 00:02:18the campus ministry really is incredible
- 00:02:20and so I hope you utilize that because
- 00:02:22the opportunities you have here at
- 00:02:24Friends University uh are great and I'm
- 00:02:27honored to be with you as I uh talk
- 00:02:30about a topic that I'm passionate about
- 00:02:32and a topic that I'm not sure I've heard
- 00:02:35anyone talk about in a helpful authentic
- 00:02:37compelling way when I heard the theme
- 00:02:39that you have of coming fully alive I
- 00:02:43think such an important part of that is
- 00:02:47to talk about coming fully alive with
- 00:02:50the church and in the church because I'm
- 00:02:53not sure we can do that without that
- 00:02:57component in our lives and so the the
- 00:03:00way I'm going to talk about it the way
- 00:03:01I've kind of framed it is I titled it
- 00:03:03Church cartography navigating the
- 00:03:06complexities of Jesus's Community I'm a
- 00:03:10big map guy Direction guy ever since I
- 00:03:13was a kid I love looking at Maps always
- 00:03:16interested in cartography like when I
- 00:03:18open up Lord of the Rings that map
- 00:03:20Middle Earth epic I think it's so cool
- 00:03:24when I was on road trips with my dad I
- 00:03:26would study the map and I always just
- 00:03:29like was
- 00:03:30directionally literate like I I know
- 00:03:32which way is north south but then when I
- 00:03:34got married and we tried to talk to my
- 00:03:35wife about hey like let's walk west or
- 00:03:38hey just Drive North this direction she
- 00:03:40look at me like I was stupid like which
- 00:03:43way is this and so maybe some of us are
- 00:03:46directionally challenged but that's my
- 00:03:47wife Jordan my son janer and uh I might
- 00:03:52be uh good with cartography but what
- 00:03:54Jordan's way better better at than I am
- 00:03:57is emotional craphy she is so good at
- 00:04:00naming expressing empathizing with
- 00:04:03emotions and she married me she's like
- 00:04:05oh I didn't realize I Married an
- 00:04:06emotional toddler but I think we'll get
- 00:04:08through this and I think all of us at
- 00:04:12some level have struggled with church
- 00:04:15cartography
- 00:04:17navigating the church and Jesus's
- 00:04:20community and I wish I could hear each
- 00:04:23and every one of your stories about the
- 00:04:25ways you've been healed by the church
- 00:04:28the ways you've been hurt by the church
- 00:04:31your experiences growing up current
- 00:04:34experiences the time you puked at 3:00
- 00:04:36a.m. at the lockin we all have a complex
- 00:04:41story with the church and I'd be so
- 00:04:44curious to hear what your relationship
- 00:04:46status with the churches right now is it
- 00:04:49good is it bad is it
- 00:04:53connected is it
- 00:04:55disconnected and I would love to be able
- 00:04:59to hear here uh just your authentic raw
- 00:05:03experience because the church is
- 00:05:06complicated and it's complicated because
- 00:05:09it's full of us it's full of people and
- 00:05:12when we think about church I think it's
- 00:05:15always important to think about it not
- 00:05:18as a building not as a location but to
- 00:05:21think of it as people because that's
- 00:05:22what the word church literally means
- 00:05:24Greek word eklesia it means community so
- 00:05:27anytime you read the word church hear
- 00:05:29the word church you can just replace
- 00:05:30that with Community Church is a
- 00:05:33community of people that is passionately
- 00:05:36pursuing Jesus that have a shared
- 00:05:38purpose that have a shared life together
- 00:05:42that's Jesus's vision of the church but
- 00:05:45we
- 00:05:46know that the church doesn't always meet
- 00:05:48that
- 00:05:50expectation doesn't always do what it
- 00:05:53should do there are times where it
- 00:05:56abuses people it hurts people it
- 00:05:59traumatizes people and so navigating
- 00:06:02this conversation in how we interact
- 00:06:06with the
- 00:06:07church is complicated it's complicated
- 00:06:11and touchy and again I wish I could know
- 00:06:13all your
- 00:06:14stories but I hope today that you can
- 00:06:16walk away feeling heard feeling seen and
- 00:06:21feeling
- 00:06:22encouraged so I'm just going to lay out
- 00:06:24my cards on the table and frame our
- 00:06:26conversation with some scriptures to
- 00:06:29just or orent ourselves as we have this
- 00:06:31conversation so first scripture first
- 00:06:34John 5 uh John's writing to a church
- 00:06:37he's ending his first letter and this is
- 00:06:40what he says he says this is the
- 00:06:41testimony this is the story we tell that
- 00:06:44God has given us eternal life and this
- 00:06:47eternal life is in his son Whoever has
- 00:06:51the son has life whoever does not have
- 00:06:53the Son of God does not have life so the
- 00:06:56first thing I'm convinced of I'm
- 00:06:58convinced that Jesus is life when we
- 00:07:01talk about coming fully alive Jesus is
- 00:07:03at the center and Jesus is beautiful
- 00:07:07he's good he teaches us how to be human
- 00:07:10and when we talk about any area of our
- 00:07:12life when it comes to feeling dead
- 00:07:14feeling alive being healthy being whole
- 00:07:17Jesus has to be part of the equation
- 00:07:20second scripture Hebrews 10
- 00:07:2324-25 let us consider how we may spur
- 00:07:26one another on toward love in Good Deeds
- 00:07:31not giving up meeting together as some
- 00:07:33are in the habit of doing but
- 00:07:35encouraging one another in all the more
- 00:07:38as you see the day
- 00:07:40approaching second thing I'm convinced
- 00:07:42of is the indispensable reality of the
- 00:07:47church to come Fully
- 00:07:48Alive I don't think the church is
- 00:07:51optional I don't think it's plan b or Z
- 00:07:54I think it's Jesus's plan a and his only
- 00:07:57plan for us in our formation
- 00:08:00in our life in our Hess and I think it's
- 00:08:03desperately needed and when the church
- 00:08:05is doing what it should it is the hope
- 00:08:08of the world it's beautiful it's healing
- 00:08:11and Jesus when he was teaching his first
- 00:08:14community of followers his dream was
- 00:08:17that they would spread communities of
- 00:08:19Jesus followers across the world and the
- 00:08:23third verse I just frame for us is our
- 00:08:26theme verse John 10:10 and I want to
- 00:08:29include the whole verse the thief comes
- 00:08:33only to steal and kill and
- 00:08:36destroy I have come that they may have
- 00:08:39life and have it to the full so the
- 00:08:42third thing I'm convinced of is that I'm
- 00:08:44convinced both the enemy and Jesus do
- 00:08:48their best work inside the
- 00:08:51church and I Think Jesus knew that and I
- 00:08:55think when the enemy can get inside the
- 00:08:59church and steal and kill and destroy it
- 00:09:02is
- 00:09:04devastating and uh there are stories
- 00:09:07that we could read online of churches
- 00:09:09doing the exact opposite of what church
- 00:09:12should be doing we can hear stories of
- 00:09:14pastors abusing power and trying to
- 00:09:17become celebrities rather than servants
- 00:09:19we can hear stories of emotional
- 00:09:22manipulation and it is horrid and it
- 00:09:25breaks my heart and I'm confident it
- 00:09:27breaks Jesus's heart and I'm also uh
- 00:09:31convinced that Jesus does his best work
- 00:09:33inside the church that we experience his
- 00:09:36presence that we find healing and
- 00:09:38wholeness that our lives can find their
- 00:09:41purpose in the community that all of our
- 00:09:44souls desperately long for inside the
- 00:09:47church and when it's beautiful it is
- 00:09:49what we need so I'm not here to shame
- 00:09:52you about your church attendance at all
- 00:09:56I'm not here to uh try to even uh
- 00:10:01convince you necessarily like you need
- 00:10:03to go to church this Sunday here's what
- 00:10:05I want to convince you of is that the
- 00:10:07church is worth fighting for and worth
- 00:10:09persevering in and uh I think there's a
- 00:10:14lot of people and I see this with people
- 00:10:16in in every age demographic that they
- 00:10:20have a bad experience with the church
- 00:10:22and then they write off the church
- 00:10:24completely and they say the church is
- 00:10:26toxic it's unhelpful I never want to be
- 00:10:28connected to that thing again and I
- 00:10:31understand that response but again I
- 00:10:33think the church is Jesus plan a and
- 00:10:36just because one church is unhealthy
- 00:10:39does not mean that all churches are bad
- 00:10:42I think about it like this if you go to
- 00:10:44a Bad Doctor the solution isn't to quit
- 00:10:48all medicine the solution is to find a
- 00:10:50healthy doctor and I Think Jesus being
- 00:10:55the great physician knows that our souls
- 00:10:58need Doctor need the church need
- 00:11:01community and so I personally I have a
- 00:11:05lot of reasons to hate the church and
- 00:11:08there's a lot of reasons why I shouldn't
- 00:11:10even be up here with you today talking
- 00:11:12about the need for the church for us to
- 00:11:15come fully alive so I'm going to just
- 00:11:17share some of my story in the hope that
- 00:11:20maybe you relate to some of it maybe you
- 00:11:22can feel seen heard and it can help you
- 00:11:25process your story so
- 00:11:29I didn't grow up in a church I grew up
- 00:11:31in a home that didn't talk about God
- 00:11:34Jesus did not really have connection to
- 00:11:37church and my parents divorced when I
- 00:11:40was young and it was a pretty
- 00:11:41disconnected home and all that to say I
- 00:11:45was a young kid who longed for
- 00:11:47connection for love for purpose and I
- 00:11:52wasn't quite sure where to find that and
- 00:11:55in the midst of that uh when I was about
- 00:11:5712 or 13 I had a friend invite me to
- 00:12:00youth group The Standard New Year's Eve
- 00:12:03lockin and I got invited in and I uh
- 00:12:08loved it I mean stayed up all night
- 00:12:10played video games drank soda the whole
- 00:12:12bit but I really love two things one it
- 00:12:15was the first time I ever heard about
- 00:12:17Jesus and I was fascinated I was
- 00:12:21fascinated by his wisdom by the truth
- 00:12:24that he held by the love that I noticed
- 00:12:27and I could not get enough of it and I
- 00:12:30wanted more of that but honestly what I
- 00:12:33was way more enamored with was that
- 00:12:36Community it was the first time in my
- 00:12:38life that I experienced a community of
- 00:12:41genuine love and I wanted it so bad so I
- 00:12:45got super plugged into that church
- 00:12:47Liberty Church of Christ in Liberty
- 00:12:48Indiana that small community was
- 00:12:52absolutely beautiful and helped me
- 00:12:54through my high school years through a
- 00:12:56graduation party for me I got me
- 00:12:58connected and then I went off to college
- 00:13:00to do youth ministry because of the
- 00:13:02impact they had on me first job out of
- 00:13:04college was at a mega church uh and I
- 00:13:08was I drank the Kool-Aid I'm like mega
- 00:13:11church is it let's go I mean they got
- 00:13:14all this stuff all the lights all the
- 00:13:17action so many people they're making
- 00:13:19such a big impact from that uh got
- 00:13:21connected to a church in
- 00:13:23Oklahoma uh that was my first job and I
- 00:13:26know I'm talking about as like someone
- 00:13:27who who's worked at churches but I think
- 00:13:29this is applicable for anyone who's
- 00:13:30attended churches and so I got connected
- 00:13:33to this church uh in Oklahoma and uh
- 00:13:37really large church and it was the
- 00:13:40absolute worst experience of my life it
- 00:13:43was abusive it was like hell on Earth
- 00:13:48here's what I tell people never live in
- 00:13:50Oklahoma it's the worst place on the
- 00:13:52planet if you can avoid Oklahoma I think
- 00:13:55your life will be better uh but uh it
- 00:14:00was truly 83 days of hell and when I uh
- 00:14:07got let go after 83 days at my first job
- 00:14:10after college so if you last 83 days
- 00:14:13longer uh or at least 83 days in your
- 00:14:16first job after college you'll be doing
- 00:14:18better than me and uh I was like I'm I
- 00:14:21don't think I'm ever doing this church
- 00:14:22thing
- 00:14:23again and it took me about a year to
- 00:14:26heal I still was connected to church but
- 00:14:29not really involved at all uh what I
- 00:14:32actually did was I went in I was an
- 00:14:33admissions counselor for my college
- 00:14:35Johnson University and I thought well at
- 00:14:38least I can talk about the place I just
- 00:14:40went to school for four years so if you
- 00:14:42don't know what to do after college
- 00:14:43maybe you can be an admissions counselor
- 00:14:46and I um after that I was like okay I'm
- 00:14:49going to give this thing a try again
- 00:14:51through I think God's hand got connect
- 00:14:52to a small Church up in Providence Rhode
- 00:14:55Island so I was in Rhode Island uh with
- 00:14:58the church and and did not know it but
- 00:15:00the church was financially wrecked
- 00:15:03within 6 months of me getting there the
- 00:15:05church shut down all the staff quit and
- 00:15:07I had to help find people find new
- 00:15:09churches so I was 0 for two I'm like
- 00:15:13okay this is this is not good and yet uh
- 00:15:18I got connected to a really beautiful
- 00:15:20Church community in East Providence and
- 00:15:22I was able to uh build the youth
- 00:15:25ministry there and it was a beautiful
- 00:15:28community and it was healing and I
- 00:15:32really uh found life there and found
- 00:15:35life in the church and it was a church
- 00:15:36that was growing Church Plant
- 00:15:38attractional uh a lot of good things I
- 00:15:41got curious wanted to explore some
- 00:15:43things so I actually got connected to uh
- 00:15:45and helped start a new church in Boston
- 00:15:47Massachusetts and it was a missional
- 00:15:50house Church type Community super local
- 00:15:52super incarnational and I was like man
- 00:15:55this is going to be so much better than
- 00:15:56a tractional church and I got to do a
- 00:16:00lot of cool things there and uh it was
- 00:16:03cool because we we broke a lot of norms
- 00:16:05and that sort of thing from there I
- 00:16:07realized you know whether a church is 20
- 00:16:10people or 200 people or 2,000 or 20,000
- 00:16:14we can all kind of have the same sort of
- 00:16:17issues and so through a crazy uh series
- 00:16:21of events I got connected to Christ
- 00:16:23Church Anglican in Overland Park and I'm
- 00:16:25Anglican now which never planned to
- 00:16:29and uh I'm telling you I'm in love it's
- 00:16:32great I feel like I found my spot I feel
- 00:16:35like it's formation first I feel like
- 00:16:37it's a family I feel connected I feel
- 00:16:40whole and I think I got connected to a
- 00:16:42healthy Church which I'm really grateful
- 00:16:43for I'm sure there are messed up angle
- 00:16:45churches out there but I didn't find one
- 00:16:47which I'm really grateful for my
- 00:16:49favorite Mike jerson story is that in
- 00:16:52between getting uh that as I was looking
- 00:16:55for that job I applied for another job
- 00:16:57which is the director Campus Ministries
- 00:16:59at Friends
- 00:17:00University
- 00:17:02and I call
- 00:17:05Mike and I'm like dude I'm really
- 00:17:07excited for this job opportunity he's
- 00:17:09like what's the job opportunity I was
- 00:17:10like director of Campus Ministries at
- 00:17:12Friends University he was like oh I
- 00:17:14applied for that job as well and uh long
- 00:17:18story short we both got into the final
- 00:17:20round I actually bowed out because I was
- 00:17:22like this place will be way better with
- 00:17:23Mike than it would be with me and uh now
- 00:17:26you have Mike as your campus Pastor so
- 00:17:29you can learn what you uh luckily
- 00:17:31avoided okay so um here's what I'll say
- 00:17:35in telling my story with all that is one
- 00:17:39it would have been really easy for me to
- 00:17:41give up on the church and I really
- 00:17:43wanted
- 00:17:44to and I'm so glad I didn't I'm so glad
- 00:17:48that I didn't and I had to do a lot of
- 00:17:51processing a lot of healing I had to
- 00:17:54work out my my stuff with it but I just
- 00:17:57want to say a few things that no matter
- 00:18:00where you are in your journey it's okay
- 00:18:03that it's messy and it's okay that it's
- 00:18:06hard and it's okay if you don't have it
- 00:18:09figured out the people who have been
- 00:18:12part of the same church their entire
- 00:18:14lives or same network of churches that's
- 00:18:16beautiful I think that that's Jesus's
- 00:18:19heart and
- 00:18:20design and I Think Jesus isn't
- 00:18:25territorial meaning the kingdom is large
- 00:18:29and you have to find a church that fits
- 00:18:32your spirit spiritual personality your
- 00:18:35gifts your fit and so we should look for
- 00:18:38churches where we serve and can connect
- 00:18:40and the Holy Spirit should lead us but I
- 00:18:43think you exploring and finding a church
- 00:18:47that feels like home is a really good
- 00:18:49and beautiful thing so I have friends
- 00:18:51who grew up Catholic who are now Baptist
- 00:18:54and I have friends who grew up Baptist
- 00:18:56who are now Catholic I have friends who
- 00:18:59I never thought they'd be Pentecostals
- 00:19:01and they're uh they're they're doing
- 00:19:03some stuff with the Holy Spirit that's
- 00:19:04pretty cool I have some friends that uh
- 00:19:08currently are trying to sort through
- 00:19:11things but whether it's a church that's
- 00:19:13focused on Justice or it's Evangelical
- 00:19:17or it's Anglican or it's Catholic the
- 00:19:19Kingdom's large and different types of
- 00:19:22churches speak to different types of
- 00:19:24people and different types of churches
- 00:19:25have different strengths weaknesses but
- 00:19:28I think I think we have to be careful
- 00:19:29there's going to be a scale up here that
- 00:19:31I just want you to think about is that I
- 00:19:34think we can go one of two sides one is
- 00:19:38disconnection again I've been hurt by
- 00:19:40church so I'm not going or uh just like
- 00:19:45an apathy that we're not connected to a
- 00:19:49community even though for Jesus it's a
- 00:19:51top priority in our spiritual formation
- 00:19:54or I think we can go to consumerism I
- 00:19:56think we can uh change churches like we
- 00:20:00change outfits I think that if a church
- 00:20:03has one flaw we leave and there's no
- 00:20:06perfect Church you will sometimes be
- 00:20:09hurt even by the best of churches
- 00:20:11because a church is people a church is
- 00:20:14community that's why the New Testament
- 00:20:16talks so much about unity and conflict
- 00:20:20resolution and health and all those
- 00:20:21things I think the best place to be is
- 00:20:24faithful presence you find a spot the
- 00:20:27Holy Spirit leads you and you stick with
- 00:20:29it and the Holy Spirit can help you find
- 00:20:33that sort of spot and the ideal is that
- 00:20:35we belong to a faithful Community for a
- 00:20:38for a long period of time because that's
- 00:20:40where the formation happens that's where
- 00:20:42the development happens so that's the
- 00:20:44ideal and it's messy in between and
- 00:20:48that's okay that's okay I think that uh
- 00:20:53there are people
- 00:20:55who really believe that they have the
- 00:20:57corner on the mark market and would not
- 00:21:00encourage you to find a healthy place
- 00:21:02you know my youth pastor the guy who led
- 00:21:04me to Christ in that church of Christ
- 00:21:06because I'm Anglican now he uh he's like
- 00:21:09I'm not sure uh you know I'm not sure
- 00:21:11how solid your faith is because you're
- 00:21:13Anglican instead of Church of Christ and
- 00:21:16I would just say again Jesus isn't
- 00:21:18territorial hey if you're a Quaker
- 00:21:21that's awesome if you go to friend's
- 00:21:23University and you're not Quaker that's
- 00:21:25okay too right the kingdom is a big
- 00:21:28place and I'll give us three kind of
- 00:21:30guard rails as we think about connecting
- 00:21:33to a church as we process our her as we
- 00:21:36process where we're at is one I think a
- 00:21:39church needs to have a high
- 00:21:41christology I Think Jesus has to be
- 00:21:44front and center True North he's The
- 00:21:46Guiding Mark if you find a church that
- 00:21:49worships Wonderbread probably not a good
- 00:21:51church right you need a church that
- 00:21:53worships Jesus and really a church that
- 00:21:56worships father Son and Holy Spirit
- 00:21:58Arian healthy theology two I think a
- 00:22:03healthy church has authority of
- 00:22:05scripture I think in our world with so
- 00:22:07many different truths I think it has to
- 00:22:09be based on scripture as The Guiding
- 00:22:13truth of our lives and you can find a
- 00:22:15lot of churches where that's not the
- 00:22:16case and I think that is absolutely
- 00:22:19essential third thing uh just as
- 00:22:22important is emotional health and this
- 00:22:25one can be really hard to find again not
- 00:22:28perfect
- 00:22:29not everyone's going to get a ride all
- 00:22:30time but generally is it a place that's
- 00:22:33emotionally healthy that doesn't run its
- 00:22:36volunteers ragged that is able to give
- 00:22:40people space and rest that treats humans
- 00:22:43like humans that allows people to make
- 00:22:46mistakes and they're not judged that
- 00:22:48validates your experience in your
- 00:22:51emotions I know that as you think about
- 00:22:54that um maybe that's that's difficult to
- 00:22:58find maybe as I talk about all this
- 00:23:01there's just this uh emotional barrier
- 00:23:05and I just want to say that's okay it's
- 00:23:08okay Jesus is with you in that and Jesus
- 00:23:11wants you to be connected to his body I
- 00:23:14love what Mike says about Chapel that uh
- 00:23:17this is the big SE church but this isn't
- 00:23:19your church right we all need the body
- 00:23:21of Christ we all need a place to connect
- 00:23:24and belong and in the midst of that I'll
- 00:23:26just say as well man I think some
- 00:23:28preference are okay you know like one of
- 00:23:30my preferences is I don't do smoke
- 00:23:33machines sorry like if your church has
- 00:23:36smoke machines it's not a good fit for
- 00:23:37me and for some people mega church smoke
- 00:23:40machines that's great and that's a good
- 00:23:43thing but you also kind of have to know
- 00:23:45what what your your thing is for me too
- 00:23:48communion every week is kind of an
- 00:23:51essential because I think that uh I I
- 00:23:55think that that's so important for
- 00:23:57connection with Christ scripture but
- 00:23:59there's a lot of things that can be
- 00:24:00nuanced but I would say your preferences
- 00:24:02matter but most of all I think you
- 00:24:06should be asking how can I contribute to
- 00:24:08this community how can I find my purpose
- 00:24:11here and we don't want to be
- 00:24:13consumers so hear me say this keep
- 00:24:17persevering with the church that's what
- 00:24:20I want you to hear is that in the church
- 00:24:24we do find life the church for a
- 00:24:27follower of Jesus
- 00:24:29is not
- 00:24:30optional and unfortunately that could be
- 00:24:33a contentious statement today in our
- 00:24:36world but I'll just say for a follower
- 00:24:38of Jesus the church is not optional it
- 00:24:41is essential and if we want to find life
- 00:24:44in every single part of our Lives the
- 00:24:45church has to be part of the equation
- 00:24:48not in a cultural sense not in a I'm
- 00:24:51just doing this to look good or to be
- 00:24:53moral in a sense of belonging to a
- 00:24:56community that one another's one another
- 00:24:58that loves each other that supports one
- 00:25:00another and where we can be known where
- 00:25:02we can love people where we can find
- 00:25:05healing and wholeness and every single
- 00:25:07person on the planet needs that and I
- 00:25:09think when a church does that well it is
- 00:25:12beautiful uh I've heard people say you
- 00:25:14know the church is the bride of Christ
- 00:25:16and divorce isn't an option we have to
- 00:25:21figure this out in the midst of the pain
- 00:25:23and just because it's hard doesn't mean
- 00:25:27it's bad and Jesus knows the formative
- 00:25:30Journey we go on as we journey with
- 00:25:34people and so you are the
- 00:25:39church and also we need the church to
- 00:25:43connect and uh there's so much in this
- 00:25:46conversation I can't share like when is
- 00:25:49it time to to find a church when is it
- 00:25:51time to to heal when when's it a Time to
- 00:25:54Leave a church there's so much there
- 00:25:57that I'm sure Mike Miranda or myself
- 00:26:00would love to talk with you about
- 00:26:01Professor would love to talk with you
- 00:26:03about but just hear me that even in the
- 00:26:06midst of the hardship finding life in
- 00:26:08the church is worth it so I'm actually
- 00:26:10going to throw my info up on the screen
- 00:26:12couple things is that my phone number's
- 00:26:14there if you want to text me if you want
- 00:26:17to connect and there's anything I could
- 00:26:19do to help you process I would love to
- 00:26:21do that also that QR code has a cool uh
- 00:26:24few things that I'm doing I do this
- 00:26:26thing called form weekly four things for
- 00:26:27your form every week where I send you a
- 00:26:30thought a question a quote and a
- 00:26:31resource to help you in your journey
- 00:26:33with Christ and then I'm leading a
- 00:26:35retreat in mid November on a rule of
- 00:26:37Life developing an intentional plan with
- 00:26:39Jesus and Retreats have changed my
- 00:26:41formation and in my life and sometimes
- 00:26:44we need to get away and uh be with Jesus
- 00:26:47and so that's an opportunity in mid
- 00:26:49November I'd love to help you connect
- 00:26:51with but most of all I'd love to pray
- 00:26:53for you so can we pray I encourage you
- 00:26:57um to no matter where you're at with the
- 00:26:59church right now just have a posture of
- 00:27:01openness and allow Jesus to speak to you
- 00:27:05so Jesus we invite you uh to speak to us
- 00:27:09we know you're here we know your
- 00:27:11presence is ministering to us and
- 00:27:14wherever we're at whether we're super
- 00:27:16connected to a church and is healthy
- 00:27:17encourage us to be the church there and
- 00:27:21to find life and to be life and God we
- 00:27:25pray for those of us who uh have a
- 00:27:28complicated relationship that you would
- 00:27:32help bring Clarity bring peace find the
- 00:27:36right community and God would we be your
- 00:27:39church in the world and would you help
- 00:27:41us in every part of our Lives honor you
- 00:27:45and Jesus you get all the glory in Jesus
- 00:27:48name
- 00:27:50amen
- 00:27:51amen let's give it up for Jacob thanks
- 00:27:56brother a lot a lot of wisdom in a short
- 00:28:00amount of time Jacob um to Echo what he
- 00:28:03said a lot of this might be a
- 00:28:05springboard for more
- 00:28:07conversation uh maybe there's an
- 00:28:09invitation there where you go yeah I'm
- 00:28:12I'm in one of the seasons and with love
- 00:28:14to consider this or talk more and so I
- 00:28:16just want to Echo what he said we're
- 00:28:17available we this is what we do this is
- 00:28:19what we love to do and you will not be
- 00:28:21met with judgment um this will be a safe
- 00:28:24way to to communicate that so would'
- 00:28:26love to talk more Jacob one of the of
- 00:28:28the things we're doing with our theme
- 00:28:29Fully live is is uh asking some three
- 00:28:32questions just to help us you spur on
- 00:28:35our creativity and how we uh live fully
- 00:28:37and so I'd love to do that now uh just
- 00:28:39take a few seconds here uh what personal
- 00:28:42practice or habit or discipline is
- 00:28:45helping you live fully right now is
- 00:28:47bringing you life right now yeah this is
- 00:28:49good uh I love a thinker and writer
- 00:28:52named Andy Crouch he talked about when
- 00:28:55he was at Dartmouth iag School that's
- 00:28:57super intense competitive how he would
- 00:29:00uh practice Sabbath he'd practice a day
- 00:29:01of rest every Sunday and how it helped
- 00:29:04him Thrive and for me uh I've been
- 00:29:08practicing Sabbath for about two years
- 00:29:10three years now specifically with that
- 00:29:12how do I encourage you is uh a no Tech
- 00:29:15day every week and for me uh Friday
- 00:29:19night into Saturday night uh I don't
- 00:29:22touch my phone for 24 hours I stop I
- 00:29:25rest I spend time with people I love I
- 00:29:27eat really good food and it's a practice
- 00:29:30that's changed my life and I feel so
- 00:29:33much more connected rooted alive healthy
- 00:29:37and um you know Richard Foster would
- 00:29:39talk about how with tech it's a good
- 00:29:41idea to do uh take a break for one day a
- 00:29:44week one week a month one month a year
- 00:29:47and uh I'm not at that level but one day
- 00:29:50a week I think is really healthy to have
- 00:29:52a day of rest and no Tech and no work
- 00:29:55it's great it's great it's been a theme
- 00:29:56we've been talking about about in this
- 00:29:58space too so um what if you go back and
- 00:30:01tell your your college self in undergrad
- 00:30:03like one thing as you look back what
- 00:30:05would that be you know I was the kind of
- 00:30:09college student I don't know about you
- 00:30:10but I did a little bit of everything so
- 00:30:12I had a different job all four years on
- 00:30:14campus I jumped from thing to thing I
- 00:30:17kind of wanted the full experience and
- 00:30:18that's great if I could go back I tell
- 00:30:21myself buddy just just stick with one
- 00:30:24thing and just write it out I think that
- 00:30:26there's a rich experience in being able
- 00:30:29to have some consistency and I think uh
- 00:30:32in my fomo I just went from thing to
- 00:30:35thing and I wish I would have uh been
- 00:30:37confident in in sticking with what I
- 00:30:40love and then what's some good news you
- 00:30:43have to share with
- 00:30:44us uh you know this one was like the
- 00:30:47hardest for me to think of which maybe
- 00:30:48says something about my personality but
- 00:30:50I uh my you saw a picture of my baby boy
- 00:30:54janer he's 9 months old today and uh man
- 00:30:57good news of of being a father is just
- 00:30:59like the best thing in my life right now
- 00:31:01it's so great so much joy and um you
- 00:31:06know it comes way faster than what you
- 00:31:08think I even tried to delay it in like a
- 00:31:11decade from now a lot of you might have
- 00:31:13kids so it's a joy don't be afraid it's
- 00:31:17awesome well thank you brother I'm gonna
- 00:31:19I'm gonna invite ke uh Professor ke keer
- 00:31:22up to close us in a blessing so and then
- 00:31:26we'll wrap up
- 00:31:30for the blessing can we uh ceue up the
- 00:31:33smoke machines kind of get that going
- 00:31:37and so since our uh our brother Jacob is
- 00:31:40is Anglican now you stay up here Jacob
- 00:31:42come on since our brother Jacob is
- 00:31:45anglian now and uh loves some communion
- 00:31:49um how about a simple but powerful
- 00:31:54Eucharistic blessing to send you out
- 00:31:58just as Jesus
- 00:32:00was
- 00:32:03taken
- 00:32:05broken
- 00:32:07blessed and
- 00:32:09given may you my friends be taken
- 00:32:14broken
- 00:32:15blessed and given for the good of the
- 00:32:18world in the name of the father son and
- 00:32:21holy spirit amen
