TLDRIn this Apple Weekly episode, Brandon goes over the latest updates in the Apple ecosystem, specifically the releases and news surrounding iOS 18.2 and 18.3 beta updates. He discusses the ongoing delay of CarPlay 2.0, noting it is likely due to automaker approvals rather than Apple. The iPhone SE4 might receive a rebranding, potentially being named iPhone 16e, alongside design updates borrowing from the iPhone 14. Apple is also addressing its criticized Magic Mouse by designing a new model that moves the charging port and integrates touch and voice controls. The discussion touches on device support for iOS 19, Apple TV Plus's free weekend, and an AirTag-related crime story where a stolen bike with an AirTag attached was quickly recovered by police. The episode rounds out with a look at some upcoming products, including iPhones with potentially higher refresh rates and new MacBook Air models.

Brandon introduces the episode focusing on updates about iOS 18.2 and 18.3 beta, issues around Carplay 2.0, Apple's fixes for controversial products, and potential changes to the iPhone SE naming. He mentions minimal updates in iOS 18.3 beta 1 and improvements in notification summaries, hinting at plans for the next bigger updates (iOS 18.4). Carplay 2.0 has seen no progress due to automaker delays, not Apple's fault entirely; speculation arises regarding its future.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

Many states are set to adopt Apple's digital driver's license feature, with seven new states potentially supporting it soon. iOS 19 might support all devices from iOS 18, amid expectations for a stability-focused update. Apple TV Plus offers a free viewing weekend, highlighting shows like Severance. iOS 18.3 beta 1 shows performance stability compared to 18.2, though battery life is unimpressive. Upcoming updates include iOS 18.2.1 and iOS 18.3 beta 2, anticipated soon with minor fixes.

what's up guys my name is Brandon and
  • 00:00:01
welcome back to Apple weekly in this
  • 00:00:03
episode we're going to discuss the
  • 00:00:05
latest on iOS 18.2 and 18.3 beta we're
  • 00:00:09
going to talk about what happened to
  • 00:00:11
    carplay 2.0 updates on iOS 19 Apple's
  • 00:00:15
fix for one of their most controversial
  • 00:00:17
products the iPhone se4 might not be
  • 00:00:19
called the iPhone se4 a crazy air tag
  • 00:00:22
story and more and as always if you want
  • 00:00:24
to stay updated with everything going on
  • 00:00:26
in the world of Apple be sure to hit
  • 00:00:27
that subscribe button down below okay so
  • 00:00:29
first off happy New Year happy 2025 this
  • 00:00:32
is the first video of 2025 and you know
  • 00:00:35
this week has been slow for Apple we
  • 00:00:37
didn't see anything released as usual so
  • 00:00:40
we are going to see new updates and
  • 00:00:42
apple get back into the swing of things
  • 00:00:43
starting next week and we'll talk more
  • 00:00:45
about that later on in this video but as
  • 00:00:47
of right now the latest public iOS
  • 00:00:50
release is IOS 18.2 which was a big
  • 00:00:52
update where we got a lot of new Apple
  • 00:00:54
intelligence features and just a lot of
  • 00:00:56
big features in general I did make a
  • 00:00:58
video on that here the channel now as
  • 00:01:00
far as the latest beta goes that is IOS
  • 00:01:04
    18.3 beta 1 and that's a relatively
  • 00:01:07
minor update we didn't really see much
  • 00:01:09
included in beta 1 aside from if you go
  • 00:01:12
    into your settings accessibility and
  • 00:01:14
then go down here you will see a new
  • 00:01:16
glyph icon here for the camera control
  • 00:01:19
but other than that really minor changes
  • 00:01:21
in 18.3 beta 1 however we did see an
  • 00:01:24
update from shrimp Apple Pro over on X
  • 00:01:27
he did post this about something that's
  • 00:01:29
been updated with apple intelligence the
  • 00:01:31
Apple intelligence model so he says that
  • 00:01:34
the model responsible for these sketch
  • 00:01:36
features is now working as is skin tone
  • 00:01:38
for Gen emoji and also updates for
  • 00:01:41
    notification summaries however you can
  • 00:01:43
see in the replies here it looks like
  • 00:01:45
these sketch changes and the Jin Emoji
  • 00:01:48
    changes were actually added previously
  • 00:01:50
so really the only thing new here
  • 00:01:52
appears to be updates to the
  • 00:01:54
notification summaries if you remember a
  • 00:01:56
few weeks ago I talked about how that
  • 00:01:58
was a big deal because the BBC even put
  • 00:02:01
    out an article basically ridiculing
  • 00:02:03
Apple for the notification summaries and
  • 00:02:05
how it can be kind of misleading for
  • 00:02:07
people to see a summarized version of
  • 00:02:09
their notification where it might not be
  • 00:02:11
entirely the truth so maybe Apple
  • 00:02:13
started changing and kind of tweaking
  • 00:02:15
the model to make it a little bit better
  • 00:02:17
and maybe less misleading for specific
  • 00:02:19
scenarios especially when it comes to
  • 00:02:21
news applications and news you know
  • 00:02:23
reports so if you're somebody who has
  • 00:02:25
not been the biggest fan of the
  • 00:02:26
    notification summaries you might be
  • 00:02:28
seeing an improvement with with 18.3 and
  • 00:02:31
I am starting to test this on my main
  • 00:02:33
device I did just recently upgrade or
  • 00:02:36
update my main device to iOS 18.3 beta 1
  • 00:02:40
after being on 18.2 for quite some time
  • 00:02:43
so I am going to test to see if there's
  • 00:02:44
any change in the notification summaries
  • 00:02:47
but as far as anything else goes in
  • 00:02:48
terms of features in 18.3 beta 1 we
  • 00:02:51
don't really have much but again we are
  • 00:02:53
expecting a pretty minor update for 18.3
  • 00:02:56
because iOS 18.4 is going to be the big
  • 00:02:59
update with the big Siri changes and
  • 00:03:01
some other Apple intelligence changes as
  • 00:03:03
well but in the meantime we are most
  • 00:03:05
likely going to see an 18.2.1 so this
  • 00:03:09
was reported by Mac Rumors this was
  • 00:03:11
showing up in their analytics so it
  • 00:03:12
looks like an 18.2.1 is coming as is of
  • 00:03:16
course iOS 18.3 beta 2 we should be
  • 00:03:19
seeing that again next week and we'll
  • 00:03:21
talk about that in a moment so those are
  • 00:03:24
    highly anticipated but something else
  • 00:03:26
that was highly anticipated but did not
  • 00:03:27
end up coming at all is carplay 2.0 so
  • 00:03:30
Apple said that carplay the next
  • 00:03:32
generation of carplay is coming in 2024
  • 00:03:35
but it's now 2025 and there's not one
  • 00:03:38
vehicle that supports it now of course
  • 00:03:40
this is not entirely Apple's fault Apple
  • 00:03:42
most likely has the software pretty much
  • 00:03:44
done I mean it didn't really take much
  • 00:03:46
on apples and it doesn't seem like but
  • 00:03:48
there's of course a big you know laundry
  • 00:03:50
list of I'm sure you know regulations
  • 00:03:53
and different people to go through to
  • 00:03:55
get this approved so I'm sure this Falls
  • 00:03:57
more on the automakers than it does on
  • 00:03:59
    app
  • 00:04:00
however that makes me wonder why Apple
  • 00:04:02
even published a date to begin with so
  • 00:04:04
it's really interesting to see that and
  • 00:04:06
you know Porsche and ask the Martin were
  • 00:04:08
the first two uh car makers to actually
  • 00:04:10
say they are going to support carplay
  • 00:04:12
2.0 however we have not seen anything
  • 00:04:15
and we did see recently within the past
  • 00:04:16
few months that Porsche you know
  • 00:04:18
    basically commented and said they're
  • 00:04:20
sticking with regular carplay for the
  • 00:04:22
foreseeable future so we're not sure if
  • 00:04:24
    carplay 2.0 has been completely
  • 00:04:25
cancelled or what but you know it's kind
  • 00:04:27
of you know it's kind of turning into
  • 00:04:29
air power at this point not really the
  • 00:04:30
same because it's not Apple's core
  • 00:04:32
product it's really on the automakers as
  • 00:04:34
well but you know what I mean it's it's
  • 00:04:36
it's pretty interesting that we're not
  • 00:04:37
really hearing anything about it for the
  • 00:04:39
second year in a row and speaking of
  • 00:04:41
cars we might be seeing more States at
  • 00:04:43
the Apple driver's license feature the
  • 00:04:45
state ID feature pretty soon so if you
  • 00:04:47
go into your wallet and go to the plus
  • 00:04:49
right here and go to driver's license or
  • 00:04:51
state ID you can see these are the
  • 00:04:53
    current supported States for the
  • 00:04:55
driver's license or state ID where it
  • 00:04:57
can just be on your iPhone and can
  • 00:04:59
present that to TSA agents however we're
  • 00:05:02
seeing now that this will be coming to
  • 00:05:04
seven states pretty soon so this is put
  • 00:05:07
together by you know Mac rumors and
  • 00:05:09
hopefully this happens in 2025 but
  • 00:05:11
there's not a definitive date for this
  • 00:05:13
but you can see here what those states
  • 00:05:15
are so it's Montana West Virginia
  • 00:05:18
    Connecticut Kentucky Mississippi
  • 00:05:20
Oklahoma and Utah and then here's a list
  • 00:05:23
of the TSA checkpoints within the US
  • 00:05:26
where this is accepted and you can see
  • 00:05:28
that that number is growing as well so I
  • 00:05:31
can't wait to try this of course we
  • 00:05:32
don't have Florida just yet but if
  • 00:05:34
you're on here or if you're one of those
  • 00:05:35
    states where it's coming soon
  • 00:05:37
    congratulations this feature seems
  • 00:05:38
pretty awesome especially if you travel
  • 00:05:40
often now we also recently heard that
  • 00:05:42
iOS 19 could potentially support all
  • 00:05:44
devices that were supported with iOS 18
  • 00:05:47
which wouldn't be a big surprise
  • 00:05:49
especially if it turns out to be a more
  • 00:05:51
you know bug fix you know stability type
  • 00:05:53
update which we hear about that all the
  • 00:05:55
time who knows if that'll actually
  • 00:05:56
happen but we are hearing that all
  • 00:05:58
devices will be supported once again so
  • 00:06:01
that's going to be pretty good news if
  • 00:06:03
you are on an older device on iOS 18 but
  • 00:06:05
of course it's too early to tell just
  • 00:06:07
yet these rumors are really just guesses
  • 00:06:10
at this point now if you have some free
  • 00:06:11
time this weekend you will definitely
  • 00:06:13
want to take advantage of the free
  • 00:06:15
weekend for Apple TV plus yes for the
  • 00:06:17
first time ever Apple TV plus will be
  • 00:06:20
free from January 3rd through January
  • 00:06:24
5th and the cool thing about this is
  • 00:06:25
that it's completely free without any
  • 00:06:27
type of limits you can watch any movie
  • 00:06:29
any TV show as many times as you want
  • 00:06:32
this weekend which is awesome and if
  • 00:06:34
you've not watched any Apple TV Plus
  • 00:06:36
shows I have some recommendations number
  • 00:06:39
one would be shrinking number two would
  • 00:06:41
be Silo and number three is my favorite
  • 00:06:43
right here which is Severance season 2
  • 00:06:45
is coming out on January 17th but
  • 00:06:47
Severance is a phenomenal show so I
  • 00:06:50
    really like those three Severance
  • 00:06:51
shrinking and Silo all great and those
  • 00:06:54
are just for you know TV shows we also
  • 00:06:55
have movies in here you can watch as
  • 00:06:57
well but enjoy that free weekend if if
  • 00:06:59
you have not you know already subscribed
  • 00:07:01
to Apple TV plus anyways back to iOS
  • 00:07:03
18.3 beta 1 here I did want to talk
  • 00:07:05
about the performance in the battery
  • 00:07:07
life so I did run a fresh geekbench test
  • 00:07:09
here so you can see we scored a 3576 on
  • 00:07:12
the single core 8903 on the multicore so
  • 00:07:15
this is on iOS 18.3 beta 1 and you can
  • 00:07:18
see quite a bit of time between the last
  • 00:07:20
test on December 20th through January
  • 00:07:23
3rd right here so we did have a higher
  • 00:07:25
score for single core and much higher
  • 00:07:28
for multicore there for beta 1 which is
  • 00:07:31
a good sign 18.3 beta 1 feels fine again
  • 00:07:34
I did install it on my main device as
  • 00:07:35
well and I can confirm that it feels
  • 00:07:38
pretty much the same as 18.2 for me
  • 00:07:40
which is great and as far as battery
  • 00:07:42
life goes battery life is not as good as
  • 00:07:44
it was on iOS 18.2 the final you know
  • 00:07:46
public release which is expected I'm not
  • 00:07:48
really you know too surprised by that
  • 00:07:51
but battery life is just not great here
  • 00:07:53
on this first beta so I do hope to see
  • 00:07:54
that get improved with time and
  • 00:07:57
hopefully with beta 2 as well so you can
  • 00:07:59
see what this is looking like on my main
  • 00:08:01
device so I actually installed iOS
  • 00:08:04
18.3 beta 1 on my main device right here
  • 00:08:07
on Tuesday now as far as what to expect
  • 00:08:10
next from Apple the next public release
  • 00:08:12
like I mentioned earlier will most
  • 00:08:13
    likely be iOS
  • 00:08:15
18.2.1 and I would expect that as early
  • 00:08:19
as next week I think as early as Monday
  • 00:08:22
January 6th we could see iOS 18.2.1 get
  • 00:08:26
released now those 0.1 or those double
  • 00:08:29
Point updates like0 2.1 those are always
  • 00:08:31
just going to be bug fix updates
  • 00:08:33
security patch updates you're not going
  • 00:08:34
to see any new features in that update
  • 00:08:37
now as far as the betas we should see
  • 00:08:39
iOS 18.3 beta 2 come next week as well
  • 00:08:44
the week of January 6th we could even
  • 00:08:46
see it on January 6th or on the 7th
  • 00:08:49
right there so those are the two we're
  • 00:08:51
expecting and as far as 18.3 the final
  • 00:08:54
release we should see that in the end of
  • 00:08:56
    January or potentially even early
  • 00:08:59
February Ary all right so now let's move
  • 00:09:00
on to the latest Apple news and let's
  • 00:09:02
start with Apple's potential fix for
  • 00:09:05
    their most controversial SL criticized
  • 00:09:07
product in recent times and that is the
  • 00:09:10
    Magic Mouse more specifically the
  • 00:09:12
charging port on the Magic Mouse so we
  • 00:09:14
might be seeing a fix for that because
  • 00:09:16
according to a new report apple is
  • 00:09:18
working on a redesigned Magic Mouse that
  • 00:09:20
    will address some long-standing
  • 00:09:22
complaints including the location of the
  • 00:09:25
charging port and a separate report says
  • 00:09:27
that a prototype of this new Mouse has
  • 00:09:29
already been designed and it adds a
  • 00:09:32
mixture of touch voice controls and hand
  • 00:09:34
gestures so voice control on a mouse
  • 00:09:37
would be awesome especially for today's
  • 00:09:39
workflows with AI and you know
  • 00:09:41
    transcription and dictation and things
  • 00:09:43
like that it would be awesome just be
  • 00:09:44
able to press down on your mouse and you
  • 00:09:46
know speak without having to touch your
  • 00:09:47
keyboard so that sounds awesome and Mark
  • 00:09:49
Gman appears to think so as well so he
  • 00:09:52
chimed in on this on X by saying Voice
  • 00:09:54
Control in the new Magic Mouse I wrote
  • 00:09:56
about this month makes sense in light of
  • 00:09:58
AI and the fact that apple is on a
  • 00:10:00
decade plus cycle from what I've heard
  • 00:10:03
big focus is ergonomics and gestures
  • 00:10:05
    relocated USBC 2 I'd expect a new
  • 00:10:08
keyboard too but that might not be
  • 00:10:10
coming in 2025 because this report does
  • 00:10:13
say that this will be released alongside
  • 00:10:16
the upcoming M6 OLED MacBook Pro in 2026
  • 00:10:21
    I don't know why a mouse and a keyboard
  • 00:10:23
would be released alongside a Macbook
  • 00:10:25
that doesn't make sense unless there's
  • 00:10:26
other products as well so really you
  • 00:10:29
know who knows at this point when it's
  • 00:10:30
going to come but hopefully it does come
  • 00:10:32
within the next 24 months okay so now
  • 00:10:34
let's talk about the iPhone se4 because
  • 00:10:37
most likely we are just a couple of
  • 00:10:39
months away from seeing the release of
  • 00:10:41
Apple's next generation iPhone SE model
  • 00:10:44
however it might not actually be called
  • 00:10:46
the iPhone se4 and that's because
  • 00:10:48
according to a source which magin Buu
  • 00:10:50
reported on here he says that it seems
  • 00:10:52
that the new iPhone that Apple will
  • 00:10:54
unveil in 2025 will not be called iPhone
  • 00:10:57
    sc4 but iPhone
  • 00:10:59
16e it should feature a design similar
  • 00:11:02
to the iPhone 14 with an OLED display
  • 00:11:05
and an action button the available
  • 00:11:07
colors will be white and black and he
  • 00:11:09
shares that alongside what appears to be
  • 00:11:11
a design file for a case for this iPhone
  • 00:11:14
16e and later on he did post a clear
  • 00:11:17
case here showing the iPhone se4 16e in
  • 00:11:22
this you know short little video here
  • 00:11:24
but as far as the naming scheme overall
  • 00:11:26
goes I think that 16e makes a lot more
  • 00:11:28
sense than se4 I mean especially if it's
  • 00:11:31
going to have a similar design to the
  • 00:11:33
iPhone 16 I say similar you know cuz the
  • 00:11:36
iPhone 14 and iPhone 16 do look pretty
  • 00:11:38
similar so it's going to have a similar
  • 00:11:39
design to the 16 also if it's going to
  • 00:11:41
be priced a little bit more than
  • 00:11:43
previous iPhone SE models which which we
  • 00:11:45
are hearing that as well then 16e makes
  • 00:11:48
more sense it's going to make people
  • 00:11:49
feel like they're getting a newer phone
  • 00:11:51
and not the little cheap SE phone you
  • 00:11:53
know what I mean I think 16e makes it
  • 00:11:54
sound more premium and makes it sound
  • 00:11:56
more upto-date than the se4 guys so I
  • 00:11:59
don't know that's just my take on it and
  • 00:12:01
we'll have to wait and see if this
  • 00:12:02
actually does end up coming true because
  • 00:12:05
you know mag and Buu does have a mixed
  • 00:12:07
track record at least his sources have a
  • 00:12:09
mixed track record and it's it's pretty
  • 00:12:10
hard to predict something that's you
  • 00:12:12
know a marketing name as well since
  • 00:12:14
that's not necessarily always going on
  • 00:12:16
in the factory leaks but as far as the
  • 00:12:17
iPhone coming later this year the iPhone
  • 00:12:19
17 we also got another report that says
  • 00:12:22
that the base model iPhone 17 will have
  • 00:12:26
a higher refresh rate than 60 hurts so
  • 00:12:29
this comes from digital chat solution
  • 00:12:32
over on weo and they said that supply
  • 00:12:35
    chain materials corroborate rumors about
  • 00:12:38
a higher refresh rate display on the 17
  • 00:12:41
and 17 plus but it did not say
  • 00:12:44
specifically if it's going to be 120
  • 00:12:46
Herz or something lower and I say 17
  • 00:12:48
plus but this year we might be seeing
  • 00:12:50
the 17 air so we don't know what Apple's
  • 00:12:52
going to call it yet whether they're
  • 00:12:53
going to ditch the 17 plus in favor of
  • 00:12:55
the air we really don't know this year
  • 00:12:57
there's really a lot more unknown than
  • 00:12:59
usual when it comes to the iPhones at
  • 00:13:01
least this far in advance we don't
  • 00:13:03
usually know much but this year seems a
  • 00:13:04
little bit more you know confusing than
  • 00:13:06
previous years and by the way I do also
  • 00:13:09
want to mention alongside the iPhone se4
  • 00:13:11
or iPhone 16e we should also be seeing a
  • 00:13:14
new Macbook how would expect them both
  • 00:13:16
to be released around the same time we
  • 00:13:18
don't know for sure but a new M4 MacBook
  • 00:13:20
Air is also expected in the spring so
  • 00:13:23
within the next couple of months we
  • 00:13:24
should also be seeing an M4 MacBook Air
  • 00:13:27
we're not hearing about any major read
  • 00:13:29
designs but it should start at 16 gigs
  • 00:13:31
of RAM also this week we heard some
  • 00:13:33
pretty interesting news that Tim Cook
  • 00:13:35
plans to donate $1 million to Donald
  • 00:13:38
Trump's inauguration fund and this looks
  • 00:13:40
like it's going to be a personal
  • 00:13:42
donation directly from Tim Cook rather
  • 00:13:44
than a donation from Apple as a company
  • 00:13:47
which is quite interesting and axio says
  • 00:13:50
that Tim Cook is donating to the
  • 00:13:51
inauguration in the spirit of unity and
  • 00:13:54
that Apple itself as a company is not
  • 00:13:57
expected to make a donation and this
  • 00:13:59
right here might be the reason that the
  • 00:14:01
iPhone 17s can remain at the same price
  • 00:14:04
as the iPhone 16s but who knows I don't
  • 00:14:07
want to get too political here on
  • 00:14:08
YouTube but I just found this pretty
  • 00:14:10
interesting and then finally we have
  • 00:14:11
another crazy air tag story so this time
  • 00:14:14
a 20-year-old food delivery driver was
  • 00:14:17
taking the red line train in Chicago one
  • 00:14:20
morning just before Christmas when two
  • 00:14:22
men started attacking him randomly one
  • 00:14:25
of them put him in a choke hold and the
  • 00:14:27
other threatened him with a knife they
  • 00:14:29
then punched him several times in the
  • 00:14:31
face and body and stole his electric
  • 00:14:33
bike and his headphones but what the two
  • 00:14:35
suspects didn't know was that the bike
  • 00:14:37
had an air tag attached to it so of
  • 00:14:40
course the 20-year-old called police and
  • 00:14:42
they were able to use its location data
  • 00:14:44
along with CTA surveillance footage to
  • 00:14:47
track them down within 35 minutes I did
  • 00:14:51
not expect that especially in a city
  • 00:14:53
like Chicago but anyways you know the
  • 00:14:55
two suspects who were aged 44 and 19
  • 00:14:59
were arrested and charged with one
  • 00:15:01
felony count of aggravated battery and
  • 00:15:03
aggravated robbery but without the air
  • 00:15:05
tag and the find my application those
  • 00:15:08
police would probably not have found
  • 00:15:10
those people within a day let alone 35
  • 00:15:12
minutes it may have even taken weeks so
  • 00:15:14
got to love that for the air tag and I
  • 00:15:16
    hope that 20-year-old recovers anyways
  • 00:15:18
that's it for this week hope you guys
  • 00:15:19
enjoyed it if you did be sure to give it
  • 00:15:21
a thumbs up also make sure to subscribe
  • 00:15:22
I do have a lot of interesting videos
  • 00:15:24
coming for the year 2025 so I can't wait
  • 00:15:27
to share those with you over the next
  • 00:15:29
several months but anyways guys thanks
  • 00:15:31
again for watching and I'll see you soon
