00:00:00
one key element of a research paper is
00:00:03
the introduction why is it so important
00:00:06
well it's one of the first things that
00:00:08
the reviewers or your future readers are
00:00:11
going to read so if the introduction
00:00:14
isn't well written if you haven't
00:00:16
highlighted the research Gap if the
00:00:18
contribution and the novelty of your
00:00:19
paper aren't clear in the introduction
00:00:22
it's very likely that your paper will
00:00:25
get rejected so that's why in this video
00:00:27
I want to show you step by step how to
00:00:30
write the introduction for a research
00:00:32
paper so let's dive in and see how this
00:00:35
is done if you're new here my name
00:00:36
iskovic and I run academic English now
00:00:39
where I help PhD students and
00:00:41
researchers regularly write research
00:00:43
papers for scopus index journals and in
00:00:46
this video we're going to be
00:00:47
specifically focusing on the first
00:00:49
element of a research paper which is the
00:00:52
introduction and I know a lot of people
00:00:55
really struggle writing the
00:00:57
introductions we get stuck they don't
00:00:59
know what to right you know that there
00:01:02
is this idea as well that every
00:01:04
introduction is completely different and
00:01:07
it's just you know depends a lot on the
00:01:09
discipline and so on I mean granted you
00:01:12
know there are differences between
00:01:14
different researchers disciplines and so
00:01:17
on but they are really superficial it's
00:01:20
kind of like the iceberg so those
00:01:22
differences are the small that small tip
00:01:25
of the iceberg above the water and
00:01:28
everything else 80 of the introduction
00:01:31
is the same but because the differences
00:01:35
are above water this is what people
00:01:37
focus on but we want to be focusing on
00:01:39
the similarities because you know 80 90
00:01:43
of introductions across the fields and
00:01:46
really across research papers whether
00:01:48
this is a systematic review experimental
00:01:51
paper more theoretical paper is almost
00:01:53
exactly the same so what are these
00:01:56
elements of a research paper I'm gonna
00:01:58
explain them one by one to you and show
00:02:02
you as well on examples from real
00:02:05
research papers from different
00:02:07
disciplines how these elements are
00:02:09
applied
00:02:10
so what is the first one typically there
00:02:14
are two ways of starting a research
00:02:16
paper number one you present the
00:02:18
importance of the topic so you basically
00:02:21
tell the reader why on Earth should they
00:02:25
care about your study at all I know your
00:02:27
study is important to you your topic is
00:02:29
important to you I mean my topic is the
00:02:31
most important topic in the world for me
00:02:33
but why should other people care you
00:02:35
want to state that right at the very
00:02:38
beginning you know using phrases like a
00:02:40
considerable amount of research has been
00:02:42
devoted to so the importance can be for
00:02:45
your research field the importance of
00:02:47
the topic can be for the society in
00:02:49
general as well right it can be an
00:02:52
important problem that needs solving but
00:02:54
this needs to be stated right away and
00:02:56
the second way of starting the paper
00:02:58
that often goes together is the
00:03:00
definition of the key concept so very
00:03:04
often you know if the importance of the
00:03:07
topic is connected to the key concept
00:03:10
the researcher introduces the importance
00:03:12
and and defines the key concept so for
00:03:15
example if we think about medicine and a
00:03:18
disease like Alzheimer you know we could
00:03:21
State the importance of for the society
00:03:23
you know that you know millions of
00:03:25
people every day well you would have to
00:03:28
give a specific number are suffering
00:03:30
from Alzheimer's disease and this
00:03:33
disease is characterized by and then you
00:03:35
provide a definition right or you can
00:03:37
separate these two elements have the
00:03:39
importance of the topic and then a
00:03:40
definition right this is the usual way
00:03:43
of starting a paper number two the
00:03:46
second really important element is a
00:03:48
brief literature review and I stress the
00:03:51
word brief how brief it is can differ
00:03:54
from field to field in some Fields it
00:03:57
can be very short like one paragraph or
00:03:59
maybe two paragraphs in other fields it
00:04:01
can be slightly longer like maybe three
00:04:03
or five paragraphs but it's brief right
00:04:06
what you need to do here is identify
00:04:09
between two and maybe four any topics
00:04:14
that need to be introduced to the reader
00:04:16
before we can identify the research Gap
00:04:19
and stay at the end and you want to
00:04:21
organize these topics from General to
00:04:23
specific think about that as sort of the
00:04:25
inverted pyramid you know you have
00:04:27
General and then you go more and more
00:04:29
specific with these topics and basically
00:04:31
each paragraph in your literature review
00:04:33
will be devoted to one of these topics
00:04:37
right so you want to have between two
00:04:40
and maybe four paragraphs for this brief
00:04:43
literature review element number three
00:04:45
is the research Gap and if there's like
00:04:48
one element that is the most important
00:04:51
it is this one it's the research Gap I
00:04:55
can't tell you you know the number of
00:04:58
examples that I have where this was the
00:05:01
element that made the paper be rejected
00:05:04
you know even very recently on my
00:05:07
program when I was helping
00:05:09
um two different researchers from two
00:05:11
different disciplines both of them one
00:05:12
of their papers got rejected and the
00:05:17
other one came back with major
00:05:18
Corrections and you know when we read
00:05:21
the reviewers comments it seemed like
00:05:22
you know the paper was a total mess and
00:05:25
it they needed to start from scratch but
00:05:27
really the main problem was that the
00:05:30
contribution the novelty of the paper
00:05:32
just wasn't that like that the research
00:05:35
Gap wasn't there either so this is a
00:05:38
crucial element stating the research
00:05:40
graph this can be done in numerous
00:05:42
different ways right and I have another
00:05:44
video when I talk about the different
00:05:46
types of a research Camp but you know
00:05:48
you can point out the lack of research
00:05:49
limitations of previous studies you know
00:05:52
a specific problem that needs solving a
00:05:55
practical problem that needs solving
00:05:58
right and you want to do it in one nice
00:06:01
paragraph typically you start with
00:06:03
something like you know numerous studies
00:06:05
on XY and that have been conducted
00:06:07
however there is a lack of research on X
00:06:10
Y and Z in addition the previous studies
00:06:12
are limited because X Y and Z right and
00:06:15
then you explain what the problem is
00:06:17
once you've pointed out the research Gap
00:06:20
and it is clear why you're doing your
00:06:22
study well now you can tell us what your
00:06:25
study is about and state the aim of your
00:06:28
study please don't you know State the
00:06:30
AIM research questions objectives and
00:06:32
stuff like this you know just in one
00:06:35
maximum two sentences say what the aim
00:06:39
of your study is simply and and that's
00:06:42
it right now very often this is where
00:06:45
introductions end however there are two
00:06:48
optional elements that can sometimes be
00:06:50
useful and are sometimes used in
00:06:52
different fields and in different
00:06:54
journals the first one right after the
00:06:56
research Gap is you know kind of a quick
00:06:59
recap like a summary of the results in
00:07:02
like one or two sentences you know what
00:07:04
this paper shows you know and then also
00:07:07
connected to that what is the main
00:07:09
contribution of your paper most of the
00:07:12
time you know this is just said in the
00:07:15
conclusion section but in some journals
00:07:17
and some researchers like to say it
00:07:19
right in the introduction so it's clear
00:07:22
to the reviewers as well what novelty
00:07:25
your paper brings right so feel free to
00:07:28
do that right after the introduction in
00:07:30
one paragraph and say what the main
00:07:32
contribution is now the second optional
00:07:35
element which would end the introduction
00:07:37
is to present the structure of your
00:07:40
paper and this is common in some Fields
00:07:42
I wouldn't say it's very common across
00:07:45
different fields but you can do it if
00:07:47
you want to especially if you notice
00:07:48
that other people in your field are
00:07:50
doing it very simply you know in one
00:07:52
paragraph States how the paper is
00:07:55
organized that this paper is organized
00:07:57
into six sections and then in each
00:08:00
following sentence you can tell us what
00:08:03
each section is about
00:08:05
so now let me show you exactly how this
00:08:09
is actually done on an example of a
00:08:13
research paper and we'll look at each of
00:08:15
the sections that I've just mentioned to
00:08:17
you and we'll see how the writers
00:08:19
presented so let me show you two
00:08:21
examples in here from two different
00:08:24
fields so you have an idea how you know
00:08:27
the introduction is structured written
00:08:30
in slightly different fields so the
00:08:32
first example is actually from a paper
00:08:34
that I published a couple of years ago
00:08:36
so it's kind of social sciences teaching
00:08:39
English and the introduction is much
00:08:41
shorter the other paper is going to be
00:08:43
from psychology medicine that sort of
00:08:46
thing so much more sort of exact
00:08:48
sciences and the introduction is going
00:08:50
to be much longer so you're going to see
00:08:51
two very different ways of approaching
00:08:54
it which nevertheless follow a very
00:08:56
similar pattern
00:08:58
so this one starts with you know
00:09:02
establishing the importance of the topic
00:09:04
and defining the topic in here it's one
00:09:07
of and the same thing so we Define the
00:09:10
thing that we're going to talk about
00:09:11
because this thing is very important
00:09:14
right so you kind of kill two birds with
00:09:17
one stone and therefore make your
00:09:19
introduction shorter right so that's the
00:09:22
first element right importance of the
00:09:25
topic and defining any key Concepts and
00:09:28
number two we've got literature review
00:09:30
right and in here it's rather short it's
00:09:34
just one paragraph really right but it's
00:09:37
enough to kind of
00:09:39
present us what we need and the reason
00:09:42
why it's so short in here as well just
00:09:44
so you know is because in this
00:09:47
particular Journal they like having a
00:09:49
separate literature review section right
00:09:51
so that's why there is a um the one in
00:09:54
the introduction is very short
00:09:56
and then after that what we've got is
00:09:59
the research Gap basically right so
00:10:03
we've got nevertheless despite all this
00:10:05
literature we've got a lack of studies
00:10:07
right and we've got limitations of these
00:10:10
studies in terms of whether we're
00:10:12
conducted right and then this ends with
00:10:15
presenting the aim of the study right so
00:10:18
a very short introduction just three
00:10:20
paragraphs but notice that it follows
00:10:21
the same pattern that we've discussed
00:10:24
now moving to the other introduction
00:10:27
this one is slightly longer but well
00:10:31
actually much longer probably twice the
00:10:33
length but it still follows the same
00:10:34
pattern so we've got the importance of
00:10:37
the topic right and the definition of
00:10:41
the topic as well and then we continue
00:10:44
discussing that importance of the topic
00:10:47
right the growing complexity so we
00:10:50
basically talk about the importance of
00:10:52
the topic for the discipline right and
00:10:56
this is further explored here again why
00:10:59
is this topic so crucial for this
00:11:01
discipline right now right and then
00:11:04
we've got a literature review in here
00:11:06
you'll see that the literature review is
00:11:08
much longer right so we basically
00:11:10
reviewing and reviewing the the
00:11:12
literature leading to the problem and
00:11:17
first we've got a more practical problem
00:11:20
in here right despite all this progress
00:11:23
and all these that is there is this
00:11:25
problem in practice in medical education
00:11:28
right and then afterwards we also have
00:11:32
the research Gap right so we've got a
00:11:36
lack of understanding that there's
00:11:38
uncertainty about something right and
00:11:41
there is a lack of research so there are
00:11:43
different research gaps combined here
00:11:45
which makes it much stronger right and
00:11:48
then we've got the aim of the study and
00:11:51
specifically what was done and they also
00:11:54
present that hypothesis right in here
00:11:58
um as well notice that none of the two
00:12:00
papers that I showed here present the
00:12:02
kind of the main contributions and the
00:12:05
structure of the paper which as I
00:12:06
mentioned are optional and they're not
00:12:09
really that common across disciplines so
00:12:13
as you can see an introduction to the
00:12:15
research paper follows a very
00:12:17
predictable structure that is almost
00:12:19
exactly the same regardless of the field
00:12:21
that you're in and regardless of the
00:12:23
type of the paper that you're actually
00:12:24
writing so start with the importance of
00:12:27
the top topic and maybe the definition
00:12:28
of a key concept then briefly review the
00:12:31
literature present the research Gap and
00:12:34
this is crucial super important don't
00:12:36
forget to present the research Gap State
00:12:38
the aim and then optionally State the
00:12:40
main contributions of your paper and
00:12:42
present the organization of the paper
00:12:44
now if you want to work with me more
