00:00:00
in this video we're gonna talk about to
00:00:02
tour drills for the perfect takeaway all
00:00:10
right so you seen maybe more than
00:00:12
anybody in the world a variety of
00:00:15
takeaways on a daily basis yeah
00:00:17
thousands thousands this is a lesson
00:00:21
factory a lot of golfers coming here to
00:00:23
take lessons yeah
00:00:24
facilities awesome but you get the
00:00:28
benefit of seeing a lot of varieties of
00:00:31
takeaways yeah and seeing you know what
00:00:33
works what doesn't and how to and how to
00:00:34
fix them quickly because they they come
00:00:36
in for an hour they need a result that's
00:00:39
right that's what they're paying us for
00:00:40
it subpoenas for results so you know you
00:00:43
gotta go and figure out how can I get
00:00:46
this person hit might not fix everything
00:00:47
but how can I get them hitting it better
00:00:48
in this hour that's right so let's take
00:00:51
let's let me ask you this may be an
00:00:53
unfair question can you take that
00:00:55
massive database of takeaways and kind
00:00:59
of distill them down into a couple of
00:01:01
buckets of what you kind of see golfers
00:01:03
fall into generally as far as a variety
00:01:05
of takeaways absolutely so let's start
00:01:08
with you know the dogma of golf
00:01:11
instruction over the years some good
00:01:12
some bad right one of the one of the
00:01:14
ones I think that hurts players is the
00:01:16
idea that there's this kind of one piece
00:01:18
everything moves at the same rate
00:01:20
because one of the most misunderstood or
00:01:22
misapplied phrases or concepts out there
00:01:25
once we take away what listen if you
00:01:29
have five golfers what that means you're
00:01:30
gonna get five different answers but but
00:01:32
a little most of them will take it as
00:01:35
this yes they will turn everything and
00:01:38
leave their arms very passive right so
00:01:40
basically by the time that the club gets
00:01:43
in what you would say a takeaway level
00:01:46
which would be level to the ground
00:01:47
they've overturned their body which gets
00:01:49
the hands too far in the club too far in
00:01:51
and they've used up all the turn now
00:01:53
you've got this up and overemotional but
00:01:55
shoes are sweeping as what a reference
00:01:58
and we'll set you up at the front of the
00:02:00
swing playing so we can see how like
00:02:02
this that way yeah see how that would
00:02:04
represent itself in a one-piece kind of
00:02:06
the often yeah comes off that plane yeah
00:02:10
really the it starts bidding the plane
00:02:12
right in through
00:02:13
yeah it would probably be more like that
00:02:15
which this is No yeah no way so that
00:02:20
creates we will go into all the issues a
00:02:23
poor take away creates but it makes the
00:02:24
Gosling's brutally difficult goodness
00:02:26
you've got one second now you're
00:02:28
spending half of that one second to undo
00:02:31
something mm-hmm and try to do something
00:02:34
there's just not enough time so that
00:02:36
would be poor takeaway motion number one
00:02:39
I probably see that one more than that's
00:02:41
super common I would say number two the
00:02:46
really popped out hands like actually I
00:02:48
might see them that's that's the ugly
00:02:51
sister yes I guess the clubhead way too
00:02:53
far inside yeah and not to be outdone by
00:02:56
the extra special hand pop out roll open
00:03:00
clubface now you've got a real dilemma
00:03:03
so we've got essentially a one piece of
00:03:05
turning like a block of wood yes right
00:03:07
taking it to the literal one-piece
00:03:09
takeaway and then the multi piece hand
00:03:12
pop out hand out club head and take away
00:03:15
this one is death most golfers will fall
00:03:18
somewhere into one of those if they have
00:03:20
a takeaway and there's one more
00:03:21
iteration I see that's better better
00:03:24
they've they've taken or they've studied
00:03:26
golf swings and they've been told to
00:03:27
keep the hands in and the club out they
00:03:30
may have done this move so now they're
00:03:34
working with a solution for that
00:03:36
now they drag the hands in the club it
00:03:39
stays outside too long super sure this
00:03:42
thing you're a you're a slave to this
00:03:46
it's got a really start sword fighting
00:03:47
at the top well it's gone in somewhere
00:03:49
and it's gonna flop it off and open and
00:03:52
so in the we try to beat in to the
00:03:56
equation you how important this first
00:03:58
part of the backswing is absolutely
00:04:00
absolutely an it's it's one of those
00:04:02
deals where it goes back to your
00:04:03
original point is you gotta fix it you
00:04:05
gotta fix them so you really make your
00:04:07
job any easier to have a thousand
00:04:11
different takeaway fixes for a thousand
00:04:13
different takeaways like they all kind
00:04:15
of have similar issues and it's about
00:04:16
getting them on one truck saying very
00:04:20
children if you want a consistent result
00:04:23
as a teacher
00:04:25
you have to have some kind of parameters
00:04:27
to what you're doing because I know if I
00:04:29
can get the player inside those
00:04:30
parameters I get a consistent result
00:04:32
from the player yes I'm not just
00:04:34
throwing stuff at the wall I think I
00:04:38
know this person no matter what they're
00:04:40
doing right now if I can get them a
00:04:42
little more square a little better spot
00:04:44
with the body a little bit of spot with
00:04:46
the hands I know what that produces
00:04:48
exactly if I let them keep doing this
00:04:50
and I'm trying to work on transition
00:04:53
twisting it's a lot easier for me it
00:04:56
makes my job easier and helps them
00:04:57
faster just fix the root cause of the
00:05:00
issues so much easier to get rid of them
00:05:02
get rid of the weeds at the root than it
00:05:05
is to try to just trim them all the time
00:05:06
absolutely correct all right so with
00:05:09
that in mind so let's see what before we
00:05:11
go and dive into the drills the two
00:05:14
drills for the tour drills that we use
00:05:15
huh let's talk about the goals that we
00:05:18
want to have for a takeaway okay what
00:05:20
does that look okay so let's just stay
00:05:21
on our plane board we've got a million
00:05:24
questions about this thing by the way
00:05:25
I'll just address that now one of my
00:05:27
students built this for me it's a you
00:05:30
can't buy one of these maybe we should
00:05:32
start selling them they actually I found
00:05:33
a link and I've been sending it to guys
00:05:35
of email me this will put it in the
00:05:36
description Amazon sells something very
00:05:40
similar really its child's equipment now
00:05:43
for play rooms okay very similar and
00:05:46
we'll put a link into that so yeah they
00:05:47
can pick up something almost identical
00:05:49
very helpful to have in the house okay I
00:05:51
use it in a lot of lessons so the
00:05:54
takeaway is going to be put in a spot or
00:05:58
when the club is level to the ground
00:06:00
from this view level to the ground okay
00:06:02
low to the ground the club bed is gonna
00:06:04
be about in line with the hands okay
00:06:06
right that's gonna depend so we
00:06:09
obviously aren't seeing what this camera
00:06:11
is recording right now mhm
00:06:12
we just put in the middle we try to
00:06:13
stand in the middle so the camera is
00:06:16
much higher than where we would film a
00:06:18
swing from so what you're describing
00:06:20
isn't gonna show up necessarily no on
00:06:23
this camp here in a mirror yeah you
00:06:26
could see basically yes very something
00:06:28
very simple Club it in line with your
00:06:30
hand again we want to film this so if
00:06:31
I'm filming your swing I wanna film this
00:06:33
camera about hands height right behind
00:06:36
ya and I let see that far enough so they
00:06:38
can see that where it is 15 20 feet away
00:06:40
so that puts you in a spot where hands
00:06:43
in line with the club hit club level to
00:06:46
the ground the actual hands about in
00:06:50
front of the thigh about pretty much
00:06:52
where they started yeah as far as this
00:06:55
the depth depth but also they've swung
00:06:58
to a point there's some arm swing juice
00:07:00
that puts it in front of the leg this is
00:07:03
right
00:07:03
the other piece there's some little bit
00:07:05
of pronation the lead arm it just means
00:07:08
you're turning your hand where it right
00:07:10
now the palm is facing to the camera it
00:07:14
would face back corner so this would be
00:07:15
supination like you're holding a bowl
00:07:17
suit yep that's pronation so there's
00:07:20
some pronation pronation now in a
00:07:22
clockwise motion their last piece you
00:07:24
have to get this face in a good spot and
00:07:27
to do that as you take the club way the
00:07:29
right wrist is gonna angle back on
00:07:31
itself a little which you'll flatten the
00:07:33
left wrist a little bit hmm
00:07:34
okay that puts very very grip dependent
00:07:37
on how this limbs will look like we work
00:07:40
with Scott teaches both Joan Durant and
00:07:42
Boo Weekley
00:07:43
to two opposite ends of a scale as far
00:07:46
as grip Street which is just rotation on
00:07:48
the grass exactly alright so they both
00:07:50
look different with that left wrist at
00:07:52
that spot but the club head is in the
00:07:55
exact same spot so Mike is saying if you
00:07:57
have a more of a strong attachment or
00:07:59
grip to people on the club when you get
00:08:01
here you're gonna have a little cupping
00:08:02
or Cup but pay attention to the face
00:08:04
because we don't want it exaggerate it
00:08:06
open right and we don't want to
00:08:07
exaggerate we're up close to toe up just
00:08:11
slightly less than toe up it's gonna be
00:08:13
where the sweet spot is the last but not
00:08:15
least there's gonna be a little bit of
00:08:18
torso rotation and a little bit of hip
00:08:20
rotation well alright so those are your
00:08:22
kind of key checkpoints now let's go
00:08:25
into the drills and we'll see how you
00:08:28
can incorporate these on the driving
00:08:29
range all right Sean let's go through
00:08:31
now to tour drills that we use with
00:08:32
really all level of players all the way
00:08:35
up through our tour players and they're
00:08:36
they're very simple but they're very
00:08:38
effective
00:08:39
they cover a wide range of issues which
00:08:41
we like having a couple drills versus
00:08:44
thousands and thousands girls for the
00:08:45
same fix and the best part you don't
00:08:47
need any need any special equipment
00:08:48
we're really big into using things that
00:08:51
we pretty much all either having her
00:08:52
golf bag or have laying around the house
00:08:54
to make it simple absolutely yes so
00:08:56
let's call the first one the Nick price
00:08:59
drill I think I saw him doing it at Bay
00:09:01
Hill they used to go there a lot when I
00:09:03
was a kid watch the golf tournament
00:09:04
every year pretty much pretty good ball
00:09:06
striker yeah he was this while I went to
00:09:08
watch him is it at the time I think he
00:09:10
was number one ranked in the world then
00:09:12
he was doing a drill on the range where
00:09:14
he would take his address position I
00:09:16
think Ledbetter might have been with him
00:09:18
at the time he would put his hand here
00:09:20
and then swing the club head back and
00:09:22
swing his left arm back would leave his
00:09:24
arm here so he would swing it back so he
00:09:27
would he would swing his left arm under
00:09:29
his right mm-hmm okay so it was fairly
00:09:32
ingenious because then he would put his
00:09:34
right hand on and then he would hit a
00:09:36
shot so what he was doing he was guilty
00:09:39
of this early overturn which got his
00:09:42
club inside too far right causing him to
00:09:44
lift to the top which is one of his
00:09:46
Bugaboos and his swings he struggled
00:09:48
like somebody with this is brisk tempo
00:09:50
probably real easy they leave the club
00:09:52
the two low get turned too quick and
00:09:55
gets out of sleep no arms would lift and
00:09:57
they would struggle right so what a
00:10:00
great way for him to work on that
00:10:02
because what happens is when you put
00:10:03
your arm here and then swing the club
00:10:04
you get a two-for-one
00:10:05
first of all with just your left hand on
00:10:08
the club it's amazing how instinctively
00:10:10
you just stick the club because of the
00:10:12
weight of it yes it needs to find
00:10:14
neutral finds balance I guess you would
00:10:16
say so as you're doing that it'll pretty
00:10:18
much just line up with your hand and to
00:10:20
do it correctly or to do it you have to
00:10:23
swing your arm a little to get some
00:10:24
momentum right so that's one the second
00:10:27
great part about this drill is that it
00:10:30
keeps your shoulders from overturning
00:10:31
because when you leave your right hand
00:10:33
here you're not going to rotate your
00:10:35
body's wrench so here here now I've got
00:10:39
the correct amount of turn in my trunk
00:10:41
and my hips
00:10:42
now I've sequenced my takeaway from
00:10:45
there I'm just gonna finish a little bit
00:10:48
of arm swing a little bit of turn I have
00:10:49
no more run off no more lick and I'm
00:10:51
hitting the
00:10:51
and that's a great way that's drill
00:10:54
number one the question you get a lot in
00:10:57
all the social media channels that we
00:10:58
that we work on is guys want to go
00:11:02
really deep into this like so we talk
00:11:05
about take away for instance this tight
00:11:06
alright so how much forearm verses
00:11:09
that's not a forearm how much bicep
00:11:12
verses lat do I need to feel for this
00:11:15
take away me let's that's way to in
00:11:17
detail you're going down the wrong road
00:11:19
thinking about that that's the beauty of
00:11:21
this drill is it's a swing boom that's
00:11:23
how much of all that you need to feel
00:11:25
and you need to feel it rather than you
00:11:28
know we can't type out an email saying
00:11:30
okay ten percent flex over that's just
00:11:33
not how it works because this is not a
00:11:35
destination this is an early part of a
00:11:37
whole motion and if you can feel these
00:11:40
things right that's the beauty of this
00:11:42
huh I can close my eyes I can feel that
00:11:44
put that on there that might be a
00:11:46
completely different look than I've ever
00:11:48
seen myself in a mirror but it's gonna
00:11:50
be there right look so now I can start
00:11:52
to connect those dots yeah you know once
00:11:55
you do that a few times put two hands on
00:11:57
the club sit oh I feel it now I got to
00:11:59
get more motion in the club head and
00:12:00
what we usually see with this or what
00:12:02
I've seen is this is a left arm drill
00:12:05
that we're doing the guys are firing out
00:12:07
my right arm was nowhere near doing what
00:12:09
it was supposed to do mm-hmm
00:12:10
and it was either pulling back like you
00:12:12
said or taking it up so you really by
00:12:14
taking this arm that the culprit how to
00:12:16
play you can now start to get this thing
00:12:19
working better and then put it back on
00:12:21
okay that makes sense
00:12:23
okay Mike let's talk about tor drill
00:12:25
number two for the perfect takeaway yep
00:12:27
it's a motion now let's put it like
00:12:30
motion let's put more emotion to it
00:12:31
right so I really love this drill
00:12:35
because it takes care of almost all the
00:12:39
takeaway issues that's right right and a
00:12:41
lot of those arise because we're trying
00:12:43
to start things from a static position
00:12:46
right so if we were gonna go play catch
00:12:47
right when throw balls like camera two
00:12:50
cameras gonna come to life and throw
00:12:51
balls back at us we would throw and
00:12:53
while we're waiting is what we'd be
00:12:55
doing without even thinking about it we
00:12:58
wouldn't throw or get ready to throw
00:13:00
and then freeze right yeah you got to be
00:13:05
moving before the movement starts and
00:13:08
that's it's not a big swing your big
00:13:10
rocky but there is some subtle movements
00:13:12
there that's really gonna help yeah it'd
00:13:13
be like you playing third base like this
00:13:16
evolves tell me you got a scoop it is
00:13:19
all right they'll send you out there to
00:13:20
right field if that has so in baseball
00:13:22
is is different to because you're able
00:13:25
to move around they if the bat golf is a
00:13:28
little different yes it's so static so
00:13:30
how do we get some freedom and athletic
00:13:33
movement as the club he was always very
00:13:35
difficult that's why people struggle in
00:13:37
this first part of the swing how do we
00:13:38
get it going it's like the classic
00:13:40
question how do I start my swing right
00:13:42
here all the time instead of thinking
00:13:43
about what muscle to use and right how
00:13:46
to do this I can't yeah yeah yeah so
00:13:49
here's one way to do it and I love these
00:13:52
kind of drills right get in the club in
00:13:55
motion you know a lot of these drills I
00:13:57
got from different teachers over the
00:13:58
years this one or give credit to Gary
00:14:00
Gilcrest
00:14:01
unbelievable teacher uses a lot of these
00:14:03
drills and is Golf Academy during the
00:14:06
amount of drills in his library and guys
00:14:08
kind of got some good players okay so
00:14:09
this one here start the club forward
00:14:13
okay as you do that and I would just do
00:14:16
it as a practice first don't hit a ball
00:14:17
yet right start the club forward and
00:14:20
lift the right heel so it looks like
00:14:23
this you're kind of past impact with
00:14:25
your weight pressure all that stuff yeah
00:14:27
all on the front side and instead of
00:14:28
just swinging the handle forward I've
00:14:30
let the club head swing and kind of
00:14:31
pivot off my belt buck yes
00:14:33
okay I'll cup the left wrist right and
00:14:35
we're not trying to pose post impact you
00:14:37
know something like this so it looks
00:14:39
like this I'll do it from face on and I
00:14:40
do it from down the line to show you
00:14:42
what the results so forward put the
00:14:45
right heel back down swing the club back
00:14:47
stop yep okay so from face on view I've
00:14:51
accomplished the pressure shift at the
00:14:54
right time right I've got the most
00:14:56
pressure on my trail foot when the club
00:14:58
is the farthest away from the target
00:14:59
we're receiving a pass from the camera
00:15:01
in we're gonna receive it it's gonna be
00:15:03
all kind of one mode
00:15:04
we're gonna gather it and then get ready
00:15:06
to go boom okay now this is where it
00:15:09
really starts to get good right so now
00:15:11
I've swung the club forward pressure off
00:15:14
the right heel right heels up off the
00:15:16
ground
00:15:16
put it down swing the club back stop I
00:15:19
mean I put some speed in there right
00:15:22
just to get away from the wood in the
00:15:24
field we're big on doing drills slowly
00:15:26
but this is one of those drills where
00:15:28
you really want to start energizing yeah
00:15:30
energy put a little put a little motion
00:15:32
in it and then stop and by doing that
00:15:35
it's gonna force you into a lot of good
00:15:37
positions just first it's gonna get the
00:15:40
club head swinging instead of this
00:15:42
one-piece takeaway amazing second it
00:15:45
gets the wrist hinging at the right rate
00:15:48
yes no risk always it's using the weight
00:15:55
of the club to set the club this right
00:15:59
instead of just trying to push it are
00:16:00
you trying to fish for it and make each
00:16:02
increment happen fishing for positions
00:16:05
in golf is a difficult way to go about
00:16:07
it and I say that because to me this is
00:16:09
I'm practicing my takeaway right I'm
00:16:12
practicing my take oh not really
00:16:13
you're setting the club there but once
00:16:15
you make a backswing it's trapping
00:16:16
forces in play yeah it's gonna change
00:16:18
it's changing you know taxing anything
00:16:20
so go here swing it back I've put the
00:16:24
club in a good spot I've got my body
00:16:26
pressure in a good spot and if I do it
00:16:29
correctly I won't overturn no right
00:16:32
because I've got motion in the club it's
00:16:34
swinging the rate of it swinging is
00:16:36
going at a faster pace and I can even
00:16:38
turn in the direction of it yes so I've
00:16:40
got the right amount of torso rotation
00:16:42
the right amount of hip rotation it's
00:16:43
like an all-inclusive type that's where
00:16:45
I drill now you can hit balls with this
00:16:49
one too that we encourage that so we
00:16:52
like things that you can do especially
00:16:54
this one without a lot of props like
00:16:55
you're saying so this one
00:16:57
take the ball teed up with like an eight
00:16:59
or 7-iron okay just to make it easier at
00:17:02
first when you first do the drill
00:17:04
however the club off the ground above
00:17:06
the ball swing the club forward light in
00:17:08
your right heel again put it down swing
00:17:10
back and then go through and hit
00:17:12
and you are gonna feel especially if
00:17:14
you've never felt dynamic motion you're
00:17:16
gonna sense what it feels like to have
00:17:17
that flow that we're always talking
00:17:19
about I really start to feel now
00:17:21
pressure trace you're gonna start the
00:17:23
backswing right this take away by
00:17:26
stepping on this foot mm-hmm then forget
00:17:29
where the club is right now and go step
00:17:32
and then back to another step onto the
00:17:34
front foot this club is going to respond
00:17:36
like you've probably never felt it
00:17:37
before you're not gonna have all kinds
00:17:39
of runoff because you're not gonna be
00:17:40
stepping and then gathering and waiting
00:17:43
and then trying to make it forward step
00:17:45
step it's a little dance move with Scott
00:17:48
likes to say it's a little dance move
00:17:49
that let the club respond to those
00:17:53
movements you will see some really cool
00:17:55
things start to happen so you have a
00:17:58
really interesting part of this if you
00:18:00
can have a good grip and have a pretty
00:18:02
good grasp of the body angles like make
00:18:05
sure you're not kind of flattening the
00:18:06
shoulders and all that you were gonna be
00:18:08
amazed without thinking about swing
00:18:11
playing right you're gonna be amazed at
00:18:14
how well the club swings on play without
00:18:17
you even trying to do it that's right
00:18:18
because you're using a good grip good
00:18:21
body motion and good sequence to create
00:18:24
the swing plane instead of trying to
00:18:26
fish its what the best players in the
00:18:28
world do they they allow their dynamic
00:18:30
movements to create a lot of the static
00:18:32
positions that we've all been guilty of
00:18:35
over analyzing before it that's the
00:18:37
progression of that it's not dynamic
00:18:39
movements aren't born from static
00:18:41
positions the other way around
00:18:42
yeah like the great players over the
00:18:43
years never even film their swing some
00:18:46
of them had no unbelievable yes on
00:18:48
playing Sam's knees right these guys
00:18:50
didn't grow up in a beautiful-looking
00:18:52
another swing right they grew up out
00:18:55
there getting it done moving and there's
00:18:57
nobody that moves better than Sam yeah
00:18:59
yeah funny enough you say that Sam Snead
00:19:03
was one of the players that actually
00:19:04
picks his right heel up before he came
00:19:06
to the club away there's a lot of great
00:19:07
players to do yeah there is a lot of
00:19:09
good players and he's a great example
00:19:11
cuz he's considered to have one of the
00:19:13
most rhythmically fluid rhythmically
00:19:15
it's hard to say fluid swings and part
00:19:18
of that is because he gives himself a
00:19:19
head start then you start your
00:19:21
this flood oily sam snead trademark ya
00:19:25
tempo and rhythm yeah yeah so that the
00:19:27
right heel motion what you can do if
00:19:28
this drill kind of resonates with you
00:19:30
and you feel like you're getting results
00:19:31
by swinging it forward swinging the back
00:19:33
when you get on the COFF course and
00:19:35
incorporate it into your absolutely game
00:19:38
right absolutely
00:19:39
so what you would do is set up to the
00:19:41
ball as your waggling i would tap both
00:19:43
heels and then as you before you take
00:19:45
the club away lift your right heel up
00:19:48
inside the shoe you don't even either
00:19:49
get around your yeah just and
00:19:51
perceivably you're just creating a
00:19:53
little trigger it's just enough to get a
00:19:56
little momentum to the left and you
00:19:57
start a little momentum left and you
00:20:00
start putting it down again it gives you
00:20:02
the feeling of that flow that it's like
00:20:05
an athletic flow that's exactly right
00:20:07
you can see it in great swings Ernie
00:20:08
ELLs all these swings you can see in
00:20:10
your mind
00:20:11
Louie you stays and some reason they're
00:20:12
here you come to mind and they have that
00:20:16
kind of flowing motion to the swing that
00:20:19
it looks effortless the copper-kidd
00:20:21
lines on your grandson your buddy or
00:20:23
whatever neither one of you are gonna be
00:20:27
right you're gonna be digitized even the
00:20:29
ball and move it and you got to adjust
00:20:32
and all this it's it's motion we want to
00:20:34
create motion and allow that good motion
00:20:37
to create good positions with the club
00:20:39
absolutely right so those are the two
00:20:40
tour drills for the perfect takeaway
00:20:42
we've got the Nick Price drill right
00:20:45
hover the hand here and then we've got
00:20:47
the athletic motion drill basically
00:20:49
athletic motion take away athletic
00:20:51
motion take away for an Alan emotion
