- 00:00:00Well, hello and welcome to this
- 00:00:01English lesson about household chores.
- 00:00:04We all live in houses and apartments, and there's certain things
- 00:00:08you need to do every day or every week or every
- 00:00:11month so that you can live nicely, so that things are
- 00:00:15clean and tidy, so that things are well maintained.
- 00:00:19That might be a new phrase for you.
- 00:00:21You want to keep things well
- 00:00:23maintained so that they work properly.
- 00:00:26You want to clean your sink.
- 00:00:27You want to have a nice, very
- 00:00:30clean fridge where you keep your food.
- 00:00:32Refrigerator, by the way, is the longer
- 00:00:34version of that word, but yeah, welcome
- 00:00:36to this English lesson about household chores.
- 00:00:39I think you will enjoy it.
- 00:00:41It will be very useful English vocabulary for you.
- 00:00:45Sometimes when I do these types of lessons,
- 00:00:48they become very popular because people are eager
- 00:00:51to learn the words and phrases they need
- 00:00:53to talk about things like household chores.
- 00:00:56So once again, welcome to this English
- 00:00:58lesson about household chores, mopping floors.
- 00:01:02So I decided to use the ing form of all of
- 00:01:06these words so that you can hear phrases using that form.
- 00:01:10So when you use the ing form, you
- 00:01:12can say things like, I like mopping floors.
- 00:01:15Or mopping floors isn't my favorite thing.
- 00:01:18You could even flip it and use
- 00:01:20it as the subject of the sentence.
- 00:01:22But let's talk about mopping floors.
- 00:01:24Mopping floors is something you do with a mop, and
- 00:01:27you need a pail or bucket as well, and some
- 00:01:30soapy water when a floor isn't very clean.
- 00:01:33And this should, of course, be like a hardwood
- 00:01:37floor or a cement floor or a linoleum floor.
- 00:01:40You don't want to mop your, your rug.
- 00:01:42If you have carpet in a room,
- 00:01:44you certainly don't want to mop it.
- 00:01:46But you would use a mop, and you would use
- 00:01:48that mop to mop your floor to get it all
- 00:01:51nice and clean and to make it smell amazing.
- 00:01:55And then, of course, there's sweeping floors.
- 00:01:58Now, I looked at this picture after I chose it,
- 00:02:00and I thought, the broom looks a little funny.
- 00:02:03I'm actually wondering if this
- 00:02:05picture was generated by AI.
- 00:02:08I get all my pictures from a website where
- 00:02:11I pay a licensing fee, and I'm wondering if.
- 00:02:14Because normally a broom doesn't have a
- 00:02:16funny little bend in the end.
- 00:02:18But anyways, you sweep a floor with a broom.
- 00:02:22One of the rare situations in English, you don't.
- 00:02:26There's no verb to broom that doesn't exist,
- 00:02:29but if you needed to sweep your floor,
- 00:02:32you would need to use a broom.
- 00:02:33Sweeping floors is a good thing to do
- 00:02:36when there's dust on the floor, when there's.
- 00:02:39Maybe after eating, there's some dry food on the floor that
- 00:02:43you need to sweep up and then sweeping the floor.
- 00:02:46Always a good idea to get it nice and clean.
- 00:02:50Cleaning bathrooms.
- 00:02:52This is one of my least favorite things to do.
- 00:02:55If I'm given a choice between cleaning the
- 00:02:58kitchen or sweeping the floor or mopping the
- 00:03:00floor or cleaning bathrooms, I would say cleaning
- 00:03:04bathrooms is my least favorite thing to do.
- 00:03:08I don't often enjoy cleaning bathrooms for some reason.
- 00:03:12They're just the English word we would
- 00:03:14use is gross, like not pleasant.
- 00:03:18But here you can see this
- 00:03:19person is cleaning the bathroom.
- 00:03:21They're cleaning the faucet right now
- 00:03:23to get it nice and clean.
- 00:03:25And you might use words like spotless in English.
- 00:03:28We have a few phrases to describe really clean places.
- 00:03:32You would say that it is
- 00:03:34spotless when you clean a bathroom.
- 00:03:36You probably have.
- 00:03:38Maybe you have a rag, like an old piece of cloth,
- 00:03:41maybe you have a sponge, maybe you have a brush.
- 00:03:44There are a number of different things
- 00:03:46you would use for cleaning bathroom.
- 00:03:52Cleaning toilets, yes, definitely.
- 00:03:54Another thing that is not on my list.
- 00:03:57It's on very low on my list
- 00:03:59of things that I like to do.
- 00:04:01I like a clean house.
- 00:04:04I love having a house that's
- 00:04:06just spotless, that's neat and tidy. We'll use it.
- 00:04:09I'll teach you a few more of
- 00:04:10those kinds of phrases at the end.
- 00:04:13Um, but cleaning toilets, that is not fun. Clean.
- 00:04:17Cleaning toilets is definitely one of my least favorite
- 00:04:20things to do, but it needs to be done.
- 00:04:22So when you clean a toilet,
- 00:04:24you will use toilet bowl cleaner.
- 00:04:27That's the type of cleaner you will use.
- 00:04:29And you'll probably use a toilet brush
- 00:04:31or this person has decided to use.
- 00:04:33I think that is a sponge there.
- 00:04:35It might just be a cloth actually to clean it.
- 00:04:39Doing laundry.
- 00:04:40So you could say doing laundry or washing clothes.
- 00:04:44Both of those would be equally
- 00:04:46acceptable if you're speaking English.
- 00:04:48Doing laundry is, of course, when you put the
- 00:04:50laundry in the washing machine with some detergent.
- 00:04:54So we use the word detergent to talk about
- 00:04:57the soap, basically, that we use to do laundry
- 00:05:00or to clean or wash our clothes.
- 00:05:03When you're done, you might either hang up your clothes or
- 00:05:07you might put them in the dryer to dry them.
- 00:05:10We usually hang up our clothes to save energy because
- 00:05:14if you put your clothes in a dryer, you have
- 00:05:16to spend money on electricity to dry those clothes.
- 00:05:20But doing laundry is definitely
- 00:05:24one of your household chores.
- 00:05:27It's nice on a Monday morning to put on a clean
- 00:05:29shirt and clean clothes before you go to work or school.
- 00:05:34It's always nice to have clean clothes.
- 00:05:38Ironing.
- 00:05:39I don't do a lot of this.
- 00:05:40You can probably tell this shirt has a few wrinkles.
- 00:05:44So you can see right here, this shirt is a bit wrinkly.
- 00:05:48So if you have a shirt that's freshly washed, if you hang
- 00:05:52it up to dry, it usually doesn't need to be ironed.
- 00:05:56But sometimes there are some wrinkles.
- 00:05:58You can see this person is ironing.
- 00:06:01I'm trying to say the word as many
- 00:06:02times as possible because it is a difficult
- 00:06:05word to say for English learners.
- 00:06:08Ironing. Ironing.
- 00:06:10I burnt my face once. Ironing.
- 00:06:13I think I told this story before, but when I
- 00:06:16was in college, I would start the iron and I
- 00:06:18would hold it here to see if it was hot.
- 00:06:21Yeah, I know that's a dumb thing to do.
- 00:06:23And one day when I did that, I actually
- 00:06:25accidentally touched my face and I had a little.
- 00:06:27I had a little triangle burn on my face.
- 00:06:30Thankfully, it was a very, very
- 00:06:32light burn and it went away. You can't see it.
- 00:06:34But yeah, I burned my face once with an iron.
- 00:06:38In English, the phrase we would
- 00:06:39use to describe that is.
- 00:06:41I was being stupid.
- 00:06:43That would be a good phrase to describe that.
- 00:06:46Cleaning the fridge.
- 00:06:48Now this is something you
- 00:06:49don't do necessarily every week.
- 00:06:52This is something you might do every month.
- 00:06:55Cleaning the fridge is not something you would do every
- 00:06:58day because it doesn't get that dirty in the fridge.
- 00:07:01We clean our fridge usually about once a month.
- 00:07:05We take everything out of the fridge and we clean
- 00:07:07our fridge and then we put everything back in.
- 00:07:10But cleaning the fridge is a nice thing to
- 00:07:14do, to have a nice, neat and tidy fridge.
- 00:07:17Let me get a sip of water here.
- 00:07:23Cooking.
- 00:07:24So this is something you do.
- 00:07:25Certainly on a daily basis you need to prepare food.
- 00:07:30Taking out the garbage, you might
- 00:07:32say taking out the trash.
- 00:07:34In my part of Ontario, Canada,
- 00:07:36we often use the word garbage.
- 00:07:38Some people might use the word trash if they live
- 00:07:41in a different part of Canada or the United States.
- 00:07:44But maybe on a daily basis you take the garbage
- 00:07:47bag out of the garbage can in your kitchen and
- 00:07:50you take it and put it in a garbage can
- 00:07:53in the garage, a bigger garbage can.
- 00:07:55You might do this every three or four days.
- 00:07:58We don't take our garbage out every day.
- 00:08:02We usually do it, I think once.
- 00:08:04Well, our garbage truck comes once a week again.
- 00:08:07You can replace the word garbage with
- 00:08:09trash in all of these sentences.
- 00:08:11But yeah, we usually do it once a week.
- 00:08:13If it gets full, we might take it out
- 00:08:15sooner and tie the bag off and put it
- 00:08:17in a bigger garbage can in the garage.
- 00:08:19But, um, taking out the garbage. There's.
- 00:08:23There's two ways to use this phrase.
- 00:08:26Taking out the garbage could mean taking it
- 00:08:28from the kitchens and bathrooms and putting it
- 00:08:30in the garage or in your basement, or
- 00:08:33maybe if you're in an apartment building downstairs.
- 00:08:36And then you can also say, on Wednesdays,
- 00:08:39we take out the garbage because the garbage
- 00:08:41truck comes and picks it up.
- 00:08:46Washing the windows.
- 00:08:47You could also say, cleaning the windows.
- 00:08:50This is something we don't do very often.
- 00:08:54Maybe twice a year, we clean all
- 00:08:57of our windows inside and out.
- 00:08:59We usually do it in the spring, and
- 00:09:01we usually do it again in the fall.
- 00:09:03Our windows don't get too dirty.
- 00:09:06I think if I did live in the city and if
- 00:09:08there was lots of traffic going by my house, lots of
- 00:09:12cars and trucks, I might clean my windows more often.
- 00:09:16But, yeah, you would get.
- 00:09:17In Canada, we use something called Windex.
- 00:09:21It comes in a bottle and it's blue,
- 00:09:23and it's a special cleaner for cleaning windows.
- 00:09:27So, yes, washing windows, always nice.
- 00:09:30After you're done washing the windows,
- 00:09:32you can see really nicely.
- 00:09:34After you're done cleaning the windows, it's a
- 00:09:37lot easier to see out through the window.
- 00:09:41Of course, vacuuming, another very common thing that
- 00:09:45you need to do if you want your
- 00:09:47house to be neat and tidy.
- 00:09:49A vacuum cleaner is what you use.
- 00:09:52And this basically sucks up anything that's
- 00:09:55on the floor or in your carpets.
- 00:09:58So most people own a vacuum cleaner, and they
- 00:10:01use it to clean the rooms that have carpet.
- 00:10:05You might use the vacuum cleaner on a hardwood floor.
- 00:10:08I know some people will vacuum their linoleum
- 00:10:12floor or vinyl floor or hardwood floor.
- 00:10:15They'll vacuum the floor before they mop it, but we
- 00:10:18generally sweep our floor before we mop it, and we
- 00:10:21just vacuum the rooms where we have carpet.
- 00:10:26Cleaning carpets.
- 00:10:27Now, this is similar to vacuuming, but this
- 00:10:30is done with a slightly different machine.
- 00:10:33In my part of the world, you can rent
- 00:10:35a carpet cleaner, which is a machine that uses
- 00:10:39soap and water to clean your carpets.
- 00:10:43We don't do this very often.
- 00:10:45We do this maybe every five or ten years.
- 00:10:48It's actually been a while since
- 00:10:50we've rented a carpet cleaner.
- 00:10:52So you can go and rent a machine called a
- 00:10:54carpet cleaner, and you put special carpet cleaner solution in
- 00:10:59it, and you use it to deep clean your carpet.
- 00:11:03So it's, um, it's definitely a
- 00:11:06lot better than a vacuum.
- 00:11:09It definitely does a deeper cleaning because it uses, it shoots
- 00:11:13soap and water in and sucks it back out again.
- 00:11:16Makes your carpets, super clean.
- 00:11:19Cleaning the stove, cleaning the oven.
- 00:11:21So again, when you cook food kind
- 00:11:24of bubbles and boils and splatters, there's
- 00:11:28a good word when something splatters.
- 00:11:30Like if you're cooking something in the oven, it might
- 00:11:33start to bubble and splatter, so pieces will shoot out.
- 00:11:36So you do need to clean the stove.
- 00:11:39That's the cooktop.
- 00:11:40And you do need to clean the oven like
- 00:11:43this person is doing every once in a while.
- 00:11:46So again, stove and oven are not the same thing.
- 00:11:48The stove is the cooktop, where you use pots
- 00:11:51and pans to boil water or heat up soup.
- 00:11:55And the oven is where you would bake or cook
- 00:11:57things like meat or cakes and those kinds of things.
- 00:12:01But you definitely need to clean the oven.
- 00:12:05Some ovens have a self cleaning setting.
- 00:12:09I don't find those work as good.
- 00:12:12It's where you close the oven and it heats
- 00:12:14to a really high temperature for an hour.
- 00:12:17I think it's better to actually
- 00:12:19clean the oven this way.
- 00:12:24Dusting.
- 00:12:25So we live in a dusty world.
- 00:12:27Dust is really, really fine and hard to see.
- 00:12:31There's probably dust on.
- 00:12:33Yep, there's dust on the top of my
- 00:12:35computer and my computer monitor right now.
- 00:12:38There's even dust a little bit on
- 00:12:41the top of my camera lens.
- 00:12:44And so we have to do a little bit of dusting.
- 00:12:47You need to dust every once in a while.
- 00:12:48You can use a duster to dust.
- 00:12:51You can use, um, just a cloth.
- 00:12:53You can use a cloth to dust.
- 00:12:55But definitely before you wipe something with a wet cloth,
- 00:13:00it's always a good idea to dust first to do
- 00:13:03a little bit of dusting to clean up that dust.
- 00:13:06I have a duster, but I don't
- 00:13:07have it right beside me right now.
- 00:13:10Not sure where it went.
- 00:13:11It's somewhere around here, but it's really nice to do
- 00:13:14a little bit of dusting before you wipe up with
- 00:13:17a damp cloth, which is our next slide. Wiping up.
- 00:13:23Sometimes it's just nice to get a cloth and either
- 00:13:27have some cleaner on it, or it's just a damp
- 00:13:30cloth with a bit of water, or it's a cloth
- 00:13:33with a little bit of soapy water.
- 00:13:35And you would use this to wipe up a table, you
- 00:13:39might wipe a countertop, you might wipe a tabletop, you might
- 00:13:43wipe your coffee table, you might wipe your desk.
- 00:13:46Sometimes I wipe my desk off after I dust
- 00:13:49it, and it's just a way to get it
- 00:13:51super clean and really in nice shape.
- 00:13:55I like it when my desk is totally.
- 00:13:58When I'm done wiping up my desk.
- 00:13:59It's really clean. Squeaky clean.
- 00:14:02There's another way to say it.
- 00:14:04It's always nice to have your desk squeaky clean.
- 00:14:08And I don't actually do this.
- 00:14:10Jen and I don't polish our furniture.
- 00:14:14But this is something where if you have
- 00:14:16really nice furniture, you might have furniture polish.
- 00:14:20It's a special kind of spray.
- 00:14:22And then you might polish your furniture.
- 00:14:25So this is something you do after dusting, after wiping
- 00:14:29up, you might polish your furniture to make it nice
- 00:14:32and shiny and look really clean and new again.
- 00:14:37Jen and I don't do a lot of
- 00:14:39polishing because we don't have super nice furniture.
- 00:14:42I think maybe just our kitchen table, but we,
- 00:14:46we don't have anything super nice to polish.
- 00:14:50So no need to do that household chore at all.
- 00:14:56Doing dishes, washing dishes.
- 00:14:57So in my part of the world, we use both phrases.
- 00:15:02Doing the dishes right after supper is a good idea.
- 00:15:06It's not nice to leave the dishes in the sink because
- 00:15:09doing the dishes in the morning is not as fun.
- 00:15:13It's not nice to eat at night and then leave
- 00:15:16the dishes and then do them in the morning.
- 00:15:18So we usually do the dishes right after we eat.
- 00:15:21You could also say washing the dishes.
- 00:15:23Both phrases are totally interchangeable.
- 00:15:29Excuse me.
- 00:15:30That was a sneaky cough that just came up.
- 00:15:33But doing dishes, washing dishes, always a
- 00:15:36good idea to do that immediately.
- 00:15:38As soon as you're done eating,
- 00:15:40do the dishes, wash the dishes.
- 00:15:42Or if you're lucky, you can
- 00:15:45load or unload the dishwasher.
- 00:15:48Loading the dishwasher is when you
- 00:15:50put the dishes in the dishwasher.
- 00:15:52And then of course, unloading the dishwasher is when you
- 00:15:55take the dry clean dishes out of the dishwasher.
- 00:15:59I'm not sure which one this man is doing.
- 00:16:02He's either loading the dishwasher or
- 00:16:05he might be unloading the dishwasher.
- 00:16:07It's kind of hard to tell.
- 00:16:09The dishes do look kind of clean, right? I don't know.
- 00:16:12Tell me in the chat what you think he's doing.
- 00:16:14Is he loading or unloading the dishwasher?
- 00:16:17I'm curious what you thing.
- 00:16:19But anyways, if you have a dishwasher,
- 00:16:22you don't have to do the dishes.
- 00:16:24You don't have to wash the dishes.
- 00:16:26You just put them into the dishwasher.
- 00:16:28You load the dishwasher and run it.
- 00:16:30Although you might rinse the dishes before
- 00:16:34you put them in the dishwasher.
- 00:16:36That's always a good idea.
- 00:16:37Remove any food that is on the dishes.
- 00:16:42Making beds.
- 00:16:43This is something people generally do
- 00:16:45right away in the morning.
- 00:16:47Making beds is a good thing.
- 00:16:49It's a good thing to do.
- 00:16:50When you get up, get up and
- 00:16:52then make your bed right away.
- 00:16:53All this means is that you put the sheets and blankets
- 00:16:57back in place instead of leaving them all messed up.
- 00:17:01Maybe you're, um, when you sleep, you toss
- 00:17:03and turn and roll around a lot.
- 00:17:05Um, but you might want to get up and then make the bed.
- 00:17:09Um, if you don't make the bed right away in the
- 00:17:11morning, you just have to make it before you get back
- 00:17:14in it at night before you go to bed.
- 00:17:16So making the bed a good
- 00:17:19household chore to do right away.
- 00:17:22Spring cleaning.
- 00:17:23So this is something that is
- 00:17:25obviously only done once a year.
- 00:17:28This is when you clean in the spring, usually for
- 00:17:32us, because winter is over and we start to open
- 00:17:35our windows in the spring, the weather is nicer.
- 00:17:39We usually do a thorough cleaning of our house.
- 00:17:43This is called spring cleaning.
- 00:17:45So you open the windows, you
- 00:17:47wash the floors extra, extra good.
- 00:17:50You just do a really, really good job.
- 00:17:52Maybe you wash the windows or clean the
- 00:17:54windows, but spring cleaning is definitely one of
- 00:18:00the things that I don't enjoy.
- 00:18:03But I love it when we're done spring cleaning.
- 00:18:05We haven't actually done any
- 00:18:07spring cleaning here this year.
- 00:18:09We should probably do a bit of spring
- 00:18:11cleaning before the busyness of summer begins.
- 00:18:16Tidying up.
- 00:18:17So there are a number of different ways
- 00:18:19to talk about the act of just making
- 00:18:23sure everything's in the right spot.
- 00:18:25So you might say you're going to do some tidying up.
- 00:18:29You're going to be putting things away,
- 00:18:31you're going to be cleaning the house,
- 00:18:34or you're going to be straightening up.
- 00:18:35I think those are the four.
- 00:18:37Let me just peek at the next one. Yeah.
- 00:18:39So tidying up is simply, maybe there's stuff on the
- 00:18:43floor and it all needs to be picked up.
- 00:18:46I'm not sure why this person has pizza on the floor.
- 00:18:49Maybe they just had a party.
- 00:18:50But tidying up means there's stuff on the floor, maybe
- 00:18:55on tables that isn't where it's supposed to be.
- 00:18:58And so you are going to pick everything up.
- 00:19:00You're going to pick up the garbage
- 00:19:01and put it in the garbage can.
- 00:19:03You're going to pick up other things and put them away
- 00:19:06as well, put them where they are supposed to be.
- 00:19:08So you might say to a
- 00:19:10friend, don't come over right away.
- 00:19:12I have to do some tidying up.
- 00:19:14So come in an hour.
- 00:19:15And that means maybe you have to pick some things up.
- 00:19:18Putting things away.
- 00:19:20I think is fairly obvious when
- 00:19:22you take things off the shelves.
- 00:19:24Maybe you take a book off the shelf, maybe
- 00:19:27you have all of your remote controls go in
- 00:19:30a special little basket by your couch so that
- 00:19:33when you watch tv you can find them.
- 00:19:36But putting things away simply means everything has a place
- 00:19:40and you're going to put everything in its place.
- 00:19:44In my room, my one camera sits here all the time.
- 00:19:48My other camera sits here.
- 00:19:50I charge my stuff over there by that computer.
- 00:19:53So if I was to come to this room and
- 00:19:56it was a bit messy, I would put things away.
- 00:19:58I would put things where they need to be.
- 00:20:03Cleaning the house.
- 00:20:03We talked about this briefly earlier.
- 00:20:05This is the general term for
- 00:20:08household chores that are about cleaning.
- 00:20:11So not every household chore is related to cleaning.
- 00:20:14But when you say, oh, I'm busy Saturday morning, we're
- 00:20:18going to be cleaning the house for a couple hours.
- 00:20:21Why don't you come for lunch?
- 00:20:22So you're just telling people that you're going to
- 00:20:25be making sure everything is clean in your house.
- 00:20:29You're probably going to vacuum.
- 00:20:31You're going to do a lot of things like that.
- 00:20:33And vitor in the chat is using the word decluttering.
- 00:20:36That is another good word for decluttering, means
- 00:20:40to get rid of things that you don't
- 00:20:43need as well and then straightening up.
- 00:20:47This simply means maybe you like
- 00:20:49to have everything very orderly.
- 00:20:52So maybe in your kitchen you have coffee and tea in
- 00:20:56nice jars, and maybe they've been moved a little bit.
- 00:20:59You're going to put them exactly
- 00:21:00back where you want them.
- 00:21:02This person is straightening up.
- 00:21:04He's putting the books back on the
- 00:21:06shelf properly where they're supposed to go.
- 00:21:11Now, a few other random things.
- 00:21:13Shaking out the rug or mat
- 00:21:15is another part of household chores.
- 00:21:18Usually by someone's front door.
- 00:21:21They will have a mat inside the front door, and
- 00:21:25that mat gets a little bit of mud and dust
- 00:21:27and maybe little stones on it because you're coming in
- 00:21:30with your shoes or boots on from the outside.
- 00:21:33And so generally you take that
- 00:21:34outside and you shake it.
- 00:21:36So shaking out the rug or shaking out
- 00:21:38the front mat is another thing that you
- 00:21:41will do when you are doing household chores.
- 00:21:45Emptying the litter box.
- 00:21:47If you have a cat, the cat has to eat,
- 00:21:52and then something else happens that the cat has to
- 00:21:55do and they do it in the litter box.
- 00:21:57Basically, your cat has to pee and poop.
- 00:21:59And so you have somewhere in your house a litter
- 00:22:02box, and you need to clean the litter box.
- 00:22:05Every once in a while, you
- 00:22:06need to empty the litter box.
- 00:22:08And you usually have a special scoop for that so that
- 00:22:11you can scoop out the cat pee and the cat poop.
- 00:22:14If you don't do this, eventually
- 00:22:16your house will not smell good.
- 00:22:18It will smell horrible.
- 00:22:19So it's nice to have pets.
- 00:22:21It's nice to have things.
- 00:22:23It's nice to have cats.
- 00:22:24But you do need to empty the litter box
- 00:22:27every once in a while changing the sheets.
- 00:22:31So when you make the bed, it means that you are,
- 00:22:35you know, the sheets and blankets that are on the bed,
- 00:22:37you're just putting them back so they're smooth and tidy.
- 00:22:41But you do want to change the
- 00:22:43sheets every once in a while.
- 00:22:44Changing the sheets is something you
- 00:22:46might do once a week.
- 00:22:47You take off the sheets that you've used for seven
- 00:22:50days and you put new sheets on the bed.
- 00:22:53Sorry, clean sheets on the bed.
- 00:22:55They might be new, but clean sheets and then
- 00:22:57the other ones will go into the laundry.
- 00:23:00We usually change our sheets once a week.
- 00:23:02That's pretty standard.
- 00:23:03Some people change their sheets every other day.
- 00:23:06Some people, I think, change their sheets once a month.
- 00:23:09There's a variety of schedules for changing sheets.
- 00:23:14Watering the plants is another chore
- 00:23:17that needs to be done.
- 00:23:18If you don't water the plants, they don't survive.
- 00:23:21So it's important to take some time to
- 00:23:23water plants and don't over water them.
- 00:23:27Plants don't like to be over watered.
- 00:23:29That's when you give them too much water.
- 00:23:32But watering the plants.
- 00:23:33Jen waters the plants and my
- 00:23:35one daughter waters the plants.
- 00:23:37I'm not good at watering plants.
- 00:23:39I usually give them too much water.
- 00:23:44Apparently.
- 00:23:44I have the same picture here.
- 00:23:46That wasn't the, that wasn't what
- 00:23:47was supposed to be here.
- 00:23:49But that's a mistake.
- 00:23:51But you want everything to be neat and tidy.
- 00:23:54You want everything to be spotless.
- 00:23:56You want everything to be squeaky clean.
- 00:23:59You want everything to be clean as a whistle.
- 00:24:02So we have a few phrases in English that
- 00:24:05we use to talk about what our house looks
- 00:24:08like after we've done all our household chores.
- 00:24:11It's really nice when your house is neat and tidy.
- 00:24:15I use the word spotless as well.
- 00:24:17You know how when you wash the tap in a sink,
- 00:24:21it's all shiny and there's no dots or spots on it?
- 00:24:25It's nice when things are squeaky clean.
- 00:24:27Like, so clean that it's almost like your finger makes
- 00:24:31a squeaky noise when you go along with your finger.
- 00:24:35And it's nice when things are clean as a whistle.
- 00:24:38So just really, really clean.
- 00:24:40This lady's cleaning her kitchen and it
- 00:24:42looks like it's clean as a whistle.
- 00:24:44There's a whistle for you.
- 00:24:46I don't know where these phrases come from,
- 00:24:49but they are definitely phrases we use to
- 00:24:52talk about when things are really clean.
