that you can use to help your mental

i know in this pandemic that we've been
00:00:56
through
00:00:56
and in life there can be lots of anxiety
00:01:00
lots of fear lots of depression
00:01:03
everyone's going through a lot this year
00:01:07
and they've looked at the statistics and
00:01:09
over the last year we've had more
00:01:10
problems with anxiety
00:01:12
suicides depression than we've ever had
00:01:16
before
00:01:17
so i think it's a good idea that we talk
00:01:19
about some biblical prescriptions that
00:01:21
will help us
00:01:23
remember a biblical prescription helps
00:01:26
the whole body
00:01:27
we call this holism it helps many
00:01:30
different chemical pathways in the body
00:01:33
whereas a prescription medicine we call
00:01:35
that reductionism
00:01:37
for instance medications might change
00:01:39
one specific
00:01:40
pathway but it doesn't change lots of
00:01:43
pathways throughout the body
00:01:44
so biblical prescriptions really are
00:01:47
more holistic
00:01:49
some people do have genetic problems and
00:01:51
need prescription medications
00:01:53
but we want to always try to change our
00:01:55
physiology
00:01:56
with biblical prescriptions if possible
00:01:59
and sometimes these different
00:02:01
prescriptions or treatments can work
00:02:03
together
00:02:04
but i hope you haven't suffered from
00:02:06
anxiety and mental health but i'm going

to leave you

three biblical prescriptions and the
00:02:11
first one

is psalms 19 verse 1. psalms 19 verses

it says the heavens

declare the glory of god
00:02:23
and the firmament shows his handiwork
00:02:27
well whenever we see the glory of god
00:02:30
how beautiful he is you know we see the
00:02:33
heavens we see the earth and how
00:02:35
beautiful it is it does something for us
00:02:38
chemically remember we were designed to
00:02:41
be
00:02:42
outdoors and not indoors
00:02:45
so let's talk a little bit about how our
00:02:47
physiology changes
00:02:49
when we're out of doors when we see the
00:02:51
glory of god when we see the beauty his
00:02:53
creation when we're outdoors
00:02:56
just being outdoors helps us get fresh
00:02:59
air
00:02:59
helps our oxygenation through the whole
00:03:01
body it also helps us with vitamin
00:03:04
d everyone's heard about vitamin d
00:03:06
vitamin d
00:03:07
is needed to help eventually make a
00:03:09
chemical in our brain called
00:03:11
serotonin when people are outdoors they
00:03:14
tend to move more
00:03:16
moving more helps the circulation more
00:03:19
oxygen more blood better supply of
00:03:22
nutrients to the brain
00:03:24
but one of the things it does when we're
00:03:26
outdoors we see the beauty of god these
00:03:28
awe-inspiring things whether it be a
00:03:31
sunset
00:03:33
whether it be the ocean well when we
00:03:35
ever see
00:03:36
his beautiful handiwork we see the glory
00:03:39
of god
00:03:40
and when we appreciate the glory of god
00:03:43
and come into his presence
00:03:45
there's something very special that's
00:03:47
done in our physiology
00:03:49
we through going outside and
00:03:50
appreciating nature
00:03:52
we can see his handiwork we can become
00:03:55
close to god
00:03:56
we can come into a state of worship we
00:03:59
know
00:03:59
when we worship god our chemistry
00:04:02
changes
00:04:03
there's been several studies that have
00:04:04
been done that shows the part of the
00:04:06
brain the
00:04:06
anterior cingulate cortex the god brain
00:04:09
changes
00:04:10
less stress better immune system
00:04:13
lowers blood pressure we tend to have
00:04:16
deeper
00:04:16
breathing we relax when we go out in
00:04:20
nature we might touch nature we know
00:04:22
that people that
00:04:22
garden that go on walks i've heard of
00:04:25
some people that get really depressed
00:04:28
and feel terrible that they just go out
00:04:30
in nature and have these big
00:04:32
walkabouts where they just go and hike a
00:04:34
trail where they spend a large
00:04:36
amount of time outdoors well not only do
00:04:39
you connect with nature
00:04:40
but this also gives you a chance to
00:04:43
connect with your creator in different
00:04:45
ways
00:04:45
so it's very important for our mental
00:04:48
health a biblical prescription if you're
00:04:50
having problems with anxiety
00:04:52
if you're having problems with
00:04:53
depression get outdoors
00:04:55
see god's beauty now what does that look
00:04:58
like
00:04:59
well for some people it might be taking
00:05:01
a walk
00:05:02
for some people it might be going on
00:05:04
vacation
00:05:05
for some people it might be walking on a
00:05:07
trail or riding a bike or
00:05:10
going on a canoe or walking in a garden
00:05:13
a botanical garden
00:05:14
or going to the zoo for some of us it
00:05:17
might just be going outside and watching
00:05:19
a sun
00:05:19
sunrise or a sunset or it might be going
00:05:22
to the ocean
00:05:23
or it might be listening to a brook
00:05:25
where some way
00:05:26
we could connect with god's creation
00:05:29
unfortunately some of us might not be
00:05:31
able to go outside at all
00:05:33
well we can still visualize things
00:05:36
can you think about what it would be
00:05:38
like to see a sunset we could get a
00:05:40
picture of a sunset
00:05:41
or you could go somewhere on the
00:05:42
internet and see something that's
00:05:44
beautiful
00:05:45
the grand canyon waterfalls great
00:05:48
beauty mountains a beautiful things that
00:05:52
god made
00:05:53
when we do this there's a physical
00:05:56
change in our body
00:05:57
it also can bring us closer to god it
00:06:00
can also be
00:06:01
an act of worship so i want you to
00:06:03
remember that text psalms 19

1 and make ways to be outside
00:06:09
or to appreciate the beauty that god's
00:06:12
made
00:06:12
it's a biblical prescription something

holistic

that will change your entire chemistry

make a plan to do this remember god

created adam and eve and they were in a

great garden so they got to experience

this

all the time for much of earth's history

we didn't stay much time indoors we were

outdoors

all the time and when we do this there's

physiologic changes

that help our mental status so that's

text is a text that christ said himself

the woman at the well if you knew the

and who it is who says to you give me a

you would have asked him and he would

have given you

living water so the second biblical

prescription i want to give you
00:07:25
is water remember when we come to christ
00:07:29
in worship
00:07:30
that's the living water but we also need
00:07:34
physical water no matter what season it
00:07:37
is
00:07:37
the brain mental health does good when
00:07:41
we're
00:07:41
hydrated well it's been estimated that
00:07:44
up to 70 percent of our brain is
00:07:47
water we don't get enough water it puts
00:07:50
stress on our brains we get dehydrated
00:07:53
it also stresses out the rest of the
00:07:55
body and when we're bodies under stress
00:07:58
guess what inflammation occurs the
00:08:00
stress
00:08:01
chemistry is turned on we just don't
00:08:03
feel as good we don't breathe as well
00:08:06
our brain is affected remember the whole
00:08:08
body
00:08:09
is interconnected so something as simple

water can help our bodies tremendously

but i also want you to remember in this

physical water which continues to keep

us alive

but living water remember the physical

water helps our body

but the living water jesus that also

helps our body

and in this text john 4 10 it says

it is he who says to you give me a drink

that's christ saying

you would have asked him and he would

have given you not more than the

physical water

but by being with him by being with

christ you can have
00:08:49
living water so in helping your mental

health
00:08:52
we want the physical water we want the
00:08:55
living water
00:08:57
now what does that look like in your

life well it might be simple as getting

a drink of water every morning before
00:09:03
you brush your teeth
00:09:04
before you eat a meal it might be
00:09:07
drinking water instead of soda pop
00:09:10
it might be just consciously making sure
00:09:12
you're hydrated
00:09:13
well you want to drink enough water till
00:09:16
your urine comes out
00:09:17
clear but as you drink
00:09:20
the physical water spend a second
00:09:24
to remember the living water have i
00:09:27
connected with the living water today
00:09:30
have i worshiped today have i asked
00:09:32
christ to help me
00:09:33
with all of my problems whether it be
00:09:35
anxiety or depression
00:09:37
have i asked god to help my brain do
00:09:39
better
00:09:40
have i asked god to find the other
00:09:41
things that he can give me that i can
00:09:43
improve my brain health
00:09:45
and he might lead you to things like
00:09:47
walnuts and almonds or blueberries or
00:09:49
better diet
00:09:50
he might lead you to turning off media
00:09:53
or focusing on positive things and not
00:09:55
negative things
00:09:56
remember every input affects our brains
00:09:59
and this living water can give you power

to see the things
00:10:03
and the inputs you need to do to change
00:10:06
your entire
00:10:06
physiology number one prescription

being outside number two prescription

water and living water and now let's

look at prescription

number three and we're going to the

proverbs for that

proverbs proverbs 16 verses 20.

so the third biblical prescription i'd

like to leave with you today

is one of happiness you know
00:10:35
in this world that we're in a lot of
00:10:38
people are pretty
00:10:40
tight they're uptight they're not happy
00:10:43
well it's okay to laugh it's okay to
00:10:46
focus on happy things
00:10:48
it's okay to do things that are fun it's
00:10:50
okay to see the lighter side in life
00:10:53
it's okay to belly laugh well in
00:10:56
proverbs 16
00:10:57
20 it's another biblical prescription
00:11:00
and it says this he who
00:11:03
heeds the word wisely will find
00:11:07
good and whoever trusts
00:11:10
in the lord happy is he
00:11:14
it doesn't necessarily mean that we have
00:11:16
to be giddy
00:11:17
and laugh all the time even though that
00:11:19
helps us make a chemical called
00:11:20
endorphins but when we trust in the lord
00:11:24
when we worship him when we realize that
00:11:26
the trials of this world
00:11:28
including anxiety and depression and
00:11:31
fear when we trust in the lord guess
00:11:34
what
00:11:35
he promises that we would happy as he he
00:11:38
would give us a place
00:11:39
inside where we know that even though we
00:11:42
face trials
00:11:43
sometimes he's allows our trials
00:11:45
including
00:11:46
problems with mental health to make us
00:11:48
stronger
00:11:49
to encourage that relationship because
00:11:52
god sees us
00:11:53
forever not just for the here and now
00:11:56
so many of us battle with mental health
00:11:59
but these are some things
00:12:00
that we can do biblical prescriptions
00:12:03
and when we're
00:12:03
outside we have physiologic changes when
00:12:06
we drink
00:12:07
water we also can improve our body when
00:12:10
we're happy and see the good side of
00:12:12
things and when we trust in god
00:12:14
and we have that peace that comes from
00:12:16
that relationship
00:12:18
we have true joy inside and also
00:12:21
you know getting back to happiness you
00:12:24
know one thing that helps me
00:12:25
and you might want to try this as you
00:12:27
know sometimes when you're feeling bad
00:12:29
you might be a little depressed might be
00:12:30
a little unhappy
00:12:32
just find something funny to laugh at or
00:12:35
some people just laugh at themselves
00:12:37
just laughing out loud in itself
00:12:40
creates chemistry endorphins that are
00:12:43
good for you
00:12:44
so even if you don't have anything
00:12:45
that's funny just occasionally
00:12:47
go through the motion
00:12:55

you might be more happy but when you

depend

on everything else that's going on so

when we think about

depression and anxiety and all the

mental health problems we've had
00:13:24
focus on these three things and
00:13:26
hopefully

through worship and through this
00:13:29
relationship with god he'll help you

find

other physiologic things that you can do

to improve your mental health
