00:00:00
well the Cardinals call up Thomas to JC
00:00:02
maybe that's the sign they're ready to
00:00:04
play the kids except they sent down
00:00:06
Victor Scott to do it oh boy what's
00:00:09
going on everyone and welcome in to this
00:00:11
edition of bsha daily Brendan Schaefer
00:00:13
here with you Wednesday September 11th
00:00:16
20124 as the Cardinals last night well
00:00:19
laid another egg and it really does seem
00:00:21
to be all over but the crying at this
00:00:23
point when it comes to the Cardinals
00:00:25
postseason hopes as they fall to the
00:00:28
Reds 3 nothing it's another game where
00:00:30
the Cardinal offense just doesn't get it
00:00:32
going they're down to 500 once again
00:00:34
they're 72 and 72 as of this recording
00:00:38
on Wednesday
00:00:39
afternoon and yeah there just doesn't
00:00:41
seem to be a lot of momentum toward
00:00:43
making a push down the stretch or 11
00:00:46
games behind the Milwaukee Brewers I'll
00:00:48
check the wild card standings as well uh
00:00:50
feels a little fruitless but they are 6
00:00:52
and a half behind a tie between the
00:00:54
Braves and the Mets right now for that
00:00:56
third wild card spot it really does seem
00:00:58
like October baseball and it's going to
00:01:00
be played without your St Louis
00:01:01
Cardinals in 2024 and one of the raster
00:01:05
moves that was announced or reported I
00:01:08
guess I should say ahead of time by
00:01:11
Robert Murray a fan sited earlier in the
00:01:13
day on Tuesday that well Thomas the JC
00:01:15
is getting the call up for the Cardinals
00:01:17
the top prospect the infielder who can
00:01:20
play some short can play some third can
00:01:22
play some second has been playing a lot
00:01:24
of Short Stop recently in Memphis
00:01:26
getting ready for a potential
00:01:28
opportunity at the big league level
00:01:29
you'd have have to figure and now he
00:01:31
makes that start yesterday at shortstop
00:01:33
giving Mason win a day off but the way
00:01:37
the Cardinals do it is by optioning
00:01:38
Victor Scott II another top prospect
00:01:41
back to Triple A so the notion of
00:01:44
playing the kids is not maybe the one
00:01:46
that the Cardinals are doing with both
00:01:48
feet in and so we'll talk about that
00:01:50
today on bsha daily as well as how
00:01:53
Michael SE obviously plays into this
00:01:55
because he's going to be getting that
00:01:56
center field opportunity as he has been
00:01:58
ahead of Victor Scott since he returned
00:02:00
from injury just general philosophy on
00:02:03
what the Cardinals are doing there and
00:02:04
how we feel about things today that's
00:02:06
what we're getting into today on B shave
00:02:08
daily we'll try to go down on the farm
00:02:09
as well uh brought to you by of course
00:02:11

00:03:27
YouTube channel so appreciate you guys
00:03:29
for so supporting bsha daily and for
00:03:31
supporting Underdog fantasy as well okay
00:03:34
enough about that let's get into the
00:03:35
Cardinals conversation so Victor Scott
00:03:37
the second is an exciting young Prospect
00:03:40
the Cardinals called him back up they
00:03:42
gave him some run he was looking a
00:03:44
little bit better a little more
00:03:45
confident at the plate uh we know what
00:03:47
he's capable of doing in the field and
00:03:50
then Michael canani comes back from his
00:03:51
injury was out about a month maybe a
00:03:53
little longer with that oblique and
00:03:55
basically upon his return has assumed or
00:03:58
reassumed really the everyday center
00:04:00
field role for the Cardinals and for
00:04:03
manager Olie marmel look the Cardinals
00:04:05
like Michael canani and I know that this
00:04:07
is a popular topic of conversation on
00:04:09
social media right now because of the
00:04:12
move to option Victor Scott II back to
00:04:15
Memphis and this should be a time of
00:04:16
year where you are getting the young
00:04:19
players opportunities so that they're
00:04:20
more prepared for next year right like
00:04:22
that's the way a lot of people view this
00:04:24
situation and understandably so because
00:04:27
the Cardinals are out of it they're not
00:04:28
going to make the playoffs I know six
00:04:29
and a half games technically Anything
00:04:31
could happen but you would need a
00:04:33
Monumental Collapse by multiple teams in
00:04:35
front of you in the Wild Card Standings
00:04:37
coupled with the Cardinals just going on
00:04:39
an absolute run so the odds of all of
00:04:41
those things being stacked together it
00:04:43
just seems very very unlikely that the
00:04:45
Cardinal are going to make that move a
00:04:47
lot of you guys have been on that boat
00:04:49
for weeks and weeks at this point so
00:04:51
that should not really come as a
00:04:52
surprise to anybody but what does it
00:04:55
mean for the way the Cardinals want to
00:04:56
handle their roster and handle their
00:04:58
lineups and make maybe even their
00:05:00
pitching rotation the rest of the way uh
00:05:03
well when you when you hear Hey Thomas
00:05:04
toj is going to be called up I I guess
00:05:06
the assumption is okay good they're
00:05:07
going to you know maybe somebody needs
00:05:09
an injury iil which is not a good thing
00:05:12
but it's something that happens from
00:05:13
time to time especially we saw it at the
00:05:15
end of last season after we knew the
00:05:16
Cardinals were out of it they started
00:05:18
iing a bunch of guys for you know minor
00:05:20
to moderate injuries and then that
00:05:22
allowed for guys like say Mason wind on
00:05:24
the stretch last season to get regular
00:05:26
playing time of course and so you you
00:05:30
think look the Cardinals are in maybe
00:05:31
not the exact same scenario they've
00:05:33
already won more games this year 72 than
00:05:35
they did all of last season but it is
00:05:38
similar in so much as well they didn't
00:05:40
make the playoffs last year and you kind
00:05:42
of figure that's the direction of this
00:05:44
season as well so play the kids right
00:05:47
and Thomas the JC I think has been
00:05:48
knocking on the door of a of a promotion
00:05:51
for quite a while his numbers really
00:05:53
over the second half of the season have
00:05:54
been great at Triple A when you look at
00:05:56
the total numbers of a 751 Ops you know
00:06:00
that's fine but when you look at the the
00:06:02
recency of how he's been performing he
00:06:04
had a torrid Pace in July where he had
00:06:06
an Ops of 990 during the month of July I
00:06:10
mean hit 349 for an average on base of
00:06:13
400 almost slugging 600 he was at 590 on
00:06:16
the slugging percentage during the month
00:06:18
of July just fantastic numbers by um SJC
00:06:22
and then you saw the month of August the
00:06:24
power even uptick a little bit more as
00:06:26
the batting average did back down he was
00:06:27
still demonstrating power had seven home
00:06:29
runs in August with a 771 Ops and then
00:06:32
was around 800 in the 29 or so uh at
00:06:36
bats that he got in September before the
00:06:38
Cardinals call him up so really over the
00:06:40
second half of the year he's been a much
00:06:42
more potent threat than he was toward
00:06:44
the beginning he seems to be coming into
00:06:45
his own hitting 12 home runs since July
00:06:49
1st and has 20 on the season so yeah it
00:06:52
was time to see what SJC could do and
00:06:53
they've been playing him a ton at
00:06:54
shortstop that's his most prominent
00:06:56
position this year in Triple A in terms
00:06:58
of the playing time that he has gotten
00:07:00
down there preparing him not to take
00:07:02
over Mason Way's job but to have that be
00:07:05
an opportunity and an option for the big
00:07:07
league Cardinal because of course
00:07:08
Brandon Crawford was in that role for a
00:07:10
while it was a role that didn't have a
00:07:12
ton of utility because of how often
00:07:13
Mason wi is active and playing and so
00:07:15
they figured yeah we don't really maybe
00:07:17
need Crawford around with the production
00:07:19
that he's giving but so JC could fill
00:07:20
that role and could also back up second
00:07:22
could back up third and lo and behold
00:07:24
you might find a decent amount of
00:07:25
playing time for Thomas Saji that was my
00:07:27
opinion number of weeks ago when they
00:07:29
they when they dumped Brandon Crawford
00:07:31
and it's still my opinion and we'll see
00:07:32
what what oi marmal is kind of able to
00:07:34
do with those spots and and how often he
00:07:37
could find Thomas the JC's name into
00:07:39
those positions uh I think it's
00:07:41
certainly worthwhile to get his feet
00:07:42
under him a lot of people would make the
00:07:44
claim though that the same should be
00:07:45
said for Victor Scott because he did
00:07:49
start to look a little bit more potent
00:07:50
at the plate he did look a little more
00:07:51
comfortable in the abats he was taking
00:07:53
the numbers didn't really take off um
00:07:56
you know I I'll find the game logs of
00:07:58
Victor Scott II's second promotion
00:08:00
remember he started the season with the
00:08:02
team and then went back down for a while
00:08:04
came back up upon the canani injury and
00:08:07
did get a good amount of run from August
00:08:10
the 5th to September the eth that's the
00:08:13
the Run of his game logs but here's the
00:08:15
numbers 222 average 259 on base and a
00:08:17
370 slug in that spin couple of home
00:08:20
runs for Victor Scott and 85 plate
00:08:22
appearances that's a
00:08:24
629 Ops 27 strikeouts in 85 plate
00:08:28
appearances a k rate well above 30% um
00:08:32
so while he did look better than he did
00:08:34
at the beginning of the Season where
00:08:35
when they they optioned him on April
00:08:37
19th he had an 085 average and a 274 Ops
00:08:41
um got into one game at rickwood field
00:08:44
for a defensive replacement late and
00:08:47
then was obviously sent back and only
00:08:49
returned on August the 5th so the
00:08:50
numbers for the season on Victor Scott
00:08:52
he still only got an Ops of 478 he's
00:08:54
hitting 164 I don't want to punish him
00:08:56
for what happened in April though I
00:08:57
think it was pretty clear he had some uh
00:08:59
some growing yet to do and has made some
00:09:01
strides in Triple A and then got the
00:09:03
chance over the last month plus and it
00:09:05
looked better six some OD you know 629
00:09:07
Ops but not not the kind of numbers
00:09:10
where you go well he's just got to be in
00:09:11
there but if you're going to comp it to
00:09:13
am Mason win which I think is fair I
00:09:15
think I've excuse me I think I've told
00:09:17
this story previously about at spring
00:09:19
training asking Oli marmal do you see
00:09:22
parallels to where Victor Skype II is at
00:09:24
this point coming into this camp in 2024
00:09:27
to where Mason win was a year ago and
00:09:29
he's said he could see those parallels
00:09:31
in terms of just the the Readiness and I
00:09:33
think Victor Scott probably would have
00:09:34
been better suited to get a call up
00:09:36
later in the year than have to start
00:09:37
with the team but he had a good spring
00:09:40
they had a need in center field and they
00:09:42
went for it I had no problem with it at
00:09:44
the time I was advocating for it and it
00:09:45
didn't work out you know I'm I'm not
00:09:47
afraid to admit that but I think over
00:09:49
the course of this year he's he's had
00:09:50
some growth and then an opportunity to
00:09:52
hit the ground running maybe for a
00:09:54
September call up or as it happened in
00:09:56
this case an August call up and then go
00:09:58
from then to the the season and gain
00:10:00
that growth even if it is just maybe a
00:10:02
600 Ops because remember Mason wi last
00:10:05
year hit like 150 his numbers at the big
00:10:07
league level were not particularly
00:10:09
strong over the final push of that
00:10:12
season uh checking it out remember they
00:10:14
they called him up and made sure that he
00:10:15
was still going to have rookie
00:10:17
eligibility uh with the amount of time
00:10:18
that they that they used him a 172
00:10:21
average and a 467 Ops that was Mason win
00:10:23
last year for 137 plate appearances um
00:10:26
122 at bats so he kept the rookie
00:10:29
eligibility I think 150 uh if I'm not
00:10:32
mistaken is the the threshold there
00:10:34
where he would have lost it and now he's
00:10:36
sort of tailing a a little bit off
00:10:37
offensively down to a 728 Ops but that's
00:10:41
night and day compared to what you saw
00:10:42
from Mason win in the brief spell at the
00:10:44
end of last season and I think you would
00:10:47
be hardpressed to argue against the
00:10:49
notion that Mason win truly benefited
00:10:51
from getting those 137 plate appearances
00:10:54
and playing in those 37 Big League games
00:10:57
last year for a team that was going
00:10:58
nowhere fast we knew those Cardinals
00:10:59
weren't going to make the playoffs by
00:11:01
the time September 1st or you know late
00:11:03
August whatever it was for Mason wi when
00:11:05
they finally called him up whenever time
00:11:07
that rolled around we knew the deal we
00:11:09
knew where the Cardinals were going and
00:11:10
it was basically nowhere these Cardinals
00:11:13
now are in a spot where they're going
00:11:14
nowhere they're going to have more wins
00:11:15
they're they're still straining to maybe
00:11:17
have a 500 record because consecutive
00:11:19
losing seasons in St Louis hasn't
00:11:21
happened in in non-strike shortened or
00:11:23
Co shortened Seasons since like the 50s
00:11:26
or something insane like that so there
00:11:28
is a point of Pride that to not have a
00:11:30
losing season if they can avoid it but
00:11:32
more than anything I think the
00:11:33
organization would benefit from having a
00:11:36
look at guys that could be contributing
00:11:38
next year and getting them that key
00:11:40
experience in Big League games you can't
00:11:42
simulate that experience you can only
00:11:44
have it when you have it to offer and
00:11:46
there's a case to be made that they do
00:11:47
right now with Victor Scott II they
00:11:49
could play him they could they could
00:11:50
have him up and they could play him
00:11:51
every single day and maybe that could
00:11:54
end up paying the type of dividends for
00:11:56
him in 2025 that were paid toward Mason
00:11:58
win in 2023 when he then came into 2024
00:12:01
ready to be an everyday guy and he has
00:12:03
by and large thrived in the role that
00:12:05
he's been in I think Mason win is a
00:12:07
present fixture and Mainstay and a
00:12:09
future star for the Cardinals and and
00:12:12
what he's going to be able to do in the
00:12:13
years ahead so that was very beneficial
00:12:15
to his game I totally understand where a
00:12:17
lot of people are coming from and making
00:12:19
the same comp to Victor Scott and saying
00:12:21
well why is it that they're not willing
00:12:23
to do that for him when he has shown the
00:12:26
improvements from what it looked like in
00:12:27
April to what it looked like in August
00:12:30
in early September why would that not be
00:12:32
something the Cardinals would look to
00:12:34
prioritize and the answer right now
00:12:35
appears to be Michael CI and I can
00:12:38
understand the frustration with that
00:12:40
because for a lot of people look canani
00:12:42
was an afterthought as recently as this
00:12:44
February he just wasn't really
00:12:45
considered in the long-term plans of the
00:12:47
organization he was a waiver claim that
00:12:49
they added late in the 2023 season got a
00:12:51
little bit of time but the team didn't
00:12:53
really honestly know a lot about him I
00:12:55
knew he was a glove first guy um but
00:12:57
he's had some moments this year and
00:12:58
obviously is a great bunter he's a base
00:13:00
stealer he's a superb defensive center
00:13:03
fielder um probably should be in the the
00:13:05
Gold Glove running but I think he missed
00:13:07
the cut off on the Innings total by the
00:13:09
threshold that it needed to be so I
00:13:10
don't think he's going to be in
00:13:11
consideration for Gold Glove but to me
00:13:13
he's one of the best outfielders
00:13:14
defensively in baseball uh at the
00:13:17
premium spot of center field so I
00:13:19
understand wanting to get canani in
00:13:21
there but cani and look he's not like an
00:13:23
old crafty veteran canani just turned 25
00:13:27
years old in July so he's a young player
00:13:29
as well I think the public sentiment
00:13:31
being very anti- Michel siani pertains
00:13:34
to they everybody thinks they know what
00:13:36
he is offensively they think he's
00:13:37
nothing offensively he's at a 593 Ops
00:13:40
this year uh he was really hitting his
00:13:42
stride right before the injury uh for
00:13:45
multi-month Pace had like a 275 batting
00:13:47
average which is pretty solid doesn't
00:13:49
hit for a ton of power has just two home
00:13:52
runs on the season in 284 plate
00:13:54
appearances to this point and the
00:13:57
batting average on the season is 245 so
00:13:59
light hitting still would definitely be
00:14:01
an app description for Michael canani
00:14:04
but what we've seen from him defensively
00:14:05
and I think there had been some growth
00:14:07
offensively this guy to me projects as
00:14:09
somebody that I'd like to see on the
00:14:11
Cardinals for a number of years ahead
00:14:13
however I think to get him in the lineup
00:14:16
every day and to be able to justify that
00:14:18
on a competitive winning team I think
00:14:20
the Ops has to at least start with a six
00:14:22
and ideally it's more than 60 it's 620
00:14:25
or 630 or 650 and then you're talking
00:14:27
about pushing him toward Tommy Edmond
00:14:30
territory offensively where Edmond's
00:14:31
like a 700 Ops guy although I just saw
00:14:33
he had a couple of home runs in one game
00:14:35
for the Dodgers that's cool we knew that
00:14:36
would happen I I said when the trade
00:14:38
happened Tommy Edmond will have a big
00:14:39
moment in the postseason for the Dodgers
00:14:41
and I still maintain that it is not
00:14:43
surprising to me at all to see Tommy
00:14:44
Edmond have success uh he's a good
00:14:46
player he wasn't healthy for a long long
00:14:48
time now he is and he's playing really
00:14:49
well and to me that's awesome to see but
00:14:52
when you look at the situation for
00:14:54
Michael canani I think he's a better
00:14:56
Defender than Tommy Edmond in center
00:14:57
field and
00:14:59
maybe about the same as far as a base
00:15:01
stealer um bunting is a very kind of low
00:15:05
grade category of consideration but
00:15:07
canani is better in that category
00:15:09
offense is really what you're lacking
00:15:11
with canani and because I think we saw a
00:15:13
good bit of run for him where maybe it
00:15:15
was the the babip batting average on
00:15:17
balls in play luck going in his favor
00:15:20
instead of maybe early on in the season
00:15:21
it went against him can's numbers
00:15:24
started to look better what does canani
00:15:27
where you find your level eventually
00:15:29
what's his level is it a 620 Ops is it a
00:15:31
600 Ops is it closer to the 575 580 Ops
00:15:36
where does that land um look I don't
00:15:38
think Michael C is a 700 Ops guy over
00:15:40
the course of a full Big League season
00:15:43
and I think Victor Scott thei is is
00:15:45
going to be I think he's got that
00:15:47
potential to be I don't think he's that
00:15:48
right now though either but again Mason
00:15:51
wi was a 470 Ops for 137 plate
00:15:54
appearances at the end of last season
00:15:56
and then interest instantly I should say
00:15:58
turn turned himself into a 720 Ops guy
00:16:01
that he is right now he's he's Ops in
00:16:03
728 he's a 270 hitter and his skills are
00:16:07
I know he's struggling a little bit at
00:16:09
the plate right now but his skills are
00:16:10
undeniable and he's going to be a
00:16:12
fixture for this team last 15 days
00:16:15
Mason's hitting 163 with a
00:16:18
461 Ops so he's definitely struggling a
00:16:21
little bit right now but my point is
00:16:23
like I don't want to read too much into
00:16:24
the Victor Scott numbers as a reason to
00:16:26
not play him because the numbers didn't
00:16:28
matter like last year for Mason win and
00:16:30
you saw how much of a benefit came from
00:16:31
that my other thought though is like I
00:16:33
am very much team Michael C I said I
00:16:35
think he should be on the team long term
00:16:37
but I don't know if you have to play
00:16:39
Michael CI every day right now to
00:16:41
demonstrate that you believe in him for
00:16:43
next year um as a fourth outfielder or
00:16:46
as somebody that could come into spring
00:16:48
with a chance to to win the job over
00:16:50
Victor Scott or whoever else is going to
00:16:52
be competing there for center field the
00:16:54
problem is both of these guys are
00:16:56
left-handed and they play a very similar
00:16:59
style of game I think that Victor Scott
00:17:01
has higher offensive potential I think
00:17:03
that right now canani might be the might
00:17:06
be the better uh better offensive player
00:17:10
like at this moment because I think he's
00:17:12
he's got a little bit more acclimated to
00:17:14
it Victor Scott I think is going to get
00:17:16
there and has the higher upside if
00:17:18
you're the Cardinal though as you're
00:17:19
like okay how do we allocate this
00:17:20
playing time down the stretch the the
00:17:23
reason they're doing it the way they're
00:17:24
doing it very well may be because they
00:17:26
already know Victor Scott as part of
00:17:27
their future and they might want to get
00:17:29
as much of a look at canani as they can
00:17:31
to determine all right is this somebody
00:17:33
that we can showcase for a trade is this
00:17:35
somebody that we keep around as a for
00:17:36
down Fielder you know what do we end up
00:17:38
doing because yes there is a redundancy
00:17:40
there with Scott and canani I personally
00:17:42
don't think you have to trade either of
00:17:43
them but if canani plays well down the
00:17:45
stretch and establishes that he's a
00:17:46
pretty good piece maybe the Cardinals
00:17:48
could get more out of him than you
00:17:49
thought and that's the way that they
00:17:50
decide to proceed and they move him or
00:17:53
maybe it's well there's not a lot of
00:17:54
value there but we do think he's got
00:17:56
value to our team if Victor Scott is
00:17:58
isn't ready and it it comes into Camp
00:18:00
next year is hey it's Victor Scott's
00:18:02
opportunity to to win the job if he can
00:18:04
and if he doesn't he starts at Triple A
00:18:06
which may be something that Victor Scott
00:18:08
still needs in 2025 or you know he can
00:18:11
start as as a a platoon or a time share
00:18:14
doesn't really make sense as a platoon
00:18:15
because they both hit left-handed with
00:18:17
seani in center field with the big leag
00:18:18
level like there's a lot of decisions I
00:18:21
I think the guy that makes sense to look
00:18:23
at is Victor Scott but I also understand
00:18:25
that prior to maybe the last literally
00:18:27
like the last handful of days
00:18:29
there was still that argument that the
00:18:30
Cardinals can try to win all their games
00:18:32
and make the playoffs I think that's
00:18:34
kind of gone the the L to the Reds is
00:18:36
what did it to me when I'm like all
00:18:38
right these Reds are pesky and you guys
00:18:40
can't seem to get hits off of them
00:18:41
certainly cannot seem to score off of
00:18:43
them and even with the pitching being
00:18:45
like you lose three nothing it's not
00:18:46
really the the pitching that you put
00:18:48
that game on to um Palante walks a bunch
00:18:50
of guys that's what he does it doesn't
00:18:52
bother me that he goes five innings
00:18:53
three earned runs while walking five and
00:18:56
allowing six hits that's 11 a lot more
00:18:58
than three runs are going to score most
00:18:59
of the time you give up 11 base runners
00:19:01
um Palante also struck out six I'm still
00:19:04
fine with Palante I'm fine with him for
00:19:05
now I'm fine with him for next year as
00:19:07
I'm doing this recording though the
00:19:09
Cardinals announced that Lance Lynn has
00:19:10
been activated from the injured list
00:19:12
which we knew was coming because he was
00:19:14
going to be Wednesday's starter
00:19:16
regardless it's Roy Croft that is
00:19:17
optioned to Memphis we won't have to
00:19:18
spend a lot of time on that necessarily
00:19:21
uh but just you know something to keep
00:19:22
in mind uh as we're kind of talking our
00:19:24
way through this team and and what they
00:19:26
want to do down the stretch because
00:19:27
Lance Lyn they're going to get a look at
00:19:28
at him but is it for just he's a veteran
00:19:31
so you you got to play him or is it well
00:19:33
do we want to pick up this option for
00:19:34
next year that we have on Lance ly how
00:19:36
do we look at Palante how do we look at
00:19:38
these guys that's happening in the
00:19:39
pitching staff and in the rotation and
00:19:41
the same that it's happening right now
00:19:43
uh with this center field
00:19:45
situation I think the way that I come
00:19:47
down on this is Victor Scott's long-term
00:19:50
part of the future they want to get a
00:19:51
longer look almost at canani to see what
00:19:53
his role could be and maybe to establish
00:19:55
trade value I'm fine with playing canani
00:19:57
though I would have liked to have seen
00:19:58
all marmal when both were up actually
00:20:00
play one in a corner uh and play the
00:20:02
other in center field and maybe Jordan
00:20:04
Walker is your right fielder and you can
00:20:06
have just Elite defensive left and
00:20:08
center field and kind of see the way
00:20:10
that that looks but they're not really
00:20:11
going to sit Lars Nar because the belief
00:20:13
is that he's still a big part of their
00:20:14
future as well which is he's a better
00:20:16
offensive player than vikor Scott or
00:20:18
Michael CI at this point so I I
00:20:20
understand it um the truth of the matter
00:20:22
is I I don't think you have to trade
00:20:23
canani or Victor Scott I could see that
00:20:26
there's going to be the impetus to do so
00:20:28
make the trade that makes the team
00:20:30
better don't make the trade just because
00:20:31
you felt like you had to would be my
00:20:33
kind of edict for the offseason but
00:20:35
they've got other out like Burleson
00:20:36
left-handed hitting outfielder maybe
00:20:38
he's going to play first base we'll see
00:20:39
what ends up happening with gold Schmid
00:20:40
who's still performing pretty well uh
00:20:42
was two for three with a walk in the
00:20:44
game last night Newar what do they what
00:20:46
is lar Newar is he going to ascend or is
00:20:48
he going to kind of be in this kind of
00:20:49
middle 730 Ops guy who you know you
00:20:53
can't always count on to be in the field
00:20:55
because he gets hurt a lot like what's
00:20:57
what's a longrange view on Newar Jordan
00:20:59
Walker what's what's the team going to
00:21:00
do with him he's still kind of
00:21:01
struggling but having some moments is he
00:21:04
a fixture part of the future or are they
00:21:06
going to miss the window with him and
00:21:08
and not be able to trade him for value
00:21:10
and maybe come back a couple years later
00:21:12
and wish that they had or do they still
00:21:13
believe in Jordan Walker who's still
00:21:15
very young like there's a lot of spots
00:21:17
on this Outfield group where you go
00:21:19
there's a lot of different things they
00:21:20
could do and one decision is going to
00:21:22
lead to the next lead to the next
00:21:24
they've got to they've got to plant
00:21:25
their flag somewhere I do think an
00:21:26
outfielder needs to be traded but you
00:21:29
come into the off season going oh my
00:21:30
gosh we got to trade an outfield because
00:21:32
these are all guys that you'd like to
00:21:33
think are valuable so you make the move
00:21:35
that can maybe get you something that
00:21:37
you need for something that you have
00:21:38
extra of but you also have all these
00:21:40
outfielders that none of them are really
00:21:41
proven I'm counting Nar within that I'm
00:21:43
counting Burleson within that like
00:21:45
they're having okay Seasons newars had
00:21:47
good seasons in the past but who are the
00:21:49
fixtures that you're going to build
00:21:50
around if you're the Cardinals I think
00:21:51
that's what needs to be decided they
00:21:53
might already think that Victor Scott is
00:21:54
one of them um it's just and maybe look
00:21:57
he he could come back up in a couple of
00:21:58
who knows maybe he'll still get some run
00:22:00
in the big leagues before the end of the
00:22:02
season but clearly they want to get a
00:22:03
look at Michael siani I think oi marmal
00:22:06
he still makes out the lineups and so he
00:22:07
wants to continue to see Michael C
00:22:09
because he trusts him out there um there
00:22:10
is still the implication of look we know
00:22:12
there's going to be changes in the org
00:22:14
but Alli MML is under contract has he
00:22:16
gotten the assurances of like look play
00:22:18
your lineup that we think you know is
00:22:20
going to help us win but also help us
00:22:22
develop because you should still be
00:22:23
caring about both things as the guy
00:22:25
who's going to be managing the team in
00:22:26
2025 when we do technically have a a
00:22:28
chance to make the playoffs like those
00:22:29
are sort of the things that you wonder
00:22:31
how how much you know input is being had
00:22:35
from the front office places and maybe
00:22:37
the answer is not very much they trust
00:22:39
Allie to do his job but when they see
00:22:41
he's choosing cani over Victor Scott
00:22:42
every day and not mixing it up at all
00:22:45
then it's like all right we got to make
00:22:45
sure this this kid gets some playing
00:22:47
time and look a decision that sounds
00:22:49
weird in the moment is still going to be
00:22:51
explained in a way that sounds like it
00:22:52
makes sense from the organizational
00:22:54
perspective and they said they believed
00:22:56
that even with Victor Scott not playing
00:22:58
him getting the instruction and
00:22:59
practicing on his Outfield routes and
00:23:01
everything like that before games was
00:23:04
better than him actually playing at the
00:23:06
minor league level and getting at bats
00:23:07
in everyday playing time that was the
00:23:09
way that the organization described it
00:23:11
and then obviously a few days later they
00:23:13
optioned him so you know was that the
00:23:15
truth was that not the truth maybe
00:23:17
sometimes it's just the way to explain
00:23:18
something maybe there's a little bit of
00:23:19
Truth to both like yes there is benefit
00:23:21
to this instruction but there's only so
00:23:22
many days in a row that it can benefit
00:23:24
you before it's like okay now go down
00:23:26
and try to implement it the best you can
00:23:27
in game action game speed at the minor
00:23:29
league level not going to be the same as
00:23:31
at the major league level but you're
00:23:33
just kind of working through with the
00:23:35
the best of what you got right now I
00:23:36
think is where the Cardinals are at with
00:23:38
some of these things so you guys let me
00:23:40
know on the the Victor Scott versus
00:23:42
Michael seani decision um I I think
00:23:45
Scott's role is if he comes into spring
00:23:47
next year and thrives he's going to have
00:23:49
a spot and he's going to play a bunch
00:23:50
whereas canani they they might be
00:23:52
showcasing for trade they might be
00:23:54
trying to figure out still what do they
00:23:56
make of him and is their value there and
00:23:57
is there somebody
00:23:59
um you know is that somebody that's just
00:24:00
going to be a fourth outfielder because
00:24:02
I think he could be very valuable in
00:24:03
that role could play any of the Outfield
00:24:05
spots can taken at bat late Off the
00:24:08
Bench but obviously the the bat is not a
00:24:11
strong suit of his game so defensive
00:24:13
replacement Off the Bench but we're
00:24:14
thinking in terms of a winning team a
00:24:16
team that's trying to make the playoffs
00:24:17
I think he's got a very nice role as a
00:24:19
you know a down bench guy on one of
00:24:21
those teams but for this Cardinal team
00:24:23
maybe not as much utility for what
00:24:25
Michael C is bringing unless he's in the
00:24:27
everyday lineup helping pitching staff
00:24:29
with his great defense um I like both
00:24:31
players I don't think the Cardinals have
00:24:32
to trade one or the other injuries do
00:24:34
happen but I understand where the
00:24:36
sentiment coming from about man this is
00:24:38
a team that right now should be getting
00:24:39
into the mode of uh looking ahead to
00:24:41
next year and Victor Scott playing the
00:24:43
way that Mason wi de did down the
00:24:45
stretch last year would probably be a
00:24:46
big benefit to his future but it's not
00:24:49
the decision the cardal are making at
00:24:51
this point in time let me know in the
00:24:52
comments below what you guys think about
00:24:53
that and we'll go down on the farm real
00:24:55
quick before we get out of here because
00:24:56
I want to tell you what Michael McGreevy
00:24:58
did did in his most recent
00:25:01
appearance it's time to go down on the
00:25:04
farm brought to you by Hastings layers
00:25:07
premium eggs you'll be happier in a
00:25:10
jackass eating thistle
00:25:14
huh Hastings layers premium eggs
00:25:16
appreciate you guys for your support of
00:25:18
down on the farm all season long let's
00:25:21
talk about Memphis and Michael
00:25:23
McGreevy a 5 to3 win for the Red Birds
00:25:26
over the Nashville Sounds yesterday at
00:25:27
that beautiful beautiful ballpark in
00:25:29
Nashville I love that Park I've been
00:25:30
there it's a great time Michael mcgrey
00:25:32
five innings three runs allowed they
00:25:34
were all earned allowed seven hits and a
00:25:36
couple of walks for strikeouts would
00:25:38
love to see McGreevy get a start at the
00:25:40
big league level before the season is
00:25:42
over but we'll see if there's room for
00:25:44
that because you're penciling Lance ly
00:25:46
back into the rotation that makes six
00:25:48
now as it is what will they do with
00:25:49
Plante we know that they've already kind
00:25:51
of shuffled Steven Matt into the bullpen
00:25:53
which I think is more than fine you kind
00:25:54
of already know what you have in him and
00:25:56
the decision should not be based on you
00:25:58
know whatever happens between now and
00:26:00
the end of the season on the Steven mats
00:26:02
front so I I think that's a reasonable
00:26:04
way to go about it but me mcgrey look
00:26:06
his numbers haven't been unbelievable
00:26:08
but they' been pretty good in Triple A
00:26:10
and we saw him look really really good
00:26:12
once in the big leagues and so you'd
00:26:16
like to think that the Cardinals could
00:26:17
find a way to reward that and maybe get
00:26:20
him back up here one more time before
00:26:22
the end of the season so we'll have to
00:26:24
see if that ends up happening uh 7 to3
00:26:26
the Springfield Cardinals got the win
00:26:28
over the San Antonio Missions and there
00:26:32
was not a lot really to write home about
00:26:35
that game uh Jimmy Crooks our catcher
00:26:37
down there that we like to talk about
00:26:38
was one for three also walked and he's
00:26:42
got a 321 average with a 915 Ops I think
00:26:44
Memphis will definitely be the spot for
00:26:46
him next year comar was the starting
00:26:48
pitcher did a nice job seven and two3
00:26:50
innings three runs allow with seven
00:26:53
strikeouts but that's kind of look at
00:26:55
the farm real quick before we go
00:26:56
appreciate you guys as always for
00:26:58
listening that is going to do it for
00:26:59
this edition of B shave daily and we'll
00:27:01
talk to you next time on the show peace
