00:00:06
How many of you all have ever
had a one hour lay over?
00:00:14
So during this one hour layover, it's
hard to sit down and get a formal mail.
00:00:19
It's hard to pull out your
computer to doing work.
00:00:23
It's hard to take a nap.
00:00:24
So what do most people turn to?
00:00:27
Social media.
00:00:29
So this is exactly what Justine did during
her lay over from London to South Africa.
00:00:35
She turned to social
media to entertain he.
00:00:38
First she tweeted about the guy in
first class who decided not to worry
00:00:42
a deodorant.
00:00:43
Highlighting they do not have enough money
to buy deodorant, she got no responses.
00:00:49
Next, she tweeted about
the cucumber sandwich and
00:00:52
how cold it was for
her sensitive teeth, no responses.
00:00:58
So she took to social media one more time.
00:01:00
With her 170 followers, she tweeted
going to Africa hope I don't get AIDS.
00:01:08
Just kidding, I'm white.
00:01:10
She had 30 minutes left of her lay over,
she sporadically chat and no responses.
00:01:16
She wasn't too surprised given the fact
that she only had 170 followers.
00:01:21
She boarded her plane for
her 11 hour flight to South Africa.
00:01:24
And when she landed,
things were drastically different.
00:01:29
She landed to people tweeting
about the fact that,
00:01:33
this would be bad when she lands.
00:01:35
She landed to people tweeting about,
you're getting fired.
00:01:39
She landed to people
tweeting even companies
00:01:42
about using this as marketing materials.
00:01:44
Next time you get on a plane,
make sure that you have Gogo Wi Fi.
00:01:48
So you can check social media more often.
00:01:51
Justine was a Senior Director
of Corporate Communications.
00:01:56
So you all may be thinking this can't
happen to you, but it happened to her.
00:02:02
This is showing over time how
Justine was searched on Google.
00:02:06
Overnight her life was changed and
she was fired from her dream job.
00:02:12
So today we're going to talk to you
about how one post can impact your life,
00:02:17
how one post can ruin your life,
how one post can make your life.
00:02:21
And first of course we are going to talk
about how one post can impact your life.
00:02:25
>> So what do we actually mean by
one post can impact your life and
00:02:28
why should you care go
into the workplace?.
00:02:31
We're going to go through a few
stats from a Career Builder survey
00:02:34
of over 2,000 current active
hiring managers in the US.
00:02:38
So to kick us off,
more than half of hiring managers
00:02:42
have found social media red flags as
a reason to not extend you a job offer.
00:02:47
So are you focusing on your resume, your
cover letter, maybe that elusive personal
00:02:51
recommendation, maybe your social
media is hiding in the background and
00:02:55
putting you in some hot water.
00:02:58
Let's say you make it through that
gauntlet, you've dodged all the bullets,
00:03:01
you've got the job, congratulations.
00:03:03
Are you safe?
00:03:04
Afraid not.
00:03:05
Again, more than half of firms are using
social media to research current
00:03:10
employees.
00:03:11
But what does that actually mean?
00:03:12
Well, social media can take many forms.
00:03:15
It's a pretty loose term.
00:03:17
You may be thinking of your Instagram,
your Facebook,
00:03:19
of course, but think more than
medium blog post you liked.
00:03:22
That comment you made on a podcast or
your LinkedIn profile.
00:03:26
Social media can take many forms,
and they can all affect you.
00:03:30
But again, maybe you're thinking so
what, my job's 9:00 to 5:00,
00:03:33
it doesn't matter what I'm doing
at the weekend, what I'm posting.
00:03:36
Surely it's a free country.
00:03:38
Well true, but more than a third
of employers have disciplined or
00:03:43
fired someone because of
current social media activity.
00:03:46
And these are not big
celebrity showcase moments.
00:03:49
These are everyday people
doing everyday things, but
00:03:52
you may be shocked that
I've got them in trouble.
00:03:54
And Chimel walk you through some examples.
00:03:57
So you may be thinking now honestly Chris,
I don't even like social media.
00:04:00
Should I just delete everything?
00:04:03
It's a nice idea.
00:04:05
But unfortunately,
the worst number of all is 57% of firm's
00:04:09
actually find it worse
if you're invisible.
00:04:12
>> [LAUGH]
>> I know, so what should do?
00:04:16
Well, honestly before we
get to the solutions,
00:04:18
right now just think these
are not small numbers.
00:04:21
Clearly your current employers, potential
employers are very well vast in social
00:04:26
media, and they suddenly use it to
evaluate you in the hiring process,
00:04:30
in your current reviews, and
you could even be fight for it.
00:04:34
So right now Chin is going to walk us
through some examples of how one post can
00:04:38
truly ruin your career.
00:04:44
>> Now you maybe wondering, okay, so
I have to maintain a social media presence
00:04:48
so that I'm not invisible,
but this is just so risky.
00:04:53
What are some of the reflects
that I should avoid?
00:04:56
I don't want to end up as one
of the 34% who got fired or
00:04:59
who got disciplined because
of some social media effects.
00:05:02
What are the things that
I should look out for?
00:05:06
So here I'm going to give you two real
life examples that will hopefully set you
00:05:10
thinking.
00:05:13
Here is an example of a picture posted by
a social media user that got her fired.
00:05:17
Can anyone guess why?
00:05:24
>> Drinking?
00:05:26
>> Right, okay, so
there's actually no breaking of the law.
00:05:29
There's nothing clearly out of place
except for this little detail over here.
00:05:36
So the social media user had been to a
cocktail party celebrating the closure of
00:05:40
a major deal with a new client.
00:05:42
The cocktail party was being held at
the premises of the new client, and
00:05:45
that's its logo you can see all there.
00:05:48
And then she posted
a picture on social media.
00:05:51
But she posted it before the deal
was meant to be announced.
00:05:55
>> Mm-hm.
>> In so doing,
00:05:57
she breached confidentiality clauses and
she got fired as a result.
00:06:03
The big takeaway here is that you've got
to be hyper aware of everything that
00:06:06
you're posting, check and
recheck your post.
00:06:10
Especially pictures, make sure that
everything in the foreground and
00:06:13
the background are all appropriate
before you hit that post button.
00:06:20
Next example.
00:06:22
This is Sheriff B J Roberts from Hampton,
Virginia.
00:06:25
In 2009,
he fired a man named Bobby Bland and
00:06:28
four of his co workers from
the sheriff's department.
00:06:31
Why?
00:06:32
Because in 2009,
when he was running for re-election,
00:06:36
the five of them went to like
the Facebook page of this major, Mr.
00:06:40
Jim Davis, who was his main rival
during the election campaign.
00:06:47
So it turns out Mr.
00:06:48
Roberts won the election and
he promptly fired the five of them.
00:06:51
Citing budgetary constraints,
dissatisfaction with performance, and
00:06:55
a general lack of harmony and
efficiency in the sheriff's department.
00:06:58
>> [LAUGH]
>> So
00:07:01
while you may not agree with what Mr.
Roberts has done,
00:07:03
the bigger takeaway here is that you
make statements with your likes.
00:07:08
In the social media space any activity
that you perform can and will be construed
00:07:12
as your personal statements of position
and they can affect your career.
00:07:18
So if your company or
your prospective company are cautious,
00:07:22
they are likely to have drawn up
detailed social media guidelines
00:07:25
to tell you to tell employees what they
should or should not do on social media.
00:07:29
So be sure to look up those guidelines and
whether your company has them.
00:07:33
And above all, remember that you
make statements with your likes.
00:07:38
But it is not all gloom and doom.
00:07:39
I will now hand over to Haley who will
talk about how one post can also make your
00:07:43
career.
00:07:47
>> So I will also share two examples
of how a post can make your career.
00:07:51
How many people know who this is?
00:07:55
Yet not many people know that he
was discovered on social media.
00:08:02
In 2007 Justin Bieber took and
00:08:05
shared one of his covers to
another artist on YouTube.
00:08:09
His manager was scrolling through
YouTube looking at different videos and
00:08:14
came across this video.
00:08:17
He was so impressed with Justin's voice.
00:08:21
He spent the rest of the day going through
the rest of the content that Justin had
00:08:24
shared on YouTube and fell in love.
00:08:28
He quickly set up a meeting between
Justin Bieber and Usher, and
00:08:32
the rest was history.
00:08:34
This is the highlight the fact that
sharing your interest and your passions on
00:08:38
social media can help make a career
that you're not even trying to have yet.
00:08:43
You never know who your audience is, and
00:08:45
who's out there looking for
a new opportunity for you.
00:08:50
However, if you are thinking, I don't have
any artistic talent or something that
00:08:54
I can showcase on social media, there
is other ways to also make your career.
00:08:58
Suzanne had follow a VP of a large
company multiple years ago.
00:09:04
She started liking some of
the posts that he made,
00:09:07
responding to his interactions, really
interesting and like his company and
00:09:11
the strategies that he
was putting in place.
00:09:15
This one tweet set her off on
a completely new trajectory.
00:09:20
He had just mentioned the fact
that he had started yamming,
00:09:23
yammering on a social media platform.
00:09:25
However, while everyone else was praising
the fact of him taking this new step,
00:09:30
she made the interesting comment of, she's
tried this before and not everyone yams.
00:09:35
He was interested in how honest she was,
and
00:09:38
started to look more into her background.
00:09:40
He looked through her social media,
tweets, and
00:09:43
saw that she was really good at
bringing community together.
00:09:48
He offered her a job as Director
of Community Engagement,
00:09:51
and the rest was history.
00:09:54
This highlights that even if it's not
content that you're creating, but
00:09:57
just responding to other people's
content that you're passionate about
00:10:01
can highlight opportunities
to get involved in a career
00:10:03
that you otherwise would
not have dreamed of.
00:10:06
So now Chris is going to
highlight some of the takeaways.
00:10:12
>> So as Haley and
Chin pass out our handout,
00:10:14
if we should see five key takeaways
as long as a social media checklist,
00:10:18
which will encourage you to use
this thanksgiving to scrub.
00:10:21
>> [LAUGH]
>> So
00:10:23
make sure everything online is
relevant how you want to be seen.
00:10:26
But the key takeaways, one, have a social
media presence, as we've discussed,
00:10:31
being invisible is not a solution here.
00:10:33
Two, be hyper-aware of everything you
post even the smallest background detail
00:10:38
can really make a break.
00:10:41
Number three, you really make
statements with your likes.
00:10:45
It's important to be intentional about
everything you like and share online.
00:10:49
Number four, post content that
really showcases your talent.
00:10:53
You'd be surprised how
far this can take you.
00:10:55
And number five, simply strike up
conversations about your interests.
00:10:59
You really have no idea
where they can lead to.
00:11:02
So remember,
one post can impact your career,
00:11:04
one post could make your career and
one post can ruin your career.
00:11:08
We're now open for questions.
00:11:09
