- 00:00:44I felt like I was forced in a corner and

- 00:00:48is a very cryy episode. If every

- 00:00:54some of these brands not sell very well,
- 00:00:57they also made the influencers feel like
- 00:00:59a sellout. But not for Sarah Chan. Be

- 00:02:01does Statue of Beauty grow to sell one
- 00:02:02lip liner every 12 seconds? How to build
- 00:02:05a real following rather than just a
- 00:02:08vanity metric? And most importantly, how
- 00:02:10can you, just like Sarah, build one of
- 00:02:12the most quietly successful brands
- 00:02:14without a PR machine that made $40
- 00:02:17million in sales last year and is

- 00:02:22Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 00:02:29Billy Eyish were your lip liner.
- 00:02:31I know.
- 00:02:32How do you feel?
- 00:02:33Uh, it was insane. None of us knew that
- 00:02:36she bought the lip liner. Like
- 00:02:38none of you knew.
- 00:02:39No, no, we didn't send it to her. We
- 00:02:41just found out through TikTok in real
- 00:02:43time with everyone that she was using
- 00:02:45our lip liner stain. And what's
- 00:02:47incredible is she never posts beauty
- 00:02:49content. She never posts makeup
- 00:02:51tutorials.
- 00:02:51I know. It's like the first time she
- 00:02:53drops her entire beauty routine. It's
- 00:02:55your lip liner.
- 00:02:57Oh my god.
- 00:03:00And it almost like makes a bigger impact
- 00:03:03because she never posted. And the fact
- 00:03:05that she posts the application, the
- 00:03:07finished look, and then her going to
- 00:03:09concert and then ending the concert and
- 00:03:12then she still had the lip liner on,
- 00:03:14that was insane. So
- 00:03:16that's the best ad ever.
- 00:03:18I know. I know. It It's It's so
- 00:03:21incredible. And yeah, we feel really
- 00:03:23lucky that she like all the Tik Tok
- 00:03:25girls love our lip liners, too.
- 00:03:26Got Beaut's lip liner stain. So good.
- 00:03:30Oh, this is so satisfying.
- 00:03:32That's amazing. Yeah. Wow. I'm sure it
- 00:03:35was like a huge shocking moment. Kind of
- 00:03:38like a pinch me moment, right?
- 00:03:39Oh, yeah.
- 00:03:40I am still in complete shock.
- 00:03:41It was my manager who sent me the TikTok
- 00:03:44and she was like, "Holy shit." And I
- 00:03:46sent it to everyone on our team like a
- 00:03:49couple minutes after it was posted and
- 00:03:51everyone just freaked out. It was 2 days
- 00:03:53before Christmas and the search volume
- 00:03:56for Sachu lip liner went up I think 75%.
- 00:04:00Our wow
- 00:04:02orders were just flowing in. We ranked
- 00:04:04way up on Amazon because of her impact.
- 00:04:08Insane. But also because you have such a
- 00:04:10good product, it just like naturally and
- 00:04:12organically made it to the people who
- 00:04:15have the highest level of influence.
- 00:04:17Yeah. Yeah. I I mean I I feel really
- 00:04:19lucky that people notice it cuz
- 00:04:21sometimes you think that you made a
- 00:04:23really really great product and it
- 00:04:25doesn't get the hype that you maybe at
- 00:04:27least I personally sometimes feel
- 00:04:29certain products deserve. But yeah, it's
- 00:04:32incredible that she loves it and it's
- 00:04:33incredible that so many people on TikTok
- 00:04:35love it. And I feel this on a deeper
- 00:04:37level from a content creation side. You
- 00:04:40could probably resonate. It's like this
- 00:04:41is a banger and not many people get to
- 00:04:44discover it.
- 00:04:45Yeah. What do you think is very
- 00:04:47underrated at Satch Beauty right now?
- 00:04:49Well, a lot of our skin care actually.
- 00:04:51Um, a couple years ago, we had a whole
- 00:04:54skincare line with a moisturizer, a spot
- 00:04:57eraser. We wanted to create a
- 00:05:00fragrance-free skincare routine that's
- 00:05:02focused on minimizing irritation because
- 00:05:05that was kind of what was happening on
- 00:05:06the market. Everyone's coming out with
- 00:05:08the highest strength retinols and BHA.
- 00:05:10And we wanted to create a skincare line
- 00:05:12that's good for sensitive skin,
- 00:05:13especially for people who wear makeup
- 00:05:15all the time, which is the majority of
- 00:05:16women who have to wear makeup to go to
- 00:05:18work. So, right,
- 00:05:19I I was very proud of our skincare line,
- 00:05:22but I think because we were so new as a
- 00:05:24brand, and we didn't know exactly how to
- 00:05:28put a marketing angle to go alongside
- 00:05:30the good product. So, I don't think it
- 00:05:32did as well as I hoped it would,
- 00:05:35but it was a learning lesson for us. And
- 00:05:38the lip liner stain launch was a
- 00:05:40complete 180 from that. So, you know,
- 00:05:42you really need to focus on the product.
- 00:05:44That's always my top priority. Focus on
- 00:05:46the product, but the marketing of it all
- 00:05:49is actually also important.
- 00:05:51Huge. I'm sure there are so many
- 00:05:53lessons. We'll love to get into that,
- 00:05:55but before then, I would love to just
- 00:05:57like share some really impressive stats.
- 00:06:00I'm sure like
- 00:06:01everybody knows this already, but for
- 00:06:04those who don't, it's a huge win and I
- 00:06:07think it's so welld deserved. It's so
- 00:06:09welld deserved. So, Statue of Beauty
- 00:06:10made $40 million in sales last year and
- 00:06:13is projected to reach 100 million in 2
- 00:06:17years.
- 00:06:18And did you guys know that they sell one
- 00:06:21lip liner every 12 seconds?
- 00:06:24Mhm.
- 00:06:24That is crazy.
- 00:06:25I know.
- 00:06:26That is crazy. Yeah, I didn't know that
- 00:06:28many lips are like needing lip liners,
- 00:06:30but you never know the demand. Which is
- 00:06:32why if you don't try, you'll never find
- 00:06:34out. Just like how Sarah took a leap of
- 00:06:36faith and began Satch Beauty on Shopify
- 00:06:39in 2020. How Gym Shark, Skims, Kylie
- 00:06:41Cosmetics all took off on there. And so
- 00:06:43can you with your brand. The entire
- 00:06:45Satch Beauty is run on Shopify.
- 00:06:48Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. They're
- 00:06:49great. Shopify is a powerful set of
- 00:06:51tools that helps you start and manage
- 00:06:53your business, whether online or in
- 00:06:55person. It is designed to make life
- 00:06:57easier for entrepreneurs from beginners
- 00:06:59to big brands by providing tools that
- 00:07:01simplify selling with simple drag and
- 00:07:03drop store editor, easy to use marketing
- 00:07:05tools, and a back office that oversees
- 00:07:08all your operations. Imagine having a
- 00:07:10digital assistant that helps you sell
- 00:07:12your products seamlessly. Shopify is
- 00:07:14just that for your business. So, if you
- 00:07:17want to make your business dream a
- 00:07:19reality, go to shopify.com/zoyunlimited
- 00:07:22and see what's possible for you. Yeah,
- 00:07:25it's still kind of insane to me. I mean,
- 00:07:27this is these are just numbers right
- 00:07:29now, so maybe I'm not really fully
- 00:07:30feeling that what that really means, but
- 00:07:33but when you see someone like wearing
- 00:07:35that, for example, Billy Eyish, you're
- 00:07:37like, oh,
- 00:07:38yes. Yes. I think that's when it really
- 00:07:40feels real. When I run into someone in
- 00:07:42person and they're like, I have your lip
- 00:07:44liner in my purse right now. Or they
- 00:07:48sponsored by Such Beauty. They tell me
- 00:07:49what their favorite shade is. and
- 00:07:51knowing that I'm actually putting
- 00:07:52something out in the world that helps
- 00:07:54people even in a really small way.
- 00:07:56And it's not just limited to here
- 00:07:59either. Like when I was in Canada,
- 00:08:01people were using it. In the UK, like
- 00:08:03people are coming up to me telling me
- 00:08:04that they use our lip liner. And for a
- 00:08:07product that we've created as a team to
- 00:08:10have such a big impact, it's really it's
- 00:08:11really humbling to feel.
- 00:08:13Absolutely. And I think the impact is
- 00:08:15much greater than you think with videos
- 00:08:18and with product. Cuz I remember when
- 00:08:20Satcha Beauty first launched, one of my
- 00:08:22elementary school friends who I kept in
- 00:08:24touch with, I saw on her Instagram story
- 00:08:26like she went in store and there was
- 00:08:29like a product with your face on it and
- 00:08:30I'm like, "Wow,
- 00:08:32that is crazy cool." And it was launched
- 00:08:35in the pandemic too, right?
- 00:08:36Yeah. when I feel like beauty was
- 00:08:39hitting a point of saturation where so
- 00:08:42many influencers were trying to launch
- 00:08:44so many brands
- 00:08:46but a lot of them hit the reverse effect
- 00:08:48where things didn't exactly land with
- 00:08:50the market and a lot of them were
- 00:08:52perceived as sellouts.
- 00:08:54So what do you think was like the
- 00:08:56biggest success factor in terms of not
- 00:08:59losing trust but building like a
- 00:09:01cult-like following for Satch Beauty?
- 00:09:03Even with my content I always really
- 00:09:05valued authenticity. I don't take all
- 00:09:08the sponsorship offers that I get. I try
- 00:09:10to turn down at least 80 or 90% of it.
- 00:09:13So yeah, I try to be really picky with
- 00:09:15it so that I am actually giving value to
- 00:09:18my audience because people always say
- 00:09:20there's like a parasocial relationship
- 00:09:22that the audience has with creators.
- 00:09:24Maybe I have a parasocial relationship
- 00:09:25with the audience. But
- 00:09:26oh, I'd love to hear more about that.
- 00:09:28I want to give them something like they
- 00:09:30are completely transforming my life with
- 00:09:32how they support me. I want to at least
- 00:09:35be super honest, super authentic, give
- 00:09:37them the correct recommendation, give
- 00:09:38them the best products that I know. So,
- 00:09:41I try to do the same thing with Satri
- 00:09:44Beauty is really do the research, really
- 00:09:46come out with really great products. Me
- 00:09:48and my manager, we've had offers before
- 00:09:50to create a brand.
- 00:09:52Um, and when it's a product that I don't
- 00:09:54believe in or I don't want to put my
- 00:09:56name on, then we just turn it down. So
- 00:09:59having a team that really understands
- 00:10:01that, respects that and creates products
- 00:10:03that are actually quality, I think that
- 00:10:06goes beyond anything else because I
- 00:10:08don't think of ourselves like Sachi
- 00:10:10Beauty as a creator brand. Even though I
- 00:10:12am a creator and I'm one of the
- 00:10:14founders, but just having the product
- 00:10:16stand on its own, speak for itself, and
- 00:10:18having people who don't know about me
- 00:10:20know about the product, that is my
- 00:10:22priority.
- 00:10:23I think it's huge. Yeah. I think you've
- 00:10:26somehow managed to create a personality
- 00:10:29based brand into a brand that could last
- 00:10:31beyond just your name and you've really
- 00:10:35derisked a lot of the key risk of your
- 00:10:38name association with the brand. would
- 00:10:40love to chat more about it, but I would
- 00:10:42love to take us back a little first
- 00:10:45because I feel like in order to build
- 00:10:48this phenomenal brand that disrupted the
- 00:10:51beauty space, you first built a really
- 00:10:53distinguishable personal brand and I
- 00:10:55want to take us back a little bit and
- 00:10:57chat all about YouTube.
- 00:10:59Okay.
- 00:11:01The mother of our careers.
- 00:11:04Yeah.
- 00:11:04Yeah. Yeah. YouTube is always my bread
- 00:11:07and butter. I love it. It's I sound like
- 00:11:09such an old head every time I reminisce
- 00:11:11about the old times on YouTube, but it's
- 00:11:13just really fun to put almost a week
- 00:11:16worth of time to film, edit, have the
- 00:11:19concept and everything ready, the
- 00:11:21aesthetic ready, the font to go with the
- 00:11:23look, and then to do the thumbnail like
- 00:11:25Wait, so you were so conscious about the
- 00:11:27aesthetic, the font, and like the
- 00:11:29branding since the very beginning,
- 00:11:31right?
- 00:11:32Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's just
- 00:11:33something I always like to do. Um
- 00:11:35Oh, wow.
- 00:11:36Yeah. I love all the visual aspects of
- 00:11:38it. Maybe it's how I grew up. My dad was
- 00:11:39a photographer and my godfather was a
- 00:11:42makeup artist. So, I just have always
- 00:11:44been a bit more sensitive, I think, to
- 00:11:46visual aesthetics.
- 00:11:48Really? Did they inspire you in a lot of
- 00:11:50ways into like your hobbies and what
- 00:11:53you're passionate about?
- 00:11:54No, they kind of told me to quit
- 00:11:55YouTube,
- 00:11:56you know. Yeah. At the end of the day,
- 00:11:58still Asian parents, you know.
- 00:11:59Okay.
- 00:12:00How old were you when you started?
- 00:12:02I was
- 00:12:0320. I was 20. 20 2015, right?
- 00:12:06So, I was a sophomore in college.
- 00:12:08Did you have another channel by chance
- 00:12:10before that? I read on Famous Birthdays.
- 00:12:13I don't know if this is true.
- 00:12:15Yeah. They said you had another channel
- 00:12:18in 2006 called Salala Meow.
- 00:12:22Oh my god. Is that you?
- 00:12:23I did not have another channel. I just
- 00:12:25had a YouTube account to watch videos.
- 00:12:27I don't know how the internet found you.
- 00:12:29I don't know.
- 00:12:30You didn't upload a video until 2015.
- 00:12:33No, that was when I first started
- 00:12:36YouTube.
- 00:12:36Okay. Okay.
- 00:12:38Well, and I just did it for fun. It was
- 00:12:40so fun to do. I just filmed on my
- 00:12:42iPhone.
- 00:12:42Really?
- 00:12:43I really like how you had bilingual
- 00:12:46videos back then. The wi fra and
- 00:12:50everything. It really touches your
- 00:12:52roots. And I think when people overuse
- 00:12:54the word authenticity, like what does
- 00:12:56that even mean? It's just like who you
- 00:12:58are.
- 00:12:59You're so multi-dimensional as a person.
- 00:13:01And then you really invited people to
- 00:13:03like join different moments of your
- 00:13:05life.
- 00:13:06Yeah.
- 00:13:06And I found that really precious. And
- 00:13:08also like funny story you guys. I
- 00:13:10discovered Sarah's content not through
- 00:13:13beauty but through her intermittent
- 00:13:15fasting video. Yeah. It's how I first
- 00:13:17like learned about intermittent fasting
- 00:13:19and I was like this is fascinating. And
- 00:13:21this girl is really cool. She has a cool
- 00:13:23personality and she creates all these
- 00:13:25like cool makeup looks.
- 00:13:27A that's so great. Yeah. We were just
- 00:13:28chatting about it before filming, but a
- 00:13:31lot of people find me through my like
- 00:13:33fitness and weight loss content, which
- 00:13:34is surprising.
- 00:13:36Um,
- 00:13:36you also made a lot of fashion videos,
- 00:13:39like the hauls, you made mukbangs.
- 00:13:41Yeah.
- 00:13:42Um, how did you land with beauty?
- 00:13:44I don't think I ever made any conscious
- 00:13:47decisions to um, narrow down on a niche.
- 00:13:50Like I said, maybe it's egotistical of
- 00:13:52me to always just post whatever I'm
- 00:13:55interested in in the moment, but I just
- 00:13:58whatever I want to post, I post. And
- 00:14:00when I really care about a foundation or
- 00:14:03a look is really cool, I will just share
- 00:14:05it because I care about it. And I feel
- 00:14:07like that is the way to do it though is
- 00:14:09even if it seems ordinary, if you really
- 00:14:12are passionate about a subject, people
- 00:14:13will feel it and you'll make them care
- 00:14:15about it. That's how I felt about the
- 00:14:18Fay Wong look that I did or Kanto
- 00:14:20videos. Even though the viewership is
- 00:14:22not going to be as high as English
- 00:14:24because the audience is just smaller,
- 00:14:26it's my first language, so I want to
- 00:14:28just post it. Why not?
- 00:14:29Oh, that's precious. I used to make two
- 00:14:31versions of the same video, too.
- 00:14:32One in Mandarin. Yeah. And then I
- 00:14:34realized like nobody really speaks
- 00:14:36Mandarin on there. That the demo is
- 00:14:38really small.
- 00:14:38You got to post that in.
- 00:14:40Ah, are you on there?
- 00:14:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 00:14:42How do you like it?
- 00:14:43I love it. Maybe because I don't feel as
- 00:14:46much of a pressure to like blow up or
- 00:14:48have a lot of followers. I'm there
- 00:14:49mostly as just a viewer and observing
- 00:14:52and
- 00:14:53it's really cool. It's really refreshing
- 00:14:55to see so much Chinese content.
- 00:14:59Yeah. Yeah. And the beauty trends like I
- 00:15:01feel I feel very inspired by what
- 00:15:04the other side of the world is doing.
- 00:15:06Yeah. Absolutely.
- 00:15:07So you were just doing it for fun. You
- 00:15:09decided one day to turn on the camera.
- 00:15:11Yeah. Yeah,
- 00:15:12subscribe to my channel if you haven't
- 00:15:13yet.
- 00:15:14And little did you know, it would really
- 00:15:16change your life.
- 00:15:17Yeah, it is it was really incredible.
- 00:15:19Well, when I first started YouTube, I
- 00:15:21couldn't even make money off of it
- 00:15:22because I was on a student visa. I don't
- 00:15:24know if you like are familiar with the
- 00:15:26US visa regulations and whatnot, but I
- 00:15:30wasn't allowed to work. So, I was just
- 00:15:32like, "Okay, I won't monetize. I'll just
- 00:15:34do it for fun." And I was sharing tips
- 00:15:36for makeup or reviewing ColourPop. I was
- 00:15:39really into ColourPop back then on a
- 00:15:41college. It was cuz um Colourpop was so
- 00:15:45affordable yet it was so valuable. It's
- 00:15:48beautiful.
- 00:15:48Yeah, that was really an era. Makeup
- 00:15:50back then was so different. Also, it was
- 00:15:52really fun. It was like Kylie Cosmetics,
- 00:15:54ColourPop, Snapchat swatches. Yeah, I
- 00:15:57was just posting that, posting study
- 00:15:59tips and whatever.
- 00:16:01Study tips.
- 00:16:02You're a really real true college
- 00:16:04vlogger.
- 00:16:05Yeah. Yeah. Just whatever was authentic
- 00:16:07to me at the time. love.
- 00:16:08Um, that's how I started.
- 00:16:10How did you balance college and YouTube
- 00:16:12at the time?
- 00:16:13I had zero social life, which is
- 00:16:15something I kind of regret now.
- 00:16:16I also had zero social life during
- 00:16:18college. I want to hear about your side
- 00:16:21of the story.
- 00:16:21Why are we like this?
- 00:16:22I don't know. Maybe I was just really
- 00:16:24shy
- 00:16:25for some reason, which is crazy cuz I'm
- 00:16:27speaking to a camera, but I'm speaking
- 00:16:28to so many people online. But in person,
- 00:16:31I was always really shy. So even when I
- 00:16:32get invited to things, I would never
- 00:16:35push myself to go to events or parties
- 00:16:38or
- 00:16:39anything. So I just film and edit on the
- 00:16:41weekend and then Monday to Friday I'm at
- 00:16:42school. So a
- 00:16:44it was easy to balance it cuz I just
- 00:16:46didn't do anything social ever.
- 00:16:48Uhhuh.
- 00:16:48Yeah.
- 00:16:49Wow. And you grew up in Hong Kong and
- 00:16:51then went to the US for the first time
- 00:16:53for college. So I grew up in Hong Kong
- 00:16:56and then I was in Shanghai for a year
- 00:16:58for school and then I was in England for
- 00:17:01two years and then I started college in
- 00:17:04the US.
- 00:17:04Gotcha. And that's when YouTube started
- 00:17:07when you were kind of in this unfamiliar
- 00:17:09space. So in a sense YouTube was a safe
- 00:17:11space.
- 00:17:12It was. It really was
- 00:17:13for you to connect with other people who
- 00:17:15really cared about things you cared
- 00:17:18about.
- 00:17:18Yeah. Now that you put it that way,
- 00:17:19that's exactly what I was doing. A
- 00:17:21Yeah,
- 00:17:22that's precious. I was not making
- 00:17:23YouTube videos during college, but I
- 00:17:26also found a sense of like peace and
- 00:17:28solace in watching a lot of YouTube. I
- 00:17:31watch a lot of YouTube during college
- 00:17:33and yeah, that's when I discovered you.
- 00:17:35That's why I like YouTube. It's much
- 00:17:37more community building. I feel like
- 00:17:39that term is so overused, but
- 00:17:41it's it does feel like a a mini pocket
- 00:17:44of a community.
- 00:17:45It really does.
- 00:17:46And it's harder to do that on other
- 00:17:48platforms. I feel like Instagram is so
- 00:17:50aesthetic based and Tik Tok is so quick
- 00:17:52and entertainment based.
- 00:17:54So true.
- 00:17:54YouTube is a really good way to just
- 00:17:57talk to people.
- 00:17:59That's so true. Regarding platforms,
- 00:18:01which one do you love creating on and
- 00:18:04which one works the best for Satrop? I
- 00:18:06love YouTube the most cuz I think it
- 00:18:09takes me a long time to get to the
- 00:18:11point. Sometimes I yap so much so I
- 00:18:13don't have to worry too much about the
- 00:18:15attention span of people on Tik Tok
- 00:18:17which is nice. But Tik Tok is our best
- 00:18:19performing platform I would say because
- 00:18:22we got onboarded to Tik Tok shop and
- 00:18:24then there are so many people who kind
- 00:18:26of blew it up. It's it's almost like a
- 00:18:28happy coincidence the fact that the lip
- 00:18:30liner stain looks so jarring when you
- 00:18:33apply it and it's a dark line during the
- 00:18:35first 3 4 seconds which is the attention
- 00:18:38span of most people when they're
- 00:18:39swiping.
- 00:18:40Oh yeah.
- 00:18:40Yeah. You you got to get them in the
- 00:18:42first 3 seconds. So
- 00:18:43it's really eye-catching. Yeah. Like
- 00:18:45once you see you see it once and you
- 00:18:47can't forget it. Yeah. Exactly. So
- 00:18:49having that built-in kind of virality in
- 00:18:52the products just makes it perfect for
- 00:18:53Tik Tok.
- 00:18:54See how I look very presentable. The way
- 00:18:56I came to the interview is the way I go
- 00:18:58to the job.
- 00:18:59Did you build it for the virality of Tik
- 00:19:02Tok? Maybe subconsciously. It wasn't a
- 00:19:05conscious decision, but before we
- 00:19:07created the lip liner stain, I posted a
- 00:19:09Tik Tok of me using a brow tint on my
- 00:19:12lip. So, I saw that in a Forbes article.
- 00:19:15You were using
- 00:19:16a Maybelline brow tint. Yeah. Yeah.
- 00:19:18Yeah. A peel off brow tint. Uh,
- 00:19:21and maybe because that blew up, I kind
- 00:19:24of knew subconsciously that, okay, if I
- 00:19:26made a lip liner stain that has the same
- 00:19:28beginning to the Tik Tok, then maybe
- 00:19:30it'll blow up too. And it did.
- 00:19:32It's quite interesting because when
- 00:19:33Satcha Beauty first launched, it wasn't
- 00:19:35lip liner. It wasn't beauty consumables.
- 00:19:38It was more so skin care and the
- 00:19:40gouacha, right? like the beauty
- 00:19:43tools.
- 00:19:44How did you come up with that when you
- 00:19:46first launched?
- 00:19:47Well, everyone was in their skincare era
- 00:19:50during co and so was I. And I always
- 00:19:53knew that there was an issue with the
- 00:19:55gouachas and rollers that were on the
- 00:19:57market. And I wasn't the only one who
- 00:19:58felt it. A lot of people were
- 00:20:00complaining that they break easily or
- 00:20:02they're not sustainable or they're just
- 00:20:04porous materials. Specifically, a lot of
- 00:20:06dermatologists online were saying that
- 00:20:08they are pore stones, so it could trap
- 00:20:10bacteria, spread it across your face.
- 00:20:13So, I was looking on the market for an
- 00:20:15alternative to that. And when I met my
- 00:20:19co-founders and they asked me what I
- 00:20:21wanted to create, I'm like, this this is
- 00:20:23what I need because I can't find it
- 00:20:24anywhere and I need to buy it. So, let's
- 00:20:27make this together. And they were super
- 00:20:29down. And that's how we came up with the
- 00:20:31idea for the stainless steel gouache
- 00:20:33roller. It's virtually unbreakable and
- 00:20:36you can drop it from so far it won't
- 00:20:38break. It completely resolves the porous
- 00:20:41material problem that we have with jade
- 00:20:43rollers and gouachas. So yeah, it was
- 00:20:46just a very intuitive thing. I think a
- 00:20:48lot of the product ideas that I come up
- 00:20:50with are just literally things that I
- 00:20:53wish existed in my beauty routine that
- 00:20:55didn't exist already and I can't find in
- 00:20:56the stores and I just tell my product
- 00:20:58development team, "Hey, maybe we should
- 00:21:00make something here. I can't [ __ ]
- 00:21:01find this anywhere."
- 00:21:02Mhm. That's when you create a product
- 00:21:04that it's not just another product, but
- 00:21:06something that people can use and solves
- 00:21:08a problem. Yeah.
- 00:21:09Because you've hit that pain point. And
- 00:21:11I think two things that I think Sachi
- 00:21:13Beauty did really well in the beginning
- 00:21:15is a like niching down and b solving a
- 00:21:18problem in terms of its branding
- 00:21:20direction. It also really ties down to
- 00:21:22your roots like bring Eastern beauty to
- 00:21:25the west where gouacha was kind of niche
- 00:21:28and unheard of just like the lipstain.
- 00:21:31You created a whole trend, a whole wave
- 00:21:33of beauty that was so fascinating and it
- 00:21:36shows the power of going niche first
- 00:21:38before going broad because everything
- 00:21:41trendy comes from a niche first. I
- 00:21:43didn't even think of it as a niche. Like
- 00:21:46I'm like I've seen my grandmother use a
- 00:21:48roller since I was four.
- 00:21:50So I I'm almost not very aware that it
- 00:21:54was that much of a niche until of course
- 00:21:56like I read the market research about
- 00:21:57it. But I was just like, this is
- 00:21:59something that so many women use in
- 00:22:01their beauty routines in China. Like,
- 00:22:04why not have it here, too? It will help
- 00:22:06people with lymphatic drainage,
- 00:22:08puffiness, and sculpt their face. And I
- 00:22:10just thought it was something a lot of
- 00:22:12people are actually just missing. You
- 00:22:13know, I didn't think about it as like,
- 00:22:14oh, this is a niche product that some
- 00:22:17people use. I'm like, everyone needs
- 00:22:18this in their routine.
- 00:22:20Love that.
- 00:22:20Yeah.
- 00:22:21And it probably changed a lot of
- 00:22:22people's lives.
- 00:22:23I saw the before and after. It's crazy.
- 00:22:26I I know. My boyfriend asked me to do it
- 00:22:28on him all the time.
- 00:22:29Nice. Nice.
- 00:22:30Like, do you see that?
- 00:22:32This is the before
- 00:22:34and this is the after.
- 00:22:36Did you face a lot of competition when
- 00:22:39it like kind of blew up as this like new
- 00:22:41beauty wave?
- 00:22:42Oh, yeah.
- 00:22:42Cuz there were so many people, I would
- 00:22:44assume, like knocking off whatever
- 00:22:47rollers and gouacha you guys were
- 00:22:48making.
- 00:22:49Oh, yeah. like knockoffs is a constant
- 00:22:52battle that we're dealing with with the
- 00:22:55gouache iron roller. I remember 3 months
- 00:22:58after we launched, there was a certain
- 00:23:00other brand that came out with the exact
- 00:23:02same product literally 3 months after we
- 00:23:05launched. I just have to take it as
- 00:23:06flattering at this point. In the
- 00:23:07beginning, it really bothered me cuz I
- 00:23:10thought if we as the beauty industry
- 00:23:12allow this to happen over and over and
- 00:23:15trademarking or getting patents in the
- 00:23:17beauty industry is virtually impossible
- 00:23:19and even when you successfully have a
- 00:23:21patent, it's really difficult to
- 00:23:22enforce. So
- 00:23:25without the proper legal protection,
- 00:23:27it's so easy for people to dupe you or
- 00:23:30just copy your products just onetoone.
- 00:23:33And with that, it really hurts
- 00:23:35innovation cuz people won't want to take
- 00:23:37risks to create new products anymore.
- 00:23:39Maybe that's why people are seeing so
- 00:23:41many of the same products from different
- 00:23:42brands, but they're making exactly the
- 00:23:44same thing. Innovation is so rare
- 00:23:45because things get copied all the time.
- 00:23:47But yeah, even now the the lip stain,
- 00:23:50right?
- 00:23:50The lip stain. Oh my god. And some dupes
- 00:23:53use glue in their formulas. People have
- 00:23:55had horrible experiences. Even on Tik
- 00:23:57Tok shop, there are still millions of
- 00:23:59dupes out there. and we have to
- 00:24:02constantly report it, take it down. Same
- 00:24:04thing with Amazon. So, it's it's a
- 00:24:07constant battle. Even our cheek stain,
- 00:24:09which we launched three months ago,
- 00:24:11there's already dupes of that now. See
- 00:24:13dupes, of course.
- 00:24:14Culture is just getting out of hand, I
- 00:24:16feel like.
- 00:24:17But I think when you're the one being
- 00:24:20copied, everyone knows you're the trends
- 00:24:22setter instead of the trend chaser.
- 00:24:24That's that's how I try to think of it.
- 00:24:25You can never win by trying to copy
- 00:24:27someone.
- 00:24:27I know that that's how I try to think of
- 00:24:29it. I try to think of it as flattering
- 00:24:32um just so I don't get too angry. But
- 00:24:34when when they really cross the line I
- 00:24:36feel is when they use images of me using
- 00:24:39my lip liner as their ad. Yeah. They use
- 00:24:41me as digital ads.
- 00:24:43I'm like girl like just make your own
- 00:24:45ads. You're already duping the products.
- 00:24:47Come on. They got to dupe the founder
- 00:24:49too.
- 00:24:49I know. Like obviously they they know if
- 00:24:52anyone knows me they know that that is
- 00:24:55my product that I'm using. I'm not using
- 00:24:56a dupe.
- 00:24:57That is scary. Um, my good friend Ryan,
- 00:25:00the founder of Neurogum, said that they
- 00:25:02were facing the same thing where Tik Tok
- 00:25:04shop has all these like fake Neurogums
- 00:25:07and it's like things you put into your
- 00:25:08body. That really scares me. It's like
- 00:25:11what are people putting in these dupe
- 00:25:12formulas?
- 00:25:13Yeah. You never know. You never know.
- 00:25:16Wow. There's very little regulation.
- 00:25:18That is scary. And another potential
- 00:25:20challenge just from an outside
- 00:25:22perspective, you can speak on it from
- 00:25:24your side, I think, is with the gouacha
- 00:25:27and the beauty tools is that it's not
- 00:25:29repeatable purchases, right?
- 00:25:32Uh in terms of revenue streams, is that
- 00:25:34a concern on the brand's angle and is
- 00:25:37that why potentially you guys were
- 00:25:39looking more so into more consumable
- 00:25:41beauty for repeatable purchases?
- 00:25:44Not necessarily. Let's say you are using
- 00:25:47the gouache on the roller and you have
- 00:25:49that in your collection. We later
- 00:25:51launched the body gouacha which is also
- 00:25:53really great for lymphatic drainage on
- 00:25:55the body. I think people can have a
- 00:25:57collection of these tools.
- 00:25:58So I don't think it's like oh you just
- 00:26:00get the gouacha and we're never going to
- 00:26:02hear from this brand again.
- 00:26:03But of course we have joked about how
- 00:26:06because we made such an indestructible
- 00:26:08gouacha people don't ever buy it again.
- 00:26:09That is true. So, we have joked about it
- 00:26:11in the office, but it's not like the
- 00:26:13reason why we want to create makeup.
- 00:26:15But I think it's really smart to shift
- 00:26:18into more consumable beauty, especially
- 00:26:20when you can provide a shade range that
- 00:26:23people could use for different occasions
- 00:26:25and it's much easier to run out of two.
- 00:26:27So, it's a more recurring revenue
- 00:26:30stream.
- 00:26:30Yeah. Yeah. And you also just keep more
- 00:26:33of an ongoing relationship with the
- 00:26:34customer, hear what they want next, and
- 00:26:37it's really exciting.
- 00:26:38Yeah. Mhm.
- 00:26:39Are you able to see on the back end the
- 00:26:41repurchasing rate and so on?
- 00:26:43Yes. I just don't have the numbers off
- 00:26:45the top of my head.
- 00:26:45No worries. Initially, when you first
- 00:26:48launched Satch Beauty, were the
- 00:26:49consumers mostly your fans or was it
- 00:26:53beyond the community?
- 00:26:54I think it definitely started off as my
- 00:26:57fans or my audience cuz I was basically
- 00:27:00the only marketing person. Like our team
- 00:27:03was very very very small. Very small. So
- 00:27:07how small was it?
- 00:27:08It was me, my two co-founders and some
- 00:27:11contractors that we were working with.
- 00:27:14But yeah, in the very beginning it was
- 00:27:15very very small. So we had no money
- 00:27:18really to spend on influencers and if we
- 00:27:21did it was very limited. You were
- 00:27:23bootstrapping in the beginning and you
- 00:27:24didn't raise any money at all.
- 00:27:27So you kept the team really lean and it
- 00:27:30basically all depended on your personal
- 00:27:32brand to really market the product.
- 00:27:34Yeah. Yeah. So we didn't have that much
- 00:27:36of a budget to spend on marketing or
- 00:27:38influencers. So a lot
- 00:27:40was it all organic?
- 00:27:41A lot of it was organic actually. It was
- 00:27:44a lot of people who really loved me in
- 00:27:46the community like other makeup people
- 00:27:49who have supported me and I've supported
- 00:27:51them throughout our careers and they
- 00:27:53just gave me organic love when when we
- 00:27:56launched. I sent them my product and
- 00:27:58they were all posting about it you know
- 00:28:00for free and I think that really helped.
- 00:28:03Of course, my core audience also were
- 00:28:05such loyal fans that they just helped
- 00:28:07blow up Sachu Beauty
- 00:28:08from the beginning. I think something
- 00:28:10the team did phenomenally was building a
- 00:28:13network effect. I just checked and on
- 00:28:16the Safu website it said that you guys
- 00:28:18have over 132,000 affiliates and
- 00:28:22creators, a network of creators. And
- 00:28:25that is astounding. you've really nailed
- 00:28:28affiliate marketing so that you don't
- 00:28:30have to be a solo person just vetting
- 00:28:32for your brand and just cheering it on,
- 00:28:35but you have a network of influencers
- 00:28:37with their own unique communities really
- 00:28:39championing the brand. How did that even
- 00:28:42start? Because I think this is really
- 00:28:44something that brands are sleeping on
- 00:28:46the power of affiliation and you did it
- 00:28:48beautifully.
- 00:28:49Oh, thank you. Well, I think we did some
- 00:28:52affiliate marketing two 3 years ago, but
- 00:28:55I think it really really blew up when we
- 00:28:56were fully on boarded on Tik Tok shop
- 00:28:58where people can do affiliate like they
- 00:29:01can sign up to be an affiliate just
- 00:29:03through the platform itself. You don't
- 00:29:05need to be with an agency. You don't
- 00:29:06need to do anything outside of Tik Tok.
- 00:29:07You can just earn commission like a lot
- 00:29:09of people are doing that on Tik Tok shop
- 00:29:11now. So that I think really proved to us
- 00:29:15how important affiliate marketing is
- 00:29:17just from the success of using Tik Tok
- 00:29:19affiliates and then we try to onboard
- 00:29:21them to third party websites so that
- 00:29:23even people creators who are on YouTube
- 00:29:25or Instagram can have access to our
- 00:29:28affiliate program and it's great like as
- 00:29:30much as I would love to think that I
- 00:29:33have all this influence it's so
- 00:29:35important to have personalities that
- 00:29:37speak to their specific community no
- 00:29:39matter how large or small. Honestly,
- 00:29:41there are some people with very small
- 00:29:43followings and audiences that perform
- 00:29:45extremely well because they are speaking
- 00:29:48to how the product actually helps them
- 00:29:50in their lives and their community can
- 00:29:52relate to that. So,
- 00:29:54absolutely. I think there are creators
- 00:29:57who are very micro on TikTok who can
- 00:29:59make 20 to 30K a month from just
- 00:30:02commissions with the brands they partner
- 00:30:04with, which is really crazy.
- 00:30:06Really crazy. You really don't need a
- 00:30:07huge following.
- 00:30:08Yeah. Yeah. It's really incredible and
- 00:30:11it helps people build a following too if
- 00:30:13that even if that's the first thing you
- 00:30:14do on Tik Tok. I read an article a while
- 00:30:17ago about a woman who's a housewife who
- 00:30:20doesn't really have a full-time job and
- 00:30:23she started Tik Tok 7 months ago and now
- 00:30:27is making $10,000 a month. Like that
- 00:30:30level of extra income for a housewife
- 00:30:32could be life-changing and Tik Tok is
- 00:30:35giving them that opportunity. I think
- 00:30:37it's so incredible.
- 00:30:38That's amazing. In what ways do you
- 00:30:39think your life changed with starting
- 00:30:41Satch Beauty or starting YouTube? I was
- 00:30:44actually just talking about this and
- 00:30:45crying about this last night. I was even
- 00:30:48worried that my my eyes were going to be
- 00:30:49puffy, too.
- 00:30:50Wait, wait. I have tissue. I'm also very
- 00:30:52emotional.
- 00:30:52No, no, I'm all cried out. Don't worry.
- 00:30:54When I first started YouTube, I didn't
- 00:30:56think I could turn it into a career. And
- 00:30:59I've spoken about this very candidly on
- 00:31:01YouTube as well about how my family
- 00:31:03situation at that point in my life when
- 00:31:05I was around 22 was very very toxic. And
- 00:31:08there was
- 00:31:09I watched that video last night and I
- 00:31:10almost cried Sarah like I was like this
- 00:31:13is beautiful. You really changed your
- 00:31:15own destiny through your creativity and
- 00:31:17just passion for something.
- 00:31:19Thank you. Yeah. So, I think that point
- 00:31:21in time it was a complete 180 to be able
- 00:31:24to be independent again
- 00:31:26because once I met my manager, who's
- 00:31:29still my manager today, she was able to
- 00:31:32actually help me make enough money that
- 00:31:34I can support myself financially. And
- 00:31:36once I could do that, the first thing I
- 00:31:38did is to move out of my house. And now
- 00:31:41I almost take it for granted, but every
- 00:31:42time I look back, I'm like, I can't
- 00:31:44believe that happened. I can't believe I
- 00:31:46got myself out with the help of a lot of
- 00:31:48kind people. But there's nothing in life
- 00:31:50that's worth buying other than just your
- 00:31:53own sanity. Like that's the one thing I
- 00:31:54would always spend money on is to
- 00:31:56protect myself and I kind of want to
- 00:31:59just let people know that there's hope
- 00:32:01like in the end. Like I don't know if
- 00:32:03I'm making sense at all. It's all very
- 00:32:05jumbled. I felt like I was forced in a
- 00:32:07corner and nothing could save me other
- 00:32:09than just really working hard and
- 00:32:11grinding. And that to me way more than
- 00:32:15making millions of dollars now. like I
- 00:32:18don't need the lavish lifestyle. I don't
- 00:32:20need any of that. I'm just so grateful
- 00:32:22that I was able to get out of that
- 00:32:24situation and that jump in how much
- 00:32:26money I was making saved me and nothing
- 00:32:29compares to that. It's a beautiful
- 00:32:31story. It's a beautiful story. For
- 00:32:33context, Sarah was in not the best place
- 00:32:36in her life where she was surrounded by
- 00:32:38people who didn't support her and were
- 00:32:40kind of abusive and it was a toxic
- 00:32:44environment. And had it not been
- 00:32:46YouTube, it would have been very hard to
- 00:32:48leave that situation. Yeah.
- 00:32:50And more than just a creative freedom,
- 00:32:52more than just, oh, I got a following.
- 00:32:54It was more so a way for you to make a
- 00:32:57living on your own as a true creative as
- 00:33:00an artist and to gain a level of new
- 00:33:03freedom for you to shape your future the
- 00:33:05way you want.
- 00:33:06Yeah.
- 00:33:06So, that's that's the power of content.
- 00:33:09Yeah. Yeah. It it's incredible that we
- 00:33:12live in a time when we can do this.
- 00:33:14Yeah,
- 00:33:15it it's crazy. When I left Hong Kong, it
- 00:33:17was also during the time when there was
- 00:33:18a bit of political instability and a lot
- 00:33:21of my friends are trying to leave as
- 00:33:23well and just being able to have this
- 00:33:26route of leaving because of the work
- 00:33:29that I'm doing. It felt like a miracle.
- 00:33:31Like I don't think I've fully process
- 00:33:32I'm almost 30 and that's my trauma. I
- 00:33:34haven't fully processed it yet. It takes
- 00:33:36time to really unwire and unlearn a lot
- 00:33:39of the things. But I think 19, 20
- 00:33:41yearear-old Sarah, like do you think she
- 00:33:43would have imagined the life you have
- 00:33:45today?
- 00:33:46Mm-m. She would be so proud.
- 00:33:48I'm sure
- 00:33:49she would be really happy.
- 00:33:50Yeah. I think like sometimes when we hit
- 00:33:53hard times, we're like, "Oh, damn." Like
- 00:33:55[ __ ] is hard. But then when you look
- 00:33:56back, it's like, "Oh my gosh, my 16, 17
- 00:33:59yearear-old self would cried and scream
- 00:34:02to be living this life right now."
- 00:34:04Yeah.
- 00:34:04Yeah. I try to remind myself and be
- 00:34:06grateful. And I'm sure like so many
- 00:34:08young women that your content and the
- 00:34:11amazing products you launched that touch
- 00:34:12will be so grateful that you took a leap
- 00:34:16of faith and despite all the fear and
- 00:34:18the challenges, you really showed up and
- 00:34:21made it happen. Yeah. It's not just a
- 00:34:23thought, but you put it into action
- 00:34:25through a lot of the courage. So super
- 00:34:27proud of you for that. Oh, let me get
- 00:34:30you some tissue. Caught me during my
- 00:34:31loot phase. A,
- 00:34:34it's okay. We love a good cycle. I'm
- 00:34:37trying to like recover my period.
- 00:34:39Yeah,
- 00:34:40you don't have your period, right?
- 00:34:42I had insomnia during college and that
- 00:34:45really [ __ ] up my hormones. I had one
- 00:34:47and a half year of insomnia and then
- 00:34:49like my period just stopped. Still
- 00:34:51trying to recover it. Are you seeing a
- 00:34:53doctor about it?
- 00:34:54I've seen different doctors but also
- 00:34:56trying to look into like functional
- 00:34:58medicine cuz I feel like the western
- 00:35:00medicine is not the best. Chinese
- 00:35:02medicine for sure.
- 00:35:03Yeah. And I really love how you're just
- 00:35:05like always super in tune to your roots.
- 00:35:08Sometimes I'm just like, "Yeah, let me
- 00:35:10get the quick fix and whatever." And I'm
- 00:35:12like, "Actually,
- 00:35:14I think our ancestors know."
- 00:35:16They definitely know. And especially
- 00:35:18with things related to hormones, I 100%
- 00:35:21think you should talk to Chinese
- 00:35:23doctors.
- 00:35:24Yeah. How's your health right now? I
- 00:35:26mean, I feel like you're at your best
- 00:35:27shape, both mentally and physically. I
- 00:35:30feel like I'm at the best point cuz when
- 00:35:32I was younger, I was not respecting my
- 00:35:35body as much. We were just talking about
- 00:35:37this how you didn't sleep much.
- 00:35:39Yeah, I I did not sleep. I didn't know
- 00:35:42how to eat to nourish myself. But you
- 00:35:44look great.
- 00:35:45Let's just say that. I don't know how
- 00:35:47you did it, but that's talent right
- 00:35:48there.
- 00:35:49Thank you. Thank you.
- 00:35:50Yeah. And and I was also a really big
- 00:35:53smoker when I was younger
- 00:35:55and that's kind of how I coped with
- 00:35:56anxiety, but now I chew nicotine gum
- 00:36:00still, but I completely quit. And yeah,
- 00:36:03I just feel like all these things I
- 00:36:06didn't really think too much about
- 00:36:08before. Now I'm not fully paying the
- 00:36:10price for it in my health, but I can
- 00:36:13feel it. Like once you pass 25, I kind
- 00:36:15of feel the smoking more, the lack of
- 00:36:17sleep, the poor diet, like all that
- 00:36:20feels a little heavier.
- 00:36:21It's crazy because your skin, if there's
- 00:36:24like a tier of like skin aspiration,
- 00:36:26your skin is definitely up there. And
- 00:36:28I'm always like, I don't know what Sarah
- 00:36:30does to take care of her skin, but she's
- 00:36:32always glowing, giving this like
- 00:36:34beautiful, thriving energy.
- 00:36:36A thank you.
- 00:36:37Yeah, thank you. I think a lot of it is
- 00:36:39also the makeup.
- 00:36:41No, like you without makeup is still
- 00:36:43looks so great. A thank you. Now I'm
- 00:36:45doing all these things. I'm actually
- 00:36:47exercising, cooking for myself a lot,
- 00:36:49and just taking care of myself cuz it's
- 00:36:52also like maybe a Chinese mindset, but I
- 00:36:54always thought it's self-indulgent to to
- 00:36:57take care of yourself,
- 00:36:58to actually take time to care about
- 00:37:00yourself, which is insane.
- 00:37:02Oh, wow.
- 00:37:02But did you have any limiting beliefs
- 00:37:04growing up? Did they become any
- 00:37:06challenges in your content journey or
- 00:37:08like building statue? Not really.
- 00:37:10That's great.
- 00:37:11I I was always very comfortable even
- 00:37:14when people didn't like me. Okay.
- 00:37:17Um maybe cuz I wasn't super popular in
- 00:37:20school, so I was really okay with even
- 00:37:24if like I didn't get that many views or
- 00:37:26if I get a lot of mean comments, I was
- 00:37:28kind of okay with it. So, I think it was
- 00:37:31me being almost overly confident that
- 00:37:33got me to start posting cuz so many
- 00:37:35people think, "Oh, you're cringe. Why
- 00:37:38the [ __ ] are you posting this? Like, who
- 00:37:39who the [ __ ] do you think you are? I'm
- 00:37:40sure you can relate. Like, a lot of
- 00:37:42creators feel the same way. Maybe
- 00:37:44because my mom was so sweet to me
- 00:37:45growing up and always encouraged me. So,
- 00:37:47I was like, it's okay. I I want to post
- 00:37:49a video. That's why I posted it. Like,
- 00:37:51yeah,
- 00:37:51that's awesome. I feel like I was also
- 00:37:54delusional in starting YouTube where I
- 00:37:56was like, I'm going to make it.
- 00:37:57Oh, yeah. But I feel like I do have
- 00:37:59limiting beliefs in other spaces, which
- 00:38:01is why I'm starting this series because
- 00:38:03I feel like even though I majored in
- 00:38:05business and I've worked in the realms
- 00:38:07of financial services, marketing, all
- 00:38:10aspects of business, I sometimes still
- 00:38:12get scared in terms of like for example
- 00:38:14starting my own brand and things like
- 00:38:16that. And I'm like, if I'm scared gosh,
- 00:38:18like what about the millions of other
- 00:38:20young women out there? So yeah, trying
- 00:38:22to start the series to make business
- 00:38:24less intimidating and more fun for young
- 00:38:26women. Maybe men go through this too.
- 00:38:29But this is definitely something a lot
- 00:38:31of women deal with the self-limiting
- 00:38:34beliefs. It could just be social
- 00:38:35conditioning that's getting to your head
- 00:38:37because look at your impressive
- 00:38:38portfolio. That's insane. Exactly what
- 00:38:41you said. Like how could you out of
- 00:38:43anybody doubt yourself and what you can
- 00:38:44achieve? That's crazy to me.
- 00:38:46No, thank you. And one limiting belief
- 00:38:48that I want all of us to remove is that
- 00:38:51things need to be expensive, that you
- 00:38:53need to pay extra. So, I'm going to let
- 00:38:54you in on a little secret. I use
- 00:38:57Racketin to get huge deals and get money
- 00:39:00back, especially on essentials like this
- 00:39:02tablet or 10% back from travels with
- 00:39:04Verbal. If you're not getting cash back
- 00:39:06from Racketin, you're losing money.
- 00:39:08Racketin is the largest cashback site
- 00:39:10that partners with over 3,500
- 00:39:13biggest brands like Best Buy, Apple,
- 00:39:15Target, Nike, Expedia. It's completely
- 00:39:18free to use. You just click through
- 00:39:19links found on Rocketin, then shop on
- 00:39:21the store's website like you normally
- 00:39:22would or use the browser extension where
- 00:39:24you get up to 15% cash back at hundreds
- 00:39:27of your favorite stores. So that thing
- 00:39:29in your shopping cart that you've been
- 00:39:30waiting for price drop, now is the time
- 00:39:33to thank you for being supporters of the
- 00:39:34marketing bestie community. You're also
- 00:39:36getting a $30 signup bonus when you make
- 00:39:38a qualifying purchase by clicking the
- 00:39:40link in my description or go to
- 00:39:41rakuten.com/r/zl.
- 00:39:45Finding the right people to support you
- 00:39:47is also super crucial. How were you able
- 00:39:49to bring in the right people to your
- 00:39:52team? And how has that been working with
- 00:39:55people you enjoy working with? I've
- 00:39:56cried about this, but I'm sorry. This is
- 00:39:58a very cryy episode, but
- 00:40:00Oh, it's all good.
- 00:40:01It's the real stuff.
- 00:40:02Yeah. Thank you for being so vulnerable.
- 00:40:04I think um
- 00:40:05you make it very easy with this
- 00:40:06ambiance.
- 00:40:09One person that I have thanked time and
- 00:40:11time again, I've cried to her about
- 00:40:13this. She knows I love her is my manager
- 00:40:15who I'm still with.
- 00:40:17Oh yeah.
- 00:40:17And yeah, she just always put me first
- 00:40:20and when I'm not comfortable with
- 00:40:22something, she 100% understands,
- 00:40:25advocates for me, but still pushes me
- 00:40:28gently to reach my full potential when I
- 00:40:30have self-doubt.
- 00:40:31I love that when people see your
- 00:40:33potential more than you see yourself.
- 00:40:35Yeah. But there's also a way to do it
- 00:40:37because I feel like too aggressive
- 00:40:39doesn't work with me sometimes.
- 00:40:41Um Yeah. It's almost like she's this
- 00:40:43third parent I have who just mothers me
- 00:40:46so well. And she also recently had a
- 00:40:48baby.
- 00:40:49I know. Congrats to her.
- 00:40:51Yeah. So, a And does she help you find
- 00:40:53your co-founders for Satu to bring on
- 00:40:56the right people? Wow. I was going to
- 00:40:57say cuz I'm always very curious if
- 00:41:00creators or personality brands seek out
- 00:41:03their co-founders or their co-founders
- 00:41:05found them to create uh a brand
- 00:41:07together. Because if you try to
- 00:41:09operationalize a brand yourself as a
- 00:41:11creator, it will be very very heavy time
- 00:41:14investment.
- 00:41:15Yeah, absolutely not. Not just time
- 00:41:17investment, creative people
- 00:41:19fundamentally, I just don't think if
- 00:41:21your strength, you know, that your
- 00:41:23strength is in creatives, if you force
- 00:41:25yourself to be an accountant or you
- 00:41:27force yourself to do everything
- 00:41:29operationally, that it's going to lead
- 00:41:30to the most optimal results. I think,
- 00:41:32you know, as a creator, if you're
- 00:41:33self-employed, you kind of want to do
- 00:41:35everything because you wear all the hats
- 00:41:37in your content. Like, you're editing,
- 00:41:38you're conceptualizing, you're building
- 00:41:40the set, you're doing all the research,
- 00:41:42you're doing everything yourself. So,
- 00:41:43you feel like in business, you can do
- 00:41:45that, too. But you need a team with
- 00:41:47complimentary skills. That's something I
- 00:41:49had to learn because you just can't do
- 00:41:51everything yourself. Same way other way
- 00:41:53around. Like, someone who's really good
- 00:41:54at operations and supply chains and all
- 00:41:56those things, they can't post a TikTok
- 00:41:58about the brand. They they don't know
- 00:41:59the first idea to help with front-facing
- 00:42:02stuff with the brand and it's important
- 00:42:04to have people with complimentary
- 00:42:06skills. For sure.
- 00:42:07That is so true.
- 00:42:08Yeah.
- 00:42:08What are some new skills you had to
- 00:42:10acquire shifting from creator Sarah to
- 00:42:13founder Sarah?
- 00:42:14I had to learn to be a lot more zen.
- 00:42:18emotional regulation is definitely a
- 00:42:19really big thinguge
- 00:42:21because content can be tultuous, but
- 00:42:24having a really big brand and having
- 00:42:27other people on the team and knowing
- 00:42:29that their lives are affected just as
- 00:42:31much as yours is a really big
- 00:42:34responsibility. So the stresses can be
- 00:42:36crazy like the highs are highs but the
- 00:42:38lows can be really low. So
- 00:42:40sure,
- 00:42:41learning how to actually emotionally
- 00:42:43regulate was actually something I
- 00:42:45learned maybe too late in life after 25.
- 00:42:47But
- 00:42:48yeah, that was a really big thing I had
- 00:42:50to learn. Having that self-awareness
- 00:42:52though is so key. I don't think it's
- 00:42:54ever too late to have awareness of
- 00:42:56yourself because that's the first step
- 00:42:58to
- 00:42:59making any tangible changes.
- 00:43:01Yeah, absolutely. And I think sometimes
- 00:43:03when your life is just go go go go go go
- 00:43:05go go go go go go go go go go go go go
- 00:43:05go go go go go you don't stop and
- 00:43:06reflect and you might be making the same
- 00:43:08mistake over and over and over again and
- 00:43:09you don't notice and no one's really
- 00:43:11going to point out that pattern to you
- 00:43:13unless you just see it in yourself cuz
- 00:43:15no one's with you 24/7. You kind of have
- 00:43:17to just take time self-reflect and
- 00:43:19improve.
- 00:43:20Mhm. Do you have any tools that you use
- 00:43:22in the self-discovery journey or on the
- 00:43:25path to self-awareness? journaling and I
- 00:43:28think having a group of very trusted
- 00:43:30friends or family who will tell you when
- 00:43:34you are [ __ ] up, who will be honest
- 00:43:36with you,
- 00:43:37that is so key. Yeah.
- 00:43:38Cuz I feel like the more successful you
- 00:43:40become, the more people pleasers or the
- 00:43:44yesers, how do you categorize them?
- 00:43:46Yes. People.
- 00:43:47Yes people. Yes. The more of them start
- 00:43:49to come into your life and lo and
- 00:43:51behold, you don't have an accurate
- 00:43:52perception of your reality.
- 00:43:55Yeah. I think the best relationships are
- 00:43:57the people who can hold a mirror against
- 00:43:59you and let you see where you can
- 00:44:02improve. Of course, there's like a
- 00:44:04balance. You don't want Yes. people, but
- 00:44:06you also don't want mean people who just
- 00:44:08will put you down no matter what you're
- 00:44:09doing.
- 00:44:10Yeah.
- 00:44:10But having people who love you and can
- 00:44:12give you criticism in a really loving
- 00:44:14way is incredible. I think my boyfriend
- 00:44:17Carlo is really great at that. My mom is
- 00:44:19great at that. Yeah. Just having good
- 00:44:21people in your camp is always wonderful.
- 00:44:24And journaling is also good. Just free
- 00:44:27flow. Write all your emotions down.
- 00:44:29Whatever you're feeling, get good at
- 00:44:31describing what you're feeling.
- 00:44:33So true.
- 00:44:34Mhm. And then try to see if there are
- 00:44:35patterns there that you didn't notice
- 00:44:38before and try to find the source of it
- 00:44:40and understand how to manage them. And I
- 00:44:43think also when you journal things, you
- 00:44:45see your emotions, your stresses kind of
- 00:44:46pass you.
- 00:44:48And once you recognize that pattern,
- 00:44:49it's a lot easier to just see it for
- 00:44:51what it is. It's just feelings. They're
- 00:44:52temporary. And it's not who you are,
- 00:44:55it's just how you feel at the time.
- 00:44:57That's true. Everything's like
- 00:44:58temporary,
- 00:44:59the highs and the lows. So understanding
- 00:45:02that is like a huge game changer. I love
- 00:45:04how you have such a trusting and it's a
- 00:45:07very warm relationship with your
- 00:45:08boyfriend.
- 00:45:10Yeah. And I'm wondering how much of
- 00:45:12content do you share or not share
- 00:45:15because your name is now associated with
- 00:45:17a brand.
- 00:45:18Oh, how do you attract a brand that you
- 00:45:21want to work with? What was your revenue
- 00:45:24pie breakdown? Never heard of this guy.
- 00:45:26Never seen a picture of him. That's
- 00:45:27apparent. A lot of secrets in Chinese
- 00:45:29families. Like if I had no fear. I don't
- 00:45:31know.
- 00:45:33Insane. Hey guys, really quickly.
