  • 00:01:26
    one sabbath
  • 00:01:28
he was going through the grain fields
  • 00:01:31
and as they made their way his disciples
  • 00:01:33
began to pluck heads of grain
  • 00:01:37
and the pharisees were saying to him
  • 00:01:39
    look
  • 00:01:40
why are they doing what is not lawful on
  • 00:01:43
    the sabbath
  • 00:01:45
    and he said to them
  • 00:01:47
have you never read what david did
  • 00:01:49
when he was in need and was hungry he
  • 00:01:52
and those who were with him
  • 00:01:53
how he entered the house of god in the
  • 00:01:55
time of abiathar the high priest
  • 00:01:58
and ate the bread of the presence which
  • 00:02:00
is not lawful for any but the priest to
  • 00:02:02
eat and also gave it to those who were
  • 00:02:04
    with him
  • 00:02:06
    and he said to them
  • 00:02:07
    the sabbath
  • 00:02:09
    was made for man
  • 00:02:11
    not man
  • 00:02:13
    for the sabbath
  • 00:02:15
so the son of man is lord even of
  • 00:02:18
    the sabbath
  • 00:02:21
a careful reading of the gospels will
  • 00:02:23
    show
  • 00:02:24
that one of the major controversies that
  • 00:02:26
centered around the person of jesus
  • 00:02:28
    christ
  • 00:02:29
    was his behavior
  • 00:02:31
on a particular day of the week
  • 00:02:35
that day of the week may not have much
  • 00:02:36
relevance to us gentiles but it is a day
  • 00:02:39
    of the week
  • 00:02:41
that was and still is a trademark for
  • 00:02:43
    the jewish people
  • 00:02:45
that day as you heard many times just in
  • 00:02:48
our reading is known as the sabbath
  • 00:02:51
which in the hebrew simply means to rest
  • 00:02:53
    or to cease
  • 00:02:55
it was on the sabbath which defines
  • 00:02:58
    friday sunset to saturday sunset
  • 00:03:01
according to jewish law that some of the
  • 00:03:03
most memorable miracles of jesus took
  • 00:03:06
    place
  • 00:03:08
but it was also on that same day that
  • 00:03:09
    the ever-present pharisees
  • 00:03:12
manifested the depths of the cruelty and
  • 00:03:15
    coldness of their heart
  • 00:03:17
especially as it contrasted to the warm
  • 00:03:20
compassion of jesus christ toward people
  • 00:03:24
it's so strange to think how a day that
  • 00:03:26
    was divinely ordained by god
  • 00:03:31
    to cause reverential meditation and
  • 00:03:33
    refreshment from work
  • 00:03:35
    made these pharisees
  • 00:03:37
    so intensely vexed
  • 00:03:40
    and frustrated
  • 00:03:43
and it is in this teaching that you will
  • 00:03:44
    see why
  • 00:03:46
why why was it that these pharisees were
  • 00:03:48
    so caught up
  • 00:03:50
in responding to something that was holy
  • 00:03:53
and for the good of man
  • 00:03:56
    but instead became a burden
  • 00:03:59
    and something to be dreaded
  • 00:04:02
and it's going to be a lesson for you
  • 00:04:04
and i to understand that we can take
  • 00:04:05
    god's word and misapply it
  • 00:04:07
we can take god's word and
  • 00:04:09
reinvent the purpose of it and bring
  • 00:04:12
harm to ourselves and to others
  • 00:04:14
but more than that it is the activity of
  • 00:04:16
jesus on the sabbath that will bring
  • 00:04:18
even greater support to his nature and
  • 00:04:20
    character
  • 00:04:21
it was on the sabbath that the pharisees
  • 00:04:24
wanted to flex their empty religion
  • 00:04:27
their performance of piety but it was
  • 00:04:29
    also on the sabbath
  • 00:04:30
and many occasions that jesus proved
  • 00:04:32
that he was who he said he was
  • 00:04:34
    god in the flesh
  • 00:04:36
and as you as you behold that this
  • 00:04:37
aftertune may it pull on your heart to
  • 00:04:39
worship and adore him to a greater
  • 00:04:41
    degree
  • 00:04:42
but on this particular sabbath that we
  • 00:04:44
just read the the critical pharisees
  • 00:04:46
    vocalized their unjustified
  • 00:04:49
concerns not because jesus performed a
  • 00:04:51
miracle in fact jesus wasn't the direct
  • 00:04:54
object of their scorn it was his
  • 00:04:56
    disciples and what they did
  • 00:04:59
    and these disciples
  • 00:05:00
    just ate some grain
  • 00:05:03
    but that was significant to
  • 00:05:05
    the pharisees these pseudo spiritual
  • 00:05:07
spies were flustered by the sight of
  • 00:05:10
these men snacking on some grain as they
  • 00:05:13
    walked along a path
  • 00:05:15
and here's what you and i are going to
  • 00:05:16
do this afternoon the same way that
  • 00:05:17
these disciples walk by a specific path
  • 00:05:20
in order to nourish themselves by
  • 00:05:22
    receiving some kind of
  • 00:05:24
    strength from these little nuggets
  • 00:05:27
you and i also as we glean through this
  • 00:05:28
    passage are going to
  • 00:05:31
pluck some truths from these verses and
  • 00:05:33
    receive nourishment
  • 00:05:35
    for our souls
  • 00:05:37
what do we see here in verse 23 jesus
  • 00:05:39
was making his way to a certain
  • 00:05:41
destination and we are told that his
  • 00:05:43
disciples accompanied him and as they
  • 00:05:45
accompanied him they were just pulling
  • 00:05:47
    some grain
  • 00:05:49
as they passed by some fields
  • 00:05:52
and matthew is more specific with this
  • 00:05:54
exact scene by telling us that they were
  • 00:05:56
hungry so they plucked the grain so that
  • 00:05:58
they could eat and i cannot help but
  • 00:06:00
even at this point draw a simple
  • 00:06:02
principle that will hopefully help you
  • 00:06:04
    and i
  • 00:06:05
as we commit ourselves to following
  • 00:06:06
jesus these apostles and training as
  • 00:06:09
    they trail behind their rabbi
  • 00:06:12
show us that living for the lord jesus
  • 00:06:16
serving his purposes and his cause
  • 00:06:19
    does not guarantee luxury or
  • 00:06:22
    uninterrupted physical convenience
  • 00:06:27
these disciples not too long ago were
  • 00:06:29
    feasting
  • 00:06:30
    at matthew's house
  • 00:06:32
    enjoying a banquet
  • 00:06:35
in just a few short hours later a few
  • 00:06:38
    days perhaps
  • 00:06:40
    here they are
  • 00:06:41
taking some kernels rubbing it in their
  • 00:06:43
hands and trying to make the most out of
  • 00:06:45
    it
  • 00:06:47
    when we follow the lord
  • 00:06:49
    we have to understand
  • 00:06:51
that it is not always convenient to our
  • 00:06:53
    flesh
  • 00:06:54
it does not guarantee that everything
  • 00:06:56
will be brought before us on a silver
  • 00:06:58
platter and that we will have no
  • 00:06:59
discomfort or no test or no
  • 00:07:02
    concern
  • 00:07:04
    at least immediately
  • 00:07:06
what i see here with these disciples is
  • 00:07:08
a perfect example of quiet contentment
  • 00:07:10
    in jesus christ
  • 00:07:12
no complaints no squeaks no squeals
  • 00:07:15
here they are walking along with jesus
  • 00:07:17
and just enjoying what has been provided
  • 00:07:19
    for them in the natural
  • 00:07:22
and there are some days where we will
  • 00:07:24
know feasts and there are some days
  • 00:07:25
where we will know some fast and fast
  • 00:07:27
that we do not intend to explore
  • 00:07:29
    willingly
  • 00:07:31
but look at these disciples i love the
  • 00:07:33
fact that there is silence on their part
  • 00:07:34
there are no complaints from them
  • 00:07:36
because their rations look much more
  • 00:07:38
different than it was just a few days
  • 00:07:40
    ago
  • 00:07:41
the celebration that they enjoyed in
  • 00:07:43
    matthew's home
  • 00:07:45
and here's how i take it as long as
  • 00:07:47
christ is with us it doesn't matter what
  • 00:07:48
    is before us
  • 00:07:50
as long as christ is our portion it
  • 00:07:53
doesn't matter what kind of portion we
  • 00:07:54
have in the natural any portion is a
  • 00:07:57
full portion when christ is our true
  • 00:07:59
    portion
  • 00:08:01
and so there's such a plainness about
  • 00:08:03
    this scene
  • 00:08:04
    here they are just
  • 00:08:06
gazing and grazing while they walk in
  • 00:08:08
the shadow of their savior and the
  • 00:08:10
simplicity is so beautiful because what
  • 00:08:13
we look here and see is that the lord
  • 00:08:16
and following him does not mean that we
  • 00:08:18
    will experience a series
  • 00:08:21
    of supernatural events continually
  • 00:08:25
encouraged that the same way the lord
  • 00:08:27
was in the presence of his disciples in
  • 00:08:29
the grain fields so is he with you and i
  • 00:08:33
when we are going through seasons of
  • 00:08:35
what may be ordinary or mundane
  • 00:08:39
you see jesus knew that his servants
  • 00:08:40
were hungry he can see it despite the
  • 00:08:43
fact that he was omniscient he could see
  • 00:08:45
it and jesus doesn't take it upon
  • 00:08:47
himself to perform some kind of a
  • 00:08:48
miracle instead he allows his followers
  • 00:08:53
to pluck some grain to silence their
  • 00:08:55
grumbling bellies and he was just as
  • 00:08:58
present with them then as he would be
  • 00:09:00
when he would feed the five thousand
  • 00:09:04
and so christ is with us
  • 00:09:06
if i can use this word
  • 00:09:08
    in our snacking
  • 00:09:11
just as much as in our serving
  • 00:09:14
that his watchful eye is strong
  • 00:09:17
even what seems to be normal
  • 00:09:20
    routine
  • 00:09:21
    mundane
  • 00:09:23
just as much as it would be when we see
  • 00:09:24
him do miracles in our lives
  • 00:09:27
and may we not reserve our praise to him
  • 00:09:30
only when we are promoted in an unusual
  • 00:09:32
way or only when we seem to have this
  • 00:09:35
supernatural opportunity open for us in
  • 00:09:38
    our favor
  • 00:09:40
    because his grace spreads out
  • 00:09:43
and extends far beyond the undeniable
  • 00:09:46
interventions that he provides for us
  • 00:09:49
see what these disciples are doing is
  • 00:09:51
what any ordinary jew would do it was a
  • 00:09:53
common practice but even though this
  • 00:09:56
this is something that we would dismiss
  • 00:09:57
as just going to the gas station to pick
  • 00:10:00
up a little thing because you're hungry
  • 00:10:01
and your commute was a little longer
  • 00:10:03
    than you thought it was
  • 00:10:04
    these disciples
  • 00:10:06
are experiencing and are recipients of
  • 00:10:09
    the goodness of god
  • 00:10:11
even in the plucking of the grain
  • 00:10:13
not just filling the baskets after a
  • 00:10:15
    miraculous provision of just
  • 00:10:17
a few pieces of bread and fish into
  • 00:10:19
feeding the multitudes even in that
  • 00:10:22
    and the reason is because
  • 00:10:24
what these men are doing was only
  • 00:10:26
possible because god made it possible he
  • 00:10:29
actually made it law he actually
  • 00:10:31
    codified it through moses
  • 00:10:33
so you're going to have to hear this
  • 00:10:35
    verse and understand that understanding
  • 00:10:37
this verse helps us see and understand
  • 00:10:39
the rest of the text in deuteronomy 23
  • 00:10:44
    25
  • 00:10:45
god gave instructions to the israelites
  • 00:10:47
and he said an interesting thing in this
  • 00:10:49
    verse
  • 00:10:50
if you go into your neighbor's standing
  • 00:10:53
    grain you may pluck
  • 00:10:55
the ears with your hand but you shall
  • 00:10:57
not put a sickle to your neighbor's
  • 00:10:59
    standing grain
  • 00:11:01
so he actually created a law that these
  • 00:11:04
men were fulfilling that they were
  • 00:11:05
    walking in faithfully
  • 00:11:07
and this was just one facet of
  • 00:11:10
the welfare system in israel not not a
  • 00:11:12
    system that makes you lazy
  • 00:11:15
but one that gives means to strengthen
  • 00:11:16
    the hungry traveler
  • 00:11:18
while at the same time not significantly
  • 00:11:20
    stripping somebody's hard earned profit
  • 00:11:24
    away from them
  • 00:11:26
and though no law exists like this for
  • 00:11:28
you and i in the new covenant does not
  • 00:11:30
    this verse
  • 00:11:32
show us and give us a glimpse
  • 00:11:34
of the mindfulness of god for you and me
  • 00:11:37
he actually cares about going from point
  • 00:11:40
a to point b and making sure that your
  • 00:11:42
    belly is full
  • 00:11:44
and so he creates this law that is fair
  • 00:11:46
    and just
  • 00:11:48
and it shows his love for the israelites
  • 00:11:50
just as much as when he reigned manna
  • 00:11:52
from heaven for 40 years a recurring
  • 00:11:56
miracle day by day his love is just as
  • 00:11:59
    strong
  • 00:12:00
in this law as it was in the miracle
  • 00:12:03
and what am i trying to propose to you
  • 00:12:05
and i may we love him in the natural not
  • 00:12:07
    just in the
  • 00:12:08
supernatural may we praise him and
  • 00:12:10
credit him for his goodness in what
  • 00:12:13
seems to be something that his
  • 00:12:14
fingerprints are not on when in fact he
  • 00:12:17
is the supplier of all our good
  • 00:12:20
he is the permitter of all the things
  • 00:12:22
    that we enjoy
  • 00:12:24
    and so i'm refreshed by
  • 00:12:27
    this visual
  • 00:12:28
of jesus walking i don't know how it
  • 00:12:30
look was it one line where they spread
  • 00:12:32
    across
  • 00:12:33
    the field
  • 00:12:34
there's jesus walking and his disciples
  • 00:12:36
plucking and maybe one disciple is
  • 00:12:38
trying to jokingly take the grain out of
  • 00:12:39
    the other hand
  • 00:12:41
    of another disciple
  • 00:12:43
but something happens because what's so
  • 00:12:45
    beautiful
  • 00:12:46
in this scene what what showcases the
  • 00:12:48
goodness of god and even encourages us
  • 00:12:50
to know silent satisfaction as we follow
  • 00:12:54
jesus no matter what's in our hand
  • 00:12:56
was something that was totally different
  • 00:12:58
in the sight of these pharisees
  • 00:13:02
a sharp accusation arose in those fields
  • 00:13:04
    i don't know where they were i don't
  • 00:13:05
know if they were in the field spying
  • 00:13:07
    it's a pretty pathetic sight
  • 00:13:09
but this group of religious elite
  • 00:13:11
thought that they found something that
  • 00:13:12
    would disqualify the credibility of
  • 00:13:14
    jesus's closest students
  • 00:13:17
    and so they say
  • 00:13:18
    look
  • 00:13:20
why are they doing what is not lawful on
  • 00:13:22
the sabbath well you and i just heard it
  • 00:13:24
in deuteronomy what they are doing is
  • 00:13:27
    lawful
  • 00:13:28
it was permitted it was granted there
  • 00:13:29
    was a green light
  • 00:13:31
but their issue was not so much of the
  • 00:13:33
plucking and the eating per se as much
  • 00:13:35
as it was that they were doing this on
  • 00:13:38
    the sabbath
  • 00:13:41
    were they right
  • 00:13:43
were the disciples breaking the law
  • 00:13:46
were they working on a day that was
  • 00:13:48
    calling for rest
  • 00:13:51
    the short answer
  • 00:13:52
    no
  • 00:13:54
    no
  • 00:13:56
you and i should be acquainted with the
  • 00:13:57
pharisees enough to understand that they
  • 00:14:00
    were masters
  • 00:14:02
    and notorious for taking man-made
  • 00:14:05
tradition and elevating it to the degree
  • 00:14:08
that it would eclipse the simplicity and
  • 00:14:10
    the clarity of god's word
  • 00:14:12
and if this is saying anything it is
  • 00:14:15
    showing how their tradition
  • 00:14:17
    mangled
  • 00:14:19
it absolutely tampered with something as
  • 00:14:21
holy as the sabbath until it became
  • 00:14:24
    unrecognizable
  • 00:14:26
until it lost all its life-giving value
  • 00:14:29
until it was marred into something that
  • 00:14:31
was hideous instead of something that
  • 00:14:32
    was holy
  • 00:14:34
    legalism tends to do that
  • 00:14:37
you see if there was something that
  • 00:14:39
these pharisees were doing on the
  • 00:14:40
sabbath is that they utilized it
  • 00:14:42
    as a weekly platform to
  • 00:14:45
    pump their pride
  • 00:14:48
and so week after week these men would
  • 00:14:50
not only impose their regulations and
  • 00:14:53
their rituals that were out of bounds of
  • 00:14:55
the bible but they would they would use
  • 00:14:57
this time to also police the population
  • 00:15:01
    and to
  • 00:15:03
criticize and to point out and to
  • 00:15:04
    disqualify men standing with god
  • 00:15:07
based on the fact that they are not
  • 00:15:09
adhering to their own rules and so you
  • 00:15:12
can imagine how this day was generally
  • 00:15:14
dreaded by the israelite we don't want
  • 00:15:16
the sabbath to come because out come the
  • 00:15:19
    cockroaches
  • 00:15:20
here come the pharisees sniffing and
  • 00:15:22
looking and we see a snippet of it even
  • 00:15:25
here i mean here's jesus traveling with
  • 00:15:27
    his disciples and upcoming these
  • 00:15:28
pharisees popping their head out of the
  • 00:15:30
grains and saying ha ha look look what
  • 00:15:32
    they're doing write it down
  • 00:15:36
and instead of it being a day of rest
  • 00:15:37
for god's people under the old covenant
  • 00:15:40
it was a day of unrealistic expectations
  • 00:15:43
    in the name of
  • 00:15:44
    righteousness quotation marks
  • 00:15:47
oh this is a sad thing
  • 00:15:50
    all these rules
  • 00:15:52
all these ideas conjured up by
  • 00:15:55
men who think they are pious do we have
  • 00:15:57
a glimpse do we have any idea of what
  • 00:15:59
    kind of these
  • 00:16:00
rules look like yes we do the mishnah
  • 00:16:04
which is really just a historical book
  • 00:16:06
of a collection of the jewish oral
  • 00:16:07
traditions shows us actually just some
  • 00:16:10
of the rules that were implemented on
  • 00:16:12
this day the mission is not a divine
  • 00:16:14
    book
  • 00:16:15
it's a historical book and they have a
  • 00:16:17
    section on the sabbath
  • 00:16:19
and it is through that that we can see
  • 00:16:22
what it was that the pharisees were
  • 00:16:23
    trying to implement so strongly
  • 00:16:26
so on that list there are 39 works that
  • 00:16:28
    were prohibited forbidden that would
  • 00:16:31
violate their idea of the sabbath and
  • 00:16:34
there are some things there that were
  • 00:16:36
obvious types of labor like hunting or
  • 00:16:39
    plowing
  • 00:16:41
but then as you read on you realize that
  • 00:16:42
    the category of work included
  • 00:16:45
    hard to believe practices
  • 00:16:48
for example a legal work would
  • 00:16:50
constitute writing more than one letter
  • 00:16:52
    on a on a page
  • 00:16:55
or god forbid you erase two letters
  • 00:16:58
    it would mean
  • 00:17:00
    tying a knot
  • 00:17:02
    untying a knot
  • 00:17:03
    sewing more than one stitch
  • 00:17:06
    cleaning clothes
  • 00:17:08
walking a certain amount of steps
  • 00:17:13
    and other paralyzing practices
  • 00:17:16
so with that in view it's no wonder that
  • 00:17:18
the pharisees were shaken by the sight
  • 00:17:20
of the fact that these disciples were
  • 00:17:22
    plucking grain
  • 00:17:24
because it's highly possible that in
  • 00:17:25
this one scene alone what they estimated
  • 00:17:27
was that these disciples were breaking
  • 00:17:30
the law because they were traveling too
  • 00:17:32
    far
  • 00:17:35
    and they were working
  • 00:17:36
yes this is work according to the
  • 00:17:39
    pharisees
  • 00:17:41
the plucking the removing of the shell
  • 00:17:42
the blowing of the chaff equated
  • 00:17:45
    harvesting
  • 00:17:47
    and threshing
  • 00:17:48
    and winnowing
  • 00:17:51
    and so they said
  • 00:17:53
    you're working
  • 00:17:55
you're working sounds ridiculous is it
  • 00:17:57
not may i propose to you
  • 00:17:59
that in this day today the same spirit
  • 00:18:02
is at work in many ministries
  • 00:18:06
that might be foreign to you
  • 00:18:09
but just just look out into the horizon
  • 00:18:12
stay in this thing long enough
  • 00:18:14
open your networks and converse with
  • 00:18:16
others who are part of different
  • 00:18:17
    denominations or different network of
  • 00:18:19
churches and what you'll realize is
  • 00:18:21
    there are some churches
  • 00:18:23
    who have required specific measurements
  • 00:18:25
    of clothing
  • 00:18:28
not modesty i mean here comes the ruler
  • 00:18:31
and let's see how long the sleeve is
  • 00:18:34
let's see how far down the dress goes
  • 00:18:37
the same people will condemn the
  • 00:18:38
    application of cosmetics
  • 00:18:40
    on a woman's face or on a woman's body
  • 00:18:44
    who demand
  • 00:18:45
    limited technology
  • 00:18:48
    in
  • 00:18:48
    each family's home
  • 00:18:52
    and who exalt these rules
  • 00:18:55
    which have
  • 00:18:56
    zero benefits to true sanctification
  • 00:19:02
and the sad part is people eat this
  • 00:19:03
stuff up it's attractive to some
  • 00:19:06
to some the temptation is lawlessness i
  • 00:19:08
believe that's the greater issue with
  • 00:19:10
american christianity but to others it
  • 00:19:12
    is legalism
  • 00:19:14
and what you have is people who who live
  • 00:19:16
their life in this way and who adopt
  • 00:19:17
these strict observances to these rigid
  • 00:19:20
rituals because they think this is what
  • 00:19:22
    pleases god
  • 00:19:24
this is what puts a smile on his face
  • 00:19:29
would you like to know how the holy
  • 00:19:30
spirit saw these pharisees would you
  • 00:19:32
like to know what he perceived would you
  • 00:19:33
like to know what concerns him the same
  • 00:19:35
pharisees who seem so disciplined who
  • 00:19:38
seemed so devoted to the cause of god
  • 00:19:41
on one of the teachings of jesus where
  • 00:19:44
    the pharisees were in attendance
  • 00:19:46
he taught about money and the holy
  • 00:19:48
spirit gives us a commentary on
  • 00:19:50
something hidden apart from this we
  • 00:19:52
would not have known we would have
  • 00:19:53
probably assumed but the holy spirit
  • 00:19:54
    exposes these same men
  • 00:19:57
who ran around bullying people with
  • 00:19:59
their standards turn with me to luke
  • 00:20:01
    chapter 16
  • 00:20:03
and look at this short verse with me
  • 00:20:12
    in luke 16 14-15
  • 00:20:18
    we are told
  • 00:20:22
    the pharisees
  • 00:20:26
    who were lovers of money
  • 00:20:30
heard all these things and they
  • 00:20:31
    ridiculed him
  • 00:20:32
    and he said to them
  • 00:20:34
you are those who justify yourselves
  • 00:20:36
before men but god knows your hearts
  • 00:20:40
for what is exalted among men is an
  • 00:20:42
abomination in the sight of god
  • 00:20:45
    beneath the rituals
  • 00:20:47
under the holy garments and quotation
  • 00:20:49
marks the public prayers the constant
  • 00:20:52
    fasting the nagging criticism
  • 00:20:55
and the fault finding in the name of
  • 00:20:57
    holiness
  • 00:20:58
    was a burning
  • 00:21:00
    infatuation
  • 00:21:02
    for money
  • 00:21:04
the god that most people worship today
  • 00:21:08
these pharisees might have been able to
  • 00:21:09
fool others and they might have thought
  • 00:21:11
and believed that they were fooling god
  • 00:21:13
but this verse proves listen to me this
  • 00:21:15
afternoon my people my brethren my
  • 00:21:18
sisters my fellow followers of christ
  • 00:21:24
what this verse proves is that the lord
  • 00:21:26
looks past our daily and weekly
  • 00:21:28
performances and the only thing he
  • 00:21:30
considers is what lives in the deepest
  • 00:21:33
chambers of your heart and mind
  • 00:21:38
what a scathing statement jesus makes
  • 00:21:43
for what is exalted among men is an
  • 00:21:45
abomination in the sight of god can you
  • 00:21:47
imagine he's speaking about their empty
  • 00:21:49
religion this might not shock you until
  • 00:21:51
you do a comprehensive study in the word
  • 00:21:53
of god to see what is under the category
  • 00:21:55
    of abomination
  • 00:21:57
    like pervert sexual practices
  • 00:21:59
and yet there is a high spot for empty
  • 00:22:02
    religion under that condemning category
  • 00:22:05
and imagine imagine doing all these
  • 00:22:07
things for for the sake of people seeing
  • 00:22:09
how spiritual you are and god sees it as
  • 00:22:13
a heap of stench and smell
  • 00:22:19
i cannot help but move past this text
  • 00:22:21
    without considering the thought
  • 00:22:25
    not just
  • 00:22:26
not just for those who might be
  • 00:22:28
    pharisaical
  • 00:22:30
    who have magnified tradition and
  • 00:22:32
    magnified outward behavior
  • 00:22:34
and not what god puts weightier
  • 00:22:37
    emphasis on
  • 00:22:39
but even for us in our performances in
  • 00:22:41
in our service to god what does it
  • 00:22:43
    matter
  • 00:22:45
what benefit is it if there's no spirit
  • 00:22:47
    inspired pulse behind it
  • 00:22:51
god forbid that we would go through the
  • 00:22:53
    mechanics of christianity with
  • 00:22:56
    hollowness
  • 00:22:58
    with emptiness
  • 00:23:00
with no connection to this pleasing my
  • 00:23:02
lord from a position of being saved by
  • 00:23:05
    his grace yes
  • 00:23:08
and i can't help but look at this verse
  • 00:23:09
and this is what came to mind when
  • 00:23:11
reading it oh lord you saw their hearts
  • 00:23:14
    you saw their loves
  • 00:23:17
you didn't see the length of their
  • 00:23:18
beards and their garments you didn't see
  • 00:23:21
the lengths of the prayers you didn't
  • 00:23:22
see the length of their fasting you saw
  • 00:23:25
what they loved and this is what you
  • 00:23:28
look for oh if god were to come into
  • 00:23:31
    your heart
  • 00:23:33
and pull it out in the open
  • 00:23:36
what kind of love would he find there
  • 00:23:40
what would he see in that heart
  • 00:23:43
    what would he discover
  • 00:23:46
    pass through all the practices
  • 00:23:49
and all the performance if god were to
  • 00:23:51
come just to see the pulse of your heart
  • 00:23:55
    what would he see
  • 00:23:59
is there a love for him
  • 00:24:03
or are we just empty performers
  • 00:24:05
    convincing ourselves and others that
  • 00:24:06
    we're okay
  • 00:24:08
    everything is fine
  • 00:24:10
    what do our affections
  • 00:24:12
    beat for
  • 00:24:14
what directions are our hearts set
  • 00:24:16
toward who is it that we are the most
  • 00:24:19
    captivated by
  • 00:24:21
and who is it that we are the most
  • 00:24:22
fearful of disappointing and grieving oh
  • 00:24:25
would he see the reflection of his own
  • 00:24:27
face when he pulls out that heart
  • 00:24:30
and looks at it to see what kind of
  • 00:24:32
loves we have in this life
  • 00:24:34
and may he by his grace keep that love
  • 00:24:37
    alive for him
  • 00:24:39
until this heart is transformed in the
  • 00:24:42
    resurrection
  • 00:24:43
only by his grace able to perfectly love
  • 00:24:45
    him for all of eternity
  • 00:24:48
and so we come back to our attacks in
  • 00:24:50
    mark 2
  • 00:24:52
to see jesus's answer to the allegation
  • 00:24:55
made by the pharisees and he would do so
  • 00:24:57
    by masterfully referencing a scripture
  • 00:25:00
you want to deal with legalistic people
  • 00:25:02
go to the bible you want to deal with
  • 00:25:04
people who love tradition go to the
  • 00:25:06
bible and we read it but we can read it
  • 00:25:08
    again
  • 00:25:10
in verse 25 and he said to them have you
  • 00:25:12
never read what david did when he was in
  • 00:25:14
need and was hungry he and those who
  • 00:25:15
were with him how he entered the house
  • 00:25:17
of god in the time of abiathar the high
  • 00:25:20
priest and ate the bread of the presence
  • 00:25:22
which is not lawful for any but the
  • 00:25:24
priest to eat and also gave it to those
  • 00:25:26
    who are with him
  • 00:25:27
it's a very simple story if you were
  • 00:25:29
with us on fridays we covered this in
  • 00:25:30
first samuel we're in second samuel now
  • 00:25:33
it's the story of david who had to flee
  • 00:25:36
his home his work his family
  • 00:25:39
because of a sudden exile because saul
  • 00:25:41
turned on him and was ready to kill him
  • 00:25:43
and because he had no time to prepare he
  • 00:25:45
comes to the house of god empty-handed
  • 00:25:47
and he seeks something to eat because he
  • 00:25:49
is hungry him and his men who
  • 00:25:51
    accompanied him
  • 00:25:52
and so he asked the priest if there's
  • 00:25:54
anything for him and the priest said
  • 00:25:55
there's nothing here but the holy bread
  • 00:25:58
the holy bread was something designated
  • 00:26:00
for the priest alone to eat
  • 00:26:02
it was to be there on the table of show
  • 00:26:04
bread and once they would recycle the
  • 00:26:06
bread with fresh hot bread every week
  • 00:26:08
they would eat the old bread that's what
  • 00:26:10
    david was looking for
  • 00:26:12
and it was granted to him
  • 00:26:15
now that simple story may seem
  • 00:26:18
    straightforward but the question is
  • 00:26:20
why is jesus alluding to it out of all
  • 00:26:22
the things why this story and let me
  • 00:26:25
give you what perhaps you grew up
  • 00:26:27
understanding it to me if you grew up in
  • 00:26:29
the church let me give you the most
  • 00:26:32
    popular interpretation
  • 00:26:33
it seems that people think that jesus is
  • 00:26:36
by pointing to david providing an
  • 00:26:39
    illustration to promote
  • 00:26:42
    a principle of mercy
  • 00:26:44
    meaning what
  • 00:26:46
    after the pharisees condemn the
  • 00:26:47
disciples the lord points to david to
  • 00:26:50
    teach that under certain circumstances
  • 00:26:53
    god is willing
  • 00:26:55
    for ceremonial laws
  • 00:26:57
for rules to be set aside for the sake
  • 00:27:00
of meeting a human need it's a lesson on
  • 00:27:04
    compassion
  • 00:27:05
    the idea here is that
  • 00:27:07
    observing regulations is not more
  • 00:27:09
    important than providing assistance in
  • 00:27:11
emergency situations like david was in
  • 00:27:16
and even if our help means that we need
  • 00:27:18
    to
  • 00:27:19
bend the commands of god a little bit
  • 00:27:22
    then let's bring it about
  • 00:27:25
so you can imagine how a text like this
  • 00:27:27
is often referred to to support the
  • 00:27:29
    notion of
  • 00:27:31
    situational ethics
  • 00:27:34
all that means is that under unique
  • 00:27:36
situations it would be acceptable to
  • 00:27:38
    commit
  • 00:27:39
if we're honest what would be known as a
  • 00:27:41
sin in order to promote a greater good
  • 00:27:46
so that's what jesus is teaching look
  • 00:27:49
david did what was wrong he wasn't
  • 00:27:50
punished for it because there was a need
  • 00:27:53
so why are you pharisees getting all
  • 00:27:54
flustered when the disciples here are
  • 00:27:56
just doing the same thing they're eating
  • 00:27:59
    okay if it
  • 00:28:00
confuses what it means to be not working
  • 00:28:02
on the sabbath what's the big deal
  • 00:28:06
personally i do not believe that's what
  • 00:28:07
    jesus is teaching
  • 00:28:11
and i may have stepped on some toes but
  • 00:28:13
    would you bear with me
  • 00:28:15
because i've heard this from many people
  • 00:28:16
    myself and
  • 00:28:18
as i looked further into it i realized
  • 00:28:20
that perhaps that is not jesus's
  • 00:28:22
main point maybe that's not even his
  • 00:28:24
    point at all
  • 00:28:26
    because
  • 00:28:27
    this would make sense
  • 00:28:30
    this message
  • 00:28:32
    would fit
  • 00:28:33
if the disciples actually broke the law
  • 00:28:37
    but they didn't
  • 00:28:40
    they were guiltless
  • 00:28:42
but look how jesus speaks about david in
  • 00:28:44
verse 26 how he entered the house of god
  • 00:28:47
in the time of abyatha the high priest
  • 00:28:49
and ate the bread of the presence which
  • 00:28:52
is not lawful for any but the priests to
  • 00:28:56
    eat
  • 00:28:58
so what david did was a clear violation
  • 00:29:01
    of god's law
  • 00:29:03
he did break it it's undeniable
  • 00:29:05
that alone should cause us to at least
  • 00:29:08
    question the popular understanding and
  • 00:29:11
    interpretation of this passage
  • 00:29:14
why would jesus use a guilty man to
  • 00:29:17
    justify those who are guiltless
  • 00:29:22
    definitely not to promote situational
  • 00:29:24
    ethics
  • 00:29:25
    but i present to you
  • 00:29:28
    the possibility and the strongest
  • 00:29:30
understanding that he is calling out the
  • 00:29:32
    inconsistency of the pharisees
  • 00:29:35
in other words think about it this way
  • 00:29:38
as jesus brings about david he is not
  • 00:29:41
    justifying david's
  • 00:29:43
    trespass
  • 00:29:45
he is not justifying an idea that god
  • 00:29:47
winked at this whole thing it turned
  • 00:29:48
back because david was hungry and you
  • 00:29:50
know okay if we have to ignore the law
  • 00:29:51
for him to be fed then we'll do that
  • 00:29:53
that's not what's happening here this is
  • 00:29:55
jesus using the story of david to corner
  • 00:29:57
    the pharisees in their hypocrisy
  • 00:30:01
here's how the argument goes are you
  • 00:30:03
    willing to overlook
  • 00:30:06
what david did and how he broke the law
  • 00:30:09
while you at the same time are
  • 00:30:10
    condemning my disciples for breaking
  • 00:30:12
    your human tradition
  • 00:30:15
    do you see
  • 00:30:17
it helps to go to matthew's version to
  • 00:30:18
    see this
  • 00:30:19
expound it so go to matthew chapter 12
  • 00:30:22
    and look with me here
  • 00:30:26
    in verse 5.
  • 00:30:29
and the verse is proceeding he says the
  • 00:30:31
same thing that he does here in mark two
  • 00:30:33
he brings up david but we come to
  • 00:30:35
matthew 12 he builds on that point and
  • 00:30:37
    he brings up another example
  • 00:30:40
and so in matthew 12 5 notice what jesus
  • 00:30:42
    says
  • 00:30:45
have you not read in the law how the
  • 00:30:47
    sabbath
  • 00:30:48
on the sabbath the priests in the temple
  • 00:30:51
profane the sabbath and are guiltless
  • 00:30:54
so what is he saying here
  • 00:30:56
even the strictest pharisee wouldn't see
  • 00:30:58
    the priest guilty
  • 00:31:01
on the sabbath for performing more work
  • 00:31:03
than any other day of the week for
  • 00:31:05
    killing animals preparing the sacrifices
  • 00:31:07
    performing their duties
  • 00:31:09
but according to their laws the priest
  • 00:31:11
    should be guilty
  • 00:31:14
the priest should be hey according to
  • 00:31:16
    your standards
  • 00:31:17
    the priests themselves should be
  • 00:31:18
    indicted
  • 00:31:20
and yet they are quick to come to the
  • 00:31:22
disciples in their modest grain picking
  • 00:31:25
and to criticize them and condemn them
  • 00:31:28
something that took much less effort and
  • 00:31:30
work than what the priest did on the
  • 00:31:31
    sabbath
  • 00:31:33
    now
  • 00:31:34
some might protest those who know their
  • 00:31:36
bibles well and know this story well who
  • 00:31:38
might have used this story to justify
  • 00:31:40
certain things and so the protest says
  • 00:31:42
    brother
  • 00:31:44
jesus quotes hosea in chapter 12 of
  • 00:31:46
    matthew verse 7.
  • 00:31:48
and what do we see in matthew 12 7
  • 00:31:51
jesus says and if you had known what
  • 00:31:52
    this means
  • 00:31:54
i desire mercy and not sacrifice
  • 00:31:58
you would not have condemned the
  • 00:31:59
    guiltless
  • 00:32:01
you see god is trying to show us that
  • 00:32:03
    sometimes the most compassionate thing
  • 00:32:04
to do is to meet a need even though we
  • 00:32:07
ignored a law that might hinder that
  • 00:32:09
mercy from being extended you see god is
  • 00:32:12
promoting mercy mercy's so great that it
  • 00:32:15
exceeds above law keeping and rule
  • 00:32:18
    observing
  • 00:32:21
but is that how jesus is applying hosea
  • 00:32:25
is that is again is that what jesus is
  • 00:32:27
doing here is he trying to
  • 00:32:29
make a case for situational ethics
  • 00:32:32
all you have to do is read the verse
  • 00:32:33
again in verse 7 very carefully to see
  • 00:32:35
no he is not that's not his point
  • 00:32:38
look again and if you have known what
  • 00:32:40
this means i desire mercy and not
  • 00:32:42
sacrifice you would not have condemned
  • 00:32:45
    the guiltless
  • 00:32:47
    that's the main point that's what he's
  • 00:32:49
    trying to drive at
  • 00:32:51
    you are condemning the guiltless
  • 00:32:56
and by quoting hosea he's actually
  • 00:32:59
    exposing how merciless their traditions
  • 00:33:02
    are
  • 00:33:04
    and so he says here
  • 00:33:07
i desire mercy and not sacrifice you're
  • 00:33:10
condemning the guiltless that's how we
  • 00:33:11
know the disciples were guiltless and
  • 00:33:13
you're doing this with your supposed
  • 00:33:15
    justification that your your observance
  • 00:33:18
your strict standards are some kind of a
  • 00:33:22
    sacrifice to god
  • 00:33:26
when in fact they are merciless you are
  • 00:33:27
    merciless god desires mercy
  • 00:33:32
    but as we heard
  • 00:33:36
    loveless spiritual sacrifice especially
  • 00:33:38
    when it violates and
  • 00:33:39
    contradicts his word
  • 00:33:41
    is an abomination
  • 00:33:44
so understand let me say this again
  • 00:33:45
    jesus is using david
  • 00:33:47
as an argument to expose the hypocrisy
  • 00:33:50
of the pharisees who were willing to run
  • 00:33:51
around with their traditions and hit
  • 00:33:53
people over the head when they would not
  • 00:33:55
dare do that to the priest who worked
  • 00:33:57
just as hard if not twice as hard on
  • 00:33:59
that day and david their beloved hero
  • 00:34:02
    who actually broke god's law
  • 00:34:05
let me pause and say this at this point
  • 00:34:07
this is an example for us to remember
  • 00:34:08
something so crucial and it is to
  • 00:34:10
rightly divide the word of god
  • 00:34:14
to rightly divide the word of god lest
  • 00:34:15
we be found guilty promoting legalism
  • 00:34:17
like these pharisees or lest we make the
  • 00:34:19
    mistake
  • 00:34:20
of making some room for lawlessness by
  • 00:34:23
    misunderstanding
  • 00:34:24
    the teachings of jesus christ
  • 00:34:28
and legalism and lawlessness thrive on
  • 00:34:31
    the same malpractice
  • 00:34:34
if you want to know how these things
  • 00:34:35
grow and how they become strong and how
  • 00:34:37
they make way in people's lives and
  • 00:34:38
    ministries it's actually found in
  • 00:34:40
    matthew 12. jesus
  • 00:34:42
in two different verses in the same
  • 00:34:45
    confrontation with these pharisees says
  • 00:34:47
in verse 3 and verse 5 have you not read
  • 00:34:52
have you not read have you not read what
  • 00:34:54
the law says have you not read what is
  • 00:34:57
    this
  • 00:34:58
    this is an accusation of
  • 00:34:59
    ignorance
  • 00:35:02
    you don't know your bible
  • 00:35:05
and if you know about it you have
  • 00:35:07
    misapplied it
  • 00:35:08
and this malpractice is what breeds
  • 00:35:12
either legalism or lawlessness in our
  • 00:35:14
    lives
  • 00:35:15
what is extremely needed is a careful
  • 00:35:17
    interaction with the scriptures
  • 00:35:19
lest we open a door for a world of
  • 00:35:22
sorrow to flood the lives of naive
  • 00:35:24
    people
  • 00:35:28
and so jesus here says have you not read
  • 00:35:30
    what another scathing statement to
  • 00:35:31
pharisees who are apparently experts of
  • 00:35:33
the law you clearly didn't read you
  • 00:35:35
    clearly didn't see it
  • 00:35:37
listen much of the division and in our
  • 00:35:39
evangelical circles can be solved if we
  • 00:35:41
just really get to the bible
  • 00:35:43
    and stick with the bible
  • 00:35:46
on any extreme on any doctrine of this
  • 00:35:48
is what we should do or this is what we
  • 00:35:50
should not do praise god that most of
  • 00:35:52
    those feuds are secondary issues
  • 00:35:55
but i want to be as close to the truth
  • 00:35:57
    as possible
  • 00:35:58
    that's what i want
  • 00:36:00
i want every facet of the will of god to
  • 00:36:02
    be in line
  • 00:36:03
with the truth of my life
  • 00:36:05
and you want to know how we can solve
  • 00:36:07
most of these issues between brethren
  • 00:36:09
    who love christ
  • 00:36:10
just to stick with the word i'm not
  • 00:36:12
    concerned about your denominational
  • 00:36:13
    tradition i really am not
  • 00:36:16
i'm not even concerned about what the
  • 00:36:17
ancient fathers believed they're not my
  • 00:36:19
    authority
  • 00:36:20
    have you not read
  • 00:36:22
    have you
  • 00:36:23
    not read
  • 00:36:25
    jesus
  • 00:36:27
is my example and yours i hope
  • 00:36:29
and if you think that the pharisees were
  • 00:36:31
rattled by what he just said you would
  • 00:36:33
be right i would love to see the sight
  • 00:36:35
of these spies all for a sudden becoming
  • 00:36:37
silent because jesus wields the sword of
  • 00:36:39
the spirit i remember i was on a walk
  • 00:36:42
not too far from here and it was on a
  • 00:36:44
    midday morning
  • 00:36:46
and uh from from a distance i saw what
  • 00:36:49
you cannot deny to be two mormons the
  • 00:36:52
    bicycles gave it away
  • 00:36:55
the bicycles and the white dress shirts
  • 00:36:56
i don't mean to be i'm not trying to
  • 00:36:58
mock them but i'm just being honest
  • 00:36:59
    that's how i recognize them
  • 00:37:01
and so i just walked and walked and
  • 00:37:02
walked and they were sitting there and i
  • 00:37:04
thought you know what let me just plop
  • 00:37:05
beside him and they they were young i
  • 00:37:06
knew that they were on mission you know
  • 00:37:08
mormons if you don't know this mormons
  • 00:37:09
dedicate if they're serious mormons two
  • 00:37:11
years of their life they pause on
  • 00:37:13
everything in life to do mission they go
  • 00:37:15
to a different country they raise their
  • 00:37:17
own funds they move away from home and
  • 00:37:19
    they preach a false gospel
  • 00:37:21
for two years of their lives
  • 00:37:23
and most of them do have the younger
  • 00:37:24
    years of their lives
  • 00:37:26
and so i sat beside them and hearing
  • 00:37:27
their idea of the gospel and hearing
  • 00:37:29
what heaven is all about and it's
  • 00:37:31
amazing if you study cults all cults
  • 00:37:33
really have a fascination for sexuality
  • 00:37:36
study cults very carefully and you'll
  • 00:37:38
realize that there's this emphasis on
  • 00:37:40
    sex
  • 00:37:42
    look at islam
  • 00:37:43
mormons what's the what's the pinnacle
  • 00:37:45
of glory you having a celestial wife and
  • 00:37:48
    populating planets
  • 00:37:50
and so we talked about that we talked
  • 00:37:52
about their understanding of heaven well
  • 00:37:54
there's no real hell there's three tiers
  • 00:37:55
of heaven and if you were good enough
  • 00:37:57
you can get to the top tier if you don't
  • 00:37:58
you're in this lower compartment and so
  • 00:38:00
we really want to get to the top and the
  • 00:38:02
idea of the top is in their language
  • 00:38:03
enjoying family and having your loved
  • 00:38:06
ones and you dig deep it's much more
  • 00:38:08
    than that
  • 00:38:10
and here's where the argument ended and
  • 00:38:12
there was different arguments but this
  • 00:38:13
is this is all that put a stop to any
  • 00:38:16
    idea
  • 00:38:17
    being proposed on their part
  • 00:38:19
    have you not read
  • 00:38:22
and i looked at him and says have you
  • 00:38:23
not read what jesus said to the
  • 00:38:24
sadducees who try to make a case against
  • 00:38:26
the resurrection that one woman had
  • 00:38:29
    several wives
  • 00:38:30
whose husband will be hers in the
  • 00:38:33
resurrection and jesus says you do not
  • 00:38:35
    know
  • 00:38:36
the scriptures or the power of god those
  • 00:38:39
who will be resurrected unto life will
  • 00:38:40
be like the angels of god
  • 00:38:43
so you guys are you're motivated for
  • 00:38:46
your works here because you want to get
  • 00:38:47
to the top tier of heaven which the main
  • 00:38:49
theme of it is populating and having a
  • 00:38:51
family and jesus himself said you ain't
  • 00:38:53
    going to get married
  • 00:38:55
    have you not read
  • 00:38:57
oh would we know our bibles
  • 00:38:59
so that we can be free from false
  • 00:39:01
    doctrines
  • 00:39:03
so we come to jesus where was i
  • 00:39:07
and they were talking to him about these
  • 00:39:08
    disciples
  • 00:39:13
    and they're rattled
  • 00:39:15
what is jesus going to do apologize for
  • 00:39:17
    being too strong
  • 00:39:20
    no he's going to
  • 00:39:22
he's going to up up the ante
  • 00:39:24
if you think they're mad now he's about
  • 00:39:26
to make them very mad and he's going to
  • 00:39:28
do so with two statements we're going to
  • 00:39:30
stay in matthew since we're already
  • 00:39:31
    there
  • 00:39:32
two of these statements are in matthew
  • 00:39:34
one of them is shared with mark almost
  • 00:39:35
    word for word
  • 00:39:37
and so here's what he says in verse six
  • 00:39:38
after he talks about the priests
  • 00:39:42
and matthew brings up something in verse
  • 00:39:43
    six
  • 00:39:44
i tell you something greater than the
  • 00:39:46
    temple is here
  • 00:39:48
why doesn't mark bring that up well if
  • 00:39:50
    you understand matthew's main audience
  • 00:39:52
they were jews this would mean a lot
  • 00:39:53
more to the jew than the gentiles that
  • 00:39:55
mark was writing to so he brings up the
  • 00:39:57
temple he brings up the that prized
  • 00:40:00
    building for the jewish people
  • 00:40:03
and he says something astounding i mean
  • 00:40:05
he could have stopped at bringing up
  • 00:40:07
david and the priest and they could have
  • 00:40:08
moved on but like what jesus loves to do
  • 00:40:11
is bring up further truth using these
  • 00:40:13
    opportunities to amplify
  • 00:40:16
    his person
  • 00:40:17
i tell you something greater than the
  • 00:40:21
temple is here this is after he spoke
  • 00:40:23
about the priests who work in the temple
  • 00:40:25
    even on the sabbath
  • 00:40:27
if jesus means that he is greater than
  • 00:40:29
the temple which is what he is saying
  • 00:40:31
the one an astounding claim this is
  • 00:40:32
because this is what he is conveying if
  • 00:40:34
the priests of the physical temple pay
  • 00:40:36
attention to this if the priests of the
  • 00:40:38
physical temple were allowed to be
  • 00:40:40
    dismissed
  • 00:40:42
from the binding regulations of the
  • 00:40:44
sabbath because the nature of their work
  • 00:40:46
was divinely ordained how much more
  • 00:40:49
should these disciples of mine be exempt
  • 00:40:55
because they're eating as a result of
  • 00:40:57
    their service
  • 00:40:59
to what the temple is pointing to
  • 00:41:02
    you see
  • 00:41:04
if you're willing to overlook the priest
  • 00:41:05
because of their sacrificial service in
  • 00:41:07
    the physical house of god
  • 00:41:09
do you not realize that these men
  • 00:41:12
are working because they have been
  • 00:41:13
    serving
  • 00:41:15
the one who is greater than the temple
  • 00:41:18
    and he's here
  • 00:41:22
    greater than the temple
  • 00:41:25
who does this man think he is
  • 00:41:28
i'll tell you who he is
  • 00:41:31
he is the true ark of the covenant
  • 00:41:34
god's presence dwelling with man he is
  • 00:41:37
    the sacrifice that fulfills
  • 00:41:39
all the shadows of the ceremonies and
  • 00:41:42
the ordinances he is the priest who does
  • 00:41:44
    not continually stand to perform
  • 00:41:46
sacrifices but now is seated at the
  • 00:41:49
    right hand of god
  • 00:41:50
    because his shed blood suffices
  • 00:41:53
the standard of god's righteousness he
  • 00:41:56
is our omnipresent access to the father
  • 00:42:00
that veil has been torn and at any time
  • 00:42:02
and any place in the name of jesus we
  • 00:42:05
can come boldly to the throne of grace
  • 00:42:07
he is to be worthy of all praise and
  • 00:42:11
reverence and adoration for his beauty
  • 00:42:14
    outshines solomon's designs and herod's
  • 00:42:17
expansion to that design he is greater
  • 00:42:20
than the temple and he is our temple
  • 00:42:23
    jesus christ
  • 00:42:26
    think he stopped there
  • 00:42:30
i mean it's possible for these
  • 00:42:32
pharisees to have misunderstood what he
  • 00:42:34
said they did that many times
  • 00:42:36
    maybe he did register
  • 00:42:38
but what jesus is about to say in his
  • 00:42:40
second statement shared by matthew and
  • 00:42:42
mark would be clear as day because
  • 00:42:44
how he ends this whole discourse how he
  • 00:42:46
ends this dialogue with these men is by
  • 00:42:49
    saying
  • 00:42:50
    so the son of man
  • 00:42:52
is lord even of the sabbath
  • 00:42:57
mark says it almost word for word
  • 00:42:59
    here's the translation and it's a
  • 00:43:01
    beautiful translation
  • 00:43:03
he looks at these pharisees who are
  • 00:43:04
    running around jerusalem and the
  • 00:43:06
different streets of israel to try to
  • 00:43:09
try to find people who are breaking
  • 00:43:10
their law and he says you
  • 00:43:13
    don't get
  • 00:43:15
    to make the rules
  • 00:43:17
    about the sabbath
  • 00:43:20
    i do
  • 00:43:22
i am the lord of the sabbath i am the
  • 00:43:25
one who has authority over it
  • 00:43:27
    i created it
  • 00:43:29
i instituted it i declared it and i
  • 00:43:32
alone determined what happens on it
  • 00:43:36
    i mean i
  • 00:43:38
    to see their faces
  • 00:43:40
these men who who who made so much about
  • 00:43:43
who they were around the sabbath and
  • 00:43:45
    here's jesus looking at them
  • 00:43:47
and saying i'm the lord of the sabbath
  • 00:43:50
even i yes i'm lord over the sabbath up
  • 00:43:52
to this point in mark we've seen him
  • 00:43:53
    lord over so many things
  • 00:43:56
lord over temptation lord over sin lord
  • 00:43:59
    over demons lord over disease
  • 00:44:02
and here he is now saying i'm lord even
  • 00:44:04
    of the sabbath
  • 00:44:08
    i want to end here
  • 00:44:10
because again we we could be tempted to
  • 00:44:13
    just
  • 00:44:14
look at that as an observation and
  • 00:44:15
admire the insight and not realize how
  • 00:44:17
    it
  • 00:44:18
has direct instruction for our lives
  • 00:44:21
we get into a lot of trouble
  • 00:44:23
in our spiritual endeavors when we feel
  • 00:44:25
confident like the pharisees to add or
  • 00:44:28
remove rules or interpretations to the
  • 00:44:30
things that god has made clear in his
  • 00:44:32
    word
  • 00:44:34
we get into a lot of trouble
  • 00:44:38
but what kind of blessing and purity
  • 00:44:40
    comes
  • 00:44:41
and is assessed and is maintained in
  • 00:44:44
    every believer
  • 00:44:46
    especially leaders in the church
  • 00:44:49
who would live in light of the lordship
  • 00:44:50
of jesus christ in all things
  • 00:44:54
who would really believe that as jesus
  • 00:44:56
highlights the sabbath he says yes i'm
  • 00:44:58
    even lord of the sabbath
  • 00:45:01
what do we what do we know
  • 00:45:04
    what would we know
  • 00:45:06
if we believe that christ is lord over
  • 00:45:09
    yes everything
  • 00:45:11
    even fill in the blank
  • 00:45:15
lord you have the final say you are the
  • 00:45:19
lord of what we preach at this church
  • 00:45:22
    you have
  • 00:45:24
complete lordship over what we sing how
  • 00:45:27
we deal with one another how we build
  • 00:45:29
our lives in your name teach us to see
  • 00:45:32
that your way is the only way and it is
  • 00:45:35
the best way teach us to understand your
  • 00:45:37
word that we may apply it so that you
  • 00:45:40
may be maximally glorified and we may be
  • 00:45:42
maximally blessed teach us to understand
  • 00:45:45
that your decrees were designed to be
  • 00:45:47
adorned to a certain degree for you are
  • 00:45:50
our lord yes the lord of everything
  • 00:45:54
do you want to know what happens when
  • 00:45:55
you and i make our own rules
  • 00:45:58
and i bump into a lot of christians who
  • 00:45:59
    do
  • 00:46:00
about what it means to be a true
  • 00:46:01
follower of jesus christ you want to
  • 00:46:03
know what happens when we come up with
  • 00:46:05
    our own convictions and standards
  • 00:46:08
    that contradict this book
  • 00:46:10
that violate the clear teachings of
  • 00:46:12
jesus we get exactly what the pharisees
  • 00:46:15
    produced
  • 00:46:16
    by promoting their rules
  • 00:46:18
    burdens
  • 00:46:21
    burdens
  • 00:46:25
    legalism clear burden it's obvious
  • 00:46:30
    miserable people
  • 00:46:32
miserable ministries no joy no freedom
  • 00:46:35
and it doesn't even it doesn't even heal
  • 00:46:38
    you
  • 00:46:40
    some of the most
  • 00:46:42
    heinous people come from legalistic
  • 00:46:44
    backgrounds
  • 00:46:46
    but lawlessness
  • 00:46:47
being loose and light with god's word
  • 00:46:50
that also brings burden into our lives
  • 00:46:53
    it does
  • 00:46:55
    of a guilty conscience
  • 00:46:58
of the natural repercussions of sin
  • 00:47:02
robbed of the the blessing of god's face
  • 00:47:04
    shining upon us
  • 00:47:06
robbed of the assurance that our lives
  • 00:47:09
are not open to satan and his schemes
  • 00:47:12
    rob the fellowship with god
  • 00:47:15
    burdens
  • 00:47:17
when we come up with our own rules when
  • 00:47:18
we come up with our own ideas of what it
  • 00:47:20
means to be a true believer oh we open
  • 00:47:22
    our lives to burdens
  • 00:47:25
when jesus said come to me
  • 00:47:28
    come to me
  • 00:47:30
all who weary and are heavy laden
  • 00:47:32
when he says take my yoke upon you you
  • 00:47:34
know what he's saying there take my
  • 00:47:35
    burden upon you
  • 00:47:38
roll off the burden of your own ideas of
  • 00:47:40
what it means to please god of what it
  • 00:47:41
means to live free in this life and take
  • 00:47:44
    my yoke upon you
  • 00:47:47
    it's light
  • 00:47:49
    it's life-giving
  • 00:47:51
    it will set you free
  • 00:47:54
i want to ask you today
  • 00:47:57
for those who are visiting especially
  • 00:48:02
    is your relationship
  • 00:48:04
with god according to this book
  • 00:48:09
    are you burdened
  • 00:48:11
    are you burdened by sin
  • 00:48:13
are you burdened by trying to strive
  • 00:48:15
    your way to please god
  • 00:48:19
are you burdened with the sense of
  • 00:48:20
    purposelessness were you just floating
  • 00:48:22
around in this life you're just a number
  • 00:48:26
    come to jesus
  • 00:48:28
and trust that as he lays upon you his
  • 00:48:31
    word
  • 00:48:32
it will be the most freeing thing you've
  • 00:48:34
    ever experienced
  • 00:48:36
    he made you
  • 00:48:38
    he created you
  • 00:48:41
and when he did he gave us the option to
  • 00:48:44
    continue in fellowship with him
  • 00:48:46
or to have our own way when we made our
  • 00:48:49
own way we turned our back on him and we
  • 00:48:51
walked as fast as we can some are
  • 00:48:53
running in the other direction but
  • 00:48:55
    because he loves you
  • 00:48:57
    he dies for you
  • 00:48:58
and he calls for you to come back to him
  • 00:49:02
he paid a price the price that separates
  • 00:49:04
you from him and he wants you to know
  • 00:49:06
the life that only he can offer because
  • 00:49:09
he is the author of life
  • 00:49:11
he is the author of life
  • 00:49:14
    so stop running
  • 00:49:17
    stop making up
  • 00:49:19
your own idea and rules about what life
  • 00:49:21
is come to the one who created you
  • 00:49:25
    and who died for you
  • 00:49:27
and you will know not just life
  • 00:49:28
according to the words of jesus but life
  • 00:49:30
abundantly and that's not waiting for us
  • 00:49:32
in heaven oh no you can bubble up with
  • 00:49:34
that joy in life today even in this
  • 00:49:37
chaotic world you can know a deep seeded
  • 00:49:39
joy that no one can rob from you
  • 00:49:41
and he paid a high price for that to be
  • 00:49:42
real would you give up you know what
  • 00:49:44
    repentance simply means give up
  • 00:49:48
    stop
  • 00:49:49
    fall at his feet
  • 00:49:51
and as you're there look at those feet
  • 00:49:53
and realize that they were pierced for
  • 00:49:54
    you
  • 00:49:55
he was nailed to a piece of wood so that
  • 00:49:58
    you can know freedom
  • 00:50:00
and i pray that you you would be saved
  • 00:50:02
    today
  • 00:50:03
and for those who are saved would we
  • 00:50:05
prepare our hearts to partake on the
  • 00:50:06
    truth
  • 00:50:07
that jesus took our place and that we
  • 00:50:09
have life in him alone let's do that
  • 00:50:34
lord we thank you from the bottom of our
  • 00:50:36
    hearts
  • 00:50:40
that you are a good god
  • 00:50:43
you are not like pharaoh you do not make
  • 00:50:48
    our lives a burden
  • 00:50:55
you do not call us to make bricks
  • 00:50:57
without straw oh lord even in our
  • 00:50:59
obedience to your word you empower us
  • 00:51:02
and you forgive us when we fail
  • 00:51:05
and you do not give up on us because
  • 00:51:07
    your love is patient
  • 00:51:09
    thank you
  • 00:51:11
and lord as we partake of this meal we
  • 00:51:14
    pray
  • 00:51:15
that our eyes would be on the grace of
  • 00:51:17
    god
  • 00:51:18
in the person of jesus christ that all
  • 00:51:20
that we hear about do's and don'ts come
  • 00:51:22
    from the position
  • 00:51:25
    of being forgiven
  • 00:51:27
    freely
  • 00:51:28
    because of the lord jesus
  • 00:51:30
lord may this have a sanctifying effect
  • 00:51:32
    on this congregation
  • 00:51:34
we want to be in your will we want to
  • 00:51:36
please you we want to love you
  • 00:51:39
lord look into our hearts and would you
  • 00:51:40
    see a love for you
  • 00:51:42
a true love for you an imperfect love
  • 00:51:44
    yes but a love nonetheless
  • 00:51:47
we we adore you lord and for the cold
  • 00:51:49
    heart
  • 00:51:51
the cold heart that will walk up to this
  • 00:51:52
    table by faith
  • 00:51:55
    may this revive them
