  • 00:00:00
being a digital Nomad can look like a
  • 00:00:02
    dream
  • 00:00:04
you can live in any amazing country that
  • 00:00:07
you want work a few hours here or there
  • 00:00:09
maybe even by the beach explore amazing
  • 00:00:12
places and cultures and then move on to
  • 00:00:15
a new country whenever you want
  • 00:00:17
my girlfriend Sally and I did just that
  • 00:00:20
for over a year so why did we stop and
  • 00:00:24
move back home to Copenhagen in Denmark
  • 00:00:26
    let's talk about it
  • 00:00:28
    [Music]
  • 00:00:31
so we actually kind of stumbled into
  • 00:00:34
    being digital Nomads before going
  • 00:00:36
nomadic I started doing freelance photo
  • 00:00:39
and video gigs and Sally my girlfriend
  • 00:00:42
    was doing freelance social media
  • 00:00:44
marketing jobs and well we both did this
  • 00:00:46
as kind of side hustles alongside our
  • 00:00:49
studies and our real jobs but we were
  • 00:00:52
kind of reaching a point where we
  • 00:00:53
realized that working these nine to
  • 00:00:55
fives that we were studying for just
  • 00:00:58
wasn't for us we wanted to go all in
  • 00:01:00
with our businesses and just have more
  • 00:01:02
well freedom in our lives and not be
  • 00:01:04
stuck working nine to five for someone
  • 00:01:06
else and we kind of wanted that to
  • 00:01:09
happen as soon as possible but we
  • 00:01:10
weren't making enough money at the time
  • 00:01:12
to go full time while still living in
  • 00:01:15
Denmark because Denmark is one of the
  • 00:01:17
countries that has the highest cost of
  • 00:01:20
living in the world so my genius idea
  • 00:01:22
was that we could just go traveling
  • 00:01:25
and kind of Leverage that we were
  • 00:01:27
getting paid in a strong currency where
  • 00:01:29
most of our clients are from Denmark so
  • 00:01:31
would pay in Danish krona and so that's
  • 00:01:34
just what we did and voila I guess we
  • 00:01:37
    were now digital nomads
  • 00:01:44
and at first we had kind of planned to
  • 00:01:45
do this for around six months so we had
  • 00:01:48
rented out our apartment for six months
  • 00:01:50
but we actually ended up doing it for I
  • 00:01:52
think 18 months before now moving back
  • 00:01:55
home to Copenhagen where we are right
  • 00:01:57
now so I mean obviously we like being
  • 00:02:00
digital Nomads as we kind of extended
  • 00:02:02
our original plan with an extra year but
  • 00:02:06
if it's so amazing being digital Nomads
  • 00:02:08
why I'd not just continue and just
  • 00:02:10
continue that lifetime I think being a
  • 00:02:12
digital Nomad is kind of a very
  • 00:02:13
particular lifestyle and I guess every
  • 00:02:15
type of lifestyle has its pros and cons
  • 00:02:18
and for us some of the pros were that we
  • 00:02:21
would be able to live comfortably for a
  • 00:02:24
lot less than we would be able to here
  • 00:02:26
in in Denmark we were able to travel a
  • 00:02:28
lot so you usually we would stay in kind
  • 00:02:31
of one place for a long time maybe or
  • 00:02:33
maybe a month or a few months so we
  • 00:02:36
could have some kind of a home base in
  • 00:02:39
the in the area and then kind of travel
  • 00:02:40
from there and have a be staying a place
  • 00:02:43
that had decent Wi-Fi and good basic
  • 00:02:46
amenities I guess and over these 18
  • 00:02:48
months we've just made some insane
  • 00:02:50
memories that we're just gonna keep with
  • 00:02:52
us forever then some of the cons for us
  • 00:02:54
though is obviously not seeing our
  • 00:02:58
family and friends and that's probably
  • 00:03:00
the biggest con of this lifestyle that
  • 00:03:02
you I mean you're oftentimes are on the
  • 00:03:05
other side of the world so we would go
  • 00:03:07
long periods of time without seeing our
  • 00:03:09
family our friends we would miss big
  • 00:03:11
dates birthdays weddings you name it and
  • 00:03:14
that sucks it's also actually just a lot
  • 00:03:17
of work I mean we spent so much time
  • 00:03:19
kind of doing research on places booking
  • 00:03:22
    flights booking hotels just travel
  • 00:03:25
    planning and
  • 00:03:26
the traveling itself getting from one
  • 00:03:28
    place to another getting settled
  • 00:03:30
learning where everything is in this new
  • 00:03:32
place and it's just kind of
  • 00:03:35
it takes a long time and it's also can
  • 00:03:37
be like quite taxing I guess kind of you
  • 00:03:39
have to start over all the time you get
  • 00:03:42
to to a new place a new location it can
  • 00:03:44
also be quite hard to actually maintain
  • 00:03:46
good routines of course it's always a
  • 00:03:49
choice I guess but it's a lot easier for
  • 00:03:52
us to keep good habits and routines if
  • 00:03:54
we are in an environment that's kind of
  • 00:03:56
set up for us to do just that I also
  • 00:03:59
think that we got towards the end at
  • 00:04:00
least a little bit experience numb if
  • 00:04:03
you can call it that because we were
  • 00:04:04
doing so many amazing things and seeing
  • 00:04:06
incredible places like all the time it
  • 00:04:09
would just become the norm we wouldn't
  • 00:04:10
be that amazed when we would go to an
  • 00:04:13
incredible waterfall or stay in an
  • 00:04:16
    incredible Villa or something because
  • 00:04:18
now there's this was just the norm for
  • 00:04:20
us and I don't like that very much I
  • 00:04:22
like you know kind of being amazed when
  • 00:04:24
arriving to to a new place
  • 00:04:27
    [Music]
  • 00:04:30
so I don't think I can say if being a
  • 00:04:32
digital Nomad is good or bad
  • 00:04:35
for us now it's just a time for the next
  • 00:04:37
phase so we loved the time we were spent
  • 00:04:40
as being digital Nomads but now we're
  • 00:04:42
also really ready to just move on and to
  • 00:04:45
this next chapter or phase where we are
  • 00:04:48
staying here in Copenhagen having this
  • 00:04:50
as a real home base close to our friends
  • 00:04:52
and family and then being able to travel
  • 00:04:54
as much as possible from here because in
  • 00:04:57
the end I think for us what's most
  • 00:04:58
important is that freedom to choose how
  • 00:05:00
we live our lives so is it really worth
  • 00:05:03
becoming a digital Nomad and I think
  • 00:05:05
    that's a very personal question
  • 00:05:08
    that only you can answer
  • 00:05:10
but you will never know if you don't try
  • 00:05:12
it being a digital Nomad is probably not
  • 00:05:14
    as glamorous as
  • 00:05:16
it can seem when looking around online
  • 00:05:18
but I think we went into it with pretty
  • 00:05:21
    realistic expectations just kind of
  • 00:05:23
knowing what we wanted to get out of it
  • 00:05:25
and what we wanted to do which is why I
  • 00:05:28
think we were not like underwhelmed and
  • 00:05:30
think we kind of knew what we were
  • 00:05:31
getting ourselves into and we also did a
  • 00:05:33
lot of research beforehand and just to
  • 00:05:35
figure out like what we could expect I
  • 00:05:37
guess because honestly most days we
  • 00:05:39
would just be sitting at home in front
  • 00:05:41
    of our computer working but
  • 00:05:43
at the same time if we wanted to we
  • 00:05:46
could go on an early morning ride to the
  • 00:05:49
nearest waterfall or a beach before
  • 00:05:52
coming back and starting our work day we
  • 00:05:54
could go out eating every day which is
  • 00:05:56
not something we do here in Denmark
  • 00:05:58
because it's just too expensive and we
  • 00:06:00
would like quite often take it full day
  • 00:06:02
off or several days off and just go on
  • 00:06:04
some really epic adventure I think
  • 00:06:06
that's the part that has really made it
  • 00:06:08
worth it for us is all the adventures
  • 00:06:10
and everything we have experienced while
  • 00:06:12
being digital Nomads so how about you
  • 00:06:14
could you ever see yourself becoming a
  • 00:06:16
digital no match let me know down in the
  • 00:06:18
comments and I will see you in the next
