Aula 1 sobre EQUILÍBRIO QUÍMICO, Química Geral II - UERJ. POSTADA DIA 13/05/2025.
- 00:00:00I would like to extend a very warm
- 00:00:02welcome to you all to our pre-eparture
- 00:00:04session on LSC summer school
- 00:00:072025. My name is Chloe Kuang and I'm the
- 00:00:10student recruitment officer for summer
- 00:00:12school and it's my pleasure to meet all
- 00:00:13of you here in advance of your
- 00:00:15arrival. Today we will have Elellanena
- 00:00:18and CC who are the program coordinator
- 00:00:21and event officer for summer school.
- 00:00:24Elellanena will share with you some key
- 00:00:26dates and important information
- 00:00:28regarding your arrival as well as what
- 00:00:30you can expect in the academic program.
- 00:00:33CeCe will introduce the social and spark
- 00:00:35professional skill program
- 00:00:37afterwards. I'm also happy that we have
- 00:00:40with us Alex, our fantastic student
- 00:00:42ambassador, and we're excited to hear
- 00:00:45her perspective of the program and her
- 00:00:46student experience.
- 00:00:49More team members are also here for you
- 00:00:51and we'll monitor the chat. If you hover
- 00:00:54over the screen now, you will see the
- 00:00:56Q&A session. Please feel free to write
- 00:00:59your questions in the Q&A throughout the
- 00:01:01presentation and our team will do their
- 00:01:03best to answer them. We will also
- 00:01:06allocate 10 to 15 minutes at the end of
- 00:01:09the presentation to have a Q&A session
- 00:01:11with the team and the ambassador.
- 00:01:14I would like to let you know that this
- 00:01:15webinar will be recorded to make it
- 00:01:17available as a resource and I'm now
- 00:01:20handing over to Elellanena.
- 00:01:23Thank you Chloe. Um as Chloe said, my
- 00:01:26name is Elellanena. I am the summer
- 00:01:27school program coordinator. So that
- 00:01:29means I work in the admissions team
- 00:01:31within summer school. So if you've had
- 00:01:33any contact with us, that's um through
- 00:01:36email, live chat, on the phone, that's
- 00:01:37me and my team um responding to you and
- 00:01:40helping you out. So, I'm going to take
- 00:01:42you through a bit of what you can expect
- 00:01:44um from the first stages of your time
- 00:01:46with us at summer school. So, initially,
- 00:01:50we're going to advise you to arrive one
- 00:01:51or two days before the start of your
- 00:01:53course. This will just allow you to get
- 00:01:55situated in London, get used to any time
- 00:01:58difference that there may be between us
- 00:02:00here and wherever you're traveling from,
- 00:02:02and it allows you to start exploring the
- 00:02:04new city that you'll be in that will be
- 00:02:06your home for the summer as well. So
- 00:02:09depending on the session that you are
- 00:02:10attending, the registration dates are
- 00:02:13shown on the screen. So these take place
- 00:02:15on the Sunday before the start of your
- 00:02:18course. Um and so your first taste of
- 00:02:21summer school will be at this
- 00:02:23registration event um on the Sunday and
- 00:02:25we'll get into a bit more information
- 00:02:27about that in a second.
- 00:02:29So, as the majority of our students are
- 00:02:31international, um we would expect most
- 00:02:33of you to be arriving through one of the
- 00:02:35main London airports um that you can see
- 00:02:39um on the next slide. So, to get from
- 00:02:42the airport to LSE, we would advise the
- 00:02:45best way to do this um would be via
- 00:02:47public transport. Um Chloe, if we could
- 00:02:50just pop on to the next slide just so
- 00:02:51everyone can see. Thank you.
- 00:02:54Um, so public transport is going to be
- 00:02:56the quickest and cheapest way in general
- 00:02:58to get from the airport that you land at
- 00:03:00into central London. Um, as LSE is so
- 00:03:03centrally located, it's really well
- 00:03:05connected um on the London Tube as well
- 00:03:08as the trains and any buses as well. So,
- 00:03:12if you can have a look on the screen and
- 00:03:14find the um airport that you'll be
- 00:03:15landing into, um it gives you just a bit
- 00:03:18more information about the best way to
- 00:03:20get to the LSE campus. But yeah, do bear
- 00:03:23in mind that um if you're getting a taxi
- 00:03:26or an Uber, it's usually extremely
- 00:03:28expensive and much um much longer route
- 00:03:31to get to LSE than the public transport
- 00:03:33would
- 00:03:34be. So for your registration day, um as
- 00:03:38I said, this takes place on the Sunday.
- 00:03:41These will take place from midm morning
- 00:03:43to late afternoon. So each student will
- 00:03:46be given a time slot in which to attend
- 00:03:49this registration. These time slots will
- 00:03:52be emailed out to you roughly two or 3
- 00:03:54weeks prior to the start of your course.
- 00:03:57Um so do definitely keep an eye out on
- 00:03:59your emails for that information
- 00:04:02especially for session one. That timing
- 00:04:04is coming up quite quickly for you lot.
- 00:04:05So do keep an eye out. Um at this
- 00:04:08registration we'll have campus tours
- 00:04:10available. We'll have food outlets that
- 00:04:12are on and around campus to just keep
- 00:04:14you fed and you know your energy up
- 00:04:16ready for the start of your course with
- 00:04:18us. Um, there'll be music on campus. The
- 00:04:20LSC shop will be open. We've got brand
- 00:04:23new merchandise with a collaboration
- 00:04:24with Nike as well. So, some really great
- 00:04:27stuff for you to have a look at. We'll
- 00:04:29have members of our team also available.
- 00:04:32Have a a tent with um members who are
- 00:04:34going to talk about the social and spark
- 00:04:36events as well. What's really important
- 00:04:39is what you bring with you on that
- 00:04:40registration. You will need to bring
- 00:04:42your physical copy of your passport.
- 00:04:45It's really essential that we have the
- 00:04:47physical passport. If you have a photo
- 00:04:50copy or a picture of it, we won't be
- 00:04:52able to register you. It has to be the
- 00:04:54passport that you entered the UK on. You
- 00:04:57should also have on hand your LSE ID
- 00:04:59number. This will just be useful for us
- 00:05:02um in case there's any issues and we
- 00:05:03need to bring up your records. And
- 00:05:06finally, if you have a Visa or a BRP
- 00:05:08card, um again, a physical copy has to
- 00:05:11be produced of those. We can't have
- 00:05:12photos um or a print off of that. It has
- 00:05:15to be the physical
- 00:05:17copy. When you're arriving on that
- 00:05:19Sunday, we have a backdrop available for
- 00:05:22you. Um so you can come to the campus.
- 00:05:26We would advise you come to campus
- 00:05:27before you're checking into LSSE
- 00:05:29accommodation. So come along with your
- 00:05:31bags. You can drop them in the center
- 00:05:33building um and then come through to the
- 00:05:36registration.
- 00:05:38So once you've registered with us, um
- 00:05:41you can then book into your
- 00:05:42accommodation. The check-in for the
- 00:05:44majority of the halls starts at 300 p.m.
- 00:05:48But if you're in Sydney Web or Urban
- 00:05:49Nest, Westminster Bridge, that will be a
- 00:05:51400 p.m. check-in for you. Do just keep
- 00:05:54in mind that that bag drop will close
- 00:05:56roughly 30 minutes before the end of the
- 00:05:58registration. Um and you know, we don't
- 00:06:00want you to be without your bags for the
- 00:06:01first night in London. So do make sure
- 00:06:03you are um picking those up as well. If
- 00:06:06you've got if you have booked LSC
- 00:06:08accommodation and you've got any queries
- 00:06:09about that, we have a dedicated summer
- 00:06:11school accommodation team. Um so do get
- 00:06:14in touch with them if you've got any
- 00:06:15further
- 00:06:16questions. So the main registration on
- 00:06:19Sunday will be your course registration
- 00:06:21process. Within this you'll be given
- 00:06:24your LSE ID card. This gives you access
- 00:06:26throughout the whole of campus to all of
- 00:06:28the teaching buildings and everywhere
- 00:06:29you'll need to go throughout your course
- 00:06:31with us. So once you've been given that,
- 00:06:33make sure you keep um keep a hold of it
- 00:06:35and make sure you're not losing that
- 00:06:36over the three weeks. Um once you've
- 00:06:39registered with us, your timets will
- 00:06:41become available for your course. These
- 00:06:43will be visible on your LSCU account.
- 00:06:46The majority of you will have activated
- 00:06:48that account already, but do make sure
- 00:06:50it's activated and that you have current
- 00:06:52access to it. Um as that will be where
- 00:06:55that time table will be showing. So
- 00:06:56you'll need access to that throughout
- 00:06:58those three weeks.
- 00:07:00Um, in addition to this, you'll be able
- 00:07:03to activate your IT account. Um, now two
- 00:07:06or three days before the start of your
- 00:07:08course, you'll be sent the student
- 00:07:09handbook. Again, this will be through
- 00:07:11your email. So, we're going to ask you
- 00:07:12to keep a really good close eye on those
- 00:07:14emails and make sure you're reading
- 00:07:15everything that is being sent through to
- 00:07:17you as though that is really important
- 00:07:20information. So, the student handbook
- 00:07:22will include um information about how to
- 00:07:24access and activate your IT account as
- 00:07:27well as the Moodle system that we'll be
- 00:07:29using. So you'll have access to that
- 00:07:30once you've registered with us. Um in
- 00:07:33addition the student handbook has some
- 00:07:35really important information for you as
- 00:07:37well. So do keep an eye out for
- 00:07:41that. So in addition to this to get into
- 00:07:44the UK you need to just ensure that you
- 00:07:46have the correct visa information. So
- 00:07:49LSC has a specific visa advice team.
- 00:07:52They're such great team. and they're
- 00:07:53really well trained and they'll be there
- 00:07:55to assist you or provide any guidance
- 00:07:57that you might need in any visa
- 00:07:59processes. Um, you can find their web
- 00:08:01query form on their website. Just fill
- 00:08:04out what you're asking them, your
- 00:08:06specific information, and they'll get
- 00:08:07back to you as soon as
- 00:08:09possible. Um, it's important to note
- 00:08:11that ETA, so electronic travel
- 00:08:14authorization documents, um, are newly
- 00:08:17in place for travel to the UK. um we
- 00:08:21would advise you to have a look on the
- 00:08:23UK government website to just see if
- 00:08:25that's something that you need to um be
- 00:08:28getting before travel to the UK. Those
- 00:08:31cost £16 to apply. Um and we make want
- 00:08:35to make sure that you're using the UK
- 00:08:37ETA app or the gov.uk website to buy
- 00:08:41those. If you're booking through third
- 00:08:43party websites, they can inflate the
- 00:08:45price and it will be the exact same
- 00:08:46product. So just go through to the
- 00:08:48gov.uk UK website to have a look at
- 00:08:50that. Um, we also have visa letters
- 00:08:53available for the from the office team.
- 00:08:56You can order those through the LSE
- 00:08:58eShop. If you've not used the eShop
- 00:09:00before, um, you will need to register
- 00:09:02for a new account with that before you
- 00:09:04can place your order
- 00:09:05successfully. Once you've placed that
- 00:09:07order, that comes through to us in the
- 00:09:10admissions team. We need to check that
- 00:09:12you've paid your full tuition fees and
- 00:09:14if you've booked LSSE accommodation, we
- 00:09:16need to receive your full accommodation
- 00:09:19fees as well. We'll then manually
- 00:09:21generate that letter for you and send it
- 00:09:22back to you as a PDF via email. Um, and
- 00:09:25that happens as soon as possible once
- 00:09:27we've received that all the fees
- 00:09:29relevant to your
- 00:09:31application. So once you've started your
- 00:09:34course with us, um, you will have
- 00:09:36teaching through lectures and seminars.
- 00:09:38The lectures are inclusive of the full
- 00:09:42cohort from your course. So everyone on
- 00:09:44your course will be in that one lecture.
- 00:09:46Um and those will take place over 3
- 00:09:49hours. So it's expected that you'll have
- 00:09:51one lecture every day and one seminar.
- 00:09:53So seminars are in smaller groups. So
- 00:09:56it's approximately 20 students and they
- 00:09:58will be 90 minutes long. Once you've
- 00:10:01been allocated a class group, you won't
- 00:10:03be able to change those. So just bear
- 00:10:05that in mind. um that you know it's a
- 00:10:08really unique experience for you to um
- 00:10:12branch out and have that unique social
- 00:10:15um opportunity to meet people from all
- 00:10:17over the world who are you know really
- 00:10:19likeminded like you are trying to um
- 00:10:22improve their CV and just gain some more
- 00:10:24knowledge from their time with us at
- 00:10:26summer school. So if you're not in a in
- 00:10:28a class group with maybe one of your
- 00:10:30friends that you've traveled with um
- 00:10:31take it as an opportunity to really
- 00:10:33build those friendships. Um, and we know
- 00:10:36students love to build their LSSE, their
- 00:10:38um, LinkedIn profiles when they're with
- 00:10:41us. So, this is a great place to start
- 00:10:42doing that. Um, across the three weeks,
- 00:10:45you'll receive 54 hours of teaching
- 00:10:47time. So, overall, that's 36 hours of
- 00:10:49lectures and 18 hours of seminars. Um,
- 00:10:52as and as I'm sure you know, the LSE
- 00:10:56summer school courses are based on LSE
- 00:10:58undergraduate modules. Um, and they're
- 00:11:00taught by the same world-class faculty.
- 00:11:02So you're still getting that really top
- 00:11:04level um LSE teaching that um LSE is
- 00:11:08known for across the
- 00:11:10world. So once you finish your course
- 00:11:12with us um the final exams take place on
- 00:11:15the last day of each session. The exam
- 00:11:18timetable will be circulated during the
- 00:11:20session itself. Um and exams can finish
- 00:11:23as late as 6:00 p.m. on the last Friday.
- 00:11:25So do bear that in mind when you're
- 00:11:26booking flights um back home. We would
- 00:11:30advise you to stay for the Friday
- 00:11:32evening. There's a leaving party which
- 00:11:33is a great um great way to say goodbye
- 00:11:36to all the friends that you've made. CC
- 00:11:37will touch on that later. Um but yeah,
- 00:11:40we advise you to stay for the Friday
- 00:11:41night and maybe fly home on the Saturday
- 00:11:43just to make it as easy as possible for
- 00:11:45you. Um, regarding exams, exams are not
- 00:11:49compulsory, but if you're taking your
- 00:11:52course with us for credit at your home
- 00:11:54university, firstly, you need to have
- 00:11:57that approved by your university, that
- 00:12:00your home institution is the one that um
- 00:12:02gives the credit to you, not LSE. So,
- 00:12:04you need to make sure that's approved
- 00:12:06before you come to LSC. Um, and also, if
- 00:12:10you're taking the course for credit,
- 00:12:11you'll need to receive a graded
- 00:12:13certificate. To do that, you need to sit
- 00:12:16and submit the mid session and the final
- 00:12:19exams. So, just bear that in mind if you
- 00:12:21are hearing that, you know, the exams
- 00:12:23aren't compulsory. If you're wanting to
- 00:12:25do the course for credit, it is
- 00:12:26compulsory for you to do the
- 00:12:28exams. If you're not taking the course
- 00:12:31for credit and you're just wanting to do
- 00:12:32the um course to get a bit more
- 00:12:34information and broaden your scope of
- 00:12:36knowledge, that's absolutely fine. You
- 00:12:38don't have to take the exams if you
- 00:12:39don't want to. Um, if you've attended at
- 00:12:42least 75% of your seminar classes and
- 00:12:44don't take those exams, your
- 00:12:46documentation will state that you're
- 00:12:47attended. Um, and if you've taking less
- 00:12:50than 75% of the seminar classes, the
- 00:12:53documents will state
- 00:12:55registered. So, just bear in mind that
- 00:12:56if you are taking those exams, there's
- 00:12:58no exceptions for taking them at the
- 00:13:00time and the date that is given.
- 00:13:05So, most of you, I would expect, are
- 00:13:07staying at LSE
- 00:13:09accommodation. This is a really great
- 00:13:11environment to be in. It's extremely
- 00:13:13social and it's going to really
- 00:13:15encourage you to make the most of your
- 00:13:16time at LSSE. Um, and broaden the scope
- 00:13:19of students that you're making friends
- 00:13:21with, that you're having conversations
- 00:13:22with. Um, and that's really going to
- 00:13:25have a significant impact on your time
- 00:13:27with us. We recommend the LSC
- 00:13:30accommodation halls um as they are
- 00:13:33centrally located. They're really great
- 00:13:35value especially in central London over
- 00:13:38the summer. It's extremely touristy so
- 00:13:39the prices do go up quite a lot. Um so
- 00:13:42the LSIC pools are a great option for
- 00:13:45this. Um they have 24/7 security and
- 00:13:49breakfast is also included in these. If
- 00:13:52you are booking um accommodation outside
- 00:13:54of LSE, just make sure to check any
- 00:13:57reviews and the legitimity of the site
- 00:13:58before you're booking that just to avoid
- 00:14:00any issues down the
- 00:14:02line. Once you're in London, we would
- 00:14:05advise that students budget roughly £40
- 00:14:07a day to include your food and your
- 00:14:10travel. It's extremely variable how much
- 00:14:13you will spend a day and how much you
- 00:14:15can spend a day. We're aware that many
- 00:14:17students are on a much tighter budget
- 00:14:19than that and it's very easy to, you
- 00:14:21know, really slim that down and spend
- 00:14:23less than4 a day, but also I'm sure that
- 00:14:26some of you are ready to spash out and
- 00:14:27have a great summer. So again, it's very
- 00:14:30easy in London to spend more than that,
- 00:14:31but so it's extremely variable, but we
- 00:14:34would recommend roughly £40 a day should
- 00:14:36um be sufficient for
- 00:14:38you. So I'm sure that a lot of you are
- 00:14:40starting to think about what you're
- 00:14:42wanting to pack to come to summer
- 00:14:44school. Um, so even though the um the
- 00:14:48courses are part of the summer school,
- 00:14:50as I'm sure you're aware, London is not
- 00:14:52always sunny and hot. So you need to be
- 00:14:56packing for a large majority of
- 00:14:58different weathers. So although some
- 00:15:01some days it will be extremely warm and
- 00:15:03you'll need um your sun cream and maybe
- 00:15:06a sun hat, the next day might be
- 00:15:08torrential rain. So be prepared to pack
- 00:15:11for all sorts of different weathers.
- 00:15:13Regarding your course, make sure you
- 00:15:15bring a laptop, a calculator
- 00:15:17potentially, and also it's really
- 00:15:19important you should bring an adapter
- 00:15:20just to make sure you can charge
- 00:15:22everything. And the plugs in the UK is
- 00:15:23slightly different to other areas. Um,
- 00:15:26but also don't stress too much about the
- 00:15:28clothes that you're bringing. As we're
- 00:15:30so centrally located in London, there's
- 00:15:32plenty of shops around. So, anything
- 00:15:34that you miss, you'll be able to buy.
- 00:15:38So, if you're um in central London for
- 00:15:41LSSE, you might be wanting to travel
- 00:15:43around London, see different areas, and
- 00:15:45the best way to do this is public
- 00:15:47transport. The London public transport
- 00:15:49is one of the best and most famous
- 00:15:51transport systems in the world. I'm sure
- 00:15:53you all recognize the red buses, the
- 00:15:55black cabs, and the underground tube
- 00:15:57stations as well. Um, we would recommend
- 00:16:00having a look at the Transport for
- 00:16:02London website. This is the company that
- 00:16:04run all the buses and the tubes. Um it
- 00:16:07will have up to-ate information and also
- 00:16:09information about an Oyster card. So you
- 00:16:12can have a look as that will provide you
- 00:16:14with some cheaper travel and see if
- 00:16:15that's um useful to you. But also you
- 00:16:18can just tap in and out. It's really
- 00:16:20simple with a bank card or your Apple
- 00:16:22Pay or um anything like that. So it's a
- 00:16:24really simple system to
- 00:16:26use. Also the Citymapper app is really
- 00:16:30well loved by Londoners. Again, it
- 00:16:32provides up to-date um information and
- 00:16:36it will include more than one sort of
- 00:16:38transportation for you to use with
- 00:16:40getting around London. So, it will be
- 00:16:41buses, tubes, um bikes, whether it's
- 00:16:44walking is quicker, um all of that as
- 00:16:47well. So, we would really strongly
- 00:16:48advise you download that city mapper
- 00:16:50app. Also, while you're in London, it's
- 00:16:53a really good opportunity to explore the
- 00:16:55UK beyond the city of London as well.
- 00:16:57So, there's a link to the
- 00:16:59trainline.com website here, and that
- 00:17:02will give you really good and easy
- 00:17:03advice and train routes um to get to
- 00:17:06cities further out than London. Um, and
- 00:17:09it's a great opportunity to explore the
- 00:17:11UK as a
- 00:17:12whole. There's also other options to
- 00:17:15transport around. Firstly would be
- 00:17:17walking. Um, London is a really walkable
- 00:17:20city and sometimes a tube map can be a
- 00:17:23little bit confusing where it can
- 00:17:24deceive you as places look really far
- 00:17:26apart, but actually they are very
- 00:17:27walkable, especially with LSE being so
- 00:17:30central. Um, you know, one way from us,
- 00:17:32you can walk 10 or 15 minutes and be on
- 00:17:35the end of Oxford Street. You walk the
- 00:17:37other way 10 minutes, you can be at St.
- 00:17:38Paul's Cathedral. So, um, it's, you
- 00:17:41know, good to have a look at about how
- 00:17:43far it is to walk as well. and make sure
- 00:17:44you bring some good walking shoes as I'm
- 00:17:46sure you'll be doing quite a lot. Um,
- 00:17:49there are Santandere higher bikes and
- 00:17:51line bikes and scooters around as well
- 00:17:53which you can um hire and help you get
- 00:17:56around very quickly as well as um taxis
- 00:18:00and mini cows which are also available
- 00:18:02to book as
- 00:18:03well. So, at this point I'm going to
- 00:18:06bring in Alex who's one of our summer
- 00:18:08school ambassadors. Um, so Alex, if
- 00:18:10you're there, do you want to introduce
- 00:18:12yourself? um about maybe tell us about
- 00:18:14the course that you attended at summer
- 00:18:15school last year and um the home
- 00:18:18university that you've come from.
- 00:18:21Sure. Thank you so much, Eleanor. Um so
- 00:18:23my name is Alex Sass like Eleanor said
- 00:18:25and I am uh I am in school at the
- 00:18:29University of Florida. So I am entering
- 00:18:32my senior year now and I am a biology
- 00:18:35major but an economics minor. Um at LSE
- 00:18:39last year I was there for session three.
- 00:18:41So the last session of the summer and I
- 00:18:43took the course called EC 104 which is
- 00:18:46the wealth and poverty of nations and I
- 00:18:49would describe it as this really cool
- 00:18:51history economics crossover course that
- 00:18:53kind of tells you that basically says in
- 00:18:56in the first day it's like okay look at
- 00:18:58the world everyone has very different
- 00:19:00economic conditions but it probably
- 00:19:02didn't start like that. So let's go all
- 00:19:04the way back. Let's look at the
- 00:19:05transition um like Neolithic Revolution,
- 00:19:09hunter gatherers, and then let's really
- 00:19:11really fast-paced in three weeks uh take
- 00:19:14you all the way up to where we are now
- 00:19:15and see kind of where our paths
- 00:19:17diverted. So that's um that's the course
- 00:19:20I took and it was very cool to take a
- 00:19:22course on economic inequality because I
- 00:19:24had just come from I actually flew
- 00:19:26straight to London from an internship in
- 00:19:28Tanzania where I was working at a
- 00:19:30hospital there near Mount Kilimanjaro
- 00:19:33and so I was being exposed to um the
- 00:19:35Tanzanian medical system and seeing a
- 00:19:37lot of inequality when comparing that
- 00:19:39with kind of the medical care we have in
- 00:19:41the US or the medical care that's
- 00:19:43available in the UK. So, uh, I really
- 00:19:45loved my course and I'll I'll see if
- 00:19:48Ellen wants to kind of direct me a
- 00:19:49little more to talk about any any
- 00:19:50specific part of it. Of course. Yeah,
- 00:19:53thank you for that introduction. Um, do
- 00:19:55you want to see if you can explain the
- 00:19:57aspects of the course that you found
- 00:19:59particularly enjoyable? Maybe if there's
- 00:20:01anything about the course structure or
- 00:20:03the teaching style or the content that
- 00:20:05you really enjoyed. Of course. Yeah. So,
- 00:20:07I got I got really lucky. I had both. I
- 00:20:10think this is kind of the case though
- 00:20:11for all of the LSSE courses. They just
- 00:20:12have amazing faculty. But I really
- 00:20:14enjoyed both professors who taught my
- 00:20:17course. So the the first week and a half
- 00:20:19was taught by one professor and then the
- 00:20:21second week and a half by another. But
- 00:20:23both of them were really excellent and
- 00:20:25experts on the topics they were
- 00:20:26teaching. The the uh the teaching you
- 00:20:29receive at LSSE is truly worldclass.
- 00:20:31These people are incredible experts in
- 00:20:33their field. So I would just urge all
- 00:20:35students to take advantage of that. Um I
- 00:20:38know it can be easy to be like, "Oh, I'm
- 00:20:40in London. I want to do this weekend
- 00:20:41trip, so I'm going to miss Friday
- 00:20:43lecture or something like that. But I
- 00:20:44would urge you like remember why you're
- 00:20:46coming. Your primary goal is to learn.
- 00:20:48Um, and you're not not ever probably
- 00:20:50going to have an experience like that
- 00:20:52and an opportunity to learn from people
- 00:20:53who have this much expertise on the
- 00:20:55subject matter that you're engaging
- 00:20:57with. Uh I think my favorite part of the
- 00:21:00course though I did I really loved the
- 00:21:02lecture component and I know Elanor
- 00:21:04talked a little bit about kind of how it
- 00:21:05works with your lectures and your
- 00:21:07seminars and for different courses it's
- 00:21:09different but for me I had seminar or
- 00:21:12discussion um some people call it like
- 00:21:14recitation in the morning and then I had
- 00:21:16lecture in the afternoon. Um but the
- 00:21:18seminar really was my favorite component
- 00:21:21of the course. you get in small groups
- 00:21:23of I think my my group was around 10 to
- 00:21:2612 and my overall lecture was like a
- 00:21:28hundred kids so there were around eight
- 00:21:30or nine different um seminar sections
- 00:21:33but you get in these seminars and you
- 00:21:34have a uh usually a PhD student who's
- 00:21:37teaching that portion and I think they
- 00:21:40they are just excellent at really
- 00:21:42getting you to engage with the material.
- 00:21:44They'll push you and challenge you and
- 00:21:46get you to like healthfully debate with
- 00:21:47your classmates. Um, and I think at
- 00:21:50least for me being at a big university
- 00:21:52in the US and being mostly in like
- 00:21:54pretty large classes, which is pretty
- 00:21:56common when you're studying a um a hard
- 00:21:58science or anything really in the
- 00:22:00science, technology, engineering, math
- 00:22:02fields, you're you're not really getting
- 00:22:04to like argue with 10 people and really
- 00:22:06get into it. And I think the um the grad
- 00:22:10students do an amazing job of
- 00:22:11facilitating that. I would say one one
- 00:22:14last point on that is it's really hard
- 00:22:17to contribute well and learn a lot
- 00:22:19especially in your seminars if you're
- 00:22:21underprepared. Um depending on the class
- 00:22:24you take you might have you know problem
- 00:22:26sets or reading but mostly what I needed
- 00:22:29to be doing outside of class besides
- 00:22:30writing my essays and studying for my
- 00:22:32exam. Um but besides that was you're
- 00:22:34given a kind of a set of readings each
- 00:22:36week and for each different seminar. And
- 00:22:39I would just say I know it's easy to
- 00:22:40kind of slack off on those, but you
- 00:22:42really don't gain as much and you don't
- 00:22:44enjoy as much from the seminar
- 00:22:45discussions unless you've read through
- 00:22:47that material at least once um and kind
- 00:22:49of gotten the main ideas so that you can
- 00:22:52thoughtfully contribute and benefit from
- 00:22:54what your classmates are saying. That's
- 00:22:57really great to hear what you've taken
- 00:22:58from the course. Thank you. I've got one
- 00:23:00more question for you. Um so if you
- 00:23:03think back, how did you prepare yourself
- 00:23:05before traveling to London? there any
- 00:23:08tips or tricks that um you think is
- 00:23:10really important for these new students
- 00:23:11attending this year?
- 00:23:14Um I would say a couple of things. So
- 00:23:16one more like a perspective and then
- 00:23:17maybe a little more practical. So first
- 00:23:20from a perspective I would just say
- 00:23:21remember that almost everyone who's
- 00:23:24going there um doesn't know each other,
- 00:23:26right? Of course you'll get a couple
- 00:23:28kids who end up being like, "Oh, one of
- 00:23:29my friends from my home university is
- 00:23:31here." and that's great, but I really do
- 00:23:33think there's a huge benefit to the fact
- 00:23:34that most people are coming in and uh
- 00:23:37they don't they don't really know anyone
- 00:23:38and you're probably in a new city and so
- 00:23:41like take advantage of that. Um find
- 00:23:43people to, you know, study or prep for
- 00:23:45exams with or write essays with and find
- 00:23:47people to just explore with. you know, I
- 00:23:49I met girls in my course um who we had
- 00:23:53forgotten that there was the deadline
- 00:23:54for the the Oxford weekend trip and so
- 00:23:57we all just decided to like group
- 00:23:59together and figure out a train and we
- 00:24:00went and we had a great adventure in
- 00:24:02Oxford and some of those girls went uh
- 00:24:04on the boat party with me, which I
- 00:24:06highly recommend if you haven't signed
- 00:24:08up for the boat party. Super fun. Um
- 00:24:10there's like food and dancing and music
- 00:24:12and I met lots of lots of people and the
- 00:24:14views are really unbeatable um on the
- 00:24:15river temps. So, I would say bring bring
- 00:24:19a perspective of this is a great
- 00:24:20opportunity to meet friends. Everyone's
- 00:24:22in the same boat. Don't get
- 00:24:23self-conscious about the fact that
- 00:24:25you're um adapting to a new situation
- 00:24:27because basically everyone else is too.
- 00:24:29And then from a practical tip, um I
- 00:24:31would just really reiterate the point,
- 00:24:34Citymapper is your best friend. Um, I
- 00:24:36grew up in the Washington DC area and I
- 00:24:39didn't now that I when I come back and
- 00:24:41visit I'm like, "Oh, I wish I had known
- 00:24:42about Citymapper when I was growing up
- 00:24:44because it makes it easier there." But
- 00:24:46the tube is absolutely the best way to
- 00:24:49get around London. Except walking also
- 00:24:51is great. But, uh, get comfortable with
- 00:24:54the tube early on. Just like force
- 00:24:55yourself into it. Don't be afraid to ask
- 00:24:57people questions if you're trying to
- 00:24:59figure out some line, but City Mapper is
- 00:25:01is generally pretty good. Um, so yeah,
- 00:25:04practically use City Mapper or walk. I
- 00:25:06walked a ton when I was in London, which
- 00:25:08is great, too. Um, and yeah, bring an
- 00:25:12umbrella. That's great. Thanks so much,
- 00:25:14Alex. And yeah, as Alex was saying,
- 00:25:16we're really encouraging students just
- 00:25:17to jump in. It might be slightly outside
- 00:25:19your comfort zone, but this is a really
- 00:25:22unique opportunity that you've um signed
- 00:25:24up for. So, do make really make the most
- 00:25:26of your three weeks with us um because
- 00:25:28it's going to translate back to your
- 00:25:30home universities, back to your life at
- 00:25:31home. Um, so make the most of it where
- 00:25:34you can. Thank you, Alex. We will, I
- 00:25:36believe, be hearing from you a bit later
- 00:25:37on as well. Um, I'm now going to pass
- 00:25:40over to Chloe who's going to tell you a
- 00:25:43little bit more about what you can
- 00:25:44expect from London and the local area.
- 00:25:47Thanks, Elena, and thanks again, Alex,
- 00:25:49for sharing about um all the hacking
- 00:25:52tips, how you managed to make friends
- 00:25:53through exploration in London and also
- 00:25:56beyond the city of London as well. So
- 00:25:58Ellen has covered through a large part
- 00:26:00about all the practical information in
- 00:26:02terms of how to prepare for your arrival
- 00:26:04date and also a bit about how to
- 00:26:07navigate within the city. So once you
- 00:26:09figure out about navigating about the
- 00:26:11city, it means that you can actually
- 00:26:13start exploring London at the tips of a
- 00:26:15finger. Of course there are a lot to see
- 00:26:17and to do beyond the campus. Um, so the
- 00:26:21city is full of amazing historical site,
- 00:26:23museums, parks, art gallery, theaters,
- 00:26:27and so much more. So whether you're into
- 00:26:29culture, history, or just want to relax
- 00:26:31in a beautiful green space with friends
- 00:26:33made in a summer school, there's always
- 00:26:35something for you. And of course, food
- 00:26:38is another thing you would not need to
- 00:26:40worry about. In fact, this is the best
- 00:26:42thing that um about living in London
- 00:26:45because you've got cafes and restaurants
- 00:26:47very close by the campus or if you want
- 00:26:49to walk to the city center for like 10
- 00:26:52minutes, you get to Coven Garden or
- 00:26:54other places where you can find a very
- 00:26:57large diversified uh food option. Um,
- 00:27:01and if you don't feel like going out for
- 00:27:03some of the days just because we
- 00:27:04mentioned they're going to be like
- 00:27:06midterm assessment as a final assessment
- 00:27:08and you want to really stick to your
- 00:27:10desk doing a bit more studies, that's no
- 00:27:13problem at all. We we do have apps like
- 00:27:15Deliveroo and Uber Eats that makes it
- 00:27:18easy for you to get delivered straight
- 00:27:19to your door or get to, you know, get
- 00:27:22Tempest so that you can have a fill bag
- 00:27:24of food before getting back to the
- 00:27:26study.
- 00:27:28Um so just now we covered a bit about
- 00:27:30what to pack and Elena has mentioned
- 00:27:32that if you are missing out a few items
- 00:27:36or if you like more like a light packed
- 00:27:38traveler is entirely fine just because
- 00:27:41shopping in London is never a problem.
- 00:27:43So whatever you're looking for chances
- 00:27:45are that you find it here. So on the
- 00:27:48slide we have a few spot recommended to
- 00:27:50you. So in off the street you can
- 00:27:53definitely find some major high street
- 00:27:55brands for clothes for shoes or the
- 00:27:59closest spot uh near to the LC main
- 00:28:02campus and the coing gardens you there
- 00:28:04will be some more options surrounding
- 00:28:06bouties and street performers or if
- 00:28:08you're a fan into like alternative
- 00:28:10fashion and food you can also get to the
- 00:28:12camp market. Of course, there is a sport
- 00:28:14that I can't cover it all at once for
- 00:28:17now, but definitely you can check out
- 00:28:19what you like to do during your
- 00:28:21non-class hours. And again, it might be
- 00:28:23some good starting point for you to make
- 00:28:25friends in summer
- 00:28:27school. And of course, London is a home
- 00:28:29to a lot of iconic stadiums, legendary
- 00:28:32teams, and we have actually hosted more
- 00:28:34summer Olympics and Champion leagues
- 00:28:36final than any other city. So if you are
- 00:28:39a sport lovers, there will be something
- 00:28:42for you to check out, especially during
- 00:28:43the weekend, whether you want a short
- 00:28:45break from your
- 00:28:49study. The London is often taxed with
- 00:28:52the perception of being expensive, but
- 00:28:54the good thing is if you budget wisely,
- 00:28:57you can still have an amazing time here
- 00:28:59without
- 00:29:00overspending. So here are a few simple
- 00:29:03money-saving tips helped you out. First
- 00:29:06of all, check out the student views from
- 00:29:07the LSC student union just because they
- 00:29:10will try to best deal uh for you while
- 00:29:13you're studying here for summer school.
- 00:29:15So, there are things like culture
- 00:29:17tickets for people who are under 25 that
- 00:29:19gets you a discounted price with some
- 00:29:21theater shows. Um there are also some
- 00:29:23traveling discount and also some
- 00:29:25restaurant offers. Uh the second thing
- 00:29:28is you can definitely sign up for the
- 00:29:30sea food club app just because you'll be
- 00:29:32able to get free hot train for the first
- 00:29:34time registration and you can also earn
- 00:29:37some points every time when you buy food
- 00:29:38on the
- 00:29:40campus and like Ellena has mentioned
- 00:29:43London is pretty much a walkable city so
- 00:29:45you can actually walk whenever you can.
- 00:29:48In central London, loads of places are
- 00:29:50actually only a 15 to 20 minutes of
- 00:29:52walk. So, it's a great way to explore
- 00:29:55city without thinning out your
- 00:29:57wallet. And of course, don't miss out on
- 00:30:00the free museums and the exhibitions.
- 00:30:03Places like the British Museums, Take
- 00:30:05Men, and the National Gallery, they've
- 00:30:07got free exhibition session that you can
- 00:30:09definitely check out after class. And
- 00:30:12finally, if you can try cooking some of
- 00:30:15your meals, it will save you money and
- 00:30:17also give you a taste of home,
- 00:30:22too. So, I'm just going to give you a
- 00:30:24bit more hacking tips about how you
- 00:30:26manage currency and banking over here.
- 00:30:29So, London is majority a cashless city.
- 00:30:32So, it means that you can um done all
- 00:30:35the transaction with just one debit or
- 00:30:37credit card with you. Uh that said, be
- 00:30:40aware that your bank might charge
- 00:30:41international fees when you use your car
- 00:30:43here. So what we advise is that before
- 00:30:46you travel, check what fees apply and
- 00:30:49maybe consider a card with a lower
- 00:30:50charges if you
- 00:30:52can. As Ellena mentioned before, it
- 00:30:55might be worth getting a prepaid travel
- 00:30:57card, which is known as an Oyster card
- 00:30:59for cheap per travel on buses and
- 00:31:01trains. And also let your bank know that
- 00:31:04you're traveling. That way your cop
- 00:31:07won't get blocked it for any suspicious
- 00:31:09activity when you start using it in
- 00:31:11London. And if your bank has a mobile
- 00:31:14app, download it just because it will
- 00:31:16just make your life easier to check your
- 00:31:18balance or keep track of all your
- 00:31:20spending while you're abroad here in
- 00:31:23London. Just as an additional note,
- 00:31:25there's no need for you to open a UK
- 00:31:27bank account here. Your home account is
- 00:31:30totally fine for a short stay like this.
- 00:31:32And sometimes it may take you actually
- 00:31:34some extra time or even extra paperwork
- 00:31:37if you're opening a bank account over
- 00:31:39here. So you can feel free to stick with
- 00:31:41your home account to use while you're
- 00:31:44spending your stay
- 00:31:46here. And finally try to use contactless
- 00:31:49payment like Apple Pay, Google Pay or
- 00:31:51Tap to Pay cards because they're also
- 00:31:53very super common here when you're doing
- 00:31:55any transaction and they're very
- 00:31:57convenient for small purchases. So make
- 00:31:59sure you can test it out uh before you
- 00:32:02travel to London because sometimes it
- 00:32:04requires you to verify your identity and
- 00:32:06there are few more steps. Uh so make
- 00:32:08sure you try all of these uh things try
- 00:32:11down the apps you need before coming
- 00:32:13through.
- 00:32:18For now, I'm just going to provide some
- 00:32:19useful information in case if you have
- 00:32:22any safety issue on campus and also in
- 00:32:24London just because we understand that
- 00:32:26sometimes you may be traveling together
- 00:32:28with your friends and sometimes there
- 00:32:30may be cases that you will need to
- 00:32:31travel by
- 00:32:33yourself. So on the LSC uh campus we
- 00:32:36operate an open campus policy meaning
- 00:32:39that there will be public area that are
- 00:32:41easily accessible.
- 00:32:43While we have a 247 security team
- 00:32:46available on campus, we will always
- 00:32:48encourage our students to keep an eye on
- 00:32:50your valuables and prevent leaving them
- 00:32:53unattended, especially in the public
- 00:32:55area like the library or the gar. And of
- 00:32:58course, if you see anything suspicious
- 00:33:00on campus, you can always reach out to
- 00:33:03the LC security team. uh and in a
- 00:33:06life-threatening emergency basically
- 00:33:08call 999 or 1112 for
- 00:33:11assistance. Throughout the summer school
- 00:33:13period, we will also have a walk-in
- 00:33:15office operating during the office hour.
- 00:33:19So, this is located at corner house
- 00:33:21ground floor
- 00:33:23G.02. So in the case if you need
- 00:33:25anything from the team or you basically
- 00:33:28just want to have an in-person chat uh
- 00:33:30regarding your summer school experience
- 00:33:32with one of SP staff member feel free to
- 00:33:35hold
- 00:33:38by. If you're looking for well-being
- 00:33:41support we also have a team of qualified
- 00:33:43counselors who can provide confidential
- 00:33:45one-to-one sessions. There's also a
- 00:33:48hotline in operation plus a series of
- 00:33:50workshop running across the summer
- 00:33:52school period that support your
- 00:33:53well-being. We also want to advise to
- 00:33:56all of our international students that
- 00:33:58they take out and medical insurance to
- 00:34:01ensure that you will be readily covered
- 00:34:04for any health care services in the UK.
- 00:34:07And again, if you encounter any medical
- 00:34:10emergency, it will be best for you to
- 00:34:12call 999. a non-emergency for example
- 00:34:16you might be having an headache or you
- 00:34:18might need some health care advisor you
- 00:34:21can also look up the NHS soho walk-in
- 00:34:24center or the se dentist to see whether
- 00:34:27there are any services you like to
- 00:34:32take I'm now handing over the session to
- 00:34:35CC uh who will go through the social
- 00:34:38program as well as the spark
- 00:34:39professional skill program with you
- 00:34:42thank you so much Chloe Hey, fantastic.
- 00:34:45So, my name is Cece and as mentioned
- 00:34:47before, I am the events officer for you
- 00:34:49all this summer. So, if you see me, do
- 00:34:51say hi. So, now I'll be talking about
- 00:34:53the social programs that we're running

- 00:34:56exciting. So, the social program forms a
- 00:34:58central part of your summer school
- 00:35:00experience. So, you must do something
- 00:35:02when you get here. We run a wide range
- 00:35:04of social events which will help you

- 00:35:12Every year we hear from students that
- 00:35:15these events are literally an integral
- 00:35:17part of their summer school experience.
- 00:35:19So I hope that you also join in with
- 00:35:21them this year. We offer a mixture of
- 00:35:24free or ticketed events with something
- 00:35:26on offer every day both on and off
- 00:35:30campus. This includes, listen carefully,
- 00:35:33walk-in tours through historic London,
- 00:35:35the boat party as mentioned before by
- 00:35:37Alex on the temps, trips to world famous
- 00:35:40towns of Oxford, Cambridge and Windsor.
- 00:35:44You also have the option of West End
- 00:35:45theater trips. Oo, which include the
- 00:35:48Lion King, Lemis, the Phantom of the
- 00:35:50Opera and more. And the ever popular
- 00:35:53leaving party. You have to go. You have
- 00:35:55to sign up as soon as possible where you
- 00:35:58can dress up and if you want to, of
- 00:35:59course, and obviously say farewell to
- 00:36:01the friends you made. Now, you also have
- 00:36:05access to the LSC gym membership. So,
- 00:36:07once you come in, once you come to

- 00:36:13prepared for you. So, we've got LSC gym
- 00:36:15membership. We also have fitness classes
- 00:36:17such as yoga and you're able to do drop
- 00:36:20in sessions such as basketball and um we
- 00:36:25have got a fantastic facility honestly
- 00:36:27sports facility available in the
- 00:36:29Marshall building. Once you come you
- 00:36:30should definitely sign up. So we also
- 00:36:33have new events. So every year we'll try
- 00:36:35our best to do something new. So this
- 00:36:38year some of our new events if you are
- 00:36:40interested in sports we are bringing in
- 00:36:43pickle ball this year. So, it'll be my
- 00:36:45first time trying, so I'm going to try
- 00:36:46it, too. Um, if you're interested in
- 00:36:48singing or you're just here for the good
- 00:36:50vibes, we have karaoke. We also have a
- 00:36:53funf fair themed event taking place. So,
- 00:36:55more information to come. Um, we also

- 00:37:04globe. And if you love theater, as
- 00:37:06mentioned before, there will be new
- 00:37:08tickets for Wicked, The Mousetrap, and
- 00:37:12others. Yeah. Yeah, it should be very
- 00:37:15exciting. So definitely look out for
- 00:37:17those. Um please note listen very
- 00:37:20carefully because it's really important
- 00:37:22these events especially the free events
- 00:37:24are over subscribed. So it's a case of
- 00:37:26free um first come first serve. So the
- 00:37:29minute you register so the um events
- 00:37:33will be available 2 weeks before you
- 00:37:35come at 12:00 p.m. British time. Okay.
- 00:37:38So, you need to register as soon as
- 00:37:40possible and then once you arrive, when
- 00:37:42the day comes, you make sure you arrive
- 00:37:44as soon as possible so you can
- 00:37:45definitely be there for the event. But
- 00:37:48don't worry, we'll provide all the
- 00:37:49information when you get here. So, don't
- 00:37:51you stress too much. So, please note,
- 00:37:54just remember that it's not mandatory.
- 00:37:56You have to go to these events, but it's
- 00:37:58definitely worth it, honestly. And
- 00:38:00personally, my personal favorite was
- 00:38:03going to Harry Potter. I really enjoyed
- 00:38:04it. Like, I felt like a wizard that day.
- 00:38:06So, I definitely recommend you come to
- 00:38:08Harry Potter if you are a fan. So, yeah,
- 00:38:11without further ado, enough about me,
- 00:38:14enough me talking. I'm going to ask Eli
- 00:38:16to join us. I'm going to ask Eli a few
- 00:38:19questions.
- 00:38:23Yeah. Hello, Hello, Eli. How are
- 00:38:25you? Uh, yeah, I'm good. I'm good. How's
- 00:38:28it going? It is going well. I'm so
- 00:38:30excited to ask you these questions. So,
- 00:38:33I want you to please introduce yourself
- 00:38:35and just let us know where and what you
- 00:38:37currently study.
- 00:38:40So, uh hello everyone. My name is Ellie,
- 00:38:42not Eli, but all good. Uh uh so I'm
- 00:38:47studying at the University of Sanalan in
- 00:38:50Switzerland. Uh I'm enrolled in an
- 00:38:53economics bachelor and uh last year I
- 00:38:56was part of session two uh international
- 00:38:59relation course uh
- 00:39:02IR20 which was about the west the bricks
- 00:39:05and uh the crisis of the international
- 00:39:08order. So yeah very happy to be there
- 00:39:11and to um uh share you my experience.
- 00:39:14Perfect. Thank you so much. So my next
- 00:39:17question is for you to share with us
- 00:39:19your experience and insight regarding
- 00:39:21the social programs that you attended
- 00:39:24and what types of activities and events
- 00:39:26were included in what you did.
- 00:39:29Yeah. So the the social event was
- 00:39:31definitely a highlight of the um of of
- 00:39:34uh the the LSC summer school. Uh I I
- 00:39:37always talk about the the boat party. Um
- 00:39:40it's it's definitely a highlight. You
- 00:39:42need to sign up for this. Right. Um it's
- 00:39:45it's basically a boat party. So you will
- 00:39:49be around like um I don't know 200
- 00:39:52people, 100 people from LSC on the boat
- 00:39:55and you will go along the whole times
- 00:39:58and then uh I mean amazing view, amazing
- 00:40:02people. You have music, a dance floor.
- 00:40:04So was definitely a highlight and it's
- 00:40:07if I remember correctly Friday night so
- 00:40:10it's actually the end of the week. So
- 00:40:12you can definitely spend some time
- 00:40:13there. Uh so that was one of the
- 00:40:15highlights but otherwise I would really
- 00:40:17recommend you to try to go to Oxford or
- 00:40:20Cambridge and and and see what's uh not
- 00:40:24only in London but also in in different
- 00:40:26cities and and culturally is also very
- 00:40:28interesting. Yeah. And I agree with you
- 00:40:31100%. The boat part is definitely a
- 00:40:33highlight especially when the the bridge
- 00:40:35opens. That's really beautiful. Yeah.
- 00:40:37Yeah. Yeah. Right. Definitely. And
- 00:40:39you're correct when it comes to the day
- 00:40:41trips going to Oxford and Cambridge.
- 00:40:42It's so beautiful when you go there. So
- 00:40:44different to London. So that's
- 00:40:45definitely a highlight. So one of my
- 00:40:48last questions for you, Ellie, got it
- 00:40:51right now. What top tips do you have
- 00:40:54managing
- 00:40:55for managing your budget while at summer
- 00:40:57school? This is very important.
- 00:41:00Uh so sorry, you mean managing my time
- 00:41:03timet wise? more managing what what um
- 00:41:07what do you think is a good idea in
- 00:41:09terms of what tips do you have for the
- 00:41:11students in terms of budgeting? I know
- 00:41:13Chloe mentioned about budgeting earlier
- 00:41:14but do you have anything that you want
- 00:41:16to add? Yeah, definitely important. I
- 00:41:19mean for me uh I mean from Switzerland,
- 00:41:22London was even a bit cheap but I can
- 00:41:25definitely have give you some tips uh
- 00:41:28for London. Uh I mean uh yeah concerning
- 00:41:31budgeting I I I would really recommend
- 00:41:33you to um at the end of the courses uh
- 00:41:36that means uh Bon you can just go with
- 00:41:39your friends one street away from the
- 00:41:42campus you have a a street with lots of
- 00:41:44restaurants pasta place very cheap as
- 00:41:47well. Um but otherwise go to the
- 00:41:49supermarkets and of course if you live
- 00:41:52next to Coven Garden or Soho I mean the
- 00:41:56it will be more expensive but but if you
- 00:41:58go a bit further definitely you will
- 00:42:01find something affordable and uh and
- 00:42:03thanks to the events um that are
- 00:42:06organized by LSC I mean you can
- 00:42:09definitely allocate part of your budget
- 00:42:11to these events and then I mean it's all
- 00:42:14right I think. Perfect. Thank you so
- 00:42:17much. That was very useful. Thank you so
- 00:42:19much, Ellie. So, now I'm gonna ask Alex.
- 00:42:27Hey, Alex. Good to see you again.
- 00:42:30Hi. So, Alex, I've got a couple of
- 00:42:33questions for you if that's okay. Okay.
- 00:42:35So, you mentioned going to Oxford,
- 00:42:37right? Someone asked, "What was your
- 00:42:39favorite place in central London?"
- 00:42:42My favorite place in central London? Hm.
- 00:42:46I don't know if would this be considered
- 00:42:48central to say burough market? That's
- 00:42:49probably not central, is it? Yeah, it
- 00:42:51is. It is still central. Okay. Central.
- 00:42:53It's still London. I'll go with it. So
- 00:42:55So if if for people maybe on the webinar
- 00:42:58who don't know what Burough Market is,
- 00:43:00um Burough Market is this massive
- 00:43:03outdoor like open air food market. Um
- 00:43:06and so basically it's very common for
- 00:43:08LSSE students to go do this. And I will
- 00:43:11say it's a little more on the touristy
- 00:43:13side, but that's okay. Remember you're
- 00:43:14tourists. you can do some of the
- 00:43:16touristy things. Um, but Burough Market
- 00:43:18is really really fun. Very to easy to
- 00:43:20get to via um via the tube. I lived in
- 00:43:24Hi Hobburn. Um, so I but I think almost
- 00:43:27every dorm it's like fairly easy to to
- 00:43:29get to a tube station and and get to
- 00:43:31Burough Market. Um, and then you
- 00:43:34basically spend the morning like
- 00:43:35exploring, trying all these different
- 00:43:37foods. Um, I highly recommend that you
- 00:43:41get the creme brulee donut. I can't
- 00:43:43remember the name, but you will find it.
- 00:43:45People are swarming. Um, so, but there's
- 00:43:48lots of lots of great things to try.
- 00:43:49Definitely arrive hungry because you
- 00:43:51will leave very full. But, uh, but then
- 00:43:54after that, I highly recommend just
- 00:43:55walking around kind of the Burough
- 00:43:57Market area. It's really pretty. There's
- 00:43:58lots of great views um and places to
- 00:44:01take pictures with friends and stuff
- 00:44:02over the water. So, I would definitely
- 00:44:04say um that that was probably my
- 00:44:06favorite little London spot. I recommend
- 00:44:08doing that on like a Saturday. I think
- 00:44:10it's only maybe open on Saturday
- 00:44:11mornings, but I I think that's when we
- 00:44:12went. So, wow, that's amazing. So, I
- 00:44:15hope everyone wrote that down. Burough
- 00:44:17market. Okay, you have to come. If
- 00:44:19you've seen on in Sorry, I'll just add
- 00:44:21one thing to that. If you've seen the
- 00:44:23viral videos on Instagram where there's
- 00:44:26those huge cups of like the most
- 00:44:28beautiful strawberries you've ever seen
- 00:44:29and then people like pouring the melted
- 00:44:31chocolate, that's at Burough Market. So,
- 00:44:34you can have all of your your
- 00:44:35chocolatecovered strawberry dreams come
- 00:44:37true.
- 00:44:39delicious. Honestly, which leads me to
- 00:44:42ask, what was your favorite food in
- 00:44:44London when you were here? My by far my
- 00:44:47favorite meal that I had was at I
- 00:44:51forgive me if I butcher the
- 00:44:52pronunciation, but I think it's called
- 00:44:53dash. Um, and it's yeah, it's an Indian
- 00:44:57restaurant in Covent Garden and it is
- 00:44:59the best Indian food I've ever had in my
- 00:45:01life. And I would not say I'm like a
- 00:45:03fanatic about Indian food usually, but
- 00:45:04it's incredible. Highly recommend you.
- 00:45:07They don't really do reservations, so
- 00:45:08you have to like go early and just kind
- 00:45:10of get in a queue, but it it really
- 00:45:11doesn't take long. It's very much worth
- 00:45:13it. I highly recommend grabbing a group
- 00:45:15of friends and doing that for dinner one
- 00:45:17night. Um maybe is like your last night
- 00:45:20in London or something, but um really
- 00:45:22really good food there. And then I think
- 00:45:24not a lot of people know about all the
- 00:45:27lunch recommend or like lunch options
- 00:45:29around campus cuz typically you'll have
- 00:45:31either you'll have your lecture and then
- 00:45:33you'll have lunch and then seminar or
- 00:45:34the opposite. And so, um, my friends and
- 00:45:37I found this place called Castner and
- 00:45:39Ovens, which, uh, is like maybe like a
- 00:45:4310-minute walk from LSC. It's really,
- 00:45:45really good. And it's all like
- 00:45:47home-cooked food, and you get to like
- 00:45:49pick different items and like it's like
- 00:45:52if your grandma or your mom had cooked
- 00:45:53you a really delicious meal. So, if
- 00:45:55you're craving some like more home
- 00:45:57cooking and not just like quick food, I
- 00:45:59would recommend Castner and Ovens.
- 00:46:02Amazing. if you could just write that
- 00:46:03down in the chat for us so we don't
- 00:46:05spell incorrectly. But honestly, Alex,
- 00:46:08Ellie, fantastic. Thank you so so much.
- 00:46:11And now I'm going to move on to the
- 00:46:14spark sessions. Fantastic. So with
- 00:46:18spark, this is our very own professional
- 00:46:21skills program. LSC we offer worldclass
- 00:46:25as mentioned before by Alex worldclass
- 00:46:28extracurricular activities as well to
- 00:46:30enhance your personal and professional
- 00:46:32development alongside your academic
- 00:46:35growth. Okay. There are many spark
- 00:46:37sessions you can attend during that week
- 00:46:40including events, panels and workshops.
- 00:46:42Gain insights from industry experts and
- 00:46:45internal LSE leaders. Okay. Spark
- 00:46:47sessions normally run during lunchtime
- 00:46:50or the evening. Some of the sessions
- 00:46:52we'll be running some of the sessions we
- 00:46:54will be running sorry are like CV
- 00:46:56workshops or postgraduate recruitment
- 00:46:59talks or dealing with anxiety literally
- 00:47:02so many sessions that we can literally
- 00:47:04that you can literally attend and it
- 00:47:07will literally help you enhance in your
- 00:47:08personal growth. So with that being
- 00:47:13said there are also new spark events
- 00:47:16also. So not just new social events but
- 00:47:18new spark events. And this one is quite
- 00:47:20it's quite interesting because um this
- 00:47:23one is improv workshop and it's an
- 00:47:25engaging interactive workshop to de
- 00:47:28develop key soft skills through improv
- 00:47:30based activities. This can help with
- 00:47:33building confidence in public speaking
- 00:47:36interviews and so much more. Just a
- 00:47:38workshop to help you come out your
- 00:47:39comfort zone and be more confident when
- 00:47:41you're in the working um world or even
- 00:47:43in the studying world. But ensure you
- 00:47:46register via Eventbrite. So when the um
- 00:47:49events do go live, you need to register
- 00:47:51via Eventbrite. The tickets go live
- 00:47:54again two weeks before the sessions and
- 00:47:57at 12:00 p.m. British time. So please
- 00:48:00remember again, we overs subscribe these
- 00:48:02events. So the minute you are done or
- 00:48:04your your um you just finished your
- 00:48:06course, you need to get there as soon as
- 00:48:08possible or if you can't attend, it
- 00:48:10would be great if you can just cancel
- 00:48:11your tickets so someone else can go.
- 00:48:14So moving on
- 00:48:17um you can also so basically the the
- 00:48:21best thing about this is when you attend
- 00:48:23two sessions you get a bronze badge. If
- 00:48:26you attend four you get silver and if
- 00:48:29you attend six you get gold badge. And
- 00:48:31with that being said these badges are
- 00:48:32micro accredititations which you can add
- 00:48:35to your CV or LinkedIn profile to
- 00:48:37highlight your dedication to
- 00:48:39professional skills development. I hope
- 00:48:42that made sense and if not, please do
- 00:48:44not hesitate to ask any questions on the
- 00:48:46chat. And with that, thank you so much.
- 00:48:49I am done. I'm passing it back to Chloe.
- 00:48:52Thank you, CeCe. And thanks so much for
- 00:48:55um every student ambassador who've been
- 00:48:57speaking about the authentic experience
- 00:48:58at summer school. I'm very sure that
- 00:49:00their advice will be come in very handy
- 00:49:03for all of you who are arriving for this
- 00:49:05year summer school. Before we jump onto
- 00:49:07the Q&A session, I would just want to
- 00:49:09quickly bring up a few reminders
- 00:49:11including on Unibody community. So since
- 00:49:14all of you here should have already
- 00:49:15received an offer, you should also
- 00:49:17receive an invite to join the Unibody
- 00:49:20community. So basically it's an app that
- 00:49:23you can get on to start joining in
- 00:49:25student group to get some peer to answer
- 00:49:27question and basically ask anything
- 00:49:29around. So we even got staff members
- 00:49:32monitoring from the back end in case if
- 00:49:34there are any um questions that we felt
- 00:49:37like answering could help with a wider
- 00:49:39audience. So really take advantage of
- 00:49:42this platform. Make sure that you join
- 00:49:43it in advance and start making
- 00:49:45connections and perhaps you can make
- 00:49:47friends in advance and um before you
- 00:49:50actually arrive for the course.
- 00:49:52The second thing I'd like to share here
- 00:49:54is more like a summarized uh checklist
- 00:49:57that includes all the key information we
- 00:49:59have just uh spoken through. So don't
- 00:50:02worry if you are not getting this
- 00:50:05screenshot in time because again this
- 00:50:07will be included in the student handbook
- 00:50:09that will be emailed to you closer to
- 00:50:12this start of the session. So don't
- 00:50:14worry about
- 00:50:16this. Um last but not least I'm sharing
- 00:50:19with you two QR codes. one of which
- 00:50:21would takes you to the frequently asked
- 00:50:24question web page on our website. So in
- 00:50:26a case if you are looking for answers
- 00:50:29during our out of office hours, you can
- 00:50:32definitely find most of your answers on
- 00:50:34our web page. Um you can also follow us
- 00:50:38on Instagram just because you can't um
- 00:50:41hear a lot from our past summer school
- 00:50:43alumine. We've got um student
- 00:50:46ambassadors take over and sometimes we
- 00:50:48collaborate them uh on a lot of blogs
- 00:50:51and also posters and during the program
- 00:50:54we'll also be posting a lot of like
- 00:50:55event reminders and updates here. So
- 00:50:58again it will become a very handy
- 00:51:00platform for you to stay tuned.
