00:00:00
hello I'm M maseri welcome to the
00:00:02
program we start this hour with the
00:00:03
latest on the electronic pager
00:00:05
explosions in Lebanon multiple Reports
00:00:08
say that Israel's mad spy agency placed
00:00:10
explosives in thousands of hisbah pages
00:00:14
before they detonated across Lebanon on
00:00:16
Tuesday so far Israel hasn't commented
00:00:20
and given the simultaneous explosions
00:00:22
hospitals in Lebanon have been
00:00:24
overwhelmed with casualties the
00:00:27
country's Health Ministry says at least
00:00:29
11 were killed among them an 8-year-old
00:00:32
girl thousands more were wounded with
00:00:34
hundreds in a critical condition in
00:00:36
hospital some were blinded others lost
00:00:39
fingers or required amputations the
00:00:43
context here is Hezbollah which is a
00:00:45
prescribed terrorist organization by the
00:00:47
UK and several other countries had been
00:00:50
using the pages instead of mobile phones
00:00:52
to communicate with each other that's
00:00:54
due to the risk of phones being hacked a
00:00:57
senior Lebanese Security Source told the
00:00:58
Reuters News agent
00:01:00
they were brought into the country
00:01:01
months ago now separately Israeli and US
00:01:05
sources say Israel detonated the pages
00:01:08
earlier than planned fearing that
00:01:10
Hezbollah had become aware of the plan
00:01:13
now in another development police have
00:01:15
visited the offices of a company in
00:01:17
Taiwan as the pages seem to carry a
00:01:19
Taiwanese brand the boss of the company
00:01:22
gold Apollo has denied any involvement
00:01:24
in the attacks he told reporters that
00:01:27
his company had signed an agreement 3
00:01:29
years ago go with a european-based
00:01:31
company BAC which has an address in
00:01:34
Budapest in Hungary here's a little of
00:01:36
what he said earlier in a hastily
00:01:38
arranged news conference in
00:01:44
taipe Gold Apollo in the past three
00:01:46
years has established a long-term
00:01:48
trademark authorization with BAC
00:01:51
company we have a regional agency
00:01:54
cooporation and a cooperation agreement
00:02:01
this product is not Apollo's product but
00:02:03
a product that I authorize our trademark
00:02:05
for them to
00:02:08
Brand this product is not in our company
00:02:11
the thing you found now it's not our
00:02:14
product your company no longer produces
00:02:16
the ar924 model it's not that we no
00:02:19
longer produce it they're not our
00:02:21
product from beginning to the end how
00:02:22
can we produce products that are not
00:02:24
ours are you 100% sure that the product
00:02:28
is not made in Taiwan 100% sure it is
00:02:31
not from your company
00:02:36
no well the United States and the UN
00:02:38
have called for restraint and calm after
00:02:41
the pager explosions we'll have more
00:02:43
reaction from the region shortly but
00:02:45
first here's a report from our
00:02:47
correspondent gra satchel and a warning
00:02:49
it does contain distressing images from
00:02:51
the very
00:02:54
start it was an audacious unprecedented
00:02:57
attack
00:03:00
all across Lebanon thousands of pages
00:03:02
exploding at the same time many were on
00:03:05
the
00:03:06
street hello some like here in people's
00:03:10
homes some in
00:03:13
[Music]
00:03:16
supermarkets Emergency Services struggle
00:03:18
to cope with the scale of the attack
00:03:20
thousands of Hezbollah members suffering
00:03:22
injuries in the same
00:03:24
instant Israel hasn't commented but few
00:03:27
have any doubts about its role so how
00:03:30
was Israel able to Target Hezbollah in
00:03:32
this way Hezbollah started using pages
00:03:35
and old technology after it realized its
00:03:38
mobile phones were being monitored the
00:03:40
theory is Israel knew Hezbollah had
00:03:43
ordered thousands of new pages and
00:03:45
intercepted the
00:03:47
shipment assuming that this was more
00:03:50
than just making lithium batteries you
00:03:53
know override and overheat but they had
00:03:55
planted small amounts of explosives in
00:03:57
each one of these pages then this was
00:04:00
unquestionably a calculated
00:04:02
attack on the border between Israel and
00:04:05
Lebanon there have been constant
00:04:06
exchanges of fire since the war in Gaza
00:04:09
began yesterday's attack will pile more
00:04:12
pressure into a region that is already
00:04:14
volatile and
00:04:16
precarious one of the scenarios that
00:04:18
this is just a beginning to disrupt
00:04:21
hezbollah's communication Network a
00:04:23
beginning of a much larger uh military
00:04:27
operation in Lebanon where when has
00:04:30
cannot communicate with each other the
00:04:32
Israelis will have a better chance at
00:04:34
winning or expanding the operations in
00:04:36
Lebanon funerals are already taking
00:04:39
place in Lebanon and with them warnings
00:04:42
we hold the Israeli enemy responsible
00:04:44
for all of the victims for all of the
00:04:46
martyrs for all of the wounded and we
00:04:48
believe that the reprisal and is is
00:04:51
coming in a statement the foreign office
00:04:54
said we continue to monitor the
00:04:55
situation in Lebanon closely and the UK
00:04:57
is working with diplomatic and
00:04:59
humanitarian Partners in the region the
00:05:01
civilian casualties following these
00:05:03
explosions are deeply distressing we
00:05:06
urge calm heads and deescalation at this
00:05:09
critical
00:05:10
time there is now considerable
00:05:13
International concern at what may come
00:05:16
next Graeme Satchel BBC
00:05:19
News let's speak now to Nada atah she's
00:05:22
a Beirut correspondent for the Middle
00:05:24
East base the national she's also
00:05:26
visited some of the hospitals where some
00:05:28
of the victims of the blast
00:05:30
were taken NADA thanks for your time uh
00:05:33
so I want to ask you straight away what
00:05:35
you've actually witnessed at that
00:05:37
hospital and some of the reaction from
00:05:39
Lebanese
00:05:41
civilians oh yeah thank you for having
00:05:43
me so I visited some hospitals yesterday
00:05:47
and it was a complete chaos in in in the
00:05:49
country in in the the capital and and in
00:05:52
hospitals there were like the Sirens of
00:05:55
of ambulances constant Sirens um wailing
00:05:59
in in Beirut um hospitals were uh
00:06:03
overwhelmed um I visited three hospitals
00:06:05
they would not let me in for security
00:06:07
reasons because the the Army had uh
00:06:10
closed the area and they would not let
00:06:12
anyone uh entered not even the family so
00:06:15
people were begging to be let in because
00:06:16
they had like family members worried for
00:06:19
their loved ones but they would not let
00:06:21
anyone in um so people would gathered
00:06:24
outside um in it was complete chaos uh I
00:06:27
interviewed some of the family members
00:06:30
uh they told me they've seen scene of
00:06:33
harrowing scenes of injuries of people
00:06:36
with their eyes uh people with Bloods
00:06:39
everywhere on their face um uh people
00:06:43
with um their their uh blood on their on
00:06:46
their hands and and very severe injuries
00:06:49
so and until very very late at night uh
00:06:52
yesterday we were hearing um the sirens
00:06:55
and the constant sound of the Sirens of
00:06:57
the ambulances transferring patients
00:06:59
during very late at night and NADA what
00:07:02
you're describing there it's it's a
00:07:04
large scale attack here something that's
00:07:07
really affected civilians uh in terms of
00:07:09
those linked to hisbah what do we know
00:07:12
in terms of who and and how many uh
00:07:15
people have been
00:07:17
injured so so far I think there's
00:07:20
currently uh a press conference from the
00:07:22
Ministry of Health but so far the
00:07:23
numbers of nearly 3,000 uh injured uh
00:07:28
200 severely and and nine killed among
00:07:31
them there's eight uh Fighters that
00:07:34
Hezbollah have announced and one child a
00:07:38
little girl who's eight years old but
00:07:40
there might be more because uh when I
00:07:42
went to the hospitals yesterday many
00:07:44
cases were very critical uh so it is it
00:07:47
is possible that might be more more more
00:07:50
death the death to might increase and
00:07:53
Iran's ambassador to Lebanon is said to
00:07:55
have been injured by the attack as well
00:07:58
uh what have we been hearing in terms of
00:08:00
response from either Hezbollah or even
00:08:04
Iran yes so yeah he's been his uh he
00:08:07
he's been injured but he said that his
00:08:09
situation it was a light injury uh
00:08:11
regarding the retaliation the response
00:08:13
so heah had said they will um be a
00:08:16
response there would be a severe and a
00:08:17
fair response to that attack uh we don't
00:08:21
know what it would be of course um
00:08:25
hassah Chief said he will be speaking
00:08:28
tonight uh about the most recent
00:08:30
development so we're expecting some more
00:08:33
more information tonight uh it's not the
00:08:36
first time that tensions are pecking
00:08:38
between uh Hezbollah and Israel and lots
00:08:40
of time we've been at in Lebanon at the
00:08:42
edge of a fulls scale War so we don't
00:08:44
know if that's going to be the the
00:08:46
escalation that's going to trigger um a
00:08:48
full-fledged war or it's going to be
00:08:50
another loop of violence that will be
00:08:51
followed by um a c more situation so
00:08:55
we're caught up in this Loops of
00:08:56
violence in Lebanon and it it's really
00:08:59
uncertain what's going to happen next
00:09:02
all right NADA thanks for your time that
00:09:04
was NADA atulah a Beirut correspondent
00:09:06
for the Middle East based the national
00:09:08
and as n mentioned there the hisbah
00:09:10
leader Hassan nasah is to make an
00:09:12
address tomorrow that's according to a
00:09:14
statement from the Iran backed group and
00:09:17
we do have a live page online right now
00:09:19
with the very latest developments
00:09:22
updates analysis as well from our
00:09:24
correspondents on what we know about
00:09:26
these pager explosions you'll find that
00:09:28
on the BBC News website and app
