    thank you
  • 00:00:03
team well I am uh I'm thrilled to have
  • 00:00:08
my brother Jacob vanan here with us let
  • 00:00:11
me tell you a little bit about Jacob
  • 00:00:14
vanan I met Jacob in the friends uh
  • 00:00:18
    masters of Christian spiritual formation
  • 00:00:21
and Leadership program that is uh
  • 00:00:24
directed by Professor Kei kler who is
  • 00:00:27
here with us and James Brian Smith and
  • 00:00:30
uh and and others and so uh when I first
  • 00:00:33
met Jacob uh in the program there was
  • 00:00:37
one other guy that was a youth pastor
  • 00:00:39
and I was a youth pastor at the time so
  • 00:00:40
I was like Hey we're going to be fast
  • 00:00:42
friends quickly we have lots to talk
  • 00:00:44
about and as we went through the program
  • 00:00:47
became friends realized that we have uh
  • 00:00:50
a lot in common and also challenge each
  • 00:00:52
other in great ways and so Jacob has
  • 00:00:54
always been a person to me um from the
  • 00:00:57
moment I met him that he just puts
  • 00:00:59
himself fully in to anything he does he
  • 00:01:01
lives his life with intentionality with
  • 00:01:04
courage and boldness uh I can just brag
  • 00:01:06
about you for a long time Jacob because
  • 00:01:07
I love you but um currently his vocation
  • 00:01:10
he is a uh director of student life at
  • 00:01:12
Christ Church Anglican Church in um
  • 00:01:15
Kansas City yep Overland Park Overland
  • 00:01:17
Park and um and uh is married has a has
  • 00:01:21
a a little baby well not a little baby
  • 00:01:23
anymore nine months nine months now okay
  • 00:01:26
uh so you're starting to have another
  • 00:01:28
one no never mind we don't want to talk
  • 00:01:29
    about that um
  • 00:01:31
so uh but anyways I'm so excited when
  • 00:01:34
when Jacob and I were talking about what
  • 00:01:35
message he might bring to this community
  • 00:01:38
um he he had an idea and I thought this
  • 00:01:41
would be really helpful this would be
  • 00:01:43
really helpful because with some of the
  • 00:01:44
    conversations I've had with students
  • 00:01:47
about church and church hurt and church
  • 00:01:49
struggle and what does it look like to
  • 00:01:51
find a and all these questions uh he he
  • 00:01:54
had it on his heart to talk about that
  • 00:01:55
and so I'm so excited would you welcome
  • 00:01:58
    Jacob vangan thanks guys thanks
  • 00:02:02
Mike hey guys thanks it's great to be
  • 00:02:05
with you wish I could be with you all
  • 00:02:06
the time but uh three- hour drive can't
  • 00:02:08
do it all the time but so grateful for
  • 00:02:11
the community of friends so grateful to
  • 00:02:12
get to be here and you have an amazing
  • 00:02:15
campus Pastor in Mike and is doing with
  • 00:02:18
the campus ministry really is incredible
  • 00:02:20
and so I hope you utilize that because
  • 00:02:22
the opportunities you have here at
  • 00:02:24
Friends University uh are great and I'm
  • 00:02:27
honored to be with you as I uh talk
  • 00:02:30
about a topic that I'm passionate about
  • 00:02:32
and a topic that I'm not sure I've heard
  • 00:02:35
anyone talk about in a helpful authentic
  • 00:02:37
compelling way when I heard the theme
  • 00:02:39
that you have of coming fully alive I
  • 00:02:43
think such an important part of that is
  • 00:02:47
to talk about coming fully alive with
  • 00:02:50
the church and in the church because I'm
  • 00:02:53
not sure we can do that without that
  • 00:02:57
component in our lives and so the the
  • 00:03:00
way I'm going to talk about it the way
  • 00:03:01
I've kind of framed it is I titled it
  • 00:03:03
    Church cartography navigating the
  • 00:03:06
    complexities of Jesus's Community I'm a
  • 00:03:10
big map guy Direction guy ever since I
  • 00:03:13
was a kid I love looking at Maps always
  • 00:03:16
interested in cartography like when I
  • 00:03:18
open up Lord of the Rings that map
  • 00:03:20
Middle Earth epic I think it's so cool
  • 00:03:24
when I was on road trips with my dad I
  • 00:03:26
would study the map and I always just
  • 00:03:29
    like was
  • 00:03:30
directionally literate like I I know
  • 00:03:32
which way is north south but then when I
  • 00:03:34
got married and we tried to talk to my
  • 00:03:35
wife about hey like let's walk west or
  • 00:03:38
hey just Drive North this direction she
  • 00:03:40
look at me like I was stupid like which
  • 00:03:43
way is this and so maybe some of us are
  • 00:03:46
    directionally challenged but that's my
  • 00:03:47
wife Jordan my son janer and uh I might
  • 00:03:52
be uh good with cartography but what
  • 00:03:54
Jordan's way better better at than I am
  • 00:03:57
is emotional craphy she is so good at
  • 00:04:00
    naming expressing empathizing with
  • 00:04:03
emotions and she married me she's like
  • 00:04:05
    oh I didn't realize I Married an
  • 00:04:06
emotional toddler but I think we'll get
  • 00:04:08
through this and I think all of us at
  • 00:04:12
some level have struggled with church
  • 00:04:15
    cartography
  • 00:04:17
    navigating the church and Jesus's
  • 00:04:20
community and I wish I could hear each
  • 00:04:23
and every one of your stories about the
  • 00:04:25
ways you've been healed by the church
  • 00:04:28
the ways you've been hurt by the church
  • 00:04:31
    your experiences growing up current
  • 00:04:34
experiences the time you puked at 3:00
  • 00:04:36
a.m. at the lockin we all have a complex
  • 00:04:41
story with the church and I'd be so
  • 00:04:44
curious to hear what your relationship
  • 00:04:46
status with the churches right now is it
  • 00:04:49
good is it bad is it
  • 00:04:53
    connected is it
  • 00:04:55
disconnected and I would love to be able
  • 00:04:59
to hear here uh just your authentic raw
  • 00:05:03
    experience because the church is
  • 00:05:06
    complicated and it's complicated because
  • 00:05:09
it's full of us it's full of people and
  • 00:05:12
when we think about church I think it's
  • 00:05:15
always important to think about it not
  • 00:05:18
as a building not as a location but to
  • 00:05:21
think of it as people because that's
  • 00:05:22
what the word church literally means
  • 00:05:24
Greek word eklesia it means community so
  • 00:05:27
anytime you read the word church hear
  • 00:05:29
the word church you can just replace
  • 00:05:30
that with Community Church is a
  • 00:05:33
community of people that is passionately
  • 00:05:36
pursuing Jesus that have a shared
  • 00:05:38
purpose that have a shared life together
  • 00:05:42
that's Jesus's vision of the church but
  • 00:05:45
    we
  • 00:05:46
know that the church doesn't always meet
  • 00:05:48
    that
  • 00:05:50
expectation doesn't always do what it
  • 00:05:53
should do there are times where it
  • 00:05:56
abuses people it hurts people it
  • 00:05:59
    traumatizes people and so navigating
  • 00:06:02
this conversation in how we interact
  • 00:06:06
    with the
  • 00:06:07
    church is complicated it's complicated
  • 00:06:11
and touchy and again I wish I could know
  • 00:06:13
    all your
  • 00:06:14
stories but I hope today that you can
  • 00:06:16
walk away feeling heard feeling seen and
  • 00:06:21
    feeling
  • 00:06:22
encouraged so I'm just going to lay out
  • 00:06:24
my cards on the table and frame our
  • 00:06:26
    conversation with some scriptures to
  • 00:06:29
just or orent ourselves as we have this
  • 00:06:31
    conversation so first scripture first
  • 00:06:34
John 5 uh John's writing to a church
  • 00:06:37
he's ending his first letter and this is
  • 00:06:40
what he says he says this is the
  • 00:06:41
testimony this is the story we tell that
  • 00:06:44
God has given us eternal life and this
  • 00:06:47
eternal life is in his son Whoever has
  • 00:06:51
the son has life whoever does not have
  • 00:06:53
the Son of God does not have life so the
  • 00:06:56
first thing I'm convinced of I'm
  • 00:06:58
convinced that Jesus is life when we
  • 00:07:01
talk about coming fully alive Jesus is
  • 00:07:03
at the center and Jesus is beautiful
  • 00:07:07
he's good he teaches us how to be human
  • 00:07:10
and when we talk about any area of our
  • 00:07:12
life when it comes to feeling dead
  • 00:07:14
feeling alive being healthy being whole
  • 00:07:17
Jesus has to be part of the equation
  • 00:07:20
    second scripture Hebrews 10
  • 00:07:23
24-25 let us consider how we may spur
  • 00:07:26
one another on toward love in Good Deeds
  • 00:07:31
not giving up meeting together as some
  • 00:07:33
are in the habit of doing but
  • 00:07:35
encouraging one another in all the more
  • 00:07:38
    as you see the day
  • 00:07:40
    approaching second thing I'm convinced
  • 00:07:42
of is the indispensable reality of the
  • 00:07:47
    church to come Fully
  • 00:07:48
Alive I don't think the church is
  • 00:07:51
    optional I don't think it's plan b or Z
  • 00:07:54
    I think it's Jesus's plan a and his only
  • 00:07:57
plan for us in our formation
  • 00:08:00
in our life in our Hess and I think it's
  • 00:08:03
desperately needed and when the church
  • 00:08:05
is doing what it should it is the hope
  • 00:08:08
of the world it's beautiful it's healing
  • 00:08:11
and Jesus when he was teaching his first
  • 00:08:14
community of followers his dream was
  • 00:08:17
that they would spread communities of
  • 00:08:19
Jesus followers across the world and the
  • 00:08:23
third verse I just frame for us is our
  • 00:08:26
theme verse John 10:10 and I want to
  • 00:08:29
include the whole verse the thief comes
  • 00:08:33
only to steal and kill and
  • 00:08:36
destroy I have come that they may have
  • 00:08:39
life and have it to the full so the
  • 00:08:42
third thing I'm convinced of is that I'm
  • 00:08:44
convinced both the enemy and Jesus do
  • 00:08:48
    their best work inside the
  • 00:08:51
church and I Think Jesus knew that and I
  • 00:08:55
think when the enemy can get inside the
  • 00:08:59
church and steal and kill and destroy it
  • 00:09:02
    is
  • 00:09:04
devastating and uh there are stories
  • 00:09:07
that we could read online of churches
  • 00:09:09
doing the exact opposite of what church
  • 00:09:12
should be doing we can hear stories of
  • 00:09:14
pastors abusing power and trying to
  • 00:09:17
    become celebrities rather than servants
  • 00:09:19
we can hear stories of emotional
  • 00:09:22
manipulation and it is horrid and it
  • 00:09:25
breaks my heart and I'm confident it
  • 00:09:27
breaks Jesus's heart and I'm also uh
  • 00:09:31
convinced that Jesus does his best work
  • 00:09:33
inside the church that we experience his
  • 00:09:36
presence that we find healing and
  • 00:09:38
wholeness that our lives can find their
  • 00:09:41
purpose in the community that all of our
  • 00:09:44
souls desperately long for inside the
  • 00:09:47
church and when it's beautiful it is
  • 00:09:49
what we need so I'm not here to shame
  • 00:09:52
you about your church attendance at all
  • 00:09:56
I'm not here to uh try to even uh
  • 00:10:01
convince you necessarily like you need
  • 00:10:03
to go to church this Sunday here's what
  • 00:10:05
I want to convince you of is that the
  • 00:10:07
church is worth fighting for and worth
  • 00:10:09
persevering in and uh I think there's a
  • 00:10:14
lot of people and I see this with people
  • 00:10:16
in in every age demographic that they
  • 00:10:20
have a bad experience with the church
  • 00:10:22
and then they write off the church
  • 00:10:24
completely and they say the church is
  • 00:10:26
toxic it's unhelpful I never want to be
  • 00:10:28
connected to that thing again and I
  • 00:10:31
understand that response but again I
  • 00:10:33
think the church is Jesus plan a and
  • 00:10:36
just because one church is unhealthy
  • 00:10:39
does not mean that all churches are bad
  • 00:10:42
I think about it like this if you go to
  • 00:10:44
a Bad Doctor the solution isn't to quit
  • 00:10:48
all medicine the solution is to find a
  • 00:10:50
healthy doctor and I Think Jesus being
  • 00:10:55
the great physician knows that our souls
  • 00:10:58
need Doctor need the church need
  • 00:11:01
community and so I personally I have a
  • 00:11:05
lot of reasons to hate the church and
  • 00:11:08
    there's a lot of reasons why I shouldn't
  • 00:11:10
even be up here with you today talking
  • 00:11:12
about the need for the church for us to
  • 00:11:15
come fully alive so I'm going to just
  • 00:11:17
share some of my story in the hope that
  • 00:11:20
maybe you relate to some of it maybe you
  • 00:11:22
can feel seen heard and it can help you
  • 00:11:25
    process your story so
  • 00:11:29
I didn't grow up in a church I grew up
  • 00:11:31
in a home that didn't talk about God
  • 00:11:34
Jesus did not really have connection to
  • 00:11:37
church and my parents divorced when I
  • 00:11:40
was young and it was a pretty
  • 00:11:41
disconnected home and all that to say I
  • 00:11:45
was a young kid who longed for
  • 00:11:47
connection for love for purpose and I
  • 00:11:52
wasn't quite sure where to find that and
  • 00:11:55
in the midst of that uh when I was about
  • 00:11:57
12 or 13 I had a friend invite me to
  • 00:12:00
youth group The Standard New Year's Eve
  • 00:12:03
lockin and I got invited in and I uh
  • 00:12:08
loved it I mean stayed up all night
  • 00:12:10
played video games drank soda the whole
  • 00:12:12
bit but I really love two things one it
  • 00:12:15
was the first time I ever heard about
  • 00:12:17
Jesus and I was fascinated I was
  • 00:12:21
fascinated by his wisdom by the truth
  • 00:12:24
that he held by the love that I noticed
  • 00:12:27
and I could not get enough of it and I
  • 00:12:30
wanted more of that but honestly what I
  • 00:12:33
was way more enamored with was that
  • 00:12:36
Community it was the first time in my
  • 00:12:38
life that I experienced a community of
  • 00:12:41
genuine love and I wanted it so bad so I
  • 00:12:45
got super plugged into that church
  • 00:12:47
Liberty Church of Christ in Liberty
  • 00:12:48
    Indiana that small community was
  • 00:12:52
    absolutely beautiful and helped me
  • 00:12:54
through my high school years through a
  • 00:12:56
graduation party for me I got me
  • 00:12:58
connected and then I went off to college
  • 00:13:00
to do youth ministry because of the
  • 00:13:02
impact they had on me first job out of
  • 00:13:04
college was at a mega church uh and I
  • 00:13:08
was I drank the Kool-Aid I'm like mega
  • 00:13:11
church is it let's go I mean they got
  • 00:13:14
all this stuff all the lights all the
  • 00:13:17
action so many people they're making
  • 00:13:19
such a big impact from that uh got
  • 00:13:21
    connected to a church in
  • 00:13:23
Oklahoma uh that was my first job and I
  • 00:13:26
know I'm talking about as like someone
  • 00:13:27
who who's worked at churches but I think
  • 00:13:29
this is applicable for anyone who's
  • 00:13:30
attended churches and so I got connected
  • 00:13:33
to this church uh in Oklahoma and uh
  • 00:13:37
really large church and it was the
  • 00:13:40
absolute worst experience of my life it
  • 00:13:43
was abusive it was like hell on Earth
  • 00:13:48
here's what I tell people never live in
  • 00:13:50
Oklahoma it's the worst place on the
  • 00:13:52
planet if you can avoid Oklahoma I think
  • 00:13:55
your life will be better uh but uh it
  • 00:14:00
was truly 83 days of hell and when I uh
  • 00:14:07
got let go after 83 days at my first job
  • 00:14:10
after college so if you last 83 days
  • 00:14:13
longer uh or at least 83 days in your
  • 00:14:16
first job after college you'll be doing
  • 00:14:18
better than me and uh I was like I'm I
  • 00:14:21
don't think I'm ever doing this church
  • 00:14:22
    thing
  • 00:14:23
again and it took me about a year to
  • 00:14:26
heal I still was connected to church but
  • 00:14:29
not really involved at all uh what I
  • 00:14:32
actually did was I went in I was an
  • 00:14:33
    admissions counselor for my college
  • 00:14:35
Johnson University and I thought well at
  • 00:14:38
least I can talk about the place I just
  • 00:14:40
went to school for four years so if you
  • 00:14:42
don't know what to do after college
  • 00:14:43
maybe you can be an admissions counselor
  • 00:14:46
and I um after that I was like okay I'm
  • 00:14:49
going to give this thing a try again
  • 00:14:51
through I think God's hand got connect
  • 00:14:52
to a small Church up in Providence Rhode
  • 00:14:55
Island so I was in Rhode Island uh with
  • 00:14:58
the church and and did not know it but
  • 00:15:00
    the church was financially wrecked
  • 00:15:03
within 6 months of me getting there the
  • 00:15:05
church shut down all the staff quit and
  • 00:15:07
I had to help find people find new
  • 00:15:09
churches so I was 0 for two I'm like
  • 00:15:13
okay this is this is not good and yet uh
  • 00:15:18
I got connected to a really beautiful
  • 00:15:20
Church community in East Providence and
  • 00:15:22
I was able to uh build the youth
  • 00:15:25
ministry there and it was a beautiful
  • 00:15:28
community and it was healing and I
  • 00:15:32
really uh found life there and found
  • 00:15:35
life in the church and it was a church
  • 00:15:36
    that was growing Church Plant
  • 00:15:38
attractional uh a lot of good things I
  • 00:15:41
got curious wanted to explore some
  • 00:15:43
things so I actually got connected to uh
  • 00:15:45
and helped start a new church in Boston
  • 00:15:47
Massachusetts and it was a missional
  • 00:15:50
house Church type Community super local
  • 00:15:52
super incarnational and I was like man
  • 00:15:55
this is going to be so much better than
  • 00:15:56
a tractional church and I got to do a
  • 00:16:00
lot of cool things there and uh it was
  • 00:16:03
cool because we we broke a lot of norms
  • 00:16:05
and that sort of thing from there I
  • 00:16:07
realized you know whether a church is 20
  • 00:16:10
people or 200 people or 2,000 or 20,000
  • 00:16:14
we can all kind of have the same sort of
  • 00:16:17
issues and so through a crazy uh series
  • 00:16:21
of events I got connected to Christ
  • 00:16:23
Church Anglican in Overland Park and I'm
  • 00:16:25
Anglican now which never planned to
  • 00:16:29
and uh I'm telling you I'm in love it's
  • 00:16:32
great I feel like I found my spot I feel
  • 00:16:35
like it's formation first I feel like
  • 00:16:37
    it's a family I feel connected I feel
  • 00:16:40
whole and I think I got connected to a
  • 00:16:42
healthy Church which I'm really grateful
  • 00:16:43
for I'm sure there are messed up angle
  • 00:16:45
churches out there but I didn't find one
  • 00:16:47
which I'm really grateful for my
  • 00:16:49
favorite Mike jerson story is that in
  • 00:16:52
between getting uh that as I was looking
  • 00:16:55
for that job I applied for another job
  • 00:16:57
which is the director Campus Ministries
  • 00:16:59
    at Friends
  • 00:17:00
    University
  • 00:17:02
    and I call
  • 00:17:05
Mike and I'm like dude I'm really
  • 00:17:07
excited for this job opportunity he's
  • 00:17:09
like what's the job opportunity I was
  • 00:17:10
like director of Campus Ministries at
  • 00:17:12
Friends University he was like oh I
  • 00:17:14
applied for that job as well and uh long
  • 00:17:18
story short we both got into the final
  • 00:17:20
round I actually bowed out because I was
  • 00:17:22
like this place will be way better with
  • 00:17:23
Mike than it would be with me and uh now
  • 00:17:26
you have Mike as your campus Pastor so
  • 00:17:29
you can learn what you uh luckily
  • 00:17:31
avoided okay so um here's what I'll say
  • 00:17:35
in telling my story with all that is one
  • 00:17:39
it would have been really easy for me to
  • 00:17:41
give up on the church and I really
  • 00:17:43
    wanted
  • 00:17:44
to and I'm so glad I didn't I'm so glad
  • 00:17:48
that I didn't and I had to do a lot of
  • 00:17:51
processing a lot of healing I had to
  • 00:17:54
work out my my stuff with it but I just
  • 00:17:57
want to say a few things that no matter
  • 00:18:00
where you are in your journey it's okay
  • 00:18:03
that it's messy and it's okay that it's
  • 00:18:06
hard and it's okay if you don't have it
  • 00:18:09
figured out the people who have been
  • 00:18:12
part of the same church their entire
  • 00:18:14
lives or same network of churches that's
  • 00:18:16
    beautiful I think that that's Jesus's
  • 00:18:19
    heart and
  • 00:18:20
design and I Think Jesus isn't
  • 00:18:25
territorial meaning the kingdom is large
  • 00:18:29
and you have to find a church that fits
  • 00:18:32
    your spirit spiritual personality your
  • 00:18:35
gifts your fit and so we should look for
  • 00:18:38
churches where we serve and can connect
  • 00:18:40
and the Holy Spirit should lead us but I
  • 00:18:43
think you exploring and finding a church
  • 00:18:47
that feels like home is a really good
  • 00:18:49
and beautiful thing so I have friends
  • 00:18:51
who grew up Catholic who are now Baptist
  • 00:18:54
and I have friends who grew up Baptist
  • 00:18:56
who are now Catholic I have friends who
  • 00:18:59
I never thought they'd be Pentecostals
  • 00:19:01
    and they're uh they're they're doing
  • 00:19:03
some stuff with the Holy Spirit that's
  • 00:19:04
pretty cool I have some friends that uh
  • 00:19:08
currently are trying to sort through
  • 00:19:11
    things but whether it's a church that's
  • 00:19:13
focused on Justice or it's Evangelical
  • 00:19:17
or it's Anglican or it's Catholic the
  • 00:19:19
Kingdom's large and different types of
  • 00:19:22
churches speak to different types of
  • 00:19:24
people and different types of churches
  • 00:19:25
    have different strengths weaknesses but
  • 00:19:28
I think I think we have to be careful
  • 00:19:29
there's going to be a scale up here that
  • 00:19:31
I just want you to think about is that I
  • 00:19:34
think we can go one of two sides one is
  • 00:19:38
disconnection again I've been hurt by
  • 00:19:40
church so I'm not going or uh just like
  • 00:19:45
an apathy that we're not connected to a
  • 00:19:49
community even though for Jesus it's a
  • 00:19:51
top priority in our spiritual formation
  • 00:19:54
or I think we can go to consumerism I
  • 00:19:56
think we can uh change churches like we
  • 00:20:00
change outfits I think that if a church
  • 00:20:03
has one flaw we leave and there's no
  • 00:20:06
perfect Church you will sometimes be
  • 00:20:09
hurt even by the best of churches
  • 00:20:11
because a church is people a church is
  • 00:20:14
community that's why the New Testament
  • 00:20:16
talks so much about unity and conflict
  • 00:20:20
resolution and health and all those
  • 00:20:21
things I think the best place to be is
  • 00:20:24
faithful presence you find a spot the
  • 00:20:27
Holy Spirit leads you and you stick with
  • 00:20:29
it and the Holy Spirit can help you find
  • 00:20:33
that sort of spot and the ideal is that
  • 00:20:35
we belong to a faithful Community for a
  • 00:20:38
for a long period of time because that's
  • 00:20:40
where the formation happens that's where
  • 00:20:42
the development happens so that's the
  • 00:20:44
ideal and it's messy in between and
  • 00:20:48
that's okay that's okay I think that uh
  • 00:20:53
    there are people
  • 00:20:55
who really believe that they have the
  • 00:20:57
corner on the mark market and would not
  • 00:21:00
encourage you to find a healthy place
  • 00:21:02
you know my youth pastor the guy who led
  • 00:21:04
me to Christ in that church of Christ
  • 00:21:06
because I'm Anglican now he uh he's like
  • 00:21:09
I'm not sure uh you know I'm not sure
  • 00:21:11
how solid your faith is because you're
  • 00:21:13
Anglican instead of Church of Christ and
  • 00:21:16
I would just say again Jesus isn't
  • 00:21:18
territorial hey if you're a Quaker
  • 00:21:21
that's awesome if you go to friend's
  • 00:21:23
University and you're not Quaker that's
  • 00:21:25
okay too right the kingdom is a big
  • 00:21:28
place and I'll give us three kind of
  • 00:21:30
guard rails as we think about connecting
  • 00:21:33
to a church as we process our her as we
  • 00:21:36
process where we're at is one I think a
  • 00:21:39
church needs to have a high
  • 00:21:41
christology I Think Jesus has to be
  • 00:21:44
front and center True North he's The
  • 00:21:46
Guiding Mark if you find a church that
  • 00:21:49
worships Wonderbread probably not a good
  • 00:21:51
church right you need a church that
  • 00:21:53
worships Jesus and really a church that
  • 00:21:56
worships father Son and Holy Spirit
  • 00:21:58
Arian healthy theology two I think a
  • 00:22:03
    healthy church has authority of
  • 00:22:05
scripture I think in our world with so
  • 00:22:07
many different truths I think it has to
  • 00:22:09
be based on scripture as The Guiding
  • 00:22:13
truth of our lives and you can find a
  • 00:22:15
lot of churches where that's not the
  • 00:22:16
case and I think that is absolutely
  • 00:22:19
essential third thing uh just as
  • 00:22:22
important is emotional health and this
  • 00:22:25
one can be really hard to find again not
  • 00:22:28
    perfect
  • 00:22:29
not everyone's going to get a ride all
  • 00:22:30
time but generally is it a place that's
  • 00:22:33
emotionally healthy that doesn't run its
  • 00:22:36
volunteers ragged that is able to give
  • 00:22:40
people space and rest that treats humans
  • 00:22:43
like humans that allows people to make
  • 00:22:46
mistakes and they're not judged that
  • 00:22:48
    validates your experience in your
  • 00:22:51
emotions I know that as you think about
  • 00:22:54
that um maybe that's that's difficult to
  • 00:22:58
find maybe as I talk about all this
  • 00:23:01
there's just this uh emotional barrier
  • 00:23:05
and I just want to say that's okay it's
  • 00:23:08
okay Jesus is with you in that and Jesus
  • 00:23:11
wants you to be connected to his body I
  • 00:23:14
love what Mike says about Chapel that uh
  • 00:23:17
this is the big SE church but this isn't
  • 00:23:19
your church right we all need the body
  • 00:23:21
of Christ we all need a place to connect
  • 00:23:24
and belong and in the midst of that I'll
  • 00:23:26
just say as well man I think some
  • 00:23:28
preference are okay you know like one of
  • 00:23:30
my preferences is I don't do smoke
  • 00:23:33
machines sorry like if your church has
  • 00:23:36
smoke machines it's not a good fit for
  • 00:23:37
me and for some people mega church smoke
  • 00:23:40
    machines that's great and that's a good
  • 00:23:43
thing but you also kind of have to know
  • 00:23:45
what what your your thing is for me too
  • 00:23:48
communion every week is kind of an
  • 00:23:51
essential because I think that uh I I
  • 00:23:55
think that that's so important for
  • 00:23:57
    connection with Christ scripture but
  • 00:23:59
there's a lot of things that can be
  • 00:24:00
nuanced but I would say your preferences
  • 00:24:02
matter but most of all I think you
  • 00:24:06
should be asking how can I contribute to
  • 00:24:08
this community how can I find my purpose
  • 00:24:11
here and we don't want to be
  • 00:24:13
consumers so hear me say this keep
  • 00:24:17
persevering with the church that's what
  • 00:24:20
I want you to hear is that in the church
  • 00:24:24
we do find life the church for a
  • 00:24:27
    follower of Jesus
  • 00:24:29
    is not
  • 00:24:30
optional and unfortunately that could be
  • 00:24:33
a contentious statement today in our
  • 00:24:36
world but I'll just say for a follower
  • 00:24:38
of Jesus the church is not optional it
  • 00:24:41
is essential and if we want to find life
  • 00:24:44
in every single part of our Lives the
  • 00:24:45
church has to be part of the equation
  • 00:24:48
not in a cultural sense not in a I'm
  • 00:24:51
just doing this to look good or to be
  • 00:24:53
moral in a sense of belonging to a
  • 00:24:56
community that one another's one another
  • 00:24:58
that loves each other that supports one
  • 00:25:00
another and where we can be known where
  • 00:25:02
we can love people where we can find
  • 00:25:05
healing and wholeness and every single
  • 00:25:07
person on the planet needs that and I
  • 00:25:09
think when a church does that well it is
  • 00:25:12
beautiful uh I've heard people say you
  • 00:25:14
know the church is the bride of Christ
  • 00:25:16
and divorce isn't an option we have to
  • 00:25:21
figure this out in the midst of the pain
  • 00:25:23
and just because it's hard doesn't mean
  • 00:25:27
it's bad and Jesus knows the formative
  • 00:25:30
Journey we go on as we journey with
  • 00:25:34
people and so you are the
  • 00:25:39
church and also we need the church to
  • 00:25:43
connect and uh there's so much in this
  • 00:25:46
conversation I can't share like when is
  • 00:25:49
it time to to find a church when is it
  • 00:25:51
time to to heal when when's it a Time to
  • 00:25:54
Leave a church there's so much there
  • 00:25:57
that I'm sure Mike Miranda or myself
  • 00:26:00
would love to talk with you about
  • 00:26:01
Professor would love to talk with you
  • 00:26:03
about but just hear me that even in the
  • 00:26:06
midst of the hardship finding life in
  • 00:26:08
the church is worth it so I'm actually
  • 00:26:10
going to throw my info up on the screen
  • 00:26:12
couple things is that my phone number's
  • 00:26:14
there if you want to text me if you want
  • 00:26:17
to connect and there's anything I could
  • 00:26:19
do to help you process I would love to
  • 00:26:21
do that also that QR code has a cool uh
  • 00:26:24
few things that I'm doing I do this
  • 00:26:26
thing called form weekly four things for
  • 00:26:27
your form every week where I send you a
  • 00:26:30
    thought a question a quote and a
  • 00:26:31
resource to help you in your journey
  • 00:26:33
with Christ and then I'm leading a
  • 00:26:35
retreat in mid November on a rule of
  • 00:26:37
Life developing an intentional plan with
  • 00:26:39
Jesus and Retreats have changed my
  • 00:26:41
formation and in my life and sometimes
  • 00:26:44
we need to get away and uh be with Jesus
  • 00:26:47
and so that's an opportunity in mid
  • 00:26:49
November I'd love to help you connect
  • 00:26:51
with but most of all I'd love to pray
  • 00:26:53
for you so can we pray I encourage you
  • 00:26:57
um to no matter where you're at with the
  • 00:26:59
church right now just have a posture of
  • 00:27:01
openness and allow Jesus to speak to you
  • 00:27:05
so Jesus we invite you uh to speak to us
  • 00:27:09
we know you're here we know your
  • 00:27:11
presence is ministering to us and
  • 00:27:14
wherever we're at whether we're super
  • 00:27:16
connected to a church and is healthy
  • 00:27:17
encourage us to be the church there and
  • 00:27:21
to find life and to be life and God we
  • 00:27:25
pray for those of us who uh have a
  • 00:27:28
    complicated relationship that you would
  • 00:27:32
help bring Clarity bring peace find the
  • 00:27:36
right community and God would we be your
  • 00:27:39
church in the world and would you help
  • 00:27:41
us in every part of our Lives honor you
  • 00:27:45
and Jesus you get all the glory in Jesus
  • 00:27:48
    name
  • 00:27:50
    amen
  • 00:27:51
amen let's give it up for Jacob thanks
  • 00:27:56
brother a lot a lot of wisdom in a short
  • 00:28:00
amount of time Jacob um to Echo what he
  • 00:28:03
said a lot of this might be a
  • 00:28:05
    springboard for more
  • 00:28:07
    conversation uh maybe there's an
  • 00:28:09
invitation there where you go yeah I'm
  • 00:28:12
I'm in one of the seasons and with love
  • 00:28:14
to consider this or talk more and so I
  • 00:28:16
just want to Echo what he said we're
  • 00:28:17
available we this is what we do this is
  • 00:28:19
what we love to do and you will not be
  • 00:28:21
met with judgment um this will be a safe
  • 00:28:24
way to to communicate that so would'
  • 00:28:26
love to talk more Jacob one of the of
  • 00:28:28
the things we're doing with our theme
  • 00:28:29
Fully live is is uh asking some three
  • 00:28:32
questions just to help us you spur on
  • 00:28:35
our creativity and how we uh live fully
  • 00:28:37
and so I'd love to do that now uh just
  • 00:28:39
take a few seconds here uh what personal
  • 00:28:42
practice or habit or discipline is
  • 00:28:45
helping you live fully right now is
  • 00:28:47
bringing you life right now yeah this is
  • 00:28:49
good uh I love a thinker and writer
  • 00:28:52
named Andy Crouch he talked about when
  • 00:28:55
he was at Dartmouth iag School that's
  • 00:28:57
super intense competitive how he would
  • 00:29:00
uh practice Sabbath he'd practice a day
  • 00:29:01
of rest every Sunday and how it helped
  • 00:29:04
him Thrive and for me uh I've been
  • 00:29:08
practicing Sabbath for about two years
  • 00:29:10
three years now specifically with that
  • 00:29:12
how do I encourage you is uh a no Tech
  • 00:29:15
day every week and for me uh Friday
  • 00:29:19
night into Saturday night uh I don't
  • 00:29:22
touch my phone for 24 hours I stop I
  • 00:29:25
rest I spend time with people I love I
  • 00:29:27
eat really good food and it's a practice
  • 00:29:30
that's changed my life and I feel so
  • 00:29:33
much more connected rooted alive healthy
  • 00:29:37
and um you know Richard Foster would
  • 00:29:39
talk about how with tech it's a good
  • 00:29:41
idea to do uh take a break for one day a
  • 00:29:44
week one week a month one month a year
  • 00:29:47
and uh I'm not at that level but one day
  • 00:29:50
a week I think is really healthy to have
  • 00:29:52
a day of rest and no Tech and no work
  • 00:29:55
    it's great it's great it's been a theme
  • 00:29:56
we've been talking about about in this
  • 00:29:58
space too so um what if you go back and
  • 00:30:01
tell your your college self in undergrad
  • 00:30:03
like one thing as you look back what
  • 00:30:05
would that be you know I was the kind of
  • 00:30:09
college student I don't know about you
  • 00:30:10
but I did a little bit of everything so
  • 00:30:12
I had a different job all four years on
  • 00:30:14
campus I jumped from thing to thing I
  • 00:30:17
kind of wanted the full experience and
  • 00:30:18
that's great if I could go back I tell
  • 00:30:21
myself buddy just just stick with one
  • 00:30:24
thing and just write it out I think that
  • 00:30:26
there's a rich experience in being able
  • 00:30:29
to have some consistency and I think uh
  • 00:30:32
in my fomo I just went from thing to
  • 00:30:35
thing and I wish I would have uh been
  • 00:30:37
confident in in sticking with what I
  • 00:30:40
love and then what's some good news you
  • 00:30:43
    have to share with
  • 00:30:44
us uh you know this one was like the
  • 00:30:47
hardest for me to think of which maybe
  • 00:30:48
says something about my personality but
  • 00:30:50
I uh my you saw a picture of my baby boy
  • 00:30:54
janer he's 9 months old today and uh man
  • 00:30:57
good news of of being a father is just
  • 00:30:59
like the best thing in my life right now
  • 00:31:01
it's so great so much joy and um you
  • 00:31:06
know it comes way faster than what you
  • 00:31:08
think I even tried to delay it in like a
  • 00:31:11
decade from now a lot of you might have
  • 00:31:13
    kids so it's a joy don't be afraid it's
  • 00:31:17
awesome well thank you brother I'm gonna
  • 00:31:19
I'm gonna invite ke uh Professor ke keer
  • 00:31:22
up to close us in a blessing so and then
  • 00:31:26
    we'll wrap up
  • 00:31:30
for the blessing can we uh ceue up the
  • 00:31:33
smoke machines kind of get that going
  • 00:31:37
and so since our uh our brother Jacob is
  • 00:31:40
is Anglican now you stay up here Jacob
  • 00:31:42
come on since our brother Jacob is
  • 00:31:45
anglian now and uh loves some communion
  • 00:31:49
um how about a simple but powerful
  • 00:31:54
Eucharistic blessing to send you out
  • 00:31:58
    just as Jesus
  • 00:32:00
    was
  • 00:32:03
    taken
  • 00:32:05
    broken
  • 00:32:07
    blessed and
  • 00:32:09
given may you my friends be taken
  • 00:32:14
    broken
  • 00:32:15
blessed and given for the good of the
  • 00:32:18
world in the name of the father son and
  • 00:32:21
    holy spirit amen
