Il mercatu di carte classiche e moderne hè cumplettamente diversu in termini di valutazione. what if I told you that a base set
  • 00:00:01
unlimited Charizard in near mint to Mint
  • 00:00:04
    Condition sells for significantly more
  • 00:00:06
in a PSA slab than the same grade with
  • 00:00:09
its competitors cgc or bgs however if we
  • 00:00:12
took a modern card like the Umbreon from
  • 00:00:15
evolving skies in the top grade offered
  • 00:00:17
by these three competing companies the
  • 00:00:19
bgs Black Label 10 out sells the PSA 10
  • 00:00:23
    by over
  • 00:00:25
400% in an era of rapidly changing
  • 00:00:27
market dynamics knowing how to assess
  • 00:00:30
best condition and where to grade your
  • 00:00:31
cards has never been more important
  • 00:00:34
today I invite you to join me as we
  • 00:00:35
attempt to demystify card grading here

  • 00:00:45
2024 hey everybody what's up from
  • 00:00:47
Pokémon Classics reminding you all that
  • 00:00:49
the classics never go out of style it's
  • 00:00:52
2024 and a lot has changed over the last
  • 00:00:54
few years when it comes to grading cards
  • 00:00:56
now in this video I wanted to start by
  • 00:00:57
talking about some of the updates for
  • 00:00:59
tending to the big three grading
  • 00:01:01
companies PSA cgc and bgs next we'll
  • 00:01:05
talk a little bit about the optimization
  • 00:01:07
process of determining which company to
  • 00:01:08
send cards to and finally we'll explore
  • 00:01:11
which cards to send to get graded in the
  • 00:01:13
first place because ultimately there is
  • 00:01:15
a bit of a cost benefit analysis that
  • 00:01:17
needs to happen when making that
  • 00:01:19
decision anyway guys let's roll into it
  • 00:01:22
first let's talk about grading prices
  • 00:01:24
now back during the pandemic companies
  • 00:01:26
like PSA shuttered their doors and made
  • 00:01:28
    grading inaccessible to the Mass
  • 00:01:30
however since then over the last year or
  • 00:01:32
so prices have normalized we're seeing
  • 00:01:34
more competition in the graded Market
  • 00:01:36
space currently PSA charges $4.99 per
  • 00:01:39
card if using their bulk service cgc
  • 00:01:42
only charges $11 per card and bgs is
  • 00:01:44
    charging
  • 00:01:45
$14.95 now you can actually get better
  • 00:01:47
prices than these because PSA is
  • 00:01:49
offering specials every month to their
  • 00:01:51
members and I've seen them go as low as
  • 00:01:54
12.99 meanwhile cgc has an elite tier
  • 00:01:57
    through a subscription service that's
  • 00:01:59
    offering $8 80 per card so it's a fairly
  • 00:02:02
competitive market and I think this is
  • 00:02:04
opening the door for a lot of
  • 00:02:05
    prospective collectors and would be
  • 00:02:07
greaters out there and speaking of
  • 00:02:10
accessibility there's been a number of
  • 00:02:11
    new opportunities for people that
  • 00:02:13
    traditionally haven't been sending their
  • 00:02:15
cards in for grading on their own
  • 00:02:17
    recently PSA announced a partnership
  • 00:02:19
    with GameStop where individuals can
  • 00:02:21
submit their cards through GameStop and
  • 00:02:23
    that's only for a dollar more they're
  • 00:02:25
only charging $14.99 per card with no
  • 00:02:27
    minimum and it's advertises A4 5-day
  • 00:02:30
turnaround similarly cgc also has an
  • 00:02:33
    expedited service through Fanatics you
  • 00:02:35
send raw Cards into Fanatics they have
  • 00:02:37
people on staff that are able to turn
  • 00:02:40
around cards at just $9 per card and
  • 00:02:42
they're hoping to get that service down
  • 00:02:44
to just 24 hours as a turnaround time
  • 00:02:46
though I've been told it's closer to
  • 00:02:48
about 3 days either way this makes
  • 00:02:51
grading so much more accessible to the
  • 00:02:52
masses particularly for people that have
  • 00:02:54
never graded before or maybe are a
  • 00:02:56
little bit intimidated to do so removing
  • 00:02:59
that barrier of of Entry of course this
  • 00:03:01
begs the question which Grading Company
  • 00:03:03
should you be sending your cards to now
  • 00:03:05
this is a highly subjective question
  • 00:03:07
with a number of different factors at
  • 00:03:08
work but generally I Look to look at it
  • 00:03:10
in these three factors when it comes to
  • 00:03:12
market share and the majority of
  • 00:03:14
    collectors their PSA collectors so
  • 00:03:16
liquidity and resale value is often more
  • 00:03:19
closely attached and aligned to PSA
  • 00:03:21
especially for those cards that are in
  • 00:03:23
that near mint to Mint range the eights
  • 00:03:25
the nines this is the Direction I Would
  • 00:03:26
urge people to go on the other hand cgc
  • 00:03:29
has the lowest cost point to entry and
  • 00:03:32
the quickest turnaround time and those
  • 00:03:33
can both be very attractive to resellers
  • 00:03:36
and collectors as well finally Becket is
  • 00:03:38
the only one of these companies that
  • 00:03:40
offers subgrades there's an element of
  • 00:03:42
transparency there it's also a very
  • 00:03:44
thick and premium feeling slab also the
  • 00:03:47
Black Label premium really can't be beat
  • 00:03:50
but we'll get to that a bit more here in
  • 00:03:52
    a little
  • 00:03:53
bit regardless of which one of these
  • 00:03:55
    companies you personally prefer
  • 00:03:57
condition is everything now I've made a
  • 00:04:00
whole video breaking down conditions and
  • 00:04:01
the grading guidelines for PSA with
  • 00:04:04
detailed examples and pictures of each
  • 00:04:05
one so if that's something you're
  • 00:04:07
interested in learning more about I'll
  • 00:04:08
leave a link to the video down in the
  • 00:04:10
description below as I alluded to
  • 00:04:12
earlier every one of these grading
  • 00:04:13
    companies applies their grading scale
  • 00:04:15
slightly differently but one thing that
  • 00:04:17
they all have in common is they all take
  • 00:04:19
    those four grading criteria averages
  • 00:04:21
them out and then applies One Singular
  • 00:04:23
numeric score for a grade PSA probably
  • 00:04:26
has the simplest grading scale and
  • 00:04:28
although PSA does offer Half Point
  • 00:04:30
grades they're seldom used and so are
  • 00:04:32
not really worth considering on the
  • 00:04:34
other hand we have Becket which offers
  • 00:04:36
two different bgs 10s a black label 10
  • 00:04:39
and a pristine Gold Label 10 and they
  • 00:04:41
    consider gem mint their
  • 00:04:43
9.5 finally we have cgc which also has
  • 00:04:46
two tens a pristine Gold Label 10 and
  • 00:04:48
then a 10 gem mint and cgc makes
  • 00:04:51
extensive use of the 0 five grades and
  • 00:04:54
in that way it's perhaps the more
  • 00:04:55
nuanced and complex of the three grading
  • 00:04:58
systems now a quick disclaimer but in my
  • 00:05:00
    own personal experience when mixing
  • 00:05:02
    these grades together and categorizing
  • 00:05:04
them I often think of them in terms of
  • 00:05:06
tiers and at the very top of Mount
  • 00:05:08
Everest in its own tier would be the
  • 00:05:10
bgs1 Black Label pristine grade these
  • 00:05:13
are supposed to be absolutely Flawless
  • 00:05:15
and they're incredibly scarce on the
  • 00:05:16
market and thus command a very high
  • 00:05:18
premium my next category would be in
  • 00:05:20
green and these are cards I would
  • 00:05:22
consider gem Min and often these ones
  • 00:05:24
have similar price points as well as
  • 00:05:26
populations and conditions in the yellow
  • 00:05:28
are cards that I would consider mint and
  • 00:05:30
these ones are virtually Flawless but
  • 00:05:32
maybe they exhibit some small flaw like
  • 00:05:34
slightly off-centered or a DOT or two of
  • 00:05:36
edge wear on the backside then finally
  • 00:05:39
in red are cards that I would consider
  • 00:05:40
near mint now this is perhaps the hot
  • 00:05:43
take of this categorization system but I
  • 00:05:45
would actually consider a lot of PSA 6s
  • 00:05:48
and sevens to be the standard
  • 00:05:50
    conditional equivalent of the eights
  • 00:05:52
from the other two grading companies you
  • 00:05:54
guys can come at me in the comments but
  • 00:05:55
that's just my experience so to look at
  • 00:05:57
it another way as a continuum this is
  • 00:06:00
how I would personally break it down
  • 00:06:02
with the bgs1 Black Label pristine all
  • 00:06:04
the way on one end and then working our
  • 00:06:06
    way through all the different
  • 00:06:07
categorizations of mint and then ending
  • 00:06:09
at the near mint to Mint PSA 8 anything
  • 00:06:12
below that I would consider below a near
  • 00:06:15
mint to Mint grade of course it is worth
  • 00:06:17
noting that as we work our way through
  • 00:06:19
the upper echelons of mint condition
  • 00:06:21
    that the differences become so
  • 00:06:22
    negligible that at sometimes the
  • 00:06:24
difference between one grade and another
  • 00:06:26
are indistinguishable and I think it's
  • 00:06:28
important that we Al take these other
  • 00:06:30
two factors into consideration the first
  • 00:06:32
being that there are huge fluctuations
  • 00:06:34
in gem rates between vintage cards and
  • 00:06:36
    modern cards they're just built
  • 00:06:38
    differently and come with different
  • 00:06:40
    conditional issues in their print
  • 00:06:41
production having said that even within
  • 00:06:44
certain eras of Pokemon there are still
  • 00:06:46
different quality issues we might take a
  • 00:06:48
look at print lines being something that
  • 00:06:50
PSA often hammers more harshly than cgc
  • 00:06:53
does and you see that reflected in the
  • 00:06:55
population reports of many of the Neo
  • 00:06:57
    Era cards that are particularly
  • 00:06:59
susceptible to print lines on the other
  • 00:07:01
hand we can take a look at something
  • 00:07:02
like the jungle set which was very
  • 00:07:04
notable for chipping on the front edges
  • 00:07:07
and that's something that PSA doesn't
  • 00:07:08
penalize as heavily as cgc does you'll
  • 00:07:11
see that in the population reports as
  • 00:07:13
well by the way if you're interested in
  • 00:07:15
comparing gem rates between PSA and cgc
  • 00:07:18
    and how each company prioritizes
  • 00:07:20
conditional issues check out this video
  • 00:07:22
where I run through all of the data from
  • 00:07:24
baset through Neo Destiny it's pretty
  • 00:07:26
    fascinating to
  • 00:07:28
    consider let's let's take a look at a
  • 00:07:30
pair of case studies a modern card the
  • 00:07:32
moon Bon from evolving skies and the
  • 00:07:34
unlimited Bas at Charizard a vintage
  • 00:07:36
card when comparing the top grade
  • 00:07:38
    available from each Grading Company
  • 00:07:40
you'll notice that the bgs Black Label
  • 00:07:42
10 absolutely blows the competitors out
  • 00:07:44
of the water earning over 400% the value
  • 00:07:48
of the PSA 10 now the PSA 10 sold for
  • 00:07:50
    $1,400 and that's a really good price
  • 00:07:52
for a modern card especially one that
  • 00:07:54
has this high of a population but the
  • 00:07:57
    bgs1 sold for 7,600
  • 00:08:00
$21 now cgc top grade the pristine 10
  • 00:08:03
also outpaced the PSA 10 at
  • 00:08:07
$1,750 which is exactly 25% more than
  • 00:08:10
the PSA 10 now interestingly these
  • 00:08:13
aren't the only grades that outsold the
  • 00:08:14
PSA 10 the bgs1 pristine Gold Label also
  • 00:08:18
sold for a bit more at
  • 00:08:20
$1,575 and the cgc 10 came in a little
  • 00:08:24
bit under the PSA 10 at
  • 00:08:27
$1,128 so you can already see how this
  • 00:08:29
Continuum that I showcased earlier is
  • 00:08:31
playing out when it comes that modern
  • 00:08:33
Moon Bon from evolving Skies now to be
  • 00:08:36
fair these were all individual listings
  • 00:08:38
that sold recently when scraping data
  • 00:08:40
from the last few months and taking
  • 00:08:41
overall averages this is what the
  • 00:08:43
categories end up looking like and you
  • 00:08:45
can see how the four tiers end up
  • 00:08:47
emerging organically with the bgs Black
  • 00:08:50
Label 10 pristine selling for $7500 to
  • 00:08:53
$9,000 it really is in a whole world all
  • 00:08:55
of its own then in the green we have
  • 00:08:57
what I would consider the gem mint copy
  • 00:08:59
selling for a bit over $1,000 and for as
  • 00:09:02
much as $2,000 in that cgc 10 pristine
  • 00:09:05
and bgs 10 pristine as well the Gold
  • 00:09:08
Label one as we work our way down though
  • 00:09:10
one of the interesting things to note is
  • 00:09:12
that the PSA 6 and 7 seems to be about
  • 00:09:15
comparable price to the cgc and bgs 8s
  • 00:09:18
of course though this is just a modern
  • 00:09:20
example we'll turn our attention over to
  • 00:09:22
something vintage now the Bas out
  • 00:09:24
    unlimited Charizard is an interesting
  • 00:09:25
one to consider because it's one of the
  • 00:09:27
most desirable and recognizable cards in
  • 00:09:29
vintage collecting in a PSA 10 it sold
  • 00:09:32
    for between $9,000 and
  • 00:09:34
$111,000 and there really is no premium
  • 00:09:36
there for cgc t0s even in the cgc 10
  • 00:09:39
pristine a copy was sold in 2024 for
  • 00:09:42
$9,600 which is about comparable price
  • 00:09:45
to the PSA 10 copies now bgs is an
  • 00:09:48
interesting story because there are so
  • 00:09:49
few copies available in bgs 10 that I
  • 00:09:52
have really no idea how to accurately
  • 00:09:54
assess it in fact I couldn't find a
  • 00:09:56
single sale for the bgs 10 Black Label
  • 00:09:59
and when it comes to the pristine Gold
  • 00:10:01
Label there's only one sale I could find
  • 00:10:03
and that was from 2017 and it sold for $
  • 00:10:07
4,863 now keep in mind this was long
  • 00:10:10
before the pandemic boom when vintage
  • 00:10:12
cards and Pokemon as a whole exploded so
  • 00:10:15
I would have to think that either
  • 00:10:17
version of that card in bgs 10 would
  • 00:10:19
sell for significantly more than the PSA
  • 00:10:22
10 copy does another thing that I think
  • 00:10:24
is interesting is that the cgc 10 gem
  • 00:10:26
mint grade and the bgs 9.5 gem mint
  • 00:10:29
grade both fall off incredibly hard when
  • 00:10:31
compared to the PSA 10 now I think
  • 00:10:34
there's a couple reasons for this the
  • 00:10:35
first being that PSA is widely collected
  • 00:10:37
and more established within the Vintage
  • 00:10:39
Market and Charizard has a very low gem
  • 00:10:41
rate especially compared to the Umbreon
  • 00:10:44
from evolving Skies that we just looked
  • 00:10:45
at the Charizard is much more scarce for
  • 00:10:48
example Charizard has a 6% gem rate
  • 00:10:51
meaning there's only 464 gem Min copies
  • 00:10:54
    out of 51,27386
  • 00:10:59
has an 81% gem mint rating with
  • 00:11:02
    8,536 copies available out of
  • 00:11:06
    11,197 copies graded it's a pretty big
  • 00:11:09
difference just for fun I also looked up
  • 00:11:11
the gem rate of the cgc 10 gem mint card
  • 00:11:14
    and that's at 18% with 213 copies
  • 00:11:17
    available out of
  • 00:11:19
11,563 cards graded so I guess what I'm
  • 00:11:22
trying to say is that the preference of
  • 00:11:24
the buyer pool combined with the total
  • 00:11:25
amount of copies available or its
  • 00:11:27
scarcity has a tremend mendous impact on
  • 00:11:30
the cost of the card the other thing
  • 00:11:32
that I think is interesting is that
  • 00:11:33
copies that are near mint to Mint sell
  • 00:11:35
significantly better in PSA than they do
  • 00:11:38
in respective slabs the PSA 8 sold
  • 00:11:40
recently for $650 at auction meanwhile a
  • 00:11:43
cc8 copy sold for $44 which is only 62%
  • 00:11:48
of the PSA price also the bgs was also
  • 00:11:51
recently sold for 66% of the price or
  • 00:11:54
$430 so there is a bit of an advantage
  • 00:11:57
there especially for those near mint
  • 00:11:58
plus cars cards to go with
  • 00:12:01
PSA so here's what I might recommend for
  • 00:12:04
allocating your cards if you have a
  • 00:12:06
modern card that is a particularly
  • 00:12:08
strong gem mint candidate you might be
  • 00:12:10
willing to play the bgs lottery going
  • 00:12:11
for that black label grade now it is
  • 00:12:14
highly unlikely that a card is going to
  • 00:12:15
earn that grade but if it does there
  • 00:12:17
could be a massive premium there however
  • 00:12:20
if it doesn't earn that grade keep in
  • 00:12:22
mind there might be less liquidity
  • 00:12:23
selling it than there would be with a
  • 00:12:25
company like PSA if you have a card
  • 00:12:28
that's gem mint but on the weaker side
  • 00:12:30
maybe due to centering or like one flaw
  • 00:12:32
on the backside a little dot of edge
  • 00:12:34
wear that's when I'd consider PSA or cgc
  • 00:12:37
cgc pristine 10 still offers a premium
  • 00:12:40
and is a bit more achievable than the
  • 00:12:41
Black Label 10 of bgs having said that a
  • 00:12:45
PSA 9 or 10 are still very liquid cards
  • 00:12:48
and do come with a premium of their own
  • 00:12:50
so those aren't bad options anyway you
  • 00:12:52
slice it I would recommend checking the
  • 00:12:54
prices and the populations first as
  • 00:12:56
    you're running this calculation for
  • 00:12:58
cards that are meant nine candidates
  • 00:13:00
again I would recommend going with cgc
  • 00:13:02
or PSA PSA does treat Hollow surfaces
  • 00:13:05
and dents more harshly especially for
  • 00:13:07
vintage cards and print lines in
  • 00:13:09
particular than cgc does something to be
  • 00:13:12
aware of on the other hand cgc is often
  • 00:13:15
more harsh on the edges as we saw with
  • 00:13:17
the jungle set earlier finally for cards
  • 00:13:20
that are on the threshold of
  • 00:13:21
gradeability we're talking ones that are
  • 00:13:22
near mint plus I would generally send
  • 00:13:25
those to PSA cards that are likely going
  • 00:13:27
to get a seven or an eight are are
  • 00:13:29
probably going to do better in that PSA
  • 00:13:31
grade than they will in the respective
  • 00:13:33
bgs or cgc grades there is one notable
  • 00:13:36
exception to this PSA is extremely hard
  • 00:13:39
on cards that have small indentations in
  • 00:13:41
them we're not talking like full-on
  • 00:13:43
creases but just a small dent those ones
  • 00:13:45
are going to get instantly a six at best
  • 00:13:48
through PSA and often those will be
  • 00:13:50
graded more favorably through cgc so
  • 00:13:53
just another thing to take into
  • 00:13:54
    consideration if you're looking to
  • 00:13:55
maximize the number on the card itself
  • 00:13:59
before we wrap up this video I wanted to
  • 00:14:00
talk about how do you know which cards
  • 00:14:02
you should grade in the first place well
  • 00:14:04
there are usually four metrics that I
  • 00:14:05
would recommend looking to when making
  • 00:14:07
that determination the first of these is
  • 00:14:09
the condition if your card is below near
  • 00:14:12
Mint Condition it's generally not worth
  • 00:14:13
it to grade unless it's something
  • 00:14:15
    exceptionally valuable you should also
  • 00:14:17
    be aware of populations populations
  • 00:14:19
often influence the desirability of a
  • 00:14:20
card as well of its overall price point
  • 00:14:23
the popularity of the actual Pokémon is
  • 00:14:25
    also something to take into
  • 00:14:26
    consideration certain cards certain
  • 00:14:28
    Pokemon species like Gengar Pikachu
  • 00:14:32
Dragonite Umbreon are going to generally
  • 00:14:34
do well in comparison to some of the
  • 00:14:36
Lesser known variants out there finally
  • 00:14:39
look up valuations this is something
  • 00:14:41
more people need to do there are some
  • 00:14:43
great tools out there for looking up
  • 00:14:44
    market trends researching prices
  • 00:14:47
population data and a whole lot more a
  • 00:14:50
few of the websites I would personally
  • 00:14:51
recommend are for rock hards look at tcg
  • 00:14:54
player and eBay you can look up recently
  • 00:14:56
sold listings to see how much your cards
  • 00:14:58
are currently worth and if there's going
  • 00:14:59
to be any added value to having them
  • 00:15:01
graded for graded cards you can do the
  • 00:15:03
same thing through websites like Pokemon
  • 00:15:05
price.com PSA as well as TCG fish and
  • 00:15:09
pokedata doio the last two of these
  • 00:15:11
    though are particularly important and
  • 00:15:13
    useful especially to collectors out
  • 00:15:15
there that want to get more serious TCG
  • 00:15:17
fish and Pokey data each contain sales
  • 00:15:20
prices Trends graphs as well as ability
  • 00:15:23
to look up population reports and a
  • 00:15:24
whole lot more I can't recommend these
  • 00:15:26
enough I actually did a full video on
  • 00:15:28
these ites and if you want more
  • 00:15:30
information on how they work and what
  • 00:15:31
type of data and market trends they
  • 00:15:33
provide I'll leave a link to my video
  • 00:15:34
down in the description below anyway
  • 00:15:36
guys that's going to wrap it up for this
  • 00:15:38
one I hope this information was useful
  • 00:15:39
to you all and if you're just starting
  • 00:15:41
out grading I wish you all the best of
  • 00:15:43
luck deciding which cards to send and
  • 00:15:45
where to send them to I'm Pokémon
  • 00:15:46
Classics reminding you all that the
  • 00:15:48
classics never go out of style we'll see
  • 00:15:50
you all with the next video till then
  • 00:15:51
stay well and have fun that's what
  • 00:15:53
collecting is all about bye everybody
