  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

The hosts, Liz and Brian, discuss their life in New Zealand after moving from the UK 15 years ago. They acknowledge that while they love living in New Zealand, it is not perfect and share seven reasons why it might not be the right place for everyone. They emphasize that personal experiences vary and what works for them may not work for others.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

The first reason they mention is that New Zealand is not the same as other countries like the UK, USA, or South Africa. They highlight that despite English being the primary language, cultural differences exist, and newcomers should not expect it to be a replica of their home country. They stress the importance of understanding these differences before moving.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:15:00

The second reason is the significant culture shock that newcomers may experience. New Zealand has a unique history and culture, particularly with its Māori heritage, which differs greatly from the historical architecture and traditions found in Europe. They advise potential movers to consider whether they will miss the historical aspects of their home countries.

  • 00:15:00 - 00:20:00

The third reason is that New Zealand requires resilience and hard work. The hosts mention that the country was built on grit and determination, and those who expect an easy life may struggle. They emphasize the importance of having a strong work ethic and being prepared for challenges when moving to New Zealand.

  • 00:20:00 - 00:27:48

The fourth reason is that moving to New Zealand will not fix personal problems. They share anecdotes about couples who moved to New Zealand hoping to resolve issues in their relationships, only to find that the problems persisted. They advise addressing any underlying issues before making the move, as the transition can be stressful.

why New Zealand might not be for
  • 00:01:02
you yes we've been living here 15 years
  • 00:01:05
the reason we've never done this video
  • 00:01:07
is because my friend Jen from a thousand
  • 00:01:08
words did a fantastic video covering all
  • 00:01:11

  • 00:01:22
us we're Liz and Brian husband and wife
  • 00:01:23
when we moved from the UK 15 years ago
  • 00:01:26
to start a new life in New Zealand and
  • 00:01:28
we come on to YouTube and talk all about
  • 00:01:31
how wonderful usually New Zealand is and
  • 00:01:34
life in New Zealand and everything
  • 00:01:35
that's going on for us we have quite a
  • 00:01:39
few people contact us and say come on it
  • 00:01:42
can't be all that good well to us it is
  • 00:01:45
we love it yes but no you're right it
  • 00:01:49
isn't all that good and we thought we'd
  • 00:01:51
come on here to just warn you of seven
  • 00:01:54
reasons why New Zealand might not be the
  • 00:01:57
place for you yeah when you say it's not
  • 00:02:00
all that good do you mean like I'm going
  • 00:02:02
to give you seven it's not really that
  • 00:02:03
good you've been lying all this time no
  • 00:02:05
no no I'm going to give you seven we're
  • 00:02:08
talking about seven things do you know
  • 00:02:09
what what's good for us might not be
  • 00:02:12
good for you and I think that's the
  • 00:02:13
point when I say it's not good it's it
  • 00:02:16
might not be good for you which do you
  • 00:02:17
think is the most important the most
  • 00:02:20
important point that we're going to talk
  • 00:02:21
about in this show is number seven
  • 00:02:23
obviously because it's at the end of the
  • 00:02:24
show we don't want you to cck off don't
  • 00:02:26
    switch off
  • 00:02:27
yet but no seriously number seven is the
  • 00:02:31
most important one of all um but that's
  • 00:02:34
just a little teaser for you okay let's
  • 00:02:37
jump in let jump on him yeah so number
  • 00:02:39
one why New Zealand might not be for you
  • 00:02:42
and this one says it all actually we
  • 00:02:43
could just close the show here I think
  • 00:02:45
you could couldn't you because it
  • 00:02:46
encompasses everything that was a big
  • 00:02:48
word for the start of the show Encompass
  • 00:02:49
that focal Zone worked number one number
  • 00:02:51
one why it won't be for you it's not the
  • 00:02:54
same and it's not it's not the same it's
  • 00:02:57
not the same as South Africa it's not
  • 00:02:59
the same same as the USA it's not the
  • 00:03:01
same as Canada and it's not the same as
  • 00:03:02
the UK or Europe yeah it's not the same
  • 00:03:05
yeah the the thing is a lot of people
  • 00:03:07
think are straight off the butat well
  • 00:03:08
they they speak English you know the
  • 00:03:10
majority of the language is English you
  • 00:03:13
know and so you're going to come here
  • 00:03:15
and think okay straight off the bat
  • 00:03:17
you're going to get on because hey they
  • 00:03:19
just speak English it's same when I
  • 00:03:21
lived in the UK you'd meet Americans
  • 00:03:23
thinking oh they're going to be the same
  • 00:03:25
so you're going to have a laugh it's
  • 00:03:26
just like it is in the movies and you
  • 00:03:27
    meet them and you realize
  • 00:03:30
    you're completely different people you
  • 00:03:31
know what if you were moving from let's
  • 00:03:34
just say you were moving from England to
  • 00:03:36
France then yes it's going to be a
  • 00:03:38
    massive difference because you don't
  • 00:03:40
speak the language the French just eat
  • 00:03:42
food all the time they take massive long
  • 00:03:45
lunch breaks you know you know it's
  • 00:03:47
different but when you move to New
  • 00:03:49
Zealand just talking on a personal
  • 00:03:50
    experience here remember everything we
  • 00:03:52
say is our own personal experience so
  • 00:03:55
just be clear about that um we thought
  • 00:03:58
oh well they speak English like bri said
  • 00:04:00
they speak English they drive on the
  • 00:04:02
same side of the road as the UK the
  • 00:04:04
proper side of the road we know loads of
  • 00:04:06
people who went you know my sister lives
  • 00:04:08
there it's going to be it' just be like
  • 00:04:09
little England it'll just be fine it'll
  • 00:04:10
just be a different version of England
  • 00:04:12
and it really really couldn't be further
  • 00:04:14
from the TRU it really couldn't just a
  • 00:04:17
whole load of things that's what we're
  • 00:04:19
going to talk about in the other stuff
  • 00:04:20
but you know just from architecture to
  • 00:04:22
the road signs to just even the way a
  • 00:04:25
supermarkets set out and stuff it's
  • 00:04:27
getting it's it's getting similar but
  • 00:04:29
you know in the 15 years we' seen a lot
  • 00:04:31
of change to be similar that's why you
  • 00:04:33
that's the whole point that's why you
  • 00:04:34
wanted to do something different you
  • 00:04:35
know you've moved to New Zealand to move
  • 00:04:38
to New Zealand you're not moving to New
  • 00:04:40
Zealand so it reminds you of home it's
  • 00:04:42
as simple as that it's completely
  • 00:04:44
    different everything's different people
  • 00:04:46
are different yeah so talk about that
  • 00:04:48
number two reason why New Zealand might
  • 00:04:50
not be for you is because it's a bit of
  • 00:04:53
a culture shock in fact not a bit of a
  • 00:04:55
    culture shock it's a massive it's a huge
  • 00:04:58
culture and history that's it that's you
  • 00:05:01
that's the two things that make up
  • 00:05:03
culture is normally history and history
  • 00:05:05
    and
  • 00:05:06
culture yes yeah we've got the the mai
  • 00:05:09
culture which is is steeped in Tradition
  • 00:05:12
and everything else um but you know they
  • 00:05:15
tended to live in in in the bush and
  • 00:05:17
stuff and didn't have these huge towns
  • 00:05:19
and settlements like Medieval Europe I
  • 00:05:22
think if you're coming to New Zealand
  • 00:05:24
and you know we have got history here
  • 00:05:26
like Bryce said we've got the moldy
  • 00:05:27
history but we haven't got Castle we
  • 00:05:30
haven't got those little quaint streets
  • 00:05:32
that you can walk down we haven't got
  • 00:05:34
you know just that the Cobblestone room
  • 00:05:36
    you know the little fch
  • 00:05:38
rooms build it's just not here and some
  • 00:05:42
to some people including myself it's
  • 00:05:45
that was like a massive loss it was oh
  • 00:05:48
but what can I go and see what is there
  • 00:05:50
to dig my roots into we're going to talk
  • 00:05:52
about the roots and and tradeoffs later
  • 00:05:55
in the episode but yeah just be aware of
  • 00:05:58
that if you're a big history buff it is
  • 00:06:01
it's huge you know you can go to the
  • 00:06:03
South Island you go to omaru and you've
  • 00:06:06
got some really small street with some
  • 00:06:09
Georgian style buildings built in like a
  • 00:06:12
the white stone down there which is like
  • 00:06:13
a bath stone in the UK and it was like
  • 00:06:15
oh wow I didn't realize this was here
  • 00:06:17
dun Eden it's got a lot of history and
  • 00:06:19
culture in that side of the European
  • 00:06:21
side of stuff but you know New Zealand
  • 00:06:24
is a huge Melting Pot now of Asian
  • 00:06:28
European and American um uh culture
  • 00:06:32
isn't it you know so it's it's so
  • 00:06:35
diverse you can't put your finger on one
  • 00:06:37
point but it's not ancient cultur things
  • 00:06:39
if that's what you come in for and you
  • 00:06:41
go oh I'm going to miss that well stay
  • 00:06:43
you have to stay where you are if you're
  • 00:06:44
going to miss that I miss it but
  • 00:06:46
something to bear in mind the tradeoff
  • 00:06:49
is huge yes and we are going to talk
  • 00:06:51
about the trade-off in a minute so
  • 00:06:52
number three this this is a this is
  • 00:06:55
actually I wasn't going to say this one
  • 00:06:56
because I at first when I read this it
  • 00:06:59
was a comment someone wrote on our
  • 00:07:00
YouTube channel and when I read it I
  • 00:07:03
thought I got a bit oh shut you I was a
  • 00:07:05
bit offended like you know it's like no
  • 00:07:06
that's not true and then I read it again
  • 00:07:08
and I thought actually it's right and
  • 00:07:11
I'm going to mention it on this on this
  • 00:07:13
episode yeah so number three reason New
  • 00:07:17
Zealand might not be for you is don't
  • 00:07:19
come to New Zealand if you're soft and I
  • 00:07:22
don't want to do those air quotes
  • 00:07:24
because that's really annoying but I
  • 00:07:25
want to do that because I don't quite
  • 00:07:27
know what soft what this guy was
  • 00:07:29
implying when he said soft but I think I
  • 00:07:32
do know what it means when people say
  • 00:07:35
don't come to New Zealand if you're
  • 00:07:37
soft and before I jump in and let you
  • 00:07:40
talk I just want to just say my reason I
  • 00:07:43
think what you meant by that comment is
  • 00:07:46
New Zealand was built on Bloody hard
  • 00:07:50
work and toughness and just getting on
  • 00:07:53
with it and grit and yeah you know just
  • 00:07:56
it it it was it was a it was was built
  • 00:07:59
on on on on blood and sweat and tears
  • 00:08:02
and and sacrifices and all that thing
  • 00:08:07
and to come over here and be like oh
  • 00:08:10
just give it to me give it to me give it
  • 00:08:11
to me you know just just give me what I
  • 00:08:13
    want I'm privileged I'm I deserve this I
  • 00:08:16
no no that's not going to work for you
  • 00:08:19
it really isn't and I get what that
  • 00:08:21
comment meant now it does mean that it's
  • 00:08:23
I know it sounds a little bit offensive
  • 00:08:24
don't come here if you're soft but it
  • 00:08:26
doesn't mean that it just means you've
  • 00:08:28
got to be willing to put the work in you
  • 00:08:31
really have and and you have you've got
  • 00:08:32
to put it in because you know you can
  • 00:08:34
come you hear the word entitle these
  • 00:08:36
days like you know it's like well I'm
  • 00:08:37
this and I'm that and it's like you know
  • 00:08:39
I've got money it's not about that it's
  • 00:08:42
    not you know
  • 00:08:44
it's people do come down here you know
  • 00:08:46
the film stars they buy places down in
  • 00:08:48
um Central Taro and Queenstown and stuff
  • 00:08:51
like that because it's a little safe
  • 00:08:52
boat hole for them and stuff but they're
  • 00:08:55
few and far between but the majority of
  • 00:08:58
people that want to immigrate to New
  • 00:08:59
Zealand you've got to have a little bit
  • 00:09:01
of Pioneer in you haven't you you know
  • 00:09:04
you know you have because you know how
  • 00:09:06
hard it is to immigrate here that's the
  • 00:09:08
other thing it it isn't easy to get into
  • 00:09:10
New Zealand so hopefully you know this
  • 00:09:12
already because if you're willing to go
  • 00:09:13
through all that paperwork all that cost
  • 00:09:16
    all that wrenching heart-wrenching of
  • 00:09:18
leaving your family making those massive
  • 00:09:20
    decisions being slightly you're halfway
  • 00:09:22
    there you're halfway there because
  • 00:09:24
you're a toughy anyway yeah so but just
  • 00:09:26
remember that when you get here it
  • 00:09:28
doesn't end you still have to keep that
  • 00:09:31
fighting spirit and keep that strength
  • 00:09:33
going in you otherwise you you're going
  • 00:09:36
to find it a little bit and realize it's
  • 00:09:37
going to be tough at times yeah you know
  • 00:09:39
and that You' you've got to be resilient
  • 00:09:41
that's what that softness means is just
  • 00:09:42
being resilient and giving it what for
  • 00:09:45
you know give give as good as you get
  • 00:09:47
sort of thing you know and just don't
  • 00:09:48
think oh this is not for me I'm giving
  • 00:09:50
up number four of reasons why New
  • 00:09:52
Zealand might not be for you and again
  • 00:09:55
this is a bit of a sensitive one um it's
  • 00:09:57
not one of the ones that you normally
  • 00:09:59
here when you hear these kind of videos
  • 00:10:01
being made but I think it's an important
  • 00:10:03
one and I want we we discussed this
  • 00:10:05
earlier and Brian was like uh I don't
  • 00:10:07
know if you should say that but it's
  • 00:10:08
important and I think that you should
  • 00:10:09
    know it
  • 00:10:12
is if you have problems with let's just
  • 00:10:15
say you've got marriage problems or um
  • 00:10:19
you know there's something going on in
  • 00:10:21
your life that isn't right or you you
  • 00:10:24
you you think but but that by moving to
  • 00:10:26
New Zealand it will fix it
  • 00:10:30
from what we've seen with the people
  • 00:10:32
that we've known like we've known we
  • 00:10:34
know four couples who have moved to New
  • 00:10:36
    Zealand and got a
  • 00:10:37
    divorce
  • 00:10:39
um before I tell you what happened to
  • 00:10:41
those four couples that got divorced I
  • 00:10:42
just want to say that someone else said
  • 00:10:45
if you don't like bacon in your own
  • 00:10:47
country you're not going to like bacon
  • 00:10:48
in New Zealand and I thought that was
  • 00:10:50
probably a nicer way to say it a more
  • 00:10:52
gentler way to say it a way of saying
  • 00:10:54
that New Zealand isn't going to fix your
  • 00:10:57
problems you know it's not going to fix
  • 00:10:59
what's broken yeah it can it can make
  • 00:11:03
everything seem easier maybe when you're
  • 00:11:06
here well it's different you can use it
  • 00:11:08
as an excuse that oh if we move to New
  • 00:11:10
Zealand we're going to be happy we're
  • 00:11:12
going to be this we're going to have the
  • 00:11:13
same stress we won't have that some of
  • 00:11:15
those things yeah Will might might just
  • 00:11:16
work for you but sometimes you just got
  • 00:11:18
to talk to each other and go you know
  • 00:11:21
are we moving there because our
  • 00:11:22
relationship is not as strong as what we
  • 00:11:24
it should be and so you've got to fix
  • 00:11:27
that before you come because it's going
  • 00:11:29
to be hard for you when you come over uh
  • 00:11:32
just that initial shock of arriving in a
  • 00:11:34
    new country thinking I've sold
  • 00:11:36
everything and I'm here and so you're
  • 00:11:39
going to be under stress just those
  • 00:11:40
first few months that you're here you
  • 00:11:42
know even the first year is going to be
  • 00:11:43
tough I was going to say yeah it it does
  • 00:11:46
it it's going to take its toll it really
  • 00:11:48
does take its toll on your marriage let
  • 00:11:50
me tell you that you need that strong
  • 00:11:51
relationship is what you're saying yeah
  • 00:11:53
and we have got a strong relationship
  • 00:11:55
but we had some blazing blazing RS
  • 00:11:57
because you're just get here and all of
  • 00:12:00
a sudden you just feel like one goes off
  • 00:12:01
to work the other one doesn't know what
  • 00:12:02
to do and it's just anyway that's a
  • 00:12:04
whole different video but what I'm
  • 00:12:05
saying is just just be aware
  • 00:12:10
that the the things that are broken or
  • 00:12:12
you're not happy with where you are now
  • 00:12:14
aren't necessarily going to be fixed if
  • 00:12:16
you come to New Zealand I just want to
  • 00:12:18
State as well that the four couples that
  • 00:12:20
did the four couples that did divorce
  • 00:12:22
both all of them stayed in New Zealand
  • 00:12:25
and went on to have happy separate lives
  • 00:12:28
with new partners yeah so that was
  • 00:12:30
interesting but just it was just it
  • 00:12:33
wasn't right for them as a couple and I
  • 00:12:36
know that sounds really sad and I'm
  • 00:12:37
sorry if you are going through problems
  • 00:12:39
and you think oh moving to New Zealand
  • 00:12:41
we'll fix that um well just work on it
  • 00:12:43
now before you get here because it does
  • 00:12:46
get tough when you first get here but
  • 00:12:48
just yeah actually let me just tell you
  • 00:12:50
a story this will make you feel a bit
  • 00:12:51
better this is our this is our example
  • 00:12:53
of fixing something and it didn't so
  • 00:12:56
back in the UK Actually I don't even
  • 00:12:58
know I'm saying back in the UK because
  • 00:13:00
we're still like it and that's the point
  • 00:13:02
before we moved to New Zealand let's say
  • 00:13:04
that we were living in England just the
  • 00:13:08
    most sarcastic negative sort of
  • 00:13:12
like just anything typical Brit typic we
  • 00:13:15
are we are your typical Brit we love
  • 00:13:18
sarcasm um and we love like I'm dig at
  • 00:13:21
everyone else diing yeah exactly and you
  • 00:13:24
know with your family you're just always
  • 00:13:26
having a little bit of a nip and a bit
  • 00:13:27
of a sarcastic and anyway I remember
  • 00:13:29
sitting at the table we were about 6
  • 00:13:31
weeks out coming to New Zealand we were
  • 00:13:34
going to be leaving in about six weeks
  • 00:13:35
and we was sitting at our table in bath
  • 00:13:37
in England and I remember saying to you
  • 00:13:40
when we get to New Zealand the sarcasm
  • 00:13:42
stops I I hate sarcasm it's the lowest
  • 00:13:45
form of wit I don't like being sarcastic
  • 00:13:47
I'm going to be a new person and do you
  • 00:13:49
remember we I can remember saying that
  • 00:13:51
yeah and we were like yeah we will when
  • 00:13:53
we get there we'll just be really
  • 00:13:54
different I'll be different yeah yeah
  • 00:13:56
we're not we're just still us we're just
  • 00:13:59
living in New Zealand with sarcasm now I
  • 00:14:01
no one to talk to cuz you don't find it
  • 00:14:04
funny yeah so do you know it's just a
  • 00:14:07
little example of a reminder that like
  • 00:14:10
that guy said if you don't like the
  • 00:14:12
bacon in the if you're moaning about the
  • 00:14:13
bacon in this country you're going to
  • 00:14:14
moan about it in that country it follows
  • 00:14:16
you it comes with you and that same
  • 00:14:18
thing I had a guy once said to me what
  • 00:14:20
are you move to New Zealand for it's no
  • 00:14:22
different over there than what it is
  • 00:14:23
here you know if you're looking for
  • 00:14:25
happiness you can find it here and it
  • 00:14:27
was like No it's it's that's not what
  • 00:14:29
we're doing we're doing it for an
  • 00:14:30
    adventure yeah that's that's a whole
  • 00:14:32
different thing that is yeah this is
  • 00:14:34
just for things that are broken yeah all
  • 00:14:37

those videos with you okay let's get
  • 00:15:35
    back on with the
  • 00:15:37
show okay so welcome back number five of
  • 00:15:40
the reasons why New Zealand might not be
  • 00:15:43
    for
  • 00:15:44
    you it's the
  • 00:15:46
tradeoff you can't get Amazon Prime for
  • 00:15:49
a start let's use that for an example
  • 00:15:51
    well that's that's a big thing people
  • 00:15:52
you know you're in the UK you've got
  • 00:15:54
Amazon Prime you can get deliveries the
  • 00:15:56
same day you can get it within a few
  • 00:15:58
hours sometimes the next day guaranteed
  • 00:16:00
do you know yeah what it would be
  • 00:16:02
sometimes cuz you see you see the stuff
  • 00:16:03
on Amazon there's everything isn't there
  • 00:16:05
everything now here it just doesn't
  • 00:16:08
really there's no Amazon there's Amazon
  • 00:16:10
Prime you can watch videos that's about
  • 00:16:12
it like you know and you can get
  • 00:16:15
shipped from the likes of the
  • 00:16:18
USA sh from USA do you know it's easier
  • 00:16:20
to ship from the USA than what it is
  • 00:16:22
    from Australia everyone think oh
  • 00:16:23
shipping from Australia be a piece of
  • 00:16:25
cake nobody wants to deliver to New
  • 00:16:26
Zealand in Australia very very you get
  • 00:16:29
stuff shipped we're having problems at
  • 00:16:31
with our olive oil yeah it takes so long
  • 00:16:33
but I can get it shipped within a week
  • 00:16:35
from the USA but hey you've got to pay
  • 00:16:37
for shipping yeah you know even if you
  • 00:16:39
got Amazon Prime you know yes you can do
  • 00:16:41
it and there's are ways of getting
  • 00:16:42
around it but it's about how quick
  • 00:16:44
you're going to get it so that is a big
  • 00:16:46
trade-off it the shops are the same they
  • 00:16:48
might not have the thing in stock so
  • 00:16:50
it's always hit and miss you got to
  • 00:16:51
check each time before you go somewhere
  • 00:16:53
have they got it in stock when we first
  • 00:16:55
came here they didn't have the same
  • 00:16:56
online stuff as what we have now T up at
  • 00:16:59
the shop and there it's gone there's
  • 00:17:00
nothing there you know that you that you
  • 00:17:02
need and that's a big big thing if you
  • 00:17:06
    want something
  • 00:17:07
now then don't think think about it that
  • 00:17:10
when you get here you're going to have
  • 00:17:12
to wait you know you might have to wait
  • 00:17:14
a week or two weeks it might have to
  • 00:17:15
come from AliExpress in China because
  • 00:17:18
you know I'm not paying $500 for that
  • 00:17:20
one I can get it from $100 from there
  • 00:17:21
it's the same thing yeah you know so
  • 00:17:25
just be aware that when you come here
  • 00:17:27
it's an island in the Pacific in the
  • 00:17:30
    Southern Pacific away from everywhere
  • 00:17:32
yeah so it it is here you just have to
  • 00:17:36
search it or you have to wa well Amazon
  • 00:17:38
Prime isn't here Amazon Prime is not
  • 00:17:40
here yeah if you want things now now now
  • 00:17:42
then again you and you know I'm talking
  • 00:17:44
to you like this and I I I'm I'm aware
  • 00:17:46
that if you're in our community if
  • 00:17:48
you're in our private ends ahead
  • 00:17:49
community on our slack group you know
  • 00:17:51
all this because we tell you you've got
  • 00:17:53
    millions of channels and everyone's
  • 00:17:55
talking and everyone tells you this
  • 00:17:57
    stuff um but
  • 00:17:59
again do your research you know if
  • 00:18:02
you're not in our community and you are
  • 00:18:04
moving to New Zealand do your research
  • 00:18:06
because you don't want to be getting
  • 00:18:08
over here and thinking hang on a minute
  • 00:18:10
are you joking on you I can't order that
  • 00:18:12
and have it tomorrow what's that all
  • 00:18:14
about just do your research before you
  • 00:18:15
come and before we move on from this
  • 00:18:17
subject as well this this this one I
  • 00:18:20
    just want to say
  • 00:18:22
that again New Zealand offers massive
  • 00:18:27
tradeoffs for this sort of thing okay no
  • 00:18:29
you're not going to be able to get your
  • 00:18:32
Amazon Prime no you're not going to be
  • 00:18:34
able to get Uber flipping eats and get
  • 00:18:39
but I'm just saying we can't here where
  • 00:18:41
we live can't get it but you know what
  • 00:18:44
we get to walk in the bush we get to go
  • 00:18:46
to Rainforest we get to look at the sky
  • 00:18:48
and see all the light all the St get
  • 00:18:50
your yeah you've just there is so bigger
  • 00:18:54
    a
  • 00:18:55
tradeoff than being able to just order
  • 00:18:57
stuff off Amazon and have it here the
  • 00:18:59
next day you've got to realize that
  • 00:19:02
before you come to New Zealand and
  • 00:19:03
you've got to want that so much because
  • 00:19:06
when you know that that's what you're
  • 00:19:08
going to get you don't care about the
  • 00:19:10
Amazon stuff it's like yeah it's a bit
  • 00:19:12
of an inconvenience but there's a
  • 00:19:14
massive tradeoff it's just so much
  • 00:19:16
better it's a huge tradeoff okay number
  • 00:19:20
six of reasons why you New Zealand might
  • 00:19:23
not be for you and this is no secret at
  • 00:19:25
all it's isolated we're long way from
  • 00:19:29
everywhere else in the world yes and
  • 00:19:32
that's what we were say personally
  • 00:19:33
that's why we moved here there you
  • 00:19:36
go moving on yeah that's say yeah
  • 00:19:41
but but that's true isn't it like you
  • 00:19:43
know and does that go back to because I
  • 00:19:45
was uh that comes back to the time
  • 00:19:47
difference the time difference it's huge
  • 00:19:49
isn't it seriously yeah that that is
  • 00:19:52
it's um not so much for the US the parts
  • 00:19:54
of the US like California is not too bad
  • 00:19:57
because you know I was is uh Sun Sunny
  • 00:19:59
is in Las Las Vegas at the moment and I
  • 00:20:02
was talking to him at midday and it was
  • 00:20:04
what 5:00 in the afternoon so that's
  • 00:20:06
kind of okay because you're still on the
  • 00:20:07
same they're a day behind but it feels
  • 00:20:09
like you're in the same day yeah you
  • 00:20:11
know um because it doesn't really matter
  • 00:20:13
what date it is but the UK it's morning
  • 00:20:15
night morning night and it's nothing in
  • 00:20:17
between just be aware of that UK and
  • 00:20:19
    Europe it's it's it's it's hard it
  • 00:20:23
really is hard and you've got to be
  • 00:20:24
aware of it especially if you're going
  • 00:20:26
through tough times and you want your
  • 00:20:27
family and you want some reassurance and
  • 00:20:30
you're phoning them up in the morning
  • 00:20:31
and they're just about to go to bed or
  • 00:20:33
vice versa it's flipping tough it really
  • 00:20:36
is but you will know that before you
  • 00:20:38
come here but just be aware of it that
  • 00:20:41
it's time difference can be hard
  • 00:20:43
especially in the likes of Central
  • 00:20:45
Europe that can be pretty tough like you
  • 00:20:47
know it's like the morning there's no
  • 00:20:49
chance it's so it's just yeah it's just
  • 00:20:52
hard and you've got to be aware of that
  • 00:20:53
like you know right number seven and the
  • 00:20:56
final one and this is one we promised
  • 00:20:58
you and this this I think is probably
  • 00:21:00
the most important one or or one of the
  • 00:21:03
    most important
  • 00:21:04
ones number seven reasons why New
  • 00:21:08
Zealand might not be for you is if
  • 00:21:10
status is important to you if you're one
  • 00:21:13
of these people that like to be
  • 00:21:15
recognized as the big boss and I've got
  • 00:21:17
this and I've got this fancy this and
  • 00:21:19
I've got that and my job is this New
  • 00:21:21
Zealand might not be the place for you y
  • 00:21:24
it's yes I mean some people um yeah they
  • 00:21:28
might have like a big ego where it's
  • 00:21:30
like I've worked hard for this and you
  • 00:21:32
know uh this is this is my status in
  • 00:21:35
life and I've I've done the last 10
  • 00:21:36
years doing this to get to this point
  • 00:21:39
and you're going to come to New Zealand
  • 00:21:40
and they're going to not so much knock
  • 00:21:42
you back but you're going to have to
  • 00:21:44
start Yes again at a lower a lower point
  • 00:21:46
it you might get taken on at the same
  • 00:21:48
but even it it won't be quite the same
  • 00:21:50
as what you were over there even coming
  • 00:21:52
over to trady you know I was a
  • 00:21:55
    electrician Plumber Heating gas uh
  • 00:21:58
certified in the UK for all of that
  • 00:22:00
stuff come here nothing I couldn't
  • 00:22:03
transfer my qualifications over here I
  • 00:22:06
still had to go and take exams and do
  • 00:22:08
things again and work my way it took me
  • 00:22:10
three years just to get back to being
  • 00:22:12
certified again you know so three years
  • 00:22:14
of hard work you know from everything
  • 00:22:16
and it's the same I know Pilots that
  • 00:22:19
have come over here you know
  • 00:22:21
captains and they come to get a job here
  • 00:22:24
in New Zealand it's like well you're
  • 00:22:26
going to go back to um flying propeller
  • 00:22:28
    planes
  • 00:22:29
you know distance and You' got to work
  • 00:22:31
your way back up and they just like no I
  • 00:22:33
can't do it yeah that's exactly right
  • 00:22:36
and I think I think like you say if you
  • 00:22:37
    haven't watched Brian's video of being a
  • 00:22:39
plumber in New Zealand he went from
  • 00:22:41
owning his own company you know
  • 00:22:43
employing people to come in over here
  • 00:22:46
jumping in septic tanks and cleaning out
  • 00:22:48
poo basically it and putting drains and
  • 00:22:50
digging ditches and stuff if you want to
  • 00:22:52
live here and you want to if that's
  • 00:22:54
what's important to you then that goes
  • 00:22:57
back to what we were saying earlier in
  • 00:22:58
the show you have to be prepared to go
  • 00:23:01
back to starting at the bottom yeah and
  • 00:23:03
like you said you know we've got you
  • 00:23:04
know the friend with the pilot he's just
  • 00:23:06
not willing to do it it's like no I'm
  • 00:23:08
not and I understand that I don't blame
  • 00:23:10
him to a degree you know if I'm earning
  • 00:23:12
so much more money over here but that's
  • 00:23:14
the tradeoff again it comes back to
  • 00:23:17
tradeoff doesn't it like you know it's a
  • 00:23:19
lifestyle it's you know the majority of
  • 00:23:22
New Zealand you're not going to be
  • 00:23:24
sitting for hours like hundreds of hours
  • 00:23:26
a year in your car waiting to get
  • 00:23:28
somewhere yeah cuz there just isn't the
  • 00:23:30
people here you know yeah and you know
  • 00:23:33
again going back to that thing of like
  • 00:23:35
if you're if you're the boss if you're
  • 00:23:37
the head of the company and I don't want
  • 00:23:39
you to think that oh I can't come to New
  • 00:23:40
Zealand and get ahead because yeah there
  • 00:23:42
    are thousands of
  • 00:23:45
    people plent of millionaires and
  • 00:23:47
billionaires in New Zealand you know
  • 00:23:48
lots of people make money yeah and and
  • 00:23:51
vice versa and again this is a this is
  • 00:23:53
us talking personally if you don't know
  • 00:23:55
us and you don't know our history we
  • 00:23:57
came from Bass in England which is a
  • 00:23:59
very affluent wealthy area where status
  • 00:24:02
matters you know like it matters what
  • 00:24:04
your postcode is it matters where your
  • 00:24:06
child goes to school it matters how you
  • 00:24:08
pronounce certain words it mattered and
  • 00:24:11
coming over here was a bloody breath of
  • 00:24:14
fresh air I tell you because it was just
  • 00:24:17
like oh thank God people just love you
  • 00:24:19
for who you are they want to know you
  • 00:24:22
for who you are they don't care whether
  • 00:24:24
you're the head of the company or if
  • 00:24:25
    you're driving a Rolls-Royce they don't
  • 00:24:27
care about that it's just like who are
  • 00:24:28
you what's your family what what do you
  • 00:24:30
love to do what what's your core and
  • 00:24:34
that is is what New Zealand is so like I
  • 00:24:37
say if if you are one of those people
  • 00:24:39
that like wait till they hear about this
  • 00:24:41
and wait till you hear about how much I
  • 00:24:42
made last year uh they don't care you
  • 00:24:46
know don't worry about it because it's
  • 00:24:48
not going to matter so yeah no I mean
  • 00:24:51
things have changed in 15 years you know
  • 00:24:52
what when I came over as a skilled
  • 00:24:54
migrant you could work for minimum wage
  • 00:24:57
and they would still let you in the
  • 00:24:58
country now with the immigration rules
  • 00:25:00
and things like that it's changed so you
  • 00:25:02
know I can't remember what it is but
  • 00:25:05
it's over $770,000 or something like
  • 00:25:07
that as a Skool migrant you've got to be
  • 00:25:09
you've got to be earning that sort of
  • 00:25:10
money you know so the company's got to
  • 00:25:13
has got to be giving you a lot more than
  • 00:25:15
minimum wage and that's that's one of
  • 00:25:18
    that's what's changed hasn't it in the
  • 00:25:19
last few years like you know so there
  • 00:25:21
they are there are our seven points of
  • 00:25:23
why New Zealand might not be for you and
  • 00:25:25
we say this with all the love in our
  • 00:25:27
heart to you yes you know we would never
  • 00:25:29
    want to discourage
  • 00:25:33
or dampen anyone's dreams never ever but
  • 00:25:37
at the same time like you were about to
  • 00:25:39
say we wouldn't be doing our job if we
  • 00:25:41
were sitting here saying oh yeah
  • 00:25:42
    everything's wonderful everything's
  • 00:25:44
brilliant your life is going to be
  • 00:25:45
amazing when you get to New Zealand just
  • 00:25:47
bear in mind those seven things we just
  • 00:25:49
told you and let me tell you this you

  • 00:26:12

  • 00:26:17

  • 00:26:19

  • 00:26:21
