- 00:00:00hello and welcome to a new episode of
- 00:00:03our podcast culture C where we talk
- 00:00:05about experiences of people leaving and
- 00:00:08loving abroad honey what is the topic
- 00:00:10for today you will love today's topic
- 00:00:13because we're talking about
- 00:00:15food the only thing that I love as much
- 00:00:17as German boyfriend let's
- 00:00:20go so just to give you some some
- 00:00:24background information like we are both
- 00:00:25coming from two different cultural
- 00:00:28backgrounds I'm from Germany she's from
- 00:00:31Vietnam and we have very different food
- 00:00:33culture yeah definitely our food culture
- 00:00:35is a bit better than his food culture
- 00:00:38so that is an opinion and we also we
- 00:00:41both travel a lot together as well and
- 00:00:44we both eat a lot of uh I mean at least
- 00:00:46for me I love eating food in different
- 00:00:48places so um yeah every time when we're
- 00:00:51traveling basically that's all we are
- 00:00:53doing that is literally the only thing I
- 00:00:55care about when traveling I just need to
- 00:00:57eat um so yeah I do have a lot of
- 00:01:00opinion when it comes to food anyway can
- 00:01:03you name me like um top three countries
- 00:01:06in your list that have the best food
- 00:01:08before we get deep into this topic today
- 00:01:10I would go for Italy Thailand Japan H I
- 00:01:15would go for Thailand
- 00:01:17Vietnam and uh Vietnam really that's a
- 00:01:21very unpopular opin although I'm
- 00:01:23vietnames I think Tha food is a little
- 00:01:25bit better I don't know like I don't
- 00:01:27freaking know how they do stuff there in
- 00:01:29Thailand or maybe just because like I'm
- 00:01:31used to my food and I was shocked to
- 00:01:33know that there is another country that
- 00:01:35make food as good as us and Mexican food
- 00:01:40I love burrito is that from Mexico yeah
- 00:01:42see Mexican food's good that's my top
- 00:01:45three h okay just not sure if you ever
- 00:01:49ate authentic Mexican food well as long
- 00:01:53as it's as good as what I ate so far I
- 00:01:55will be happy with it you guys send us a
- 00:01:57lot of interesting comments again all on
- 00:02:00food this time if you want to submit us
- 00:02:02a story you can do that on culture
- 00:02:03cut.com we also received some questions
- 00:02:06this time our first question comes from
- 00:02:08Nicholas and he asks what was 's first
- 00:02:12impression of German
- 00:02:15food I came here 5 years ago and uh when
- 00:02:19I first came here I did not like German
- 00:02:21food I think it's too heavy too meat
- 00:02:24base and um like a vegetable after 5
- 00:02:28years I still don't like German food in
- 00:02:30general um in my diet now I have German
- 00:02:34food once per month whenever German
- 00:02:36boyfriend bring me to a beer garden and
- 00:02:38we have
- 00:02:40schnitzel I don't know like like our
- 00:02:43Vietnamese food and German food is just
- 00:02:45so different there is literally nothing
- 00:02:47in between like no compromise at all so
- 00:02:50not much coming ground yeah it's really
- 00:02:52it's really hard to switch from one to
- 00:02:54another and uh I couldn't find anything
- 00:02:57that could have like a fusion between
- 00:02:59these two foood so I'm just stick with
- 00:03:00my venam
- 00:03:03food yeah you really tried hard in the
- 00:03:05beginning to um yeah adapt a little bit
- 00:03:09and Tred to eat bread in the morning we
- 00:03:12also found out like what kind of bread
- 00:03:13she likes and sometimes she eats it she
- 00:03:16really likes bretzel with butter
- 00:03:18although like in the like when she eats
- 00:03:20bretzel with butter it's more like
- 00:03:22butter butter with bradel like she's
- 00:03:25really cutting the butter into bars and
- 00:03:27placing it on the bretzel but like yeah
- 00:03:31I mean at one point she just realized
- 00:03:33that like also her digestion was not
- 00:03:35really working with that I had to go to
- 00:03:37the hospital for that oh not the
- 00:03:39hospital I had to go to the doctor for
- 00:03:40that I get all kind of check up because
- 00:03:43my stomach keep hurting for like six
- 00:03:45months after I moved to Germany cuz I
- 00:03:47was trying to be adventurous and like
- 00:03:49trying new food which did not work out
- 00:03:52at all and and at the end it just turned
- 00:03:54out that it was just like stress because
- 00:03:56of exams at University and like uh
- 00:04:00uncommon food together like they really
- 00:04:02did a lot of checks also allergies and
- 00:04:05stuff but like yeah that's also
- 00:04:07something that some people should
- 00:04:09realize when they're just saying like
- 00:04:11open yourself up and stuff I mean of
- 00:04:13course you can eat a little bit but like
- 00:04:15you cannot just change your whole whole
- 00:04:18diet that you had for your whole whole
- 00:04:21life completely but I know that there
- 00:04:24are also German dishes that you really
- 00:04:26like like oh I like d noodle it's
- 00:04:31basically like a steam bun and then you
- 00:04:34dip them with vanilla sauce I could eat
- 00:04:37it or potato soup yeah it was okay it's
- 00:04:40not like a daily food but uh I like it
- 00:04:43from time to time honey what is your
- 00:04:45impression of Vietnamese food when you
- 00:04:46first come to Vietnam I was very
- 00:04:50interested in finding out like about
- 00:04:53that food but I was traveling alone and
- 00:04:55I was traveling on a budget so most of
- 00:04:57the time I ended up with eating fried
- 00:05:00rice or fried noodles the man was so
- 00:05:02broke he has no money at all I was
- 00:05:06there was it was crazy could allord like
- 00:05:10those uh did did you eat like B me at
- 00:05:12least those Vietnamese sandwiches yeah I
- 00:05:15also ate bang me but I don't like the
- 00:05:17liver paste that they put in there and
- 00:05:19you know that I cannot eat coriander and
- 00:05:21whenever I told like you need to imagine
- 00:05:24that like that is Vietnamese fast food
- 00:05:26there's old lady standing at the side of
- 00:05:28the road with a car and she's selling
- 00:05:30the bang meat it's a sandwich and it's
- 00:05:33really a nice sandwich and then she puts
- 00:05:35tons of stuff on it and one of the
- 00:05:37things is coriander that she puts on it
- 00:05:39and I cannot eat coriander it tastes
- 00:05:41like soap it tastes bad for me
- 00:05:43everything in Vietnam has coriander I
- 00:05:45know I know that is part of the problem
- 00:05:47I guess just like she hates parsley and
- 00:05:50everything in Germany has parsley in it
- 00:05:52and whenever I told that that old lady
- 00:05:54that I don't want to have the coriander
- 00:05:56in it it looked like something in her di
- 00:05:59or I'm insulting all of her ancestors or
- 00:06:02something yeah but I really like the
- 00:06:04buang me and it's like very cheap you
- 00:06:05pay like1 for for one giant giant
- 00:06:08sandwich yeah not anymore honey it was
- 00:06:11five years ago Vietnam is not that cheap
- 00:06:13anymore inflation yeah but um but bang
- 00:06:17me is the best thing in the world it's
- 00:06:19like the best sandwich ever so freaking
- 00:06:21flavorful and you cannot make that that
- 00:06:24easy that's why you cannot really find
- 00:06:25real authentic bang me oversea very very
- 00:06:28rare restaurant could make it for
- 00:06:30everybody is doing it everywhere left
- 00:06:31and right but bang me is not that easy I
- 00:06:34don't know why I mean there are also
- 00:06:35people offering bang me but like it's
- 00:06:38not very good so there's some exceptions
- 00:06:41of course I feel like if you ever visit
- 00:06:43Vietnam you better save like at least
- 00:06:44some money so that you could afford like
- 00:06:46food in Vietnam otherwise it's Such a
- 00:06:48Pity because Vietnamese food is just so
- 00:06:50cheap and so yummy if you go there and
- 00:06:54you don't like when I was traveling with
- 00:06:56German boyfriend I was also super broke
- 00:06:58so basically I could eat much the thing
- 00:07:00that I want to eat as well I was
- 00:07:02basically eating he was eating um fried
- 00:07:05rice and I was eating fried vegetable
- 00:07:07all the time but uh now that we have
- 00:07:11more money compared to the old times
- 00:07:13whenever we travel especially to country
- 00:07:15that I like to eat the food like Vietnam
- 00:07:17we were eating from the morning until
- 00:07:20the afternoon the evening every 1 hour
- 00:07:23you see me sipping on something or
- 00:07:25eating something and I couldn't even sta
- 00:07:27it was so nice knowing that I could
- 00:07:29afford the food and I could eat all of
- 00:07:32these food the thing is like for me it
- 00:07:35would be fine to just have one time per
- 00:07:38day doing it like that like and then
- 00:07:41have the rest of the day for traveling
- 00:07:43this is why I didn't feel so bad when I
- 00:07:45was traveling there on the budget and
- 00:07:47just had my fried rice all the time
- 00:07:48because it was cheap it was yummy it was
- 00:07:50making me fool and then I had just time
- 00:07:53for exploring and in Vietnam there's
- 00:07:56tons of stuff to explore like okay just
- 00:07:59like yeah you like exploring food I like
- 00:08:02to explore other things yeah I just said
- 00:08:05that we cannot do the same thing
- 00:08:06together so sometime we have to split so
- 00:08:09I can eat and he can walk around Under
- 00:08:11the Sun and get sunstroke later but it's
- 00:08:14I think it's very healthy to to yeah see
- 00:08:17what each other wants and not forcing
- 00:08:20the other one to to do what you want I
- 00:08:24think this is where trouble starts
- 00:08:26especially on holiday next question
- 00:08:28comes from boo boo how do two people
- 00:08:31with different food choices live
- 00:08:33together well I truly believe that food
- 00:08:37could make or break a marriage honestly
- 00:08:41along with other stuff food is possibly
- 00:08:44top three up there somewhere if you're
- 00:08:46not compatible when it comes to food it
- 00:08:48could lead to a lot of argument and
- 00:08:50dissatisfaction in life me and German
- 00:08:53ban is not compatible at all when it
- 00:08:55comes to food but we have come to a
- 00:08:58solution most of the time we don't eat
- 00:09:00together we eat separate food if we can
- 00:09:03make it we try to sit together and then
- 00:09:05each of us eat our own food and sometime
- 00:09:09if there's something like pizza or pasta
- 00:09:12sometime I would eat it then we could
- 00:09:14share together it's not ideal because I
- 00:09:17feel that if you cook together and you
- 00:09:19sit down and eat together at the same
- 00:09:21time they are more of a family Vibe
- 00:09:24going around my family did that but well
- 00:09:28at least now both of us are happy with
- 00:09:30what we eat and the thing is I don't
- 00:09:31plan to cook for German boyfriend as a
- 00:09:33wife anyway so in Vietnam my mom cooked
- 00:09:36for the whole family and so everybody
- 00:09:38just wait for her to finish food and
- 00:09:40then just sit down and eat most of the
- 00:09:42time over here I wouldn't plan to cook
- 00:09:44for German boyfriend three meals per day
- 00:09:46so he cook his own meal I cook my own
- 00:09:49meal and uh we sometime sit out to eat
- 00:09:53together as I said yeah the thing is I
- 00:09:57mean I think you just need to arrange
- 00:09:59yourself about that the thing is I also
- 00:10:02have like weird eating times like I eat
- 00:10:04in the morning before I go to work and
- 00:10:07then I eat like sometime in the
- 00:10:09afternoon but before the evening but
- 00:10:11yeah just having two meals basically
- 00:10:14every day and I eat whenever I feel
- 00:10:16hungry and eats every 2 hours like
- 00:10:19seriously the thing is if I'm hungry and
- 00:10:22I have to wait for German boyfriend to
- 00:10:24finish his meal I'm going to eat him
- 00:10:25like after when he finish his meal he
- 00:10:27lose a arm already and and I were just
- 00:10:29sitting there numing his arm so uh he
- 00:10:33just gave up on that and um it works out
- 00:10:36somehow it's not the best situation but
- 00:10:38we're compromising let's start with the
- 00:10:40first story Vanessa send us this story
- 00:10:44my boyfriend and I have different ideas
- 00:10:46of what makes a good dinner he loves big
- 00:10:49hot meals and I would prefer something
- 00:10:52simple like a sandwich or cereals this
- 00:10:55is partly because he tends to eat one
- 00:10:58meal meal a day and I eat several meals
- 00:11:02throughout the day who eats one meal per
- 00:11:04day so he he woke up in the morning and
- 00:11:07then he didn't eat anything until the
- 00:11:08afternoon one meal really sounds extreme
- 00:11:11I mean I I told you before that I'm just
- 00:11:14eating two meals per day but like
- 00:11:16one but sometimes I actually can relate
- 00:11:19because
- 00:11:20sometimes got me into eating warm stuff
- 00:11:24sometimes in the morning so when we have
- 00:11:26leftovers then I heat it up in the
- 00:11:29microwave sometimes in the morning and
- 00:11:30then I actually realize that it makes me
- 00:11:32fool like a lot for like most of the day
- 00:11:35and sometimes I even feel like okay I
- 00:11:38wouldn't need to eat anything else that
- 00:11:41day anymore so maybe for some people
- 00:11:43that might work that is a crazy thought
- 00:11:45I would never thought of I have never
- 00:11:47ever wake up eat something and feel full
- 00:11:50and I thought okay I don't need to eat
- 00:11:52anything until the evening even if I'm
- 00:11:54full I would be like okay have to do
- 00:11:56something so that I'm hungry for my next
- 00:11:58meal wi is in 2 hours what are you doing
- 00:12:01then for getting hungry well I don't
- 00:12:04know but my point is that I have this
- 00:12:07myet that there has to be at least three
- 00:12:09meal per day and I have to like commit
- 00:12:11to that goal I have never not eat three
- 00:12:13meals per day I eat more than that every
- 00:12:16day okay sorry please keep going with
- 00:12:18the story well sometimes it I also feel
- 00:12:20like it it comes from what U eats like
- 00:12:23when she's just having like a a green
- 00:12:26vegetable and then she boils it and then
- 00:12:28she eats it with fish sauce and some
- 00:12:29rice I mean that is not making a food
- 00:12:31for a long time guys I never thought of
- 00:12:33it before I came here because when I was
- 00:12:35in Vietnam I never thought of nutrient
- 00:12:37and stuff like that I just thought okay
- 00:12:39this is yummy and then we eat it and
- 00:12:41that's everything I thought about but
- 00:12:43after I moved to Germany and uh I don't
- 00:12:46have anyone who cook for me anymore I
- 00:12:48when I was in Vietnam mostly I eat out
- 00:12:50because it's pretty cheap and I have to
- 00:12:51learn how to cook I love eating Bo
- 00:12:54vegetable and I eat them all the time
- 00:12:56but I realized that after 1 hour I'm
- 00:12:58hungry again I didn't get it because I I
- 00:13:00sometime I would it like a giant bowl of
- 00:13:02vegetable and I finally learned that 80%
- 00:13:06of them are just water oh like oh my God
- 00:13:10water and fiber basically basically like
- 00:13:1399% of them sometime are just water I
- 00:13:15was just drinking water with some like
- 00:13:18nutrient all the time and I didn't know
- 00:13:21that until I'm getting until some years
- 00:13:23later and turned out beans are not water
- 00:13:26and I hate
- 00:13:27beans uh trying to eat more beans now to
- 00:13:30add more stuff in Vanessa kept saying to
- 00:13:33compromise I just eat a little of
- 00:13:35whatever he wants usually a pasta or
- 00:13:38rice dish our plates look hilarious next
- 00:13:41to each other one piled high and one
- 00:13:44with a tiny amount do you compromise or
- 00:13:46eat separately a I think we just
- 00:13:49answered that question before already
- 00:13:50but I find it's very sweet that she
- 00:13:52actually sit down and eat a little bit
- 00:13:54with him actually it's pretty much what
- 00:13:56you're doing too right well I just sit
- 00:13:58down because I see food and I want to
- 00:14:00like try it out yeah but like it's it's
- 00:14:03most of the time like for example we're
- 00:14:05having friends over and then we're
- 00:14:06ordering pizza together or something and
- 00:14:09then uan is like oh yeah yeah I also
- 00:14:11order a pizza and then we ordered a
- 00:14:14pizza and then she disappears to the
- 00:14:16kitchen and starts
- 00:14:17cooking and Everyone is always
- 00:14:20completely confused about that but like
- 00:14:23yeah then she's having like three bites
- 00:14:25of pizza and eats her boiled vegetable
- 00:14:28along with it
- 00:14:29and and she has that character phrase
- 00:14:31like I just eat a little bit Yeah I eat
- 00:14:34a little bit I just want to be included
- 00:14:37to that's the whole thing funny enough
- 00:14:39we already answer most of that beginning
- 00:14:42at the beginning before we even know the
- 00:14:44story but we really see ourselves in
- 00:14:46that right I don't eat one meal per day
- 00:14:48who is that person that's more like me
- 00:14:51and like you don't German Bend don't eat
- 00:14:53after 6 so I I eat until in a perfect
- 00:14:57world I would talking about time eating
- 00:15:00in Germany people would eat breakfast at
- 00:15:02what 6:00 in the morning 7 in the
- 00:15:05morning like on a on a work day or a
- 00:15:08weekend in a work day for example work
- 00:15:11day I guess like depending on when
- 00:15:13they're getting up I feel like German
- 00:15:16got up crazily early crazy like German
- 00:15:20boyfriend got up 1 hour before he has to
- 00:15:22leave the house so that he have enough
- 00:15:23time to have breakfast sit down drink
- 00:15:26coffee watch a movie or something like
- 00:15:28that
- 00:15:29if I had to leave the house I would get
- 00:15:31up 15 minutes maximum I get up I brush
- 00:15:34my teeth and I grab my stuff and I go I
- 00:15:36have to sleep as much as possible I also
- 00:15:39brushed my teeth by the way you didn't
- 00:15:41mention that yeah um and then lunch what
- 00:15:44time do you guys have
- 00:15:46lunch like around 12 or 1 okay 12:30
- 00:15:52yeah
- 00:15:53dinner uh in the evening at 6:00 like
- 00:15:56when I was growing up it was classic
- 00:15:58classical 6 oh the thing is German
- 00:16:01boyfriend don't have dinner so his uh
- 00:16:03eating time is a bit messed up I think
- 00:16:05he eat the first meal at 6 and then the
- 00:16:07second meal at 4 or something um for my
- 00:16:11eating time it's like I woke up at 9 and
- 00:16:15then I eat my first brunch at 10 I have
- 00:16:18to so it's like a big meal and then I
- 00:16:21would be hungry until 6 and then I would
- 00:16:24eat again and then I eat something at 9
- 00:16:26to 10: in the evening which is really
- 00:16:28bad I really try to stop that habit but
- 00:16:32the problem when I was in Vietnam I work
- 00:16:34shift so I always go home at 10 and then
- 00:16:37I still have to cook and eat so I always
- 00:16:39eat at 11: and I couldn't St with that
- 00:16:42habit I heard that in Spain people eat
- 00:16:44dinner at 11 or something I that's what
- 00:16:47I heard I'm not Spanish so I don't
- 00:16:50really know but I mean maybe someone can
- 00:16:53I'm pretty sure we have Spanish people
- 00:16:54out there who could write that in the
- 00:16:57comments I I think eating a little bit
- 00:16:59later because they want to avoid the
- 00:17:01heat I mean the heat I was in Spain it
- 00:17:04was not that hot like in Vietnam and
- 00:17:06Vietnam Vietnam people do eat like
- 00:17:12normally the next story is from meow
- 00:17:15meow I'm a
- 00:17:19cow okay I don't know in which country
- 00:17:23meow meow is the sound of a cow but okay
- 00:17:27differences in food were the biggest
- 00:17:29culture shocks for the both of us one of
- 00:17:32them being that Dutch people generally
- 00:17:35eat light cold lunches like sandwiches
- 00:17:39and salads me as a
- 00:17:41Filipino have warm meals breakfast lunch
- 00:17:45and
- 00:17:46dinner one day early on our first months
- 00:17:51of living together my boyfriend took a
- 00:17:53packet of seasoned fried pork strips
- 00:17:56from the fridge stuffed his bread with
- 00:17:58it and proceeded to eat it cold no sauce
- 00:18:02no toasting no warming
- 00:18:06up this is really funny because if you
- 00:18:09live in countries like Vietnam and you
- 00:18:11have never go to a Western Country you
- 00:18:13could never fathom what just
- 00:18:16happened um like in my country we never
- 00:18:19eat Co milal ever okay we um eat salad
- 00:18:24but then it goes with other hot warm
- 00:18:27dishes as well in my in our uh diet as
- 00:18:31well so um for me it was a really big
- 00:18:34shock to when I go to Germany and people
- 00:18:36just have cold sandwiches but after a
- 00:18:39while I come to an understanding that
- 00:18:42it's quick and also it's very efficient
- 00:18:44if you bring them to school or go to
- 00:18:46work because when I was working in
- 00:18:48Vietnam I have to bring my own lunch
- 00:18:50which mean I have to wake up pretty
- 00:18:52early and then I have to start cooking
- 00:18:54my lunch hot like swm like super hot
- 00:18:58soup hot chicken hot meat and hot egg
- 00:19:01and everything and then I have to sit
- 00:19:03there and wait until all of the dishes
- 00:19:05are cold because if it's hot and then
- 00:19:07you like immediately box them they turn
- 00:19:09super bad super quickly and then I bring
- 00:19:12them to work and then I have to have a
- 00:19:14microware so I can uh hit them up again
- 00:19:18and that is the only thing I could I
- 00:19:20don't have any other choice like what
- 00:19:21else do I have I only know how to make
- 00:19:24warm food I have never eat cold food
- 00:19:26before but for German you guys guys just
- 00:19:29need to slap a piece of bread cheese
- 00:19:31sandwiches a bit of like tomato together
- 00:19:35and then you bring them to work and it
- 00:19:37could last for a day or two and it's not
- 00:19:39going to turn bad super quick and safe
- 00:19:41time too I mean like as you describe it
- 00:19:43like you can make a sandwich like pretty
- 00:19:46interesting with a lot of different
- 00:19:47toppings you can put something sour
- 00:19:49something fresh something crunchy no but
- 00:19:53it's still a sandwich honey it's still a
- 00:19:55sandwich still a sandwich yeah don't get
- 00:19:58me wrong there's also a lot of bad
- 00:20:00sandwiches out there that like of course
- 00:20:02when you eat them they don't taste very
- 00:20:04good at all but like when you prepare
- 00:20:06one like when I was a kid actually and
- 00:20:08we went to a day trip I always liked in
- 00:20:11the morning to prepare like my my
- 00:20:13sandwich for that and then I was like oh
- 00:20:15yeah and I put like salad there I put
- 00:20:17that there and then I pack it and then I
- 00:20:20cut some some veggies too that I can eat
- 00:20:22along with it and maybe bring some small
- 00:20:25baby cheeses and know the thing is honey
- 00:20:28for you guys sandwich is like a whole
- 00:20:30range of food with different thing
- 00:20:32inside for us sandwich is just
- 00:20:34sandwiches and we have different kind of
- 00:20:36food that is completely different with
- 00:20:38sandwiches to choose for a day but for
- 00:20:41you guys it's like oh what sandwich what
- 00:20:42kind of sandwiches should I bring to
- 00:20:44work today and things like that right in
- 00:20:47Vietnam we have the Vietnamese version
- 00:20:49of sandwiches the bangi but it's not
- 00:20:50like I eat bangi every day I have like
- 00:20:53so many other option I don't need to
- 00:20:54have bread every day okay next story
- 00:20:58comes from aana I live in France and my
- 00:21:01French girlfriend is shocked when I from
- 00:21:05Madagascar food culture there is very
- 00:21:07close to Asia even if it's Africa eat
- 00:21:11pig's feet and all other weird parts of
- 00:21:14an
- 00:21:14animal what did you have to get used to
- 00:21:18you want to start first or can I confess
- 00:21:20something yeah you can confess whatever
- 00:21:22you want this is the open open free and
- 00:21:26safe space is that a safe space it's
- 00:21:29very safe it's just you and the internet
- 00:21:32okay when it comes to eating weird
- 00:21:34looking food I am even more hardcore
- 00:21:36than an average vietamese person I
- 00:21:39really I don't know why but they just
- 00:21:41taste better than those normal white
- 00:21:44meat that you can find everywhere I love
- 00:21:47chicken neck for example chicken wing
- 00:21:50chicken feet pig feet animal intestine
- 00:21:54if you cook them right they taste super
- 00:21:56good as well um I cannot find any of
- 00:21:59that in Germany and sometime when I'm
- 00:22:02lucky enough I could find some German
- 00:22:04boyfriend is traumatized he's super
- 00:22:07scared of that he's not uh like when
- 00:22:11whenever I eat a chicken feet he
- 00:22:13wouldn't dare to look at me in the
- 00:22:15eyes yeah it's just like very weird and
- 00:22:18the sound that it makes is also very
- 00:22:22weird it's like eting Bon ghoul ghoul on
- 00:22:25the
- 00:22:27graveyard I don't know like but I'm fine
- 00:22:29with her eating it of course I mean it's
- 00:22:32her her decision to do it I just yeah
- 00:22:35also like the intestines I don't know
- 00:22:37for me it's just a hat thing like when
- 00:22:39when I know that there's in intestines I
- 00:22:42think that is the name pronunciation
- 00:22:44yeah I then I cannot eat it anymore I
- 00:22:48think it mostly comes down to the
- 00:22:50history and the economical background of
- 00:22:52each country like us Vietnamese was
- 00:22:55really poor in the part especially
- 00:22:56during the war so if you a pick you
- 00:22:59would definitely not just eat the meat
- 00:23:01you would try to eat everything and
- 00:23:03actually I like that I mean you you
- 00:23:05don't want to waste stuff yeah if it's
- 00:23:07edible and if it's not toxic then you
- 00:23:09would try to eat it and you guys were
- 00:23:12kind of well off since years and years
- 00:23:15ago so for you guys you just need to eat
- 00:23:17the meat part and you could I don't know
- 00:23:19what you do with the intestine but
- 00:23:21possibly throw it away or something or
- 00:23:23put it into dog food or something yeah
- 00:23:26um but that is also the reason why uh in
- 00:23:29Vietnam there are so many interesting
- 00:23:31and weird looking food like we also eat
- 00:23:33a lot of snail as well but the snail
- 00:23:35that you could find the ocean and stuff
- 00:23:37like that we eat a jellyfish oh know do
- 00:23:40you guys eat jellyfish yeah when we get
- 00:23:44some maybe um and what else do we eat
- 00:23:48but but I actually find that that
- 00:23:49thought very very interesting like I
- 00:23:51never thought about that but like
- 00:23:53Vietnamese people really found a lot of
- 00:23:55ways how to make stuff tasty that they
- 00:23:58they had and no one was eating like for
- 00:24:02example I don't know if you saw 's video
- 00:24:04where she was preparing the pumpkin
- 00:24:07pumpkin plant and then you need to skin
- 00:24:09the plant so so that you're able to eat
- 00:24:12it and when when I was doing research
- 00:24:15like what what wild plants here you can
- 00:24:17eat I also found out that over here like
- 00:24:20300 years ago there was a lot of wild
- 00:24:23stuff that people ate and also needed to
- 00:24:25do things and they always say like yeah
- 00:24:28you can use it like spinach you can use
- 00:24:29it like spinach because before people
- 00:24:32didn't have spinach they were using like
- 00:24:34those wild plants and were doing it but
- 00:24:36then when the spinach plant came became
- 00:24:40popular and everyone was just growing
- 00:24:41that everyone just started to eat the
- 00:24:44spinach itself I mean I'm very open to
- 00:24:47trying new food but there is one thing
- 00:24:49that I will never try it's um insects in
- 00:24:53Vietnam it's not that popular but
- 00:24:54whenever you go to Thailand and you go
- 00:24:57to a n you would see people selling a
- 00:24:59bunch of roasted insect that look
- 00:25:02exactly like insect basically they just
- 00:25:04keep the whole shape and they just roast
- 00:25:05it
- 00:25:07um and and they look and they look
- 00:25:09really scary the reason why I don't want
- 00:25:11to eat them is not because they are
- 00:25:13scary is mostly because they properly
- 00:25:15come from the farm and they properly
- 00:25:17come from the nature so people don't
- 00:25:19just like keep them in and raise them
- 00:25:21like a pig so basically I think they get
- 00:25:23a lot of um pety in them as well when
- 00:25:26people put pety in the farm or they
- 00:25:28would get toxic somewhere as well and
- 00:25:31then you eat them because you think
- 00:25:33they're from the wild for example in our
- 00:25:35Rice Field there is this uh insect that
- 00:25:37is pretty long and green and people
- 00:25:39would catch them and eat them when they
- 00:25:41was cutting the rice down but the thing
- 00:25:44is we put so much pide in our rice at
- 00:25:46the beginning so that to protect them as
- 00:25:49well so is it the properly these insect
- 00:25:52get them to so is it really safe to eat
- 00:25:54I'm a bit worried for that so I would
- 00:25:56never try that now okay I can relate to
- 00:25:58that but I mean the the interesting
- 00:26:01thing is like what you were mentioning
- 00:26:03and like you're going to Thailand and
- 00:26:05then you see all of those like scorpion
- 00:26:07on a stick and stuff Scorpion and then
- 00:26:09you think like ah this is just for the
- 00:26:11tourists I I always thought that but
- 00:26:14then in at one night market I talked to
- 00:26:17a local and I asked like yeah this is
- 00:26:19just for the tourist right and he said
- 00:26:20no like we're actually eating them and
- 00:26:22like in the neighbor neighbor City that
- 00:26:24would be like one of the biggest
- 00:26:26grasshopper Farms like in the world
- 00:26:28really
- 00:26:28they Farm grass okay okay that that
- 00:26:31makes sense that probably safer that
- 00:26:33just catch them yeah yeah definitely I
- 00:26:35mean there's also like I don't know
- 00:26:37scientific reports that we could use a
- 00:26:40lot of those those insect proteins and
- 00:26:43it would be way better than yeah keeping
- 00:26:45cattle pick okay or something okay yeah
- 00:26:50let's see let's see where it goes is
- 00:26:52there any scary food that you dare to
- 00:26:54try in the world honey German boyfriend
- 00:26:57is scary scary food that I tried like is
- 00:27:01that what is the scariest food that you
- 00:27:03ever try
- 00:27:06durian you see how how Dar how daring
- 00:27:11this Manny he ate durian and he act as
- 00:27:13if he just the thing is like if I was
- 00:27:16telling that to my friends like that I
- 00:27:19ate that that fruit then some of them
- 00:27:22would actually think that I'm daring
- 00:27:24okay Jan is so yummy it's very yummy so
- 00:27:28freaking ah it just have the best
- 00:27:30texture it has the best taste it go well
- 00:27:33with everything it just it smells so
- 00:27:35strong that it's a bit embarrassing to
- 00:27:37carry in public I have to say even in
- 00:27:40Vietnam I sometime like if I buy a Duan
- 00:27:42I don't dare to go to a taxi because
- 00:27:44it's super smelly but it's so tasty I
- 00:27:47miss it every day we're about to go go
- 00:27:50traveling again and I really really hope
- 00:27:53that we will still be able to find some
- 00:27:55durian yeah let's keep finger cross no
- 00:27:58but I mean there are people surprisingly
- 00:28:01I just met a Asian like some weeks ago
- 00:28:04and she is like totally scared of jurian
- 00:28:08and the smell and finds it disgusting
- 00:28:10but I mean that are different tastes
- 00:28:13yeah I know I just you bad for them
- 00:28:14because Juan is the best thing on earth
- 00:28:16and they missed the chance to try it MVB
- 00:28:20D
- 00:28:22c919
- 00:28:24said I grew up on food from the
- 00:28:26Netherlands and other recipes that fed
- 00:28:29our family with leftovers for my day for
- 00:28:32my dad's lunch on the next day with my
- 00:28:35om and opa living next door d was spoken
- 00:28:38a lot and I grew up and Sunday dinner
- 00:28:41was at their house every week then I
- 00:28:43moved and met my husband he was raised
- 00:28:47near the Mexican border on spicy Mexican
- 00:28:50food meals that fed us with leftovers he
- 00:28:53could eat all by himself he jokes with
- 00:28:57me about how European food is and what a
- 00:29:00lightweight I am yeah well I think I
- 00:29:04talk about the spiciness of Asian food
- 00:29:06versus European food 100 times in my
- 00:29:09channel it is shocking mean I think do
- 00:29:12you guys can you guys grow Chile in
- 00:29:15European
- 00:29:16country possibly not in a greenhouse I
- 00:29:19guess I guess historically people over
- 00:29:21here cannot really grow chili in the wi
- 00:29:24so that's why their food is not that
- 00:29:26spicy in general but this is just like a
- 00:29:29very wi guess I'm just giving you guys
- 00:29:31the benefit of the doubt do you know
- 00:29:34that there's no other animal in the
- 00:29:36world that eats spicy things but the
- 00:29:39human I don't know every time we have
- 00:29:42this conversation German boyan always
- 00:29:44end up criticizing us for eating
- 00:29:47spiciness and say that we are just
- 00:29:49torturing ourself because it doesn't
- 00:29:51have any flavor but torturing which I
- 00:29:53completely disagree okay world did I say
- 00:29:57that yet okay I was just stating a fact
- 00:30:00okay okay keep talking then you keep
- 00:30:02talking yeah but I was going somewhere
- 00:30:05there
- 00:30:07see see honey the thing is I'm going to
- 00:30:11tell you the reason why people use
- 00:30:13chili actually I don't know okay okay I
- 00:30:16I know actually sorry okay okay really
- 00:30:19yeah yeah like usually you you you use
- 00:30:21it in in countries where you have more
- 00:30:24more problems like with with hygiene and
- 00:30:27stuff it helps you to yeah like not get
- 00:30:31get sick seriously yeah like that that
- 00:30:33is actually that is actually a scentific
- 00:30:36fact okay I was about to I was about to
- 00:30:39explain that for our case we use chili
- 00:30:41to kind of like destroy or what is it
- 00:30:45balance out the unpleasant Taste of our
- 00:30:48food from time to time when you cook
- 00:30:50food with chili especially when the food
- 00:30:52have pretty strong smell like fish or
- 00:30:54seafood for example the chili taste and
- 00:30:57flavor could actually balance the smell
- 00:30:59out and then you would have a very uh
- 00:31:02beautiful tasty flavor without smelling
- 00:31:04too much like fish or other stuff so
- 00:31:07that is why I think people like to use
- 00:31:09chili I heard that you European don't
- 00:31:11even know what is a pepper is in the
- 00:31:14past right is it actually come from Asia
- 00:31:17do you know I don't know we have B
- 00:31:19Pepper for a long time pepper pepper so
- 00:31:23pepper yeah yeah yeah pepper pepper was
- 00:31:24very expensive in the old days and like
- 00:31:27but feel like you guys don't literally
- 00:31:29don't even have it you only you have to
- 00:31:30import it from countries exactly exactly
- 00:31:33and this is why it was so so important
- 00:31:35like the the the sellers the bargainers
- 00:31:39Traders I don't know the the merchants I
- 00:31:42think Merchant is the right word like
- 00:31:44you in Germany you even called them like
- 00:31:47yeah like pepper bags so that yeah
- 00:31:51because of the pepper they they got rich
- 00:31:54and yeah this is basically where where
- 00:31:56Hamburg for example got
- 00:31:58the money from wow they just sell pepper
- 00:32:00and they get well they imported the
- 00:32:02pepper and then they sold it no and they
- 00:32:05also like there were several plants that
- 00:32:08you could use instead of pepper when you
- 00:32:10couldn't afford pepper you know the
- 00:32:12thing is before I live Vietnam I didn't
- 00:32:15appreciate our flavor enough like our
- 00:32:17spices and the way we use herbs and
- 00:32:21spices to cook food I thought it's like
- 00:32:23okay and it's the standard but when I go
- 00:32:26to Germany and when I see you guys using
- 00:32:29spices and Herb to cook it I was like
- 00:32:31damn Vietnamese are actually master of
- 00:32:34art when it comes to cooking and mixing
- 00:32:37flavor we have so many strong flavorful
- 00:32:41herbs and uh roots that you guys don't
- 00:32:44have over here like the galand I hope I
- 00:32:46don't know if you guys know what is a
- 00:32:47Galan it's like a look like a Kuma it's
- 00:32:51a kukuma in in English I think it's
- 00:32:54Kuma I think isn't it no something
- 00:32:58yellow yellow yellow cucumber turmeric
- 00:33:02turmeric yeah it's like a turmeric but
- 00:33:05uh it look like a turmeric but it's have
- 00:33:07completely different taste we have
- 00:33:10um so it's not but yeah what what oh I
- 00:33:14forgot the watery what about the long
- 00:33:17thingy like this that I use all the time
- 00:33:20lemongrass yeah we have lemongrass we
- 00:33:23have um coryander is awesome 100
- 00:33:27different kind of herbs that I cannot
- 00:33:28name in uh Vietnam in English as well
- 00:33:32and then we use them so masterfully for
- 00:33:34each dishes and they all taste super
- 00:33:36strong as well but it fits so well with
- 00:33:38the taste over here when it comes to
- 00:33:40Herb I could name basil then uh sometime
- 00:33:45Rosemary and then a little bit of
- 00:33:48Italian herbs paprika paprika is a
- 00:33:51flavor yeah
- 00:33:52paprika and um P pillion it's everywhere
- 00:33:58partially it is not as diverse as what I
- 00:34:01see in Vietnam and I just really really
- 00:34:04miss our spices you cannot even find
- 00:34:07them that easy over here because you
- 00:34:09basically have to import all of them
- 00:34:11since you cannot grow them over here in
- 00:34:13this weather as well yeah I definitely
- 00:34:15have a point with that I mean that is a
- 00:34:17lot of ingredients a lot of interesting
- 00:34:19ingredients that you also have problems
- 00:34:21finding them here outside of the Asian
- 00:34:25supermarket and yeah you can create a
- 00:34:27lot lot of nice flavors with done
- 00:34:30yeah I think that's it for today I guess
- 00:34:33so too I hope you guys enjoy the talk
- 00:34:36thank you very much for listening and
