Garis waktu

  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

The video begins with a Happy New Year message and announces the winner of a giveaway, Jacob True Yellow. The host thanks everyone for participating and promises future giveaways. The host addresses a viewer’s request to demonstrate welding techniques specifically starts and stops with 7018 rods in various positions: horizontal, vertical, and overhead. They prepare 3/8 plates in a T joint and plan to use the ESAB 235 IC and 7018-1 prime rods.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:11:35

The host demonstrates a welding technique by explaining the correct way to end and restart the welding process without grinding or losing efficiency. They emphasize creating a crater for easier tie-ins, explain how to maintain the weld pool in vertical positions against gravity, and elaborate on managing overhead welding. The importance of battery finesse using a file is also covered, alongside controlling amperage settings using a 'hot start' setting for smoother weld transition. Throughout, tips are given to help beginners improve proficiency in different welding positions.

Happy New Year everybody so I know
  • 00:00:01
    everybody's been anticipating and wanted
  • 00:00:03
to know who won the giveaway for Santa
  • 00:00:05
mr. mark which includes the eSAB
  • 00:00:07
sentinel the rod oven and the welkom
  • 00:00:09
swag pack so we want to go ahead take a
  • 00:00:10
moment before we start the video to
  • 00:00:12
congratulate Jacob true yellow you are
  • 00:00:15
this year's winner for the giveaway so
  • 00:00:17
if you guys didn't win we definitely
  • 00:00:18
appreciate the support thanks for taking
  • 00:00:20
the time to enter we're gonna be doing
  • 00:00:22
some other giveaways so make sure you
  • 00:00:23
stay tuned and now without further ado
  • 00:00:25
check out this week's video so today we
  • 00:00:28
actually had a viewer request from a guy
  • 00:00:30
by the name of Paul Ruane I'm not sure
  • 00:00:32
if I'm pronouncing that right if I got
  • 00:00:35
it right good on me if not I apologized
  • 00:00:36
so he wanted to know how to do starts
  • 00:00:39
and stops with 7018 in the different
  • 00:00:42
positions so today we're gonna go ahead
  • 00:00:43
    we're gonna cover horizontal vertical
  • 00:00:45
and overhead doing starts and stops with
  • 00:00:47
    70 18s I've got a couple little tips
  • 00:00:49
that that might help you along the way
  • 00:00:51
and some things that you may not have
  • 00:00:53
thought about or some things you may
  • 00:00:54
have seen before and you just need a
  • 00:00:56
refresher on so we're gonna go ahead and
  • 00:00:57
get into it so I already have some 3/8
  • 00:01:00
plates prepped in a T joint we're just
  • 00:01:01
gonna go ahead and run a couple starts
  • 00:01:03
and stops throughout here and then we'll
  • 00:01:04
go ahead hit it in the vertical and the
  • 00:01:06
overhead position so for flat I'm gonna
  • 00:01:08
run about or I'm sorry for the
  • 00:01:09
horizontal T joint I have here I'm gonna
  • 00:01:11
run that at about 125 amps we're using
  • 00:01:14
the the eSAB 235 IC and we're going to
  • 00:01:17
use some of these new eSAB 70 18-1 prime
  • 00:01:20
rods with the graphite tips that are
  • 00:01:22
really great for arc initiation so let's
  • 00:01:24
    go ahead get into it
  • 00:01:32
    [Music]
  • 00:01:36
okay so once I terminate a weld I
  • 00:01:38
typically flick the electrode what that
  • 00:01:40
does that little glowing ball that's on
  • 00:01:42
the end there little molten metal ball
  • 00:01:43
that'll kind of fly off and that'll
  • 00:01:45
leave me with a bare exposed electrode
  • 00:01:47
so instead of taking the electrode out
  • 00:01:49
each time and smacking it on a table or
  • 00:01:51
the concrete or dragging it across
  • 00:01:53
something as soon as you get done
  • 00:01:55
welding before you even lift your hood
  • 00:01:56
up just just flick it real quick you'll
  • 00:01:58
knock that ball off and then you'll
  • 00:02:00
expose the bare core end of the
  • 00:02:01
electrode so that's like a little tip
  • 00:02:03
now the rods ready to go back into
  • 00:02:05
action so I don't have to smack it on
  • 00:02:07
the table or do anything fancy with it
  • 00:02:09
the core is already exposed and then I
  • 00:02:11
can go right back in and do my restart
  • 00:02:13
okay so you might have noticed in the
  • 00:02:15
arc shot when I was coming to an end I
  • 00:02:17
whipped out so you kind of want to do
  • 00:02:19
that you want it to be a nice surprise
  • 00:02:20
motion what I want to do is I want to
  • 00:02:23
leave a decent-sized crater in here
  • 00:02:25
that's going to give me something to tie
  • 00:02:27
back into now if I would have slowed
  • 00:02:28
down and filled the crater in and then
  • 00:02:30
stopped and try to tie back into that
  • 00:02:32
you're not going to do it very
  • 00:02:33
    successfully you'd actually have to
  • 00:02:34
grind that out a little bit but to avoid
  • 00:02:36
that step if you just whip out you leave
  • 00:02:38
a nice little dish in there to accept
  • 00:02:40
your restore we're gonna go ahead and do
  • 00:02:43
that restart when I do it I'm gonna
  • 00:02:45
start right about here at the very end
  • 00:02:46
of this crater I'll initiate the arc
  • 00:02:48
here travel back to where the edge of my
  • 00:02:51
puddle flows where I terminate it
  • 00:02:53
originally and just do a slow steady
  • 00:02:55
just do a slow pause for a second and
  • 00:02:57
then start moving forward just like I
  • 00:02:59
    never stopped
  • 00:03:08
okay so as you can see right here is the
  • 00:03:12
    tie-in there's pretty good tie-in that
  • 00:03:16
having that crater there allowed me to
  • 00:03:18
fill metal on top of it and kind of lap
  • 00:03:21
it in there without having a cold lap
  • 00:03:23
and be able to burn into it and just
  • 00:03:24
continue on let's go ahead throw this up
  • 00:03:27
in the vertical position we'll do it
  • 00:03:28
again switching the vertical I went
  • 00:03:34
ahead and draw my answer to about 110
  • 00:03:58
    [Music]
  • 00:04:07
    [Applause]
  • 00:04:23
looks like good a spot as any
  • 00:04:24
determinate so once again I'm not gonna
  • 00:04:26
slow down I'm gonna keep that same speed
  • 00:04:30
and once I'm ready I'm just gonna whip
  • 00:04:32
right out of the puddle this should
  • 00:04:34
leave me a nice little divot all right
  • 00:04:36
let's go and clean this up and any time
  • 00:04:45
when working on like deep grooves Phila
  • 00:04:47
Wells or anything like that I like these
  • 00:04:49
wire brushes they've got that tapered
  • 00:04:51
brush in there so I can get all up on
  • 00:04:54
the toes of the weld right back in the
  • 00:04:56
corner you know if you've got a square
  • 00:04:58
cut brush it's hard to get into those
  • 00:04:59
areas you want to make sure everything's
  • 00:05:01
clean when you're doing this stuff that
  • 00:05:04
way you don't run in ferocity make sure
  • 00:05:06
you don't have any slag stuck in that
  • 00:05:08
crater where you're planning on doing
  • 00:05:09
your tie-in just as when we ran the
  • 00:05:13
tie-in in the the horizontal position
  • 00:05:14
I'm gonna start probably just a little
  • 00:05:17
bit higher because now I have gravity
  • 00:05:19
    working against me
  • 00:05:20
so I'm probably gonna start about a
  • 00:05:21
quarter inch away from end of this
  • 00:05:24
crater here so I'll start about a
  • 00:05:25
quarter inch up I'm gonna strike off
  • 00:05:27
right in this area come down and touch
  • 00:05:29
it now one other thing you can do is you
  • 00:05:31
can start up here and just if you're not
  • 00:05:33
    comfortable with welding yet you're
  • 00:05:35
still new to it and just drag down once
  • 00:05:38
you reach this spot here kind of pull
  • 00:05:39
back a little bit touch off I usually do
  • 00:05:42
like a little dip motion and then carry
  • 00:05:44
on like I never stopped so but if you're
  • 00:05:47
you're pretty familiar with welding you
  • 00:05:49
can touch off right here right in that
  • 00:05:50
area but like I said about a quarter
  • 00:05:52
inch above that crater bump back into it
  • 00:05:54
make it a little loop and then just
  • 00:05:56
start moving up okay so again right
  • 00:06:03
here's our tie-in get a good tie in
  • 00:06:05
there's no cold lap there's no overlap
  • 00:06:07
everything laid in nice and easy
  • 00:06:09
nice and smooth that's kind of exactly
  • 00:06:11
how you want it remember just start just
  • 00:06:12
above strike down once the edge of your
  • 00:06:15
puddle covers the top of that other
  • 00:06:17
piece of the crater then you're just
  • 00:06:19
gonna start moving like you never
  • 00:06:20
stopped let's go ahead and hit the
  • 00:06:22
overhead alright so now we're in the
  • 00:06:25
overhead position or 4f4 being the
  • 00:06:28
overhead position F being a Phillip
  • 00:06:30
we're gonna go ahead and do the same
  • 00:06:31
thing I'm just gonna strike in here I'm
  • 00:06:33
gonna weld about I'm about a third to
  • 00:06:35
    half again
  • 00:06:36
we'll go ahead terminate I'll whip right
  • 00:06:37
out of that puddle and then I'll go
  • 00:06:40
ahead on the the restart I'll go ahead
  • 00:06:42
and use this this same rod we'll just
  • 00:06:44
kind of stopped prematurely or if I
  • 00:06:46
don't have enough rod we'll burn
  • 00:06:47
something down that way I can show you
  • 00:06:49
how to restart with a an electrode
  • 00:06:51
that's already been used especially for
  • 00:06:53
those of you that are out there buying
  • 00:06:54
your own electrodes you're not working
  • 00:06:55
for a company I know on a lot of job
  • 00:06:57
sites scene just piles you know people
  • 00:06:59
you know as soon as that rod sticks or
  • 00:07:01
    something
  • 00:07:01
they break it free and even though it's
  • 00:07:03
so good rod they'll go Chuck in the
  • 00:07:04
waste bucket well if you have to pay for
  • 00:07:06
your own welding rods that stuff adds up
  • 00:07:07
real quick so I'll go ahead and I'll
  • 00:07:09
show you a little trick once we get you
  • 00:07:11
know once we go and make that
  • 00:07:12
termination and then we'll start off
  • 00:07:13
with a that same rod it's twisting it
  • 00:07:18
overhead I went ahead and bump my amps
  • 00:07:20
back up to 118 I like the world a little
  • 00:07:23
hotter in the overhead then I do in
  • 00:07:26
vertical and just a little colder that I
  • 00:07:30
    run in flat
  • 00:07:35
just like a good spot we'll go ahead and
  • 00:07:37
get ready to terminate member terminate
  • 00:07:40
    on your own terms
  • 00:07:41
don't let the rod dictate it just flip
  • 00:07:44
right out of it so here's that rod so
  • 00:07:47
what you can do you can smack it on a
  • 00:07:48
table or a piece of concrete drag it
  • 00:07:50
back and forth but what you do is you
  • 00:07:51
end up risking cracking that that flux
  • 00:07:53
that's on the outside you don't want to
  • 00:07:55
tear that flux up so just take you a
  • 00:07:56
file and you can just clean that back
  • 00:07:59
off and you get down to bare metal now
  • 00:08:02
another thing you can do is file this
  • 00:08:05
down so you get like somewhat of a point
  • 00:08:07
on there especially if you're working in
  • 00:08:09
a Filat or a tight gap this will help
  • 00:08:11
you ignite a lot easier yeah it seems
  • 00:08:14
like a little bit more work probably
  • 00:08:15
useless to a lot of people but if you're
  • 00:08:17
just starting out this is gonna help you
  • 00:08:19
get that to a little point you know at a
  • 00:08:20
45 degree angle you can get in there and
  • 00:08:22
get into that corner that weld so you're
  • 00:08:24
definitely gonna make contact with metal
  • 00:08:26
in a groove weld you can you know remain
  • 00:08:28
pretty much flat and just you know tap
  • 00:08:30
it and touch off and then ignite that
  • 00:08:32
way but like in a tight Phillip you know
  • 00:08:35
if you've got a little point on that rod
  • 00:08:37
it's gonna help you out quite a bit
  • 00:08:39
so now I've got that nice little crater
  • 00:08:42
in there I'm just gonna do the exact
  • 00:08:43
same thing I'll start right here at the
  • 00:08:45
edge of that crater maybe probably about
  • 00:08:47
I don't know maybe quarter inch in front
  • 00:08:50
of it I'll strike there and whip back to
  • 00:08:52
it and then I'll wait till you know it
  • 00:08:55
ties in right here and then I'll just
  • 00:08:57
    move forward
  • 00:08:57
the biggest problem a lot of people make
  • 00:08:59
is they don't go back far enough or they
  • 00:09:01
go back too far you go back too far
  • 00:09:03
you're gonna get a lap in there you have
  • 00:09:05
a real thick part if you don't go back
  • 00:09:07
far enough you're gonna have a
  • 00:09:08
separation between the two welds I
  • 00:09:09
typically recommend you know get in here
  • 00:09:11
brace yourself up maybe use two hands
  • 00:09:13
and just kind of take that welding rod
  • 00:09:15
and strike off use those two hands I
  • 00:09:17
mean there's nothing wrong with brace
  • 00:09:18
yourself propping yourself up and just
  • 00:09:21
you know just making life a little bit
  • 00:09:22
easier so you can start right there
  • 00:09:23
strike it and then move back forward and
  • 00:09:25
then just get that hand out of the way
  • 00:09:27
so tie it in pretty good I don't have a
  • 00:09:29
big lump in there don't have a big
  • 00:09:30
separation in there it looks like a very
  • 00:09:32
smooth uniform transition which is what
  • 00:09:34
    I'm looking for
  • 00:09:36
and then we just carry it on out there
  • 00:09:38
okay ladies and gentlemen and Paul I
  • 00:09:40
hope that answers your question hope
  • 00:09:42
that helps some of you guys out along
  • 00:09:43
the way although it may seem pretty
  • 00:09:45
basic to a lot of people you know we
  • 00:09:47
have a lot of people that are just
  • 00:09:48
    learning how to
  • 00:09:49
here so it's a very you know informative
  • 00:09:51
way of approaching things one thing I
  • 00:09:54
highly recommend is if you're in Welding
  • 00:09:55
school or you know you're at home in the
  • 00:09:57
garage practicing get yourself like a
  • 00:10:00
six or eight inch piece of 3/8 plate
  • 00:10:03
right gives you some 70 18 rods and just
  • 00:10:06
run try to run two to three inches stop
  • 00:10:09
whip out clean everything up and then
  • 00:10:12
try to tie back in and just do a I think
  • 00:10:16
Bob made a video a while back first
  • 00:10:18
rules of arc welding is welding a
  • 00:10:20
straight line run that same practice
  • 00:10:23
that he talked about but you know do
  • 00:10:25
this with starts and stops as well go
  • 00:10:27
back in there and once you get good in
  • 00:10:28
the flat position where you really can't
  • 00:10:29
    tell where that transition occurred
  • 00:10:31
moving to horizontal same thing flat
  • 00:10:33
plate then go into vertical then
  • 00:10:35
overhead and then practice on Philips
  • 00:10:37
and then practice on grooves and just
  • 00:10:39
you know get into the habit of all those
  • 00:10:40
different well you know positions and
  • 00:10:42
the angles and stuff you have to work
  • 00:10:44
with and try doing your starts and stops
  • 00:10:47
in all those different positions and
  • 00:10:48
kind of see what's works best for you
  • 00:10:50
one thing I forgot to mention is crank
  • 00:10:52
up your hot start a little bit every
  • 00:10:54
machines gonna be a little bit different
  • 00:10:55
I think I've read about 8% hot start on
  • 00:10:58
this one and that's just going to give
  • 00:10:59
you a momentary increase in amperage at
  • 00:11:01
the initiation of that arc so let's say
  • 00:11:04
it's at a for all intents and purposes
  • 00:11:07
    let's say we're at a hundred amps or a
  • 00:11:10
hundred amps if I run a percent hot
  • 00:11:12
start that's gonna kick me up to 108
  • 00:11:14
amps okay it's just eight percent of
  • 00:11:16
whatever you're welding on or you know
  • 00:11:17
if you run ten percent you know it's
  • 00:11:19
gonna pick you up ten percent higher
  • 00:11:20
than the current you you set your
  • 00:11:21
machine at and what that's gonna do
  • 00:11:23
that's going to give you a little bit
  • 00:11:24
more oomph at the start to help that
  • 00:11:27
weld lay a little bit flatter inside
  • 00:11:28
that crater hope you guys enjoyed the
  • 00:11:31
video and until next time make every
  • 00:11:33
    well better than your last
