Welcome back to Hardware Unboxed. We're
  • 00:00:07
here in Taipei for Computex 2025. And
  • 00:00:11
well, we woke up this morning and we saw
  • 00:00:13
    some pretty disappointing things
  • 00:00:16
occurring in the media relating to the
  • 00:00:18
GeForce RTX 5060, which as you all know
  • 00:00:21
is launching in the next couple of days.
  • 00:00:23
There's just been some odd preview
  • 00:00:26
coverage and that sort of thing. So, we
  • 00:00:27
wanted to get in front of the camera and
  • 00:00:29
just talk about, I guess, Nvidia's
  • 00:00:31
manipulation of the media when it comes
  • 00:00:33
to previews and review coverage. Why you
  • 00:00:36
shouldn't be using previews of the RTX
  • 00:00:38
5060 to buy this specific GPU and why we
  • 00:00:41
strongly believe you should still wait
  • 00:00:42
for reviews, which is going to be
  • 00:00:44
difficult cuz, you know, we're here in
  • 00:00:46
in Taipei. We're going to talk a little
  • 00:00:47
bit about that. And, yeah, just this is
  • 00:00:50
a longunning situation that Nvidia has
  • 00:00:52
been implementing for a while now. So,
  • 00:00:54
we're going to give a little bit of a
  • 00:00:55
history into it and yeah, just really
  • 00:00:57
talk about how it relates to the RTX

So, for more information, please check
  • 00:01:51
the links in the video description.
  • 00:01:53
Yeah. So, I think we'll go back and talk
  • 00:01:56
about some of the examples that have led
  • 00:01:58
to where we are right now. won't won't
  • 00:02:00
dig up a whole I won't go into every
  • 00:02:02
single example because we'd be probably
  • 00:02:04
talking for about an hour about all the
  • 00:02:06
uh questionable decisions that have been
  • 00:02:08
made over the years. But what stands out
  • 00:02:10
to me as sort of a if a turning point is
  • 00:02:14
the right word, but a point where this
  • 00:02:15
started to occur, this manipulation of
  • 00:02:18
reviews most not most notably would have
  • 00:02:21
been probably the RTX3080 release, which
  • 00:02:26
    really unnecessary I thought anyway
  • 00:02:27
because that's a great product, but it
  • 00:02:29
was sort of a baby step. Um, and we
  • 00:02:31
don't really want to name too many names
  • 00:02:33
here. In this example, um, Digital
  • 00:02:36
Foundry were granted early access to
  • 00:02:38
look at the RTX3080 and sort of a
  • 00:02:40
preview review style. Uh, I think it was
  • 00:02:43
a few days before the actual reviews
  • 00:02:45
were set to go live, which they did. Um,
  • 00:02:48
so in this particular example, it wasn't
  • 00:02:50
terribly egregious, but it was still an
  • 00:02:53
    attempt to manipulate the initial
  • 00:02:56
impressions of the product. So, in their
  • 00:02:58
instance, they were only allowed to
  • 00:03:00
benchmark at 4K uh comparing the RTX
  • 00:03:04
3080 with the 2080. Now, this led to a
  • 00:03:07
    best case scenario showing typically
  • 00:03:10
around an 80% performance uh uplift. I
  • 00:03:12
think they saw about 77% on average,
  • 00:03:15
which wasn't that much above what you do
  • 00:03:18
see when comparing those two GPUs at 4K.
  • 00:03:20
It's around the 70% mark across a wide
  • 00:03:23
range of games. So, not miles off, but
  • 00:03:27
at 1440p, the RTX 3080 wasn't nearly as
  • 00:03:30
impressive relative to the 2080 for
  • 00:03:32
numerous reasons, and that is still true
  • 00:03:35
to this day. You were looking at just
  • 00:03:36
shy of a 50% performance uplift on
  • 00:03:39
average. So, if the initial impression
  • 00:03:41
was you're looking, you know, let's say
  • 00:03:43
    48% uplift at 1440p, and that's probably
  • 00:03:46
a resolution that most gamers were
  • 00:03:47
focused on, that's a lot less exciting
  • 00:03:49
than 80%. But again, it's not a horrible
  • 00:03:52
    example. It wasn't terribly misleading,
  • 00:03:55
which is why I think most people were
  • 00:03:57
happy with it and it didn't raise too
  • 00:03:59
many eyebrows at the time. It it didn't
  • 00:04:02
really need to be done. Odd choice and
  • 00:04:04
it was very much using the strong
  • 00:04:06
    reputation that Digital Foundry has
  • 00:04:08
built up over the years to, you know,
  • 00:04:11
basically say exactly what Nvidia has
  • 00:04:13
wanted to say through them. So, I wasn't
  • 00:04:15
particularly happy with that coverage at
  • 00:04:17
the time. Again, don't really want to
  • 00:04:19
call Digital Foundry out on that. I
  • 00:04:21
think looking back their content was
  • 00:04:22
fine. Definitely showed a best case
  • 00:04:24
scenario, but it wasn't miles difference
  • 00:04:27
to what reality was. So, not a huge
  • 00:04:30
problem there. And again, it just didn't
  • 00:04:31
need to happen on Nvidia's side. Got
  • 00:04:33
even weirder though, probably more just
  • 00:04:36
well, I don't want to say justified, but
  • 00:04:38
it it got weirder with the RTX3090.
  • 00:04:40
That's where the whole 8K meme began.
  • 00:04:43
And Mhm. again, they lent on the
  • 00:04:45
reputation of multiple well-known, in a
  • 00:04:49
lot of instances, trusted media outlets
  • 00:04:51
to push the narrative that the RTX3090
  • 00:04:54
was a product worth buying because it
  • 00:04:56
was very future proof. It was going to
  • 00:04:58
support 8K TVs and upcoming gaming
  • 00:05:00
monitors and things like that and offer
  • 00:05:02
an experience that you just couldn't get
  • 00:05:03
    on any other
  • 00:05:05
GPU. Again, it turned out to be more of
  • 00:05:07
the 8K meme. No one really bought that,
  • 00:05:09
but they attempted to again manipulate
  • 00:05:13
the the messaging there with sort of
  • 00:05:15
early access to this 8K focused content.
  • 00:05:18
So, we'll sort of fast forward. I think
  • 00:05:20
we'll mostly skip the GeForce 40 series
  • 00:05:22
and just jump pretty much to the present
  • 00:05:24
so we don't drag this out too much. So,
  • 00:05:27
with the release of the RTX 5070, again,
  • 00:05:31
days before those reviews were set to go
  • 00:05:33
live, we just out of nowhere saw a
  • 00:05:36
series of previews pop up uh claiming,
  • 00:05:39
you know, that it was an amazing gaming
  • 00:05:42
    experience and it offered huge
  • 00:05:44
performance gains, you know, 5070 faster
  • 00:05:46
than a 4090 type stuff. It was really
  • 00:05:49
    paring those Nvidia marketing talking
  • 00:05:51
points. And that again was a couple of
  • 00:05:54
days before the real independent reviews
  • 00:05:56
were set to go live. Now unclear if this
  • 00:06:00
content was paid for or not or it was
  • 00:06:02
sort of throwing certain media outlets a
  • 00:06:04
bone. If you if you play nice with us,
  • 00:06:06
we'll shower you in views for the early
  • 00:06:09
access content. So easy content to make
  • 00:06:11
and good views. So I think we need to be
  • 00:06:14
clear here what the difference is
  • 00:06:15
between a review and a preview because
  • 00:06:17
you might be wondering, you know, what
  • 00:06:19
is the difference? If they've got early
  • 00:06:20
access, surely they can just make
  • 00:06:22
anything that they want to make in that
  • 00:06:24
    preview period. But really the
  • 00:06:26
difference is with the reviews, the day
  • 00:06:28
one reviews that we would cover, Gamers
  • 00:06:30
    Nexus, all the independent outlets,
  • 00:06:32
there's no restrictions on what we can
  • 00:06:33
talk about with the products at all. So
  • 00:06:35
we can basically say anything we want to
  • 00:06:37
say. We don't sign anything that says
  • 00:06:38
that we have to cover certain things.
  • 00:06:40
We're just giving our honest opinions uh
  • 00:06:42
on the product and we're adhering to the
  • 00:06:44
NDA so that everyone gets a fair go at
  • 00:06:46
making their content at the same time.
  • 00:06:48
So there's no rush to get content out
  • 00:06:50
and that sort of thing. With previews
  • 00:06:51
though, usually there is a document that
  • 00:06:54
you sign and agree to to get that early
  • 00:06:56
access ahead of the review date. So when
  • 00:06:58
it comes to a preview, there might be,
  • 00:07:00
you know, a number of dot points saying,
  • 00:07:01
well, you have to test at this
  • 00:07:03
resolution or you have to test these
  • 00:07:04
games or you have to test these
  • 00:07:06
configurations. And Nvidia will be very
  • 00:07:08
    specific about, you know, providing
  • 00:07:10
    certain configurations that are
  • 00:07:12
favorable to the product that is being
  • 00:07:14
tested. Which is why in the case of that
  • 00:07:16
5070 content, there was a lot of focus
  • 00:07:18
on configurations that you know wouldn't
  • 00:07:20
exceed the VRAM buffer, were very
  • 00:07:21
favorable with frame generation and that
  • 00:07:23
sort of thing, which may not have been
  • 00:07:25
the focus of the independent reviews
  • 00:07:26
that you would have seen a couple of
  • 00:07:28
days later. They almost always don't
  • 00:07:30
    include Radeon GPUs. So completely
  • 00:07:32
    ignores the competition, which that's
  • 00:07:34
one of the main criterias of paid
  • 00:07:36
content is no competing products. So we
  • 00:07:39
just want to show people who have
  • 00:07:40
invested in our products before a clear
  • 00:07:43
path to upgrade. and so on and why you
  • 00:07:45
should be incentivized to upgrade to
  • 00:07:47
this new product we're releasing. In the
  • 00:07:49
example of the RTX 5070, the friendly
  • 00:07:52
media outlets that we're aware of that
  • 00:07:54
made some coverage was Gamers Radar and
  • 00:07:57
PC Gamer. Both of those were chosen. Uh
  • 00:08:01
Gamers Radar, their title for their
  • 00:08:03
content piece was, "I've been using the
  • 00:08:05
RTX 5070 to play a bunch of games early
  • 00:08:08
and it might be the console killing GPU
  • 00:08:10
I've been waiting for." Kind of a
  • 00:08:12
nothing title there, but it would have
  • 00:08:14
been the testing that was a bit unusual.
  • 00:08:16
A lot of multiframe generation on versus
  • 00:08:19
off on previous generations showing very
  • 00:08:21
skewed results. PC Gamer, their title
  • 00:08:25
read, "Nvidia RTX 5070 hands-on preview.
  • 00:08:28
A sneak peek at my unreleased RTX
  • 00:08:31
    Blackwell card hitting tripledigit frame
  • 00:08:33
rates in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p and
  • 00:08:36
avowed at 4K." And of course, they were
  • 00:08:38
    again testing with multiframe generation
  • 00:08:40
enabled on the Blackwell GPU, so the
  • 00:08:43
GeForce 50 series GPU, the 5070, and
  • 00:08:46
then, you know, no multiframe generation
  • 00:08:48
on the previous generation that doesn't
  • 00:08:50
support it. So, big old skewed graphs
  • 00:08:53
with data that makes it seem like the
  • 00:08:55
GeForce 50 series is a far more
  • 00:08:57
significant upgrade than it really is.
  • 00:08:59
At least with those previews, you were
  • 00:09:01
able to see independent review coverage
  • 00:09:03
within a couple of days. like these
  • 00:09:04
previews were released ahead of time,
  • 00:09:07
but within a few days and still ahead of
  • 00:09:09
the launch of the 5070, the actual
  • 00:09:11
retail launch, you able to get the full
  • 00:09:13
    independent picture, which covered a
  • 00:09:15
whole bunch of scenarios and wasn't just
  • 00:09:17
the Nvidia games that they thought were
  • 00:09:19
the most favorable scenario. So, as you
  • 00:09:21
can sort of see, we've gone from the
  • 00:09:23
3080 launch back in the day where, you
  • 00:09:25
know, a couple of examples were used,
  • 00:09:27
    but were generally somewhat reflective
  • 00:09:30
of the products to then with this
  • 00:09:33
current generation, we got the 5070, bit
  • 00:09:35
more of that sort of preview, misleading
  • 00:09:37
numbers, frame generation to now what we
  • 00:09:40
think is clearly the worst example we
  • 00:09:42
have seen of this media manipulation,
  • 00:09:44
the RTX 5060 in the previews that we
  • 00:09:47
woke up to this morning. And again, like
  • 00:09:49
the preview coverage was exactly the
  • 00:09:52
same really as the 5070 and the
  • 00:09:53
structure, the the examples that Nvidia
  • 00:09:56
wanted people to use. So 1080p gaming
  • 00:09:58
because the 5060 is supposed to be a
  • 00:10:00
    1080p card. Lots of multi-frame
  • 00:10:02
    generation examples and specifically,
  • 00:10:04
you know, 4x frame gen on versus no
  • 00:10:07
frame gen with 3060s and 2060s, for
  • 00:10:10
    example. We've seen some pretty
  • 00:10:11
    egregious charts that show highly
  • 00:10:13
    misleading inflated numbers there. And
  • 00:10:16
so there's all of that. There's all of
  • 00:10:17
    that angle. You're getting a preview a
  • 00:10:19
couple of days ahead of launch that has
  • 00:10:22
    misleading numbers. But this is
  • 00:10:24
compounded by the fact that there's no
  • 00:10:26
review program for the 5060. There's no
  • 00:10:29
independent coverage of this product. At
  • 00:10:31
least it's going to be enabled before
  • 00:10:33
launch because we still as we sit here
  • 00:10:36
today do not have driver access for the
  • 00:10:38
5060. So with 5070 you got reviews. You
  • 00:10:42
would have gotten reviews just before
  • 00:10:43
launch. With the 5060 we do not have
  • 00:10:45
driver access. And the only way to have
  • 00:10:47
gotten driver access for the 5060 is to
  • 00:10:49
opt in to this review program. Mhm.
  • 00:10:52
Yeah, that's right. So, in summary, the
  • 00:10:55
way this story is developed is many
  • 00:10:57
weeks ago now, uh, prior to the RTX 5060
  • 00:11:01
Ti reviews, we had a private meeting
  • 00:11:03
with Nvidia where essentially they were
  • 00:11:07
tell they didn't tell us this, but
  • 00:11:08
essentially they revealed that they were
  • 00:11:10
uh bearing the 8 GB versions. So the
  • 00:11:12
5060 Ti 8 GB and the 5060, no real
  • 00:11:16
    review program for
  • 00:11:17
those. Don't worry about those. So we're
  • 00:11:20
burying them without burying them. So
  • 00:11:22
obviously we managed to get a 5060 Ti 8
  • 00:11:24
GB. We've now provided content on that.
  • 00:11:27
The 5060 they didn't really mention.
  • 00:11:29
They were just said when that becomes
  • 00:11:31
available in May, you guys can get your
  • 00:11:33
hands on one and test it and you're free
  • 00:11:35
to make your reviews. And when we
  • 00:11:37
pressed them a bit more on that, it
  • 00:11:39
seemed like there wasn't going well,
  • 00:11:41
    there definitely wasn't a review
  • 00:11:42
program. It was unclear when we'd be
  • 00:11:43
able to get one, but they'll just appear
  • 00:11:45
on shelves and when they do, we can
  • 00:11:48
review one. So, not great. Then it that
  • 00:11:51
story evolved into we're now releasing
  • 00:11:53
it during the Computex trade show. So,
  • 00:11:56
while all the tech media is out trying
  • 00:11:58
to cover the biggest tech trade show of
  • 00:12:00
the year, this card will appear on
  • 00:12:02
shelves and you'll be able to buy it and
  • 00:12:05
review it then. Except we're in
  • 00:12:06
    Compiteex. So in Taiwan attending
  • 00:12:08
Compiteex, so can't do that. And
  • 00:12:11
although we were able to get our hands
  • 00:12:13
on cards weeks ago, Nvidia were
  • 00:12:16
withholding the driver. So that means we
  • 00:12:18
couldn't get access to the required
  • 00:12:20
driver ahead of time to produce our
  • 00:12:22
review before we came here to Taiwan. So
  • 00:12:24
it could go out on the 20th. So as a
  • 00:12:26
result, yeah, we're not going to have a
  • 00:12:28
review on the 20th. Uh and probably
  • 00:12:30
won't have one shortly after, though. We
  • 00:12:32
we're working on a few things there. So
  • 00:12:34
anyway, that's the situation. But as Tim
  • 00:12:36
said, making it even worse, now we have
  • 00:12:38
the previews, but the previews won't be
  • 00:12:40
followed by reviews. Uh except for the
  • 00:12:43
outlets that got the preview driver. So
  • 00:12:45
the more friendly media outlets that
  • 00:12:49
were uh basically agreed to doing these
  • 00:12:51
    highly questionable previews are now
  • 00:12:53
able to provide reviews. So, probably
  • 00:12:55
not going to be the most critical RTX
  • 00:12:58
5060 reviews you're going to come
  • 00:13:00
across, but could be wrong on that one.
  • 00:13:01
But I'm sure some of them uh will be
  • 00:13:04
much more friendly than what you'd see
  • 00:13:06
from the likes of Gamers Nexus or us as
  • 00:13:08
an example. Yeah, there's really been no
  • 00:13:10
example in the history so far up until
  • 00:13:12
this point where Nvidia's made such a
  • 00:13:14
concerted effort to bury what we think
  • 00:13:16
is a very mainstream product. Like
  • 00:13:18
    there's certainly been products, more
  • 00:13:20
niche examples like 3050 6 GB come to
  • 00:13:23
mind more recently. 3080 12 GB as well
  • 00:13:27
where they're just released onto the
  • 00:13:28
market. There's not been much review
  • 00:13:30
    access or anything. They're just
  • 00:13:31
released. You have to test it at some
  • 00:13:33
point later. The 5060 though that is the
  • 00:13:36
    60 series card. It's not a ver we're not
  • 00:13:38
talking about a version of the 5060
  • 00:13:40
that's like a specific you know maybe
  • 00:13:43
worse version downclocked or down you
  • 00:13:46
know down configured version of the
  • 00:13:48
card. This is the 5060 that lots of
  • 00:13:50
people will be buying. And so to go
  • 00:13:52
through with a preview program which
  • 00:13:55
again it kind of establishes content on
  • 00:13:58
the internet that if you search for the
  • 00:13:59
5060 the first things that will be
  • 00:14:01
coming up around the time you're buying
  • 00:14:02
the cards are going to be the preview
  • 00:14:05
content and then the first trickling out
  • 00:14:07
of those reviews as you were saying from
  • 00:14:08
the the outlets that did previews and
  • 00:14:10
then later down the line content from us
  • 00:14:12
Gamers Nexus and the usual people. So
  • 00:14:15
    some important details for these
  • 00:14:16
previews that you guys are seeing. they
  • 00:14:18
had to agree to quite strict guidelines
  • 00:14:21
in order to receive the driver and they
  • 00:14:24
had to create this preview content. So,
  • 00:14:26
it wasn't like, oh yeah, send us the
  • 00:14:27
driver, we might do something with it,
  • 00:14:29
and then you're able to make the review.
  • 00:14:31
You really had to agree to these terms
  • 00:14:32
and conditions with Nvidia. So, that's
  • 00:14:35
what's happened here. And we have
  • 00:14:37
there's a half a dozen or so media
  • 00:14:40
outlets that have agreed to this that
  • 00:14:41
we've seen previews from so far. So,
  • 00:14:43
    GameStar, Games Radar, Tom's Guide,
  • 00:14:46
JVTech, and ASI 2, which I believe is a
  • 00:14:50
    Japanese
  • 00:14:51
    publication. So, the guidelines state,
  • 00:14:54
as far as we can tell, that it can only
  • 00:14:57
be compared, so this is the RTX 5060 can
  • 00:15:00
only be compared with the RTX 3060 and
  • 00:15:03
the 2060 Super. Now, I did see one
  • 00:15:05
comparison out of one of these that did
  • 00:15:07
look at the RTX 4060, so I'm not 100%
  • 00:15:10
sure whether they broke the guidelines
  • 00:15:12
or or what, but in any case, they
  • 00:15:15
weren't allowed to compare with Radeon
  • 00:15:17
GPUs or anything like that. And they
  • 00:15:19
really did go out of their way to
  • 00:15:21
handpick the cards that would probably
  • 00:15:23
make the 5060, well, certainly the the
  • 00:15:26
testing makes the 5060 look better than
  • 00:15:28
it was, but they're trying to target
  • 00:15:29
people obviously with these older cards
  • 00:15:32
and entice them into upgrading. That's
  • 00:15:34
being generous. I think the clear reason
  • 00:15:35
is the 3060 and 2060 Super do not
  • 00:15:38
support frame generation of any kind.
  • 00:15:40
So, they're clearly trying to show well
  • 00:15:43
4x frame gen, 4x multi frame gen that
  • 00:15:46
the 5060 supports compared to no frame
  • 00:15:48
generation. And if you include the 4060,
  • 00:15:50
you have at least single frame
  • 00:15:52
    generation. So, by specifically
  • 00:15:54
    including 3060 versus 5060, you're
  • 00:15:57
    getting the largest difference between
  • 00:15:59
    generations enabled by multiframe
  • 00:16:02
generation FPS output, which is what the
  • 00:16:04
graphs from these media outlets show.
  • 00:16:06
They're showing you three times more
  • 00:16:08
performance out of a 5060 or or more
  • 00:16:10
than that, which is crazy. So, but
  • 00:16:12
again, that's as Tim pointed out, frame
  • 00:16:14
generation, which I was about to get to.
  • 00:16:17
So, the the well, I'll go to the games
  • 00:16:19
tested first. So, the games tested are
  • 00:16:21
Avowed, Doom: The Dark Ages, Marvel
  • 00:16:23
    Rivals, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hogwarts
  • 00:16:26
    Legacy. I don't think there's anything
  • 00:16:27
too crazy. Of course, Cyber Punk's in
  • 00:16:28
there, but the games tested fine,
  • 00:16:31
whatever. I mean, they're all perfectly
  • 00:16:33
fine games to include, especially when
  • 00:16:34
you're only comparing GeForce GPUs with
  • 00:16:36
GeForce GPUs. Don't really have too much
  • 00:16:38
of a problem with the games list. I
  • 00:16:40
mean, probably not wrapped that there's
  • 00:16:42
a games list to begin with and you can't
  • 00:16:44
just test it however you'd like to, but
  • 00:16:47
it's the settings that are the big
  • 00:16:49
problem here. So, 8 GB GPU and therefore
  • 00:16:53
the testing has been limited to 1080p.
  • 00:16:55
Ultra settings though, which is an
  • 00:16:57
    interesting choice, but with DLSS
  • 00:16:59
quality upscaling. So, you're at 1080p
  • 00:17:02
with quality upscaling. And then if
  • 00:17:04
    there's ray tracing, ray reconstruction,
  • 00:17:06
or path tracing, that's to be turned on
  • 00:17:08
when available. Uh, and then of course
  • 00:17:10
multiframe generation. So you could end
  • 00:17:13
up with a scenario where the 5060 is
  • 00:17:16
only capable of about 20 frames per
  • 00:17:18
second, maybe 30 frames per second, but
  • 00:17:20
    because using multi-frame generation,
  • 00:17:22
the performance looks very good and the
  • 00:17:24
other GPUs will be pretty well unusable.
  • 00:17:26
So again, as Tim said, it's I said it
  • 00:17:29
incentivizes you to upgrade, but it it
  • 00:17:32
just shows extremely skewed data that is
  • 00:17:34
in no way realistic or representative of
  • 00:17:37
real world performance. It's really just
  • 00:17:38
to break benchmark graphs. So, that's
  • 00:17:41
the goal there. And really, they're
  • 00:17:43
trying to work out how to get their own
  • 00:17:45
    marketing slides into mainstream media.
  • 00:17:47
So, there's been a big push. Uh, we've
  • 00:17:50
been targeted with it in the past to
  • 00:17:52
test with DLSS stuff like frame
  • 00:17:54
generation enabled and it's an attempt
  • 00:17:56
    to legitimize the misleading marketing.
  • 00:17:58
They they again they're going and using
  • 00:18:01
the reputation that these sites have in
  • 00:18:02
    terms of producing independent testing
  • 00:18:04
and saying well we want you to
  • 00:18:07
essentially copy the marketing and put
  • 00:18:09
it into a different format that makes it
  • 00:18:11
look like you've come to that as an
  • 00:18:13
    independent conclusion which isn't
  • 00:18:15
necessarily the case because again there
  • 00:18:16
are guidelines that would be listing
  • 00:18:17
    these testing configurations. In summary
  • 00:18:20
there or our opinion on this is the
  • 00:18:22
previews are very bad should not be done
  • 00:18:24
    under any circumstances. There's really
  • 00:18:26
no justification for any of these media
  • 00:18:29
outlets doing these previews. You should
  • 00:18:32
    never create content following any
  • 00:18:35
    company's guidelines, especially when
  • 00:18:36
there's strict guidelines like that. So,
  • 00:18:39
    it's just it's damaging. Shouldn't be
  • 00:18:41
done. Very poor practice. And there's
  • 00:18:43
    really no defending it.
  • 00:18:45
Uh yeah, I think that's fair to say you
  • 00:18:47
agree with that. Yeah. You just it's
  • 00:18:49
bad. You're becoming the marketing arm
  • 00:18:51
of the of the company. It's even if it's
  • 00:18:53
not a paid for piece, it's effectively
  • 00:18:56
    spawn, like sponsored content. Well,
  • 00:18:58
they're getting paid in one way or
  • 00:18:59
another. So, why would you take such a
  • 00:19:02
deal? Well, you get views. You get easy
  • 00:19:05
views. Views is money. So, if you're a
  • 00:19:08
struggling site or, you know, need to
  • 00:19:10
pay the bills, uh, taking that kind of
  • 00:19:12
deal might seem like a good idea. It
  • 00:19:14
    definitely isn't. Should definitely not
  • 00:19:15
do it. But that's how it boils down to
  • 00:19:18
money is views. That's the currency
  • 00:19:19
there. also not paying off Nvidia
  • 00:19:23
probably something that a lot of these
  • 00:19:25
    you
  • 00:19:26
know media outlets don't want to do
  • 00:19:28
because it risks you know views so they
  • 00:19:31
get they don't get review samples they
  • 00:19:33
can't cover the products they don't get
  • 00:19:35
included in early access so for example
  • 00:19:36
Nvidia never approached us about uh
  • 00:19:40
doing an early preview on the RTX 5060
  • 00:19:42
because they will know our answer on
  • 00:19:44
that one so they didn't even bother
  • 00:19:45
approaching us but there are other media
  • 00:19:47
outlets that yeah are friendlier and
  • 00:19:49
will do that sort of stuff, but they
  • 00:19:50
should definitely not do it. Well, yeah,
  • 00:19:53
it's it's also, you know, sites of our
  • 00:19:55
size, Hardware Unbox, Gamers Nexus, you
  • 00:19:57
    know, Lionus, there's many different
  • 00:19:59
ways that we can get review GPUs and
  • 00:20:02
cards, and we have many contacts in the
  • 00:20:04
    industry, and we're well established.
  • 00:20:05
So, it's much harder to prevent us from
  • 00:20:08
doing a review. Whereas one of the
  • 00:20:10
things we've been really concerned about
  • 00:20:11
with this in the past has been the
  • 00:20:12
impact it has on smaller channels where
  • 00:20:15
they're more reliant on Nvidia directly
  • 00:20:18
providing the GPUs and hardware that
  • 00:20:20
they test. And it's not just to be
  • 00:20:22
included in the day one reviews. It's
  • 00:20:24
actually to get the product. So we can
  • 00:20:25
afford to buy RTX5090s if we need to or
  • 00:20:28
whatever. Um you know again Gamers
  • 00:20:30
Nexus, same sort of position. But if
  • 00:20:32
you're just starting out, you don't have
  • 00:20:34
those kind of budgets. You can't just go
  • 00:20:35
buy an RTX 5090 and then an RTX 5080 and
  • 00:20:38
    then a 5072i. You're talking about tens
  • 00:20:40
of thousands of dollars in most
  • 00:20:42
currencies just to review a product
  • 00:20:44
line. But we can do that, which is sort
  • 00:20:47
of the Nvidia knows this and they use
  • 00:20:49
this information to push out previews to
  • 00:20:52
    these specific outlets and things
  • 00:20:54
knowing that they might have a better
  • 00:20:56
chance of running the marketing angles
  • 00:20:58
on those channels as opposed to a larger
  • 00:21:01
channel where we've got more options.
  • 00:21:02
And that's just really toxic. So I I
  • 00:21:04
just it's very disappointing to see.
  • 00:21:06
Like I don't like smaller channels being
  • 00:21:09
put into that position. Like Well, we
  • 00:21:12
were a smaller channel put in that
  • 00:21:14
    position. Yeah. It's a it's a poor
  • 00:21:16
position to be put into where you're
  • 00:21:17
sort of tossing up, do I do this
  • 00:21:18
potentially dodgy content, or do I lose
  • 00:21:20
out on my revenue stream, my livelihood
  • 00:21:23
because I don't have the cards that I
  • 00:21:24
need to do my job. It's it's not good.
  • 00:21:27
Yeah. Yeah. Well, early on in the
  • 00:21:29
creation of our channel, we decided we
  • 00:21:30
weren't going to work directly in terms
  • 00:21:32
of sponsorships. So, receive money from
  • 00:21:34
AMD, Intel, or Nvidia. The core of our
  • 00:21:38
content was going to be focused around
  • 00:21:39
those three companies. So, we just
  • 00:21:41
thought, don't deal with them at all
  • 00:21:43
directly. So, they have nothing over us
  • 00:21:45
and they can't manipulate us in any way.
  • 00:21:46
That was a decision decision we made
  • 00:21:48
very early on. And of course, we've
  • 00:21:50
stuck to that. Uh, and the channel was
  • 00:21:53
much smaller back in it was 2019.
  • 00:21:58
So, the initial RTX release, you know,
  • 00:22:01
we covered DLSS, Tim found it wasn't
  • 00:22:03
very good. Um, said so. The initial ray
  • 00:22:07
tracing promise, not very good. Didn't
  • 00:22:09
live up to it. We said so. We weren't
  • 00:22:11
    just repeating Nvidia's marketing
  • 00:22:14
saying, you know, you want your games to
  • 00:22:15
be ray traced, you want this, you want
  • 00:22:16
that. You know, these cards are amazing.
  • 00:22:18
We were like, well, the value is not
  • 00:22:19
really here at this point in time.
  • 00:22:21
Nvidia made it clear to us they were
  • 00:22:23
very unhappy with that opinion and that
  • 00:22:25
content and they wanted to change our
  • 00:22:27
opinion on that. Something we haven't
  • 00:22:28
talked about on the main channel for
  • 00:22:29
    various reasons. October 2019 I had a
  • 00:22:33
private meeting with a few Nvidia
  • 00:22:34
    representatives in Australia. They flew
  • 00:22:36
out from the US and again you know they
  • 00:22:39
made it known they weren't happy with
  • 00:22:40
our content what we were doing. We
  • 00:22:42
    weren't including enough DLSS
  • 00:22:43
    benchmarks. we weren't including enough
  • 00:22:44
rage tracing benchmarks, which you know
  • 00:22:47
I disagreed with because I thought we
  • 00:22:49
were showing the technologies uh really
  • 00:22:52
as they were for for gamers. Anyway,
  • 00:22:55
long story short, over an hour of trying
  • 00:22:57
to beat me down on these points and
  • 00:22:59
    being unsuccessful, they essentially
  • 00:23:00
turned around and said, you know, how
  • 00:23:02
much can we pay you? So, they wanted us
  • 00:23:04
to make a DLSS content piece and include
  • 00:23:06
DLSS and reviews. They essentially said,
  • 00:23:08
you know, we we can sponsor you. You
  • 00:23:09
know, we we can help you guys out. uh
  • 00:23:12
yeah, we can throw money your way and do
  • 00:23:14
that. And I just flat out refused and
  • 00:23:15
said, "No, we don't take money from
  • 00:23:17
Nvidia, AMD, Intel." Uh they weren't
  • 00:23:19
happy with that. They seemed a bit
  • 00:23:21
shocked that we were not, you know, we
  • 00:23:24
turned down money that probably weren't
  • 00:23:26
expecting that. And that was the end of
  • 00:23:28
the conversation. And I think from that
  • 00:23:30
point, they didn't really see a way
  • 00:23:31
forward with us. So it was about a year
  • 00:23:34
later that we were reviewing the GeForce
  • 00:23:37
30 series. RTX 3060 Ti reviews were
  • 00:23:40
coming up and we'd heard nothing. No
  • 00:23:42
partners were really talking with us.
  • 00:23:45
Um, anyone any partners that were
  • 00:23:47
talking with us said you need to talk to
  • 00:23:48
Nvidia. Shortly after we got the email,
  • 00:23:51
which a lot of you will be familiar
  • 00:23:53
    with, the change your editorial
  • 00:23:54
direction email that uh created a huge
  • 00:23:58
controversy and quite baffling that that
  • 00:24:01
    situation ever occurred. But basically,
  • 00:24:04
they couldn't pay us to do uh what they
  • 00:24:06
wanted us to do. So they attempted to
  • 00:24:08
remove us from the I guess the GeForce
  • 00:24:10
review program. So we're familiar with
  • 00:24:12
these tactics and and we're aware this
  • 00:24:14
has been going on for a long time. The
  • 00:24:16
reason why I didn't go film a video
  • 00:24:19
straight after our private meeting was
  • 00:24:20
because that you know it was a private
  • 00:24:21
meeting. The people I had the meeting
  • 00:24:23
with um are no longer at Nvidia. Most of
  • 00:24:26
them um the person that offered me the
  • 00:24:28
money is no longer with Nvidia. They've
  • 00:24:30
moved on. But it was a private meeting.
  • 00:24:33
there was no evidence that this really
  • 00:24:34
took place and therefore it wasn't
  • 00:24:36
really worth making a content piece. I
  • 00:24:38
think we discussed it on our private
  • 00:24:39
Patreon live stream and stuff like that.
  • 00:24:41
We're a bit more transparent there. Then
  • 00:24:43
we've seen you know how the tactics
  • 00:24:45
change and and they are definitely doing
  • 00:24:48
these sort of tactics actively right now
  • 00:24:50
to other media. They're trying to
  • 00:24:52
    strongarm them into these multiframe
  • 00:24:54
generation graphs and stuff like that.
  • 00:24:55
We're aware that's going on. Uh they
  • 00:24:58
haven't done that with us. um they
  • 00:24:59
generally just provide us with the
  • 00:25:00
samples at this point in time and leave
  • 00:25:02
us alone. So, which we appreciate.
  • 00:25:04
That's great. But what we don't
  • 00:25:06
    appreciate is managing to source
  • 00:25:08
products like an RTX 5060 weeks in
  • 00:25:11
advance. And we have plenty of time to
  • 00:25:13
provide you guys with an independent
  • 00:25:15
review, showing you how the car
  • 00:25:16
    performs, it strengths and weaknesses,
  • 00:25:18
and them actively barring us from doing
  • 00:25:20
so. And then, to add insult to injury,
  • 00:25:22
    they're doing these really dodgy
  • 00:25:24
previews. And then the people who do the
  • 00:25:26
really dodgy previews are then rewarded
  • 00:25:28
with the only people that are allowed to
  • 00:25:29
provide a review. So that's very bad
  • 00:25:32
situation. Yeah, that's right. And so
  • 00:25:35
ultimately I think our conclusion is
  • 00:25:37
very very simple on this one. Don't buy
  • 00:25:39
the RTX 5060 at this point. Don't buy it
  • 00:25:43
    until there are proper independent
  • 00:25:45
reviews produced from this card. And
  • 00:25:48
this is going to be a much more
  • 00:25:49
    difficult situation than previous times.
  • 00:25:51
There's been previews and this sort of
  • 00:25:53
manipulation because of all the things
  • 00:25:54
we've talked about previously. The lack
  • 00:25:55
of everyone being here in Taipei
  • 00:25:57
basically cover trying to cover other
  • 00:25:59
things being unable to test the product.
  • 00:26:02
And yeah, we just want a video like this
  • 00:26:04
to be available so that people can
  • 00:26:05
understand exactly what's going on with
  • 00:26:07
the RTX 5060 and sort of not just leave
  • 00:26:11
all that content there, like not just
  • 00:26:13
leave all the previews, have that be the
  • 00:26:14
only thing that's related to the 5060
  • 00:26:16
    out
  • 00:26:17
there. Just we just want a bit more
  • 00:26:19
transparency on that situation and to be
  • 00:26:21
very very clear that there's absolutely
  • 00:26:23
no way that you should be buying this
  • 00:26:24
product based on preview coverage and
  • 00:26:26
the cover and the marketing materials
  • 00:26:28
you would have seen so far from Nvidia
  • 00:26:30
specifically. and hope like again I'm
  • 00:26:32
going to say hopefully Nvidia by
  • 00:26:34
exposing this won't do it again but
  • 00:26:37
earlier in the video we showed a pretty
  • 00:26:39
clear timeline where Nvidia over time
  • 00:26:41
has been getting more aggressive with
  • 00:26:44
preview type coverage and trying to
  • 00:26:47
    manipulate reviewers and the independent
  • 00:26:49
media into doing what Nvidia wants. So,
  • 00:26:52
I think the most concerning part as well
  • 00:26:54
is every example we can point to, it's
  • 00:26:57
gotten worse. Mhm. And and a lot of
  • 00:26:59
these things have been talked about at
  • 00:27:01
the time. Like there were responses to
  • 00:27:03
that 8K videos that videos that were
  • 00:27:05
made pointing out how ludicrous they
  • 00:27:06
were. There there were responses to
  • 00:27:08
things like, you know, the 4080 12 GB
  • 00:27:11
    being highly misleading. There were
  • 00:27:12
responses to, you know, well, there were
  • 00:27:15
just independent reviews for the 5070
  • 00:27:17
like a couple of weeks later. And then
  • 00:27:18
obviously lots of reviewers have been
  • 00:27:20
    talking about the multi-frame generation
  • 00:27:22
stuff and and all those sorts of things
  • 00:27:24
in a accurate way. So the fact that all
  • 00:27:27
that's happened, we keep bringing up
  • 00:27:28
like, oh, Nvidia is trying to bury 8 GB
  • 00:27:30
GPUs even though they're still making
  • 00:27:32
them. And then the next tactic after
  • 00:27:34
that is 5060 bury that, then do you know
  • 00:27:37
these previews? What are we going to be
  • 00:27:40
facing next generation? Like if Nvidia
  • 00:27:43
is not confident that reviews are going
  • 00:27:45
to be positive, which and I think that's
  • 00:27:46
a really key part of these discussions
  • 00:27:48
is Nvidia doesn't seem very confident in
  • 00:27:50
these products. They don't seem to
  • 00:27:52
believe that they're good. So they're
  • 00:27:53
needing to do more manipulation. If they
  • 00:27:55
if they release another series that is
  • 00:27:58
bad, then what are we going to see? Are
  • 00:28:00
we going to see even more bearing of
  • 00:28:03
GPUs? Is that going to be for the
  • 00:28:04
higherend products as well? Are they
  • 00:28:06
going to focus more on delivering
  • 00:28:08
content to media platforms that are
  • 00:28:10
favorable to Nvidia and leaving out
  • 00:28:11
people who are more independent in their
  • 00:28:14
thoughts? Um, it's not a good situation
  • 00:28:16
to be in. But again, like like we sort
  • 00:28:17
of said, we can highlight this issue and
  • 00:28:19
then it's probably just going to get
  • 00:28:21
worse next time. So, I think the issue
  • 00:28:22
    is becoming increasingly timesensitive.
  • 00:28:24
I really think that gamers need to let
  • 00:28:28
Nvidia know they're not happy about this
  • 00:28:30
uh more so than they have been because
  • 00:28:32
they're really refining this process and
  • 00:28:35
it's possibly not too far off future
  • 00:28:38
where Gamers Nexus Harbor and Boxed are
  • 00:28:40
reviews either we don't have them or
  • 00:28:43
they're heavily buried because it's not
  • 00:28:45
difficult for Nvidia to promote these
  • 00:28:47
previews. It's it's really not difficult
  • 00:28:49
for them to to boost these uh these
  • 00:28:52
previews up when you you search for
  • 00:28:54
content to make them bury everything
  • 00:28:56
else. And if they see good results from
  • 00:28:58
    doing that, then they are
  • 00:29:00
    disincentivized over time from providing
  • 00:29:02
the review, you know, drivers or
  • 00:29:04
hardware to people that again are not
  • 00:29:07
following the Nvidia script. if they're
  • 00:29:09
seeing that people are believing reviews
  • 00:29:12
from those sort of sources and thinking,
  • 00:29:14
"Oh, I don't need to watch a review from
  • 00:29:16
a from someone else because I've already
  • 00:29:18
got all the information from a preview."
  • 00:29:20
Then they're going to be like, "Well,
  • 00:29:21
we've already given the, you know, we've
  • 00:29:22
already done the reviews. They're done.
  • 00:29:24
Like, all good. So, no need to go any
  • 00:29:27
further than that." And again, like,
  • 00:29:28
we're not sitting here. I don't want to
  • 00:29:30
sit here and whine and complain like,
  • 00:29:31
"Oh, we're not going to get reviews, not
  • 00:29:33
be able to do review s not going to get
  • 00:29:35
review samples or whatever." But I think
  • 00:29:38
it it goes to the you know an
  • 00:29:39
    independent media is necessary to
  • 00:29:42
    critically evaluate products. It's
  • 00:29:43
essential in markets like this so that
  • 00:29:46
at the end of the day consumers are
  • 00:29:47
getting the best advice. They're not
  • 00:29:49
wasting money on products that are
  • 00:29:51
unnecessary and yeah the media is just
  • 00:29:53
essential for that process and any
  • 00:29:55
attempts to I don't know manipulate that
  • 00:29:58
go around things is yeah just not what
  • 00:30:00
we want to see. We've also started using
  • 00:30:02
Trix coolers, and I've got to say the
  • 00:30:04
Panorama SE 360 Black is one of the best
  • 00:30:07
looking AIO's I've ever seen. The
  • 00:30:09
quality of the rotatable display is
  • 00:30:11
incredible, and as complex as the design
  • 00:30:13
appears, it's remarkably quick and easy
  • 00:30:16
to install. So, for more information,
  • 00:30:18
please check the links in the video
  • 00:30:19
description. Finally, a big thank you to
  • 00:30:22
GSkill and Trikes for helping to make
  • 00:30:23
our Computex trip possible this year.
  • 00:30:26
GSkill offers an amazing range of DDR5
  • 00:30:28
memory with AMD Expo support allowing
  • 00:30:30
you to get the most out of your Ryzen
  • 00:30:32
processor. And we've been using their
  • 00:30:33
Trident Z5 Neo memory in our test
  • 00:30:36
systems for years now as we rely on it
  • 00:30:38
to get the best results. We're not
  • 00:30:40
concerned for ourselves at all in this.
  • 00:30:42
Like we'll be fine. We'll continue
  • 00:30:45
making content. It's really about you
  • 00:30:47
    guys getting accurate information. Not
  • 00:30:48
even necessarily just you guys. It's
  • 00:30:50
people who will be, you know, future
  • 00:30:52
gamers. So don't think about right here
  • 00:30:55
and now 5 years from now people who are
  • 00:30:57
coming into PC gaming that don't know
  • 00:30:59
about all the you know Gamers Nexus
  • 00:31:01
Harbor Unboxed and whoever else. So

    they're looking for sources of
  • 00:31:05
information and if they're finding these
  • 00:31:08
propped up sources by Nvidia that are
  • 00:31:10
    essentially propaganda that's not good.
  • 00:31:12
So and that I can see a future where
  • 00:31:14
that's very easily uh going to happen.
  • 00:31:17
So we'll probably just stop there
  • 00:31:19
because we could continue talking about
  • 00:31:20
this subject for quite a while. I'm sure
  • 00:31:22
we'll have more to say about it in other
  • 00:31:23
Computex coverage that'll be coming up
  • 00:31:25
later in the week. So, we'll leave it
  • 00:31:28
there. We really just wanted to address
  • 00:31:29
this soon after those previews went out.
  • 00:31:32
    Again, probably not something that's
  • 00:31:34
going to suck in a lot of you guys, but
  • 00:31:36
it's still a tactic that we want to see
  • 00:31:38
stopped from Nvidia. And again, it's
  • 00:31:40
it's looking like they're wanting to
  • 00:31:41
head in the other direction with it. So,
  • 00:31:43
anyway, that's really all we've got to
  • 00:31:44
say right now, or that we should say
  • 00:31:46
right now, cuz we don't want to drag
  • 00:31:47
this video out too much more than what
  • 00:31:50
we have. So yeah, we'll see what happens
  • 00:31:53
with these RTX 5060 reviews and we'll
  • 00:31:55
see how quickly we can get ours out. Um,
  • 00:31:57
as I said, we've got a few things that
  • 00:31:59
we're trying to make happen, but quite
  • 00:32:01
difficult being over here in Taiwan. But
  • 00:32:04
anyway, thanks for watching. I'm your
  • 00:32:05
host Steve. I'm your host Tim. See you
  • 00:32:07
    again next time.
