- 00:00:00so before we get started just know that
- 00:00:01this game is something that a lot of you
- 00:00:03probably didn't think I would ever talk
- 00:00:04about on multiple levels and I can
- 00:00:06guarantee that some of the takes I have
- 00:00:07in this we'll be the exact opposite of
- 00:00:09what a lot of fans of the game think
- 00:00:11about just know that this is going to be

- 00:01:10do you remember the scent of your
- 00:01:13childhood capitalism is the worst
- 00:01:15economic system except for all the
- 00:01:17others that's a quote from Winston
- 00:01:19Churchill and really it's sort of a
- 00:01:20thesis statement for this big ass video
- 00:01:22you see disco elium is a game that is
- 00:01:24pretty hard to describe not that it's
- 00:01:25hard to summarize it's a crpg created by
- 00:01:27a bunch of estonians who moved to
- 00:01:28England it's about schizophrenic
- 00:01:30detective trying to keep his mental
- 00:01:31state together while weaving through a
- 00:01:33dangerous conspiracy in a slum city
- 00:01:35beaten down by a failed Communist
- 00:01:36Revolution and horrid crime rates with a
- 00:01:38noticeably disco aesthetic to It Disco
- 00:01:40elesium does whatever it can to stand
- 00:01:42out from the crowd and set itself apart
- 00:01:44from a lot of other crpgs instead of
- 00:01:46dealing with moral alignments like
- 00:01:47something like Boulders gate or
- 00:01:49Pathfinder would have you have voices in
- 00:01:51your head pushing you into different
- 00:01:52vices or Temptations whether it's doing
- 00:01:54drugs drinking smoking hitting on women
- 00:01:57stealing money from people to outright
- 00:01:59joining a political ideology the
- 00:02:00protagonist is beset on all sides by
- 00:02:02distractions and rope blocks that keep
- 00:02:04trying to pull him away from his job and
- 00:02:05it's your job to somehow balance all of
- 00:02:07this and find the truth behind what's
- 00:02:09going on in the [ __ ] hole known as reval
- 00:02:11it's not easy by any means you have
- 00:02:13corrupt union workers acting as
- 00:02:14glorified gangsters a corporate
- 00:02:16negotiator just barely holding on to
- 00:02:17control of a pissed-off mercenary death
- 00:02:19squad a mysterious woman who seems to
- 00:02:21know way more about what's going on than
- 00:02:22she's willing to say and Harry's own
- 00:02:24crippling mental illness disco elium is
- 00:02:26a game that has gathered a very
- 00:02:28substantial and very loyal follow people
- 00:02:30fall in love with the world the art
- 00:02:31style the writing having extremely
- 00:02:33fleshed out characters that all have
- 00:02:34different layers to who they are as
- 00:02:35individuals an art direction that really
- 00:02:37stands above the crowd that sticks in
- 00:02:39your brain for a very long time as well
- 00:02:41as a world with a dense history you just
- 00:02:43naturally want to learn more about on
- 00:02:45top of all this you have an open-ended
- 00:02:46RPG that allows for pretty much any
- 00:02:48solution to a problem if it works then
- 00:02:50it works so you're encouraged to poke
- 00:02:51around for hidden details or things that
- 00:02:53can affect the dice rolls some of which
- 00:02:55can be massive and unlock entirely new
- 00:02:58branches of dialogue that can complete
- 00:02:59complely shift your perspective on a
- 00:03:01character or an event hell some of the
- 00:03:02dice rolls can be so massive you can
- 00:03:04sequence break large chunks of the game
- 00:03:06really if you know what you're doing you
- 00:03:08can beat disum in less than 10 hours
- 00:03:10there's only a few Cannon events you
- 00:03:12need to do in order to reach the ending
- 00:03:14you're not encouraged to do this since
- 00:03:16you need larger contexts to tie
- 00:03:18everything together and you can miss out
- 00:03:19on massive reveals or story threads
- 00:03:21because you rush through things but you
- 00:03:22are allowed to do it and if you know
- 00:03:24what threads really matter to the
- 00:03:25investigation or not you'll get an
- 00:03:27ending that's still pretty satisfactory
- 00:03:29regardless don't rush things you have a
- 00:03:31lot more time than you think you do the
- 00:03:33maximum amount of days that can pass in
- 00:03:35game are about 10 I don't know if it
- 00:03:37goes any further than that that's just
- 00:03:39what I've heard and I've never needed to
- 00:03:40go that far and usually beat the game in
- 00:03:42about 5 days or so this most recent
- 00:03:44playthrough for the video took me about
- 00:03:458 but there's a reason for that I'll
- 00:03:47talk about later all you have to know
- 00:03:48for now is that disco elium was the
- 00:03:50brainchild of Studio zom a collection of
- 00:03:52estonians who moved to England with a
- 00:03:54grand idea in their brain to pitch their
- 00:03:55idea for a massive tabletop RPG world
- 00:03:57with a video game disco leum now a lot
- 00:03:59of this feels kind of weird to talk
- 00:04:01about since disco elium became a
- 00:04:03massively talked about game not just for
- 00:04:04the critical claim going down as one of
- 00:04:06the greatest CR RPGs ever made but also
- 00:04:08the shenanigans the developers got
- 00:04:10themselves into none of which exactly
- 00:04:12positive yeah disco elesium is a game
- 00:04:14mired by controversy more than one for
- 00:04:17one when the game won an award during
- 00:04:19the 2019 game awards one of the writers
- 00:04:22Helen hipar hind Perry however the [ __ ]
- 00:04:25you say your name took time to thank
- 00:04:27Carl Marx and Frederick Eng Les during
- 00:04:29the speech so um we like to thank all
- 00:04:32the great people that came before
- 00:04:37usin epin Vladimir
- 00:04:40makovski Victor
- 00:04:43toy and marks and Angel for providing us
- 00:04:46the political education thank you
- 00:04:48something that game journals loved when
- 00:04:50they weren't busy covering up sexual
- 00:04:52abuse at Blizzard or putting on bug
- 00:04:53teeth and squinting eyes for Persona
- 00:04:55[Music]
- 00:04:58reviews
- 00:05:00it is time of
- 00:05:03G this would still be funny if the
- 00:05:07people involved didn't start calling
- 00:05:09their own audience racist 10 years later
- 00:05:11or if Japanese developers didn't come
- 00:05:13out and admitted they felt sabotaged in
- 00:05:16the Western Market uh by journalists
- 00:05:19pushing the Japan is so weird talking
- 00:05:23point series like Xeno Blade still
- 00:05:25receive criticism for being too Japanese
- 00:05:28which is a completely insane standard
- 00:05:30that the general public is only now
- 00:05:32realizing as proof the side calling
- 00:05:34Gamers bigots were themselves over the
- 00:05:37top parities of human beings this whole
- 00:05:39time but the rest of the audience took
- 00:05:41that as a sign that the game was
- 00:05:42blatantly biased towards communism and
- 00:05:44Marxism something I believed for years
- 00:05:47until a friend insisted I actually sit
- 00:05:48down and play it and there's still a
- 00:05:50very large chunk of people that actively
- 00:05:52refuse to play Disco elesium because of
- 00:05:53this stunt something you can't really
- 00:05:55blame them for it's essentially telling
- 00:05:57a Jew to sit down and play a video game
- 00:05:59after one of the developers made a
- 00:06:00speech praising Adolf Hitler shocker
- 00:06:02some parts of the world had very bad
- 00:06:04experiences with Marxism and communism
- 00:06:06which is especially ironic concerning
- 00:06:07the dev team's Heritage Estonia was not
- 00:06:10treated well by the Soviets under any
- 00:06:11definition a sentiment that does slip
- 00:06:13into the game on more than a few
- 00:06:15occasions but we're going to talk about
- 00:06:16that towards the end there's a reason
- 00:06:18you can't wear a CH Vera shirt in
- 00:06:19certain neighborhoods in Miami just to
- 00:06:21put it lightly socially it may not be on
- 00:06:23the same level but there are people that
- 00:06:24view communism and its symbols as bad
- 00:06:26memories of famines death squads and
- 00:06:29oppression to them the Nazis and the
- 00:06:30Soviets were the same people just one
- 00:06:32was to the East and the other was to the
- 00:06:34West I mention all of this because this
- 00:06:35really painted the game in a much more
- 00:06:37different light than it really should
- 00:06:39have been to the point that it's
- 00:06:40completely tainted any ability to talk
- 00:06:42about the game objectively and led to
- 00:06:43some urban legends and outright scary
- 00:06:45misinterpretations of story elements
- 00:06:47something that can be very revealing
- 00:06:49about the person who sees it that way
- 00:06:51and the best part is how much of this is
- 00:06:53rendered ironic by the eventual closure
- 00:06:55of Studio Zam conquered by their
- 00:06:56publisher and a hostile takeover all the
- 00:06:58Developers fired and the lead developer
- 00:07:01outright locked in an insane asylum no
- 00:07:03I'm not kidding for a while nobody has
- 00:07:05any clue what happened they assumed it
- 00:07:07was a situation very common in gaming a
- 00:07:09gritty publisher wanted a bigger slice
- 00:07:10of the pie so they [ __ ] the people
- 00:07:12over something actually kind of fitting
- 00:07:14considering the supposed communist
- 00:07:15sympathies in the game but that's not
- 00:07:17what happened at least not fully a
- 00:07:18documentary by the Channel people make
- 00:07:20games was released with the intention of
- 00:07:21digging into what killed Studio zom and
- 00:07:24some of the reveals were extremely
- 00:07:26interesting I highly recommend you all
- 00:07:27sit down to watch this documentary it's
- 00:07:29really really really revealing about the
- 00:07:31actual personalities involved with disco
- 00:07:32elesium and still something that fits
- 00:07:34the game like a glove just not the way
- 00:07:36the Communists think to the point they
- 00:07:37have had some seriously pathetic
- 00:07:39attempts to debunk the documentary even
- 00:07:41though there are word forword emails and
- 00:07:44transcripts and interviews that really
- 00:07:46don't paint them as anything other than
- 00:07:47insane you see the dev team wasn't
- 00:07:50actually that political they were left
- 00:07:52leaning sure I mean they were European
- 00:07:53by American Standards everyone on that
- 00:07:55continent a lefty but by no means were
- 00:07:56they all singing solidarity forever
- 00:07:58during meetings in fact there were
- 00:08:00shitloads of infighting with a Project
- 00:08:01Lead himself the creator of disco lum's
- 00:08:03World being painted as an egotistical
- 00:08:05hypocritical pretentious Thief preaching
- 00:08:07about the values of Marxism all while
- 00:08:09refusing to do any work and outright
- 00:08:11stealing credit for things other members
- 00:08:13on the team did to the point his best
- 00:08:14friend one of the lead writers for the
- 00:08:16game admitted that he really should have
- 00:08:17been fired for what he did and this is
- 00:08:19on top of downright Shady events that
- 00:08:20happened with the Studio's money just
- 00:08:22before the the game came out that that
- 00:08:25includes a line from Robert estimating
- 00:08:26that he individually is responsible for
- 00:08:28about half of the game's total word
- 00:08:30count um I don't think that's true yeah
- 00:08:34I I there was also a claim that Robert
- 00:08:37rosov and Helen had had kind of checked
- 00:08:39out of their responsibility well not
- 00:08:41kind of the language is pretty is pretty
- 00:08:43direct that they'd stopped working for
- 00:08:46almost two years while still being paid
- 00:08:48at the studio I had someone who is on
- 00:08:49the writing team who continued to work
- 00:08:51on final CS um does that sound fair what
- 00:08:54was your read on on on that I'd say
- 00:08:57that's semi Fair because uh yes after
- 00:09:00the after released we released disco on
- 00:09:0215th October 2019 after that the first
- 00:09:06three four months were complete hangover
- 00:09:10like uh everybody was so tired from I
- 00:09:12think at some point Robert was supposed
- 00:09:14to start pre-production or like at least
- 00:09:17concepting of on on the
- 00:09:20sequel and uh in some in some degree he
- 00:09:24definitely did that he wrote like a
- 00:09:25bunch of new
- 00:09:26skills uh but did like you it's it's
- 00:09:30it's a thing where you can't say that uh
- 00:09:33no work was was was done that that would
- 00:09:34be that would be false some work would
- 00:09:37was done but uh the question is like is
- 00:09:41it is it is it the acceptable acceptable
- 00:09:44amount because like especi especially if
- 00:09:47you look at it from some with Through
- 00:09:49The Eyes of someone outside the riding
- 00:09:51team then it might look absurd like it
- 00:09:53might say might look that guys this year
- 00:09:55it's been years and you haven't done
- 00:09:56anything aate you guys really need to
- 00:09:58sit down and watch documentary it says a
- 00:10:00lot about the dev team and there are
- 00:10:02true stances on things something that is
- 00:10:04just beautifully ironic considering the
- 00:10:06game and the reputation it's built over
- 00:10:08the years the best part of the whole
- 00:10:10situation is the fact coritz was accused
- 00:10:15of employee abuse and outright
- 00:10:18conspiring to steal the source code for
- 00:10:20disco elesium with the intention of
- 00:10:23keeping it Hostage to get Petty
- 00:10:24Vengeance against other members in the
- 00:10:27company and a sense of ownership seeing
- 00:10:31himself as the only true owner of the IP
- 00:10:35despite being an avowed communist
- 00:10:38meaning by his own philosophy the IP no
- 00:10:41longer belongs to him alone and instead
- 00:10:45belongs to everyone he even wrote an
- 00:10:49entire novel all about his love of
- 00:10:51Communism ideology trying to force it uh
- 00:10:54into the cannon of the game uh despite
- 00:10:57it causing major plot holes and dumbing
- 00:10:59the story down to be the exact opposite
- 00:11:02of what was intended turning a game
- 00:11:04about the dangers of ideology and
- 00:11:06extremism and to all about how everyone
- 00:11:09just isn't loyal enough to the political
- 00:11:11route curve its likes the most making it
- 00:11:15into a literal magic deos exmachina if
- 00:11:19you just listen to the Zeitgeist about
- 00:11:21disco elesium you'd think it's some
- 00:11:22pretentious Chinese room Style Walking
- 00:11:24simulator a masturbatory exploration of
- 00:11:26why communism is so great and never
- 00:11:28killed any bu and everything is the
- 00:11:30capitalist fault in truth no disco
- 00:11:32elesium is not like that at all in fact
- 00:11:34knowing about the infighting in the
- 00:11:35studio makes certain moments and
- 00:11:37characters all the more enlightening
- 00:11:39especially about the philosophy they're
- 00:11:40supposedly so in love with but I'll talk
- 00:11:41about all this later for now let's just
- 00:11:43give a basic introduction to what it's
- 00:11:44like to play Disco elium you have the
- 00:11:46very basic mechanics dialog trees that
- 00:11:48lead to deeper trees a clothing system
- 00:11:50that only really works to add modifiers
- 00:11:52to your various stats a Stat system that
- 00:11:54affects different ways that protagonists
- 00:11:55can approach the investigation and not
- 00:11:57just basic stuff like strength charisma
- 00:11:59intelligence no these are all different
- 00:12:00aspects of his personality his
- 00:12:02aggression impulse control addictive
- 00:12:04personality traits empathy for others
- 00:12:06it's a much more psychological profile
- 00:12:07than a dndd style stat breakdown each of
- 00:12:10the stats even has flavor text
- 00:12:12describing how specking into each trait
- 00:12:13affects Harry how they impact his body
- 00:12:15and mind and possible roleplay options
- 00:12:17you can make a Jack Reacher style Harry
- 00:12:19someone intelligent and strong but has
- 00:12:21trouble interacting with human beings on
- 00:12:23the other hand you have options for a
- 00:12:24Steve Bru hary not very smart not very
- 00:12:27charismatic but he stumbles into
- 00:12:28outright other worldly events that's
- 00:12:30something to mention for later by the
- 00:12:31way you can go full Sherlock Holmes
- 00:12:33cocaine addiction and all Miami Vice
- 00:12:34style super cop or just a complete [ __ ]
- 00:12:36up and sleep outside cuz you waste all
- 00:12:38your money on booze hell you can't even
- 00:12:40edit your save file to max out all
- 00:12:41traits and this is actually a play style
- 00:12:43the game addresses it's not just some
- 00:12:45God playthrough it has its own set of
- 00:12:47drawbacks constantly barraged by skill
- 00:12:49checks since there are tons of dice
- 00:12:51rolls the game doesn't even tell you
- 00:12:52about rolling in the background it's
- 00:12:54essentially a schizophrenia simulator
- 00:12:55dealing with the endless voices in your
- 00:12:57head telling you to do things because
- 00:12:58because these aren't just advisers
- 00:13:00offering their own solution to a
- 00:13:01situation they have their own share of
- 00:13:02biases and bad [ __ ] ideas to the
- 00:13:05point they can get downright scary you
- 00:13:07get the point disco elesium is very
- 00:13:09unique in how it tackles role playing
- 00:13:10but you might have noticed there's a
- 00:13:11certain mechanic I haven't talked about
- 00:13:13yet combat that's because there is none
- 00:13:15instead of doing something like Fallout
- 00:13:17or Arcanum where they have clunky simple
- 00:13:19combat systems that completely rely on
- 00:13:20dice rolls disco elium just rips them
- 00:13:22out it's essentially a visual novel The
- 00:13:24only combat you get are dice rolls for
- 00:13:26specific choices and they act more like
- 00:13:28story moments than anything personally I
- 00:13:30think that's fine a lot of crpgs
- 00:13:32struggle with balancing their combat and
- 00:13:34usually are super clunky and easy to
- 00:13:36break or have insane difficulty spikes
- 00:13:38you can tell a lot of crpg see combat as
- 00:13:40an afterthought and want to focus more
- 00:13:42on dialogue and Story the larger World
- 00:13:44building PL Escape tornament has a
- 00:13:46really small amount of combat to it and
- 00:13:47focuses much more on dialogue puzzles
- 00:13:50and learning about the setting than
- 00:13:51anything else of course you also have
- 00:13:52games like divinity and boulders Gate 3
- 00:13:54which have fleshed out combat systems
- 00:13:56that are fun to interact with so it's
- 00:13:58not like you have to to choose between
- 00:13:59combat or story also a lot of jrpgs also
- 00:14:02manag to have good stories and really
- 00:14:03fun combat systems cenal blade Final
- 00:14:06Fantasy Persona stuff like that but
- 00:14:07disco elesium does make the choice and
- 00:14:09dedicates fully to being a story game
- 00:14:11everything you do in some way revolves
- 00:14:13around various conversations you have
- 00:14:14with characters in the game whether it
- 00:14:16unlocks more dialogue options applies
- 00:14:18modifier to dice rolls or reveals a
- 00:14:19character is lying to you this is a
- 00:14:21walking and talking game something that
- 00:14:23hinges on the writing if it can't grip
- 00:14:24you then this is just a pretentious drek
- 00:14:27of a game sucking up to games journalist
- 00:14:29the feeble tantrum of the games are art
- 00:14:30crowd you're not completely wrong but at
- 00:14:32the same time disco elesium does have
- 00:14:34some really good writing the story is
- 00:14:36very engaging with a lot of mystery and
- 00:14:37twists and layers to its themes that
- 00:14:39allow the player to come to their own
- 00:14:40conclusions on the story it's a Fearless
- 00:14:43game being very upfront about what it's
- 00:14:44saying and willing to put forth ideas
- 00:14:46that no corporate game would ever
- 00:14:47attempt in a million years the
- 00:14:49characters can be likable hatable they
- 00:14:51can annoy the piss out of you or they
- 00:14:52can send to chill up your spine but at
- 00:14:54the end of the day they are memorable
- 00:14:56they focused 100% on the story and
- 00:14:57managed to live up to the that idea it's
- 00:14:59a good story to put it simply and you
- 00:15:01can tell you're in for something special
- 00:15:03just from the intro now before we get
- 00:15:05any further I'm putting up a spoiler
- 00:15:07warning for Disco elesium This is a
- 00:15:09mystery game all focusing on a central
- 00:15:11crime please sit down and play Disco
- 00:15:13elium before going any further there's
- 00:15:15so much to the game that you'd be
- 00:15:16missing on the entire point of a
- 00:15:18detective game just from having the plot
- 00:15:20spoonfed to you you won't regret it plus
- 00:15:22you can develop your own interpretation
- 00:15:24of the game so don't let me spoil what
- 00:15:26could potentially be something
- 00:15:27completely different to
- 00:15:29you [ __ ] you so the actual plot of disco
- 00:15:33Lum is really simple a mercenary acting
- 00:15:35as a security guard was murdered in the
- 00:15:37downtrodden city of reval lynched up in
- 00:15:39a tree and left a rot by some more
- 00:15:41militant members of a union The Hardy
- 00:15:43Boys Harry Dubois the protagonist
- 00:15:45arrives for reval to investigate he's a
- 00:15:47highly decorated officer with hundreds
- 00:15:49of solved cases under his belt so it
- 00:15:50seems like this is a no-brainer he can
- 00:15:52solve in a weekend except Harry has had
- 00:15:54a few bad days for 6 years straight
- 00:15:57unable to get over a nasty break up with
- 00:15:59his fiance and dealing with growing
- 00:16:00burnout at the same time Harry suffers a
- 00:16:03complete mental breakdown going on a
- 00:16:05massive Bender attempting suicide more
- 00:16:07than once and eventually drinking so
- 00:16:09hard he develops complete Amnesia not
- 00:16:11just that he forgets who he is as a
- 00:16:12person but he forgot all of reality he
- 00:16:15doesn't know where he is what anything
- 00:16:17is and now has to solve the case with
- 00:16:18his partner Kim karagi who is basically
- 00:16:21just forced to play babysitter to
- 00:16:22rambling madman Harry his left ass so
- 00:16:25right from the get-go disco elesium sets
- 00:16:27itself up to be a very interesting
- 00:16:28mystery the game revolves not just
- 00:16:30around dealing with the various factions
- 00:16:32of revisal but Harry's psychology there
- 00:16:34is a reason the various voices in
- 00:16:35Harry's head are such a prevalent entity
- 00:16:37in the game because they're the ruins of
- 00:16:39Harry's mind scrambling to take control
- 00:16:41of him noway is completely amnesic and
- 00:16:43depending on which one you listen to
- 00:16:44Harry can become all sorts of an
- 00:16:46individual not just politically which is
- 00:16:47what everyone focuses on but just who he
- 00:16:49is as a man you can become convinced
- 00:16:51that the world is ending and he's a
- 00:16:52prophet sent to warn Humanity if it's
- 00:16:54coming demise he can think he's a
- 00:16:56fictional super detective in the books
- 00:16:57written about the character are
- 00:16:59Chronicles of his adventures a psychic
- 00:17:01cop part of the remote viewers division
- 00:17:03it's totes a real thing promise an
- 00:17:04artist desperate to paint his
- 00:17:05Masterpiece or just a guy who finally
- 00:17:07gets his [ __ ] together and does his
- 00:17:08[ __ ] job disco elium has a lot of
- 00:17:10options and you can mix and match all of
- 00:17:12these picking one road doesn't
- 00:17:13necessarily lock you out of others in
- 00:17:15fact there's some pretty hilarious
- 00:17:16scenes when you throw two contradicting
- 00:17:18philosophies together disco elium as a
- 00:17:20good finger on the pulse of what players
- 00:17:21want to see and as a result you get
- 00:17:23hundreds of hours of replayability it's
- 00:17:25not possible to see everything in a
- 00:17:27single playthrough you can get quite a
- 00:17:29bit but specific roots and their ending
- 00:17:31require commitment this is on top of the
- 00:17:33fact that with passive dice rolls you
- 00:17:35can end up going through playthroughs
- 00:17:36that all feel distinct from each other
- 00:17:37that's not to say the game is infinite
- 00:17:39not at all but you will see things
- 00:17:41differently in each playthrough so don't
- 00:17:42be afraid to get creative this is a game
- 00:17:44all about expression how you express
- 00:17:46yourself in the game and how you solve
- 00:17:48the mystery Harry in particular is one
- 00:17:50of the best compromises between the two
- 00:17:52styles of an RPG protagonist I've talked
- 00:17:54about this before but RPGs tend to fall
- 00:17:56into two archetypes with their
- 00:17:57protagonists pre-written characters with
- 00:17:59a set backstory and you make choices
- 00:18:01that are essentially in character to who
- 00:18:03they are as an individual in the world
- 00:18:04or complete blank slates that you fully
- 00:18:06imprint onto and choose every detail of
- 00:18:08who they are it's essentially the
- 00:18:10difference between something like
- 00:18:11Fallout New Vegas or Boulders Gate 3 and
- 00:18:14Dex or Mass Effect disco elesium is
- 00:18:16actually a balance of these two Harry is
- 00:18:18a pre-written character he has a setback
- 00:18:20story and history in the story but at
- 00:18:22the same time he is completely open to
- 00:18:25you to roleplay you can choose every
- 00:18:27detail of his personal it but his
- 00:18:29beliefs his politics even some details
- 00:18:31you wouldn't see coming are you can't
- 00:18:33play as anyone except Harry but the
- 00:18:34options you have as Harry are almost
- 00:18:36infinite you can imprint whatever you
- 00:18:38want onto him and interpret who exactly
- 00:18:40he is as a man how you see fit it's one
- 00:18:42of the best aspects of the game coming
- 00:18:44up with your own version of Harry and
- 00:18:45seeing it through to the end personally
- 00:18:47I love the psychic cop rout specking
- 00:18:49into the supernatural skills and having
- 00:18:51Harry be the skitso that can talk to the
- 00:18:52city everyone else calls him crazy on
- 00:18:54some level Harry himself thinks he's
- 00:18:56crazy at the end of the day he's capable
- 00:18:58of things no one can explain rationally
- 00:19:00it's great especially when you learn
- 00:19:01about certain aspects of the setting
- 00:19:02that show that he may not be completely
- 00:19:04wrong still this is just what I like for
- 00:19:06my playthroughs others have their own
- 00:19:07Styles and they can be just as engaging
- 00:19:10and you might stumble into your own
- 00:19:11details that I didn't see because I just
- 00:19:13didn't get the rolls for it that's not
- 00:19:14to say disco elium is going to be
- 00:19:16completely different game each time you
- 00:19:17play more that it's going to help show
- 00:19:19different sides to different people some
- 00:19:20people view this game as a biting satire
- 00:19:22to ideology and politics as a whole
- 00:19:24others think it's just a Shameless Love
- 00:19:26Letter to Communism and condemning the
- 00:19:27fact human natur leads to its failure
- 00:19:29others just want to talk to a stick buug
- 00:19:31who is a very good boy the whole point
- 00:19:32and how I see the game as a whole is
- 00:19:34this disco elium is a ro Shack test
- 00:19:36depending on how you interpret elements
- 00:19:38of the game and how you view the story
- 00:19:39it can reveal a lot about the individual
- 00:19:41playing it the Fallout New Vegas
- 00:19:42comparison from earlier extends to more
- 00:19:44than just gameplay New Vegas handles its
- 00:19:46story in a very similar way to the point
- 00:19:48I wouldn't be surprised if the
- 00:19:49developers took some inspiration for
- 00:19:51disco elesium I mean playing an amnesiac
- 00:19:53waking up in the middle of a tense
- 00:19:54political struggle and Brewing war is a
- 00:19:56little too close not to mention and just
- 00:19:58like New Vegas it sets up each faction
- 00:20:00with its own history and culture the ups
- 00:20:02and downs some representatives of the
- 00:20:04ideology and some role in the plot some
- 00:20:06larger than others once again this is
- 00:20:08why you want to explore round because
- 00:20:09you'd be surprised how crucial certain
- 00:20:11characters were to the whole puzzle
- 00:20:12disco Alum manches to show each ideology
- 00:20:15pretty fairly sure you can argue that
- 00:20:16some get more [ __ ] than others I mean
- 00:20:18fascism is a complete [ __ ] Post run but
- 00:20:20you kind of go in knowing that it's
- 00:20:22funny as hell watching Harry blame
- 00:20:23literally every problem in rubish all on
- 00:20:25foreigners especially since if you want
- 00:20:26to get technical he's not completely
- 00:20:27wrong I mean the Coalition are
- 00:20:29technically a collection of foreigners
- 00:20:31but the point is that there's joke runs
- 00:20:32and more serious ones we can actually
- 00:20:34sit down and think about what's being
- 00:20:35said it's why I called the game a road
- 00:20:37shock test because the conclusions you
- 00:20:38come to for each Road will stand out
- 00:20:40because of your own personal belief
- 00:20:41system and what conclusion did I have on
- 00:20:43the game and what it's saying well this
- 00:20:45where things get a little spicy I said
- 00:20:47before that the general fan base of
- 00:20:48disco elium view it as a love letter to
- 00:20:50Communism and Marxism and discusses the
- 00:20:52tragedy of how it always fails sure that
- 00:20:54element is sort of there but I saw the
- 00:20:56story in almost the complete opposite
- 00:20:57direction ction it has downright
- 00:20:59scathing criticisms of Communism to
- 00:21:01levels that go beyond hear some flaws
- 00:21:03about her own ideology the cope among
- 00:21:05the commi fan base is that it's how you
- 00:21:07know the game was made by real
- 00:21:08Communists because they are willing to
- 00:21:09criticize the ideology so harshly which
- 00:21:12is such an obvious Spin and attempt to
- 00:21:13damage control that pretty much anyone
- 00:21:15can see the [ __ ] for what it is this
- 00:21:16is why I brought the studio infighting
- 00:21:18in the beginning because some scenes
- 00:21:19feel especially bitter and like they're
- 00:21:21telling somebody [ __ ]
- 00:21:24you rise and shine comrade it's time to
- 00:21:27get to work despite all the thinking
- 00:21:30you've been doing only
- 00:21:340.00001% of Communism has been built
- 00:21:38it's too great a task to undertake a
- 00:21:40loan you're going to have to get
- 00:21:43organized your level of personal upkeep
- 00:21:46is irrelevant all that matters is your
- 00:21:49commitment to building the world
- 00:21:51Republic you must seek out your
- 00:21:54revolutionary brothers and sisters find
- 00:21:57out how much communism they've built
- 00:22:00then together maybe you'll be able to
- 00:22:02build as much as
- 00:22:060.2% of Communism but it won't be easy
- 00:22:11Decades of persecution by Coalition
- 00:22:14authorities have driven the remaining
- 00:22:16Communists of martines underground they
- 00:22:19live
- 00:22:21underground these Communists aren't men
- 00:22:24they're mole
- 00:22:26people
- 00:22:28just between us you may want to lay off
- 00:22:31this grind up the bisi stuff it's a bit
- 00:22:35off-putting even to fellow Communists
- 00:22:38possibly if you have been it's only
- 00:22:41because you're a double agent acting in
- 00:22:44furtherance of your long-term objectives
- 00:22:48listen to this do you really think
- 00:22:50you're the kind of person an underground
- 00:22:53communist cell would entrust with a
- 00:22:55mission that requires such discretion
- 00:22:58regardless what's past is past you need
- 00:23:02to look forward to the work of building
- 00:23:04communism for all they're not mole
- 00:23:07people they're your comrades in the
- 00:23:10Eternal class struggle it's your task to
- 00:23:13find and join them let your nose guide
- 00:23:17you detective yes fortunately Communists
- 00:23:21are known to have a very distinct smell
- 00:23:24we really have no idea what they're
- 00:23:26talking about there's no linkage between
- 00:23:29ideology and allf faction
- 00:23:35failure that's why you're perfect for
- 00:23:37the job no one's got a better nose for
- 00:23:40failure than you Harry what you're
- 00:23:42smelling is your own body odor of course
- 00:23:45nothing a shower and change of clothes
- 00:23:47couldn't fix none of this is edited by
- 00:23:50the way the game literally calls you a
- 00:23:53smelly failure that wants to murder rich
- 00:23:56people out of jealousy if you choose
- 00:23:58communism sure may not be apparent at
- 00:24:00first but some details come together in
- 00:24:02a way that does nothing but make
- 00:24:03communism look awful because disco
- 00:24:05elesium at large is about how ideology
- 00:24:07is poison and extremists no matter the
- 00:24:09flag do nothing but bring misery to the
- 00:24:11world they add nothing to others around
- 00:24:13them they can only take and some become
- 00:24:15so delusional they convince themselves
- 00:24:17they're the hero of the story even as
- 00:24:19they rape and murder it's something that
- 00:24:20really does explain a lot of the other
- 00:24:22elements if you look at from the angle
- 00:24:23of ignore the politics because they just
- 00:24:25waste time well yeah it's true true
- 00:24:28every ideology in the game commits the
- 00:24:29exact same sins down to the tea from the
- 00:24:32moralist to the Communist to the ultra
- 00:24:33liberals they all do the same thing and
- 00:24:36just excuse it in different ways Harry
- 00:24:38latches on to various ideologies in the
- 00:24:39game because he's a broken insane man
- 00:24:42desperate to reach any shore that will
- 00:24:44keep him from drowning beaten down by
- 00:24:45personal tragedy and simply dealing with
- 00:24:47too much from his job as a detective in
- 00:24:50a district that was particularly violent
- 00:24:52Harry isn't actually a political guy he
- 00:24:54just latches on the politics in the game
- 00:24:56as a way to give himself purpose because
- 00:24:58without it without the ideals those
- 00:25:00politics bring Harry has nothing nothing
- 00:25:02beyond the case the one that only adds
- 00:25:04to his nightmares and worsening mental
- 00:25:06state it's why Harry becomes such a DI
- 00:25:08hard for whatever Road you pick because
- 00:25:10it's all Harry really has but all it
- 00:25:12does is waste time every ideology adds
- 00:25:14no details to the case or at most you
- 00:25:16would have already known what they're
- 00:25:17saying by the time you do it it's why I
- 00:25:19said you can beat the game in about 3
- 00:25:20days technically no matter what you do
- 00:25:22you will always end up being the game at
- 00:25:24at least 5 days no matter how fast you
- 00:25:26are because you're lock to one region in
- 00:25:28the city until day three and after a
- 00:25:30story moment you get a 2-day Time skip
- 00:25:32so even if you do everything perfectly
- 00:25:34you'll always end up with a time skip
- 00:25:36still the whole point is if you just
- 00:25:37knuckle down and work the case what
- 00:25:39you're on paper supposed to do you'll
- 00:25:41beat the game pretty fast but the reason
- 00:25:43it locks you to that region in the first
- 00:25:443 days is because it wants you to get
- 00:25:46lost and explore to possibly fall into
- 00:25:48temptation to an ideology and get
- 00:25:50distracted by that since there are
- 00:25:52specific time wasters that absolutely
- 00:25:54solve nothing some just directly make
- 00:25:56fun of you for picking them I mean they
- 00:25:57all make fun of you but the ending of
- 00:25:59certain Roots really Hammer home though
- 00:26:01why did you waste time on this Vibe it's
- 00:26:03why the roots that actually reveal the
- 00:26:04most about the world and what's going on
- 00:26:05has absolutely nothing to do with
- 00:26:07politics they're completely insane and
- 00:26:09sound [ __ ] not like the real
- 00:26:11factions in the game but they're the
- 00:26:13ones that are digging into the truth
- 00:26:15they're not hampered by ideology they
- 00:26:17won't throw away information because it
- 00:26:18comes from An Inconvenient Source they
- 00:26:20want the objective truth the skizo root
- 00:26:22is the one that actually reveals the
- 00:26:23most about the world and has an ending
- 00:26:25that really blows you away it's full of
- 00:26:27legitim wonder and gives a satisfying
- 00:26:29conclusion to Harry's Arc whatever Arc
- 00:26:31you yourself wanted to be it's why the
- 00:26:32political roots are so unsatisfying at
- 00:26:34least how I see it because Harry is too
- 00:26:36hampered down on ideals sold by conmen
- 00:26:38and murderers to the point he loses
- 00:26:40sight of true beauty around him of
- 00:26:42course I think I beat around the bush
- 00:26:43long enough let's actually talk about
- 00:26:45the case and what happened because it's
- 00:26:46a doozy of a mystery so what kicks
- 00:26:49everything off is the murder of Ellis
- 00:26:51cire the the names in this game are
- 00:26:53going to be really weird this is going
- 00:26:55to be a a long long running theme in
- 00:26:58this video a mercenary hired to
- 00:26:59infiltrate the dock owned by wild Pines
- 00:27:01who are currently dealing with a union
- 00:27:02strike out of the blue he's dead found
- 00:27:05lynched in a tree the obvious assumption
- 00:27:07is the union did it as they're literally
- 00:27:08bragging about the murder and the body
- 00:27:10is tied up with an industrial strap
- 00:27:12specifically used by the union you're
- 00:27:13forced to deal with the consequences of
- 00:27:15Harry's binge in the beginning of the
- 00:27:16game trying to get him sober enough to
- 00:27:18examine the body and find a way to get
- 00:27:19him out of the tree you can shoot the
- 00:27:21body out but it's a tricky shot that
- 00:27:23basically requires minmax and hand ey
- 00:27:25coordination to get it done because it's
- 00:27:27a story to push you into talking with
- 00:27:28the Union you meet with the Union boss
- 00:27:30ever Sinclair who barely hides his
- 00:27:32intentions to you the man looks talks
- 00:27:34and sounds like a rat Harry I bunked her
- 00:27:38cabin I bunked her whole boat I had
- 00:27:41cameras surveying her boat hell I even
- 00:27:43wanted to bug that thermal cap but my
- 00:27:46boy is advised against it it's very
- 00:27:48clear you're not supposed to trust him
- 00:27:49and he ropes you into doing some of his
- 00:27:50Dirty Work in order to get the body out
- 00:27:52of the tree such as opening doors to
- 00:27:54intimidate political enemies and
- 00:27:55pressuring people into signing away
- 00:27:57their property writes for a real estate
- 00:27:58scam he's planning you can also talk
- 00:28:00with the representative for wild Pines
- 00:28:01Joyce she's an interesting character as
- 00:28:04she contrasts ever art and almost every
- 00:28:05way instead of being locked away in the
- 00:28:07dock surrounded by violent Thugs and
- 00:28:09shipping containers as a makeshift
- 00:28:11Kingdom Joyce is right there out in the
- 00:28:13open sitting there at the dock on her
- 00:28:14boat she's also much more upfront with
- 00:28:16Harry about the situation sure she's a
- 00:28:18corporate negotiator she can't show
- 00:28:19every card close to her chest but she's
- 00:28:21willing to show a lot and even ACC as
- 00:28:23the introduction to the larger setting
- 00:28:24you find out while Pines has dealt with
- 00:28:26this Union before as they've had
- 00:28:28previous strikes at first they're able
- 00:28:30to actually work things out and they're
- 00:28:31able to get pay raises better benefits
- 00:28:33and make things better for all their
- 00:28:34employees but now they're completely
- 00:28:36clamped down now before anything you can
- 00:28:38ask her about where you are the history
- 00:28:40of the region and basic concepts of
- 00:28:42reality also this one weird check that's
- 00:28:44impossible to pass for now I mean that's
- 00:28:46like that's kind of cool still Joyce is
- 00:28:48Shady and she flat out admits to you she
- 00:28:50is Shady and needs your help while
- 00:28:51everard seems to be filled with childish
- 00:28:53Glee at the possibility of escalating
- 00:28:54violence Joyce is trying to limit the
- 00:28:56casualties as best as as possible sure
- 00:28:58wild Pines hired a notorious mercenary
- 00:29:00group but Joyce herself remarks that
- 00:29:02they're out of control and no longer
- 00:29:03following orders for reasons you
- 00:29:05discover later and really reveal the
- 00:29:07importance of solving the mystery all
- 00:29:09you know is that the union are on the
- 00:29:11verge of being put against the wall and
- 00:29:12shot literally The Mercenaries want
- 00:29:14blood and will get it the analogy Joyce
- 00:29:17uses is that it's like a wasp barging
- 00:29:19into a beehive even if the bees win
- 00:29:21it'll cost too many lives that will go
- 00:29:22down as a historic Slaughter she also
- 00:29:24has some suspicions about the strike
- 00:29:26itself they've been going for months and
- 00:29:28show no signs of letting up they're not
- 00:29:29running out of money despite squeezing
- 00:29:31every other business in the city dry to
- 00:29:33fund them also their demands make no
- 00:29:35sense at first they could work with the
- 00:29:36Union to negotiate better pay and better
- 00:29:38conditions all the usual stuff but now
- 00:29:40they're just screaming their heads off
- 00:29:41about all workers and member of the
- 00:29:42board an impossible demand even they
- 00:29:44know can't get done since it would mean
- 00:29:46all 2,000 some OD workers in reval alone
- 00:29:49would be consulted anytime the board
- 00:29:51members want to make policy for the
- 00:29:52company disregarding every other Port
- 00:29:54they own it makes no sense if the union
- 00:29:55isn't budging so you have a gr
- 00:29:57retaliation from The Mercenaries and the
- 00:29:59union is just pretending nothing has
- 00:30:00changed you can investigate a lead that
- 00:30:02shows the union is funding their strike
- 00:30:03through drug trafficking using the port
- 00:30:05to move chemical ingredients for
- 00:30:06narcotics through the city when you
- 00:30:08confront everard about it he just laughs
- 00:30:10you off and says it's all for Black
- 00:30:11Market meds stuff to get to the poror
- 00:30:13the unfortunate and I sincerely hope
- 00:30:15nobody believed him because no that's
- 00:30:17not why it's because they're getting
- 00:30:19money from crime Lords to ship them
- 00:30:20ingredients it's by drugs which were
- 00:30:22already a problem explodes in Revol to
- 00:30:25the point even children like Kuno are
- 00:30:26turned into the junkies because while
- 00:30:28guys like The Hardy Boys insist they
- 00:30:29have a handle on drugs in the city all
- 00:30:31they did was move the prog to gemrock
- 00:30:33which is 20 minutes away and damn near
- 00:30:35every character you talk to is a casual
- 00:30:36drug user they've done irreparable
- 00:30:38damage to the city and somehow convinced
- 00:30:40themselves they did the right thing
- 00:30:41which is a very common theme with this
- 00:30:43Union yeah the union is [ __ ] stupid
- 00:30:46this is not up for debate the union are
- 00:30:47a bunch of violent self-centered
- 00:30:49egotistical hypocritical morons except
- 00:30:51Leo Leo's just a good dude container
- 00:30:54container I'll turn you nice and red
- 00:30:57container container put the logos on
- 00:31:01still the union are the de facto
- 00:31:02villains of the story now obviously if
- 00:31:04you have different sociopolitical
- 00:31:06opinions you might view things
- 00:31:07differently but these guys make my skin
- 00:31:09crawl because they just barge ahead with
- 00:31:11zero regard for collateral damage hell
- 00:31:13sometimes they specifically make plans
- 00:31:15around there being collateral damage
- 00:31:17it's especially bad when you look
- 00:31:18further into the case now the absolute
- 00:31:20most incompetent true dumb asses of the
- 00:31:22story are The Hardy Boys I hate these
- 00:31:24people to levels that cannot be
- 00:31:26described the Hardy Boys are the more
- 00:31:28openly militant faction of the Union led
- 00:31:30by Titus Hardy and his brother Angus
- 00:31:32though Angus is much more passive Titus
- 00:31:34is a foulmouthed hyper aggressive openly
- 00:31:36corrupt man that from the word go Works
- 00:31:38to make your life difficult keeping the
- 00:31:40other boys in line to prevent them from
- 00:31:41giving testimony and openly threatening
- 00:31:43you for investigating the case now you
- 00:31:45can tell him about the ultraviolent
- 00:31:47mercenary team that wants revenge for
- 00:31:49their comrade but he blows you off
- 00:31:51saying the union has more men and guns
- 00:31:53except the [ __ ] the mercs are packing is
- 00:31:55military grade and they experienced kill
- 00:31:57ERS that joke and laugh about some of
- 00:31:58the crimes against humanity they get up
- 00:32:00to they're simply tougher and scarier
- 00:32:03but Titus refuses to budge on the matter
- 00:32:05keeping up his peacock tactic in the
- 00:32:06hopes you go away and it's especially
- 00:32:08bad when you do all of ard's tasks and
- 00:32:11talk to him he will lay out and no
- 00:32:13uncertain terms what his plan is he
- 00:32:16wants the situation to get violent for
- 00:32:18The Mercenaries to snap and kill
- 00:32:20everybody because then he can use their
- 00:32:22deaths as propaganda to force wild Pines
- 00:32:25out of Revol the dock will property of
- 00:32:27the union and the union will run it
- 00:32:30independently the reason they've been
- 00:32:31going so long is cuz art was hoping for
- 00:32:34a violent incident to dangle over the
- 00:32:35company's head and the drug trafficking
- 00:32:38is a double-edged sword he wants to use
- 00:32:40in order to make them too skittish to
- 00:32:41gun after the union which kind of
- 00:32:43ignores the fact the [ __ ] police
- 00:32:44might look into it you know the police
- 00:32:45who are specifically owned by the moral
- 00:32:47intern who don't want the union to be
- 00:32:49independent and want to force them back
- 00:32:51into line and the mercenary gang still
- 00:32:52wants blood for their dead man so they'd
- 00:32:54be more than gleeful to kill everybody
- 00:32:56in the union and call to death day and
- 00:32:57be pretty hard to inspire Revolution
- 00:32:59when the stories of your own crime
- 00:33:00spread the murder corruption
- 00:33:02embezzlement intimidation tactics and
- 00:33:04this is basically admitting in no
- 00:33:05uncertain terms he intends to turn the
- 00:33:07union into a cartel to become a mob boss
- 00:33:09and the king of his own kingdom everard
- 00:33:11and his brother only really care about
- 00:33:12liberating Revol in the sense that their
- 00:33:14fat asses get to sit on the throne once
- 00:33:16it's empty sadly while Pines have
- 00:33:18cooperated with what amounts to a crime
- 00:33:20syndicate for two decades however much
- 00:33:23you feed the leech the leech always
- 00:33:25hungers as much as Everett talks about
- 00:33:27how much he hates wild Pines and Joyce
- 00:33:29he does literally all the same things
- 00:33:31she does organizing murders paying
- 00:33:33people off to strike for him Joyce does
- 00:33:34openly admit she hired scabs to break
- 00:33:36down the strike but I mean she admits to
- 00:33:37it stalking Harry the waitress from the
- 00:33:39whirling Rags flat out admits she
- 00:33:41refused to call the police about the
- 00:33:42body cuz she was terrified of the Union
- 00:33:44they are a glorified Mafia one that
- 00:33:46thinks they're freeing the common man
- 00:33:48while they have their boot on their
- 00:33:49throats they're just gangsters they
- 00:33:51demand money from local businesses
- 00:33:52strangling any economic progress the
- 00:33:54city could see and avart specifically
- 00:33:56plans around on people dying his own
- 00:33:58people he's using The Hardy Boys As The
- 00:34:00Fall Guys and plans for them all to die
- 00:34:02for his War that's why Titus is so cocky
- 00:34:05about the situation he thinks everard
- 00:34:07has his back having his prized student
- 00:34:08Elizabeth who everard outright put
- 00:34:10through law school to be the Union's
- 00:34:11lawyer guide them on how to avoid police
- 00:34:13custody and the whole time everard
- 00:34:15salivating at the idea of this man being
- 00:34:16strung up just like Ellis I had guys
- 00:34:19recording and processing this
- 00:34:21information for me hell no they'd [ __ ]
- 00:34:23it up they can't do anything right I my
- 00:34:27real boys my special task force boys now
- 00:34:30for a while you are operating off the
- 00:34:32idea the union killed Ellis this
- 00:34:34supposed motive was that Ellis raped a
- 00:34:36woman named clauser and they killed him
- 00:34:37in retaliation which is a pretty big
- 00:34:39deal that could explain everything
- 00:34:41they're admitting to it ard's bragging
- 00:34:42about how it helps him and the only
- 00:34:44people had motive would be them since
- 00:34:46tensions between the mercenaries and the
- 00:34:47union have been terrible since they got
- 00:34:49there but there's something not right
- 00:34:50about the whole thing if you spec into
- 00:34:52the skitso hairy paths especially you
- 00:34:55get strange hunches stuff like being
- 00:34:56able bble to talk to the body which
- 00:34:58gives you cryptic riddles and some
- 00:34:59statements that raise an eyebrow love
- 00:35:02did me Pro Copo it was love all alone
- 00:35:06like that he was killed by communism or
- 00:35:08that he seemed to enjoy his moment of
- 00:35:09death made all the more hard to figure
- 00:35:11out with Harry being an unreliable
- 00:35:12narrator but if you keep digging you'll
- 00:35:14find some interesting details a small
- 00:35:16one being a bullet in his brain yeah
- 00:35:18Ellis was shot not hanged so now every
- 00:35:21part of the investigation is in a tail
- 00:35:22spin he was hit with a breach loading
- 00:35:24rifle round and strung up to look like a
- 00:35:26lynching so what the [ __ ] is up with
- 00:35:27that you can confront The Hardy Boys
- 00:35:29about it and they get startled like you
- 00:35:31weren't supposed to find out turns out
- 00:35:33they covered up the real cause of death
- 00:35:35well why would they do that all they did
- 00:35:37was paint a Target on their backs from
- 00:35:38The Mercenaries they took credit for a
- 00:35:40murder they didn't commit and just made
- 00:35:41the situation reval leagues worse well
- 00:35:44they did it because a woman named Ruby
- 00:35:46told them to she's actually the driver
- 00:35:48for the drug running operation who was
- 00:35:50in town when the murder happened and
- 00:35:52supposedly helped organize the cover up
- 00:35:53since the Hardy Boys had no idea what
- 00:35:55was going on and just wanted to get get
- 00:35:56Claus as far away from the mercenaries
- 00:35:58as they could it seems like Ruby is the
- 00:36:00key to everything since if her first
- 00:36:01reaction was to cover up the murder then
- 00:36:03she had to have known it was possible
- 00:36:04for it to occur maybe she even
- 00:36:06orchestrated it maybe out of personal
- 00:36:08Vendetta or a favor to everard who knows
- 00:36:11the point is Ruby is the one to look for
- 00:36:13well eventually you do find her but she
- 00:36:14has no idea what you're talking about in
- 00:36:16fact she says claz was the one who
- 00:36:18organized the cover up and she only
- 00:36:20fleed because Harry was coming to the
- 00:36:22city Ruby used to work for a Crime Boss
- 00:36:23named lauta Madre literally the [ __ ]
- 00:36:26mother or mother [ __ ] and Harry is
- 00:36:27supposedly one of his agents so Ruby
- 00:36:29assumed the case was his excuse to come
- 00:36:31to revisal and murder her now you can
- 00:36:33save Ruby and impacts the ending a bit
- 00:36:35but she runs off anyway if he try to
- 00:36:37arrest her she blows her own head off
- 00:36:38and it it it don't matter besides I have
- 00:36:40a reason why I always let her die still
- 00:36:42it's made clear Ruby didn't do this so
- 00:36:44who did well no time to think about that
- 00:36:46cuz right after all this is the
- 00:36:48mercenary tribunal yeah they weren't
- 00:36:50kidding they put the Hardy Boys against
- 00:36:52the wall and raised their guns cuz as it
- 00:36:54turns out they've been watching your
- 00:36:56investigation the whole time just like
- 00:36:58how art has ears in the city they do too
- 00:37:01and they are pissed at how it's going
- 00:37:03they didn't catch the bullet detail or
- 00:37:05Ruby's involvement and they really don't
- 00:37:07care they want blood for how their
- 00:37:09Commander was treated yeah Ellis was the
- 00:37:11[ __ ] Commander to The Mercenaries
- 00:37:13they killed the man who kept them in
- 00:37:15line and on top of that the one leading
- 00:37:17the tribunal is his [ __ ] brother
- 00:37:20adopted brother but still they grew up
- 00:37:22together and joined the military
- 00:37:24together and he's been forced to watch
- 00:37:25his brother and Commander's body rot in
- 00:37:28a tree humiliated and laughed at by the
- 00:37:30union for over a week this man is seeing
- 00:37:33red and someone is going to die for this
- 00:37:36no matter how well you do in this
- 00:37:37segment a chunk of The Hardy Boys will
- 00:37:39die the ones who for sure die no matter
- 00:37:42what are Glenn fat Angus and Theo they
- 00:37:44will die no matter how well you did or
- 00:37:46how many answers you uncovered the only
- 00:37:48ones you can say for sure are Elizabeth
- 00:37:50shanki Titus and Kim your partner that's
- 00:37:53not to say Kim dies it's just he's too
- 00:37:55wounded to reach the end game with you
- 00:37:57still the best ending of the game is
- 00:37:58only achievable if you kill every single
- 00:38:00Hardy Boy you have to fail every check
- 00:38:02you can bungle things completely let
- 00:38:04them all get Torn to
- 00:38:06Pieces okay that's not actually the best
- 00:38:08outcome yeah you want to save as many of
- 00:38:10them as you can but not going to lie
- 00:38:11every single time I play Disco elium I
- 00:38:13go out of my way to let the Hardy Boys
- 00:38:15die I sincerely hate these men they
- 00:38:17embody the innate hypocrisy the game
- 00:38:19addresses they see themselves as the
- 00:38:21true law and revisal they're the ones
- 00:38:23keeping the neighborhood together
- 00:38:24they're the ones watching out for
- 00:38:25everyone you can even pass a passive
- 00:38:27check or a voice in your head refers to
- 00:38:28Titus as potential RCM Sergeant material
- 00:38:32not just Granite tightly pack RCM
- 00:38:35Sergeant material no he already is a
- 00:38:39sergeant that's what you're feeling he
- 00:38:42just wasn't sure what you are something
- 00:38:45that doesn't have the implications I
- 00:38:48think the developers intended The Hardy
- 00:38:50Boys are [ __ ] stupid they bumbled
- 00:38:52their way into a murder they had no
- 00:38:53obligation to cover up made themselves
- 00:38:55the target of the mercenary 's wrath
- 00:38:57bragged about the murder so that the
- 00:38:58Wrath would only escalate and talked a
- 00:39:00big game of how they totally win in a
- 00:39:02confrontation against them only for them
- 00:39:04to be put up against the wall where they
- 00:39:06start pissing themselves in fear they
- 00:39:08can't be the neighborhood thugs anymore
- 00:39:10they're facing an enemy much much
- 00:39:13scarier it's easy to talk big against
- 00:39:15two detectives who are specifically
- 00:39:17trying to avoid violence but train
- 00:39:19killers that want you dead of course
- 00:39:21they finally crack it's not funny
- 00:39:22anymore it's not just [ __ ] talking in a
- 00:39:24bar anymore things got very real
- 00:39:27very fast even Titus whose entire
- 00:39:29Persona has been a toughest Nails guy
- 00:39:30who doesn't blink in a fight is in a
- 00:39:32complete Panic suddenly all their
- 00:39:34tactics don't work Union solidarity is
- 00:39:36out the window no one's coming to defend
- 00:39:38them as much as they talk about having
- 00:39:40more guys that the union stands together
- 00:39:42they're all Brothers all of Revol sees
- 00:39:44them as Heroes Suddenly It's just them
- 00:39:46out there put against the wall alone
- 00:39:49because everard wants them dead they're
- 00:39:51in the middle of the ocean and about to
- 00:39:53get dragged down into the pitch black it
- 00:39:55sounds like you want to keep keep them
- 00:39:56alive just to spite everard and you're
- 00:39:58not wrong but there's some major holes
- 00:40:00with this plan that the game just sort
- 00:40:02of hopes you ignore the one thing
- 00:40:04keeping a total Massacre from occurring
- 00:40:06is the idea that the company still has
- 00:40:08enough Humanity to avoid just wiping the
- 00:40:09Union off the face of the Earth which is
- 00:40:11a paradox how can the company be this
- 00:40:13evil immoral Beast that Stomps on human
- 00:40:15rights yet also wants to avoid killing
- 00:40:17as many people as possible the entire
- 00:40:18plan hinged on Joy convincing the rest
- 00:40:20of the board members not to declare war
- 00:40:22which is not a guarantee and you even
- 00:40:24see signs it's not going to work for one
- 00:40:26a full-blown moral intern agent is in
- 00:40:28revisal a guy who directly works for the
- 00:40:31Coalition sure it's impli is there
- 00:40:33because of closier since she's a former
- 00:40:34corpo spy who ran away from the life and
- 00:40:36went into hiding but you really think
- 00:40:38he's not watching the situation at large
- 00:40:40especially since art is planning on
- 00:40:41snowballing this into larger and larger
- 00:40:43strikes against the company until all
- 00:40:45docks are liberated from Wild Pines the
- 00:40:47M inter turn being in Revol just shows
- 00:40:49that they're letting things play out
- 00:40:50because they know this scheme is [ __ ]
- 00:40:51ridiculous thought up by wannabe
- 00:40:53gangsters drunk off their own influence
- 00:40:55or the idea that you know while Pines
- 00:40:57wouldn't just throw him under the bus
- 00:40:58because he's the guy orchestrating
- 00:41:00literally everything and admits to it
- 00:41:01more than once to Harry who is a
- 00:41:03detective they can easily say art was
- 00:41:05the one who did everything and they have
- 00:41:07no responsibility and he went rogue
- 00:41:09which is literally what happened yours
- 00:41:11takes the [ __ ] cake and the tribunal
- 00:41:13serves as a brutal lesson when you want
- 00:41:15to play in the big leagues you get a
- 00:41:17harsh reminder of what that means
- 00:41:19suddenly You're Not Strong arming cops
- 00:41:20in a dirty bar you're thrown against the
- 00:41:22wall of that dirty bar and have a gunpo
- 00:41:24at your head by paramilitaries is it
- 00:41:26ethical is it right is it something the
- 00:41:28good guys do no but it's like picking a
- 00:41:31fight with the sunrise you were never
- 00:41:32going to win as much as ever talks about
- 00:41:34how he has every variable planned out he
- 00:41:36really doesn't the one thing keeping him
- 00:41:37breathing is just a moral intern
- 00:41:39thinking he's not worth the bother of
- 00:41:40killing he can play Tyrant all he wants
- 00:41:42in revish all who cares there's
- 00:41:44multitudes of different solutions to
- 00:41:45kill him and he doesn't leave his Harbor
- 00:41:47Because deep down he knows this he has
- 00:41:49to stay in the one area he has complete
- 00:41:51control over because anywhere else is
- 00:41:52too dangerous he's a fat breathing
- 00:41:54Target he says oh I'm too old and fat
- 00:41:57it's more fun to stay here but that's
- 00:41:58just cope really he knows he's a Target
- 00:42:00he knows the mor Turner watching him so
- 00:42:02he just doesn't want to leave of course
- 00:42:04he'd know he uses their tactics bugging
- 00:42:06rooms stalking potential troublemakers
- 00:42:08keeping a tight circle of loyalists he
- 00:42:10uses the Hardy Boys as the public
- 00:42:12loyalists but even he refers to them as
- 00:42:14incompetent everard doesn't want people
- 00:42:15to know who his actual Inner Circle is
- 00:42:17because then they're vulnerable their
- 00:42:19names on a kill list they're human
- 00:42:20beings that can be replaced with other
- 00:42:22human beings some that might not be as
- 00:42:24loyal to art as he wants it's a very
- 00:42:26interesting aspect of the story The
- 00:42:27sheer delusion that the union holds
- 00:42:29about the future the hypocrisy of saying
- 00:42:31they're for the Common Man and openly
- 00:42:33talking about throwing nameless bodies
- 00:42:34at are former military in the hopes they
- 00:42:36can win through attrition they talk
- 00:42:37about how great the union is as a
- 00:42:39concept yet even they know they can't
- 00:42:41win in a fair fight all their propaganda
- 00:42:43is Bluster nobody really wants a war to
- 00:42:45kick off even after the tribunal happens
- 00:42:47you notice something interesting while
- 00:42:49everard is swearing it will lead to a
- 00:42:50war and everything will turn out how he
- 00:42:52wants nothing happens the streets are
- 00:42:54empty the harbor is forced to go into
- 00:42:56lockdown there's no Grand Uprising no
- 00:42:58forceful ousting of wild Pines no mobs
- 00:43:00in the streets the union tucks its tail
- 00:43:02and runs back to home territory sure it
- 00:43:04might not happen overnight but there's
- 00:43:06just a vibe in the back of my mind that
- 00:43:07things did not exactly live up to the
- 00:43:09ideals ever art had in mind hell the
- 00:43:11commander isn't even punished if you get
- 00:43:13the outcome where he lives through the
- 00:43:14tribunal he's taken to a former military
- 00:43:17hospital with full coverage due to his
- 00:43:18insurance plan so it seems like after
- 00:43:20the tribunal you're completely [ __ ]
- 00:43:22all the potential suspects are dead you
- 00:43:24can't really talk to anybody anymore and
- 00:43:26you can't even report the shooting to
- 00:43:27the RCM turns out the union are jamming
- 00:43:29your Communications to hide what
- 00:43:31happened once again leaning towards the
- 00:43:33idea art was bullshitting and his plan
- 00:43:35is up in smoke cuz if art wanted The
- 00:43:37Hardy Boys dead why not let the RCM
- 00:43:39report what happened if it was to
- 00:43:41prevent them from getting back up well
- 00:43:42they're a bit too late on that front
- 00:43:44there's multiple RCM officers there and
- 00:43:46if they're scared of RCM officers
- 00:43:48showing up then just imagine a whole
- 00:43:49platoon of moral intern mercenaries
- 00:43:51they'll just break into the harbor and
- 00:43:52kill everybody there 2,000 Dock Workers
- 00:43:54more like 2,000 enemy comat combatants
- 00:43:56you can sneak into the dock from a shed
- 00:43:58behind the bar these people are going to
- 00:43:59die this whole plot seems like it's made
- 00:44:01up by a guy desperate to think of
- 00:44:02himself as a master tactician and he's
- 00:44:05not that at all he has no idea the deps
- 00:44:07of what he's waiting into and really
- 00:44:09there's still a major question left
- 00:44:11unanswered who shot Ellis we still don't
- 00:44:14know who actually killed the guy that
- 00:44:15kicked this whole thing off nobody even
- 00:44:17heard the shot Claus swear she only
- 00:44:19heard glass breaking and none of the
- 00:44:20Hardy Boys heard gunfire that night so
- 00:44:22the shot couldn't have come from the bar
- 00:44:24itself something that's a tad obvious
- 00:44:25when examine the bullet and see it's a
- 00:44:27rifle round meaning the sniper did it
- 00:44:28but you're forced to operate off a
- 00:44:30theory that the shot came from the
- 00:44:31balcony not one of the be story threads
- 00:44:32not going to lie as stated this this
- 00:44:34does have some plot holes the whole
- 00:44:36thing with Ruby thinking you're working
- 00:44:37for a Crime Boss that literally goes
- 00:44:39nowhere I'm not even kidding that
- 00:44:40literally goes [ __ ] nowhere as soon
- 00:44:42as you raise the question you get one
- 00:44:44little tease that maybe Harry is then
- 00:44:47the ending completely shuts that down
- 00:44:48and goes no you will never work for them
- 00:44:50so why did Ruby think you're working for
- 00:44:51a Crime Boss and they tease the idea
- 00:44:53that maybe Harry did work for a Crime
- 00:44:55Boss only for them to pull the rug out
- 00:44:57from under you and go no that's stupid
- 00:44:58and impossible at least leave the
- 00:45:00possibility open you know for [ __ ]
- 00:45:01sake if it's going to be such a massive
- 00:45:03plot point you know for the conversation
- 00:45:04with Ruby it's especially bad when you
- 00:45:06examine the ballistics and it just flat
- 00:45:07out tells you where the bullet comes
- 00:45:08from which of these lines makes the most
- 00:45:10sense for a shot
- 00:45:11trajectory I'll give you a minute yeah
- 00:45:14it's kind of obvious ain't it the answer
- 00:45:16is none of them uh all intrude on the
- 00:45:19building next to the bar and the third
- 00:45:21one especially is a completely different
- 00:45:23angle from how the shot came in yet it's
- 00:45:27treated as the right answer but I want
- 00:45:29to chalk this up to smell Europeans not
- 00:45:31understanding ballistics which is saying
- 00:45:32a lot cuz I'm not an expert on it by any
- 00:45:34means regardless you go to examine
- 00:45:35Claus's apartment and she ties a red
- 00:45:36string pointing out what direction the
- 00:45:38blow came from showing it's an island
- 00:45:40off the coast of Revol that's if you
- 00:45:42don't arrest her however if you do take
- 00:45:44her in it's implied she's killed by the
- 00:45:45moral intern I never arrest her in my
- 00:45:47playthroughs because while she's shady
- 00:45:49and did some [ __ ] up things in her
- 00:45:51past she really isn't involved with the
- 00:45:53case too much it's her idea to perform
- 00:45:55the cover up inching but that's because
- 00:45:56she was terrified of the moral intern
- 00:45:58finding her not wanting to be dragged
- 00:45:59into a deeper investigation that would
- 00:46:01expose her presence in reval but she
- 00:46:03does end up feeling guilty enough to
- 00:46:04call into the police to report the body
- 00:46:06even staying in the city longer than
- 00:46:08intended as a sort of penance to herself
- 00:46:10since she was in a relationship with
- 00:46:11Ellis and seem to truly like him she's a
- 00:46:13very paradoxical person helping set up
- 00:46:15the fake lynching to hide the murder but
- 00:46:17also not even bothering to hide details
- 00:46:18when Harry interrogates her sure she's
- 00:46:20not forthcoming about everything but she
- 00:46:22admits more than enough to let you solve
- 00:46:23the case so whether or not you arrest
- 00:46:25her is you view her character personally
- 00:46:27is she deserving a punishment or deal
- 00:46:29let her go since she's a smaller detail
- 00:46:30to a larger picture it's up to you and
- 00:46:32lends Credence to the idea that you
- 00:46:34follow your own logic still you're led
- 00:46:36to the island an old Outpost used by the
- 00:46:38communist revolutionaries during the war
- 00:46:40you can explore the Outpost for some
- 00:46:41more lore specifically a mattress you
- 00:46:43can take a nap on that reveals the truth
- 00:46:44around Harry's ex- fiance as stated
- 00:46:47their breakup was bad B enough that Dora
- 00:46:49the real name of Harry's lost love
- 00:46:51aborted their child and ran off on him
- 00:46:53leaving him and starting a new life in a
- 00:46:54completely different country she got
- 00:46:56married to a new guy and even had his
- 00:46:57child Harry never got over their last
- 00:46:59conversation dreaming it as a warped
- 00:47:01nightmare over and over again for 6
- 00:47:03years straight even imagine Dora as
- 00:47:05Dolores day a sort of Jesus Christ type
- 00:47:07figure in the setting Harry's mind warps
- 00:47:09Dora to be a literal Messiah and
- 00:47:11embodiment of beauty forever tormenting
- 00:47:13his mind you also get some revealing
- 00:47:15details in your conversation with her
- 00:47:17whatever ideology you pick in the game
- 00:47:18is referenced as Harry's desperate
- 00:47:20attempts to persuade Dora to stay and
- 00:47:22she just scufs Mo saying that she left
- 00:47:24not because of ideology but because
- 00:47:25their relationship fell to Pieces they
- 00:47:27had no money har was getting more
- 00:47:29depressed and neither were truly happy
- 00:47:31all of his Shenanigans in the game were
- 00:47:33coping mechanisms to make him forget
- 00:47:35Dora even training himself to completely
- 00:47:37black out his memories so he didn't have
- 00:47:39to think about her anymore but his
- 00:47:40subconscious always knew she was there
- 00:47:42and you have moments in the game where
- 00:47:43Harry still Pines for her it's not
- 00:47:45something you can just forget and
- 00:47:47pretend never happened he needs to truly
- 00:47:49accept she's gone and move on with his
- 00:47:51life but that's easier said than done
- 00:47:54still this is one of the highlights of
- 00:47:55the game this scene is truly emotional
- 00:47:57and you're given options on how you want
- 00:47:58Harry to react to Dora is he still
- 00:48:00hopelessly obsessed with her or will you
- 00:48:02try and push him towards letting her go
- 00:48:04and piecing himself back together it's
- 00:48:05up to you and how you view Harry some
- 00:48:07like the guy being a loser from start to
- 00:48:09finish others want to see him get his
- 00:48:11[ __ ] together and try to become a
- 00:48:12fully-fledged detective again regardless
- 00:48:14this is the final story moment before
- 00:48:16the final confrontation you find a
- 00:48:18sniper's nest that reveals that this is
- 00:48:20the island the killer resides at having
- 00:48:22such a clear view of the bar you could
- 00:48:24stare into cla's bedroom with ill if you
- 00:48:26wanted to and you finally track down the
- 00:48:28killer at a campfire and he's just an
- 00:48:31old man regressive Bourgeois henchman
- 00:48:36can't even talk like a grownup this is
- 00:48:39dross a former communist revolutionary
- 00:48:41that's been living all alone on this
- 00:48:43island for over 40 years he is
- 00:48:46exceptionally bitter about you finding
- 00:48:48him about the world about just
- 00:48:50everything dross is a man consumed by
- 00:48:52misery he barely even hides the fact
- 00:48:54he's the one who shot Ellis proudly
- 00:48:56displaying the gun and lamenting the
- 00:48:57failure of the Revolution it seems like
- 00:48:59he's a DieHard communist that killed
- 00:49:01Ellis as a political statement he's been
- 00:49:03watching Revol for decades so he's well
- 00:49:05aware of the union strike and arrival of
- 00:49:07the mercenaries Ellis and his unit were
- 00:49:09Infamous in the city for being abusive
- 00:49:11and violent so it appears dross
- 00:49:12performed a vigilante murder shooting
- 00:49:14Ellis in the mouth as he was having sex
- 00:49:16with clauser it appears everything is
- 00:49:18tied together with a nice big bow but
- 00:49:21something doesn't seem right it seems
- 00:49:23kind of small for an explanation this
- 00:49:25old man shot Ellis for shits and giggles
- 00:49:27what's up with that well that's because
- 00:49:29there is a large dialogue tree that's
- 00:49:31not here you see when you examine cla's
- 00:49:33apartment you can pass a perception tick
- 00:49:36Harry finds a dry mayel flower on the
- 00:49:38balcony May bells in the lore were used
- 00:49:40by lovers to give to each other before
- 00:49:41the men went off to war a sign that they
- 00:49:43would always care for each other
- 00:49:44something like that but specifically
- 00:49:46they were used by Communists During the
- 00:49:48Revolution not only that but you
- 00:49:50discover a secret compartment the
- 00:49:51whirling Rags the remains of a pinball
- 00:49:53arcade that went bankrupt some time ago
- 00:49:55and in that pinball arcade there's an
- 00:49:57elevator there's an entire back room to
- 00:50:00the balcony not even claz was aware of
- 00:50:02and there's footprints in the dust made
- 00:50:04very recently even a pee pole in the
- 00:50:06wall that let someone spy in her
- 00:50:07apartment at first it's safe to assume
- 00:50:09she's being watched by the moral intern
- 00:50:11she does have people trying to kill her
- 00:50:13but no it's not them it's dross he's
- 00:50:16been using that back room to stalk
- 00:50:17clauser not out of hatred at least not
- 00:50:20fully he seems like he's in love with
- 00:50:21her watching from his nest day in and
- 00:50:24day out now when I I say love take it in
- 00:50:26a much more Insidious interpretation he
- 00:50:29doesn't actually care about clauser it's
- 00:50:31a more obsessive and envious form of
- 00:50:34affection really similar to how Titus
- 00:50:36felt about her at first glance there
- 00:50:38seem to be actual connection and respect
- 00:50:40for her then she does something they
- 00:50:41don't like and they have to contain
- 00:50:43themselves not to just go up there and
- 00:50:44beat her lifeless Titus has to be talked
- 00:50:47down by Elizabeth not to do literally
- 00:50:49this when you reveal she tore apart the
- 00:50:51rape story no we just [ __ ] that's all
- 00:50:55relationship there was no [ __ ]
- 00:50:57relationship he raped her that's their
- 00:50:59relationship something is off here his
- 00:51:02anger is
- 00:51:04possessive okay enough all of this is
- 00:51:08irrelevant to your stated investigation
- 00:51:11yeah whatever [ __ ] I knew that [ __ ]
- 00:51:15[ __ ] couldn't be trusted you fit a
- 00:51:17nerve Titus is furious no more than that
- 00:51:21the loyal Titus feels
- 00:51:24betrayed the
- 00:51:26record Titus Hardy did not explicitly
- 00:51:29specify the victim as a [ __ ] nor did he
- 00:51:33say anything about trusting her no shut
- 00:51:35up and stay out of this
- 00:51:38Liz he raped her he was out of his
- 00:51:41[ __ ] mind you have no idea she's just
- 00:51:46in denial [ __ ] you don't understand
- 00:51:48the traumatic experience she's shutting
- 00:51:51down and she doesn't [ __ ] trust you
- 00:51:54yeah she she crazy you know a crazy
- 00:51:58[ __ ] you know the type she's [ __ ] up
- 00:52:02this is a diversion stay on
- 00:52:06track she wasn't raped the witness's
- 00:52:09statements were very clear L man I'm at
- 00:52:12the end of my goddamn robe with you I
- 00:52:16[ __ ] told you not to push her they go
- 00:52:19from talking about clasia like a friend
- 00:52:21or a ward they need to protect to
- 00:52:23casually calling her a [ __ ] or a crazy
- 00:52:26[ __ ] that can't be trusted showing how
- 00:52:28fast they're willing to cut someone out
- 00:52:30once they are slighted they don't even
- 00:52:32know the context behind why she denied
- 00:52:36the story whether it's being cornered or
- 00:52:39if she was never comfortable with
- 00:52:41claiming to begin with as she had a
- 00:52:43sexual relationship with the victim that
- 00:52:46never seemed to cross any lines she
- 00:52:49wasn't personally comfortable with tetus
- 00:52:52is the one pushing the rape story and
- 00:52:54it's very obviously painted by his own
- 00:52:58personal bias and possessive mentality
- 00:53:02around classi there's a common theme
- 00:53:04with clauser she just seems to bring out
- 00:53:06the worst in people they just lean on
- 00:53:08doing the worst possible things in her
- 00:53:09presence even Harry isn't immune to it
- 00:53:11out right having skill checks to just
- 00:53:13hit on her out of the blue it's not like
- 00:53:15a supernatural power or anything like
- 00:53:16that more just it's what happens when
- 00:53:18she's with people ironically the one
- 00:53:20person who didn't do this was Ellis
- 00:53:22himself in public he's boasting about
- 00:53:24killing civilians being a total monster
- 00:53:26but with claz at least according to her
- 00:53:28he became much more vulnerable and
- 00:53:30honest about himself he was completely
- 00:53:32destroyed mentally by War turned from a
- 00:53:34scared and starving orphan into a
- 00:53:35killing machine the one person who
- 00:53:37didn't become worse around her was the
- 00:53:39guy already there to begin with it might
- 00:53:41even be why they connected in the first
- 00:53:43place they just clicked due to their
- 00:53:44Mutual Natures still the point being
- 00:53:46that dross became obsessed with clauser
- 00:53:48and when he learned of her relationship
- 00:53:50with Ellis he became enraged going from
- 00:53:52affection to outright hatred for them
- 00:53:54both he shot Ellis while him and clauser
- 00:53:56were having sex specifically to punish
- 00:53:59her to traumatize her and get his
- 00:54:01revenge on her that's what caused all of
- 00:54:03this all of the violence death and
- 00:54:06tragedy a lonely old man who killed
- 00:54:09another man over a woman a woman he
- 00:54:12never knew never spoke with and didn't
- 00:54:14even know her name all out of his own
- 00:54:16hatred and misery dross is a pathetic
- 00:54:19character every single descriptor for
- 00:54:22him is pathetic he has no friends no
- 00:54:25loved ones no connection to anybody
- 00:54:27anywhere all alone drunk off his own
- 00:54:29ideology and nothing to keep him company
- 00:54:32he despises art seeing it as Bourgeois
- 00:54:34nonsense he despises people seeing them
- 00:54:36as traitors and horror sold out to the
- 00:54:38moral intern capitalists he despises
- 00:54:40other Communists seeing as non-dedicated
- 00:54:42posers that aren't willing to fight and
- 00:54:44die for the cause even if you Speck into
- 00:54:46communist Harry root he'll spend the
- 00:54:48entire conversation criticizing you for
- 00:54:50not being communist enough for his
- 00:54:51liking and most of all dross hates
- 00:54:54himself because this isn't some
- 00:54:56weathered Soldier keeping up the fight
- 00:54:58after all this time dross is a coward
- 00:55:01and a deserter during the invasion of
- 00:55:02reval he deserted his unit and hid while
- 00:55:05they were getting slaughtered coming out
- 00:55:06of hiding to realize the war was lost
- 00:55:08and all of his comrades were dead dross
- 00:55:10then runs off into the island spending
- 00:55:12decades stewing in his rage and taking
- 00:55:14out on various people in Reva he could
- 00:55:16have potentially murdered dozens of
- 00:55:18people we just don't know about reval is
- 00:55:20a particularly Rough City how many
- 00:55:21murders are unaccounted for between the
- 00:55:23rcm's thin resources and the union
- 00:55:25covering things up especially when he
- 00:55:26find out the connection between everard
- 00:55:28and dross he used him as his Hitman to
- 00:55:30kill the former Union head and put
- 00:55:32himself in the seat having her shot the
- 00:55:34day of the election and strong arming
- 00:55:36anyone who wanted to investigate and
- 00:55:38that's just the murder dross was willing
- 00:55:39to talk about there could be more bodies
- 00:55:41the story just doesn't bring up he still
- 00:55:43sees himself as a true revolutionary the
- 00:55:45only real communist Left Alive and he's
- 00:55:47just this nihilistic old Hitman who got
- 00:55:50cucked by a drug addict mercenary there
- 00:55:52are people who say they think dross is
- 00:55:53the coolest character in the story story
- 00:55:55and my question is how how is this guy
- 00:55:58cool every detail about him makes him
- 00:56:01despicable he deserted his unit and yet
- 00:56:03has the goal to say everyone else isn't
- 00:56:05commanded enough to the fight he's
- 00:56:06obsessively stalking a woman he never
- 00:56:08met and wanted to get Petty Vengeance on
- 00:56:10her when she shacked up with a guy he
- 00:56:12didn't like kicked off a powder cake
- 00:56:13situation that ended with mercenaries
- 00:56:15shooting a bunch of uninvolved
- 00:56:17bystanders something he blames you for
- 00:56:20of course you got those boys killed that
- 00:56:22it was your fault for not saving people
- 00:56:25he got killed with his actions opinions
- 00:56:27on The Hardy Boys aside it is fully 100%
- 00:56:30D's fault they were put up against the
- 00:56:31wall and shot in the first place for
- 00:56:33killing Ellis he committed the murder
- 00:56:35yet he blames you because you didn't
- 00:56:36personally save them this is who dross
- 00:56:39is he does something terrible and then
- 00:56:41blames everyone else for it even the way
- 00:56:43he words it CLA deserves to be
- 00:56:45traumatized for life because she slided
- 00:56:47some crazy old man she didn't even know
- 00:56:49existed but when dra deserted his unit
- 00:56:51you want to know what he did he wrote a
- 00:56:53criticism for himself I wrote to
- 00:56:55criticism of myself and resumed partisan
- 00:56:59duties he left his friends behind to die
- 00:57:02and his response is that he wrote an
- 00:57:03essay about how he felt bad about it and
- 00:57:05to make it all worse dross isn't even a
- 00:57:07soldier in fact he's insulted at the
- 00:57:10very notion sure he's trained to shoot a
- 00:57:12gun but he refers to himself as a
- 00:57:14political commissar this was an actual
- 00:57:16position in the Soviet Union it refers
- 00:57:18to an official from the Communist Party
- 00:57:19who was assigned to a military unit to
- 00:57:21make sure they upheld communist
- 00:57:22principles this guy was a glorified
- 00:57:25health inspector for Communists he's not
- 00:57:27a soldier it's why he abandoned his unit
- 00:57:29when [ __ ] took a turn for the worse
- 00:57:31because all he was good for was spouting
- 00:57:33ideological talking points commissars
- 00:57:35were Infamous for shooting their own men
- 00:57:40for disloyalty the fins during the
- 00:57:42winter War outright uh printed
- 00:57:45propaganda posters showing this happened
- 00:57:48to dissuade people from joining the
- 00:57:50Communists essentially warning them that
- 00:57:53they will be shot by their own commander
- 00:57:55on a whim now in the beginning
- 00:57:58executions were handled by the nkvd who
- 00:58:02ran the actual death squads in the
- 00:58:05Soviet Union and the gulags but these
- 00:58:07were phased out as World War II
- 00:58:09progressed and commissars were allowed
- 00:58:11to execute their fellow soldiers since
- 00:58:13the nkvd were seen as redundant still it
- 00:58:17was well known that executions were
- 00:58:19handled by both groups the only real
- 00:58:21difference is that the nkvd were
- 00:58:23considered a separate entity from the
- 00:58:25Army for all of his talk of solidarity
- 00:58:28and loyalty he never had an ounce of it
- 00:58:30himself he calls the dead his brothers
- 00:58:32but he never gave to shits about them
- 00:58:34it's to justify his hatred he's not
- 00:58:36angry his friends were killed he's angry
- 00:58:37the revolution failed the revolution he
- 00:58:40deserted from on top of that it's even
- 00:58:41implied he wasn't even a Frontline guy
- 00:58:43until the very end of the war saying he
- 00:58:45was pulled up due to emergency defense
- 00:58:48protocols now they do acknowledge the
- 00:58:49fall of Revel was his first battle since
- 00:58:51he was recruited in ' 07 and was
- 00:58:53stationed there in '08 so so a year of
- 00:58:55training and his first deployment being
- 00:58:56the end of the war and he did never
- 00:58:58formally finish his training but that's
- 00:59:00not much better since once again it
- 00:59:01means an entire year was wasted on
- 00:59:03training a commissar that immediately
- 00:59:05deserted the guy who was supposed to
- 00:59:06embody strict loyalty to ideology ran
- 00:59:09away as soon as he could so he was a
- 00:59:11[ __ ] Pogue dross is just a horrible
- 00:59:13person a hypocrite that wants to judge
- 00:59:15everyone else for her behaviors he does
- 00:59:17without a second thought which is
- 00:59:18actually pretty common among Communists
- 00:59:20now that I think about it you can even
- 00:59:21get him ranting about people he despises
- 00:59:23around reval which is pretty much
- 00:59:25everyone women kids any random stranger
- 00:59:28he can see as stated he doesn't see
- 00:59:30these people as individuals he thinks
- 00:59:32all of them are traitors from moving on
- 00:59:34from the revolution he's angry they
- 00:59:35aren't throwing themselves into machine
- 00:59:37guns for the struggle the struggle he
- 00:59:39himself ran away from and in particular
- 00:59:41he hates a man called Renee now Renee is
- 00:59:44a very interesting character he
- 00:59:46basically represents old school fascism
- 00:59:48he's a former royalist soldier who
- 00:59:50fought in the revolution for the other
- 00:59:51side on the side of the king he brags
- 00:59:53about the strength of the royal royal
- 00:59:54family and has nothing but disdain for
- 00:59:57Communists in fact he's willing to give
- 00:59:59you any information he has about the
- 01:00:00murder he just doesn't have any to give
- 01:00:02you think the game would make him a
- 01:00:03complete joke a crotchy old grandpa that
- 01:00:05talks about the good old days and dreams
- 01:00:07of burning crosses especially
- 01:00:08considering the game supposedly biased
- 01:00:10towards communism but that's actually
- 01:00:11not the case Renee is one of the best
- 01:00:13characters in the game you don't get a
- 01:00:14lot of details about him but he's very
- 01:00:16fleshed out as a human being instead of
- 01:00:18being a parody Rene is basically the
- 01:00:20polar opposite of dross not just
- 01:00:22politically but in literally every
- 01:00:24single way while Dr was a commissar
- 01:00:26Renee was an actual Soldier he fought on
- 01:00:29the front lines even winning decorations
- 01:00:31for bravery not only that but he was
- 01:00:33crippled saving commanding officer the
- 01:00:35cousin to the king the whole unit hated
- 01:00:36because he was basically incompetent
- 01:00:38Renee despite also hating him had his
- 01:00:40knee broken pulling the man to safety
- 01:00:42while he lost his jaw the man survived
- 01:00:44and held Renee in high regard for the
- 01:00:46rest of the war he was the commanding
- 01:00:48officer and I was on duty just doing my
- 01:00:51job shouldn't hand out medals for that
- 01:00:5513 months later I received the son for
- 01:00:58distinguished service it's not worth
- 01:01:00mentioning he also has friends Renee has
- 01:01:03always seen playing ball with another
- 01:01:05old man in the city and the two are
- 01:01:06legitimately best friends growing up
- 01:01:09together and staying in touch for over
- 01:01:1080 years Renee is still living in reval
- 01:01:13he's still a part of the city its people
- 01:01:15he even works as a security guard for
- 01:01:16the union he absolutely hates the union
- 01:01:19and how Shady they are but he puts his
- 01:01:20opinions aside to make a living you even
- 01:01:23find out he loved a woman engaged to a
- 01:01:25childhood friend he sadly had to leave
- 01:01:26to go fight in the war where she was
- 01:01:28promptly stolen by his best friend but
- 01:01:30since the three were together since
- 01:01:31childhood she couldn't commit to either
- 01:01:33man in fact they all had a running joke
- 01:01:35she was basically married to both of
- 01:01:36them though Renee obviously is still
- 01:01:38bitter about that memory he did truly
- 01:01:40love her it already got ugly nearly 80
- 01:01:43years ago when the Tre of us were just
- 01:01:46learning to walk and talk you stole her
- 01:01:49from me well technically you stole her
- 01:01:53from me because would been pretty close
- 01:01:56ever since you two had that falling out
- 01:01:58however the ink you spilled over a
- 01:02:01pretty yellow dress we were just boys
- 01:02:04then this was different you no point
- 01:02:08starting this all over again for the
- 01:02:11thousandth and the first time especially
- 01:02:14when we have company when she died the
- 01:02:17two of them grieved her and when Renee
- 01:02:18later dies of a heart attack his best
- 01:02:20friend is grieving his loss as well
- 01:02:22Renee had an impact in the world he had
- 01:02:25people who cared that he was there and
- 01:02:26enjoyed his presence in spite of his
- 01:02:28attitude dross on the other hand has
- 01:02:30none of these things in fact he seems to
- 01:02:33have a particular hatred for Renee for
- 01:02:35all of this he talks about how much he
- 01:02:37wanted to shoot Renee that he was saving
- 01:02:38him for a special occasion but he just
- 01:02:40watched him for decades in fact when you
- 01:02:43tell him that Renee died of a heart
- 01:02:45attack dross breaks down it ends the
- 01:02:47dialogue tree and he can't even approach
- 01:02:48the subject again Renee was admired even
- 01:02:50by a mortal enemy who can't accept the
- 01:02:52idea that the last symbol of his
- 01:02:54struggle just died of a heart attack an
- 01:02:56old man content with his life whether or
- 01:02:58not it was admiration or jealousy I
- 01:03:00don't know but dross Couldn't Shoot
- 01:03:02Renee for some reason probably because
- 01:03:04he just couldn't accept the idea the one
- 01:03:06true fascist he hated had a better life
- 01:03:08than him had everything draw through
- 01:03:10away and just refused to ever get back
- 01:03:12Renee didn't waste his life in
- 01:03:13ideological hatred living on an island
- 01:03:16all by himself I hope you guys are
- 01:03:17realizing why I say this game isn't as
- 01:03:19sympathetic to Communism as parts of the
- 01:03:21fan base would have you believe in fact
- 01:03:23a lot of the Communist characters in the
- 01:03:24game are pretty horrendous human beings
- 01:03:26they're murderers stalkers and plain and
- 01:03:28simple just thugs they're Hypocrites
- 01:03:30using all the same tactics as their
- 01:03:31enemies yet judging them for it they
- 01:03:33steal money Strongarm people ruin entire
- 01:03:36communities then have the goall to say
- 01:03:38everyone else isn't doing enough to make
- 01:03:40things better Gary the crypto fascist
- 01:03:42isn't even targeted for his political
- 01:03:46beliefs art gladly works with measure
- 01:03:50head who is also considered a fascist
- 01:03:52due to his beliefs and he takes it a
- 01:03:54step further by being the violent
- 01:03:57enforcer guarding the way into the
- 01:03:58harbor an avowed racial supremacist
- 01:04:01willing to attack people on the Union's
- 01:04:04orders it's essentially like hiring a
- 01:04:07Neo-Nazi gang for security the only
- 01:04:09reason Gary is targeted is because he is
- 01:04:12investigating Art's drug ring putting
- 01:04:15himself at risk solely because he knows
- 01:04:18it's wrong and is destroying the
- 01:04:20neighborhood another case of the fascist
- 01:04:23straw man being a better person than the
- 01:04:25supposedly puffed up Communists now I
- 01:04:27know some of you guys are going what
- 01:04:29about the Communist students aren't they
- 01:04:30a good example of Communism to that I'll
- 01:04:32say sure at first they seem to be just
- 01:04:35two dumb college students that got
- 01:04:36wrapped up in communism and are tackling
- 01:04:38it with all the Zeal of a 20-some
- 01:04:40worlded who thinks they figured out how
- 01:04:41the world works but there's some
- 01:04:43nefarious implications with them for one
- 01:04:45they speak in buzzwords their language
- 01:04:47are just terms they pulled from books
- 01:04:49they've read and with no actual
- 01:04:50definition to them one thing you learn
- 01:04:52quickly at University is that you're not
- 01:04:54going to find a real education in any
- 01:04:56lecture hall or discussion seminar we
- 01:04:59are post attendance basically dropouts
- 01:05:01Harry has to outright past checks not to
- 01:05:03drift off and boredom cuz he has no idea
- 01:05:05what they're talking about and as you
- 01:05:06talk to them they discuss the history of
- 01:05:08Communism in the region it was literally
- 01:05:10intended to be a replacement for
- 01:05:12religion taking the zealotry and
- 01:05:13refocusing it away from Eternal
- 01:05:15salvation and instead on making a better
- 01:05:17World the game Compares communism to a
- 01:05:20religion and the fan base expects you to
- 01:05:22think of this as a good thing cuz with
- 01:05:24the religion comparison dropped you now
- 01:05:26have to address the elephant in the room
- 01:05:28the revolution where every side were
- 01:05:30[ __ ] animals to each other and did
- 01:05:31terrible things with the mindset this
- 01:05:33was intended as a spiritual war the
- 01:05:36Communists are now a different Beast
- 01:05:37altogether this isn't just political
- 01:05:39factions fighting this was a war of
- 01:05:41zealotry forcing itself on the rest of
- 01:05:43the world a cult collapsed the royal
- 01:05:45family and forced everybody into a
- 01:05:47commune one that tried to build a
- 01:05:48nuclear reactor in a major city and
- 01:05:50ended up causing Chernobyl by the way
- 01:05:52reaffirming that Communists can't even
- 01:05:53boil water correctly they violently
- 01:05:55overthrow a nation talk about how all of
- 01:05:57mankind needs to follow their religion
- 01:05:59and they were shocked the Coalition
- 01:06:00stomped them down and if you actually
- 01:06:02listen to what the students are saying
- 01:06:03they are insane one of them even drops
- 01:06:06hints that they want to perform another
- 01:06:07Revolution but that doesn't mean we can
- 01:06:09simply give up especially then and of
- 01:06:12course we'll be shooting right back even
- 01:06:15more death and suffering for something
- 01:06:16doomed to fail they even Ed one of their
- 01:06:18members for saying hey not every idea
- 01:06:20from the capitalist is a Bad Thing their
- 01:06:22methods around [ __ ] rotation sound
- 01:06:25like a good thing to follow it was
- 01:06:27unbelievable he said turnips don't care
- 01:06:30if they are grown by Communists
- 01:06:32moralists or veran they go just the same
- 01:06:35basically he was rejecting the whole
- 01:06:37Foundation of infr materialist Theory
- 01:06:40yeah they thrw the guy out for saying
- 01:06:41you should Farm your crops correctly
- 01:06:43because he wasn't thinking of things
- 01:06:44with an infr materialist lens what is
- 01:06:47infr materialism the power of belief I'm
- 01:06:50not even joking simply that under
- 01:06:52suitably revolutionary condition
- 01:06:54conditions crop yields naturally
- 01:06:56increase relative to non-revolutionary
- 01:06:58crops which Morris somehow has the gold
- 01:07:01to deny it's the idea of putting so much
- 01:07:03faith into something they manifest it
- 01:07:05into reality so their idea after the
- 01:07:07global Revolution is to throw out all
- 01:07:09the documented methods to farm crops and
- 01:07:11just believe they can grow turnips this
- 01:07:13is how the holer started you [ __ ]
- 01:07:15morons the big thing with the students
- 01:07:17is that they're trying to build a tower
- 01:07:18out of matchboxes and use their belief
- 01:07:20in infr materialism to keep it standing
- 01:07:22since it's built in a way that's guarant
- 01:07:24to fall apart it's this Whimsical moment
- 01:07:25where it looks like this time it's going
- 01:07:27to work you can get the ball rolling on
- 01:07:28true
- 01:07:29[Music]
- 01:07:33R you know what fitting now if you fully
- 01:07:36SPC into communism the end of the quest
- 01:07:37line is the tower stays up fans say that
- 01:07:40this is proed communism is possible but
- 01:07:42this relies on turning Harry into a
- 01:07:43communist Zealot a mentally unstable man
- 01:07:46willing to work with murderers and
- 01:07:47thieves turned into a zealot that thinks
- 01:07:49he can grow turn-ups through the power
- 01:07:50of belief the tower collapses at the end
- 01:07:53anyway and the main student comes up
- 01:07:57with the excuse that it was supposed to
- 01:07:59happen so they should believe that's why
- 01:08:01it fell essentially demanding uh they
- 01:08:04rewrite history so he can keep up his
- 01:08:06ideological delusions now some of you
- 01:08:09guys might be going hey wait a minute
- 01:08:11what about the pale couldn't that affect
- 01:08:13the material world to those unaware I
- 01:08:15brought up a border line impossible
- 01:08:16check earlier in the video you can ask
- 01:08:18Joyce that something in the world
- 01:08:19doesn't feel right you can't say what
- 01:08:21but Harry just instinctively knows
- 01:08:23there's something out there and there is
- 01:08:25the pale is an Indescribable force in
- 01:08:26the setting it's this kind of gray cloud
- 01:08:29or force or whatever it is that just
- 01:08:32seems to affect all natural laws history
- 01:08:35Blends together the human mind is thrown
- 01:08:37into every memory all at once in the
- 01:08:40deepest layers of the pale Concepts like
- 01:08:42numbers stop working you get signs of
- 01:08:44the pale spreading in Reva in the church
- 01:08:46where a ho in reality blocks all sound
- 01:08:48the doomed commercial area where every
- 01:08:50business that opens up there goes
- 01:08:51bankrupt regardless of what happens even
- 01:08:53even a mysterious phone number playing a
- 01:08:55call from over a 100 years ago Lori
- 01:08:57drivers experienced regular pale
- 01:08:59exposure and Ruby makes a device that
- 01:09:01attempts to harness the pale and use it
- 01:09:03as a weapon there's even a cargo
- 01:09:04container in the dock that's used by a
- 01:09:06billionaire whose face warps light
- 01:09:08around him the guy is a walking talking
- 01:09:10Beacon of the pale now the game tries to
- 01:09:13say something else about the guy that he
- 01:09:14just has so much money that reality is
- 01:09:16breaking down around him cuz it feeds
- 01:09:18into the Communist student thing but I'd
- 01:09:19hedge a safer bet that since he travels
- 01:09:22around a lot he's been exposed to the
- 01:09:23pale so much his physical body is now a
- 01:09:25beacon for it still the pale seems to
- 01:09:27imply that there is a force out there
- 01:09:29that can manifest true communism that
- 01:09:31turn-ups will grow and the tower stays
- 01:09:33up this time but that's not how that
- 01:09:35works infr materialism relies on
- 01:09:37everyone putting their faith into the
- 01:09:39idea it will work so what do you do with
- 01:09:41the people that are more skeptical like
- 01:09:42the guy asking about turn-ups for a
- 01:09:44small scale book club they just boot him
- 01:09:46out from the group but what about a
- 01:09:47larger scale a town or a nation that's
- 01:09:50millions of people potentially all of
- 01:09:52which need to be put in complete faith
- 01:09:54in the idea that these ideas will work
- 01:09:56if something goes wrong buildings
- 01:09:58collapsing or crops failing who's the
- 01:10:00first to be blamed the people who didn't
- 01:10:01believe hard enough a purity spiral will
- 01:10:04begin to weed out the ones who aren't
- 01:10:05showing complete loyalty to the idea of
- 01:10:07Communism there's even hints of it in
- 01:10:08the dialogue the two students write
- 01:10:10articles for a communist newspaper
- 01:10:12bankrolled by the Union in it are
- 01:10:14articles denouncing things like car
- 01:10:15races as Bourgeois exploitation
- 01:10:17something that Kim outright mentions
- 01:10:19it's very obvious they've never even set
- 01:10:21foot in a car I can imagine something
- 01:10:23tells me there's not exactly a glut of
- 01:10:25young communist teaching to write about
- 01:10:27tiptop for Lee if I had to wager I'd say
- 01:10:31they've never even seen the inside of a
- 01:10:33motor much less a motor race I take
- 01:10:36whatever they write with a large grain
- 01:10:38of salt but the point is they say these
- 01:10:40must be banned you can't even enjoy car
- 01:10:42races in these two [ __ ] perfect
- 01:10:44world you can't enjoy art you can't
- 01:10:46enjoy sports you're just forced to put
- 01:10:48unending unyielding loyalty to the idea
- 01:10:50of Communism you can't be human so the
- 01:10:52obvious question remains Ms what about
- 01:10:54family one of the students says that
- 01:10:55he's a communist because he wants a
- 01:10:57better world for his mother but right
- 01:10:58there he has a distraction he's not
- 01:11:00putting unyielding faith into communism
- 01:11:02he's putting faith into the idea that
- 01:11:04things will get better for his family if
- 01:11:06something goes wrong and the Purity
- 01:11:07spiral begins he's immediately a Target
- 01:11:09why was he thinking of his mother why
- 01:11:11wasn't he thinking of everyone's mother
- 01:11:13why isn't he more loyal is he really so
- 01:11:15preoccupied with his own family that he
- 01:11:16wasn't thinking of the greater good this
- 01:11:18isn't a point I grabed out from under
- 01:11:19ard's massive fat ass this is something
- 01:11:22that actually happened during both
- 01:11:23Stalin and Ma's rise to power the two
- 01:11:25encourag children to report their
- 01:11:27parents to the state if they showed
- 01:11:28signs of discontent they tore apart the
- 01:11:30idea of familial loyalty solely so their
- 01:11:33people would only worship them you can't
- 01:11:35enjoy anything under communism you can't
- 01:11:37think about anything under communism
- 01:11:39only endless undying obsession with the
- 01:11:41system which at that point what the [ __ ]
- 01:11:43even are you a drone a worker ant denied
- 01:11:46your own individuality by [ __ ] who
- 01:11:48swear up and down that they freed you
- 01:11:50from your shackles which they say as
- 01:11:52they're locking the chains AR right
- 01:11:53right around your own neck it's
- 01:11:55disgusting it completely denies your own
- 01:11:57Humanity you might say this is an
- 01:11:58overreaction that this is just them
- 01:12:00encouraging you to see things through a
- 01:12:02Marxist lens oh I said sorry I meant
- 01:12:04mazovian lens but that lens is saying
- 01:12:06these things are bad and should be
- 01:12:07removed from society it's saying you can
- 01:12:09grow turnips if you just believe they
- 01:12:10will grow and adding water and sunlight
- 01:12:12to the crop is just the capitalist
- 01:12:14propaganda made to enslave you the
- 01:12:15religion comparison really is a Smoking
- 01:12:18Gun in a lot of ways because it reveals
- 01:12:20the Communists in the game to be
- 01:12:22Shameless zealots their God is the
- 01:12:24commune their sin is reactionary
- 01:12:26responses apostates of the Bourgeois
- 01:12:28hell dross is basically a priest just
- 01:12:30one that spouts communism instead of
- 01:12:32religion it promises Eternal salvation
- 01:12:35in the form of a better world while also
- 01:12:36saying the struggle is never ending
- 01:12:38until the entire planet is spouting
- 01:12:39their Doctrine it's an ideology of
- 01:12:41slavery and Conquest under the guise of
- 01:12:43humanitarianism and Liberation in the
- 01:12:45whole time you have men like Evar
- 01:12:47killing anyone who gets in his way and
- 01:12:49turning the city into a cartel state
- 01:12:51wild Pines and the Coalition aren't the
- 01:12:52heroes by any definition but that
- 01:12:54doesn't mean for a second the union or
- 01:12:55Draw are any better they're exactly is
- 01:12:58bloodthirsty and nihilistic something
- 01:13:00actually touched upon in the game After
- 01:13:02the Revolution the pale across the world
- 01:13:04grew larger it's still continuing to
- 01:13:06grow larger the way Society fought off
- 01:13:08the pale in the beginning was by
- 01:13:09building places of worship churches
- 01:13:11since they would give people spiritual
- 01:13:12fulfillment and allowed for Humanity to
- 01:13:14save off the pale since that's what it
- 01:13:16is human nihilism entropy incarnate the
- 01:13:19collective conscience of mankind made
- 01:13:21manifest in the form of a nightmarish
- 01:13:22entity that destroyed the very Universe
- 01:13:25around it the Communists say their
- 01:13:26ideology is the only one that can stop
- 01:13:28the pale if you read the novel the lead
- 01:13:29developer wrote that takes place in the
- 01:13:31same universe as the game it flly out
- 01:13:32says the way to stop the palis communism
- 01:13:34but that's ridiculous that book sucks
- 01:13:36ass don't use side material to justify
- 01:13:38lore in a game every ideology promises a
- 01:13:40better future all of them Communists say
- 01:13:42it will come from a grand Collective
- 01:13:43working together capitalists say it's
- 01:13:45from self-governance to allow the
- 01:13:47individual would be the master of their
- 01:13:48own fate fascists say it's from the
- 01:13:49collective becoming stronger as a nation
- 01:13:51they're all selling the same product
- 01:13:53just different terms for it all and it's
- 01:13:54not like communism have a United
- 01:13:56ideology anyway I already discussed the
- 01:13:58possibility of a purity spiral well the
- 01:13:59game itself shows that you can't get
- 01:14:01them all together to just collectively
- 01:14:03believe in infrom materialism Manana a
- 01:14:05guy who works for the union and is
- 01:14:07implied to be a communist is loyal to
- 01:14:09the union the one ran by a corrupt mob
- 01:14:11boss and is seen as a disgusting parody
- 01:14:13by dross dross himself doesn't think
- 01:14:15anyone but him is a communist everyone
- 01:14:17else are just poser stealing the label
- 01:14:19Cindy the skull is an antisocial
- 01:14:21Anarchist who doesn't give two shits
- 01:14:23about any idea of a collective good and
- 01:14:25everard is only interested in making
- 01:14:26sure he gets to sit on the throne at the
- 01:14:28end of the day now some people might
- 01:14:29shoot back and go well everard isn't
- 01:14:31technically communist he's socialist
- 01:14:32there's a difference to which I say not
- 01:14:34really he's bankrolling a strictly
- 01:14:36communist newsletter he worked with draw
- 01:14:39a avow communist D tried to teach him
- 01:14:42communist Doctrine there's really not
- 01:14:44much of a difference here it's just two
- 01:14:45different terms that all mean the same
- 01:14:47definition and it doesn't change the
- 01:14:48fact that he absolutely intended to have
- 01:14:50his fellow comrades killed for his own
- 01:14:52agenda that's what he intended to do
- 01:14:54with the Hardy Boys this is supposed to
- 01:14:56be an ideology of togetherness and not
- 01:14:58one of the Communists show any signs of
- 01:15:00actually doing that all the college
- 01:15:01students do all day is read
- 01:15:03marxists I meant movian literature and
- 01:15:06talk about how everyone except them are
- 01:15:07just bad Communists doing the exact
- 01:15:09thing that turned dross into a psychotic
- 01:15:11homicidal loner the ideology is about
- 01:15:13shutting out all doubt showing unending
- 01:15:15loyalty and nobody's actually ever done
- 01:15:18that because it's impossible we're human
- 01:15:20beings we're social animals we have our
- 01:15:21likes our dislikes our families our
- 01:15:23connections the things that keep us from
- 01:15:25becoming the slaves they want you to be
- 01:15:27when the ideology specifically says that
- 01:15:29art itself is a Bourgeois The Invention
- 01:15:32it must be thrown out dross outright
- 01:15:33says artist should be sent to a goog and
- 01:15:35shot art is a bourge establishment it's
- 01:15:39an a front to
- 01:15:40humanity every Gallery should be
- 01:15:43bulldozed and the artists should all be
- 01:15:45given 30 years of hard labor in yokata
- 01:15:50that should be the immediate sign this
- 01:15:51is all [ __ ] Art Is What Makes Us
- 01:15:53what we are more than just dumb Apes
- 01:15:55duking it out on a massive ball aren't
- 01:15:57is how we find out more about ourselves
- 01:15:59how we view the world our place in it
- 01:16:01it's something not even the Communists
- 01:16:02could rectify the Soviet Union had art
- 01:16:05they had painters musicians even video
- 01:16:07games and films their state tried to
- 01:16:09turn them all into propaganda films but
- 01:16:11there were artists that specifically
- 01:16:12bucked against that and wanted to make
- 01:16:13art for Art's Sake that's where you get
- 01:16:15movies like stalker or the hand which
- 01:16:17had pointed criticisms about the Soviet
- 01:16:19government and it demands to make art
- 01:16:21solely as a sign of loyalty also look
- 01:16:23into how the Soviet government [ __ ]
- 01:16:24over the creator of Tetris it's a story
- 01:16:26that will boil your blood disco elesium
- 01:16:28to me is a game about the failures of
- 01:16:30Communism not just the effects it has on
- 01:16:32the world but why it always fails
- 01:16:35because it demands human beings to stop
- 01:16:37being human to put aside our biases our
- 01:16:39connections to the world and blindly put
- 01:16:41total faith into an ideology to the
- 01:16:43point even members of it refer to it
- 01:16:44being like a religion that's impossible
- 01:16:46and is doomed to fail whether from
- 01:16:48sheltered intellectuals criticizing and
- 01:16:51subverting everything to the point they
- 01:16:52call turnup Farmers capitalist
- 01:16:54propagandists or the downright evil and
- 01:16:56criminal that view others around them as
- 01:16:58obstacles and have no qualms killing if
- 01:17:00it means they get what they want and
- 01:17:01honestly the most heartfelt moment of
- 01:17:03the game has nothing to do with politics
- 01:17:05there's a side quest that at first seems
- 01:17:07like a complete joke you mean a nice
- 01:17:09lady in the whirling Rags who talks
- 01:17:10about how her and her husband are
- 01:17:12cryptozoologists scientists who look for
- 01:17:14mythological creatures in the hopes of
- 01:17:15finding new species of animals the game
- 01:17:17mocks you relentlessly for following
- 01:17:19this from The Voice in your head saying
- 01:17:20it's not real to Kim to the side quest
- 01:17:23not producing any results they're
- 01:17:24looking for what's known as the Incy
- 01:17:26Indian fmid a type of stick bug rumored
- 01:17:28to be native in revisal as stated the
- 01:17:30game talks to you like you're an idiot
- 01:17:32for thinking any of this is true for
- 01:17:34asking about Cryptid and showing any
- 01:17:35sign you might believe the fine exists
- 01:17:37well at the end of the game when talking
- 01:17:39with dross you noce something is wrong
- 01:17:41with him he's twitching and is still
- 01:17:42energetic despite living for decades on
- 01:17:44this island and dealing with cancer you
- 01:17:46can pass a few perception Texs to figure
- 01:17:48out what's going on something is keeping
- 01:17:50him going not quite a puppet on strings
- 01:17:52but more like a toy with an old pair of
- 01:17:54batteries in it and then you discover it
- 01:17:57the fmid is real it's [ __ ] real the
- 01:18:00island dross has been staying on all
- 01:18:02this time contains the only living
- 01:18:04insulindian fmid not only can you see it
- 01:18:08you can talk to it Harry can pass a
- 01:18:10check that allows him to psychically
- 01:18:11communicate with the fmid now the fmid
- 01:18:14is basically like a child despite living
- 01:18:16for centuries seeing the different
- 01:18:17stages of History rivell has been
- 01:18:19through it's very innocent only caring
- 01:18:21enough to eat leaves and not much shs I
- 01:18:24think we should eat it if it's a leaf we
- 01:18:27can put it in your mouth or read yum yum
- 01:18:30you can talk to it about existence and
- 01:18:32deeper questions about everything the
- 01:18:33Fine's outright scared of blinking
- 01:18:35because it thinks it might wipe reality
- 01:18:37away it's a genuinely beautiful moment
- 01:18:39something that serves as a sort of true
- 01:18:40ending for the game realizing that this
- 01:18:42creature is still alive and even able to
- 01:18:44communicate you even get answers to some
- 01:18:46smaller questions like where certain
- 01:18:47items ended up that you couldn't find in
- 01:18:49the main campaign even establishing that
- 01:18:51the fmid emits a sort of neurot toxin
- 01:18:53it's harmless to humans for the most
- 01:18:55part but long-term exposure can rot your
- 01:18:57mind which is what happened to dross
- 01:18:59exposure to the fmid made him far more
- 01:19:01impulsive and rage filled taking his
- 01:19:03bitterness up a notch into outright
- 01:19:04manic anger that's not to say it's the
- 01:19:06fit's fault this all happened it has no
- 01:19:08idea it has that effect on humans and
- 01:19:10takes decades for it to develop all it
- 01:19:12really did was enhance the traits dross
- 01:19:14already had he already despised the
- 01:19:16world and the people in it the toxin
- 01:19:18from the fasma just made him lose
- 01:19:19impulse control you would have been fine
- 01:19:22if he simply didn't live alone on an
- 01:19:24island for over 40 years still the fmin
- 01:19:27is a fantastic reveal showing that even
- 01:19:29a world as Bleak and tired as disco
- 01:19:30elium still has potential for True
- 01:19:32wonder who knows what else is out there
- 01:19:34one day there could be even more species
- 01:19:36discovered maybe Humanity can find true
- 01:19:38answers for the pale maybe we can throw
- 01:19:40all the Communists into it so we don't
- 01:19:41have to deal with their stupid book
- 01:19:42clubs anymore it's just a big world
- 01:19:44right for exploration still then you get
- 01:19:46the actual ending of the game the
- 01:19:48debriefing after the events on the
- 01:19:50island Harry and Kim come back and are
- 01:19:52confronted by Harry old team his partner
- 01:19:54a fellow officer from the unit and a
- 01:19:56police psychologist they run down
- 01:19:58everything you did from discovering the
- 01:20:00truth behind the case two side quests
- 01:20:02the big goal is to convince your former
- 01:20:04partner a man named Jean to let you back
- 01:20:06to the unit personally I kind of wanted
- 01:20:08there to be an option where Harry gives
- 01:20:09these people the finger and quits
- 01:20:10because Jean is a massive [ __ ] yeah
- 01:20:13he's burned out from dealing with
- 01:20:14Harry's mental breakdown but the man
- 01:20:16contributed absolutely [ __ ] nothing
- 01:20:19to the case Harry a man they know is
- 01:20:21mentally unstable with is left to handle
- 01:20:23everything and they had the G to judge
- 01:20:25him based on his performance even after
- 01:20:27the tribunal when him and Kim are
- 01:20:29[ __ ] shot and left wounded the two
- 01:20:32were left to patch themselves up while
- 01:20:33they didn't even go visit them even
- 01:20:35though they were in the city they were
- 01:20:36literally in the same bar as them no a
- 01:20:39man and a woman sit in the front seat of
- 01:20:42an armored motor Carriage the woman is
- 01:20:44driving the man lights a cigarette Jean
- 01:20:47vicm is his name the asphal vanishes
- 01:20:51under the wheels of the machine
- 01:20:53ahead Harbor cranes rise to the sky back
- 01:20:56to that [ __ ] hole he says I called your
- 01:20:59station after the fight the injury was
- 01:21:01logged in they told me they've sent
- 01:21:03officers to join you on the site I'm
- 01:21:05sure they're worried about you that
- 01:21:07means he hasn't seen them around while
- 01:21:10you were out they're not really worried
- 01:21:13about you if they were wouldn't they be
- 01:21:15here yeah such great friends fantastic
- 01:21:18totally not a piece of [ __ ] thing to do
- 01:21:19there's being tired of dealing with a
- 01:21:20guy in a downward spiral then they're
- 01:21:22setting his yard on fire and complaining
- 01:21:23he didn't reimburse the cost of gasoline
- 01:21:25still it's a sort of final boss of the
- 01:21:27game to convince them Harry is still
- 01:21:29good enough to be a detective and if you
- 01:21:31did everything right you're allowed back
- 01:21:32on as stated I kind of wanted to I don't
- 01:21:34even want to come back ending with fit
- 01:21:36the fact Harry's burned out and has just
- 01:21:37seen too much maybe some variations
- 01:21:39depending on the style of cop you did
- 01:21:41like an art cop becomes a critic or a
- 01:21:42successful author I don't know
- 01:21:44regardless that's disco elium it's been
- 01:21:46a while since I made a video about a
- 01:21:48game and I hope this one lives up to the
- 01:21:49hype reminder the playthrough I did was
- 01:21:51just a singular one there's so much
- 01:21:53detail hidden inside that you could
- 01:21:54waste weeks trying to find them all the
- 01:21:56studio behind the game ended up being a
- 01:21:57lightning and a bottle situation making
- 01:21:59something absolutely fantastic and still
- 01:22:01debate back and forth to this day I
- 01:22:03recommend you all sit down and give
- 01:22:04disco elium a chance even if you have
- 01:22:07serious disagreements with developers
- 01:22:08politics which I understand if that's
- 01:22:10material people will just outright raise
- 01:22:12a finger towards and go [ __ ] you I laid
- 01:22:14out in this video how I heavily disagree
- 01:22:17with their intended audience but still
- 01:22:18find myself enjoying the game immensely
- 01:22:20besides the studio was bought out by the
- 01:22:22public and all the developers were fired
- 01:22:24so even if you buy the game they're not
- 01:22:25getting any money which is both a
- 01:22:27fitting ending for the studio and a
- 01:22:29tragedy very clearly not every developer
- 01:22:31was a communist I really recommend you
- 01:22:32guys check out that documentary and see
- 01:22:34how many people got roped into this
- 01:22:35whole thing and sucks they all got
- 01:22:36smeared by an ecomaniac who revealed to
- 01:22:38be a total hypocrite all he did was get
- 01:22:40a bunch of his communist friends from a
- 01:22:41far-left podcast to voice act really
- 01:22:43that was the extent of it he claimed he
- 01:22:45wrote half the [ __ ] game and there
- 01:22:46were tons of developers that came out
- 01:22:48and said no he's lying and some moments
- 01:22:50of the game really feel like a hidden
- 01:22:51[ __ ] you to the guy cuz some of this was
- 01:22:53so blatant it's it's honestly
- 01:22:54astonishing anyone could miss it and I
- 01:22:56must repeat that the actual story that
- 01:22:58happen in studio zom fits so well to the
- 01:23:00themes of the game just not the way
- 01:23:02anyone thought right now the fan base is
- 01:23:04[ __ ] livid at the news that there's
- 01:23:05even more layoffs going on in studio zom
- 01:23:07along with a canceled Sequel and
- 01:23:09expansion pack for the original disco
- 01:23:10elesium and it's something to where
- 01:23:12they're getting so angry that they're
- 01:23:13blaming literally everyone else it's a
- 01:23:16thing where people make games was blamed
- 01:23:19even at the time for being biased with
- 01:23:21their research even though if you
- 01:23:22watched the documentary they really
- 01:23:23weren't they did Lay hard into
- 01:23:25individuals that deserved it and they
- 01:23:27simply explored claims that nobody else
- 01:23:28wanted to look into such as CVS and his
- 01:23:31mistreatment of fellow employees
- 01:23:33something the fan base has downplayed to
- 01:23:35a degree that's honestly kind of
- 01:23:36disgusting I mean you have stories of a
- 01:23:38guy who's mentally abusing his employees
- 01:23:40and forcing them to Crunch and the whole
- 01:23:42time he's barely working himself and the
- 01:23:43response is well he's the Creator and
- 01:23:45this is his vision any other company and
- 01:23:48any other individual they'd be writing
- 01:23:49screed after screed about how this is
- 01:23:51mistreatment and just the capitalist
- 01:23:53system at work abusing people but
- 01:23:54because it's a communist and now out of
- 01:23:56nowhere well these are just the growing
- 01:23:58pains to make great art even though he's
- 01:24:00doing all the things that they
- 01:24:01themselves hate and the idea that people
- 01:24:03make games were responsible for what's
- 01:24:05going on with the studio now is just
- 01:24:06stupid all they did was release a
- 01:24:08documentary a documentary that revealed
- 01:24:10that these people were not exactly as
- 01:24:12leftist as they would have you believe
- 01:24:14in fact they were all over the place
- 01:24:16disorganized and didn't seem to really
- 01:24:18like each other the idea that a single
- 01:24:20documentary would affect anything at the
- 01:24:21company is honestly pretty revealing now
- 01:24:23they've tried to pull out a quote from
- 01:24:25Argo tulik where he essentially claims
- 01:24:28that the documentary did in fact affect
- 01:24:29the company and it allowed the venture
- 01:24:31capitalist to purge even more of the
- 01:24:32workforce to which I say how would a
- 01:24:34single documentary do that and obviously
- 01:24:36this is a process that's been in the
- 01:24:38works for a long time also ignoring the
- 01:24:40fact that the games industry all around
- 01:24:42has been suffering from massive layoffs
- 01:24:43from company to company Studio zom
- 01:24:45obviously would not be immune to this so
- 01:24:47once again blaming people make games for
- 01:24:49this just kind of feels like cope you
- 01:24:51know the one kid that spoils everything
- 01:24:52by pointing out what actually happened
- 01:24:54and they have to beat him down so they
- 01:24:55can still live in their delusion that
- 01:24:57this was a purely Marxist game and there
- 01:24:58was never any infighting and it's just
- 01:25:00capitalism destroying art who cares if
- 01:25:02kurvitz did some shady and illegal
- 01:25:04things himself because well he's a
- 01:25:05Marxist and what he's fighting for is so
- 01:25:07important that you can look past those
- 01:25:09things but everyone else the investors
- 01:25:11they're terrible because they're
- 01:25:12capitalists so when they do shady and
- 01:25:14illegal things you have to point that
- 01:25:15out once again it's a double standard
- 01:25:17something that I've pointed out
- 01:25:18throughout the game is actually kind of
- 01:25:20woven into the writing that the mark ISM
- 01:25:22and ideology aspect is all just puff
- 01:25:25pieces and people deep down show you who
- 01:25:27they really are actually it appears the
- 01:25:30Argo quote was completely taken out of
- 01:25:33context he went on to clarify on Twitter
- 01:25:36that he doesn't blame people make games
- 01:25:38in the slightest for his firing in fact
- 01:25:41he praised the documentary and said it
- 01:25:43meant a lot to the developers of disco
- 01:25:46alysium who were overshadowed by the
- 01:25:49slap fight between kurvitz his friends
- 01:25:52and the executives even calling it the
- 01:25:55one good thing that happened to them in
- 01:25:572023 I doubt for a second that the more
- 01:26:00radical aspects of the Disco elesium fan
- 01:26:02base will ever have any form of
- 01:26:03introspection in fact they'll just
- 01:26:05double down and continue to blame
- 01:26:07everyone but themselves why the game
- 01:26:08flopped they decided to tout the game as
- 01:26:10a communist Masterpiece and they were
- 01:26:12shocked that the general public didn't
- 01:26:14really support it enough or even really
- 01:26:15care when Studio zom was shut down cuz
- 01:26:18remember to certain parts of the world
- 01:26:21communism is the exct same thing as the
- 01:26:23Nazis so when they hear about Studio Z
- 01:26:25an openly communist game Studio being
- 01:26:27shut down they basically view it the
- 01:26:29same thing as the ethnic cleansing
- 01:26:31Studio being shut down to them it's
- 01:26:33nothing but a net positive for the world
- 01:26:34because their poison can no longer
- 01:26:36spread now once again disco elesium is a
- 01:26:39lot more than the communism but that's
- 01:26:41what the fan base wanted to push so now
- 01:26:43they get to suffer the consequences and
- 01:26:45the whole time they'll still be Purity
- 01:26:47spiraling and blaming everything else
- 01:26:49beyond their own actions that's the
- 01:26:51problem with a lot of gaming today very
- 01:26:53little will people actually sit down and
- 01:26:55play through something they tend to rely
- 01:26:56on YouTube videos just explain things to
- 01:26:58them certain franchises especially
- 01:27:00struggle with this it's just plain sucks
- 01:27:02to be a Persona fan right now cuz how
- 01:27:03many video essays completely missed the
- 01:27:05point of certain plot elements and
- 01:27:06millions of people have vastly different
- 01:27:07views of the game that one is actually
- 01:27:09there and I'm sure certain fans of disco
- 01:27:11Elum will probably say the same thing
- 01:27:12about this video regardless I think it's
- 01:27:14about time to wrap things up this video
- 01:27:16ended up being kind of a monster though
- 01:27:18it definitely needed to be this is a
- 01:27:19very big game and just the little bit I
- 01:27:21talked about requ Ires a lot of context
- 01:27:23I didn't even go into all the political
- 01:27:25quests and how even those have multiple
- 01:27:26endings still hopefully this gives you
- 01:27:28guys A New Perspective on Disco elisium
- 01:27:30If even a capitalist Pig like me can
- 01:27:31find tons of enjoyment in it there's
- 01:27:33very clearly something there for anyone
- 01:27:35to appreciate until next time please
- 01:27:37remember to like comment and subscribe
- 01:27:39see you
- 01:27:42guys especially in light of his
- 01:27:44political views detective du is as you
- 01:27:47may know a hustler he grinds he makes
- 01:27:51the r
- 01:27:52he's a Visionary and a money engineer
- 01:27:55which is just other still he is also
- 01:27:59mazovian socio Economist who believes in
- 01:28:01liquidating the ruling class how he
- 01:28:04reconciles these two points of view I do
- 01:28:06not know but he is V on both of them hey
- 01:28:10loser do you want a shirt do you want a
- 01:28:12t-shirt I have shirts now look at look

- 01:28:16t-shirt you can buy if you don't buy the
- 01:28:18T-shirt I'll kill your family if you
- 01:28:19don't buy the T-shirt I'll poison your
- 01:28:21dog if you don't Buy the T-shirt you're
- 01:28:23going to be the only person in town that
- 01:28:24does not have a t-shirt everyone's going
