  • 00:01:07
all right thank you so much brothers for
  • 00:01:10
coming with us this morning and taking
  • 00:01:12
the time to you know help enlighten our
  • 00:01:15
students with the work faith or
  • 00:01:18
work-life balance of the de la salle
  • 00:01:20
brothers so with that being said let's
  • 00:01:22
dive right into the first question
  • 00:01:24
    so from what i understand
  • 00:01:26
being a brother is not a quote unquote
  • 00:01:28
job but a way of life and a ministry so
  • 00:01:32
that said is there such a thing as
  • 00:01:33
separating your personal life from your
  • 00:01:35
life as a brother if there is how is
  • 00:01:38
    this done in your context
  • 00:01:41
i think for for the beginning of my own
  • 00:01:44
    journey as a brother
  • 00:01:45
    the work-life balance was difficult
  • 00:01:47
because normally the young brothers are
  • 00:01:50
    the workhorses
  • 00:01:52
    of the
  • 00:01:53
    of the school
  • 00:01:54
there's so much work that they give you
  • 00:01:56
a full teaching load campus ministry in
  • 00:01:59
smaller schools you have two or three
  • 00:02:02
jobs at the same time however i'm very
  • 00:02:05
    sure that the
  • 00:02:07
personal agenda and personal life is an
  • 00:02:10
important even in during those most
  • 00:02:12
    difficult days because
  • 00:02:14
they're also a good sense of support
  • 00:02:17
so when there's less work you seek more
  • 00:02:20
time for yourself so if there are phases
  • 00:02:23
    in a young brother's life where that's
  • 00:02:25
difficult but as i get older
  • 00:02:28
    you know
  • 00:02:29
i begin to see that there is importance
  • 00:02:33
    in having
  • 00:02:34
a real uh different set of friends
  • 00:02:38
    or a connection with older
  • 00:02:41
students that are now alumni that you
  • 00:02:44
continue to connect with and other
  • 00:02:46
friends outside of the school circle
  • 00:02:48
this is a good way in which
  • 00:02:51
you get a better perspective of how life
  • 00:02:53
is lived and you have a sense of
  • 00:02:55
    distance from the school
  • 00:02:56
    that can get very demanding
  • 00:02:59
in many times throughout the year
  • 00:03:04
think it's uh to me it's difficult to
  • 00:03:06
really separate my personal life and my
  • 00:03:09
    life as a brother
  • 00:03:12
because whether with a habit or not
  • 00:03:14
    whether it's a weekday or a weekend
  • 00:03:18
    my being a brother is
  • 00:03:20
    something i live for life
  • 00:03:22
    um
  • 00:03:23
    just the same
  • 00:03:25
    even if i try to
  • 00:03:28
live my life in a personal way
  • 00:03:31
outside work outside the ministry i
  • 00:03:33
still have my brother people still
  • 00:03:35
    recognize me as a brother
  • 00:03:37
    and
  • 00:03:39
    with that there are certain
  • 00:03:40
    responsibilities that i have to
  • 00:03:42
take your attention to because i am a
  • 00:03:45
brother whether with the habit or in
  • 00:03:46
    mind
  • 00:03:47
    [Music]
  • 00:03:49
all right thank you so much brothers i
  • 00:03:51
guess like any path anyone can take it
  • 00:03:54
    really takes
  • 00:03:55
it's a matter of getting used to
  • 00:03:57
uh dividing that work life and you know
  • 00:04:00
the personal life that you have for
  • 00:04:02
    yourself
  • 00:04:03
so cora i think we can move to the next
  • 00:04:05
    question
  • 00:04:06
yes so you did mention that
  • 00:04:10
    you have both
  • 00:04:11
your days spent as active brothers in
  • 00:04:14
the mission but you also have time for
  • 00:04:17
yourselves for your friends so how do
  • 00:04:19
you balance that your work as a brother
  • 00:04:22
and still maintain a social life and
  • 00:04:25
time for your family for your friends
  • 00:04:30
i think it's very important for us to
  • 00:04:32
    understand that
  • 00:04:34
you you have to schedule time for
  • 00:04:37
yourself with your friends it's like a
  • 00:04:39
    regular
  • 00:04:40
    work schedule
  • 00:04:41
some people fill their calendar with a
  • 00:04:43
    lot of work
  • 00:04:45
i also feed my calendar with not only
  • 00:04:47
work but also some obligations some
  • 00:04:50
    personal and social obligations
  • 00:04:53
there are some phases wherein you think
  • 00:04:55
    that
  • 00:04:56
it's just about school but there's also
  • 00:04:58
a chunk of time i give to myself and
  • 00:05:01
make sure that the weekends doesn't look
  • 00:05:04
like it's going to be work as well
  • 00:05:06
    then you blur it
  • 00:05:08
there's some days that the weekend flows
  • 00:05:10
uh the workflows into the weekend and
  • 00:05:14
after a while you don't like that to
  • 00:05:15
happen anymore you want your weekends
  • 00:05:18
really for yourself and i'm very
  • 00:05:20
    fortunate
  • 00:05:21
that uh there's a uh you have another
  • 00:05:24
property here the granada property which
  • 00:05:27
is an echo park a farm
  • 00:05:29
    and by padhasa
  • 00:05:31
and it's a very conducive environment
  • 00:05:33
    just to be
  • 00:05:34
    silencing and quieting yourself amidst
  • 00:05:36
nature so i look towards that time also
  • 00:05:39
    not only just
  • 00:05:41
having social life but having quiet time
  • 00:05:43
    by myself
  • 00:05:46
    there's one thing i learned
  • 00:05:48
as a brother through the years was that
  • 00:05:50
    it's important to set boundaries
  • 00:05:52
    boundaries between work
  • 00:05:54
    and
  • 00:05:55
    in my personal life
  • 00:05:58
for example specifically what i do at
  • 00:06:00
the end of the day i actually don't
  • 00:06:02
bring my laptop back in the community
  • 00:06:05
    because it
  • 00:06:06
gives me the temptation to reply to
  • 00:06:08
emails in the evening the privacy of my
  • 00:06:10
    own bedroom of which i
  • 00:06:12
i make sure that i avoid and or i don't
  • 00:06:15
    do
  • 00:06:17
at the end of the day it's really just
  • 00:06:18
    for myself
  • 00:06:21
    my community
  • 00:06:23
    doing things other than work
  • 00:06:26
while on a weekend i don't work at all
  • 00:06:29
    i
  • 00:06:30
    don't send emails i don't reply to
  • 00:06:32
emails unless it's really an emergency
  • 00:06:36
    i do
  • 00:06:37
    other things other than work
  • 00:06:40
    like my hobbies like
  • 00:06:43
catching up on my netflix shows and
  • 00:06:46
    things like that
  • 00:06:49
okay so i definitely relate to both of
  • 00:06:52
    the
  • 00:06:53
    sentiments shared here because honestly
  • 00:06:56
during this pandemic i've come to
  • 00:06:57
realize that your to-do list is not your
  • 00:07:00
wish list so it really is about saying
  • 00:07:03
yes to certain things and also knowing
  • 00:07:05
what to say no to and actually in
  • 00:07:08
relation to what you said i also have a
  • 00:07:10
    follow-up question if i may
  • 00:07:13
um are the brothers given the leeway to
  • 00:07:15
    experience other forms of recreation
  • 00:07:18
    other than your community organized
  • 00:07:20
gatherings such as maybe having a
  • 00:07:22
nightlife or other activities as well
  • 00:07:26
brother alex will answer that question
  • 00:07:29
    why me brother
  • 00:07:32
    uh
  • 00:07:32
    yeah
  • 00:07:34
    yeah because we're i know we're given
  • 00:07:37
we're given some leeway and freedom to
  • 00:07:40
    really
  • 00:07:42
and we're encouraged in fact to
  • 00:07:44
    to build on our hobbies
  • 00:07:46
and do other things that uh
  • 00:07:49
other than work right um so for example
  • 00:07:52
    here in the community
  • 00:07:53
    um
  • 00:07:54
four of us brothers here have pets it's
  • 00:07:57
like at the end of the day we
  • 00:07:59
    talk about pets we
  • 00:08:02
what we show off our pets and
  • 00:08:05
    things like that
  • 00:08:08
    in the weekend
  • 00:08:10
    i do yoga i uh
  • 00:08:12
i go out with friends because i'm i'm
  • 00:08:15
back here in holland where i was born
  • 00:08:17
and where i studied and finished my
  • 00:08:19
degree so so i'm pretty accessible to my
  • 00:08:22
friends and i ensure that at least you
  • 00:08:25
know some weekends i get to see them or
  • 00:08:27
    my family as well
  • 00:08:29
    so there's there's we're given the way
  • 00:08:32
    to
  • 00:08:33
    to
  • 00:08:35
building our hobbies and do other things
  • 00:08:38
because again work life balance is
  • 00:08:40
important not just for any professional
  • 00:08:43
    but for every person
  • 00:08:45
    and
  • 00:08:46
the brothers also see value in that
  • 00:08:49
    [Music]
  • 00:08:50
did i answer that right brother can yeah
  • 00:08:54
    [Applause]
  • 00:09:00
you know when you talk about night life
  • 00:09:01
    it's kind of different connotation
  • 00:09:03
sometimes you might mistake that night
  • 00:09:05
    life is an active life
  • 00:09:07
    but night life to me
  • 00:09:09
uh is really turning towards quieting
  • 00:09:12
myself after a busy day so what i
  • 00:09:14
normally do is i do some light exercise
  • 00:09:17
    in the morning
  • 00:09:18
or uh walk for about 30 minutes but as
  • 00:09:21
part of my winding down i swim for 30
  • 00:09:24
    minutes so i have a
  • 00:09:25
    if the day is okay
  • 00:09:27
i have a full hour of exercise and
  • 00:09:30
that's part of how i prepare for the
  • 00:09:32
    night
  • 00:09:33
10 seconds is basically i always have a
  • 00:09:36
    funny funny uh
  • 00:09:38
motivation i said happy hour brothers
  • 00:09:41
    happy hour so
  • 00:09:42
    6 pm
  • 00:09:45
and sometimes it's not only you know on
  • 00:09:47
weekends it's also on weekdays you know
  • 00:09:50
    so yeah
  • 00:09:51
i i try to have a bottle of beer and
  • 00:09:53
then i wind down about some pika pika
  • 00:09:55
    before dinner
  • 00:09:57
and uh actually i wind down with rosary
  • 00:10:00
because i am part of a rosary group that
  • 00:10:03
kind of support each other by praying
  • 00:10:05
the rosary my batch about four or four
  • 00:10:08
or six of us prayed the rosary and it's
  • 00:10:10
been a year and a half since the
  • 00:10:12
    pandemic
  • 00:10:15
so i'm sorry about that but uh
  • 00:10:18
it's about a year after the pandemic so
  • 00:10:21
    it's something that
  • 00:10:23
    supports me because
  • 00:10:25
    as a university administrator
  • 00:10:27
    [Music]
  • 00:10:30
    the problem has been
  • 00:10:32
    the stress
  • 00:10:34
    has been doubled
  • 00:10:37
doubled in a sense that we continue
  • 00:10:39
    education ministry
  • 00:10:41
    but the methodology
  • 00:10:44
    is now
  • 00:10:45
    quite distance
  • 00:10:47
it's no longer face to face
  • 00:10:49
so we have to work around that
  • 00:10:51
and that is very stressful not only for
  • 00:10:54
    students but
  • 00:10:55
    for staff teachers and administrators
  • 00:10:58
like so you have to make a real
  • 00:10:59
    commitment even more
  • 00:11:01
    for strengthening your own spiritual
  • 00:11:03
    personal life
  • 00:11:05
and that is my night out is that correct
  • 00:11:08
    brother alex
  • 00:11:10
i think i can relate brother because
  • 00:11:12
maybe when i was much younger
  • 00:11:15
night life had a certain connotation and
  • 00:11:17
was something that a young person would
  • 00:11:19
    sometimes you know
  • 00:11:21
desire or look forward to on the weekend
  • 00:11:24
on friday night or even thursday years
  • 00:11:26
    back
  • 00:11:28
    but now
  • 00:11:30
because it's pandemic and because i feel
  • 00:11:33
    like i've uh
  • 00:11:34
    i'm all matured in life
  • 00:11:37
it does not appeal to me that much
  • 00:11:38
anymore and like brother kenneth to be
  • 00:11:41
nightlife it's just you know being quiet
  • 00:11:44
yeah having a beer or two mixing my own
  • 00:11:47
cocktail drinks with brother kenneth and
  • 00:11:49
    during our happy hour
  • 00:11:51
and just lounging in the community or
  • 00:11:54
even have dinner outside i think that is
  • 00:11:56
    night life for us now
  • 00:11:58
i can't say much for the
  • 00:12:00
for the younger brothers who are much
  • 00:12:02
    younger than me
  • 00:12:04
    but uh
  • 00:12:06
    i think
  • 00:12:07
your idea once idea of a nightlife
  • 00:12:09
changes as the brother matures in his
  • 00:12:13
    location
  • 00:12:15
yeah i really like the sound of that
  • 00:12:17
    just knowing that
  • 00:12:19
the night doesn't have to be noisy for
  • 00:12:21
you to enjoy it so that's really
  • 00:12:24
beautiful thank you so much brothers for
  • 00:12:26
sharing and actually we have a next
  • 00:12:28
    question maggie
  • 00:12:30
all right thank you cora so we've been
  • 00:12:33
discussing the lives of the last few
  • 00:12:35
    questions now
  • 00:12:37
however there are some students who are
  • 00:12:39
probably curious about this does the
  • 00:12:41
lifestyle of brothers now differ from
  • 00:12:44
the lives of brothers from 100 years
  • 00:12:46
    back
  • 00:12:48
    brother
  • 00:12:49
    can answer that very well
  • 00:12:53
you know what i'm turning already um
  • 00:12:57
60 next year i'm already a dual citizen
  • 00:13:01
so that's why brother alex differs to me
  • 00:13:04
    however i wasn't a brother 100 years ago
  • 00:13:08
    the context definitely has changed
  • 00:13:10
    because communication
  • 00:13:12
    and lifestyles
  • 00:13:14
    and the environment has changed
  • 00:13:17
    a lot and
  • 00:13:18
that that is a big difference it's the
  • 00:13:20
    method the ease of travel
  • 00:13:23
the ease of uh the lifestyle
  • 00:13:26
    of people
  • 00:13:27
they completely change it's easier now
  • 00:13:30
to connect it's easier now to network
  • 00:13:33
    it's easier now
  • 00:13:35
to uh have a more convenient life
  • 00:13:38
so it has changed so if i were to enter
  • 00:13:41
    100 years ago i don't think i would have
  • 00:13:44
    the same
  • 00:13:45
    ease of traveling communicating and
  • 00:13:47
    connecting to people
  • 00:13:49
    and second i think
  • 00:13:51
    the church has also changed
  • 00:13:53
    you know
  • 00:13:54
if it's really listening on the ground
  • 00:13:57
    to what's happening
  • 00:13:58
the the policies and reflections of the
  • 00:14:01
    church will also change
  • 00:14:04
    with the time
  • 00:14:05
for the brothers i think i've seen i've
  • 00:14:07
    been a brother since 1986.
  • 00:14:11
so it's quite a long time ago when alex
  • 00:14:13
    was still uh an aspirant
  • 00:14:16
    so
  • 00:14:17
    in 1986
  • 00:14:19
the brothers also were only from the
  • 00:14:21
philippines we were only assigned in the
  • 00:14:23
    philippines
  • 00:14:24
we studied which studied in the states
  • 00:14:27
but now the brothers are all over asia
  • 00:14:31
    and are somewhat studying abroad
  • 00:14:33
but the region is now being populated by
  • 00:14:36
    filipino brothers
  • 00:14:38
in southeast asia that has changed
  • 00:14:41
so we've just not confined ourselves to
  • 00:14:43
being a filipino philippine district but
  • 00:14:46
    now are part of us
  • 00:14:48
    lasallian east asian district
  • 00:14:51
    to me i think it's it's
  • 00:14:53
the the lifestyle is more relaxed more
  • 00:14:56
    comfortable less structured
  • 00:14:59
    and more towards
  • 00:15:01
giving you the responsibility to live
  • 00:15:03
    your vocation
  • 00:15:05
    and to live in community
  • 00:15:07
    in a more fluid manner
  • 00:15:09
less trick so i would think that that is
  • 00:15:12
how i would think would be the main
  • 00:15:13
    difference
  • 00:15:15
and i agree with brother kenneth because
  • 00:15:17
through the years um the church has
  • 00:15:21
accommodated and has adjusted to the
  • 00:15:23
science of the times do know that
  • 00:15:27
de la salle during his time his ideas
  • 00:15:30
    were considered revolutionary and
  • 00:15:33
    innovative
  • 00:15:34
    meaning
  • 00:15:36
his ideas of innovating in the classroom
  • 00:15:39
    were something unheard of
  • 00:15:42
    and was considered
  • 00:15:45
out of this world even and
  • 00:15:47
that was something that attracted me to
  • 00:15:49
    brothers because i knew
  • 00:15:51
when i joined the brothers that this is
  • 00:15:53
a congregation that is very sensitive of
  • 00:15:56
the science of the times and will
  • 00:15:58
continue to adjust as the years progress
  • 00:16:02
the brothers i don't see the brothers to
  • 00:16:04
    be
  • 00:16:05
    very very traditional
  • 00:16:07
    and
  • 00:16:09
    by the book but
  • 00:16:11
correct with what brother kenneth said
  • 00:16:13
we're in information we're taught to
  • 00:16:15
live responsibly as a religious rather
  • 00:16:18
than being prescribed on how to live and
  • 00:16:21
    and what to do
  • 00:16:22
    so it's about having personal
  • 00:16:24
responsibility of our formation that is
  • 00:16:26
central in our formative years as a
  • 00:16:29
brother and i think that is something
  • 00:16:31
that we carry on with us and we carry
  • 00:16:33
with us as we go through our life as a
  • 00:16:35
    religious today
  • 00:16:38
all right thank you so much brothers
  • 00:16:40
actually it is very enlightening to see
  • 00:16:42
    how
  • 00:16:43
things definitely changed for the lives
  • 00:16:46
of the de la salle brothers throughout
  • 00:16:47
the decades and for even the past
  • 00:16:49
hundreds of years however we do have a
  • 00:16:51
follow up question to this although you
  • 00:16:54
said there are a lot of changes that
  • 00:16:56
have happened since then what do you
  • 00:16:58
what are the important things that have
  • 00:17:00
endured from back then up until today so
  • 00:17:03
like ways of life of the de la salle
  • 00:17:05
brothers or in terms of the mission that
  • 00:17:07
    you guys have
  • 00:17:10
i think what has changed is the
  • 00:17:12
foundation of vocation any vocation for
  • 00:17:15
    that matter
  • 00:17:16
    is a life of faith
  • 00:17:18
uh a commitment to this vocation
  • 00:17:22
to any christian vocation comes out of a
  • 00:17:24
    deep belief
  • 00:17:26
    that god loves us
  • 00:17:27
and at some point that love is
  • 00:17:31
    is shared to others
  • 00:17:32
    in a mission
  • 00:17:34
so i think that's very important the
  • 00:17:36
foundation of our vocation has not
  • 00:17:39
    changed
  • 00:17:40
    it's basically
  • 00:17:42
    expressed also through education
  • 00:17:44
    that service is that
  • 00:17:47
is the output of a life of faith
  • 00:17:50
    so
  • 00:17:51
uh in terms of personal lifestyle that
  • 00:17:53
    has changed
  • 00:17:55
the about uh the vocation as it lives
  • 00:17:57
    that has changed
  • 00:17:59
    but the way
  • 00:18:01
we start the day or start our own
  • 00:18:04
    inspiration
  • 00:18:05
    is basically
  • 00:18:07
a life of faith a life of trust and
  • 00:18:09
    confidence in god
  • 00:18:11
    and that hasn't changed
  • 00:18:16
and inspired by by that faith
  • 00:18:20
the brothers put premium on community
  • 00:18:22
    life
  • 00:18:23
    in
  • 00:18:24
    in
  • 00:18:25
through the years that hasn't changed
  • 00:18:27
    because
  • 00:18:29
community life is central to our
  • 00:18:32
    to our vocation
  • 00:18:34
    and
  • 00:18:36
    we do things in communion
  • 00:18:38
    amongst ourselves in our respective
  • 00:18:41
    communities
  • 00:18:42
at the same time we are sharing the
  • 00:18:44
mission with our partners with our
  • 00:18:47
associates with our stakeholders in the
  • 00:18:49
school um because the mission is
  • 00:18:52
something that is shared as a community
  • 00:18:54
of of lasallian so i think that hasn't
  • 00:18:57
    changed
  • 00:18:59
uh through the years but rather it has
  • 00:19:02
    given more emphasis in in
  • 00:19:06
we put more premium to it because
  • 00:19:08
we are we are a congregation of
  • 00:19:11
of brothers who live in a community as
  • 00:19:14
opposed to brothers living alone or by
  • 00:19:16
    ourselves
  • 00:19:17
so community life is central and i think
  • 00:19:19
that's also what attracted me to the
  • 00:19:21
brothers though it is not easy to live
  • 00:19:24
in community uh it's it's challenging uh
  • 00:19:27
i mean by the way challenging i mean if
  • 00:19:30
if you have troubles in your own home
  • 00:19:33
with your family uh how much more with
  • 00:19:36
brothers you hardly know or you didn't
  • 00:19:38
    grow up win
  • 00:19:40
but grace the grace of god is there
  • 00:19:45
your maturity as a religious is there
  • 00:19:49
your ideas of how to live and make
  • 00:19:51
    compromises and contribute to
  • 00:19:54
    making your community
  • 00:19:56
    healthier
  • 00:19:58
are there so so i think these are
  • 00:20:01
elements that make up a good community
  • 00:20:04
that we continue to live by
  • 00:20:06
    and that's why it's a happy community
  • 00:20:08
    here in bakalad
  • 00:20:13
thank you brothers i think the aspect of
  • 00:20:16
living in a community as the lasalle
  • 00:20:17
brothers was something that was actually
  • 00:20:20
    brought up in the
  • 00:20:22
so like like the previous brothers said
  • 00:20:24
there are the struggles and challenges
  • 00:20:26
in that aspect of their lives uh i think
  • 00:20:29
carl we can move to the next question
  • 00:20:31
    now
  • 00:20:32
yes so you did mention that
  • 00:20:34
you have your brother duties or your
  • 00:20:37
duties as brothers but what else do you
  • 00:20:39
    guys do outside of that
  • 00:20:43
    [Music]
  • 00:20:46
    outside of that
  • 00:20:48
uh first of all i just
  • 00:20:50
    if
  • 00:20:51
i don't want to dichotomize what i live
  • 00:20:54
as a brother and what i live in as a
  • 00:20:56
    brother and outside
  • 00:20:58
    um
  • 00:20:59
as i mentioned by alex it's difficult to
  • 00:21:01
remove my identity i travel and then
  • 00:21:04
    sometimes i travel by myself
  • 00:21:07
but even though nobody notices me and
  • 00:21:09
recognizes me as a brother i carry that
  • 00:21:12
    identity
  • 00:21:13
    but
  • 00:21:14
one of the things that's very very uh
  • 00:21:16
essential for me is that i like a lot of
  • 00:21:19
    time by myself
  • 00:21:21
    sometimes i'll be um
  • 00:21:23
in a house by myself for two or three
  • 00:21:25
    days
  • 00:21:26
i just be quiet just have just time to
  • 00:21:29
rest just time to pray just time to
  • 00:21:32
uh start my my usual email it just gives
  • 00:21:35
me a lot of energy to be by myself and
  • 00:21:38
    second i like to
  • 00:21:40
i like to also be in the beach and i
  • 00:21:43
think the brothers also like that we are
  • 00:21:45
because many of us are rich
  • 00:21:48
    brothers
  • 00:21:49
and uh we understand and we're also
  • 00:21:51
foodies because bacolod is known for
  • 00:21:54
    a great reasonable food
  • 00:21:56
we always also eat out so there's a lot
  • 00:21:59
    of agenda revolving around food
  • 00:22:01
and especially this christmas people are
  • 00:22:03
    giving us food so
  • 00:22:05
    to me
  • 00:22:06
it's been a very uh varied and rich life
  • 00:22:10
and then i also regularly connect to my
  • 00:22:12
own family some people think that when
  • 00:22:14
you leave the brothers you need totally
  • 00:22:16
the family but uh it may be true when
  • 00:22:19
you're a young brother because of your
  • 00:22:20
business but as you get older you
  • 00:22:23
    reconnect with family
  • 00:22:25
    and they
  • 00:22:26
you find a new role in the family
  • 00:22:29
you know so that makes sense to us as we
  • 00:22:32
grow older as a family then you become a
  • 00:22:35
    sort of um
  • 00:22:37
a support role to the family uh a
  • 00:22:40
spiritual road to the family so it's
  • 00:22:42
    becomes uh
  • 00:22:44
    integral that you also
  • 00:22:46
now that you have a little bit more time
  • 00:22:48
you try to be there for the family
  • 00:22:50
and not really like before when you were
  • 00:22:53
younger you used to forget about that
  • 00:22:55
    but
  • 00:22:56
now there's a real need to connect to
  • 00:22:58
    others
  • 00:23:00
    and to family as well
  • 00:23:03
    free pandemic
  • 00:23:05
during weekends i enjoy eating alone
  • 00:23:08
i enjoy being alone in fact
  • 00:23:11
    i go out
  • 00:23:13
    discover a new place
  • 00:23:15
    try the food
  • 00:23:16
criticize it post it in instagram
  • 00:23:19
    and
  • 00:23:20
say whether it's delicious or not
  • 00:23:22
    or i
  • 00:23:24
watch movies by myself and i enjoy
  • 00:23:27
    watching
  • 00:23:29
movies in the cinema alone i think my
  • 00:23:32
    weekends are my me weekends
  • 00:23:36
    that was pretty pandemic
  • 00:23:38
    when the pandemic came
  • 00:23:42
    when borders were freer
  • 00:23:45
i go to the beach with friends
  • 00:23:48
drive around maybe to tagaytay and back
  • 00:23:53
    for
  • 00:23:53
no reason but just to get some air and
  • 00:23:57
    go back to community
  • 00:23:58
um here in bakula yes but i cannot
  • 00:24:01
    mention that we do
  • 00:24:03
    love to eat because
  • 00:24:05
food is very good in bakola so we try to
  • 00:24:08
    discover new places
  • 00:24:09
either as a community or by ourselves
  • 00:24:13
i mentioned i do yoga every saturday
  • 00:24:16
    that's with a
  • 00:24:17
    group of uh
  • 00:24:19
friends in high school and college
  • 00:24:21
    and
  • 00:24:23
we go to the beach we're beach brothers
  • 00:24:26
    here and
  • 00:24:27
    [Music]
  • 00:24:28
a few weeks ago maybe two weeks ago we
  • 00:24:30
were in the beach twice in a week so
  • 00:24:34
    hence our dark complexion
  • 00:24:36
    so there you go
  • 00:24:39
    well it sounds like
  • 00:24:41
    this conversation that we're having
  • 00:24:43
right now is helping to debunk a lot of
  • 00:24:45
    misconceptions
  • 00:24:46
or even stereotypes of what it's like to
  • 00:24:49
live a religious vocation because i know
  • 00:24:52
that some people have the idea that once
  • 00:24:54
    you're
  • 00:24:55
in a religious vocation you don't get to
  • 00:24:58
do certain things like you used to
  • 00:25:00
before or that you don't get to spend as
  • 00:25:02
much time with the people you grew up
  • 00:25:04
loving and the people that you make
  • 00:25:06
    connections with so
  • 00:25:08
    with that said
  • 00:25:09
what in the life actually of a brother
  • 00:25:12
did you initially think was true but
  • 00:25:15
turned out to be different when you
  • 00:25:17
    became one
  • 00:25:18
    oh
  • 00:25:20
    difficult question
  • 00:25:23
    loaded
  • 00:25:24
    [Laughter]
  • 00:25:25
brother alex you gotta go ahead
  • 00:25:30
can i say there was none because when i
  • 00:25:33
was in high school and college when i
  • 00:25:36
was an aspirant the brother who mentored
  • 00:25:38
    me
  • 00:25:40
    pretty much exposed me to
  • 00:25:42
the other things a brother can do
  • 00:25:45
    um
  • 00:25:46
i did live with the brothers in their
  • 00:25:48
community when i was in college
  • 00:25:50
regularly that's one week every month
  • 00:25:53
that was when brother kenneth was also
  • 00:25:55
    here then
  • 00:25:56
    um
  • 00:25:59
yet this brother who mentored me and who
  • 00:26:01
is now my godfather in the religious
  • 00:26:03
    life uh
  • 00:26:06
introduced me to other things to other
  • 00:26:08
things that the brother can do
  • 00:26:11
    um
  • 00:26:12
    while
  • 00:26:14
would be shocking for some but made me
  • 00:26:16
realize that brothers are human beings
  • 00:26:19
    too
  • 00:26:20
    that
  • 00:26:21
while they live in community they have
  • 00:26:22
    friends outside well they pray
  • 00:26:26
    through structured prayers through a
  • 00:26:28
    schedule following a schedule
  • 00:26:31
outside schedule they're pretty much on
  • 00:26:33
their own but they're very responsible
  • 00:26:35
with how they conduct themselves in
  • 00:26:37
    public
  • 00:26:39
    because whether personal or are
  • 00:26:42
    as a religious
  • 00:26:44
to dichotomize that is tricky and
  • 00:26:47
    it's difficult to do
  • 00:26:49
    but
  • 00:26:50
i've seen that the brothers are
  • 00:26:52
    are
  • 00:26:53
human beings in in aside from community
  • 00:26:57
what attracted me to the brothers is
  • 00:26:59
    that they're very human
  • 00:27:01
    and if they weren't
  • 00:27:02
as human as i i perceived them to be i
  • 00:27:06
wouldn't be with them right now
  • 00:27:09
thanks to brother kenneth he was there
  • 00:27:11
    yeah
  • 00:27:16
    you know what
  • 00:27:17
you have to figure this as part of a
  • 00:27:19
    journey
  • 00:27:21
    partly because
  • 00:27:22
    from the very beginning
  • 00:27:24
i felt i was very much of an introvert
  • 00:27:26
nobody believes that because i've always
  • 00:27:28
    been
  • 00:27:29
    out there
  • 00:27:31
saying so many things but you know for
  • 00:27:33
    an introvert to be
  • 00:27:35
playing the role of an extrovert is
  • 00:27:37
    extremely tiring
  • 00:27:39
    so as you move in
  • 00:27:42
that the introversion becomes a second
  • 00:27:45
    nature
  • 00:27:46
and you don't figure out that you have
  • 00:27:49
to uh compromise your personality so we
  • 00:27:52
have young brothers who have played
  • 00:27:53
    their introversion uh a lot
  • 00:27:56
uh despite a very public figure
  • 00:27:59
    uh
  • 00:28:00
    so
  • 00:28:00
    however there is
  • 00:28:02
    some expectation
  • 00:28:04
that has changed over the years partly
  • 00:28:06
    because
  • 00:28:07
    as an introvert
  • 00:28:09
pardon your voice is not as strong and
  • 00:28:12
    as confident
  • 00:28:14
but as you grow older because you stay
  • 00:28:17
    longer
  • 00:28:18
much longer than bra and brother alex
  • 00:28:21
i've stayed a little bit longer
  • 00:28:23
your voice becomes stronger because you
  • 00:28:25
    feel that
  • 00:28:26
    uh you're
  • 00:28:28
    one you're one
  • 00:28:32
    good voice
  • 00:28:33
    and you're that
  • 00:28:35
the voice of the spear is another good
  • 00:28:37
    voice you don't feel
  • 00:28:40
    a sense of
  • 00:28:41
    you're being diminished because you're
  • 00:28:43
    not the religious superior or
  • 00:28:46
you're not the director but you have a
  • 00:28:48
you feel confident that you have now a
  • 00:28:50
    voice
  • 00:28:52
whereas when you were younger because
  • 00:28:54
you were introvert your voice was sort
  • 00:28:56
of muffled by your invision and
  • 00:28:59
    insecurity
  • 00:29:01
    so in a sense
  • 00:29:03
it's not the brothers that change it's
  • 00:29:04
    you that changing
  • 00:29:07
    so it makes sense that
  • 00:29:09
the brothers are moving but you're also
  • 00:29:11
moving so it's kind of difficult to say
  • 00:29:14
what were your expectations and what
  • 00:29:16
    changed because you're both moving
  • 00:29:19
    that's true you're not you're not
  • 00:29:21
it's like your family's role today
  • 00:29:24
    10 years
  • 00:29:25
moving forward or 10 years before it was
  • 00:29:28
your you're on different ground together
  • 00:29:32
so how can you say that uh things have
  • 00:29:34
    changed
  • 00:29:35
and while they are also changing
  • 00:29:38
so it's quite it's quite a very fluid
  • 00:29:41
    and dynamic environment
  • 00:29:43
    and um
  • 00:29:45
and i think we're just probably
  • 00:29:47
    calibrating our responses every time
  • 00:29:50
    based on what the environment
  • 00:29:54
thank you so much brothers that was
  • 00:29:56
    nothing chance well
  • 00:29:58
    yes
  • 00:29:59
definitely some food for thought brother
  • 00:30:02
    [Music]
