00:00:00
hey guys this is gee from itunes hq i
00:00:02
hope everybody's doing good
00:00:03
staying safe uh it's been a while karu's
00:00:06
been taking over youtube mostly but
00:00:08
i'm happy to be back with you and today
00:00:11
i will be talking about one of the most
00:00:12
difficult
00:00:13
aspects of the tennis game which is
00:00:15
actually closing out matches
00:00:16
this is one of the reasons why tennis is
00:00:18
so difficult it's not like basketball
00:00:20
where you can just
00:00:21
you know hold on to the ball and just
00:00:23
wait for the game to end it's not like
00:00:25
soccer where you can just
00:00:26
pass among your teammates and wait for
00:00:28
the clock to run out
00:00:29
in tennis you actually gotta go out
00:00:31
there and you gotta close the match
00:00:33
you have to win the last point there's
00:00:35
no time limit there's no clock
00:00:37
um that it's running in your favor you
00:00:39
gotta go out there and you gotta win the
00:00:41
last point
00:00:42
otherwise you're going to lose whether
00:00:44
you want to call it
00:00:45
wasting a lead or playing out choking
00:00:48
this happens at every level of the sport
00:00:50
you can see several examples federer
00:00:53
wasting two match points in the
00:00:55
wimbledon final against
00:00:56
djokovic he also wasted another two
00:01:00
match points against djokovic in the u.s
00:01:02
open
00:01:03
i believe if i'm not mistaken was two
00:01:05
years in a row
00:01:06
in the semifinals that could have given
00:01:08
him other titles
00:01:10
alex zverev was leading dominic tm
00:01:13
in his first ever grand slam final and
00:01:17
you know you can see examples over and
00:01:18
over repeating themselves um the two
00:01:20
guys that
00:01:22
don't go through that a lot are djokovic
00:01:24
and nadal because they're just
00:01:26
at a different level emotionally but
00:01:28
besides that
00:01:29
the pros do it amateurs do it college
00:01:32
players do it so
00:01:33
it's something that we all as a tennis
00:01:36
world need to work on
00:01:37
so today we'll be going through some
00:01:39
concrete steps you can take to take your
00:01:41
closing game to the whole next level
00:01:44
[Music]
00:01:46
also i just really wanted to appreciate
00:01:48
the support everybody has been giving us
00:01:50
we've seen some crazy growth within the
00:01:53
last few months
00:01:54
crew has worked has been working
00:01:56
extremely hard to put out some good
00:01:57
content for you
00:01:58
so i really appreciate uh you
00:02:00
subscribing and letting us know
00:02:01
the things you do like and the things
00:02:03
you don't like if you haven't subscribed
00:02:05
yet i ask you
00:02:06
please do and make sure you're letting
00:02:08
us know what things you like
00:02:10
and what things you don't like because
00:02:12
ultimately we really just want to make
00:02:13
this channel
00:02:14
a very useful resource for you for
00:02:16
whether you're an amateur
00:02:18
whether you're a college player whether
00:02:20
you're a junior
00:02:21
and we just want to make put out things
00:02:22
that are going to be good for you so let
00:02:24
us know
00:02:25
we'll try to work on it and yeah we
00:02:27
really appreciate the support
00:02:28
and it we always drop a link below in
00:02:31
our comments
00:02:32
if you'd like to support our channel and
00:02:33
you're planning already and buying
00:02:35
something
00:02:35
on amazon or tennis warehouse you can
00:02:37
just use our links there's no extra cost
00:02:39
to you and we got a little bit for it so
00:02:41
great way to support our channel so the
00:02:42
first step you need to work on
00:02:44
when trying to close out more matches is
00:02:46
identifying
00:02:47
what happens in those moments where
00:02:49
you're either serving for a match where
00:02:51
you got a match point you got a big lead
00:02:53
and then things go downhill from there
00:02:57
that may be that you're rushing the
00:02:58
points uh you're not being as consistent
00:03:00
as you are
00:03:01
in the rest of the match maybe because
00:03:03
of nerves
00:03:04
maybe because you're tired it may be
00:03:06
that you're becoming too passive and
00:03:08
you're not going for shots enough so
00:03:10
every every player has a different issue
00:03:13
in those moments but
00:03:15
they're usually the same issue that
00:03:16
keeps repeating itself so you need to
00:03:18
identify
00:03:19
what's going on why are you playing
00:03:22
differently than you usually do
00:03:24
personally in my case is because i
00:03:26
always try to rush the points too much
00:03:28
i just got so euphoric i just really
00:03:30
wanted to close out the match you know
00:03:33
you may be able to identify with this
00:03:35
you know four four in the third set
00:03:37
uh you go and you suddenly break your
00:03:39
opponent and it's awesome you're just
00:03:41
like oh i got this in the bag
00:03:42
and you go and you sit down and change
00:03:44
over you just open your water bottle
00:03:46
you're just shaking you're just so ex
00:03:47
just so static you're just like all
00:03:49
right i got this in the bag and you just
00:03:50
keep picturing
00:03:51
you know you're going to the net and
00:03:53
you're shaking your opponent's hands
00:03:55
just
00:03:55
you're playing what you're going to tell
00:03:57
him and you know if you're in college
00:03:59
you're just picturing all your teammates
00:04:01
rushing the court and you know
00:04:02
celebrating with you and then you go out
00:04:04
there and you make a double fault hit a
00:04:06
shot at the bottom of the net and then
00:04:08
you're down above 30 and you
00:04:10
start getting desperate so the reason
00:04:12
why that happened was
00:04:14
i always got so ecstatic
00:04:17
to close out the match then i did not
00:04:19
stick to my game plan
00:04:21
i tried to rush points too early i tried
00:04:23
to go for the lines
00:04:24
and that made me make more errors and
00:04:27
consequently that just made me less
00:04:29
confident in myself
00:04:30
which made me rush even more and then
00:04:32
the next thing you know
00:04:33
the game the match was over and my lead
00:04:35
was gone and i would be stuck thinking
00:04:37
about that match for weeks
00:04:38
after that there was one specific match
00:04:41
i still remember
00:04:42
today we were playing against the
00:04:44
university of tulsa
00:04:45
and they had just beaten usc who was
00:04:48
number one in the country
00:04:49
the day before and we were playing tight
00:04:51
match i was playing a good opponent
00:04:53
and i lost the first three and then i
00:04:56
won six one
00:04:56
and i was up four zero and i was just
00:04:59
thinking oh man i'm going to get such a
00:05:01
good ranking after
00:05:02
this and it's going to be such a great
00:05:03
win and i started rushing points and
00:05:06
just change over after changeover i just
00:05:08
blanked out started making a lot of
00:05:10
mistakes going for shots i didn't need
00:05:11
to go
00:05:12
and the next thing i knew i had lost 6'4
00:05:15
and
00:05:16
our team lost and i felt the weight of
00:05:18
the world on my shoulders and i
00:05:20
felt like it was my responsibility so
00:05:23
there was something that made me stop
00:05:24
and
00:05:25
think about what i was doing wrong in
00:05:27
those scenarios
00:05:28
on a basic level whenever these
00:05:29
situations happen
00:05:31
it usually comes down to a lack of
00:05:33
planning and a lack of discipline
00:05:35
which are usually caused by too much
00:05:37
excitement and too much thinking
00:05:39
about the act of actually winning the
00:05:41
game
00:05:42
but it's very important for you to
00:05:43
identify what's going on at that time if
00:05:46
you're rushing
00:05:47
if you're becoming too passive if you're
00:05:49
making poor shot selection so when you
00:05:52
do understand what's happening in your
00:05:54
case
00:05:54
you can go on and move on to the next
00:05:56
step which is to actually develop a game
00:05:59
plan for those situations
00:06:01
so what worked for me was to have a set
00:06:03
game plan
00:06:04
that i knew i could count on whenever it
00:06:06
came down to
00:06:07
serving out for a match this game plan
00:06:10
needs to be very specific
00:06:11
and it needs to be repeatable and it
00:06:13
needs to be measurable
00:06:15
so essentially you want to decide
00:06:18
where you're going to serve where you're
00:06:20
gonna hit the next shot and the first
00:06:21
point
00:06:22
where you're gonna serve in the second
00:06:23
point where you're gonna hit the next
00:06:24
shot in the
00:06:25
next point how many shots you're gonna
00:06:27
hit and
00:06:28
how many shots you're gonna go for if
00:06:30
you're becoming too passive
00:06:32
you might wanna decide that you're gonna
00:06:35
have to hit a winner before three shots
00:06:37
um if you're rushing through shots you
00:06:39
may wanna think
00:06:40
i am going to make every ball
00:06:44
possible i'm gonna make eight shots
00:06:46
before you try to go for a winner
00:06:48
in every point in that last game um but
00:06:50
by having these specific
00:06:53
goals for every point you'll be able to
00:06:55
rely on that game plan
00:06:57
uh when you sit down in that changeover
00:06:59
at a 5'4
00:07:01
at a 6'5 you will not have that
00:07:03
desperation
00:07:04
of of what do i do now to close out the
00:07:07
match you will know
00:07:08
exactly you will have a blueprint of
00:07:10
what that last game is going to look
00:07:11
like
00:07:12
so you'll know when you sit down that
00:07:14
changeover you just need to focus
00:07:16
um on whatever you're going to do next
00:07:19
and
00:07:19
when you're coming up with a game plan
00:07:21
you should focus on your
00:07:22
bread winning shots in my case for
00:07:24
instance
00:07:25
when i was serving on the left side i
00:07:28
knew that i have a good kick
00:07:30
serve which gives me margins and that
00:07:33
would
00:07:33
usually return a shot to my inside out
00:07:35
forehand so
00:07:36
just think about what shots you're the
00:07:38
most comfortable with the shots that
00:07:40
even in a pretty nervous situation
00:07:43
you'll still be able to make them
00:07:45
and work on a game plan around those
00:07:47
shots
00:07:48
the third step to becoming a better
00:07:50
closer is to actually go out there and
00:07:52
practice your game plan
00:07:54
and start tweaking it accordingly you
00:07:56
can't
00:07:57
just think about something and expect
00:07:59
that it's going to work at the 5'4 but
00:08:01
so i suggest that you go
00:08:03
on the court you get on the court and
00:08:04
you literally practice what your final
00:08:06
game is going to look like
00:08:08
when you're serving out for a match you
00:08:10
just keep going over and over so you
00:08:12
become extremely comfortable
00:08:14
uh whenever that time comes and you'll
00:08:16
be able to repeat it time after time
00:08:18
uh it's definitely worked out for me uh
00:08:21
i became
00:08:21
a much better closer and i do think that
00:08:24
by doing that you'll be more confident
00:08:26
when the time comes and
00:08:29
the good thing is you just keep building
00:08:30
on it so you do it and then it works
00:08:32
once
00:08:33
and you feel oh great that's i'm going
00:08:35
to try it again and then it works the
00:08:36
second time it works the third time
00:08:37
and then the last thing you know you're
00:08:38
just considering yourself a very clutch
00:08:40
player
00:08:41
some extra tips to close out matches are
00:08:44
one first serves are extremely important
00:08:47
i suggest that when you're trying to
00:08:50
close out a match
00:08:51
you don't go full out for you know an
00:08:53
ace uh you go for 80
00:08:55
serves 85 serves that you're working
00:08:59
that allow you to still stay in an
00:09:01
aggressive
00:09:02
stance but that will give you a better
00:09:04
margins because
00:09:05
if you miss too many first serves that's
00:09:08
going to give your opponent
00:09:09
an opportunity to attack and play loose
00:09:11
and a lot of times players are
00:09:13
just you know they had they have just
00:09:16
given up
00:09:16
the last thing you want to do is give
00:09:18
them an opportunity to slap a shot and
00:09:20
hit a winner and then they're
00:09:21
suddenly like oh i got an extra life on
00:09:24
me maybe i'll just hit four winners and
00:09:26
break the game and so
00:09:27
working with first serves is extremely
00:09:29
important
00:09:31
the second tip is to focus on rituals so
00:09:34
besides having a game
00:09:36
plan for yourself it's actually very
00:09:38
important to have rituals
00:09:39
that you're working on outside the point
00:09:42
so
00:09:42
whether that's going to your towel
00:09:44
whether that's bouncing the ball
00:09:46
six seven times whether that's tiny
00:09:48
shoelaces whatever it is obviously
00:09:50
you want to be respectful of your
00:09:52
opponent but by having those rituals
00:09:54
you'll be able to
00:09:55
develop habits and you keep repeating
00:09:57
them over and over and that's just going
00:09:59
to trigger
00:09:59
the right emotions the right feelings in
00:10:01
your head when the time comes
00:10:03
to repeat that game plan you've
00:10:05
developed the third tip
00:10:06
is to actually focus on high margin
00:10:09
shots so
00:10:10
while it's great to end up the match
00:10:13
with a
00:10:14
winner a forehand winner or go to the
00:10:15
net and hit that huge overhead and
00:10:17
bounces off the court
00:10:19
i would say that it's much safer and
00:10:21
much more successful
00:10:23
to focus on high margin shots so shots
00:10:26
that are staying
00:10:27
away from the lines playing through the
00:10:29
middle is a great great option
00:10:31
both on your serve and returning during
00:10:34
the points that's going to push your
00:10:35
opponent back
00:10:36
and finally land you a short ball and
00:10:39
then you can go for that winner but
00:10:41
you know keeping that keeping those
00:10:43
margins high
00:10:44
is a great way to successfully close out
00:10:46
a match and
00:10:47
you may be thinking oh what if i have a
00:10:50
whole game plan that i've come up with
00:10:53
that i've been playing against this
00:10:54
opponent that has a really bad forehand
00:10:55
and i've been going
00:10:56
to his forehand am i supposed to change
00:10:59
up my game just in this final game just
00:11:01
to close out the match
00:11:03
i say that you need to assess the
00:11:05
situation
00:11:07
because if there's a clear pattern that
00:11:09
you've been working on
00:11:11
and it's been working throughout the
00:11:12
match and
00:11:14
you know your pun is just breaking down
00:11:16
you definitely want to stick to that for
00:11:18
the last game and be
00:11:19
disciplined but keep doing it over and
00:11:21
over but
00:11:22
uh if you if you've been just playing
00:11:24
well you just you know have kind of a
00:11:26
loose strategy against your opponent
00:11:28
i would suggest that you actually stick
00:11:29
to your game plan the one that you know
00:11:32
the closing game plan
00:11:33
that you have for yourself because you
00:11:35
know at 5'4 in the third set
00:11:37
it's not that much about your opponent
00:11:39
but about yourself especially if you're
00:11:41
serving
00:11:42
it comes down to your ability of closing
00:11:44
out the match so
00:11:46
i think it comes down to you you have to
00:11:48
assess the situation
00:11:50
but those are definitely some things
00:11:51
that you you need to consider if you
00:11:53
want to learn more about some other tips
00:11:55
that we have
00:11:56
you can watch this really cool video
00:11:57
career made when he's practicing
00:11:59
against the number 73 in the world
00:12:01
marcus gear on you can just watch the
00:12:03
video here
00:12:04
and he goes on he has some commentary
00:12:06
there he goes on about what
00:12:08
they're working on especially during the
00:12:10
match play
00:12:11
that's very valuable information people
00:12:13
have been enjoying that a lot
00:12:15
you can also check our website we got
00:12:16
plenty of articles with very
00:12:18
instructional information
00:12:19
so you can check that out but otherwise
00:12:21
i really appreciate you guys and
00:12:23
once again let us know in the comments
00:12:24
if there's anything you want us to work
00:12:27
on
