    booze beer and
  • 00:00:36

  • 00:00:40
I thought to myself here is another very
  • 00:00:44
unnuanced binary solution to what feels
  • 00:00:47
    like a very nuanced
  • 00:00:51
problem my name is Boris Fishman and I
  • 00:00:54
am primarily a novelist but over the
  • 00:00:58
last couple of years I have also found
  • 00:01:00
myself writing more and more about wine
  • 00:01:03
so late last week the Surgeon General
  • 00:01:05
    issued a recommendation that cancer
  • 00:01:08
warnings be applied to all alcohol sales
  • 00:01:10
in this country which is something that
  • 00:01:12
I believe Congress must act on first but
  • 00:01:15
the recommendation itself is weighty and
  • 00:01:18
consequential so the news wasn't a total
  • 00:01:22
    surprise because anecdotally this has
  • 00:01:25
been happening for a while reports have
  • 00:01:27
been coming out for some time saying
  • 00:01:28
that alcohol is bad in any amount and
  • 00:01:31
    these findings have real consequences
  • 00:01:34
you know we had dry January now there's
  • 00:01:37
also sober October I'm sure parched
  • 00:01:40
March maybe next then modest August and
  • 00:01:43
as long as you can find a rhyme for the
  • 00:01:44
month I'm sure it'll fall in line but
  • 00:01:46
more seriously little by little the tide
  • 00:01:49
against alcohol has grown foot traffic
  • 00:01:53
    Falls dramatically during January and
  • 00:01:55
you know producers of wine are ripping
  • 00:01:58
out Acres of on Acres of vines I have a
  • 00:02:03
    dear friend an exceptionally talented
  • 00:02:05
wine maker who is taking two years off
  • 00:02:09
the work without income because he no
  • 00:02:11
longer sees the demand I have a neighbor
  • 00:02:13
in the next town over from where I live
  • 00:02:15
who had a 6,500 bottle Cellar which was
  • 00:02:19
you know the Envy of everyone in a 50m
  • 00:02:22
radius and he has made the decision to
  • 00:02:25
stop drinking and sell off most of it so
  • 00:02:27
to me these feel like very consequential
  • 00:02:30
outcomes having to do not only with the
  • 00:02:32
way people live and enjoy themselves but
  • 00:02:34
with business with the kind of culture
  • 00:02:37
we have the kind of products we have in
  • 00:02:39
our Marketplace and what we consume for
  • 00:02:42
    both meaning and
  • 00:02:44
joy so I really want to emphasize this
  • 00:02:47
if somebody has an alcohol dependency
  • 00:02:49
then I couldn't be more of a supporter
  • 00:02:50
of their not participating and so I'm no
  • 00:02:54
one to tell anybody else that they
  • 00:02:57
should embibe or should embibe this much
  • 00:03:00
or this little it just feels like
  • 00:03:02
    something really important is getting
  • 00:03:04
lost in the conversation which is that
  • 00:03:07
the difference in what's wrong between a
  • 00:03:09
glass of wine and and a bottle of
  • 00:03:10
bourbon is enormous and if the Surgeon
  • 00:03:13
General of the medical establishment is
  • 00:03:15
going to communicate with consumers it
  • 00:03:17
must find more nuanced ways of doing so
  • 00:03:20
because the cultural values of consuming
  • 00:03:23
some beverages are very different from
  • 00:03:25
others as are the purposes of most of
  • 00:03:27
the people who do it of course the
  • 00:03:29
government has a responsibility to help
  • 00:03:32
consumers avoid harm no one here is
  • 00:03:35
arguing that there should be no warnings
  • 00:03:37
that there should be no help there
  • 00:03:38
should be no education I'm just saying
  • 00:03:40
that this doesn't feel like the solution
  • 00:03:43
just to speak of myself personally I
  • 00:03:46
write about wine professionally I am
  • 00:03:49
obsessed with wine it contributes a
  • 00:03:51
tremendous amount of meaning to my life
  • 00:03:54
but I almost never have more than a
  • 00:03:57
glass maybe two with a meal
  • 00:04:00
because the purpose it serves for me has
  • 00:04:02
nothing to do with tipsiness or becoming
  • 00:04:05
drunk or becoming looser or anything
  • 00:04:07
like that it has to do with
  • 00:04:10
    participating in an incredibly Rich
  • 00:04:13
    tradition instead of sensory olfactory
  • 00:04:16
    psychological even experiences that
  • 00:04:19
transport me to other places and times
  • 00:04:21
and make me feel things that so few
  • 00:04:22
    other things
  • 00:04:23
do I'm here to say that there is so much
  • 00:04:26
Beauty and meaning in consuming a small
  • 00:04:30
amount of wine that to have that
  • 00:04:33
big-footed by threats and warnings like
  • 00:04:36
the ones we're seeing now that lack so
  • 00:04:37
much Nuance is really disappointing and
  • 00:04:40
frustrating because it's going to drive
  • 00:04:42
so many people away from a truly magical
  • 00:04:45
experience last year my wife and I took
  • 00:04:48
our older child our daughter to Istanbul
  • 00:04:50
and while we were there we wandered into
  • 00:04:52
a wine bar called Wana which focuses on
  • 00:04:54
indigenous Turkish grapes and there was
  • 00:04:57
one glass in particular from a Turkish
  • 00:04:59
variet called Kachi KY if I'm saying it
  • 00:05:02
correctly which makes light bodied red
  • 00:05:04
    fruited wine sometimes compared to
  • 00:05:07
pinoir I put my nose into that glass of
  • 00:05:11
wine and I smelled something that I have
  • 00:05:14
not smelled since I was 6 years old in
  • 00:05:18
my grandmother's Kitchen in Soviet Minsk
  • 00:05:20
which is where I was born with me
  • 00:05:22
sitting at the kitchen table in that
  • 00:05:25
kitchen that I hadn't thought of in
  • 00:05:27
close to 40 years at this point
  • 00:05:30
    the sunlight streaming through the
  • 00:05:31
window in such and such a way and there
  • 00:05:33
was my grandmother now 20 years dead at
  • 00:05:35
the stove in the apron that she always
  • 00:05:37
wore when she cooked more than anything
  • 00:05:40
it was the same exact smell and it was
  • 00:05:42
putting my nose into that glass that
  • 00:05:44
brought me back into that kitchen and
  • 00:05:46
for a nanc brought my grandmother back
  • 00:05:49
    to
  • 00:05:50
life with all respect to signs I don't
  • 00:05:52
care what warnings go on what bottles uh
  • 00:05:55
this is an experience that I never want
  • 00:05:57
    to do without
  • 00:06:02
I was on an airplane yesterday and
  • 00:06:06
passing the business class cabin and
  • 00:06:08
there was a gentleman there wearing a
  • 00:06:09
t-shirt that said but does it
  • 00:06:13
scale there's nothing about wine that
  • 00:06:15
scales and I think that is such an
  • 00:06:18
important experience to embrace and to
  • 00:06:20
have particularly in our lives right now
  • 00:06:23
when everything is supposed to be
  • 00:06:25
    repeatable and predictable and
  • 00:06:28
    programmable we are not programmable
  • 00:06:30
creatures and every time I have a glass
  • 00:06:32
    of wine I'm reminded of
  • 00:06:34
that what I would love for people to
  • 00:06:36
keep in mind is that it's really not
  • 00:06:38
about wine it's about what you value in
  • 00:06:42
    life and what creates meaning
  • 00:06:45
and how perfect we are versus how
  • 00:06:50
fallible we are and whether we sometimes
  • 00:06:52
can draw meaning and import as human
  • 00:06:54
    beings from something that is
  • 00:06:56
    otherwise perhaps technically fallible
  • 00:07:00
I just want people to pause and to think
  • 00:07:04
about this as just one example out of
  • 00:07:07
many in a life that risks becoming
  • 00:07:10
stripped of a certain kind of magic
  • 00:07:13
    because we're trying to protect
  • 00:07:14
    ourselves out of
  • 00:07:17
existence I want you to think about what
  • 00:07:20
your glass of wine is and advocate for
  • 00:07:23
that and keep that alive in your lives
  • 00:07:26
because that flame is precious and there
  • 00:07:28
are certain things in our modern in
