  • 00:01:44
great well thank you both we're happy to
  • 00:01:46
be here today thanks for joining us to
  • 00:01:48
learn a little bit more about a business
  • 00:01:50
case for sustainability so this is our
  • 00:01:53
agenda we're going to talk briefly about
  • 00:01:55
the business case give a few examples
  • 00:01:57
I'm going to talk just about some kind
  • 00:01:59
of key definitions and fundamentals of
  • 00:02:02
sustainability I'm going to give you a
  • 00:02:04
few tips for getting started and then
  • 00:02:06
Chris is going to talk about how you can
  • 00:02:08
use the Green Masters program as a tool
  • 00:02:10
if you're in the place where you're
  • 00:02:12
looking to get started and wanting some
  • 00:02:14
support that's a free tool to wsbc
  • 00:02:17
members and then we'll share a little
  • 00:02:20
bit about more about how we can help if
  • 00:02:22
you're in a position and want or need
  • 00:02:24
    some help
  • 00:02:25
so uh give me a second here I'm going to
  • 00:02:28
    launch a poll
  • 00:02:30
    and
  • 00:02:33
    let's see
  • 00:02:43
    maybe there it is
  • 00:02:46
all right so here we are this poll is
  • 00:02:50
really just helping us understand where
  • 00:02:53
you are on your sustainability Journey
  • 00:02:55
so if you wouldn't mind taking a brief
  • 00:02:58
moment go ahead I will read through
  • 00:03:00
those and select I think you can select
  • 00:03:02
more than one if more than one applies
  • 00:03:04
to you but the question is really where
  • 00:03:06
are you in your sustainability Journey
  • 00:03:08
    at your company
  • 00:03:10
um and so the first one is trying to
  • 00:03:11
understand the business case you know
  • 00:03:13
are you still really you know trying to
  • 00:03:16
    figure out what that is
  • 00:03:18
um customers are asking you but you
  • 00:03:20
    don't understand what they're asking
  • 00:03:22
    necessarily or why
  • 00:03:24
um are you starting to implement a few
  • 00:03:26
projects uh you are gathering metrics
  • 00:03:29
or um you may be gathering some metrics
  • 00:03:32
but you need to learn how to integrate
  • 00:03:34
    sustainability across your business and
  • 00:03:36
that's really where our expertise lies
  • 00:03:39
um have you created baselines or kpis
  • 00:03:41
are you starting to draft smart goals
  • 00:03:44
any of those that apply or other I see
  • 00:03:47
someone the other category so if you're
  • 00:03:50
    brave and willing to
  • 00:03:52
um tell us what other means in the chat
  • 00:03:56
    that'd be great
  • 00:03:57
so I'll give it just a few more minutes
  • 00:03:59
it looks like about a half of you have
  • 00:04:03
    answered
  • 00:04:06
    great
  • 00:04:09
all right just a couple more seconds
  • 00:04:11
    here
  • 00:04:16
    great appreciate
  • 00:04:18
um you've taken that kind of really help
  • 00:04:20
    us understand where you're at
  • 00:04:22
so I'm gonna end the result or and the
  • 00:04:25
here and here are the results hopefully
  • 00:04:27
you can see this on your screen but we
  • 00:04:29
    had
  • 00:04:30
um three of you say trying to understand
  • 00:04:32
    the business case
  • 00:04:34
um one customers are asking but you're
  • 00:04:37
not sure what that means uh 30 of you
  • 00:04:40
    have implemented a few projects
  • 00:04:42
um one of you Gathering metrics and four
  • 00:04:45
of you needing to understand how to
  • 00:04:47
    integrate it across your business
  • 00:04:50
    great and
  • 00:04:51
um two others like I said if you're if
  • 00:04:53
you're willing to share what other is
  • 00:04:55
for you um please just put that in the
  • 00:04:57
chat um and I'll just sit here too uh
  • 00:04:59
we're a friendly group and if you have
  • 00:05:02
any questions at any time please feel
  • 00:05:04
free to just put those in the chat we'll
  • 00:05:06
kind of pause to ask if you have
  • 00:05:08
    questions along the way
  • 00:05:10
um but really this webinar is for you to
  • 00:05:12
get your questions answered so please
  • 00:05:15
feel free to ask us anything that you
  • 00:05:18
    like
  • 00:05:19
    all right
  • 00:05:21
so I am going to start here by going
  • 00:05:24
over sort of the business case for
  • 00:05:25
sustainability and I like to do this by
  • 00:05:27
    starting with how we Define
  • 00:05:29
sustainability so the way that we Define
  • 00:05:32
it here with wmp and wsbc is the pursuit
  • 00:05:35
of business growth strategy that creates
  • 00:05:37
    long-term stakeholder value by seizing
  • 00:05:41
    opportunities and managing risks related
  • 00:05:43
    to the company's environmental and
  • 00:05:45
    social impacts
  • 00:05:46
now there's a lot of different
  • 00:05:48
    definitions to sustainability but this
  • 00:05:50
is the one that we really resonate with
  • 00:05:52
    and we really believe that
  • 00:05:54
sustainability is a growth strategy for
  • 00:05:57
    organization and it does create
  • 00:05:59
    long-term value and the reason
  • 00:06:01
    stakeholder value is underlined there
  • 00:06:03
    because
  • 00:06:04
um you know we're not taking a
  • 00:06:06
shareholder lens here we're looking at
  • 00:06:08
sustainability is a holistic sort of
  • 00:06:11
system for a business and community and
  • 00:06:14
therefore all the stakeholders that are
  • 00:06:15
involved meeting your employees you know
  • 00:06:18
    your board your leadership your
  • 00:06:20
    customers
  • 00:06:21
your supply chain and potentially the
  • 00:06:24
community that you reside are all
  • 00:06:26
getting some sort of value out of your
  • 00:06:29
    organization
  • 00:06:32
all right so brief history sort of about
  • 00:06:35
the evolution of sustainability here you
  • 00:06:38
know it again sustainability means a lot
  • 00:06:40
of things to different people and don't
  • 00:06:42
love the term sustainability in and of
  • 00:06:45
itself but uh really in the 90s it
  • 00:06:49
started you know it's really kind of
  • 00:06:50
focused on this triple bottom line
  • 00:06:52
concept people planet and profit it was
  • 00:06:55
    trying to bring
  • 00:06:57
um environment and and people Workforce
  • 00:07:01
    Community Society to an eco-playing
  • 00:07:03
field with profit and this was really
  • 00:07:06
the dawn of what's called CSR or
  • 00:07:08
    corporate social responsibility you know
  • 00:07:10
a lot of companies still publish
  • 00:07:12
    Corporate social responsibility reports
  • 00:07:15
um so this movement really you know grew
  • 00:07:18
out of the 90s it was coined to CBL or
  • 00:07:21
people bottom line but one of the things
  • 00:07:23
that was missing was the governance that
  • 00:07:26
really holds all of these pieces
  • 00:07:27
together and so the second wave
  • 00:07:30
of sustainability really uh came out of
  • 00:07:35
the finance industry and in really
  • 00:07:38
groups are also out of the investment
  • 00:07:40
    Community was socially responsible
  • 00:07:42
investing and you know we've heard an
  • 00:07:44
    uptick of this ESG
  • 00:07:47
um in popularity it sends covet really
  • 00:07:51
um and you know there's a popularity in
  • 00:07:53
ESG and there's also uh unpopularity in
  • 00:07:55
    ESG growing
  • 00:07:57
um but really what this means is that
  • 00:07:59
    we're looking at the organization's
  • 00:08:01
    environment
  • 00:08:02
    environmental social and governance the
  • 00:08:05
    way that they're managed
  • 00:08:07
    um associations
  • 00:08:09
so I really like this slide and I like
  • 00:08:11
Jared because it talks about the
  • 00:08:13
changing conversation of where we are
  • 00:08:15
today so on the left you see sort of
  • 00:08:17
that governance and Leadership became a
  • 00:08:20
part of sustainability or ESG but it
  • 00:08:23
really didn't have an equal part until
  • 00:08:26
more recently and then the other thing I
  • 00:08:28
like about this is it adds in the
  • 00:08:30
strategy and execution piece which is
  • 00:08:32
critical as many of you pointed out
  • 00:08:35
that's the P part you might be
  • 00:08:36
struggling with right you can have
  • 00:08:38
    environmental metrics and social metrics
  • 00:08:40
but how do you tie it all together how
  • 00:08:42
do you integrate it across your
  • 00:08:43
organization and how do you craft a
  • 00:08:45
strategy that really connects to your
  • 00:08:48
um Core Business initiatives to grow or
  • 00:08:52
use it as a growth tool in a
  • 00:08:54
differentiator so like I said that's
  • 00:08:56
that's really one of the areas that we
  • 00:08:58
excel in sort of one of the areas I'm
  • 00:09:00
really passionate about and so that's
  • 00:09:02
really where this conversation is today
  • 00:09:04
and where it's headed in the future
  • 00:09:07
um we get a lot of confusion around what
  • 00:09:09
is ESG and sustainability and other the
  • 00:09:11
same thing are they a different thing
  • 00:09:12
and the way that we Define that is that
  • 00:09:14
    ESG environmental social and governance
  • 00:09:17
is really a financial Tool uh to measure
  • 00:09:21
the impact of sustainability for an
  • 00:09:24
organization so it's one of the tools
  • 00:09:27
    it's one of the lenses
  • 00:09:29
um and it does really resonate more with
  • 00:09:31
    the publicly traded companies because
  • 00:09:34
    that's
  • 00:09:35
    where they're being financially measured
  • 00:09:39
uh so I'm sure you're aware of this word
  • 00:09:42
sustainability means a lot of things
  • 00:09:44
I've said that a few times I like the
  • 00:09:46
slide because it kind of shares the
  • 00:09:48
universe of what we're talking about
  • 00:09:49
    when we talk about sustainability
  • 00:09:52
um you know I've been working in the
  • 00:09:53
space quite a long time and you know
  • 00:09:56
    traditionally in manufacturing
  • 00:09:58
especially there's a large emphasis on
  • 00:10:00
    the environmental side
  • 00:10:01
    but really
  • 00:10:03
you know when I talk to businesses you
  • 00:10:06
know they're like well what about you
  • 00:10:08
know data security or what about you
  • 00:10:10
know risk management in Ireland's all of
  • 00:10:13
    these things fall under sustainability
  • 00:10:15
inside of an organization and sometimes
  • 00:10:17
that's a hard concept to sort of grasp
  • 00:10:20
for those who are newer to this so we
  • 00:10:22
really take a systems approach to
  • 00:10:24
    sustainability it's really looking at
  • 00:10:26
all of the systems across your business
  • 00:10:28
and how you can be in that continuous
  • 00:10:30
    Improvement cycle for
  • 00:10:33
um all of these areas so
  • 00:10:36
um this slide again just shows uh kind
  • 00:10:38
of the the key environmental topics the
  • 00:10:41
    key leadership and governance topics
  • 00:10:43
business model and Innovation is a part
  • 00:10:46
of this uh human capital or you know we
  • 00:10:50
    like to say Workforce
  • 00:10:51
um or in social capital or how
  • 00:10:54
um you know you're handling human rights
  • 00:10:56
    put them as an example
  • 00:11:01
    um let's see here
  • 00:11:04
oh someone was asking about how this
  • 00:11:06
differs from the stgs which is a great
  • 00:11:08
    question
  • 00:11:09
um it I don't want to say it differs per
  • 00:11:12
se Alex they go back to the slide um
  • 00:11:15
from the sdgs I would say it's a
  • 00:11:17
different kind of framework and a
  • 00:11:18
    different approach if you're not
  • 00:11:20
    familiar with the sustainable
  • 00:11:21
    development goals
  • 00:11:22
um or put out by the United Nations and
  • 00:11:24
    there's I believe 19 goals
  • 00:11:28
um and each one of them touches all of
  • 00:11:32
these categories so similarly it's kind
  • 00:11:34
    of a holistic approach
  • 00:11:37
um to sustainability so it very much is
  • 00:11:39
in alignment and a lot of companies will
  • 00:11:42
use the sdgs as a framework again for
  • 00:11:45
aligning what is material to their
  • 00:11:49
organization and we'll talk a little bit
  • 00:11:51
    more about that
  • 00:11:55
all right so uh the business case for
  • 00:11:58
    sustainability is fairly well
  • 00:11:59
established at this point there is a
  • 00:12:02
    large emphasis today on reducing
  • 00:12:04
    long-term risks and sustainability can
  • 00:12:07
add to the resiliency of a company
  • 00:12:10
uh they're really you know some people
  • 00:12:13
    sometimes we hear from manufacturers
  • 00:12:15
    especially that you know the
  • 00:12:17
sustainability thing will cost them time
  • 00:12:18
or money and that can be true when you
  • 00:12:21
come when it comes to large Capital
  • 00:12:24
    Investments however a company that's
  • 00:12:26
    integrating continuous Improvement
  • 00:12:28
    across their or operations
  • 00:12:31
um is really reducing costs if they're
  • 00:12:33
doing it correctly so one example we
  • 00:12:36
have a medium-sized manufacturer that we
  • 00:12:38
work with that really started looking at
  • 00:12:40
this through the product lens and over
  • 00:12:42
    time through
  • 00:12:44
    um redesign through understanding the
  • 00:12:46
materials that were part of the process
  • 00:12:48
of their design of improving their
  • 00:12:52
    processes on the manufacturing side
  • 00:12:55
    increasing throughput reducing waste
  • 00:12:58
both in handling and waste on the actual
  • 00:13:02
    product
  • 00:13:04
    reevaluating packaging
  • 00:13:06
um you know all of those things happen
  • 00:13:08
in a process over time but they were
  • 00:13:10
able able to save literally millions of
  • 00:13:13
dollars in across product lines for
  • 00:13:15
their organization and once they saw
  • 00:13:17
that impact right they started looking
  • 00:13:19
at okay well let's look at energy and
  • 00:13:22
all the energy that we're using uh how
  • 00:13:26
can they make adjustments to production
  • 00:13:27
that help them save on energy costs
  • 00:13:31
now they're working on a zero waste
  • 00:13:33
    initiative across the organization and
  • 00:13:35
they're really doing that because they
  • 00:13:37
    understand the value of
  • 00:13:40
um savings that it has for them uh and
  • 00:13:44
how they can use those resources to
  • 00:13:46
    allocate for other initiatives
  • 00:13:49
uh McKinsey and Company reports that
  • 00:13:52
    improvements in operating efficiencies
  • 00:13:55
can reduce operating costs by up to 60
  • 00:13:57
percent so that's not Pocket Change
  • 00:14:01
folks uh you know we're really talking
  • 00:14:03
about real dollars that you can that can
  • 00:14:05
    be saved
  • 00:14:07
um so I also want to touch on
  • 00:14:09
stakeholders for a moment I'm in the
  • 00:14:11
manufacturing sector one uh this is
  • 00:14:14
really something I think that you need
  • 00:14:16
to consider so if you're a supplier to a
  • 00:14:19
    large publicly traded company
  • 00:14:22
if you're a supplier to the government
  • 00:14:24
either directly or indirectly if you're
  • 00:14:27
in an industry that is one or that's on
  • 00:14:32
the consumer product side or that your
  • 00:14:34
product ends up in the hands of
  • 00:14:36
    consumers
  • 00:14:38
    um
  • 00:14:38
whether it's a product itself or
  • 00:14:40
something that they consume like food
  • 00:14:42
and beverage or you have a product that
  • 00:14:44
exports to the Europe to the EU
  • 00:14:48
the pressure is on in all of those
  • 00:14:50
    categories
  • 00:14:51
    for sure
  • 00:14:53
um so what that means for you whether
  • 00:14:55
you like it or not is that the
  • 00:14:56
expectation uh for you to be measuring
  • 00:15:00
and improving some of these P metrics is
  • 00:15:04
really really there and I can't
  • 00:15:05
understate that we have had companies
  • 00:15:08
that we've worked with that say they're
  • 00:15:10
searching for new suppliers and they're
  • 00:15:12
going out on websites and trying to
  • 00:15:15
understand what the company's doing in
  • 00:15:17
    sustainability if there's no
  • 00:15:20
    reliable presence and sustainability
  • 00:15:22
they're being overlooked and so we're
  • 00:15:26
    hearing that hearsay
  • 00:15:28
    um but you know it
  • 00:15:30
    There's an opportunity there build
  • 00:15:33
    relationships with your stakeholders
  • 00:15:35
with your customers and also get out
  • 00:15:38
ahead of some of the rules and
  • 00:15:40
regulations that are coming to be able
  • 00:15:42
    to
  • 00:15:44
um you know consider potentially new
  • 00:15:46
markets and new customers that you might
  • 00:15:48
not have had access to previously by
  • 00:15:50
    organizing around sustainability
  • 00:15:53
so there's a lot of different things on
  • 00:15:56
this slide that kind of are the business
  • 00:15:58
case but I just also wanted to briefly
  • 00:16:00
touch on the workforce side of this uh
  • 00:16:03
because it's really no secret that in
  • 00:16:04
the manufacturing sector is one of the
  • 00:16:06
hardest hit when it comes to finding
  • 00:16:08
Talent uh and so as Workforce changes
  • 00:16:12
over to a younger generation the
  • 00:16:15
expectations the needs the values of
  • 00:16:19
    these younger employees are different
  • 00:16:22
um and a recent study done by cone
  • 00:16:24
Communications they say that 64 of
  • 00:16:27
workers will not work for a company that
  • 00:16:30
    doesn't have strong environmental or
  • 00:16:32
    social commitments
  • 00:16:35
um I think that number is rising that's
  • 00:16:38
you know the majority at this point and
  • 00:16:41
from what I'm seeing again a lot of
  • 00:16:44
    turnover often happens when companies
  • 00:16:47
    can't figure out how to
  • 00:16:50
how to walk their talk in an appropriate
  • 00:16:52
way right so so green washing is a real
  • 00:16:54
thing they might get some people in the
  • 00:16:56
door saying yeah we have some great
  • 00:16:57
initiatives but if they're not really
  • 00:16:59
taking that seriously that adds to the
  • 00:17:01
turnover and it really can be a way to
  • 00:17:04
engage some recruit and retain uh talent
  • 00:17:07
    in today's Workforce
  • 00:17:10
so those are just a few key aspects of
  • 00:17:13
the business case there's a lot more if
  • 00:17:15
you want any more specific examples or
  • 00:17:18
have specific questions about any of
  • 00:17:20
this I'm happy to answer on that now or
  • 00:17:24
    or offline
  • 00:17:26
uh so after this I am going to turn it
  • 00:17:30
over so uh Greg could we talk about key
  • 00:17:33
    sustainability terminology
  • 00:17:42
uh are you there Greg I can't hear you
  • 00:17:49
uh-oh I know he was having some internet
  • 00:17:52
troubles this morning so am I doing okay
  • 00:17:55
Jesse now okay yes now I can hear you
  • 00:17:57
great thanks uh keep an eye on this for
  • 00:18:00
me so uh thanks all for attending I just
  • 00:18:03
wanted to spend a few minutes to talk
  • 00:18:04
    about fundamentals of sustainability so
  • 00:18:06
we start to look at some of the
  • 00:18:08
definitions that are out there it's
  • 00:18:10
always good to have a good understanding
  • 00:18:12
of what these are so when you hear these
  • 00:18:14
typically you know this is our
  • 00:18:15
    sustainability 101 session where we'll
  • 00:18:18
talk about some of these and one that we
  • 00:18:20
we hear about quite often is carbon
  • 00:18:22
    footprint and that's really your
  • 00:18:24
indicator to compares the amount of
  • 00:18:26
    greenhouse gases emitted from your
  • 00:18:28
company so what does that look like so
  • 00:18:30
you're usually reporting this in in tons
  • 00:18:33
of omissions per year so typically
  • 00:18:35
that's when you hear the term carbon
  • 00:18:37
    footprint that's what that's being
  • 00:18:39
referred to and also when you start to
  • 00:18:42
look at and you hear the term carbon
  • 00:18:44
    accounting it's basically the method
  • 00:18:46
that you're using to count inventory or
  • 00:18:48
track then report these gas emissions so
  • 00:18:51
this is the process that you go through
  • 00:18:53
to make sure that you are are stating
  • 00:18:56
    what exactly is going on
  • 00:18:58
    organizationally
  • 00:18:59
so we talk about carbon this is where
  • 00:19:02
the the fun begins is because we start
  • 00:19:04
to hear scope one two and three and
  • 00:19:06
sometimes people use these and they they
  • 00:19:08
talk as if you know what these are so I
  • 00:19:11
just wanted to go through these quick
  • 00:19:12
with you today to talk about what these
  • 00:19:14
are so you have a good understanding of
  • 00:19:16
it and scope one emissions is
  • 00:19:17
essentially that I arrow in the middle
  • 00:19:19
it's the direct emissions from your
  • 00:19:21
    company owned and controlled resources
  • 00:19:23
so it's things you control internally
  • 00:19:25
scope two are your indirect emissions
  • 00:19:27
from your generation of purchased energy
  • 00:19:30
from your utility so it's whatever you
  • 00:19:32
bring in if it's gas electric you know
  • 00:19:34
so those are the two things that most
  • 00:19:36
companies track and can control it's the
  • 00:19:39
scope three emissions which are all the
  • 00:19:41
indirect emissions that are in your
  • 00:19:43
upstream and downstream value chains so
  • 00:19:46
these are your value stream and value
  • 00:19:48
chain emissions so those are when you're
  • 00:19:51
    asking your suppliers and it's
  • 00:19:53
conversely you may be being asked by
  • 00:19:54
your customers for this information so
  • 00:19:56
that way they can provide their scope
  • 00:19:58
    three emissions
  • 00:20:01
next slide is water balance and
  • 00:20:05
    essentially what we're talking about
  • 00:20:06
here is really understanding the flows
  • 00:20:08
of water in and out of your facility or
  • 00:20:10
processes in your operation so that way
  • 00:20:13
you can get a Quantified number of how
  • 00:20:15
much water you're consuming as an
  • 00:20:18
    organization so
  • 00:20:20
it's tough to get every drop so that's
  • 00:20:22
where there's some acceptable ranges for
  • 00:20:25
accuracy you know to be able to
  • 00:20:27
determine what that water balance is in
  • 00:20:29
your organization so when you're water
  • 00:20:31
balance it's trying to figure out what's
  • 00:20:33
coming and what's coming out what you're
  • 00:20:35
    using internally
  • 00:20:39
the next term is is one that we're
  • 00:20:42
starting to hear more and more of and
  • 00:20:44
you may be getting asked this by some of
  • 00:20:45
your customers is is talking about
  • 00:20:48
circular economy and what this is is
  • 00:20:50
starting to look at you know
  • 00:20:53
in the past we've always look at things
  • 00:20:55
take make and waste is really the way we
  • 00:20:57
would do it we would take something and
  • 00:20:59
we'd make something with it and you go
  • 00:21:00
into the you know trash but you know now
  • 00:21:02
what we're starting to look at on
  • 00:21:03
circular economy is how can we use those
  • 00:21:06
resources to and and keep those
  • 00:21:08
resources in use longer to get the
  • 00:21:10
maximum value while being able to
  • 00:21:12
recover and regenerate some of the
  • 00:21:15
componentry from it at the end of its
  • 00:21:17
    useful life so sometimes organizations
  • 00:21:19
will bring back some of their equipment
  • 00:21:21
and take the parts off that they can use
  • 00:21:23
again and reuse in on different
  • 00:21:25
    assemblies so it just differs
  • 00:21:27
organizationally as to how circular you
  • 00:21:29
can be with your with your materials and
  • 00:21:32
the products that you and goods and
  • 00:21:33
    services that you produce so
  • 00:21:38
the next term is an interesting one and
  • 00:21:41
one that sometimes gets uh misquoted
  • 00:21:44
quite a bit in its normalization and
  • 00:21:46
what we're talking about here is really
  • 00:21:48
trying to equate something to Apples to
  • 00:21:51
Apples so that where there's a
  • 00:21:52
consistent scale so that way you can
  • 00:21:55
understand and evaluate over time what
  • 00:21:58
that looks like so you can see you know
  • 00:22:00
some examples here the number weight
  • 00:22:03
their units produced at a facility so
  • 00:22:05
sometimes we might be looking at you
  • 00:22:07
know how much energy was consumed versus
  • 00:22:09
the amount of units produced or we start
  • 00:22:11
to look at you know persons hours worked
  • 00:22:14
at a facility for the amount of
  • 00:22:16
electricity consumed you know these are
  • 00:22:18
some things and and what you're trying
  • 00:22:20
to do here with this terminology and
  • 00:22:22
with normalization is to be able to have
  • 00:22:25
some standard that you can use to
  • 00:22:26
measure to track your improvements and
  • 00:22:28
activities year over year or whatever
  • 00:22:30
time frame that you're looking at
  • 00:22:36
    along those same lines
  • 00:22:45
uh oh Greg I think you cut out
  • 00:22:52
um I'll I'll just jump in until I can
  • 00:22:54
hear you again how productive can you be
  • 00:22:57
can you repeat that one Greg you kind of
  • 00:22:59
cut out on that one okay sorry so
  • 00:23:01
    resource intensity is the productivity
  • 00:23:03
portion of things and we're always
  • 00:23:05
    looking at productivity we've been
  • 00:23:06
looking at productivity long before we
  • 00:23:08
    were thinking about sustainability and
  • 00:23:10
it's how do you use those raw materials
  • 00:23:12
most effectively to get the value add
  • 00:23:14
that your organization is looking for
  • 00:23:16
how effective are you in using the
  • 00:23:18
materials that you need to produce your
  • 00:23:19
    products
  • 00:23:27
through our work and and working with
  • 00:23:29
companies and and through our research
  • 00:23:31
and experiences we've really come up
  • 00:23:32
with five core beliefs for enhancing
  • 00:23:35
productivity and if you start to look at
  • 00:23:37
those on the right hand side thinking
  • 00:23:39
lean how can we do how can we you know
  • 00:23:41
do well with and be effective and as as
  • 00:23:44
effective as we can be operationally you
  • 00:23:47
know sometimes we start to look at you
  • 00:23:48
know setting goals and limits that will
  • 00:23:50
be able to help us to be able to you
  • 00:23:53
know try to figure out what we want to
  • 00:23:54
be we want to be here so we're really
  • 00:23:56
tracking some of these things and
  • 00:23:57
    setting goals and objectives
  • 00:23:59
uh really should start to think you know
  • 00:24:02
profit per hour how do we look at things
  • 00:24:04
    and bring it down to
  • 00:24:05
um more a greater understanding of how
  • 00:24:08
you throughput yield and you know how we
  • 00:24:10
can do these things operationally that
  • 00:24:12
are really going to help us to you know
  • 00:24:14
look at things from from a like an
  • 00:24:16
employee per hour uh perspective but
  • 00:24:19
really starting to also think about
  • 00:24:21
things from a holistic standpoint of
  • 00:24:23
really starting to understand can we do
  • 00:24:25
things you know from a technology
  • 00:24:26
standpoint can we improve some of the
  • 00:24:28
assist operational systems we have in
  • 00:24:31
our organization and how do we change
  • 00:24:32
behaviors to be able to you know bring
  • 00:24:35
about a more collaborative culture and
  • 00:24:37
and looking at you know how we can
  • 00:24:39
improve our productivity and then once
  • 00:24:41
again thinking circular how can we take
  • 00:24:43
advantage by you know increasing and
  • 00:24:46
optimizing our products and and the
  • 00:24:48
service life cycles that and that they
  • 00:24:50
    maintain
  • 00:24:55
so really the secret sauce for the
  • 00:24:57
productivity Improvement is is taking a
  • 00:25:00
look at and trying to find ways that you
  • 00:25:02
    can substitute away from scarce
  • 00:25:03
    resources so were those opportunities
  • 00:25:05
lied do that you have some
  • 00:25:07
    organizationally that you can consider
  • 00:25:09
or are there ways that you can eliminate
  • 00:25:11
waste through your system you know
  • 00:25:13
anywhere in the system if you can
  • 00:25:14
eliminate waste and figure out ways to
  • 00:25:17
increase your circularity by reusing our
  • 00:25:19
    recycling products and then ultimately
  • 00:25:22
trying to optimize your efficiency from
  • 00:25:24
a standpoint of you know how can you do
  • 00:25:26
it safely and reliably and and have
  • 00:25:29
people buy into that and that's you know
  • 00:25:31
starting to look at that culture how do
  • 00:25:33
we change some of the behaviors that
  • 00:25:34
    we've always been doing
  • 00:25:38
    yeah
  • 00:25:39
any questions on the 101 portion
  • 00:25:43
most of you probably know all those
  • 00:25:44
things so nothing nothing too worth
  • 00:25:46
shattering there so once you understand
  • 00:25:48
those main Concepts let's figure out how
  • 00:25:51
do we get started on this what would you
  • 00:25:52
do to get started well there's really
  • 00:25:54
five key components to a successful
  • 00:25:56
sustainability program and the first is
  • 00:25:58
    commitment is really understanding your
  • 00:26:01
    true north what defines sustainability
  • 00:26:03
    for your company
  • 00:26:04
uh metrics that matter you know you
  • 00:26:07
start to understand what the global
  • 00:26:08
context and the local measures are
  • 00:26:10
determine what's important to you in
  • 00:26:12
your organization what will be measured
  • 00:26:14
to make a difference really that sets
  • 00:26:15
    the purpose of the organization
  • 00:26:18
code of conduct you know it's doing the
  • 00:26:20
right things you know this is everyone's
  • 00:26:22
    responsibility whether you want to
  • 00:26:24
practice sustainability or not this is
  • 00:26:26
really the key to you know making sure
  • 00:26:29
that you have a successful program
  • 00:26:32
um impacts and actions it's really the
  • 00:26:34
    products processes and innovations that
  • 00:26:36
make your company sustainable so those
  • 00:26:37
are the things that you start to take a
  • 00:26:39
look at where can we have the impact
  • 00:26:40
what are the actions that we can take to
  • 00:26:42
make that happen and then ultimately you
  • 00:26:45
    know
  • 00:26:46
trying to you know through strategic
  • 00:26:47
    customer Market employee tools and
  • 00:26:49
systems you know create and new and re
  • 00:26:52
revitalized we who are we doing what are
  • 00:26:55
we going to be who do we want to be how
  • 00:26:56
do we want to project ourselves you know
  • 00:26:58
in the marketplace so those are those
  • 00:27:00
are some that we've found to be you know
  • 00:27:03
very true and in the work that we've
  • 00:27:05
done with the clients that we've helped
  • 00:27:06
    with their sustainability efforts
  • 00:27:12
so when you start to look at this road
  • 00:27:14
map part of being able to build a
  • 00:27:16
credible business case is really being
  • 00:27:17
able to cut through the noise of
  • 00:27:19
    sustainability there's a lot of
  • 00:27:21
    information about sustainability out
  • 00:27:22
there as just you stated and it's not
  • 00:27:24
all equally relevant or impactful to
  • 00:27:26
    your organization
  • 00:27:27
so you know some we've heard of them you
  • 00:27:30
know and we've worked with manufacturing
  • 00:27:31
facilities that you know work really
  • 00:27:33
hard on trying to conserve water because
  • 00:27:35
they've heard that's a good thing to do
  • 00:27:36
but really it's not it's ignoring their
  • 00:27:39
climate impacts on their virgin material
  • 00:27:41
consumption where they could have more
  • 00:27:42
impact by taking a look at that so you
  • 00:27:45
know where what we need to start taking
  • 00:27:47
a look at is really understanding how
  • 00:27:50
can we make those how can we take a
  • 00:27:52
systematic approach to being able to
  • 00:27:54
address these issues to make things more
  • 00:27:56
    complete in your organization
  • 00:28:00
so you can see from this graph here you
  • 00:28:03
know what we're starting to look at is a
  • 00:28:05
methodology that we work with clients
  • 00:28:07
    when we develop a sustainability
  • 00:28:08
strategy for them and this aligns also
  • 00:28:11
    with the green math
  • 00:28:18
oh no he cut out again at least for me
  • 00:28:21
    yeah okay
  • 00:28:27
    um sustainability issues
  • 00:28:30
Greg you cut out again so
  • 00:28:32
um start back at where you were talking
  • 00:28:35
    about
  • 00:28:36
    this is a framework
  • 00:28:38
    sorry about that
  • 00:28:39
    thank you
  • 00:28:41
um so the you know what this diagram is
  • 00:28:43
showing is it's a methodology that we
  • 00:28:45
use when we work with our clients to
  • 00:28:47
    help them develop a sustainability
  • 00:28:49
strategy and roadmap and it's it really
  • 00:28:51
aligns with the Green Masters platform
  • 00:28:53
that Christ is going to speak to shortly
  • 00:28:55
and it's predicated on the plan do check
  • 00:28:57
act model which is a key tenant of all
  • 00:29:00
ISO systems and it helps you to really
  • 00:29:02
    achieve scalable performance
  • 00:29:04
    improvements in the sustainability
  • 00:29:05
issues that matter most to your
  • 00:29:07
    organization and your stakeholders and
  • 00:29:09
build on success over time so really
  • 00:29:11
    it's a it's a it's a methodology that's
  • 00:29:14
    uh continually improving
  • 00:29:19
let's go let's do one more term here and
  • 00:29:21
this is a term that's uh where we
  • 00:29:23
usually start with our clients is
  • 00:29:24
materiality and what we're trying to
  • 00:29:27
understand here is to you you have to
  • 00:29:30
understand you can't do everything at
  • 00:29:31
once and you have to look at things from
  • 00:29:34
a risk and opportunity standpoint to
  • 00:29:35
    understand what's material to your
  • 00:29:37
business and as you can see in this the
  • 00:29:39
Box on the upper right hand side a
  • 00:29:41
material issue is one that's gonna you
  • 00:29:43
    know could affect your organization's
  • 00:29:45
    credibility operational or financial
  • 00:29:47
Integrity or your key stakeholders say
  • 00:29:50
it's important so those those are the
  • 00:29:52
issues that you should be taking into
  • 00:29:53
    consideration as you develop your
  • 00:29:55
    sustainability program and activities
  • 00:29:58
and ultimately you just start where you
  • 00:30:01
are and you grow over time so nobody
  • 00:30:03
expects you to be you know perfect at
  • 00:30:05
the onset the goal is quality and not
  • 00:30:08
quantity so try not to bite off more
  • 00:30:10
than you can chew and really if you
  • 00:30:12
start to look at it and Krista is going
  • 00:30:14
to talk a little bit about this and how
  • 00:30:16
the Green Masters program may be of
  • 00:30:18
assistance to some news because it
  • 00:30:20
    really emphasizes understanding what's
  • 00:30:22
material to your organization and then
  • 00:30:23
    letting that inform your prioritization
  • 00:30:25
of topics and that's what that graph is
  • 00:30:28
on the right and I won't steal Crystal's
  • 00:30:29
Thunder on that but really it helps you
  • 00:30:31
to understand and how you integrate that
  • 00:30:33
sustainability and how you do business
  • 00:30:35
    now and in the future
  • 00:30:39
so some things to include as we look at
  • 00:30:42
from a different perspectives is really
  • 00:30:44
to understand you know and when when we
  • 00:30:47
    conduct our sustainability assessments
  • 00:30:49
    with companies we help companies
  • 00:30:50
understand the current state for their
  • 00:30:52
industry how to navigate the landscape
  • 00:30:54
of that disclosure and it's and
  • 00:30:56
    typically through standards framework
  • 00:30:58
    certifications Etc and what those
  • 00:31:00
    elements of sustainability are most
  • 00:31:02
important for your organization and then
  • 00:31:04
you can take that information can and it
  • 00:31:06
can be used to establish your business
  • 00:31:08
priorities you outline a plan of action
  • 00:31:10
to accelerate that progress and then
  • 00:31:12
    ultimately you know address those
  • 00:31:14
    priority areas
  • 00:31:21
    yeah
  • 00:31:24
    Jesse next slide
  • 00:31:27
    foreign
  • 00:31:31
I think you skipped one for me questions
  • 00:31:34
    to consider and thank you
  • 00:31:36
um so some of these these are questions
  • 00:31:38
for you to take a look at and ask
  • 00:31:40
internally in your organization as you
  • 00:31:42
start to look at and develop your
  • 00:31:43
    sustainability uh framework and
  • 00:31:45
    structure you know there's some
  • 00:31:47
questions here that really can help you
  • 00:31:49
decide you know where you're at
  • 00:31:51
organizationally and ensure that you set
  • 00:31:53
yourself up for for success as you
  • 00:31:55
develop those systems so I won't go into
  • 00:31:57
them here but I mean you start to look
  • 00:31:59
at these things if you haven't asked
  • 00:32:01
these questions these might be some that
  • 00:32:02
would be very interesting for you to ask
  • 00:32:05
and get some information that's valuable
  • 00:32:07
Intel as you develop your system
  • 00:32:13
so why does material materiality matter
  • 00:32:16
to companies because you know if you're
  • 00:32:19
focused on your material issues because
  • 00:32:22
it really has an opportunity to really
  • 00:32:25
you know look at the opportunity for you
  • 00:32:27
to build value organizationally and it
  • 00:32:29
also serves as a you know
  • 00:32:32
you can she also identify your risks to
  • 00:32:35
    your reputation and your profitability
  • 00:32:36
when you start to look at this so you
  • 00:32:38
    know for money companies material
  • 00:32:40
    sustainability impacts are in your
  • 00:32:43
supply chain and you know and that's
  • 00:32:44
often more than sixty percent of your
  • 00:32:46
business when you're more of your
  • 00:32:48
    activities when you're looking at
  • 00:32:49
sustainability so if you factor in
  • 00:32:51
supply chain you know you want to start
  • 00:32:53
taking a look at you know five aspects
  • 00:32:56
for during your assessment to take a
  • 00:32:58
take a look at that and and these are
  • 00:33:01
    biodiversity your upstream and
  • 00:33:03
    downstream greenhouse gases materials
  • 00:33:05
toxic toxics and waste so those are five
  • 00:33:09
areas that you should you know take a
  • 00:33:10
look at as you you know consider and
  • 00:33:13
develop your systems to start to take a
  • 00:33:15
look at where are there some
  • 00:33:16
opportunities there that you know might
  • 00:33:18
be a risk for you organizationally
  • 00:33:23
    um
  • 00:33:25
so what strategy is right for you well
  • 00:33:27
that's exactly right it is yours it's
  • 00:33:29
got to be your strategy so sometimes it
  • 00:33:31
might be building it you might create
  • 00:33:34
something as and develop it on your own
  • 00:33:36
you might leverage some things that
  • 00:33:39
    you're doing you know organizationally
  • 00:33:40
you might already be doing SWOT analysis
  • 00:33:43
or you know doing other types of iso
  • 00:33:45
    related systems and structures that
  • 00:33:48
you're already doing you can incorporate
  • 00:33:49
and build build your sustainability into
  • 00:33:51
that or sometimes your customers are
  • 00:33:53
driving this you know they tell you you
  • 00:33:55
need to be reporting to the
  • 00:33:57
    sustainability Consortium or you know
  • 00:33:59
you there's a different segment of this
  • 00:34:01
business sector that you need to be
  • 00:34:03
reporting stuff to or it's Market driven
  • 00:34:05
it could be you know CDP you know
  • 00:34:08
sometimes you hear some of those terms
  • 00:34:09
and stuff well we got to submit to CDP
  • 00:34:11
or sasby or you know understanding that
  • 00:34:15
you know there may be things that your
  • 00:34:17
customers are going to dictate what you
  • 00:34:19
can do so you have to kind of balance
  • 00:34:21
and determine which is the best path for
  • 00:34:23
you to take organizationally as you
  • 00:34:25
    address sustainability
  • 00:34:29
and as you're starting to do this you we
  • 00:34:31
want to use we want you to start
  • 00:34:33
    considering how you're developing those
  • 00:34:35
uh kpis you know again determining
  • 00:34:37
what's important in material to your
  • 00:34:39
organization those are the ones where
  • 00:34:40
you're going to have those key
  • 00:34:41
    performance indicators driving your
  • 00:34:43
activities and the things that you do
  • 00:34:45
    you have to establish organizational
  • 00:34:47
goals for your sustainability what are
  • 00:34:49
you trying to accomplish what is the
  • 00:34:50
time frame you're looking to reduce or
  • 00:34:53
or meet certain requirements and then
  • 00:34:56
    Cascade those goals into specific
  • 00:34:57
objectives so we talk about smart goals
  • 00:35:00
and how we set those up so that way you
  • 00:35:02
can measure that and hold people
  • 00:35:03
accountable for you know working towards
  • 00:35:05
    those goals assessing your current
  • 00:35:08
performance level you need to be honest
  • 00:35:09
and be where you're at it's not where
  • 00:35:11
you'd like to be it's where you're at
  • 00:35:12
today and how do you improve to get to
  • 00:35:14
where you want to be in the future you
  • 00:35:16
    know establishing those baselines and
  • 00:35:17
targets but then finding time to
  • 00:35:20
establish a Cadence to review those kpis
  • 00:35:22
so you know when is a good time to be
  • 00:35:24
looking at that in most uh ISO systems
  • 00:35:27
you have management reviews so and
  • 00:35:30
typically those could be as as as
  • 00:35:32
frequent as once a quarter so you know
  • 00:35:35
that might be a good time to be looking
  • 00:35:36
at your sustainability kpis as well if
  • 00:35:38
you integrate that into your existing
  • 00:35:40
    system
  • 00:35:41
    actually
  • 00:35:42
so ultimately what we're trying to say
  • 00:35:45
here is you know sustainability is is
  • 00:35:47
    really looking at your operational
  • 00:35:49
activities to be able to see how can you
  • 00:35:51
impact your environment and your in your
  • 00:35:54
work business by doing more with less
  • 00:35:56
and then essentially we've been doing
  • 00:35:58
that for many many years even before
  • 00:36:00
    sustainability was considered cool so
  • 00:36:02
you know continue to start looking at
  • 00:36:04
ways that your organization can do more
  • 00:36:06
with less than your well you're going to
  • 00:36:08
be you know taking some of these tips
  • 00:36:10
and and Concepts and you'll be able to
  • 00:36:12
you know start realizing some greater
  • 00:36:14
benefits and then realizing the the
  • 00:36:17
    benefits of you know incorporating
  • 00:36:18
    sustainability into your existing or
  • 00:36:21
developing into a system that works well
  • 00:36:23
    for you organizationally
  • 00:36:25
so uh I think I'm over on time so I'm
  • 00:36:28
going to turn it over to Krista so she
  • 00:36:30
can get rolling on the Green Masters
  • 00:36:31
    thank you
  • 00:36:33
thanks Greg you're good on time uh that
  • 00:36:36
    was fantastic so
  • 00:36:38
as I said in my introduction I
  • 00:36:42
one of my roles in the organization is
  • 00:36:45
to oversee our Green Masters program The
  • 00:36:48
Green Masters program has been around
  • 00:36:50
for more than 16 years but we actually
  • 00:36:52
do very recently just this year launched
  • 00:36:55
a redesigned version of the program that
  • 00:36:58
was really purpose-built as a scalable
  • 00:37:01
    standard for companies getting started
  • 00:37:03
in sustainability I'm going to go
  • 00:37:05
through a little bit about how we came
  • 00:37:08
to that and how the green master school
  • 00:37:10
really acts as that scalable standard
  • 00:37:12
and that on-ramp for companies in
  • 00:37:15
    sustainability next slide please
  • 00:37:18
so when we started in wsbc again has
  • 00:37:22
    been around a long time
  • 00:37:24
um and has been supporting organizations
  • 00:37:27
    in sustainability hoping companies
  • 00:37:30
    Advance sustainable business practices
  • 00:37:32
for more than 15 years and these are
  • 00:37:35
some of the challenges we've heard from
  • 00:37:37
    companies throughout that time
  • 00:37:40
um and Greg touched on this a little bit
  • 00:37:42
in his presentation that when it comes
  • 00:37:46
    to sustainability
  • 00:37:47
there's so much out there that companies
  • 00:37:50
especially when they're just trying to
  • 00:37:52
get started have a really hard time
  • 00:37:54
    prioritizing what's important and then
  • 00:37:57
partly because of that uh you know they
  • 00:38:00
have a hard time integrating those key
  • 00:38:03
issues into how they do business to
  • 00:38:05
really get the most value out of
  • 00:38:07
sustainability we always uh say there's
  • 00:38:11
a difference between kind of random acts
  • 00:38:13
    of sustainability in an integrated
  • 00:38:15
approach into how into how you do
  • 00:38:18
    business and when sustainability is
  • 00:38:20
really integrated what we've found is
  • 00:38:22
that that really helps companies not
  • 00:38:25
just you know meet the demands of their
  • 00:38:27
stakeholders kind of check the box but
  • 00:38:29
    really take advantage of that
  • 00:38:32
    opportunity to
  • 00:38:34
um maximize the potential of their
  • 00:38:37
company and to minimize risks and that's
  • 00:38:38
what Jesse talked about earlier right
  • 00:38:41
that as an organization we Define
  • 00:38:43
    sustainability
  • 00:38:45
as a business growth strategy right to
  • 00:38:48
create long-term value and so when we've
  • 00:38:52
been interacting with companies over the
  • 00:38:55
course of many years uh you know we
  • 00:38:58
    heard
  • 00:39:06
oh Christa I think you froze on me
  • 00:39:16
I'll give her a minute to come back
  • 00:39:20
um we're having internet issues today
  • 00:39:22
across the board aren't we so um I'm not
  • 00:39:26
sure it looks like she might have even
  • 00:39:27
got kicked out so I'll just pick up from
  • 00:39:29
here oh I got kicked all the way out and
  • 00:39:33
and then it just opened again so sorry
  • 00:39:35
about that we're back in some challenges
  • 00:39:38
today yeah all right then okay thanks
  • 00:39:44
    all right
  • 00:39:46
um so we've heard companies you know say
  • 00:39:49
    they have struggled to integrate
  • 00:39:51
    sustainability get buy-in
  • 00:39:54
um you know navigate the costs related
  • 00:39:56
to that and then even once if they have
  • 00:40:00
buy-in they have they know what they
  • 00:40:01
want to work on they have trouble you
  • 00:40:04
    know whether it's with internal
  • 00:40:06
    resources or employee bandwidth uh
  • 00:40:09
    knowing you know which disclosure
  • 00:40:10
framework to choose where to get started
  • 00:40:13
so in hearing all of that that's really
  • 00:40:17
um we wanted the Green Masters program
  • 00:40:19
to be a solution that addressed that so
  • 00:40:22
we developed this really as a full
  • 00:40:26
    Define
  • 00:40:27
    prioritize manage and improve a
  • 00:40:29
    company's sustainability performance uh
  • 00:40:32
    and across environmental social and
  • 00:40:35
    governance topics and specifically those
  • 00:40:37
that are meaningful to your organization
  • 00:40:39
    and stakeholders the Green Masters
  • 00:40:41
program allows companies to scope their
  • 00:40:44
disclosure or their assessment based on
  • 00:40:47
their priorities making it relevant to
  • 00:40:49
    what they can realistically Infuse
  • 00:40:52
    it's a comprehensive program uh
  • 00:40:55
    including an assessment recognition and
  • 00:40:58
management tools help you in your
  • 00:41:01
    business
  • 00:41:02
    virtual platform fully customizable
  • 00:41:05
approach and scalable standard really to
  • 00:41:08
help guide your entire program so the
  • 00:41:11
    grand Masters program covers
  • 00:41:14
    across the topics
  • 00:41:16
    um
  • 00:41:17
    development of Management Systems
  • 00:41:19
integration of best practices and then
  • 00:41:21
    performance improvements and So within
  • 00:41:24
    that it really helps
  • 00:41:27
    a company identify best practices
  • 00:41:31
uh identify ways where they can leverage
  • 00:41:34
the program and what's within the
  • 00:41:36
program not only to earn recognition but
  • 00:41:38
to act as a road map to help you
  • 00:41:40
    prioritize your actions identify best
  • 00:41:43
    practices and really achieve performance
  • 00:41:45
improvements and one of the things
  • 00:41:46
that's unique about the program is that
  • 00:41:48
    it wraps a membership organization
  • 00:41:50
through wsvc around the Tool uh and
  • 00:41:55
through that you have access to
  • 00:41:57
    peer-to-peer learning mentoring
  • 00:41:58
    resources
  • 00:42:00
    technical expertise training education
  • 00:42:03
tools just a slew of resources to
  • 00:42:05
    support your journey
  • 00:42:07
    next slide please study
  • 00:42:10
    so Greg shared this
  • 00:42:13
    in his slide again
  • 00:42:17
    um and
  • 00:42:19
one of the things that I'm just going to
  • 00:42:21
adjust my view a little bit okay that's
  • 00:42:24
better uh so in the green master's
  • 00:42:27
program we follow the same outline that
  • 00:42:31
Greg uh defined when he talked about how
  • 00:42:34
    we help companies establish
  • 00:42:36
    um a strategic sustainability program
  • 00:42:39
right so it starts with assessing
  • 00:42:41
    material topics setting your business
  • 00:42:43
    priorities uh planning and embedding
  • 00:42:46
    establishing metrics and goals executing
  • 00:42:48
    evaluating and adjusting really follows
  • 00:42:50
that same plan you checked check act
  • 00:42:52
cycle to help companies create and
  • 00:42:55
follow a road map in establishing their
  • 00:42:57
    sustainability programs next slide
  • 00:42:59
    please let's see
  • 00:43:01
again the program covers 15 topics
  • 00:43:06
across four different categories so we
  • 00:43:09
    have environment Society Workforce and
  • 00:43:12
governance and Leadership and I'm not
  • 00:43:13
going to go through each of these topics
  • 00:43:16
you can take a moment to review them
  • 00:43:18
here but what I want to point out is
  • 00:43:20
again in each one of these topics
  • 00:43:22
walk a company through how to develop
  • 00:43:25
    Management Systems specific to that
  • 00:43:28
topic what metrics to track uh you know
  • 00:43:31
    how to establish goals
  • 00:43:34
um you know normalizing factors what are
  • 00:43:37
best practices in that topic unique to
  • 00:43:40
that topic and then you know what would
  • 00:43:43
    kpis for performance Improvement look
  • 00:43:46
like and so again this is where this
  • 00:43:49
program is really not only a recognition
  • 00:43:51
program but a tool to help companies get
  • 00:43:54
    started in advance and sustainability
  • 00:43:56
    next slide please Jesse
  • 00:43:59
the program starts with a materiality
  • 00:44:02
worksheet that helps companies kind of
  • 00:44:04
    practically work through what's most
  • 00:44:06
    material to their organization and
  • 00:44:09
stakeholders so for each topic addressed
  • 00:44:11
within the program companies rate the
  • 00:44:15
importance of that topic in terms of
  • 00:44:17
impact to their business and importance
  • 00:44:19
to their stakeholders Greg shared a
  • 00:44:21
little bit about what considerations go
  • 00:44:24
    into that assessment that materiality
  • 00:44:26
assessment and then the Green Masters
  • 00:44:29
program offers a tool to help you work
  • 00:44:31
through that and document that next
  • 00:44:33
    slide please sassy
  • 00:44:36
    after completing that materiality
  • 00:44:38
    worksheet participants can see their
  • 00:44:40
    results reflected in a materiality
  • 00:44:42
matrix the way we read a materiality
  • 00:44:45
matrix is from top right to bottom left
  • 00:44:49
    the graph visually demonstrates how
  • 00:44:56
high of a priority each topic is so
  • 00:44:58
along the y-axis we have importance to
  • 00:45:00
stakeholders along the x-axis we have
  • 00:45:02
Implement to your business so again on
  • 00:45:06
kind of that scale of one to ten you can
  • 00:45:08
see it's not right would be the highest
  • 00:45:10
priority both to your company and to
  • 00:45:12
your stakeholders and then as we move to
  • 00:45:14
the bottom left it would be less
  • 00:45:15
    important
  • 00:45:17
so companies can use this visual aid to
  • 00:45:20
help select their priorities from the
  • 00:45:23
topics included in the program and then
  • 00:45:25
only those selected topics will be
  • 00:45:27
    included in the company's assessment
  • 00:45:29
    several companies just getting started
  • 00:45:31
    in sustainability we recommend starting
  • 00:45:33
with your highest priority three to five
  • 00:45:35
topic and then kind of moving down that
  • 00:45:38
materiality Matrix to the bottom left
  • 00:45:40
and adding additional topics that are
  • 00:45:42
    relevant to your organization and
  • 00:45:44
stakeholders as your program enfores and
  • 00:45:47
you can really integrate those topics
  • 00:45:50
into how you do business again as Craig
  • 00:45:53
    said it's quality over quantity
  • 00:45:57
um and so over time as you really
  • 00:45:59
integrate those topics you could add
  • 00:46:01
additional priorities and then you can
  • 00:46:04
have quantity and quality over time next
  • 00:46:08
    slide please
  • 00:46:11
so again only the topic selected will be
  • 00:46:13
    included in an organization's assessment
  • 00:46:15
uh you'll be scored for each topic
  • 00:46:18
individually and then your overall score
  • 00:46:21
for the program will be based on the
  • 00:46:24
kind of cumulative score for all of the
  • 00:46:27
topics and that you included in your
  • 00:46:29
    assessment next slide please Jesse
  • 00:46:34
so with that overall score uh you
  • 00:46:39
achieve a status within the grain
  • 00:46:40
    Masters program so adapting advancing
  • 00:46:43
mentoring and green master are the
  • 00:46:45
    fourth status levels that essentially
  • 00:46:47
aligns with quartiles so if you get 25
  • 00:46:49
of the available points in the topics
  • 00:46:52
you identified as material you'd be at
  • 00:46:54
adapting uh 25 to 50 would be advancing
  • 00:46:57
50 to 75 maturing and then over 75 would
  • 00:47:00
    be a green master status
  • 00:47:02
and wsbc members are actually eligible
  • 00:47:05
for recognition within the program uh
  • 00:47:08
that align and that recognition will
  • 00:47:10
align with each of these status levels
  • 00:47:12
so again for companies just getting
  • 00:47:14
    started in sustainability we recommend
  • 00:47:16
starting with three to five topics and
  • 00:47:18
that would make them eligible for the
  • 00:47:20
adapting status and then as a company's
  • 00:47:23
program grows and matures you can add
  • 00:47:26
additional topics allowing you to be
  • 00:47:28
    eligible for higher levels of
  • 00:47:29
recognition we recognize that you know
  • 00:47:33
the industry that you're in will affect
  • 00:47:35
how many topics are priorities to you
  • 00:47:38
and which topics are priorities to you
  • 00:47:40
in addition to kind of your unique
  • 00:47:42
business situation so we offer General
  • 00:47:44
guidance around how many topics should
  • 00:47:47
be required to reach each one of these
  • 00:47:49
status levels both for manufacturing or
  • 00:47:53
    heavy industrial users and then
  • 00:47:54
commercial or you know less intensive
  • 00:47:59
    um less resource intensive participants
  • 00:48:01
as well so the grand Masters program
  • 00:48:04
really is something that appeals to any
  • 00:48:07
company of any size of any industry next
  • 00:48:10
    slide please
  • 00:48:12
okay kind of benefits in the Green
  • 00:48:14
Masters program again we've kind of
  • 00:48:16
talked about this that it's a tool to
  • 00:48:18
    prioritize uh Define prioritize and
  • 00:48:21
    manage your company's performance
  • 00:48:23
specifically in the topics that are
  • 00:48:25
meaningful to you and your business and
  • 00:48:27
then through recognition uh you know it
  • 00:48:30
offers a third party Prudential to
  • 00:48:32
    validate that your sustainability
  • 00:48:35
    program really meets or exceeds
  • 00:48:37
    internationally recognized standards so
  • 00:48:39
in develop in redeveloping the program
  • 00:48:41
we made sure that we aligned with
  • 00:48:44
a slew of widely used internationally
  • 00:48:47
recognized standards so that this tool
  • 00:48:50
could not only help a company really
  • 00:48:52
achieve success within wsbc in the green
  • 00:48:56
master's program but also beyond that
  • 00:48:58
right uh into a range of other standards
  • 00:49:04
that they may be either through
  • 00:49:07
    regulation or customer requirements may
  • 00:49:10
be required to participate in the Green
  • 00:49:13
Masters program is going to help set you
  • 00:49:14
up for success in in those as well
  • 00:49:18
however you can also earn recognition as
  • 00:49:21
you grow your sustainability program and
  • 00:49:23
as a participant you can use the Green
  • 00:49:25
Masters program logo to help share your
  • 00:49:28
    sustainability story and progress next
  • 00:49:31
    slide please
  • 00:49:33
I won't go through all of these but
  • 00:49:35
again there's just a slew of benefits to
  • 00:49:38
    participating in the Green Masters
  • 00:49:39
    program from recognition to validation
  • 00:49:43
    uh to learning
  • 00:49:46
um and a lot of these you'll see align
  • 00:49:49
with kind of the business case for
  • 00:49:51
    sustainability and we were really
  • 00:49:53
intentional to make this a practical
  • 00:49:56
tool that companies across the board can
  • 00:49:59
benefit from and if you have any
  • 00:50:01
questions we're happy to answer them
  • 00:50:04
    next slide please
  • 00:50:06
and with that if Greg is still available
  • 00:50:09
I can turn it over to Greg to talk about
  • 00:50:12
how we can support companies in their
  • 00:50:16
    Journey
  • 00:50:17
    that's what I am okay
  • 00:50:22
    um
  • 00:50:26
    so wmep really has uh
  • 00:50:29
an integrated Suite of Assessments and
  • 00:50:32
services that can help you if you start
  • 00:50:34
to look at things how you can grow
  • 00:50:35
    organizationally we help companies find
  • 00:50:37
ways to reduce costs and increase their
  • 00:50:39
    capacity
  • 00:50:40
the service line that I lead is you know
  • 00:50:43
helping you to be in compliance and and
  • 00:50:46
    Achieve certifications to the alphabet
  • 00:50:48
soup of the ISO standards and improving
  • 00:50:51
quality but we also have and do a lot of
  • 00:50:54
work with clients on helping to maximize
  • 00:50:56
human talent and culture so really we're
  • 00:50:58
a well-rounded consulting firm that can
  • 00:51:01
    provide those services at affordable
  • 00:51:04
costs for folks to be able to you know
  • 00:51:07
really help develop and then grow their
  • 00:51:10
businesses and we love to we love a
  • 00:51:12
challenge and you know help happy to
  • 00:51:14
work through our uh our status as uh as
  • 00:51:18
a non-profit to be able to to help you
  • 00:51:20
    to realize your operational goals
  • 00:51:26
whether one of you want to speak to the
  • 00:51:29
    um
  • 00:51:30
    assessment
  • 00:51:32
um and how it aligns to the Green
  • 00:51:34
    Masters at all or
  • 00:51:39
yeah so we developed a sustainability
  • 00:51:42
    assessment that really
  • 00:51:46
helps you hit the ground running in the
  • 00:51:48
grand Masters program however even if
  • 00:51:51
you're not a participant in the Green
  • 00:51:52
Masters program it's designed to help
  • 00:51:55
    you work through that materiality
  • 00:51:58
process with a perspective of you know
  • 00:52:01
what are your customers doing what are
  • 00:52:03
some of your competitors doing what are
  • 00:52:05
kind of the best practices and um
  • 00:52:08
standards in your industry that could
  • 00:52:11
impact you or that you should know about
  • 00:52:13
and align with what are the expectations
  • 00:52:15
out there of some of your key
  • 00:52:16
stakeholders we help you evaluate that
  • 00:52:19
sift through that and then identify the
  • 00:52:22
    topics within environment society and
  • 00:52:26
governance that are material for your
  • 00:52:29
organization and then we help you
  • 00:52:30
prioritize those kind of based on this
  • 00:52:33
where you're at in your management
  • 00:52:35
journey to integrate those into your
  • 00:52:37
    organization
  • 00:52:39
uh so it can be Standalone right if you
  • 00:52:42
just are trying to get started in
  • 00:52:44
sustainability you're not sure where to
  • 00:52:45
start if you have if you're getting some
  • 00:52:48
pressure from customers or other key
  • 00:52:50
stakeholders if you don't have the
  • 00:52:52
internal resources you know I saw a few
  • 00:52:55
of you say that you're kind of at you've
  • 00:52:58
    done some projects and sustainability
  • 00:53:00
    but
  • 00:53:02
you know you're not entirely sure where
  • 00:53:04
to go from here right or you need to
  • 00:53:06
integrate it across your business there
  • 00:53:09
was a big percentage of you uh and so
  • 00:53:11
    the sustainability assessment is really
  • 00:53:13
designed to meet that need right to help
  • 00:53:16
    you
  • 00:53:17
prioritize Focus build the business case
  • 00:53:20
for the topics that really matter to
  • 00:53:23
    your organization and stakeholders and
  • 00:53:25
then we help you identify what are the
  • 00:53:28
    next steps to accelerate program
  • 00:53:31
    development and
  • 00:53:34
um performance Improvement in those key
  • 00:53:37
priority topics and then again should
  • 00:53:40
you choose to participate in the Green
  • 00:53:42
Masters program it fully aligns so you
  • 00:53:45
could take the deliverable from that
  • 00:53:47
assessment and fill out that materiality
  • 00:53:50
    worksheet select your business
  • 00:53:51
priorities and we even can offer
  • 00:53:54
    suggestions around which topics within
  • 00:53:56
    Green Masters we would recommend
  • 00:53:59
um as a result of that assessment
  • 00:54:01
anything else you want to add to that
  • 00:54:03
    Greg
  • 00:54:05
uh it's very thorough so but you know
  • 00:54:08
    what
  • 00:54:09
not much to add there so great job
  • 00:54:11
Krista thanks thanks and then um also
  • 00:54:14
point out that for the 21st century
  • 00:54:16
Pathways program that's kind of for
  • 00:54:18
companies who have already gone down the
  • 00:54:21
road of sustainability a bit uh and this
  • 00:54:25
    is one that can help
  • 00:54:28
um really take you to the next level in
  • 00:54:32
    integrating sustainability into your
  • 00:54:33
    business function so it's module-based
  • 00:54:36
    coaching and your priority
  • 00:54:37
    sustainability topics and again totally
  • 00:54:40
    customizable to support your unique
  • 00:54:42
business priorities so it'd kind of be
  • 00:54:44
    like the sustainability assessment would
  • 00:54:45
be if you're just getting started or
  • 00:54:47
don't know where it haven't selected
  • 00:54:48
your priorities 21st century Pathways is
  • 00:54:51
really great if you know what your
  • 00:54:52
priorities are but you need that that
  • 00:54:55
next step in how to integrate it into
  • 00:54:57
your business and specifically into your
  • 00:54:59
    business strategy
  • 00:55:03
    awesome
  • 00:55:04
um thanks to both of you uh so I know
  • 00:55:09
there's a few members out there so
  • 00:55:11
    thanks for your support and
  • 00:55:13
    participation
  • 00:55:14
um those of you who are not members I
  • 00:55:16
just wanted to speak briefly to our
  • 00:55:18
Member Program because the Green Masters
  • 00:55:20
program is a free tool to our members
  • 00:55:22
and membership is based on your
  • 00:55:24
organization size so we really try to
  • 00:55:26
make it cost effective because again our
  • 00:55:28
mission and vision is that all companies
  • 00:55:31
    are organizing around sustainability so
  • 00:55:33
we want to make that really accessible
  • 00:55:36
um so just the key benefits of
  • 00:55:37
membership our education we do monthly
  • 00:55:40
webinars uh we do quarterly networking
  • 00:55:44
um we have lots of resources as Krista
  • 00:55:47
and Greg both mentioned we do
  • 00:55:49
    peer-to-peer working groups
  • 00:55:51
um I'll talk about our annual conference
  • 00:55:52
real briefly in the next slide
  • 00:55:54
um so you get access to the Green
  • 00:55:55
Masters program but you also get access
  • 00:55:58
    to this network of other
  • 00:56:00
business people in the state and out of
  • 00:56:04
the state working on sustainability so
  • 00:56:08
um we really kind of bring you together
  • 00:56:09
to help problem solve together you know
  • 00:56:12
we are a resource for you but we're also
  • 00:56:14
like you know one and a half people so
  • 00:56:18
um you know we really try to help bring
  • 00:56:21
you all together to collaborate and work
  • 00:56:25
together to solve these problems and
  • 00:56:26
then of course we love sharing your
  • 00:56:28
    sustainability stories
  • 00:56:30
um to Our member base so with that said
  • 00:56:32
I want to invite you all to our annual
  • 00:56:34
conference this year it's November 16th
  • 00:56:37
    um I'm sorry I didn't update this
  • 00:56:39
picture but kuna Mutual group is now
  • 00:56:41
    true stage
  • 00:56:43
um so it's going to be how that tree
  • 00:56:44
stage in Madison and their beautiful new
  • 00:56:46
building and we're going to be talking a
  • 00:56:49
lot about the workforce we have a whole
  • 00:56:51
    track on that
  • 00:56:53
um in terms of strategies that you can
  • 00:56:55
employ across your organization as well
  • 00:56:58
as like very specific data on what um
  • 00:57:00
employees are expecting of employers we
  • 00:57:05
also have a track on greenhouse gas
  • 00:57:07
management that's a huge topic for
  • 00:57:08
companies right now so lots of great
  • 00:57:11
information lots of ways to connect with
  • 00:57:14
    your fellow sustainability-minded
  • 00:57:18
um folks across the state so that's in
  • 00:57:21
    November registration likely wouldn't be
  • 00:57:23
    open
  • 00:57:25
and then we also have an in-person tour
  • 00:57:29
coming up in Muskego Wisconsin in
  • 00:57:31
September so I wanted to make sure you
  • 00:57:34
all knew about that that's the
  • 00:57:35
sustainability sort of an action in Pro
  • 00:57:38
Corporation is in Muskego will be sort
  • 00:57:41
of doing a deep dive into the evolution
  • 00:57:43
of their sustainability program sort of
  • 00:57:45
the nuts and bolts of it and then we'll
  • 00:57:47
get to take a tour and walk around and
  • 00:57:50
    see it all in action
  • 00:57:52
um and then they're generous enough to
  • 00:57:54
offer us some hors d'oeuvres and happy
  • 00:57:55
hour beverages if you want to stay until
  • 00:57:57
five o'clock so come join us learn more
  • 00:58:01
about what we do meet other members and
  • 00:58:04
we also have a lot more events we do
  • 00:58:06
monthly webinars so I didn't put those
  • 00:58:08
on there you could find those at our
  • 00:58:10
    website which is Wisconsin
  • 00:58:11
    sustainability.com just forward slash
  • 00:58:14
upcoming events that's how you can get
  • 00:58:17
and find out about the working group
  • 00:58:18
    specific to Green Masters
  • 00:58:21
um and then wmep does less events than
  • 00:58:23
we do but they do lots of like
  • 00:58:25
supervisor skills and those sorts of
  • 00:58:28
things so you can learn about their
  • 00:58:29
events at wmap.org forward slash events
  • 00:58:34
um so I know we're close to time here I
  • 00:58:36
wanted to make sure to leave a little
  • 00:58:37
more time for questions so I apologize
  • 00:58:39
we don't have more time for that but
  • 00:58:42
um I can stay address any questions
  • 00:58:43
anybody has I will send out the
  • 00:58:47
    recording once it's complete the
  • 00:58:49
PowerPoint slides as well as that
  • 00:58:51
    materiality webinar that I referenced
  • 00:58:53
earlier I will send that all out to you
  • 00:58:56
in an email either later today or
  • 00:58:58
tomorrow our email addresses are here if
  • 00:59:01
    you want to follow up
  • 00:59:03
um and I will pause here if anybody has
  • 00:59:05
any questions or comments or anything
  • 00:59:08
    that they want to stare
  • 00:59:12
we thank you for your engagement and
  • 00:59:14
questions I appreciate you bringing up
  • 00:59:16
    the sdgs
  • 00:59:18
for sure thanks for being here
  • 00:59:22
hi Kurt all right thank you
  • 00:59:27
all right I'm gonna stop the recording
