The speaker expresses gratitude for being present and introduces the topic of baptism, referencing the Great Commission from Matthew 28, which emphasizes the importance of baptism as a command from Jesus. He highlights that baptism signifies entry into the New Covenant and the church, serving as a public declaration of faith in Christ.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The speaker discusses the significance of baptism, noting that it is an initiatory rite that marks a believer's transition from being in Adam to being in Christ. He emphasizes that the New Testament does not recognize any Christian who has not been baptized, indicating the importance of baptism in the life of the church.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The speaker addresses the historical disagreements surrounding baptism, including its meaning, proper subjects, and modes of administration. He notes that the early church practiced believer's baptism by immersion, while infant baptism arose later, leading to ongoing debates within Christianity.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
The speaker argues that differing views on baptism reflect broader theological commitments, particularly regarding the relationship between the covenants and the nature of the church. He emphasizes that baptism is a test case for understanding one's overall theology and hermeneutics.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The speaker outlines the covenantal argument for infant baptism, distinguishing it from other views, such as those held by Roman Catholics and Lutherans. He emphasizes that the covenantal view incorporates believers and their children into the church, based on the continuity of God's covenantal promises throughout Scripture.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
The speaker explains the concept of covenant theology, which organizes Scripture around covenants, particularly the Covenant of Grace. He discusses the significance of the Covenant of Grace in relation to the Abrahamic, Mosaic, and New Covenants, emphasizing the unity and continuity of God's redemptive plan.

The speaker elaborates on the essential unity of the Covenant of Grace, arguing that all biblical covenants are part of one overarching plan of salvation. He highlights the continuity between the Old and New Testaments, particularly regarding the people of God and the signs of the covenant.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
The speaker discusses the nature of the church, emphasizing the mixed community of believers and unbelievers within both Israel and the church. He argues that this mixed nature supports the practice of infant baptism, as children are included in the visible covenant community.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
The speaker addresses the relationship between circumcision and baptism, arguing that both serve as signs of entrance into the covenant community. He emphasizes that while the signs are administratively different, they signify the same spiritual realities and the need for faith in Christ.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:00
The speaker concludes by reiterating the covenantal argument for infant baptism, emphasizing the continuity of God's promises and the inclusion of children in the covenant community. He acknowledges the need for further examination of specific biblical texts to support this argument.
- 00:50:00 - 00:55:54
The speaker invites a break before the next session, indicating that the discussion will continue with a focus on specific texts related to baptism.

- 00:00:00[Applause]
- 00:00:04well great to be here with you and uh
- 00:00:07speaking about the water that divides
- 00:00:09right
- 00:00:10so uh and great to be here with my
- 00:00:13beloved colleague Tom Shriner and his
- 00:00:15wife Diane and uh we were last doing
- 00:00:17this uh in Dubai remember was that 2017
- 00:00:20and all that so uh great to uh be
- 00:00:23working together as we do at the
- 00:00:25Seminary but to do so in uh in Denton
- 00:00:28Texas right so uh turn your Bibles to
- 00:00:31Matthew chap 28 right very very familiar
- 00:00:35portion and uh Trey mentioned that there
- 00:00:38is a handout so on the front it's just
- 00:00:41it's just an outline
- 00:00:43just maybe easier to follow as we work
- 00:00:46through some of the material and then on
- 00:00:48the back will be the uh the afternoon
- 00:00:50session so on front and back trying to
- 00:00:53save the trees you know uh put it all in
- 00:00:56one one piece one page but we have here
- 00:01:00we just begin and we're going to just
- 00:01:01look at just mention a bit on baptism
- 00:01:04and its importance but of course it's
- 00:01:06important because of our Lord Jesus's
- 00:01:08Command right at the Great Commission so
- 00:01:11we pick up in verse 18 Jesus came to
- 00:01:13them and said all authority in Heaven
- 00:01:16and Earth has been given to me therefore
- 00:01:18go and make disciples of all Nations
- 00:01:21baptizing them in the name of the father
- 00:01:25of the son and of the Holy Spirit and
- 00:01:28teaching them to obey everything I have
- 00:01:29Comm commanded you and surely I Am With
- 00:01:31You Always even to the end of the age
- 00:01:35right so there's the Great Commission
- 00:01:37you have that given in a number of
- 00:01:38places uh in the New Testament this is
- 00:01:41probably the most famous where our Lord
- 00:01:44speaks of his authority as a result of
- 00:01:46his work right all authority has been
- 00:01:48given to him well he's the Eternal son
- 00:01:49who has all authority yet as the
- 00:01:51Incarnate son who has come uh and lived
- 00:01:55and died and been raised and then will
- 00:01:58now Ascend and pour out the spirit
- 00:02:00uh he has put all things under his feet
- 00:02:02he has acted as the last Adam uh God the
- 00:02:06son incarnate who has achieved all of
- 00:02:07that and in light of that right he says
- 00:02:10all authority has been given to me and
- 00:02:12he says as the King of Kings he commiss
- 00:02:15us to go into the world to make
- 00:02:17disciples to take the gospel to All
- 00:02:20Nations so that out of those Nations the
- 00:02:22church will be formed from every tribe
- 00:02:25Nation people and tongue and as we go
- 00:02:28and as we proclaim the gospel we
- 00:02:31baptize baptize in the Triune name well
- 00:02:35that speaks of the significance
- 00:02:37certainly of baptism it also speaks of
- 00:02:39its
- 00:02:40ongoing nature right in the sense that
- 00:02:43some in the Christian church think that
- 00:02:45water baptism is something that uh is
- 00:02:48not for this age a Salvation Army and
- 00:02:51others well the New Testament makes it
- 00:02:53very clear that there are two ordinances
- 00:02:57or two sacraments depending on how one
- 00:03:00defines the term Sacrament but usually
- 00:03:02we speak of it as that which is ordained
- 00:03:05commanded by Christ two ordinances which
- 00:03:07the lord of the church has given the
- 00:03:09church for the church's life and health
- 00:03:11until he comes right and of course
- 00:03:13that's baptism which functions as an
- 00:03:16initiatory right it signifies that one
- 00:03:20has entered into the New Covenant one
- 00:03:24has become a member of the church one
- 00:03:26has come to faith in the Lord Jesus and
- 00:03:28it's a public de aration it's the only
- 00:03:31really public declaration that we have
- 00:03:32in the New Testament of how do we bear
- 00:03:34witness of our faith well we do that on
- 00:03:36a daily basis but we first do that in
- 00:03:38the waters of baptism right which
- 00:03:40signify that we have gone from what we
- 00:03:43once were in Adam to what we are now in
- 00:03:45Christ that Christ is our Lord and
- 00:03:47savior so we declare his lordship that
- 00:03:50he is the one that we have come to know
- 00:03:52and Obey and as a result of that this
- 00:03:55initial ordinance and then of course
- 00:03:56Lord's Supper is continuing uh ordinance
- 00:03:58in the church on goinging Fellowship
- 00:04:00feasting upon Christ looking back at his
- 00:04:03work for us and looking forward to his
- 00:04:06coming again uh the New Testament when
- 00:04:08it comes to baptism I think we can make
- 00:04:11this a clear statement that New
- 00:04:13Testament does not know any Christian
- 00:04:16who was not
- 00:04:17baptized it's just simply as you look at
- 00:04:19the book of Acts from Pentecost on
- 00:04:22everyone who repents believes comes into
- 00:04:25the church is baptized right and that
- 00:04:27speaks a lot to our day where people are
- 00:04:29are so loose on baptism right they can
- 00:04:33take it or leave it right they do not
- 00:04:34see it as that which is a public
- 00:04:36declaration that they are in Christ and
- 00:04:38they are part of the church and that
- 00:04:40they have been transformed by the spirit
- 00:04:43so we see in this opening sort of Great
- 00:04:46Commission the importance of baptism its
- 00:04:49significance the church ultimately fails
- 00:04:52in her calling right as she does not
- 00:04:55make disciples and she does not baptize
- 00:04:58them instruct them in the truth of the
- 00:05:00Gospel right so it just simply speaks of
- 00:05:02the importance of baptism right it's not
- 00:05:05something that is
- 00:05:06incidental uh it's very significant and
- 00:05:09it ties us ultimately to Christ and the
- 00:05:11gospel right now the question is what is
- 00:05:14baptism what exactly is baptism we know
- 00:05:16through church history there's a long
- 00:05:18history of disagreement we all say we
- 00:05:21need to be baptized at least most say
- 00:05:24that um most do they say baptism is that
- 00:05:28which brings one into the church right
- 00:05:30there's agreement on that but beyond
- 00:05:33that right the meaning of
- 00:05:35baptism uh ultimately it's proper
- 00:05:38subjects who receives
- 00:05:41baptism and even questions of its mode
- 00:05:44right how does baptism take place is it
- 00:05:47sprinkling is it pouring is it immersion
- 00:05:50I mean all of these various debates so
- 00:05:53the meaning of It ultimately who
- 00:05:55receives it and its mode there's long
- 00:05:58history of disagreement on that that
- 00:05:59that takes us back to the early church
- 00:06:02and we can then debate historical
- 00:06:04theology in the earliest Church it seems
- 00:06:06that right they were baptizing Believers
- 00:06:08there's baptismal by immersion we see
- 00:06:10evidence of that even in archaeology but
- 00:06:12then infant baptism arises fairly
- 00:06:16quickly and continues all the way
- 00:06:18through the Protestant Reformation and
- 00:06:19then we have those who push back on it
- 00:06:22the anabaptist and ultim the Baptist
- 00:06:24tradition that says no no no no we've
- 00:06:25misunderstood scripture we should not be
- 00:06:27baptizing infants we should be baptizing
- 00:06:29Believers right and then the various
- 00:06:32debates so despite these debates right
- 00:06:35some try to then say well uh we'll just
- 00:06:38make it secondary a secondary issue
- 00:06:40we'll have churches that join together
- 00:06:42both multiple views of baptism I don't
- 00:06:45think that is a wise kind of thing given
- 00:06:48what baptism is uh so we then have to
- 00:06:51wrestle with who is right right who what
- 00:06:54is the meaning of baptism who should
- 00:06:55receive it and issues even of mod right
- 00:07:00and for the most part unless Tom's going
- 00:07:02to deal with mode issues he probably
- 00:07:03will probably maybe mention some of that
- 00:07:05I'm not going to deal with the mode so
- 00:07:07much as more right the defense of a
- 00:07:11Believer view of baptism for those who
- 00:07:14have profess faith in Christ and
- 00:07:15ultimately the subjects of that are
- 00:07:17believers right not those who are those
- 00:07:19who have not yet professed faith in
- 00:07:21Christ now the baptism issue is also uh
- 00:07:25a very significant one because it's
- 00:07:27there are certain areas in theology that
- 00:07:29are what I call test
- 00:07:32cases what I mean by a test case is what
- 00:07:34your view on a particular issue is in
- 00:07:37this case baptism
- 00:07:39reflects whole theological commitments
- 00:07:42on a whole host of other areas right and
- 00:07:44that's why this issue is not about
- 00:07:47simply one or two passages right so
- 00:07:51we're going to look at and Tom will look
- 00:07:52at text after text and on the issues of
- 00:07:54baptism but ultimately the issue at
- 00:07:57stake here is different views of baptism
- 00:08:00reflect your whole view of how the Bible
- 00:08:03fits
- 00:08:04together and that is why right it's not
- 00:08:07easy right to resolve the issue these
- 00:08:10issue divides us so deeply because it's
- 00:08:13not just simply VOA here's one text that
- 00:08:16solves all the issues right it's how you
- 00:08:19put text together with text and how you
- 00:08:21ultimately see it in terms of the entire
- 00:08:23Canon so baptism is a test case like
- 00:08:25this I think also uh Sabbath right
- 00:08:29issues of Sabbath Lord's day is also a
- 00:08:31kind of test case of things and other
- 00:08:32issues land issues they they test one's
- 00:08:35theological views and in the end baptism
- 00:08:39reflects how one understands the
- 00:08:41relationship of the covenants right so
- 00:08:44how one understands goes from Adam
- 00:08:46through the Old Testament to Christ it
- 00:08:49also reflects how one understands the
- 00:08:52people of God right so what Israel is
- 00:08:56what the church is are they exactly the
- 00:08:58same are they different uh how should we
- 00:09:02then view the relationship between those
- 00:09:04two and then also it will reflect then
- 00:09:07Covenant signs particularly tied to the
- 00:09:10Old Testament Abraham abrahamic Covenant
- 00:09:13Mosaic Covenant even under David under
- 00:09:16the Mosaic Covenant circumcision how
- 00:09:18then we understand the relationship
- 00:09:20between circumcision and then baptism
- 00:09:22which is picked up in the New Covenant
- 00:09:25right in Light of Christ we don't have
- 00:09:27baptism per se under the Old Testament
- 00:09:28we have it now tied to the coming of
- 00:09:30Christ and so uh baptism is now testing
- 00:09:34one's overall theology overall how one
- 00:09:38interprets scripture what we say a
- 00:09:40hermeneutic right how we put together
- 00:09:42texts and how we understand continuity
- 00:09:44across the Cannon as well as differences
- 00:09:47that occur in the coming of Christ and
- 00:09:49in the end I do think the baptismal
- 00:09:52issue even though we have a lot of
- 00:09:55agreement with those who are those who
- 00:09:57differ with us um ultimately it's going
- 00:10:00to reflect how we grasp right how the
- 00:10:02covenants unfold how fulfillment comes
- 00:10:06in Christ and ultimately the newness of
- 00:10:10the New Covenant right and what has now
- 00:10:12happened what is has anything changed in
- 00:10:15redempt of History what has changed and
- 00:10:18it's going to reflect those larger
- 00:10:19issues so my task here is to
- 00:10:23describe first one particular view of
- 00:10:28baptism right there's mult multiple
- 00:10:29views there's Roman Catholic views of
- 00:10:31baptism there's Lutheran views of
- 00:10:32baptism uh but we're looking at those
- 00:10:34who are much closer to us in terms of
- 00:10:37our Viewpoint which is the covenantal
- 00:10:39view of
- 00:10:40baptism so it is looking at a view of
- 00:10:42baptism that would distinguish it from
- 00:10:45Catholic and Lutheran it does not hold
- 00:10:47to that by the act of baptism
- 00:10:50regeneration takes place right instead
- 00:10:54it's arguing for Covenant incorporation
- 00:10:57right particularly of those who profess
- 00:10:59Faith outside of any kind of Christian
- 00:11:02family somebody hears the gospel they be
- 00:11:03baptized they come into the church but
- 00:11:05also then of those who are believers who
- 00:11:08have children Believers and their
- 00:11:10children so we're looking at the
- 00:11:11covenantal argument for infant baptism
- 00:11:14and laying that out and then Tom will
- 00:11:17look at the various texts in the New
- 00:11:19Testament that will speak against that
- 00:11:22right and then I'll come back and
- 00:11:24provide more of sort of a larger
- 00:11:26biblical sort of theological look at
- 00:11:29these points that I raise here a kind of
- 00:11:31response to them uh and saying um I
- 00:11:35don't think this covenantal argument
- 00:11:37from baptism works as you work across
- 00:11:40the entire Bible right so it's text in
- 00:11:42relation to the entire Canon right now
- 00:11:45on your your handout I give you sort of
- 00:11:47an overall
- 00:11:49summary of the covenantal argument and
- 00:11:52then we deal with it in terms of
- 00:11:54specifics right so the specifics will
- 00:11:57pick up this talk of the of Grace and
- 00:12:00how that works itself out in their view
- 00:12:02of infant baptism defense of infant
- 00:12:05baptism uh the understanding of the
- 00:12:07nature of the church and the nature of
- 00:12:10the New Covenant people and its relation
- 00:12:12to Israel and then the nature of the
- 00:12:13Covenant signs but the overall argument
- 00:12:16is is given in terms of sort of five
- 00:12:19kind of statements that then will
- 00:12:21develop and unack right so first the
- 00:12:25covenantal argument of Covenant of of of
- 00:12:28infant baptism is tied to what is known
- 00:12:30as covenant theology right now covenant
- 00:12:33theology has a whole variety of nuances
- 00:12:36of it but here I'm thinking of a
- 00:12:38particular covenant theology that comes
- 00:12:40out of the Reformation
- 00:12:42post-reformation that is tied to uh the
- 00:12:45magisterial reformers particularly
- 00:12:47Calvin and his heirs what we identify
- 00:12:49then with more of a infant Baptist P
- 00:12:52Baptist covenant theology right and we
- 00:12:55see that in the Presbyterian tradition
- 00:12:57Westminster Confession of faith
- 00:12:59we see that in the Dutch tradition and
- 00:13:02uh and so on so covenant theology looks
- 00:13:05at scripture in terms of covenants right
- 00:13:09so the whole way that you organize
- 00:13:11scripture and this is a little different
- 00:13:13than say dispensational theology so here
- 00:13:16we have the whole Bible is organized in
- 00:13:18terms of covenants particularly three
- 00:13:22covenants and I mentioned those to you
- 00:13:25uh there is a pre-time Eternal Covenant
- 00:13:27that's tied to the plan of God right so
- 00:13:30within the Triune persons there's the
- 00:13:31Covenant of redemption or sometimes
- 00:13:33known as if you want to use Latin
- 00:13:35phrases you got to always be impressive
- 00:13:37with Latin phrases so you have to say
- 00:13:39pactum which means Covenant salutis
- 00:13:42right so it's the Covenant of Salvation
- 00:13:45right so that's within God's Eternal
- 00:13:47plan there is the Covenant of redemption
- 00:13:50as a kind of subset of that Divine
- 00:13:51decree divine plan where father son and
- 00:13:54spirit plan the entirety of redemption
- 00:13:58the father 's election of a people the
- 00:14:00son's Redemption of those people the
- 00:14:02spirit's application of those people
- 00:14:04that's a covenant's plan before the
- 00:14:06foundation of the world that then shows
- 00:14:08itself in history right in the unfolding
- 00:14:10of history that plan then unfolds then
- 00:14:13in terms of History we have then what is
- 00:14:16known as the Covenant of works that is
- 00:14:19given to us in Genesis 1 and 2 right so
- 00:14:22here we have with Adam in the original
- 00:14:25condition is the Covenant head of the
- 00:14:28human race
- 00:14:29he represents us he's the first man
- 00:14:33biologically and he's the first man
- 00:14:35Covenant first man representationally
- 00:14:37and Covenant and he then by his act of
- 00:14:40Disobedience Romans 5 brings sin and
- 00:14:43death into the world so that he if he
- 00:14:46had obeyed God perfectly God would have
- 00:14:50promised and granted eternal life in
- 00:14:53terms of permanent Covenant relationship
- 00:14:55so there's a kind of probation that
- 00:14:57takes place with Adam he fails bring sin
- 00:14:59and death in the world and we then need
- 00:15:01a redeemer to undo what Adam does right
- 00:15:04and the Covenant of Grace then is that
- 00:15:07work that is then the work of Christ
- 00:15:10ultimately right so we need a covenant
- 00:15:12Redeemer who will come so the Covenant
- 00:15:14of Grace begins with that initial
- 00:15:16promise of Salvation in Genesis 3:15
- 00:15:19there's coming a seed of the woman and
- 00:15:21ultimately as you work through entire
- 00:15:22scripture that is Christ right he is the
- 00:15:24seed of the woman that is unfolded for
- 00:15:27us so the Covenant of redemption is one
- 00:15:30Covenant that covers all of the rest of
- 00:15:34the postf Fall covenants right so
- 00:15:37noic um abrahamic Mosaic davidic new are
- 00:15:43all under this larger rubric of the one
- 00:15:48Covenant of Grace that begins in Genesis
- 00:15:503:15 it unfolds through those covenants
- 00:15:53yet the one Covenant of Grace provides a
- 00:15:56lot of unity continuity to the entirety
- 00:16:00of God's plan that reaches its
- 00:16:02fulfillment in history with the coming
- 00:16:04of Christ all of his work undoing what
- 00:16:06Adam is done and then bringing salvation
- 00:16:09to us so that's that larger covenant
- 00:16:11theology that
- 00:16:13governs their understanding then of
- 00:16:17Covenant people Covenant signs and then
- 00:16:20its application to infant baptism so the
- 00:16:23second area here in terms of overall
- 00:16:25summary is is that larger three-fold
- 00:16:27Covenant particularly in his history
- 00:16:29Covenant of Works Covenant of Grace then
- 00:16:31you have and then this I have here on
- 00:16:33your notes Here continuity SL
- 00:16:36substantial slash essential unity all of
- 00:16:39those are terms that are getting at
- 00:16:43right that here with the one Covenant of
- 00:16:45Grace right there's continuity that runs
- 00:16:48all through the covenants to lead us to
- 00:16:50Christ right so from Genesis 3:15 to the
- 00:16:53New Covenant all the covenants are under
- 00:16:56this larger rubric of the Covenant of
- 00:16:59Grace uh you have what substantial means
- 00:17:02is the substance of that Covenant so the
- 00:17:06grounding of that Covenant is the same
- 00:17:09right that's also been Christ the
- 00:17:11essential is just another word for
- 00:17:12Essence right so they're just getting at
- 00:17:14what is Central to that Covenant what
- 00:17:16grounds it is uh salvation by grace
- 00:17:19through faith in Christ alone it's all
- 00:17:22there given to us in promise form in the
- 00:17:25Old Testament Shadow typ typ typological
- 00:17:28structures that unfold yet it's still
- 00:17:30the same Covenant it's that which is
- 00:17:33grounded in Christ and that which
- 00:17:35reaches fulfillment in terms of the New
- 00:17:37Testament so that's what I mean by
- 00:17:39substantial and essential so the
- 00:17:41Covenant of Grace is all the way through
- 00:17:44history from Genesis 3:15 on it's
- 00:17:47administered differently this is how you
- 00:17:50account for differences right so
- 00:17:53obviously the abrahamic Covenant doesn't
- 00:17:55look exactly like the New Covenant right
- 00:17:58circumcision isn't exactly the same as
- 00:18:00baptism so those are administrative
- 00:18:04differences but underneath it is the
- 00:18:07same salvation the same promises the
- 00:18:10same structures and so on and so on so
- 00:18:12that's the idea of the essential Unity
- 00:18:14of the Covenant of Grace and with that
- 00:18:16then because all of the biblical
- 00:18:18covenants so think of Mosaic Covenant
- 00:18:21that uniquely gets tied to Israel and of
- 00:18:24course that's anticipated in the
- 00:18:25abrahamic Covenant out of Abraham will
- 00:18:26come a mighty nation well that nation is
- 00:18:28isra
- 00:18:29right so under that Covenant of Grace
- 00:18:32you have Israel but you also have the
- 00:18:34church it's all part of that one larger
- 00:18:36Covenant so then there is now continuity
- 00:18:39or substantially Central Unity of the
- 00:18:42people of God right so Israel obviously
- 00:18:45is in the Old Testament era the church
- 00:18:47now we identify uniquely with Christ but
- 00:18:50from this perspective here you could say
- 00:18:54that the church truly starts in Genesis
- 00:18:573:15 right it's really not much
- 00:19:00different than the one PE it's just one
- 00:19:02people of God uh throughout the Old
- 00:19:04Testament through the new so that
- 00:19:06there's this continuity so Israel and
- 00:19:08church we see them differently there are
- 00:19:10different places in history in that
- 00:19:12sense yet underneath them all it's still
- 00:19:15the same one people they're still
- 00:19:17receiving the same salvation and the
- 00:19:20Covenant signs that they receive even
- 00:19:22though that they're different
- 00:19:24circumcision gets applied to Abraham
- 00:19:26through the nation of Israel baptism
- 00:19:29uniquely post coming of Christ yet those
- 00:19:33signs signify ultimately the same thing
- 00:19:36right so Israel and church are similar
- 00:19:39in terms of their structure right we'll
- 00:19:42come back to that term structure in
- 00:19:44nature and uh they're also then the
- 00:19:46Covenant signs and that's why I have
- 00:19:48number four essential continuity of the
- 00:19:50Covenant signs they are administered
- 00:19:52differently but they mean the same thing
- 00:19:54and it's very crucial to see that they
- 00:19:56signify the same point right and we'll
- 00:19:59then have to come back to see what they
- 00:20:00actually signify so baptism is the sign
- 00:20:03of the Covenant in the New Testament but
- 00:20:04it's all part of the one Covenant of
- 00:20:05Grace circumcision the sign in the Old
- 00:20:08Testament yet they are meaning the same
- 00:20:10thing pointing to the same thing
- 00:20:12speaking of the same realities yet
- 00:20:14they're just different signs right
- 00:20:16they're just administered differently
- 00:20:17and then of course what really is also
- 00:20:19very very important to them is the
- 00:20:21continuity of households right and of
- 00:20:24course in our day we see such attack on
- 00:20:27marriage
- 00:20:29family and so on and of course that's
- 00:20:31very very very important to emphasize
- 00:20:33right given an o a covenant right
- 00:20:35marriage and family continue to the End
- 00:20:37of the Age very very significant right
- 00:20:40um yet what they'll say here is that in
- 00:20:42the covenants always always children are
- 00:20:44included particularly that is tied with
- 00:20:47Abraham and Carries through with the
- 00:20:49nation of Israel and households and
- 00:20:51children continue and if God puts the
- 00:20:53kid children in that Covenant early on
- 00:20:56he's going to do it all the way through
- 00:20:58Redemptive history there is just a
- 00:21:00continuity of households and if you
- 00:21:02change that and I think this is really
- 00:21:05the main poll of the argument right if
- 00:21:08you change that you're cutting out your
- 00:21:09kids right and you're cutting out the
- 00:21:11families and there has to be some um
- 00:21:15well one person said something very
- 00:21:16negative it's probably not fit to say
- 00:21:19publicly against Baptist but uh you know
- 00:21:21basically you're you're cutting out your
- 00:21:22children right uh and uh that is now
- 00:21:25denying household continuity Through the
- 00:21:27Ages right so this genealogical
- 00:21:29principle genealogical tied to genealogy
- 00:21:32you and your children right is a
- 00:21:34principle that begins we can say even
- 00:21:37with creation but particularly with the
- 00:21:38Abraham it runs through the entirety of
- 00:21:41the covenants and it has to then
- 00:21:44continue in terms of the New Testament
- 00:21:46now in the New Testament we do not have
- 00:21:49one
- 00:21:51explicit example I use explicit we have
- 00:21:54households and so on but none of that is
- 00:21:56definitive we have no explicit example
- 00:21:59of infant baptism in the New Testament
- 00:22:01that doesn't really matter because
- 00:22:03there's a continuity that must continue
- 00:22:05right so there's a overall argument that
- 00:22:07is just there unless unless it's
- 00:22:10specifically abreg in the New Testament
- 00:22:12that's usually the hermeneutic at work
- 00:22:14unless you have specific abreg You by
- 00:22:17default continue it now of course
- 00:22:19there's going to be a lot of Truth in
- 00:22:20that hermeneutic I'm going to also say
- 00:22:22it's not sufficient uh but there's where
- 00:22:25you have the basic overall kind of
- 00:22:28argument so those are the five sort of
- 00:22:30areas that give you some sense right and
- 00:22:33what's working what's really crucial
- 00:22:35here is this notion of uh post fall the
- 00:22:39Covenant of Grace brings forth Christ
- 00:22:43but this real essential substantial
- 00:22:46Unity of this Covenant and with that
- 00:22:47then similarity in the people of God
- 00:22:50similarity in terms of circumcision
- 00:22:52baptism and thus we baptize in the New
- 00:22:56Testament but we do so just like they
- 00:22:58did circumcision in the old a few
- 00:22:59differences obviously male and female
- 00:23:01differences yet they're going to signify
- 00:23:04the same thing so that's the overall
- 00:23:05kind of argument what I want to do now
- 00:23:07is sort of just spell out a few of the
- 00:23:10specifics of that right so that sort of
- 00:23:12gives the big picture of it and then
- 00:23:15zeroing in on now the Covenant of Grace
- 00:23:18the nature of the church Israel church
- 00:23:21and Covenant signs right and then
- 00:23:24speaking of there this continuity that
- 00:23:26is there so Covenant of Grace so we said
- 00:23:28three points those three areas we're
- 00:23:30looking at now under Covenant of Grace
- 00:23:31um we're looking at sort of sort of four
- 00:23:34aspects of it I've already hinted at it
- 00:23:36some of these and we'll just spell them
- 00:23:37out a little bit more but I do think
- 00:23:39that this really is at the heart of
- 00:23:43their argument right the infant Baptist
- 00:23:45argument really goes back to if you can
- 00:23:48establish this essential sort of
- 00:23:51continuity that then impacts Israel
- 00:23:54Church impacts the signs of the Covenant
- 00:23:56say that they're basically the same as
- 00:23:58as you work through Redemptive history
- 00:24:00then of course they're going to have a
- 00:24:01strong argument and this is the appeal
- 00:24:03right so there's not they're not just
- 00:24:05making an argument out of nowhere right
- 00:24:06I mean they're trying to put a whole
- 00:24:08Canon together and they're trying to
- 00:24:09then argue in this kind of fashion right
- 00:24:12uh many of the arguments will say infant
- 00:24:14baptism follows from scripture by to
- 00:24:17quote the Westminster Confession good
- 00:24:19and necessary consequences right so
- 00:24:21these are even though the New Testament
- 00:24:23doesn't give us explicit infant baptism
- 00:24:25these are good and necessary
- 00:24:27consequences that follow from the entire
- 00:24:30Revelation the entire unfolding of God's
- 00:24:33plan right so they're saying we're doing
- 00:24:34Justice to the entirety of scripture BB
- 00:24:38Warfield famous famous prestonian uh he
- 00:24:41says this he was speaking to a Baptist I
- 00:24:43think it was Augustus strong that he was
- 00:24:45speaking to and he says this he says the
- 00:24:48argument in a nutshell right an argument
- 00:24:50for infant baptism in a nutshell is this
- 00:24:53God established his church in the days
- 00:24:56of Abraham and notice the language there
- 00:24:58he established his church in the days of
- 00:25:00Abraham he put children into it they
- 00:25:03must remain there until he puts them out
- 00:25:07he has nowhere put them out right so
- 00:25:09he's saying there's no specific abreg of
- 00:25:11that they are still then members of his
- 00:25:14church and as such entitled to its
- 00:25:18ordinances right so circumcision of old
- 00:25:21Baptist of new right now what's going on
- 00:25:23here right is he's assuming a whole lot
- 00:25:25of things right it's a wonderful sort of
- 00:25:27statement piy you sort of say hm that's
- 00:25:30plausible yet right he's
- 00:25:32assuming quite a bit of continuity
- 00:25:34across the entire Canon right Church in
- 00:25:37Israel basically the same thing
- 00:25:38ordinance is basically the same thing
- 00:25:40right I mean it's this strict essential
- 00:25:41continuity what's underneath it is his
- 00:25:44understanding of the Covenant of Grace
- 00:25:46right and so he's just bringing that in
- 00:25:48so that's what we have to look at now
- 00:25:49this notion of the Covenant of Grace
- 00:25:52right so four four points that just
- 00:25:55simply unpack a little bit more in terms
- 00:25:57of specificity the Covenant of Grace So
- 00:25:59when did it
- 00:26:00begin Genesis 3:15 right so that initial
- 00:26:04promise of Salvation I will provide
- 00:26:08right a seed that will crush Satan's
- 00:26:11head right and that is of course
- 00:26:14unpacked and that's of course crucial as
- 00:26:15we often identify as the First Gospel
- 00:26:17promise so in some sense this Covenant
- 00:26:20begins there in Genesis 3:15 right
- 00:26:25second uh distinction as I've already
- 00:26:27alluded to with the titles of things
- 00:26:29substance or essential right there's an
- 00:26:33important distinction between the
- 00:26:35substance of the Covenant the essential
- 00:26:37nature of that Covenant and its
- 00:26:40Administration so that's a crucial
- 00:26:42distinction to understand the view right
- 00:26:44so in this one overall Covenant of Grace
- 00:26:47same ground of Salvation which we all
- 00:26:50want to affirm right it's in Christ and
- 00:26:52Christ alone right so the Old Testament
- 00:26:54people look forward to him we look back
- 00:26:58right yet there is this substance right
- 00:27:01one Plan of Salvation by grace through
- 00:27:02faith in Christ and it's all then tied
- 00:27:04to the overarching Covenant of Grace uh
- 00:27:08circumcision baptism are administrative
- 00:27:12changes right so they're part of the one
- 00:27:14Covenant going to signify the same
- 00:27:17substance but they are changes and this
- 00:27:19is the way you account for differences
- 00:27:21over time or differences in Redemptive
- 00:27:24history right if the substance is the
- 00:27:27same though so if the Covenant of Grace
- 00:27:30is all the same whether it's noic
- 00:27:33abrahamic Mosaic davidic new then it's
- 00:27:38legitimate to ask what is
- 00:27:41new about the New Covenant right some
- 00:27:45sense you would say there's nothing new
- 00:27:46about it right it's just the same
- 00:27:48Covenant just showing itself now in
- 00:27:51terms of the coming of Christ so what's
- 00:27:53new about the New Covenant now those
- 00:27:55within those who argue for infant
- 00:27:57baptism aren't
- 00:27:58of I mean there there a lot of agreement
- 00:28:01but there's different answers that they
- 00:28:03give that we won't get into it but the
- 00:28:05heart of it they would say what we
- 00:28:08understand in terms of the Covenant of
- 00:28:09Grace is ultimately promise fulfillment
- 00:28:11so what's new about the New Covenant is
- 00:28:13Christ has come I mean there's
- 00:28:15fulfillment but it's still essentially
- 00:28:18the same so the old was more type
- 00:28:22ceremonies sacrifices leading us to
- 00:28:25Christ but the substance has not changed
- 00:28:28so newness is much more in terms of the
- 00:28:30New Covenant renewal right that's often
- 00:28:33how they see this so it's not as if the
- 00:28:35New Covenant is new new right brand new
- 00:28:38it's ultimately renewal right because
- 00:28:40it's all part of the overall Covenant of
- 00:28:42Grace it's not really replacement or
- 00:28:45fulfillment in the sense that there's
- 00:28:48now some major changes of course
- 00:28:51everyone's going to have to admit some
- 00:28:52kind of change but there's much more
- 00:28:55continuity as it gets applied so the New
- 00:28:57Covenant expands the Old Testament it
- 00:28:59gives greater blessing uh baptism now
- 00:29:03gets applied to both male and female
- 00:29:05where circumcision was only of the male
- 00:29:07child uh yet right this is simply more
- 00:29:10of renewal fulfillment that then takes
- 00:29:12place and in fact I just uh will mention
- 00:29:16a few other areas where they'll say this
- 00:29:18is how the New Covenant is is New Right
- 00:29:21a greater power of obedience now comes
- 00:29:23now the Christ has come right so there's
- 00:29:25something greater in that sense there's
- 00:29:27a greater
- 00:29:28Power by the spirit that comes yet Old
- 00:29:31Testament Saints would have still been
- 00:29:33regenerated indwelt with the spirit of
- 00:29:36God and and so on number two extension
- 00:29:39of the knowledge of God to All Nations
- 00:29:41not just mediated through Israel so
- 00:29:42there's a greater sense to that uh
- 00:29:45Christ brings finally the full payment
- 00:29:48of sin Old Testament only anticipated
- 00:29:50that the New Covenant is the final
- 00:29:52administration of the Covenant of Grace
- 00:29:54so there's a finality to it I mean all
- 00:29:56of those ways are ways that they speak
- 00:29:59of something new right yet right and
- 00:30:04we'll come back to this probably this
- 00:30:05afternoon more what's not new is I use
- 00:30:10these two words nature the nature of the
- 00:30:14New Covenant and its structure is
- 00:30:17different right now by Nature this
- 00:30:19really gets out the idea that the New
- 00:30:22Covenant is bound up with people who are
- 00:30:26regenerate right it's not just like we
- 00:30:30have with Israel and Abraham and David
- 00:30:32and so on what we're going to call a mix
- 00:30:34Community meaning right a community that
- 00:30:37has both within it the Covenant has both
- 00:30:40within it the nation of Israel had both
- 00:30:41within it under the Mosaic Covenant both
- 00:30:43Believers and
- 00:30:44unbelievers elect and non-elect right so
- 00:30:47they are not going to see the New
- 00:30:49Covenant different in that way they're
- 00:30:51going to say within the church within
- 00:30:53the New Covenant you still have
- 00:30:55Believers and unbelievers you have
- 00:30:56Believers and their children those
- 00:30:58children aren't necessarily Believers
- 00:31:00until they do believe and they may never
- 00:31:02believe right so they're not going to
- 00:31:04see difference that way which is of
- 00:31:06course crucial to the point and even the
- 00:31:09structuring of the Covenant will be
- 00:31:10slightly different as well so that's the
- 00:31:12issue then of the sort of second issue
- 00:31:15of in terms of this substance
- 00:31:17Administration and that has a number of
- 00:31:19implications for how we understand
- 00:31:21newness uh in terms of the New Covenant
- 00:31:24now third issue in Covenant of Grace
- 00:31:26unconditional condition
- 00:31:29um is the new is the Covenant of Grace
- 00:31:31unconditional usually be unconditional
- 00:31:34you speak of that in terms of uh God
- 00:31:37Will Save Right he will bring about his
- 00:31:39promises that uh he will keep uh the you
- 00:31:43know provide his son and then the the
- 00:31:45Covenant is not based upon us there's
- 00:31:47not a conditionality usually
- 00:31:49conditionality is tied to the Covenant
- 00:31:51of works it was conditioned upon Adam's
- 00:31:54obedience but now in terms of the
- 00:31:57Covenant of gra there's this Grace
- 00:32:00Gospel
- 00:32:01unconditionality element to it
- 00:32:04right yet right there's a lot of debate
- 00:32:07in reformed theology on this conditional
- 00:32:10unconditional
- 00:32:11sense covenant theology
- 00:32:14affirms that there is a
- 00:32:17conditionality to the Covenant of Grace
- 00:32:19for the most part you would think the
- 00:32:20Covenant of Grace is a gospel Covenant
- 00:32:24that would be unconditional but they
- 00:32:25affirm conditionality in two ways
- 00:32:29one they affirm that it's conditional in
- 00:32:32that Christ ultimately must come and
- 00:32:35obey the Covenant of works and thus
- 00:32:37fulfill the Covenant of Grace and that's
- 00:32:39a perfectly important and very
- 00:32:42significant issue right so Christ must
- 00:32:44obey for us he must keep the condition
- 00:32:47we may not but by Grace he obeys he
- 00:32:50achieves his salvation for us right the
- 00:32:53uh the imputation of Christ's
- 00:32:54righteousness to us uh his
- 00:32:56substitutionary death that pays for us
- 00:32:58we do not contribute anything right the
- 00:33:01sufficiency exclusivity of Christ's
- 00:33:03works so all Christians should hold to
- 00:33:05that right so so in that sense right
- 00:33:08someone must obey the Covenant so it's
- 00:33:11conditional in terms of Christ but
- 00:33:12there's another sense of conditional is
- 00:33:16that we still must fulfill certain
- 00:33:19obligations of the Covenant right we
- 00:33:21must repent we must believe we must obey
- 00:33:24and in that
- 00:33:26sense the of Grace has a breakable
- 00:33:29element to it and of course when this is
- 00:33:32combined with the mixed nature of the
- 00:33:35church right there are and and of Israel
- 00:33:38there are believers and unbelievers
- 00:33:39within it you then have the notion that
- 00:33:42within the Covenant there are both
- 00:33:45Covenant
- 00:33:46Keepers and there are Covenant
- 00:33:50Breakers right so we'll see that clearly
- 00:33:53in terms of Israel right many Israelites
- 00:33:56broke the Covenant right uh many of them
- 00:33:58experience death Exile and so on but the
- 00:34:02same idea continues right it's right
- 00:34:04across the entire Covenant Grace with
- 00:34:06the New Covenant there's Covenant
- 00:34:07Keepers there's Covenant Breakers so
- 00:34:11that within the New Covenant of course
- 00:34:13it's tied to the larger Covenant of
- 00:34:14Grace within the New Covenant then we
- 00:34:16can find people who are believers
- 00:34:18unbelievers those who are in the
- 00:34:20Covenant but not necessarily of it right
- 00:34:24that's a crucial distinction that they
- 00:34:26make they're in it by by the act of the
- 00:34:29sign put on them right circumcision and
- 00:34:31then baptism infants can be in it yet
- 00:34:35they may not ultimately believe and they
- 00:34:37show themselves later to be Covenant
- 00:34:40Breakers so you have this distinction of
- 00:34:43conditionality within the Covenant of
- 00:34:44Grace in terms of Covenant Keepers
- 00:34:46Covenant
- 00:34:47Breakers somebody can be in the covenant
- 00:34:50not necessarily of it of it meaning true
- 00:34:53faithful Bible believing uh you know
- 00:34:56faith in Christ
- 00:34:58uh perseverance the elect that will not
- 00:35:00be lost right so you have this notion of
- 00:35:03both uh of in and of in terms of the
- 00:35:06Covenant now that raises the issue
- 00:35:08lastly of of who are the
- 00:35:09parties of the Covenant of Grace right
- 00:35:13given its
- 00:35:15conditionality right not everyone is in
- 00:35:18everyone is in it but not necessarily of
- 00:35:20it right who are the parties of the
- 00:35:23Covenant is it only the
- 00:35:25elect or is it elect and non-elect right
- 00:35:29and coveted theology has debated this
- 00:35:33right the Westminster Confession of
- 00:35:34Faith the Westminster larer catechism
- 00:35:37makes it very clear that the Covenant of
- 00:35:39Grace the parties of that Covenant are
- 00:35:42only the
- 00:35:45elect now if they're only the elect in
- 00:35:47the Covenant of Grace then how do you
- 00:35:50make sense of a mixed Community then so
- 00:35:54if they're only the elects right there's
- 00:35:56many people in that Covenant of Grace
- 00:35:57who are not Believers it's clearly you
- 00:36:00see that with Israel and so on so they
- 00:36:02say the parties of the Covenant of Grace
- 00:36:04are ultimately the elect but what do you
- 00:36:08do with the Believers and their children
- 00:36:09and so this is where they will speak
- 00:36:11about the
- 00:36:12duel aspect of the Covenant of Grace
- 00:36:16what's this well this is a promise
- 00:36:19extended to Abraham and his offspring it
- 00:36:21begins with the abrahamic Covenant now
- 00:36:24what's going on here with this dual
- 00:36:25aspect and we'll come back to the this
- 00:36:28afternoon is that in many ways What's
- 00:36:30Happening Here is they're going to the
- 00:36:32abrahamic Covenant where you clearly see
- 00:36:36circumcise your entire male household
- 00:36:40right your children and he was more than
- 00:36:42that it was even those who worked in the
- 00:36:43household and so on and so on so on when
- 00:36:45you have Israel right you circumcise
- 00:36:47your male child and so on they become
- 00:36:50members of the Covenant they may not
- 00:36:52believe but what's true of the abrahamic
- 00:36:55Covenant what gets picked up in the
- 00:36:56mosaic Covenant gets simply imported and
- 00:37:00brought over to the New Covenant right
- 00:37:01and that's because of their notion of
- 00:37:03this essential continuity so in the
- 00:37:06abrahamic Covenant we clearly see some
- 00:37:08kind of dual aspect we see that in
- 00:37:11Israel's Covenant as well right Paul
- 00:37:14makes it very clear Romans 9:6 not all
- 00:37:16Israel Israel right so there's a dual
- 00:37:17sense of that they could be in it not of
- 00:37:19it but what they'll say then is that now
- 00:37:22is true of the New Covenant as well and
- 00:37:26this becomes the base basis by which
- 00:37:28they can say the genealogical principle
- 00:37:31to you and your children that began with
- 00:37:32Abraham continues all the way throughout
- 00:37:35and now can be applied uh to your
- 00:37:38children but what's Happening Here is
- 00:37:40the Covenant of Grace now is being
- 00:37:43equated and identified with the
- 00:37:46abrahamic Covenant that's really what's
- 00:37:48going on here and they're seeing from
- 00:37:50the abrahamic Covenant that essential
- 00:37:52continuity then continues so that
- 00:37:54there's really no change now then when
- 00:37:57would have to show is there change or
- 00:37:59ask the question is there change I'm
- 00:38:00going to argue that there is actually
- 00:38:02change that the scripture itself
- 00:38:04anticipates and brings to pass in terms
- 00:38:07of Christ so I would say here the
- 00:38:08Covenant of Grace is really spoken of in
- 00:38:10terms of the abrahamic Covenant and then
- 00:38:13it's flipped over to the New Covenant
- 00:38:15and because of this overarching Covenant
- 00:38:17the New Covenant abrahamic Covenant are
- 00:38:19ultimately identified as the same right
- 00:38:22but there's going to be some problems
- 00:38:24with that that's this dual aspect of the
- 00:38:27C
- 00:38:28right now that's some issues there of
- 00:38:30the Covenant of Grace and what's
- 00:38:32governing it right what we have to look
- 00:38:33at is is that way of putting the Bible
- 00:38:38and God's Plan of Redemption together is
- 00:38:40that the best way to do it there's many
- 00:38:43many advantages of it right and there's
- 00:38:45many many truths that it affirms right
- 00:38:48so you know we're not going to say that
- 00:38:51they're all wrong but should we
- 00:38:54understand this larger Covenant of Grace
- 00:38:56is that the best way to do it it or
- 00:38:58should we say to anticipate this
- 00:39:01afternoon should we say yes there is the
- 00:39:04Eternal plan of God yes the father son
- 00:39:07and spirit have planned our Redemption
- 00:39:09from eternity and it's shown in history
- 00:39:11yet the way that that one glorious plan
- 00:39:15is given to us
- 00:39:16unfolds through covenants not just the
- 00:39:20Covenant of
- 00:39:21Grace Covenant of Grace is really a
- 00:39:24theological category that explains the
- 00:39:26one work of Redemption right instead we
- 00:39:29have
- 00:39:30covenants and we then have to see that
- 00:39:32they're all part of one plan yet we have
- 00:39:36to account for each of the covenants
- 00:39:38place in Redemptive history we can't
- 00:39:40just sort of say well the abrahamic
- 00:39:42Covenant and all of its sort of
- 00:39:43geological principles the same as the
- 00:39:45New Covenant and we just sort of equate
- 00:39:47them together there's changes that now
- 00:39:49occur that God himself has ordained that
- 00:39:52God himself has unfolded and so on and
- 00:39:55if we don't see that right
- 00:39:58then we will not be able to see what
- 00:40:00circumcision signifies what baptism
- 00:40:03signifies and so on and so on and so on
- 00:40:05right so that's just to anticipate where
- 00:40:06we're going now the nature of the church
- 00:40:09then the second issue right so we said
- 00:40:10we're delving into this the overall
- 00:40:12argument we gave the Covenant of Grace
- 00:40:14is sort of four sort of questions
- 00:40:17centered in that sort of drilling down a
- 00:40:19little bit more but the second sort of
- 00:40:21major areas on the nature of the church
- 00:40:23so the infant Baptist argument argues
- 00:40:25that you have the administr of the
- 00:40:27Covenant of Grace across time there are
- 00:40:29many who belong to the people of God the
- 00:40:32Covenant Community you have uh those who
- 00:40:36are in it not of it necessarily so you
- 00:40:39have this mixed community that goes all
- 00:40:41the way from Abraham to Israel all the
- 00:40:44way through to the church yet there's a
- 00:40:47Unity there's a continuity so that
- 00:40:49there's really no change in that mixed
- 00:40:52nature As you move to the New Covenant
- 00:40:54right that's not new about it I talked
- 00:40:56about that in terms of the nature of it
- 00:40:58and so on this is where covenant
- 00:41:00theology speaks of the invisible visible
- 00:41:02distinction of the church this is a very
- 00:41:05very common distinction and there's
- 00:41:06again a lot of Truth in it it all
- 00:41:07depends what you do with it so invisible
- 00:41:11right what's the invisible church or the
- 00:41:13invisible Israel right that's the true
- 00:41:16elect within the Old Testament people of
- 00:41:19God and the New Testament people the one
- 00:41:21people of God right so that's the people
- 00:41:23of God through all ages who are true
- 00:41:25believers who are the elect through all
- 00:41:26ages right what's the visible well
- 00:41:28that's what you see right so in Israel
- 00:41:32you
- 00:41:33see uh a covenant Nation right Israel is
- 00:41:37a covenant Nation Under the abrahamic
- 00:41:39promise you see then before your very
- 00:41:42eyes both Believers and unbelievers
- 00:41:44you've got Elijah and Ahab
- 00:41:46simultaneously right you've got all
- 00:41:48kinds of people who are followers of God
- 00:41:50and you also have a rank unbelievers who
- 00:41:52then come under judgment right so the
- 00:41:54visible Israel is a mixed community and
- 00:41:57and we also see that in the
- 00:41:59church so in the church we see those who
- 00:42:03are part of the New Covenant because
- 00:42:04they're all part of the Covenant of
- 00:42:05Grace they are Covenant members they are
- 00:42:09in the Covenant yet they may be Covenant
- 00:42:11Breakers and so on so you have the
- 00:42:13visible nature of the church and this is
- 00:42:15appealed to all the time in all of our
- 00:42:17churches we have both Believers
- 00:42:18unbelievers and and so on and what does
- 00:42:21this have to do then with infant baptism
- 00:42:23there's a continuity from Israel to
- 00:42:26church that mixed nature of the church
- 00:42:27the visible invisible distinction well
- 00:42:29what has to do is that since infants are
- 00:42:32included in visible Israel right they're
- 00:42:35included in the Covenant they may not
- 00:42:37necessarily be the elect the invisible
- 00:42:40but they're brought into the visible
- 00:42:41church right Israel's the church in the
- 00:42:43Old Testament right they're brought in
- 00:42:46by circumcision and they're brought in
- 00:42:48prior to personal confession of Faith
- 00:42:52right that little infant right this view
- 00:42:55does not believe in in in circum ision
- 00:42:57regeneration or baptismal regeneration
- 00:43:00right that infant is given a mark
- 00:43:03they're brought into the community prior
- 00:43:05to any confession of Faith they're part
- 00:43:07of visible covenantal Israel right well
- 00:43:11that's true of the old then that's true
- 00:43:15of the new right so the the sign may
- 00:43:18have changed but in the end right we
- 00:43:21place the mark of baptism on our
- 00:43:24children right they become visible in
- 00:43:28the community visible church yet right
- 00:43:31we pray that they then become invisible
- 00:43:34right they become the elect of all ages
- 00:43:37right so that's how this eventually and
- 00:43:38of course what's going on here is the
- 00:43:40similarity between Israel church right
- 00:43:42and that Mark is put on them the sign is
- 00:43:45put on them prior to conversion right
- 00:43:49now the evidence for this right is how
- 00:43:51do they argue this case well they appeal
- 00:43:53to what you'd expect it's one Covenant
- 00:43:56of Grace so there's ancal continuity
- 00:43:58that governs it they appeal to the fact
- 00:44:01that um presently this is what I have
- 00:44:04here with inaugurated eschatology uh
- 00:44:06they appeal to the fact that even with
- 00:44:08the church fulfillment has come still
- 00:44:11the church presently visibly as a mixed
- 00:44:14Community now in the future right the
- 00:44:16invisible church will all be seen uh all
- 00:44:19of God's elect of all ages will be seen
- 00:44:21uh there will be no um uh anybody who's
- 00:44:24been just simply in the Covenant but not
- 00:44:26of it will be shown to be the case but
- 00:44:29until that happens the church
- 00:44:31presently is simply like Israel of old
- 00:44:35visible invisible distinction mix kind
- 00:44:37of community and part of the strongest
- 00:44:39arguments they make for this in the New
- 00:44:41Testament are the warning passages so
- 00:44:44particularly in the book of Hebrews
- 00:44:45right the author comes to them and says
- 00:44:47you who have
- 00:44:48tasted of the things of God you have
- 00:44:51entered you know seemingly into he's
- 00:44:53addressing seemingly Christians they
- 00:44:55would say see he's addressing Covenant
- 00:44:57members those who are in the Covenant
- 00:45:00but if they fail to persevere they will
- 00:45:03be shown to be Covenant Breakers right
- 00:45:06so there's clearly the warning passages
- 00:45:08assume that they are in the Covenant
- 00:45:11they have the Privileges of the Covenant
- 00:45:13yet they may not truly be Believers
- 00:45:15within it and so that's a common common
- 00:45:18argument and then acts 239 here's where
- 00:45:20in the New Testament even though there's
- 00:45:22no explicit text for infant baptism
- 00:45:24they'll say the default is there so
- 00:45:27Peter will preach in act two to you and
- 00:45:29your children who are far off right as
- 00:45:31he calls them to faith in Christ well
- 00:45:34for you and your children simply is a
- 00:45:36continuation of the household theme and
- 00:45:38that then just means then that there's
- 00:45:40this essential continuity that runs
- 00:45:42cross and of course the households then
- 00:45:44fit in here uh as well and so there's
- 00:45:47the kind of argument so what's going on
- 00:45:49here we have to then ask as we work
- 00:45:51through the covenants right is Israel
- 00:45:54exactly the same as the church right
- 00:45:57they Covenant peoples right the church
- 00:45:59is the people of the New Covenant Church
- 00:46:01Israel is the people under the Mosaic
- 00:46:03Covenant so on there's one people of God
- 00:46:05Through the Ages no doubt yet are there
- 00:46:07covenantal differences can we just flat
- 00:46:09note these differences or do we have to
- 00:46:11say there's something different distinct
- 00:46:15it's changed right that's the issue now
- 00:46:16the Covenant signs we'll finish with
- 00:46:18this third area here is of course this
- 00:46:21follows from the larger rubric of the
- 00:46:24Covenant of Grace and its essential
- 00:46:26Unity the essential Unity of the people
- 00:46:28of God Israel church and of course now
- 00:46:30the Covenant signs given to those people
- 00:46:33right then also have this same kind of
- 00:46:36continuity so given the continuity of
- 00:46:37the Covenant of Grace given the
- 00:46:38continuity of Israel Church the Covenant
- 00:46:41signs namely circumcision and baptism
- 00:46:45signify the same substance right or
- 00:46:48signify the same gospel reality signify
- 00:46:51the same essential message of the
- 00:46:54Covenant of Grace right so the
- 00:46:56relationship ship between circumcision
- 00:46:58and baptism is one of
- 00:47:02administrative
- 00:47:04replacement right so they are changed
- 00:47:06right but it's an administrative change
- 00:47:09circumcision baptism right they don't
- 00:47:12mean different things that would be
- 00:47:14ultimately they are
- 00:47:16different instead they mean the same
- 00:47:18thing signify the same thing and they're
- 00:47:20just simply a replacement there's simply
- 00:47:22administrative kind of replacement no
- 00:47:24doubt in replacing circumcision baptism
- 00:47:26does signify that the promis era of the
- 00:47:28Old Testament has been fulfilled in
- 00:47:29Christ right it's what signifies those
- 00:47:31issues in this sense the New Covenant
- 00:47:33brings with it change I mean everyone
- 00:47:34has to acknowledge change yet the
- 00:47:37meaning of those signs is the same but
- 00:47:40there has been this administrative
- 00:47:42change so what is the essential
- 00:47:45meaning of the signs right of
- 00:47:47circumcision and baptism well
- 00:47:50primarily the signs I mean they signify
- 00:47:52a number of things but they signify
- 00:47:54primarily first and foremost entrance
- 00:47:58into the Covenant people right and the
- 00:48:02blessings of being in that Covenant
- 00:48:05right so they are objectively how do you
- 00:48:08bring somebody into
- 00:48:10Israel you circumcise them right how do
- 00:48:13you bring somebody
- 00:48:15objectively into the church you baptize
- 00:48:18them I mean that's that's the primary
- 00:48:21sense of the meaning of the sign so
- 00:48:23circumcision is this outward
- 00:48:27sign and seal and that phrase is very
- 00:48:29very important sign and seal of the
- 00:48:31entrance into the Covenant of Grace not
- 00:48:34just the abrahamic Covenant or the
- 00:48:35Mosaic Covenant it's an entrance into
- 00:48:38the Covenant of Grace right and the same
- 00:48:40with baptism is an entrance into the
- 00:48:43Covenant of Grace because all those
- 00:48:44biblical covenants are under the larger
- 00:48:46Covenant of Grace it's a sign
- 00:48:48circumcision sign that signifies right
- 00:48:52that that has now happened it's a seal
- 00:48:55that puts on that child the promises of
- 00:48:58that Covenant if you believe right you
- 00:49:01will be then of the Covenant and all the
- 00:49:04promises that pertain but it still
- 00:49:05brings you into the Covenant Community
- 00:49:07it does not regenerate right so this is
- 00:49:09where it's going to differ from Roman
- 00:49:11Catholic and certain Lutheran forms and
- 00:49:14in the same way then right what's true
- 00:49:16of circumcision is true of
- 00:49:18baptism in the New Testament baptism
- 00:49:20replaces its administrative replacement
- 00:49:23of circumcision as the covenant's sign
- 00:49:26and seal under now its New Covenant
- 00:49:28Administration right in baptism as with
- 00:49:30circumcision we are brought into the
- 00:49:32visible Church we're identified with
- 00:49:34Christ in some sense we are seen as
- 00:49:37United with Christ in some sense right
- 00:49:39in that in the sense that we're in the
- 00:49:40Covenant right and we are then
- 00:49:42considered Covenant members right
- 00:49:45there's that in versus of right that
- 00:49:47brings one in but as a circumcision
- 00:49:49baptism does not affect a saving Union
- 00:49:53right it's only by God's grace when the
- 00:49:54spirit makes us alive that one moves
- 00:49:56from
- 00:49:57right a covenant you know um being in
- 00:49:59the Covenant to of the Covenant right
- 00:50:01and so that still has to happen and most
- 00:50:04in the circles we'll speak of that
- 00:50:05usually in terms of some kind of
- 00:50:06confirmation or people affirming their
- 00:50:08baptism down the road and so on now most
- 00:50:12of the argument right in terms of the
- 00:50:14meaning of the signs speaks of their
- 00:50:17more spiritual significance right
- 00:50:20because you do have the outward rights
- 00:50:22that are quite different the externality
- 00:50:24of it is quite different it's obviously
- 00:50:26circum vision of a male and water
- 00:50:28baptism are quite different uh
- 00:50:30externally yet they have the same kind
- 00:50:31of spiritual underpinning of it and the
- 00:50:35three sort of ways that they link this
- 00:50:37spiritual meaning with circumcision and
- 00:50:39baptism is that right here's three ways
- 00:50:42at the heart of the abrahamic Covenant
- 00:50:43indeed the Covenant of Grace is God Is
- 00:50:45Our God right the Covenant formula I
- 00:50:47will be your God you will be my people
- 00:50:49so what does circum and signify that
- 00:50:51that's true right we've been brought
- 00:50:53into the Covenant God is our God we are
- 00:50:56his people people that's true of
- 00:50:58circumcision that's true of baptism
- 00:51:00right another area is that circumcision
- 00:51:01as a physical act signifies the removal
- 00:51:05of defilement of sin right so it has
- 00:51:08even under this view here circumcision
- 00:51:11is typological of it's speaking forward
- 00:51:14it's pointing to the need for a new
- 00:51:17heart right and so all of them will
- 00:51:19argue circumcision as a physical act
- 00:51:21signifies that one needs spiritual
- 00:51:24circumcision of heart right and that's
- 00:51:25picked up very strongly right so
- 00:51:28circumcision is a physical act that
- 00:51:29brings one into the community and it
- 00:51:32also says you need more than this right
- 00:51:35and so that's part of its significance
- 00:51:38that's what it's signifying and the same
- 00:51:40thing is true of baptism they will argue
- 00:51:41right baptism is an outward sign that
- 00:51:44one is brought in the community and it
- 00:51:45signifies then that you need to have
- 00:51:48faith you need to believe right it does
- 00:51:51not necessarily signify that
- 00:51:54regeneration has taken place
- 00:51:57now that's crucial right and that will
- 00:51:59be a major major point of contention as
- 00:52:02to what does actually baptism signify in
- 00:52:04the New Testament right so if they're
- 00:52:07similar circumcision brings men in the
- 00:52:10community baptism brings men into the
- 00:52:11community they signify you need to have
- 00:52:14more than this the promises of God have
- 00:52:17been placed upon you right and you need
- 00:52:19to believe it doesn't automatically
- 00:52:21regenerate so both of them point to the
- 00:52:24need for some kind of work of God in the
- 00:52:28individual to bring them to saving faith
- 00:52:30and so on it does not affect it or does
- 00:52:32not guarantee that that has happened
- 00:52:34that's why one could become a covenant
- 00:52:35breaker right and third then
- 00:52:38circumcision right is This Promise
- 00:52:41that's placed upon us so often Romans
- 00:52:44411 you know Abraham is circumcised the
- 00:52:47Seal of his righteousness well in some
- 00:52:49sense obviously he had true Faith right
- 00:52:51there yet when it's placed upon all
- 00:52:54those thereafter it's the Seal of the
- 00:52:56promise the promises of God are true of
- 00:52:57you you need to believe they're resting
- 00:53:00upon you right so baptism then signifies
- 00:53:03that God's promises on the individual uh
- 00:53:06and so on but it does not say and it
- 00:53:09does not necessarily guarantee that they
- 00:53:11are a true regenerate believing
- 00:53:14individual right now where it gets a
- 00:53:16little fuzzy here is when you have U
- 00:53:19those who came outside of Christian
- 00:53:21homes who hear the gospel and they are
- 00:53:25now baptized they're brought into the
- 00:53:27church not as infants but they're
- 00:53:29brought in as believing adults right
- 00:53:33this is where sometimes I think in the
- 00:53:35infant view the pedal Baptist view it's
- 00:53:37almost like you have two different kinds
- 00:53:38of baptism here but it's really not they
- 00:53:39do not want that they still want to say
- 00:53:42with that believing adult as they
- 00:53:44receive the sign that it's still the
- 00:53:45sign and seal of promises placed upon
- 00:53:47them it just happens in their case that
- 00:53:49they are then Believers right uh but
- 00:53:51they're still not wanting to say that it
- 00:53:54actually signifies
- 00:53:56that they are regenerate and so on it
- 00:53:58points to the promises of God placed on
- 00:54:00the need for that right so this is then
- 00:54:04the cenal
- 00:54:06continuity of the view and as they then
- 00:54:08work this through the Bible right as I
- 00:54:10said there's no explicit reference to
- 00:54:12infant baptism in the New Testament yet
- 00:54:14this overall argument from old to new
- 00:54:18carries forward we see no specific abreg
- 00:54:21of the genealogical principle the
- 00:54:23household principle because of the unity
- 00:54:25of the Covenant Grace the similarity of
- 00:54:27Israel Church therefore as
- 00:54:31Warfield as we go back to that uh
- 00:54:33initial uh quote where with I had with
- 00:54:36Warfield that if God placed right God
- 00:54:39established his church in the days of
- 00:54:40Abraham put children into it they must
- 00:54:42remain there until he puts them out he
- 00:54:44has nowhere put them out they are still
- 00:54:46then members of his church and thus
- 00:54:47entitled to its ordinances well that's
- 00:54:49at the heart of the argument right so
- 00:54:52it's a whole Bible argument that has to
- 00:54:54be evaluated and not to say that
- 00:54:57everything I'm very very indebted to
- 00:55:00reformed covenant theology I love to
- 00:55:01consider myself reformed and so on but
- 00:55:04uh you still have to look at aspects of
- 00:55:07it and say does this actually correspond
- 00:55:10fit with what scripture teaches right
- 00:55:12and that's where we'll go and so that's
- 00:55:14giving the argument Tom will then deal
- 00:55:17with the specific texts right which we
- 00:55:19have to do we have to have that ex Jesus
- 00:55:21of these texts right our theology
- 00:55:23grounded in scripture and then come back
- 00:55:25and say all right right is this framed
- 00:55:27is there way of framing the Bible even
- 00:55:30though it's very very helpful does It
- 00:55:32capture the best way to understand how
- 00:55:35God's revelation is given across the
- 00:55:37entire Canon right so all right that is
- 00:55:4010 minute break and we'll start
- 00:55:41precisely
- baptism
- Great Commission
- Covenant of Grace
- infant baptism
- theology
- Israel
