00:00:00
hey everybody welcome back to a new
00:00:01
video right here I have the ankor solx
00:00:04
f3800 and this has been a very popular
00:00:07
Power Station this year and for good
00:00:08
reason it's always priced well against
00:00:11
the competition it has a large inverter
00:00:13
it puts out split face power good for up
00:00:15
to 6,000 WTS and it has a large lithium
00:00:18
iron phosphate battery at almost 4,000
00:00:21
WS of capacity however in my original
00:00:24
review I found one big Quirk about this
00:00:27
whenever you AC charge this power
00:00:28
station it shuts off the 240 volt output
00:00:32
the split phase output cannot be used
00:00:34
now I thought it'd be helpful to
00:00:35
demonstrate what the actual problem is
00:00:38
and why it's important to solve so right
00:00:40
here I have the f3800 with the split
00:00:43
phase output the 240 volts feeding my
00:00:46
transfer switch now a lot of people also
00:00:48
do this with a generator Inlet to back
00:00:51
feed to their main panel with an
00:00:52
interlock switch so these are the two
00:00:54
most common ways to power your home
00:00:56
during a power outage well the 240 volt
00:01:00
output needs to be enabled in order to
00:01:02
do that well let's say there's a big
00:01:04
storm going on uh I don't have any solar
00:01:07
available or maybe it's at night and I
00:01:10
can't charge with solar input you need
00:01:12
to charge with AC input so let's say I
00:01:14
have a gas generator and I want to
00:01:16
charge this so I have the gas generator
00:01:18
feed right here let's plug it in I'll
00:01:20
show you what happens shuts off the 240
00:01:24
well this right here solves that problem
00:01:27
so what is this thing well this is the
00:01:28
eg4 charge large verter this is a
00:01:30
massive AC todc power supply meaning
00:01:34
that you connect 120 volts ac or 240
00:01:38
volts ac input here and then on the
00:01:40
other side it puts out DC power for
00:01:42
example on this side you have your main
00:01:44
positive and negative DC output so you
00:01:46
can connect into the solar charging
00:01:48
ports so by using the eg4 charge verter
00:01:51
we can basically trick the power station
00:01:53
to think it's charging from DC input
00:01:55
this will allow us to keep the 240 volt
00:01:57
split phase output enabled while you're
00:02:00
charging from AC power now guys this is
00:02:02
not a sponsored video because I didn't
00:02:04
even know if this was going to work when
00:02:06
I originally purchased the eg4 charge
00:02:09
verter but guess what it does work now
00:02:12
this comes with the cabling required to
00:02:14
have a 240 volt input and to connect
00:02:17
directly up to a 48 volt battery so
00:02:19
there will be a few modifications to
00:02:22
this wiring to get it to charge off 120
00:02:25
volts and to connect up to the Anchor
00:02:26
f3800 but I'll walk you through that
00:02:28
here in a couple minutes
00:02:30
but first let's hook it up and show you
00:02:32
how it works so for my first test what I
00:02:34
have is the eg4 connected to a 120 Vol
00:02:38
AC source and I have the anchor f3800
00:02:42
running about uh 780 W load through the
00:02:45
inverter so I have the charging cable
00:02:48
for the DC solar input I'm going to
00:02:51
connect the charge verter up to it right
00:02:53
now so now that it's connected you just
00:02:56
give it a couple seconds and you'll
00:02:57
start seeing a charging input right here
00:02:59
on the screen so now we can see that
00:03:01
it's charging at 1150 W input from the
00:03:04
charge verter and we are outputting
00:03:06
about 778 watts and it is estimating a
00:03:10
recharge in 1.1 hours now on the screen
00:03:13
of the eg4 you also get a voltage output
00:03:15
reading the current reading and the S so
00:03:18
now you'll notice that the S so says
00:03:20
lost because this does not communicate
00:03:22
with the anchor f300 now that's fine it
00:03:24
doesn't need to communicate for the
00:03:26
voltage output we're seeing
00:03:28
51.9 to 52 Vols and the current is 22
00:03:32
amps now if you remember there are two
00:03:35
charging ports on the f3800 now
00:03:37
unfortunately they don't support a
00:03:39
parallel connection between a single
00:03:42
charging source for example if I connect
00:03:44
this in it is going to shut off the
00:03:47
charging completely because both of them
00:03:50
come from the same charging source for
00:03:52
example with both connected we are now
00:03:54
charging at 0 Watts so it stops charging
00:03:57
completely when there is a common ground
00:03:59
between both charging ports now if I
00:04:01
unplug one of those it should start
00:04:04
charging here in a couple seconds now I
00:04:07
am in Communications with ankor support
00:04:09
team and I'm curious if they can make a
00:04:12
setting change here they've upgraded the
00:04:14
firmware on this to have a couple
00:04:16
improvements and if they're able to make
00:04:19
this support parallel charging it would
00:04:21
be really cool you'd be able to charge
00:04:23
this at the full 2 2400 W from the
00:04:25
charge verter if we had both of these
00:04:27
ports connected up now I did have to to
00:04:29
change a few of the settings on the
00:04:31
charge verter in order to get the full
00:04:33
charging speed on the f3800 so take a
00:04:35
look at these settings you'll want to
00:04:37
mimic these if you want to charge at the
00:04:39
full speed now guys I apologize for the
00:04:41
fan noise this has really loud fans
00:04:43
because it's such a heavyduty charger
00:04:45
this is able to Output 100 amps slightly
00:04:48
over 5,000 watts of power to charge up a
00:04:51
48volt battery bank and luckily it's
00:04:54
also compatible with the anchor
00:04:56
f3800 now I have a few viewers that
00:04:58
probably have two of these and they're
00:05:00
probably wondering well can I connect
00:05:02
the eg4 charge verter up to two separate
00:05:05
anchor f3800 to dual charge them now I
00:05:08
believe that would be possible if you
00:05:09
had two pigtails because the anchor F
00:05:12
3800s charge independently from each
00:05:14
other so if you connected one pigtail up
00:05:16
to each one you should be able to charge
00:05:18
at around 1150 Watts on each unit or
00:05:21
around 2400 Watts total now I don't have
00:05:25
a way to test that because I only have
00:05:26
one of these units but if someone else
00:05:28
has two units and they pick up a charge
00:05:30
verter and test that out let me know if
00:05:32
you can charge two separate units at the
00:05:34
same time using one charge verter so the
00:05:37
big question is do I have to purchase
00:05:39
the eg4 charge verter to accomplish the
00:05:42
same thing and let me explain why this
00:05:44
is a better option than others out there
00:05:48
first off is the actual cost in order to
00:05:51
put out a continuous 12200 watts into
00:05:54
this power station you are going to need
00:05:56
a very large AC todc converter they can
00:05:59
handle that power continuously for
00:06:01
example right here I have a 1200 W BK
00:06:04
precision uh AC todc power supply this
00:06:08
costs over
00:06:09
$3,000 new and that is basically more
00:06:13
money than the actual uh Power Station
00:06:16
itself if you want to have high amperage
00:06:19
and high voltage continuously you will
00:06:21
have to purchase a very large AC to DC
00:06:24
power supply and they stack up quick if
00:06:27
you get a cheaper model it won't able to
00:06:29
handle the continuous output and will
00:06:31
probably burn up within a few hours and
00:06:34
then you're going to be out your money
00:06:35
so you're going to have to purchase
00:06:36
something that's large and can handle
00:06:38
the output the charge verter for example
00:06:40
is rated at 5,000 watts and US charging
00:06:44
one unit at 1200 WS is not anywhere near
00:06:47
the maximum output and this is able to
00:06:50
keep itself cool even if you're charging
00:06:52
two units at 2400 Watts you're still
00:06:54
only running this at 50% of its rated
00:06:57
power output so it should be just fine
00:07:00
the other thing to consider is most of
00:07:03
the time you're going to be charging
00:07:04
from AC input is if you have a power
00:07:06
outage and you're charging from a gas
00:07:08
generator a AC to DC converter like this
00:07:11
will not be able to run off the dirty
00:07:13
power from a gas generator but the
00:07:16
charge verter is designed to run off any
00:07:18
sort of gas generator an inverter
00:07:20
generator or a traditional sinewave
00:07:22
generator this is designed to take any
00:07:24
of that dirty power and convert it to DC
00:07:26
power that's kind of why this thing was
00:07:29
created so this is not nearly the cost
00:07:32
of something like this yet it has more
00:07:34
functionality so let's go ahead and test
00:07:36
that out I want to take this outside
00:07:38
power it up with my gas generator and
00:07:40
see if we can actually charge the f3800
00:07:43
okay guys so here is the testing setup
00:07:45
for running the charge verter off a gas
00:07:47
generator to charge up the
00:07:50
f3800 so right here I have the generator
00:07:53
this is actually a dual fuel generator
00:07:54
from Pulsar it's their GX 400 BN this is
00:07:58
a 4,000 Peak dual fuel generator and
00:08:02
I'll be running it off propane today the
00:08:04
benefit of having this generator here is
00:08:06
that it does have an RV 30 amp output
00:08:09
and that's how I'll be connecting up the
00:08:10
charge verter now for the charge verter
00:08:12
setup I will go over this wiring a
00:08:15
little bit later in the video to show
00:08:16
you how I did this but basically I have
00:08:19
the 240 volt cable that comes with the
00:08:21
charge verter and I've adapted it to the
00:08:25
30 amp output so I'll show you how that
00:08:27
works to run it off 120 volts
00:08:30
I have the DC output going out and
00:08:32
around the back of the power station
00:08:36
where I have two XT 60s and of course
00:08:38
we'll only be connecting one into the
00:08:40
solar charging port to charge it at
00:08:42
around 1150 W so first I'm going to
00:08:45
start up the generator get it warm and
00:08:47
then we'll plug in the charge verter
00:09:10
[Music]
00:09:16
okay guys it's going to be really hard
00:09:17
to see the screen but we are sitting at
00:09:19
95% state of charge and 1150 Watts I'll
00:09:22
throw a screenshot up from the app so
00:09:24
you guys can see what's happening but we
00:09:26
have this connected in and it is
00:09:27
charging from the gas gener
00:09:30
okay so everything appears to be working
00:09:32
properly when running the charge verter
00:09:34
off the propane generator so I'm going
00:09:37
to let this finish up charging it's
00:09:39
probably got about 10 to 15 minutes just
00:09:40
want to make sure everything works
00:09:42
without any issues and the only thing
00:09:44
you'd have to do is adjust the cable
00:09:46
length depending on where you have your
00:09:48
generator and where you have your power
00:09:50
station but once this is finished I'll
00:09:52
take you inside to show you guys the
00:09:53
wiring setup it is fairly simple you
00:09:56
just buy a few things off Amazon and you
00:09:58
can connect everything together now in
00:10:00
the next section of the video I want to
00:10:01
talk about powering up the eg4 charge
00:10:03
verter if you remember it accepts two
00:10:05
different voltages 2040 volt and 120
00:10:09
volt now out of the box you get this
00:10:12
power cable this is meant for 240 volt
00:10:15
input so if you have a 240 volt
00:10:18
generator you don't have to worry about
00:10:20
any modifications this is an
00:10:23
l1430 plug and you should be familiar
00:10:27
with this if you have a 240 volt source
00:10:29
if not that's fine this will still work
00:10:32
off 120 volts I'll walk through this
00:10:34
adapter here that I've built and I'll
00:10:36
link these products down in the video
00:10:38
description now if you want to power
00:10:39
this off 120 volts you'll connect up the
00:10:42
240 volt charging cable and you'll
00:10:45
notice that this has four conductors so
00:10:48
you have your ground you have two Hots
00:10:50
which each provide 120 volts and then
00:10:53
you have this one up here which is your
00:10:55
neutral now they do provide the wiring
00:10:58
diagram in the user manual and that's
00:11:00
how I set this up so right here we have
00:11:03
an
00:11:04
l1430 receptacle with three conductors
00:11:07
you have your neutral you have your hot
00:11:10
or your live and then you have your
00:11:12
ground and this connects right up to
00:11:14
this adapter here now what this is is
00:11:18
this is a dog bone style adapter I
00:11:20
purchased this for an RV Connection
00:11:23
basically I chopped off the end stripped
00:11:25
back the insulation and then attached on
00:11:27
this receptacle so I could be able to
00:11:30
attach it properly to this I could not
00:11:33
find any type of adapter that was wired
00:11:35
in this sort of way online so you have
00:11:38
to make your own cable now I'll quickly
00:11:40
take this apart so you guys can see how
00:11:42
it's put together um these just come
00:11:44
apart pretty easily with a couple screws
00:11:47
and then you can rewire them up so uh
00:11:50
fairly easy if you've ever wired an
00:11:52
outlet uh you can definitely do
00:11:54
something like this now once you remove
00:11:56
those two screws this and this just kind
00:11:58
of SL slide down on top of this cable
00:12:01
and then it reveals the three conductors
00:12:03
so right here you can see the white one
00:12:05
is your neutral the black is your hot
00:12:08
and the green is your ground basically
00:12:11
you just strip back the wire put it up
00:12:13
into this slot and then screw down this
00:12:15
screw extremely tight and you have wired
00:12:18
up your DIY 120 volt power cable for the
00:12:22
charge verter so with those changes now
00:12:24
we can power it off 120 volts or 240
00:12:27
volts so let's focus on the out output
00:12:29
wiring right here we have the stock
00:12:31
cabling this is your positive wire this
00:12:34
red one and the black one is your
00:12:36
negative wire and this is meant to
00:12:37
charge a battery if you look right here
00:12:39
we have ring terminals which these
00:12:41
aren't compatible with f3800 so we have
00:12:43
to make a change but I still want to
00:12:45
make this compatible with a battery just
00:12:47
in case I want to charge a battery down
00:12:48
the road so what I want to do is put an
00:12:50
inline adapter I'm going to use these
00:12:53
sb50 connections with the six gauge
00:12:56
terminals we are going to cut off about
00:12:58
a foot of this wire and we are going to
00:13:00
put a brake in it using S SP 50s so we
00:13:02
can change the end off so it's
00:13:04
compatible with a battery or the f3800
00:13:07
okay guys there's no going back I have
00:13:09
cut the wire so now this is what the
00:13:11
setup looks like we are going to put an
00:13:13
S sp50 right here and another s sp50
00:13:16
right here so we can basically attach
00:13:18
this one when we want to connect to a
00:13:20
battery and then we'll have another
00:13:21
adapter that we can make it so it's
00:13:23
compatible with the f3800 this is really
00:13:25
easy to put these on basically you just
00:13:28
cut back the insulation put on the
00:13:30
terminal and then you crimp it down with
00:13:32
these crimpers and you're good to go so
00:13:34
jumping forward a few minutes I have one
00:13:36
side completed they're all snapped in
00:13:38
there everything's good to go there and
00:13:40
I have these two ready to go now these
00:13:42
have already been crimped so you can see
00:13:45
the crimp marks on
00:13:46
there now when you feed these in you do
00:13:49
have to do it a particular way so you
00:13:51
can see it's labeled positive and
00:13:53
negative and there is a spring clip in
00:13:56
here you can see that Spring right there
00:13:58
and this bent part of the pin goes over
00:14:01
this spring so let me get this lined up
00:14:04
so we have the positive and the spring
00:14:07
clip and it basically is just going to
00:14:09
go on you kind of feed it in snap it
00:14:11
into place you can see it snaps over
00:14:13
that
00:14:14
spring do the same thing with the
00:14:16
negative line it
00:14:18
up push it
00:14:20
in sometimes it takes a little
00:14:23
bit and they are both snapped in and
00:14:26
then these can now
00:14:29
connect together and they are a very
00:14:31
secure connection well now that I have
00:14:33
this completed I'd make one
00:14:35
recommendation you can see that these
00:14:37
are pretty short if you wanted to
00:14:39
connect up to a server rack battery this
00:14:42
is probably not going to reach between
00:14:44
the two terminals so I would definitely
00:14:46
recommend making these longer in your
00:14:49
setup um I already have a long set of
00:14:51
these so I wanted a short one so that's
00:14:53
why I made these shorter but definitely
00:14:55
make these longer if you're looking to
00:14:56
connect up to a 48volt battery in the
00:14:59
future with the charge verter now what
00:15:02
is this right here well this is how
00:15:04
we're going to connect up to the
00:15:07
f3800 so this is the same sv50
00:15:10
connection except for inside this I'm
00:15:12
using 8 gauge terminals they have
00:15:16
different size terminals available and I
00:15:18
wanted to use eight gauge because right
00:15:19
here I actually have two 10 gauge wire
00:15:22
sets going into each one so they feed in
00:15:25
there perfectly I basically just strip
00:15:27
back the insulation crimp those on on
00:15:29
and then snapped it in now what these
00:15:31
are is these are xt90 anti-spark
00:15:34
connections these allow you to connect
00:15:35
up to a high volage um high power setup
00:15:39
without getting a spark because these
00:15:40
have a built-in resistor now the final
00:15:42
adapter that you'll need to connect up
00:15:44
to the f3800 is this one right here now
00:15:47
this is a 10 gauge wire it's
00:15:50
xt90 male to xt60 female now don't worry
00:15:56
I'll have all the product links down in
00:15:58
the video description so there's no
00:15:59
confusion so you can just purchase these
00:16:01
but basically what you'll want to do is
00:16:03
you connect this to your Power Station
00:16:05
DC charging port first and then you
00:16:08
would connect this up right here and
00:16:09
because there's an xt90 anti-spark you
00:16:12
will not get a spark now if you happen
00:16:14
to have a second f3800 you can use this
00:16:17
second pigtail to charge that one up you
00:16:19
do the same thing connect it up to the
00:16:21
second f3800 charging port and then
00:16:24
connect this up right here and then it
00:16:27
will start charging both devices now in
00:16:29
the future if they happen to enable
00:16:31
parallel charging where you can connect
00:16:33
these up to the same Power Station you
00:16:35
have the ability to connect both up for
00:16:38
faster charging remember all these will
00:16:40
be down in the video description now
00:16:42
guys before ending the video I quickly
00:16:44
want to talk about a new firmware update
00:16:46
that upgraded the solar charge
00:16:47
controllers on the f3800 so you can get
00:16:49
much more power now up on the screen
00:16:51
you're going to see both the Old and the
00:16:53
new solar parameters just make sure
00:16:55
you've upgraded the firmware on the unit
00:16:57
to version 2.11 or newer so you can get
00:17:00
the new changes the biggest change is
00:17:02
the voltage input for example now you
00:17:05
can get Peak amperage anywhere between
00:17:07
15 and 60 volts and they've upped the
00:17:10
amperage a little bit to 27 amps this
00:17:12
will allow you to use basically any 300
00:17:15
W class or 400 wat class solar panel
00:17:18
together in parallel to get the 1200 WTS
00:17:21
now if you still need a little bit of
00:17:22
extra guidance on how to connect those
00:17:24
solar panels together in parallel or
00:17:26
what other components may be needed to
00:17:27
keep everything safe feel free to reach
00:17:29
out to me via my ask me Consulting
00:17:31
service I'd be happy to help now
00:17:33
hopefully you guys have found the
00:17:34
information in this video helpful
00:17:37
especially if you're wanting to work
00:17:38
around the 240 volt shut off on the
00:17:41
f3800 now another way to get around this
00:17:44
is by just using 48 volt batteries and
00:17:47
charging the unit and then you can use
00:17:49
any sort of charger on your 48volt
00:17:52
battery but that does take additional
00:17:55
cost to purchase a 48v battery I have a
00:17:57
full video on that that I'll include
00:17:59
down in the video description that kind
00:18:01
of goes through some of the quirks and
00:18:03
how to get around them but in this video
00:18:05
you can see that the eg4 charge verter
00:18:07
is a somewhat affordable way to overcome
00:18:11
the AC charging issue you guys will have
00:18:13
to let me know if you have any other
00:18:15
questions about this throw a comment
00:18:16
down below and if you want some extra
00:18:18
guidance about this I will have the link
00:18:20
to my ask me Consulting service down in
00:18:23
the video description as well where you
00:18:24
can get in direct contact with me and I
00:18:26
can walk you through any wiring setups
00:18:28
or any other complications that you may
00:18:30
have because I'd love to help you get
00:18:32
this working because some people ended
00:18:34
up purchasing these units without even
00:18:36
knowing the 240 volt shuts off and so
00:18:39
now they're in a bind say you know
00:18:41
basically how do I get this to work well
00:18:43
this is one way to do that make sure you
00:18:45
check out the video description I'll
00:18:47
have all the links down there guys thank
00:18:49
you so much for watching if you like
