wasallam
00:03:08
we begin in the name of Allah the most
00:03:10
gracious the most merciful all praise is
00:03:12
due to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala who has
00:03:14
created us sustains us has blessed us
00:03:18
with Islam and has given us the ability
00:03:20
to gathered here in his remembrance all
00:03:23
Praises due to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
00:03:25
who has made us from amongst the um of
00:03:26
his beloved Prophet Muhammad sallallah
00:03:28
alaihi wasallam may Allah subhanahu
00:03:31
wa'ta'ala send salutations upon the
00:03:33
prophet sallallah alaihi wasallam his
00:03:35
companions his family and all the
00:03:37
prophets before him may Allah subhanahu
00:03:39
wa ta'ala protect those of us who Choose
00:03:40
To Tread in their
00:03:43
path Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has
00:03:46
created each of us
00:03:49
with a purpose that he himself has
00:03:53
mandated for us for his
00:03:56
creation and when that purpose is absent
00:03:59
from from someone's life that hole that
00:04:04
void is usually filled with many other
00:04:08
things people try to have a Pursuit have
00:04:13
an ultimate objective have goals in
00:04:17
their life that tries to substitute the
00:04:20
purpose that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
00:04:22
has given us and from among the many
00:04:25
many things that a person can try to do
00:04:28
to fill that Gap
00:04:30
that void that they feel because they
00:04:32
don't feel like they're working towards
00:04:34
something greater than themselves one of
00:04:38
the
00:04:38
greatest substitutes and one of the
00:04:41
biggest trappings that we fall into is
00:04:44
the idea of things bringing us
00:04:48
happiness consuming for the sake of
00:04:51
consuming it's one of the marvels of our
00:04:55
time that everything that we see around
00:04:58
us is geared towards
00:05:01
highlighting maximizing how much a
00:05:03
person is willing to spend how much a
00:05:06
person is willing to
00:05:08
buy and the idea of happiness is tied
00:05:12
into the idea of buying in order to
00:05:15
achieve happiness that if you have more
00:05:18
you will feel happy if you have less
00:05:21
then you will feel the lack of it and
00:05:23
that lack of it will make you
00:05:25
sad the prophet sallallah alai wasallam
00:05:28
and the Hadith Allah subhanahu wa in the
00:05:30
Quran warns us of the trappings of a
00:05:35
consumerist mindset this is not of
00:05:37
course talking about the positive
00:05:40
positive aspects of wealth it's not
00:05:42
talking about the positive aspects that
00:05:45
a person can gain by spending in the
00:05:47
path of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala by
00:05:49
giving charity by helping the people
00:05:51
around them through zaka by spending on
00:05:53
one's family by utilizing their wealth
00:05:56
for the greater good for a larger
00:06:00
objective for the Improvement of society
00:06:03
around them we're not talking about that
00:06:04
we're talking about the negative aspects
00:06:07
of wealth Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
00:06:09
reminds us in the Quran that the life of
00:06:12
this world begins with play that the
00:06:17
life of this world begins with play that
00:06:19
when we are children the only thing that
00:06:21
we are concerned with is
00:06:24
play and the play
00:06:27
itself as a concept remain s throughout
00:06:30
our life but it takes on different forms
00:06:33
there's a famous saying that the
00:06:35
difference between men and boys is the
00:06:36
price of their toys but the idea is that
00:06:39
you just need more expensive things to
00:06:42
occupy your time so a child is occupied
00:06:46
with play when you are growing up and
00:06:49
you are a teenager you are a young adult
00:06:52
and often times the pursuit of desires
00:06:54
of physical desires of fulfillment of
00:06:57
what you want to
00:06:58
do and then when a person grows older we
00:07:02
get attracted to the idea of beauty
00:07:05
wasena and we want this beauty to be
00:07:08
presented outwardly and we want it to be
00:07:11
surrounded by Beauty and often times it
00:07:14
is the physical aspects of beauty
00:07:16
whether it's in a person whether it's on
00:07:19
things that attract our attention and
00:07:21
this is of course maximized by marketing
00:07:24
agencies there's a reason why women are
00:07:28
used so effectively in marketing
00:07:31
campaigns because they know what
00:07:33
attracts the
00:07:34
eyes but beyond that when a
00:07:38
person marries and they have a family
00:07:42
what do we usually do when it comes to
00:07:46
comparing where we are in life Allah
00:07:49
subhanahu waala
00:07:54
says at a certain
00:07:56
point the height of
00:08:00
the worldly life is when a person is
00:08:02
competing with each other in just having
00:08:06
more
00:08:08
what you want to compete to see who has
00:08:12
more and you want to use the things
00:08:16
around you to give yourself a sense of
00:08:19
pride and joy and we're talking about
00:08:22
unhealthy pride and joy there's nothing
00:08:24
wrong with being happy with the
00:08:26
blessings Allah has given you there's
00:08:28
nothing wrong with being happy with your
00:08:30
house your car your children the
00:08:32
achievements of your children but when
00:08:34
you use that to boast amongst
00:08:37
yourselves it's taking the place of your
00:08:40
ultimate objective of life you're using
00:08:43
that as the end goal that as long as all
00:08:46
of these things are done I'm happy but
00:08:48
Allah says your worldly life has to mean
00:08:52
more than that there has to be more that
00:08:54
you aim for because Allah has given you
00:08:57
and I the capacity to do more our
00:09:01
aspirations have to be much greater they
00:09:03
have to be more permanent they have to
00:09:07
they have to include the Hereafter and
00:09:10
not just be confined to this worldly
00:09:13
life and this idea of competing with
00:09:16
each other for wealth for resources
00:09:19
boasting amongst ourselves with what we
00:09:22
have this continues until a person
00:09:25
passes away Allah subhanahu wa tala says
00:09:30
that this constant
00:09:32
competition this constant competition
00:09:35
this measuring yourself against each
00:09:38
other with the things that you own it's
00:09:41
based on the things that you
00:09:43
own it diverts you it diverts you from
00:09:47
Allah it diverts you from your ultimate
00:09:50
objective of life and this
00:09:53
continues until you are in the
00:09:56
graves but Allah says
00:10:00
never you will soon know the reality of
00:10:03
the life of this world that if you
00:10:06
if if love of wealth and love of life
00:10:10
has successfully diverted your attention
00:10:13
away from Allah if Shan was successful
00:10:15
and you allowed Shan to be successful to
00:10:18
divert you away from Allah you will soon
00:10:21
know the
00:10:22
reality what you should have done and
00:10:25
what Now lies ahead of
00:10:28
you Allah repeats that statement that
00:10:31
you will absolutely know without a
00:10:32
shadow of doubt that you have wasted
00:10:34
your entire life by pursuing the things
00:10:37
that ultimately did not benefit you if
00:10:39
you did not use them in the right
00:10:42
way when we think about consumerism
00:10:46
generally speaking we think about buying
00:10:49
things and this could be categorized in
00:10:52
many different ways we buy things
00:10:54
because we need them so our needs are at
00:10:58
the top and this is with regards to just
00:11:01
surviving and living you need a house
00:11:05
you need cars you need clothes all of
00:11:07
those things are needs that's
00:11:10
fine under needs we have wants often
00:11:14
times when it comes to trying to figure
00:11:15
out if you really really really should
00:11:18
get something is to try to First figure
00:11:21
out the question whether I want it or
00:11:24
needed if you want something it's not
00:11:27
necessarily A Bad Thing however that
00:11:30
want in and of itself has to be
00:11:32
controlled you don't want your wants to
00:11:36
dictate what you should do you should
00:11:39
control it in order to prioritize your
00:11:41
needs and in order to prioritize your
00:11:44
greater objectives but beyond the needs
00:11:47
and wants there's a third category and
00:11:50
this is something that came up over the
00:11:53
last 100 years has been coined as
00:11:56
conspicuous consumerism
00:12:00
conspicuous consumerism which simply
00:12:02
means you buy things not because you
00:12:06
need it not because you want it but
00:12:10
because a particular item has a status
00:12:15
symbol it signifies to the person who
00:12:18
sees it that they should put you in a
00:12:21
particular category and if you think
00:12:23
about brand marketing that's all what it
00:12:26
is about because if a car
00:12:29
is about taking you from point A to
00:12:31
point B then it's no different than a
00:12:35
$330,000 car or a $3 million car if the
00:12:38
ultimate objective is to move you from
00:12:39
one point to another what's the
00:12:41
difference between each one it's
00:12:43
conspicuous consumerism having a certain
00:12:46
brand of car tells people who you are
00:12:51
without saying much there's a reason why
00:12:55
logos are visible because each one tells
00:13:00
the person across from you that this is
00:13:03
where I am at and this is what takur is
00:13:06
about if you think about social media if
00:13:09
you think about how you know products
00:13:11
are usually marketed it's usually
00:13:14
marketed with the idea of buy it and
00:13:17
you'll be better buy it you'll be at a
00:13:19
higher level buy it you'll be happier
00:13:22
buy it people will respect you
00:13:24
everything is tied into the idea of
00:13:26
buying something that's just better than
00:13:29
than the thing that you have if you just
00:13:31
think about how our markets work we're
00:13:34
all conditioned to just look for an
00:13:37
update it's the next best thing even if
00:13:40
the next best thing is no different than
00:13:41
the one you bought last year it's only
00:13:43
one grade better maybe it has one extra
00:13:46
feature but our conditioning is to such
00:13:50
a degree that not having it makes us
00:13:54
feel that we are missing out on
00:13:56
something or that what I already have
00:13:59
even if it's fully functional and looks
00:14:01
perfectly new we feel like this is
00:14:05
already old it's already
00:14:07
obsolete why is that the case because
00:14:10
the psychology
00:14:12
behind and is you need to always buy
00:14:19
continuously buy there a reason why
00:14:21
things break down so easily because
00:14:24
you'll just buy the next
00:14:26
one the prophet sallallahu alaihi
00:14:28
wasallam tells us in a Hadith narrated
00:14:30
inkari by
00:14:32
anik that the son of
00:14:35
Adam is a glutton in other words never
00:14:40
satisfied if they had a valley of gold
00:14:44
they would want a second Valley and this
00:14:47
applies in so many ways once you have a
00:14:50
house you think about having a second
00:14:52
house you think about having one house
00:14:54
that pays off your other house you have
00:14:57
a weekend car you have a weekday car
00:14:59
right you have formal clothing informal
00:15:01
clothing you have all of these things
00:15:04
because once you have one then you think
00:15:07
about having something else something
00:15:09
else and something else and the prophet
00:15:11
sallallah alai wasallam says
00:15:15
ultimately that the only thing that can
00:15:18
fill the mouth of the son of Adam is
00:15:21
dirt in other words until you're dead
00:15:23
and in the ground and you're filled with
00:15:26
dirt and your body is disintegrated
00:15:28
that's only when you're going to be
00:15:29
happy because now you're
00:15:32
fulfilled and it shows the trappings of
00:15:36
tying your happiness to just buying
00:15:39
things because ultimately the more you
00:15:41
try to buy to achieve happiness to
00:15:43
achieve some purpose in life it will
00:15:47
never satisfy you because there's
00:15:49
never an end to wanding things as soon
00:15:54
as you hit a certain point you think
00:15:56
about moving on to the next point and
00:15:58
it's about every single thing that we
00:16:01
have and this is something that all of
00:16:03
us can admit we all suffer from it but
00:16:06
how does a person move beyond that how
00:16:09
does a person recognize the trappings of
00:16:12
this mindset that our life has to be
00:16:17
more than just about existing eating and
00:16:19
drinking and spending money and spending
00:16:22
money on things that we don't need
00:16:24
perhaps that we're not going to use that
00:16:26
often but we buy it because it's so easy
00:16:29
to buy there's a reason why you know you
00:16:33
know aside from the idea of convenience
00:16:35
there's a reason why saving your card
00:16:37
information is so easy on an Amazon app
00:16:41
why you have things like oneclick buy
00:16:44
because before you can think about it
00:16:46
too much if you just press the button
00:16:48
you've already ordered
00:16:50
it try to do an experiment on yourself
00:16:54
of using cold hard cash to purchase
00:16:57
items versus swiping your card you think
00:17:02
twice when you're actually giving
00:17:04
physical cash
00:17:05
over versus just swiping your card
00:17:08
because you don't think about how much
00:17:09
you end up
00:17:10
buying the prophet sallallah alaihi
00:17:13
wasallam reminds us that I don't fear
00:17:17
for you I.E the umah I don't fear for
00:17:20
you in terms of
00:17:23
poverty but I fear the wealth of the
00:17:26
world being opened up the treasures of
00:17:29
the World opening up for
00:17:31
you because it opened up for the people
00:17:36
before and they were
00:17:38
destroyed and when it opens up for you
00:17:40
and you indulge in the wealth of this
00:17:43
world it will destroy you as well
00:17:45
because it will divert you from your
00:17:46
true true
00:17:48
purpose the prophet sallallahu alaihi
00:17:50
wasallam says in a Hadith ofi that two
00:17:53
hungry
00:17:54
wolves if you were to imagine two hungry
00:17:57
predators being Unleashed upon a flock
00:18:00
of sheep how much Carnage and havoc and
00:18:03
destruction they can cause that's how
00:18:06
much destruction the love of wealth and
00:18:09
fame can cause to a person's religion
00:18:13
because it diverts you from your
00:18:14
ultimate
00:18:17
objective so
00:18:20
realizing recognizing the trappings of
00:18:23
wealth the mindset that the world around
00:18:28
us can and suck us into is one step
00:18:32
recognizing that this is ultimately for
00:18:35
just utility I use it to live I use it
00:18:39
for the pleasure of Allah subhanahu wa
00:18:41
ta'ala I use it to attain
00:18:44
my but beyond that in and of itself it's
00:18:47
not going to bring me Comfort success
00:18:49
and joy it might buy me things that
00:18:52
bring me a moment of happiness and joy
00:18:54
But ultimately it is not something that
00:18:57
will give me
00:18:59
permanent Joy it's
00:19:03
fleeting so what should a person do they
00:19:06
should remind themselves of the purpose
00:19:08
Allah subhanahu waala has given
00:19:13
them says that the first level the first
00:19:17
tier of existence is simply existence
00:19:20
which is you live you eat you drink you
00:19:24
try to find
00:19:25
shelter right you build societies you
00:19:28
build Comm communities it's just a way
00:19:31
of living your
00:19:33
life but you are bani Adam we are human
00:19:37
beings there has to be something greater
00:19:39
than this Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
00:19:41
reminds us inah
00:19:46
is that we have dignified the children
00:19:50
of Adam how are we dignified we are
00:19:53
dignified by
00:19:55
intelligence the fact that we are able
00:19:57
to think
00:19:59
Beyond self-awareness the fact that we
00:20:01
have more than just base instincts for
00:20:04
survival the fact that we are able to
00:20:06
think Beyond ourselves the fact that we
00:20:09
could communicate the way we do even
00:20:11
though other animals and other species
00:20:13
communicate in different ways we are
00:20:16
able to communicate at a higher
00:20:20
level our bodies have been created in
00:20:24
proportion we look pleasing Pleasant
00:20:27
beautiful Allah subhana
00:20:29
has created
00:20:30
us in the best of
00:20:34
moles this dignity is visible during our
00:20:37
lives when we cover ourselves we don't
00:20:40
expose ourselves because we are
00:20:41
dignified Allah has given us innate
00:20:43
dignity and we honor that dignity by
00:20:46
dressing the way Allah subhanahu wa
00:20:48
ta'ala has deemed for us this continues
00:20:51
even after a person passes away and the
00:20:53
fact that they are washed and shrouded
00:20:56
and buried with dignity that we don't
00:20:57
leave them to we don't cremate
00:21:00
them we don't do what we want with our
00:21:03
bodies
00:21:04
because Allah has dignified us but this
00:21:07
dignity is not just the physical dignity
00:21:10
that Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala has given
00:21:11
us Allah has dignified us with
00:21:14
purpose and this is mentioned at the end
00:21:17
of the Ayah Allah says that we have
00:21:18
dignified bani Adam and we have given
00:21:20
them the capacity to travel on land we
00:21:23
have given them the capacity to travel
00:21:25
on the oceans the intelligence to
00:21:28
navigate the oceans before technology
00:21:30
how were people able to go around the
00:21:32
world it's because of the intelligence
00:21:34
Allah had given
00:21:37
them and Allah says we have
00:21:41
given sustenance from Pure Food this is
00:21:44
another sign of dignity that Allah
00:21:47
doesn't want us to just stuff ourselves
00:21:50
with whatever we want to eat whatever we
00:21:52
want to drink that we don't just abuse
00:21:54
our
00:21:55
bodies that there is a limit to what we
00:21:58
can consume
00:22:01
because what we put in aligns with the
00:22:05
dignity Allah has given us and Allah
00:22:08
says beyond
00:22:12
that that we have honored them
00:22:15
privileged them upon the majority of
00:22:19
creation because everything around us is
00:22:22
a creation of Allah but when it comes to
00:22:24
the celestial bodies when it comes to
00:22:26
the Animal Kingdom when it comes to the
00:22:28
plant life around us when it comes to
00:22:30
anything around us we have been given a
00:22:33
higher purpose which is beyond existence
00:22:37
our purpose in life is to worship Allah
00:22:40
is to acknowledge the greatness of Allah
00:22:42
this is mentioned
00:22:45
in month of Ramadan is coming up it is
00:22:48
the it is a great way and a and an
00:22:51
opportune time to remind ourselves and
00:22:54
to reorient ourselves with our ultimate
00:22:56
objective our life has to be more than
00:22:59
just thinking about what I'm what I'm
00:23:00
going to buy next has to be more than
00:23:03
just aiming to get to a higher income
00:23:06
bracket so I could earn and buy more
00:23:08
things it has to be more than that our
00:23:12
life has to be more than just you know
00:23:14
pleasures and
00:23:16
experiences what are we ultimately
00:23:18
living for Allah says this is what you
00:23:20
have been created for to acknowledge my
00:23:23
greatness
00:23:29
Allah says we have privileged you over
00:23:31
the majority of creation to the point
00:23:33
that the scholars say that when it comes
00:23:35
to the ranking of
00:23:38
creation the prophets the prophets are
00:23:42
at the top and of the prophets the
00:23:43
prophet sallallah wasam is the best of
00:23:46
creation and under him is the category
00:23:48
of prophets the ones of strong
00:23:56
resolve after those four Prophets is the
00:23:58
rest of the
00:24:00
prophets after the prophets is the four
00:24:03
main
00:24:05
angels and under him is the rest of
00:24:09
Believers from the gin and from the
00:24:11
humans because Allah has given us the
00:24:14
capacity to think and to make the right
00:24:17
choice this is how we are privileged
00:24:20
over the rest of creation and the
00:24:21
scholars say that the the worship of
00:24:25
human beings and the Jin are greater
00:24:27
than the worship of the an because the
00:24:29
Angels do not have the capacity to
00:24:31
disobey Allah but human beings are
00:24:34
constantly distracted by the world
00:24:36
around them we have The NPS that is
00:24:38
always within us trying to take us away
00:24:40
from Allah we have Shan trying to always
00:24:43
influence us we have the world always
00:24:45
trying to distract Us in the midst of
00:24:47
all of that noise if a person is able to
00:24:49
hone in on their purpose and objective
00:24:53
of worshiping Allah of making their life
00:24:56
meaningful
00:24:58
that's why they are that's why Allah has
00:25:01
given us privilege that's where our
00:25:03
dignity and honor comes from not from
00:25:05
owning things not from being in the
00:25:08
neighborhoods that we can be in because
00:25:10
ultimately it's all
00:25:12
fleeting and Allah says it's a privilege
00:25:15
because you have been given intelligence
00:25:16
and the capacity to reason and this
00:25:19
reason leads you towards
00:25:21
Allah and you choose to worship Allah
00:25:25
you choose to submit to Allah you don't
00:25:27
do what you want want to do even though
00:25:29
the world tells you do what you please
00:25:31
your body is your body do as you please
00:25:33
there's no one that can stop you as long
00:25:35
as you don't harm anyone as long as it's
00:25:37
not illegal you can do what you want
00:25:39
it's your wealth it's your money it's
00:25:40
your body
00:25:44
butam Allah has given us
00:25:47
dignity and that dignity makes us submit
00:25:50
to Allah but beyond beyond
00:25:55
worship says that Beyond existing and
00:25:57
surviving beyond the worship of Allah
00:26:00
there's a third tier of responsibilities
00:26:03
which
00:26:04
is Allah in the Quran tells us in Surah
00:26:07
Bak when he talks about the creation of
00:26:10
Adam even before the story of the
00:26:12
creation of Adam he tells us what is our
00:26:18
calling we are the representatives of
00:26:22
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
00:26:25
this is a dual purpose life not only to
00:26:29
worship Allah but to be an example to
00:26:33
show purpose to people who have
00:26:35
forgotten their
00:26:37
purpose who have been diverted by takur
00:26:40
who have been diverted by the World by
00:26:42
Shan by their NS we are supposed to
00:26:46
exemplify a way of living life that is
00:26:49
Meaningful ultimately meaningful not
00:26:52
just in the short term in the long term
00:26:55
and Khalifa doesn't just have to mean on
00:26:57
the Govern government level by simply
00:27:00
submitting to Allah and being who you
00:27:03
are and worshiping Allah and choosing to
00:27:06
live an ethical moral life according to
00:27:08
the Shar that is by that is being aif
00:27:12
you are showcasing to people a better
00:27:16
way of life Allah subhah wa tala guide
00:27:19
us and protect us give us knowledge that
00:27:20
benefits us may Allah subhana wa taal
00:27:22
give us all the ability to to divert our
00:27:25
hearts from the things that can distract
00:27:28
us from Allah may Allah subhanahu wa
00:27:30
taala give us all the ability to earn
00:27:32
and live in the way that is pleasing to
00:27:34
him may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala give
00:27:35
us the ability to use our life for the
00:27:38
purpose that he has created us to
00:27:40
Showcase this purpose for the people
00:27:42
around us Allah subhanahu guide bless
00:27:44
and protect us all
00:28:04
alhamdulillah
