- 00:00:06um inside like um uh the what do they
- 00:00:09call it steam nextfest we got summer
- 00:00:11sale we've got E3 type of conferences
- 00:00:14related like online things lot of
- 00:00:16promotion opportunities we had like two
- 00:00:18event notifications like yesterday
- 00:00:20saying like sign up for these events a
- 00:00:21lot of events coming in so I want to
- 00:00:23check in with the community make sure
- 00:00:25you're ready for the summer and then
- 00:00:27part of that is just got back from GDC
- 00:00:29and I always do this um conference recap
- 00:00:32which is the inside conference I picked
- 00:00:34the best speakers that I saw at GDC and
- 00:00:36I say hey why don't I just do a little
- 00:00:38micro conference I'll interview you
- 00:00:40about what you talked about some of the
- 00:00:42things then you just get this nice
- 00:00:45conference you don't have to travel to
- 00:00:47GDC you can stay inside it's all virtual

- 00:01:38gave two talks at GDC and one of them
- 00:01:40just went up on Tik Tok and even the Tik
- 00:01:43Tok clip is getting more views than a
- 00:01:46video about balers Gate 3 kissing that's
- 00:01:48a Hot Topic everybody wants to know
- 00:01:50about that my Tik tok's getting higher
- 00:01:52than that people want this information
- 00:01:54and it's about um it was the steam
- 00:01:56Secrets Tik Tok thing that was my talk
- 00:01:59like all these steam secrets that people
- 00:02:01don't really talk about but they're very
- 00:02:02valuable like they get you hundreds of
- 00:02:04thousands of dollars now there's a lot
- 00:02:06of cave you have to have a a game that's
- 00:02:07reached real Steam and we'll talk about
- 00:02:09that but those same talks same content
- 00:02:11I'm giving in this inside conference so
- 00:02:14we'll cover in there so I'm seeing
- 00:02:15questions pop in that's great keep
- 00:02:17popping those questions in um now part
- 00:02:19of this um inside conference that's the
- 00:02:20old one so this is the old one when I
- 00:02:22got Co and couldn't go to San Francisco
- 00:02:23the new one looks like
- 00:02:26this um uh it's also saying like if you
- 00:02:29didn't get to go to San Francisco X on
- 00:02:31the Golden Gate Bridge um you can go
- 00:02:34virtually to this thing so the inside
- 00:02:36conference this one here's the speakers
- 00:02:38uh uh that we're going to have and it
- 00:02:40starts all over the next um three weeks
- 00:02:45so I space them out they're all virtual
- 00:02:47so what you do is you you sign up for
- 00:02:49the thing and then what you have to do
- 00:02:51is you have to go through and um sign up
- 00:02:54for every webinar for each one of these
- 00:02:55sessions and they were sprinkled because
- 00:02:57people are busy so I just I don't like
- 00:02:59it like a huge talk it blows my brain
- 00:03:01it's basically one to two talks mostly
- 00:03:03one talk per day over the next two to
- 00:03:05three weeks and uh basically it's a it's
- 00:03:09a live um call we've got Jenny um who is
- 00:03:14an influencer contact you know she she
- 00:03:16directs influencer relations she's going
- 00:03:18to teach you how to like contact streams
- 00:03:20like how do you literally write the
- 00:03:21email people always talk about like how
- 00:03:23do I email them we're going to talk
- 00:03:25about it I'm going to ask her about it
- 00:03:26we got uh Thomas uh Thomas is from
- 00:03:29future friends found our future friends
- 00:03:30the publisher they just published larah
- 00:03:32Kingdom he's got a thing like how much
- 00:03:34do you spend on marketing I get that
- 00:03:35question all the time people like well
- 00:03:37how much do I spend on marketing every
- 00:03:38time he's he breaks it down we're gonna
- 00:03:40go step by step how much do you have to
- 00:03:42spend on marketing um Leni I always say
- 00:03:46p puzzle games are a hard very very very
- 00:03:49very very hard to Market well she
- 00:03:50figured it out figure out how to Market
- 00:03:52a a puzzle game did very well with down
- 00:03:55bun burough it's a really cute game
- 00:03:57we're going to talk about like okay yes
- 00:03:59it's hard marketing a puzzle game but
- 00:04:01how do you do it and then we have um
- 00:04:05thas let me scroll down so you can see
- 00:04:06his name Tomas um he just did a bullwark
- 00:04:10falcon Chronicles uh city-builder is
- 00:04:14game did very well he used a demo
- 00:04:16throughout he even launched with the
- 00:04:18demo still live I want to ask him like
- 00:04:20how do you build a demo you know what
- 00:04:21are the secrets to it how do you Market
- 00:04:23your game using a demo which is really
- 00:04:26the hot thing and then there's me I'm
- 00:04:27giving those two talks that are behind
- 00:04:31pay wall at GDC well I'm giving them at
- 00:04:34this and I'm also going to do a steam
- 00:04:36page critique so if you've got a steam
- 00:04:39page um and you want me to take a look
- 00:04:41at it um when you get this conference
- 00:04:44there'll be a form you submit your steam
- 00:04:45page and I'll look through them now I
- 00:04:46don't do everybody who submits because
- 00:04:48sometimes it's the same problems over
- 00:04:49and over again and I don't like to
- 00:04:50repeat myself so I'll look and if
- 00:04:53there's a common theme among a lot of
- 00:04:54them I'll just say oh these commonly had
- 00:04:56this so there's no guarantee that if you
- 00:04:58get into the conference and you page
- 00:04:59it'll be done because maybe your page is
- 00:05:02perfect then I'm like it's perfect
- 00:05:03there's that's not good content so I
- 00:05:05only pick out certain ones uh but I'll
- 00:05:07try and get as many as I can and then
- 00:05:09finally we got the folks from Hood horse
- 00:05:11they got kind of got broken between the
- 00:05:12two lines but snow and Tim from hooded
- 00:05:15horse they're an awesome publisher they
- 00:05:17have never had an unsuccessful game
- 00:05:18published under hooded horse it's
- 00:05:20amazing um so I asked them like how how
- 00:05:23how are we how do you get published by
- 00:05:25hooded horse or Publishers in general
- 00:05:26they have a very unique way of doing it
- 00:05:28they don't have pitch decks they don't
- 00:05:29do it they're just like your game's cool
- 00:05:31come on in and then you do amazing so
- 00:05:33that's uh the those folks so that's the
- 00:05:35conference and again here's a secret
- 00:05:37thing if you buy it right during this
- 00:05:40hour this hour I this is the lowest
- 00:05:42discount it's going to be I knocked $15

- 00:06:40ideal time to enter steam next Fest you
- 00:06:43want to do the last one before you
- 00:06:46launch and here's the reason why steam
- 00:06:49nextfest always kind of ranks games it's
- 00:06:50not explicit it's not like the most
- 00:06:52wishlisted the the wish the game's in
- 00:06:54wish list order that's not the case but
- 00:06:56for some reason they kind of the
- 00:06:57algorithm kind of promotes the games
- 00:06:59that already have a ton of wish lists so
- 00:07:01you want to go in as hot as possible to
- 00:07:03steam next usest with as many wish lists
- 00:07:05as you can and also at the end you've
- 00:07:08you've kind of like figured out your
- 00:07:10marketing you you know which influencers
- 00:07:12like your game you like all this stuff
- 00:07:14and you want to do it at the end because
- 00:07:16what you want to do is and this goes
- 00:07:18probably going to get a question about
- 00:07:19this before nextfest I would say like
- 00:07:21the couple weeks before you do steam
- 00:07:23nextfest you want to do a big marketing
- 00:07:25beat you want to get streamers to play
- 00:07:27your game way before like two to three
- 00:07:29weeks before steam nextfest because you
- 00:07:31want to be rolling in hot with lots of
- 00:07:33wish list generated and it's easier to
- 00:07:36do that if you've already built contacts
- 00:07:38with streamers maybe somebody streamed
- 00:07:40your demo and earlier and they liked it
- 00:07:44come back to them say hey I had a new
- 00:07:45content I put your avatar in the game
- 00:07:47you're one of them NPCs or whatever I
- 00:07:49don't know what and then then they play
- 00:07:52they're like oh cool I'll play it couple
- 00:07:54weeks before steam nextfest that gives
- 00:07:56you more wish list in the short bit
- 00:07:57before nextfest and then you roll into
- 00:07:59it it's very hard to do that if it's
- 00:08:00your first thing like oh we just
- 00:08:01launched our steam page we're going to
- 00:08:02opt in a next vest I also don't
- 00:08:05recommend you launch your demo during
- 00:08:07nextfest in other words like nobody's
- 00:08:08seen it you want your demo to be well
- 00:08:12like a good baseball mid if you're not
- 00:08:13an American you always have to work your
- 00:08:15baseball mid in you always have to oil
- 00:08:16it and park a car on it you want that
- 00:08:18like your demo like yeah we tried it
- 00:08:20we've tested it we've done another F
- 00:08:22bunch of festivals we have streamers
- 00:08:24play it we know all the Kinks because a
- 00:08:26lot of times um there's weird things
- 00:08:28about your demo like oh uh if you push
- 00:08:30down when you push the start button it
- 00:08:32crashes the game you don't want people
- 00:08:34discovering that on your next Fest the
- 00:08:35next Fest is your grand finale before
- 00:08:37you launch your game so do the last
- 00:08:39nextfest don't launch your demo with
- 00:08:41nextfest launch your demo much earlier
- 00:08:43get the Kinks out and then go from there
- 00:08:45all right next question um how do you
- 00:08:48generate initial visibility for your
- 00:08:50game this is a great question um I'll be
- 00:08:54talking about that kind of in the one of
- 00:08:56my talks that is in this inside
- 00:08:57conference I've got one that's called
- 00:08:59the new meta on Steam here's what it is
- 00:09:01this is the basic One initial impression
- 00:09:04is you got to make a good trailer
- 00:09:06announcing your game and it's got to be
- 00:09:08really catchy action first no logos no
- 00:09:11slow roll where you just slowly pan
- 00:09:13across an environment or like text
- 00:09:15emerges from the mist and it says in a
- 00:09:17world of fantasy where are the seven
- 00:09:20keys of am you don't do that you just go
- 00:09:22straight into gameplay gameplay gameplay
- 00:09:24big explosions big sword fights whatever
- 00:09:26it is exciting and you title this
- 00:09:28trailer announce trailer for some reason
- 00:09:30when you put the word announce trailer
- 00:09:32it gets more views because it's you're
- 00:09:33announcing your game so you announce
- 00:09:35your game with that you reach out to
- 00:09:36streamers ahead of time ticktockers
- 00:09:38reach out to IGN see if they'd like your
- 00:09:40trailer before you launch it and say hey
- 00:09:41we're gonna launch a trailer on this
- 00:09:43date would you like to get that special
- 00:09:46um access yes maybe the other thing that
- 00:09:49you can do is before you're going to
- 00:09:51launch your uh announce your game um
- 00:09:54look at these festivals how tomarket a
- 00:09:56game.com festivals we always do these
- 00:09:58festivals apply for some festivals now
- 00:10:01you got to kind of do the backwards
- 00:10:02algebra to figure out when you're going
- 00:10:03to launch and when the festival is
- 00:10:05happening say we're going to announce
- 00:10:07our game would you like to have the
- 00:10:08exclusive announce during this Festival
- 00:10:11festivals love if you've got an early
- 00:10:13announce if you're announcing something
- 00:10:15at their Festival because it gives them
- 00:10:16an extra boost of visibility so the
- 00:10:18combination of the announced trailer
- 00:10:19which you've reached out to Tik tokers
- 00:10:21uh YouTubers possibly streamers and
- 00:10:24IGN's trailer Department you get that
- 00:10:28coverage Plus the exclusive reveal in
- 00:10:30the festival if you can get those to
- 00:10:32time that's not always there your game
- 00:10:34has to be awesome to get into those that
- 00:10:36is the best way to launch a game that's
- 00:10:37the best way to announce don't just put
- 00:10:38it out there and do like one half-ass
- 00:10:40tweet like a week later and be like oh
- 00:10:42yeah we launched our game don't just put
- 00:10:43it out there you have to have the
- 00:10:44trailer has to be awesome okay um what
- 00:10:48Benjamin what have I been playing lately
- 00:10:50well bun Barrow been playing a little
- 00:10:52research that's fun um I've also I play
- 00:10:56a lot of Plants versus Zombies with my
- 00:10:57kid because he likes it every every
- 00:11:00stripe Garden Warfare 2 Garden Warfare 3
- 00:11:04uh I tried to install the Plants versus
- 00:11:05Zombies 3 but I don't have a region lock
- 00:11:08I don't know how to do that I try to get
- 00:11:09a VPN to do it but it's too hard big big
- 00:11:12big uh PL fors zombies house okay so if
- 00:11:16you're just joining us thank you so much

- 00:11:24festivals coming up in the summer months
- 00:11:26until August when all of Europe goes on
- 00:11:28vacation for some reason and then the
- 00:11:30festivals stop in August but we're
- 00:11:31entering into that season so you got to
- 00:11:33be ready I mean I know it seems early
- 00:11:34but a lot of these festivals and stuff
- 00:11:36start organizing now so I always
- 00:11:39recommend how tomarket agame.com

- 00:11:43and they are a lot open right now apply
- 00:11:45apply apply hope that you get in because
- 00:11:48it's a big busy season coming up so now
- 00:11:51is the time to think about it if you

- 00:11:54Fest get that demo out now I'd say get
- 00:11:57that demo out now if you can or at least
- 00:11:59run a beta if you're not ready to full
- 00:12:00launch it start testing the beta you do
- 00:12:02not want to debut your trailer or your
- 00:12:05um your demo during nextfest I know that
- 00:12:06sounds weird but remember nextfest
- 00:12:08always let you in okay they always let
- 00:12:11you in but other festivals don't you
- 00:12:15have to have something special to bring
- 00:12:17to the festival so when you're applying
- 00:12:18for these festivals some of the things
- 00:12:19are like hey what can you bring to us
- 00:12:21our Festival you could say we're
- 00:12:22debuting our our our new demo nobody's
- 00:12:25played this demo you would be the debut
- 00:12:27and then those Festival organizers like
- 00:12:29like that's pretty cool we're going to
- 00:12:31let this person in because they're
- 00:12:33debuting something that's awesome that's
- 00:12:35awesome so they will let you in
- 00:12:37sometimes that's another like carrot
- 00:12:39that you can dangle in from and say let
- 00:12:41us in let us in and they're like yes new
- 00:12:43demo release that's what I always
- 00:12:44recommend don't debut your demo during
- 00:12:47nextfest because that's the Big Show
- 00:12:48that's a grand finale if you're debuting
- 00:12:50your demo and we're going to talk about
- 00:12:52this in my
- 00:12:53talk you you you want to you want to
- 00:12:56warm this up before so that because
- 00:12:58sometimes there's bugs or you're like
- 00:13:00God that tutorial everybody hates a
- 00:13:02tutorial that's not good right you want
- 00:13:05to work those bugs out before but anyway
- 00:13:07so um yeah part of the reason I'm also
- 00:13:09doing this is today I'm launching the

- 00:14:06can be you a game could be on sale or
- 00:14:08not and it's very similar to steam
- 00:14:10nextfest you want to generate a little
- 00:14:12bit burst of traffic right before the
- 00:14:14festival starts okay and um what you can
- 00:14:19do is like I said streamers maybe reach
- 00:14:21out to some Tik tokers maybe try and

- 00:14:24for every Festival we never know what
- 00:14:25they look like until they happen they
- 00:14:27usually have a trend
- 00:14:29widget a widget that says trending games
- 00:14:31or most played demos something like that
- 00:14:34they always have something like that so
- 00:14:35if you come in hot just before the
- 00:14:38festival you you you increase the
- 00:14:40visibility you're going to be higher up
- 00:14:42on that festival and that's that's an
- 00:14:43important thing the other thing is I
- 00:14:45would check my tags make sure that your
- 00:14:47tags are very relevant don't lie about
- 00:14:49your tags don't a lot of people ask
- 00:14:50what's the most popular tags that's not
- 00:14:52the thing make them the most relevant
- 00:14:54because a lot of those fests they break
- 00:14:56down subcategories within there so if
- 00:14:58it's like a ser survival Festival they
- 00:15:00might have farming survival or Zombie
- 00:15:02Survival and so you want to make sure
- 00:15:04your tags are there because they're kind
- 00:15:05of an autogenerated based off of your
- 00:15:07subtags and stuff so just make sure
- 00:15:09everything's accurate the other thing I
- 00:15:11would do is if your game's for sale
- 00:15:13might be time to do a Content update
- 00:15:14again you get that generated up boost of
- 00:15:18traffic leading into the festival so if
- 00:15:20you drop a big update get streamers to
- 00:15:23play that's great and then your title
- 00:15:25for your capsule looks different like
- 00:15:27maybe put you know like update or
- 00:15:29something on your capsule that looks
- 00:15:31different when people are scanning that
- 00:15:33that steam Festival page so all those
- 00:15:34things are really great ways to do that
- 00:15:37now um I'm going to flip over to a bunch
- 00:15:39of people had uh Q&A to submitted early
- 00:15:42they couldn't be here today and yes this
- 00:15:44is being recorded everything I do is
- 00:15:46recorded um so I want to answer some of
- 00:15:49the questions of people who submitted
- 00:15:50early so these are questions from people
- 00:15:52that submitted early um okay um why is
- 00:15:58the games industry struggling and why
- 00:16:00teaching marketing is more profitable
- 00:16:02than selling indie games that's that's
- 00:16:04directed right at me okay so why is the
- 00:16:06industry struggling Here's my thought is
- 00:16:08its interest rates um the industry uh
- 00:16:12you
- 00:16:12know it's it's a lot of credit that that
- 00:16:15the industry runs on and so there's a
- 00:16:18lot of investors uh I I knew like about
- 00:16:20five years ago when I first started
- 00:16:22doing this stuff um Hollywood was just
- 00:16:24dumping money on video games because
- 00:16:26they're like we got so much money we
- 00:16:27don't even know what to do with all this
- 00:16:28money let's uh let's buy video games
- 00:16:30let's put money in video games and so a
- 00:16:32lot of Studios like Publishers Studios
- 00:16:35were just getting money from Hollywood
- 00:16:37from the movie makers like hey we think
- 00:16:39we need to diversify our portfolio buy
- 00:16:40some stuff they're just getting free
- 00:16:41money and so a lot of Studios were
- 00:16:44upgrading they were like all right we'll
- 00:16:45just hire up we're gonna make more games
- 00:16:47we're we're getting all this money what
- 00:16:48are we gonna do with it so that's what
- 00:16:49they were doing and so there was this
- 00:16:52bubble because cheap credit cash was
- 00:16:54cheap it was Zero interest rates
- 00:16:56basically they could do all this stuff
- 00:16:58so they upgraded the thing so I think
- 00:16:59the industry is actually like it's it's
- 00:17:02at the same growth trajectory it always
- 00:17:04was but then all of a sudden all this
- 00:17:05cash from free money came in and so the
- 00:17:08studios hired up and now that's over I
- 00:17:11mean the interest rates are high because
- 00:17:12of inflation so they're lowering the the
- 00:17:14you know the interest rates are going up
- 00:17:16so people aren't just throwing money at
- 00:17:18us anymore and so um that was an
- 00:17:21artificial inflated thing and it's just
- 00:17:23deflating that a little bit so I know it
- 00:17:24looks like the whole industry is
- 00:17:26crashing but I think it's just returning
- 00:17:27to what it should be outside that bubble
- 00:17:29I think that's I think it's basically
- 00:17:31what happened um and so that's what it
- 00:17:33is and why is it more profitable to make
- 00:17:35to do this um it's because I'm better at
- 00:17:38this than I am making games I kind of
- 00:17:40realize I'm not actually good at making
- 00:17:41games like I just you have to realize
- 00:17:44your strengths and my strength is I just
- 00:17:46don't I don't have it I don't have that
- 00:17:48magic you know I say it's the magic I
- 00:17:50don't know how to make games like I know
- 00:17:52how to make them like put them together
- 00:17:53but I don't know how to make a game like
- 00:17:55a game that is made you know that's like
- 00:17:58the magic I just don't have the touch I
- 00:18:00don't have it but the magic thing is I
- 00:18:03do have the touch of looking at charts
- 00:18:05and I do have the touch of explain to
- 00:18:07people what that chart means um so I
- 00:18:09just love it I found my secret power was
- 00:18:11I can I love spreadsheets and I love to
- 00:18:14just like deep dive look at
- 00:18:16data just study things and then knit
- 00:18:20together a narrative that makes sense
- 00:18:21for people so I always say follow your
- 00:18:23superpower and even if you like games
- 00:18:26which I love I love games
- 00:18:28um it doesn't have to be making games
- 00:18:30that's the whole thing is you don't have
- 00:18:32to make games that's not that the
- 00:18:34Pinnacle a lot of people like if I'm not
- 00:18:35making games then I'm not the Ultimate
- 00:18:37Gamer no you can just if you find a way
- 00:18:40to to do what you love it doesn't
- 00:18:43necessarily have to be making the game
- 00:18:44like literally putting the pixels just
- 00:18:47and that's that's a thing that you only
- 00:18:48get when you turn 40 or maybe 30
- 00:18:51somewhere when you've kind of matured
- 00:18:52you're like a fine wine once You'
- 00:18:54matured you're like wait a minute let's
- 00:18:56do what I'm really good at and that's
- 00:18:58just an important life lesson kids all
- 00:19:00right so um I am designing a 3D int well
- 00:19:04actually I didn't understand this
- 00:19:05question I am sorry I didn't understand
- 00:19:06this question it was I think it was kind
- 00:19:08of a capsule question um how do you it
- 00:19:11was like I'll just I'll just read it I
- 00:19:14I'll do it because you subit the
- 00:19:14question I'm designing a 3D intricate
- 00:19:16private box for gamers to enter the game
- 00:19:18Space without playing at all it's like
- 00:19:20Metro station for capsule for steam do
- 00:19:22you think it's a good
- 00:19:23idea I don't actually know what this
- 00:19:26question is I am sorry I shouldn't I
- 00:19:28should have just skipped this question
- 00:19:29I'm sorry I don't understand that
- 00:19:30question it sounds very high level and
- 00:19:32very interesting I just don't know what
- 00:19:34it is okay for developers hedging their
- 00:19:37bets by making multiple games
- 00:19:38specifically what are the latest Steam
- 00:19:40tips strategies that we should know
- 00:19:42right now uh here's what I would do and
- 00:19:45again this is kind of covered in the
- 00:19:46secrets thing if you're making small
- 00:19:47quick release games I would time it
- 00:19:50around on Steam nextfest make sure that
- 00:19:51you have a demo ready for steam nextfest
- 00:19:54reach out to streamers that's like half
- 00:19:56the battle if you could do stream here
- 00:19:58here's actually the I would do okay
- 00:20:01let's pretend you're making a game in 3
- 00:20:02months which is crazy but let's say six
- 00:20:05months six months is how long you should
- 00:20:06make it three months to make it six
- 00:20:08months to Market it you should do a
- 00:20:09minimum of six months okay so month one
- 00:20:12do a big announcement trailer try and
- 00:20:13get it into IGN get ticktockers to play
- 00:20:15it post it on Reddit see if that works
- 00:20:17if it doesn't work your next bet is get
- 00:20:19a demo out as soon as you can get that
- 00:20:21demo out get it to streamers to play
- 00:20:23after they've played it a lot then do
- 00:20:25the last next Fest do any festivals that
- 00:20:28are on how Market game.com festal apply
- 00:20:30for all those festivals hope you get
- 00:20:31into some then time it do Steam nextfest
- 00:20:34and then shortly after steam nextfest
- 00:20:36launch your game that's how you launch a
- 00:20:37game in six months oh after three months
- 00:20:40development there's no rule here's the
- 00:20:41other thing even if you make a quick
- 00:20:42game let's say you take three months one
- 00:20:45month two months there's no rule that
- 00:20:47says as soon as you push commit to your
- 00:20:51repository to get or something you
- 00:20:52finish the game it's gold you push get
- 00:20:55you immediately have to release the game
- 00:20:56there's no rule in the universe that
- 00:20:59that has to happen so even if you finish
- 00:21:01the game in one month I would still do
- 00:21:03six months of marketing so it's like all
- 00:21:05done it's gold just sit on it and Market
- 00:21:07Market Market Market your heart out
- 00:21:08until six months and then launch it
- 00:21:11steam did analysis six months is like
- 00:21:12the minimum best time to do it unless it
- 00:21:15goes Super viral look up this game
- 00:21:16called don't scream they went super
- 00:21:18viral in two weeks they got 100,000 wish
- 00:21:20list because indie game Joe is kind of a
- 00:21:22Twitter genius he went viral two weeks
- 00:21:25100,000 wish lists it's a horror game
- 00:21:27which kids always make a horror game he
- 00:21:30launched it shortly after that and and
- 00:21:32it did good so that's the only time I'd
- 00:21:34say do it quick is if it's getting hot
- 00:21:36and you get a 100,000 and it's ready to
- 00:21:37go just go for it what else are you
- 00:21:39waiting for just get it all right let's
- 00:21:41go back to the questions that are asked
- 00:21:43live great questions
- 00:21:45everyone um all right any idea why steam
- 00:21:50loves strategy games but not RTS here's
- 00:21:53my theory okay so um I've done enough
- 00:21:55genre research and just watching games
- 00:21:57for some reason RTS just isn't just
- 00:22:00doesn't do it I don't know I love RTS
- 00:22:03Starcraft 2 is one of my favorite games
- 00:22:04it's probably my most played game and
- 00:22:06the most rage
- 00:22:07inducing um okay I like rtss but if you
- 00:22:11note I like just a few rtss I like
- 00:22:15Starcraft 2 and I could I can sometimes
- 00:22:18I still have dreams of doing the Teran
- 00:22:20build order for Starcraft 2 I still have
- 00:22:22dreams I'm like oh my God I'm not making
- 00:22:23Supply Depot BS BS BS um I still have
- 00:22:28dreams of that thing here's the thing
- 00:22:29about RTS is they're very similar to
- 00:22:32fighting games in that you have to
- 00:22:35specialize in an RTS um RTS fans um
- 00:22:40specialize they're like this is my RTS
- 00:22:42I'm going to learn the build order for
- 00:22:43Taran I'm G to go there they don't T
- 00:22:45they're not omnivorous okay the other
- 00:22:47thing is and it's kind of Taken um I
- 00:22:51think a big portion of the RTS audience
- 00:22:53has been taken over by doas the League
- 00:22:56of Legends style you know Lords
- 00:22:58management games okay they've been
- 00:23:00captured there so a big portion of the
- 00:23:02audience has been carved out by those
- 00:23:03games and those games are Hobbies now
- 00:23:06that is your life so those games you are
- 00:23:08competing with those games and like I
- 00:23:10said people only specialize in one RTS
- 00:23:12that's just the nature of it it's also
- 00:23:14very hard uh RTS are very hard I just
- 00:23:16didn't very much to making games I just
- 00:23:18don't have the touch for RTS I played
- 00:23:19with a guy who's Grandmaster he was a
- 00:23:22friend of mine and I was having them
- 00:23:23help me I couldn't do it he was like
- 00:23:25don't forget your Supply Depot Supply
- 00:23:26Depot you got to expand you got to EXP
- 00:23:28and I was like I just don't have it
- 00:23:30after that I'd played for hundreds of
- 00:23:31hours and he he coached me through I was
- 00:23:33like I don't have it um a lot of people
- 00:23:35just can't do rtss at the premium level
- 00:23:38and so they specialize they can't do it
- 00:23:40at the premium level and that's it and
- 00:23:42that's the audience so the audience is
- 00:23:44taken by that the other genres like a
- 00:23:45strategy genre are much more chill a lot
- 00:23:48of them are turn-based so people can
- 00:23:49chill streamers can stop the stream chat
- 00:23:51it Up chat with the audience get back to
- 00:23:54to doing their strategy whereas an RTS
- 00:23:56you have to lock in so a lot of the
- 00:23:57streamers are locked in unless you're a
- 00:23:59strategy player like um you know like
- 00:24:02day9 or something who who can play the
- 00:24:04RTS games and talk and then they do it
- 00:24:07so it's it's hard to stream the audience
- 00:24:08is very solo they they they lock into a
- 00:24:11single RTS so they're not as amuous they
- 00:24:13don't try as many strategy games and
- 00:24:15that's what it is I think that's I think
- 00:24:17that's why rtss don't work that's just
- 00:24:18my theory um but that's why rtss just
- 00:24:21don't do that okay um you shouldn't
- 00:24:23release in the steam nextfest I heard
- 00:24:25how long before and after would it be
- 00:24:26okay I get this question all the time
- 00:24:28and I don't know and here's the reason
- 00:24:31is well okay steam nextfest takes over
- 00:24:33the page so you lose out on the steam uh
- 00:24:36the new and trending popular upcoming or
- 00:24:37they do have it but it's way way Deep
- 00:24:39Way deep down so you lose that
- 00:24:41visibility from that widget now a lot of
- 00:24:44people are like well I'm gonna be smart
- 00:24:45and I get this question all the time
- 00:24:46like I am gonna launch a week after
- 00:24:49steam nextfest immediately after is that
- 00:24:52isn't that smart I don't think it is
- 00:24:54because I've been asked that question so
- 00:24:56many times here's the thing when you
- 00:24:58launch it's not how big the game you're
- 00:25:00launching against is it is how many
- 00:25:02games you are launching next to and if
- 00:25:04everybody's asking me I'm going to
- 00:25:05launch right after steam nextest when I
- 00:25:06have all this momentum I don't know why
- 00:25:08they're wagging the finger at me but
- 00:25:09they sometimes do uh then then it's like
- 00:25:13if everybody's asking that that means
- 00:25:14everybody's thinking that that means a
- 00:25:16lot of games are going to launch right
- 00:25:17at that time which is not good because
- 00:25:20popular upcoming and new and trending
- 00:25:22have 12 10 spots 10 game spots and if
- 00:25:26there's 10 games launching on the same
- 00:25:28day that's bad because you're crowded
- 00:25:30out of popular upcoming and new and
- 00:25:32trending not good that's a big Miss
- 00:25:34invisibility that you could get that's
- 00:25:37why I'm thinking look at steamdb will
- 00:25:39list all the games that are coming out
- 00:25:41that's a better thing to do it doesn't
- 00:25:42matter if it's after steam next F or not
- 00:25:44just look at how many games are
- 00:25:45releasing every week I haven't done the
- 00:25:47analysis that's what I'm waiting on I
- 00:25:48should do it look to see right around
- 00:25:51after nextfest are there like 12 games
- 00:25:53in the queue that are like hot they've
- 00:25:55got at least 7,000 wish lists and
- 00:25:56they're going to you know possibly
- 00:25:58launch okay which leads to the next
- 00:26:00question which was submitted by a Vier
- 00:26:03who couldn't come today they asked
- 00:26:05what's the deal with 7,000 this is a
- 00:26:07basic question but everybody needs to
- 00:26:09know it okay why do I always say you
- 00:26:11need 7,000 wish list before you launch
- 00:26:14okay um so steam doesn't give a lot of
- 00:26:17so let me back up a little bit here the
- 00:26:19whole reason you're on Steam is because
- 00:26:21steam amplifies visibility and when you
- 00:26:26sell well they give you more visibility
- 00:26:29and most of the big things and this is
- 00:26:31what I talk about in my uh inside
- 00:26:33conference I'm going to talk about
- 00:26:35is most of the secrets that you can
- 00:26:37unlock only happen after you've already
- 00:26:39proven to steam that you make a lot of
- 00:26:41money like $100,000 within a month or
- 00:26:44something like hot that's when steam's
- 00:26:46like okay we're gonna give you all the
- 00:26:47keys to the kingdom you can do all this
- 00:26:49cool stuff before that steam doesn't
- 00:26:52give you much there isn't much
- 00:26:54visibility boost they give you before
- 00:26:56you reach that $100,000
- 00:26:59300,000 limit okay which I call real
- 00:27:02steam before real steam there's not a
- 00:27:04lot that they give you it's on your own
- 00:27:05buddy you are on your own to bring your
- 00:27:07own visibility except there's a couple
- 00:27:10widgets that they help you a little bit
- 00:27:12little bit it's not it's not going to
- 00:27:14make a break I mean it's not going to
- 00:27:15like make you a millionaire but it helps
- 00:27:18it's the tiniest little morsel that they
- 00:27:20give us poor Indies and that is popular
- 00:27:22upcoming widget new and trending widget
- 00:27:25Discovery queue and more like this which
- 00:27:28is this section at the bottom those are
- 00:27:30like the little tiny carrots they give
- 00:27:31us little baby Gamers and uh the way you
- 00:27:35get into popular upcoming it's like a
- 00:27:37ladder okay the very first rung that
- 00:27:39they baby give you is called Popular
- 00:27:42upcoming that's the first one and to get
- 00:27:45on there by launch you have to have
- 00:27:47around 7,000 I always do this because
- 00:27:49yes there's it's based off velocity and
- 00:27:52it's not just a pure number there's some
- 00:27:54other algorithm stuff in there but
- 00:27:56pretty much every game that gets 7,5
- 00:27:58,000 wish lists ends up in popular
- 00:28:00upcoming for some period of time okay
- 00:28:02and that's the first step of the ladder
- 00:28:04now there are Gams like Jake brette of
- 00:28:08great alien Gams who launched Regency
- 00:28:10soliter 2 actually didn't have enough
- 00:28:12wish list for popular upcoming but they
- 00:28:14were able to get into new and trending
- 00:28:16which is one rung up see you get into
- 00:28:18popular upcoming that gives you a lot of
- 00:28:20visibility and sales which boost you
- 00:28:21into new and trending which is the next
- 00:28:23rung see it's like step one step two and
- 00:28:25you're like starting to climb that
- 00:28:27visibility ladder Jake Brett's been
- 00:28:29around for like 15 years or more and so
- 00:28:31he could bypass the popular up coming
- 00:28:33and he just stepped on the next rung up
- 00:28:35which is new and trending that's very
- 00:28:36hard you have to be in there or your
- 00:28:37game has to be super hot so that's why I
- 00:28:40always say 7,000 that's the first rung
- 00:28:42now you could still fall off the ladder
- 00:28:43after that first rung and never get back
- 00:28:45up but you got to get at least hit for
- 00:28:46the first rung so that's why I say you
- 00:28:48got to get that 7,000 it's very after
- 00:28:50that if you don't hit that 7,000 it gets
- 00:28:52increasingly harder to climb the
- 00:28:54visibility ladders of steam and
- 00:28:56eventually get into real steam where you
- 00:28:58start selling it's a ladder and they
- 00:29:00give you little tiny steps in the
- 00:29:01beginning so you got to get on that
- 00:29:03ladder all
- 00:29:05right um let's see just making sure that
- 00:29:08all these that I'm still connected that
- 00:29:10the spiders are still weaving their silk
- 00:29:12okay um so just reminder staying inside
- 00:29:16conference um it's my conference every
- 00:29:18year um that I do after GDC where I pick
- 00:29:20the best talks and I say hey can you
- 00:29:23just tell my audience they can't go to

- 00:33:09of people have to do in the meta and
- 00:33:10this is what I talk about in this
- 00:33:11conference I actually talk about the
- 00:33:12Brain Change you have to make you are
- 00:33:14not marketing to one person you are
- 00:33:16marketing to steam to Market to people
- 00:33:18and that video Even though everybody
- 00:33:20clicks the X and closes the video you
- 00:33:23are doing that for the algorithm because
- 00:33:26when you opt into broadcasts
- 00:33:28they but on Steam nextfest you get to
- 00:33:31opt into two featured streams and what
- 00:33:33they do is they have a widget on the
- 00:33:34front page of
- 00:33:35steam that lists all the games that are
- 00:33:37broadcasting right now who have opted
- 00:33:39into one of those two slots have used
- 00:33:41their two slots and then you get right
- 00:33:42on the front page and it's not the video
- 00:33:44that does it it's that the steam put
- 00:33:45your video on the top that's that's it
- 00:33:48it's not the video that does it it's the
- 00:33:50fact that the algorithm puts you on the
- 00:33:53top you see it's nothing about the video
- 00:33:55it's not about one person it's about the
- 00:33:56collective algorithm that's the Brain
- 00:33:58Change we all need to make so uh the
- 00:34:00other thing is if you are really coming
- 00:34:02in hot thousands and thousands thousands
- 00:34:04of wish lists there's a widget on Steam
- 00:34:06front page that says popular streams and
- 00:34:10you want to get that again you get
- 00:34:12yourself featured in there when you're
- 00:34:13in that thing so that's why Kyle I it's
- 00:34:15not one person yes I always hate I
- 00:34:17always close it myself it's about the
- 00:34:20algorithm in the whole um are there
- 00:34:22steam festivals that are as valuable as
- 00:34:24nextfest for discoverability yeah here's
- 00:34:26the thing next Fest isn't actually the
- 00:34:29best
- 00:34:29Festival um there are other ones uh that
- 00:34:32are even better and they themed ones and
- 00:34:34go to how tomarket agame.com
- 00:34:36festivals it's our spreadsheet com
- 00:34:40compiled by the community and if you
- 00:34:41find a festival that's not on the sheet
- 00:34:43please message me in the Discord or go
- 00:34:47mods event- mods okay tell us please tag
- 00:34:52we don't read everything can't read
- 00:34:53every message you you folks are posting
- 00:34:55in there so be sure to tag at
- 00:34:58mods um we compile that thing some
- 00:35:01festivals if it's a smaller thing see
- 00:35:03the steam nextfest always has like a
- 00:35:05thousand games in it literally a
- 00:35:06thousand plus some of these smaller
- 00:35:09festivals like I don't know triple ey
- 00:35:11Festival that just happened they're not
- 00:35:13that many it's like a dozen two dozen
- 00:35:15games those can provide many more wish
- 00:35:17lists than steam nextfest it's just the
- 00:35:19thing that's magic About Steam nextfest
- 00:35:21is you know you're going to get into it
- 00:35:23you are definitely know the DAT it's
- 00:35:25going to happen because there's three
- 00:35:26per year you get to pick the date it's
- 00:35:28just seam nextfest is a bullet that you
- 00:35:31know you can fire whereas all the other
- 00:35:34festivals are a a lucky crapshoot you
- 00:35:37don't know if you're going to get
- 00:35:38because you apply the other festivals
- 00:35:41evaluate you are you good we also don't
- 00:35:43know if that Festival is going to get
- 00:35:45front page steam featuring the only
- 00:35:47reason we talk about steam nextfest so
- 00:35:48much is because it is a thing you know
- 00:35:51you have control over you get to pick
- 00:35:53the date that it happens when you do it
- 00:35:55you are guaranteed a spot the thing
- 00:35:58that's not guaranteed is where your
- 00:35:59placement is how much velocity you have
- 00:36:01going into the next Fest what you know
- 00:36:03what widgets you're going to have that's
- 00:36:04a that's a question we don't know what
- 00:36:05that is but the reason we always talk
- 00:36:06about cmx Fest is it's something you can
- 00:36:08control all the other festivals you
- 00:36:09can't control it's it's pure luck and
- 00:36:11dreams whether you get into it so that's
- 00:36:13why we talk about it okay are steam
- 00:36:16capsules with new update elements a good
- 00:36:19practice well
- 00:36:22um steam said no more of that because
- 00:36:27people are put so much on there and they
- 00:36:28released a blog post and said no more
- 00:36:30putting text in there that's anything
- 00:36:32other than new update um and uh but now
- 00:36:36people are still doing them still see
- 00:36:38them they'll be like nextfest build or
- 00:36:40something they basically said unless
- 00:36:42it's something like new content or
- 00:36:44version 2.0 that you can't put anything
- 00:36:46else there but people completely ignore
- 00:36:48that and I haven't heard anybody getting
- 00:36:49in trouble for that so they're like they
- 00:36:52didn't enforce their own thing on that
- 00:36:54so I think it helps who knows it's it's
- 00:36:57hard to tell but hey it's pretty easy
- 00:36:59use what's called artwork override in
- 00:37:01Steamworks you can specify hey I want
- 00:37:03this different capsule to show up for
- 00:37:05the next whatever period of time and it
- 00:37:07auto flips you back I think you should
- 00:37:09do it I I
- 00:37:10mean officially steam says do not do it
- 00:37:13don't do it but you probably can there's
- 00:37:16no no they're not going to yell at you
- 00:37:18if you do something weird all right I'm
- 00:37:20gonna switch over to some people who
- 00:37:22couldn't show up thank you so much for
- 00:37:23showing up we got about 20 minutes so
- 00:37:25pop your questions in there
- 00:37:27um okay for developer let's see use okay
- 00:37:31got that one are Tactic Games like XCOM
- 00:37:33a good genre for Indie developers to
- 00:37:35make okay this is
- 00:37:38tricky and we're always learning stuff
- 00:37:40so here's my theory I have seen a couple
- 00:37:44XCOM style games do down
- 00:37:46tactical not do well they underperformed
- 00:37:50they got a lot of wish list but they
- 00:37:52underperformed and I my theory my work
- 00:37:55in theory I haven't done it I want to
- 00:37:57work on a blog post about this my here's
- 00:37:59my working Theory I feel like XCOM style
- 00:38:02tactical strategy games which I love I
- 00:38:04played the original XCOM I played the
- 00:38:06the second generation XCOM I love those
- 00:38:08games they're kind of like dark souls in
- 00:38:11the fact that the audience is very very
- 00:38:15demanding they love the games they like
- 00:38:19to see them they wishlist them or you
- 00:38:21know are excited about him like that guy
- 00:38:23iron pineapple like if iron pineapple
- 00:38:25plays a Dark Souls like that game gets
- 00:38:28tons of wish lists and I think the same
- 00:38:30thing is with nextcom you can show a
- 00:38:31screenshot with a grid and like action
- 00:38:34points and all that stuff people will
- 00:38:35wishlist it but if the game is not 100%
- 00:38:41on point good strategy good AI good UI
- 00:38:45perfect the fans hate it so hard and
- 00:38:49they don't buy it the same thing with
- 00:38:50dark souls if the combat isn't precise
- 00:38:54to the level of Dark Souls if it is if
- 00:38:56it if the animations are kind of just a
- 00:38:57little off or it's a little laggy
- 00:39:00whatever it is about combat if it's not
- 00:39:03up to 100% dark souls standards they
- 00:39:05hate it and so I think that XCOM is an
- 00:39:10XCOM like game is good marketing wi like
- 00:39:14it's it's a genre that's in demand but
- 00:39:16it is very hard you have to have a lot
- 00:39:18of content the strategy and the AI has
- 00:39:20to be top tier and everything has to be
- 00:39:22hitting at 100% And if it's not hitting
- 00:39:24100% it fails so it's very risk reward
- 00:39:28in XCOM for a firsttime team I do not
- 00:39:31recommend it just based on you don't
- 00:39:33even understand how hard it is because
- 00:39:36you're first new blood so don't start
- 00:39:38with an XCOM game if it's your first
- 00:39:40game I've even seen veteran Studios
- 00:39:42making XCOM game and it didn't do well
- 00:39:45because of that high bar of quality that
- 00:39:49you have to meet so I don't really do
- 00:39:52that for first time in these how do I
- 00:39:55get invited to these non-public steam
- 00:39:57themed
- 00:39:58events how tomarket agame.com
- 00:40:01festivals they're put together by the
- 00:40:03community in other words like Community
- 00:40:05sees this and we're starting to get
- 00:40:06enough of a reputation that I'm getting
- 00:40:09contacted by organizers and say can you
- 00:40:11put this on your list yes I love that if
- 00:40:13you are an organizer of a festival
- 00:40:15please message me or put it in the
- 00:40:17events Channel upcoming events chat and
- 00:40:21do- events let us know if we think your
- 00:40:24Festival is legit and you're not just
- 00:40:26scamming people we will put on the list
- 00:40:28um there are some events I think I can
- 00:40:30never remember I think it's either
- 00:40:31wholesome snack or wholesome direct one
- 00:40:33of those two there is no thing there's
- 00:40:36no open application for these it's kind
- 00:40:38of just being a cool kid which I don't
- 00:40:41like I don't like how you just be a cool
- 00:40:43kid but basically what you do is I think
- 00:40:45one of those wholesome games snack or
- 00:40:48direct I can't remember which one they
- 00:40:49just look at Twitter it's some always
- 00:40:51Twitter it's now nowadays Tik Tok too
- 00:40:54and if you're a cool kid and they think
- 00:40:55your game's cool they're just like you
- 00:40:57want to be in a super cool kids
- 00:41:00festival and they just like message you
- 00:41:02on the down low and say do you want to
- 00:41:03be in there and you always say
- 00:41:05yes that's one of those where it's like
- 00:41:08there's no application form you just got
- 00:41:09to be a cool kid I don't like that I
- 00:41:11don't like that thing but it is a really
- 00:41:13good Festival so be a cool kid share
- 00:41:15your art share on that's one of the
- 00:41:18reasons why you share on social media
- 00:41:20Tik Tok Twitter not because it gives you
- 00:41:22a direct result it just gets you known
- 00:41:24by the cool kids that's that's
- 00:41:27unfortunately the way it works so um
- 00:41:29okay is it worth the effort to cold
- 00:41:31email streamers especially the bigger
- 00:41:33ones don't they usually find games on
- 00:41:34their own they do not and that is why
- 00:41:37speaking of cool kids
- 00:41:40Jenny who is influencer
- 00:41:43Outreach at Kepler interactive will
- 00:41:46teach us how to reach out to influencers
- 00:41:49how to email it's always backwards Jenny
- 00:41:53is this is a good one we're going to
- 00:41:55literally get the emails that she writes
- 00:41:58to streamers to get coverage we're going
- 00:42:00to do it that this is the question that
- 00:42:02she's going to answer how do I get
- 00:42:03streamers to cover my game how do I
- 00:42:04email them I'm gonna tell you well she's
- 00:42:06gonna tell you I'm gonna ask it and
- 00:42:08she's gonna tell you so definitely
- 00:42:10inside conference again you have 20
- 00:42:12minutes to book it no you do not you
- 00:42:15have like what like 12 minutes to book
- 00:42:18it 12 minutes after this the price goes
- 00:42:21up by another five bucks and you don't
- 00:42:24get the Free Conference I'm I'm you have
- 00:42:26to buy this hour otherwise you don't get
- 00:42:28the good stuff so definitely come on
- 00:42:29it's going to be fun it's going to be so
- 00:42:31fun it's like GDC but you don't have to
- 00:42:33like you know be in San Francisco all
- 00:42:37right steam next Fest ends June 17th in
- 00:42:41sumers sale starts June 27th is it
- 00:42:43dangerous to launch June 18th right
- 00:42:45after my game c somebody asked a
- 00:42:47question they wanna they want to do it I
- 00:42:50don't based on the number of people who
- 00:42:52ask me this makes me think that
- 00:42:54everybody's thinking the same thing and
- 00:42:55it's just going to crowd everybody else
- 00:42:58out I I just look at steamdb see how
- 00:43:01many games are launching at that week I
- 00:43:03have a feeling it's going to be a very
- 00:43:04busy week and you don't want to be in a
- 00:43:05busy week I would I think the better
- 00:43:08strategy is launch during a triaa game
- 00:43:10and we're GNA talk about that in my talk
- 00:43:13about why you should actually launch
- 00:43:15during a triaa game if you want to know
- 00:43:16the answer a little bit early just
- 00:43:18search my blog for uh chil quarium okay
- 00:43:22I think it's better to launch during a
- 00:43:24period where there's not much traffic
- 00:43:26when there aren't many games launching
- 00:43:27which is usually during a AA launch
- 00:43:29we'll get into that and I'll give you
- 00:43:31the argument for that but that's my
- 00:43:32better thought
- 00:43:34um also I think Indie spent a little too
- 00:43:37long thinking about when they should
- 00:43:38launch and not enough about what genres
- 00:43:39to pick but that's just another Bugaboo
- 00:43:42that I got all right so okay the steam
- 00:43:45nextfest docs pages are a little
- 00:43:47confusing me do you really have to sign
- 00:43:48up like four months in advance or am I
- 00:43:50misunderstand the timeline look at the
- 00:43:51June nextfest it says registration
- 00:43:53deadlines is in February but February's
- 00:43:54already passed yep uh Steam nextfest the
- 00:43:57applications are way early way early
- 00:44:02so um for all of you I don't know if the
- 00:44:05specific uh person Ian I don't know your
- 00:44:08situation Ian but this is why I always
- 00:44:10say do the last nextfest before you
- 00:44:12launch now I know four months some
- 00:44:14Indies don't know four months in advance
- 00:44:15if they're going to launch you first you
- 00:44:18can always opt out so if you know maybe
- 00:44:22we're going to launch opt into the next
- 00:44:23one it's a little late now so after June
- 00:44:26next Fest
- 00:44:27they're going to immediately have the
- 00:44:28applications for October just opt into
- 00:44:30it if you think if you maybe think this
- 00:44:33just going to happen opt in you can
- 00:44:35always drop out within like two weeks
- 00:44:36before the next Fest starts you can
- 00:44:39always drop out okay there's no penalty
- 00:44:41they don't hate you if you drop out they
- 00:44:42don't so opt in to the one that you
- 00:44:45think maybe is going to happen two you
- 00:44:47might Ian go to support there's a
- 00:44:50support tab in Steamworks find it just
- 00:44:52submit a support ticket and say hey four
- 00:44:54months is way too early I didn't know
- 00:44:57can I get into the summer nextfest I'm
- 00:44:58ready to go everything's good and you
- 00:45:00better be ready because if you make them
- 00:45:02do this and then you're like nah I'm not
- 00:45:03going to do I decide not to June well
- 00:45:05what the hell that wasn't very nice so
- 00:45:09make sure you definitely try and open a
- 00:45:10support tickets sometimes they can let
- 00:45:11you in but for the most part for folks
- 00:45:13that aren't in if you think you might be
- 00:45:17in the nextfest just apply you can
- 00:45:18always drop out there's no penalty for
- 00:45:20dropping out um as long as it's like a
- 00:45:22month in advance
- 00:45:24okay for new horror games demo release
- 00:45:27is it better to join the October next
- 00:45:28Fest or Halloween Fest Can I submit to
- 00:45:30both you can there's um the only thing
- 00:45:34is there's only one next Fest that's the
- 00:45:36only role only one next Fest but the all
- 00:45:37the other ones you you can do either one
- 00:45:39so I think both are good um assuming
- 00:45:41that that's the next Fest that you want
- 00:45:43to do okay horror promo question in all
- 00:45:47caps uh do horror video games have to
- 00:45:50follow a different marketing path or do
- 00:45:51we have the same like demos Centra
- 00:45:54here's the one thing that horror has
- 00:45:55that the other ones don't you can do
- 00:45:57whatever you want um but with horror um
- 00:46:00the magic thing about horror games is
- 00:46:02their trailers and their media the like
- 00:46:05social media Tik Tok can go viral like
- 00:46:07nothing else that's why I think every
- 00:46:10Indie developer should make at least one
- 00:46:11horror game even if you don't like
- 00:46:12horror make a legit horror game not like
- 00:46:15oh it's a deck builder horror game it's
- 00:46:17a it's an XCOM mixed with horror mixed
- 00:46:19with a dating Sim no just make a
- 00:46:20freaking horror game where a monster
- 00:46:22chases you just make a legit horror game
- 00:46:23okay the cool thing about legit horror
- 00:46:26games like straight up horror games is
- 00:46:28you can just go viral with like a
- 00:46:31trailer or just like a gift of a monster
- 00:46:34usually it's a girl who's entirely white
- 00:46:36wearing a white dress just screaming at
- 00:46:38you you can go viral with that which is
- 00:46:41amazing like look at don't scream they
- 00:46:43had a girl in a white dress she walks
- 00:46:45backwards on her hands screams at you
- 00:46:49that went viral got 100,000 wish list
- 00:46:50okay so you can go viral with a so with
- 00:46:53a horror game so what I say is go really
- 00:46:56hard the first that you're announcing
- 00:46:57your horror game Tik Tok YouTube all
- 00:47:00that stuff have a girl in a white dress
- 00:47:01scream at you and just say this is a
- 00:47:04horror game you can go viral with that
- 00:47:07if you do that you probably don't need a
- 00:47:09demo because it's so hot now you might
- 00:47:11do a quick demo for next test but horror
- 00:47:14games are one of the few genres that can
- 00:47:16get away with just being social media
- 00:47:18YouTube t Tik Tok viral and then
- 00:47:21launching into a successful thing again
- 00:47:23look at don't scream they did this very
- 00:47:24similar no demo no nothing but if you
- 00:47:28try your hardest that first month you
- 00:47:30try and go viral and you do not go
- 00:47:33viral then you have to do the demo
- 00:47:35because that's your next best shot and
- 00:47:37actually that's what I'm going to talk
- 00:47:38about in my talk is how to use the new
- 00:47:41meta of steam which is a lot about this
- 00:47:43I'll be talking about that on I think
- 00:47:45the new meta is Monday the very first
- 00:47:47talk on Monday at 12:30 Pacific time I'm
- 00:47:50going to be talking about the new meta
- 00:47:51and how to do this stuff so that's what
- 00:47:53my talk is so be sure to book it you

- 00:48:02took place in two the next Fest two
- 00:48:05years ago and when the game was at its
- 00:48:06first stage now our game looks totally
- 00:48:07different is there a chance to join
- 00:48:09nextfest there is not there is not I'm
- 00:48:12sorry I'm so sorry you only do one
- 00:48:14nextfest and they're very mean about it
- 00:48:17that's why I say do the last nextfest
- 00:48:18before you launch for this very reason
- 00:48:20sometimes your game changes the looks
- 00:48:21change that sort of thing that's just
- 00:48:23the way it goes so you cannot I am sorry
- 00:48:26um there's nothing you can do I have a
- 00:48:293D game in the works and both a action
- 00:48:32adventure and platforming element should
- 00:48:34I advertise one more than the other I
- 00:48:37don't know that you have to find out by
- 00:48:39testing it so one month say this is an
- 00:48:41action adventure game and then the next
- 00:48:44month say this is a platformer see which
- 00:48:46one gets you more attaction which one
- 00:48:47people respond to which one people like
- 00:48:49better but here's the thing those genres
- 00:48:51actually aren't that different action
- 00:48:53adventurers platformer um the the
- 00:48:55question comes more when it's like oh
- 00:48:57this is a um dating Sim combined with a
- 00:49:01card combat game then then it's like oh
- 00:49:04is it this but action adventure platform
- 00:49:05are very similar actually uh so I I
- 00:49:08think you just say action adventure
- 00:49:09platformer I don't think it's that I
- 00:49:11don't think it's that different um but
- 00:49:13anyway um you just never know that's why
- 00:49:15again I say do nextfest at the end
- 00:49:17because you've dialed in your marketing
- 00:49:18you found out what actually response to
- 00:49:21the audience what you can do stuff like
- 00:49:22run ads and not for the purpose of like
- 00:49:25oh do my ads convert just see
- 00:49:27which ad gets the best conversion say
- 00:49:29this is an action adventure game and
- 00:49:30then do a different ad that says this is
- 00:49:31a platformer see which one gets more
- 00:49:33clicks whichever one it is that's
- 00:49:34probably the one you should advertise as
- 00:49:36I don't know you've got to test it all
- 00:49:38these games we never know we just test
- 00:49:41it and see which one gets the best
- 00:49:42reaction reach out to streamers say this
- 00:49:43is an action adventure game reach out to
- 00:49:45more streamers this is a platformer
- 00:49:46which one gets more traction with plat
- 00:49:48with streamers that's what you got to
- 00:49:49figure out we never know these things
- 00:49:51games are magic they just we never
- 00:49:54know um I have a 3D game in the works
- 00:49:58with both oh that's one same one thank
- 00:50:00you Daniel for your question uh do you
- 00:50:02think steam has changed something
- 00:50:03regarding their visibility I it's just
- 00:50:05that I've been noticing games releasing
- 00:50:07recently with tens of thousands of wish
- 00:50:08list from Big Publishers like devolver
- 00:50:10example pepper grinder and Children Of
- 00:50:11The Sun not having as many views in the
- 00:50:13first week um I think this is actually
- 00:50:16like so the case is so folks playing at
- 00:50:18home um pepper grinder is a 2d
- 00:50:21platformer grinder uh where it's like
- 00:50:23you got a grinding thing launched by
- 00:50:24devolver didn't get it didn't do very
- 00:50:26well then another one was this other
- 00:50:28game called what was it called um
- 00:50:30Children Of The Sun not doing as well
- 00:50:32here's the thing there's nothing wrong
- 00:50:34with the visity um look at both of those
- 00:50:37games pepper grinder is a platformer
- 00:50:38pixel art platformer pepper grinder is a
- 00:50:40puzzle game masing is a shooter but it's
- 00:50:43actually a puzzle game those are nothing
- 00:50:45has changed those genres are not great
- 00:50:47for steam they're just not they're not
- 00:50:49the steam genre like I feel for those
- 00:50:51developers I liked both those games they
- 00:50:53looked really cool but the steam
- 00:50:55audience does not like like here's my
- 00:50:57general this is my hot take which I'm
- 00:51:00kind of coming if you are controlling
- 00:51:01the main character like if I push up on
- 00:51:03the stick and the player goes forward
- 00:51:05that is risky it is very risky to make a
- 00:51:08game where you control the main
- 00:51:09character the games that steam likes you
- 00:51:12are actually
- 00:51:13controlling The Meta you are like like a
- 00:51:16city Builder you you're controlling a
- 00:51:17cursor a cursor that goes around and
- 00:51:19says place a building here place a
- 00:51:20building here or a strategy gamer it's
- 00:51:21like move the units to here and your
- 00:51:23cursor if you are an indie game it is
- 00:51:26best the the in general the best success
- 00:51:29comes when you control a cursor not the
- 00:51:32main character it's it's like there both
- 00:51:34of those games are controlling the main
- 00:51:36character and for a long time those
- 00:51:39games have not done as well where you
- 00:51:41control the main character it's just for
- 00:51:43some reason Indies never take that
- 00:51:45message and it's now that we look at
- 00:51:47these games much harder um we start to
- 00:51:50realize this and social sharing that
- 00:51:52stuff it's just we notice it more but
- 00:51:53for the longest time this has been the
- 00:51:55case and this is what I've been telling
- 00:51:57stop making those Platformers because
- 00:51:58they just don't do as well as games
- 00:52:00where you control the cursor where
- 00:52:01you're like upgrading stuff crafting
- 00:52:03things building things those are the
- 00:52:05types of games that steam likes steam
- 00:52:07likes games where you're a cursor
- 00:52:09so okay we got two minutes left after
- 00:52:13this I'm killing the coupon so this
- 00:52:15basically the last warning conference
- 00:52:17starts Monday at 12:30 Pacific time when
