- 00:01:34not trapped in your voice some people
- 00:01:36just are so attached to it they never
- 00:01:38change it and you'll notice in their
- 00:01:40lives they sound the same forever what a
- 00:01:43shame what a shame as my my vocal
- 00:01:45teacher would say you have such a
- 00:01:46beautiful instrument you have not
- 00:01:48realized its power when you work with
- 00:01:50someone like what are the things that
- 00:01:51you work on in order to help them
- 00:01:53educate Inspire and entertain at a
- 00:01:55higher level well when it comes to
- 00:01:57communication specifically I've kind of
- 00:01:59still the five core foundations of
- 00:02:02brilliant communication right and it's
- 00:02:06actually quite simple I did years of
- 00:02:08theater and years of vocal training to
- 00:02:11learn how to be a speaker you learn
- 00:02:12theater because this is an instrument
- 00:02:14your body and your voice is an
- 00:02:15instrument and I did years of that which
- 00:02:18has helped me distill five core things
- 00:02:19right the first thing is your rate of
- 00:02:23speech a lot of people put no thought
- 00:02:25behind their rate of speech but if again
- 00:02:28for those listening to this if I get
- 00:02:30stuck in a consistent R of speech now
- 00:02:31and I stick to this R of speech and I
- 00:02:33don't vary from this R of speech what
- 00:02:34happens to you as a listener yeah it it
- 00:02:36starts to get boring right so we have to
- 00:02:39modulate it we have to vary our rate of
- 00:02:41speech and if I sometimes go quickly and
- 00:02:43when I'm going quickly it shows passion
- 00:02:45but then when I slow down Cohen I'm
- 00:02:49saying nothing important here but it
- 00:02:52seems so
- 00:02:54profound nothing important has been said
- 00:02:57yet it seems profound right so right a
- 00:02:59speech it's its own Beast the second
- 00:03:02thing is volume volume shows confidence
- 00:03:05Authority that you believe in what
- 00:03:06you're saying so if I switch off my
- 00:03:09volume let's say I speak like this now
- 00:03:12and I come in but I'm truly an expert in

- 00:03:18seem like I'm confident in what I'm
- 00:03:19saying it's a shame most people speak at
- 00:03:22a volume that is a bit too quiet and
- 00:03:24then when you tell them to a rating from
- 00:03:261 to 10 they usually speak at about a
- 00:03:28three you tell them to speak at a five
- 00:03:30they go oh I think I'm being too loud
- 00:03:32you know each year I coach three CEOs
- 00:03:34right now I'm coaching the CEO of Orange
- 00:03:35Theory Fitness Dave long massive sh
- 00:03:37shout out to Dave awesome human being
- 00:03:40but he speaks at a level three volume I
- 00:03:42tell him to speak at a level five what
- 00:03:43we're doing now and he goes oh V I think
- 00:03:45I'm being too
- 00:03:46loud okay Dave that's crazy you're not
- 00:03:49you you're losing out on a huge amount
- 00:03:50of authority Charisma energy confidence
- 00:03:54and Authority because you don't speak at
- 00:03:55a level
- 00:03:56five volume third one is pitch
- 00:04:01pitch is fascinating because for the
- 00:04:03listeners who are listening right now
- 00:04:04think to a book you've read maybe you
- 00:04:05can even think to a book you've read
- 00:04:07Cohen a book you've read more than 10
- 00:04:09times right have you got one that you
- 00:04:11you've read a lot uh yes maybe not 10
- 00:04:14times but let's say you you've got one
- 00:04:16okay if I asked you to recite for me a
- 00:04:19page in that book word for word could
- 00:04:21you do it no good otherwise you'd be a
- 00:04:24freak now let me ask you another
- 00:04:26question is there a song that you sing
- 00:04:27quite often that you enjoy
- 00:04:31o there's a song that my son loves to
- 00:04:34play over and over again right but if I
- 00:04:37asked you to reite for me word for word
- 00:04:38that song could you recite the song Oh
- 00:04:40and there's not one song in the world
- 00:04:41that I know the lyrics to Oh no okay so
- 00:04:43you're a terrible example for this but
- 00:04:45for the listeners you totally ruined my
- 00:04:47example thank you kohen but but for the
- 00:04:48listeners for the listeners surely you
- 00:04:50can think of a song that you love right
- 00:04:51and generally most people can one song
- 00:04:54that I actually know the words of okay
- 00:04:56you never close your eyes anymore when
- 00:04:58you're the top G to gun right right
- 00:05:01right yeah of course yeah now now why
- 00:05:03can okay so a song has roughly 280 words
- 00:05:05right a page in a book has roughly 280
- 00:05:07words why can you recite a song yet not
- 00:05:10a page in the book that's so interesting
- 00:05:12music has
- 00:05:14Melody so if you speak with more Melody
- 00:05:17what you say becomes more memorable what
- 00:05:20you say becomes more memorable whereas
- 00:05:22most people use two notes when they
- 00:05:24speak you know whereas I use the
- 00:05:26philosophy and I use the mindset of each
- 00:05:28person every one of you that's listening
- 00:05:30to this right now you've got a you've
- 00:05:31got a piano of 88 keys right and most
- 00:05:36people speak with a couple of keys and I
- 00:05:38remember my first singing teacher when I
- 00:05:40met her and I I didn't do this to become
- 00:05:42a singer I did this to become a more
- 00:05:43effective Communicator when I walked
- 00:05:45into a room I remember this she didn't
- 00:05:47even look at me and she'd play one key
- 00:05:50over and over and over again for 3
- 00:05:52minutes it was like something out of The
- 00:05:54Exorcist and then she' stop and she'd go
- 00:05:57how do you feel young man I I'd say I I
- 00:06:00don't know this is kind of scary awkward
- 00:06:02nothing and then she played this
- 00:06:04beautiful song called romance 3 minutes
- 00:06:08and then she turn around she goes how do
- 00:06:09you feel young man I said actually quite
- 00:06:11sad to be honest that was quite a sad
- 00:06:13song she goes then most people go
- 00:06:15through life speaking like this one key
- 00:06:18I'll teach you how to speak like this
- 00:06:20WOW Melody so Melody right so again
- 00:06:24Melody third Foundation because because
- 00:06:26here's the thing let me let me give you
- 00:06:27this example too you could hear a piano
- 00:06:29song and feel sad you could hear a piano
- 00:06:32song and feel happy you could hear a
- 00:06:34piano song and feel inspired you could
- 00:06:36hear a piano song and feel scared
- 00:06:39there's no
- 00:06:40words how do you know how to
- 00:06:43feel so there's a backing track
- 00:06:45underneath every
- 00:06:47voice there's a backing track under
- 00:06:49every voice when people say oh when this
- 00:06:50person walks into the room lifts the
- 00:06:52energy of the room what is that that's
- 00:06:54the backing track of their voice there's
- 00:06:57people who walk into a room and you feel
- 00:06:58incredibly heavy like I come in and I
- 00:07:01talk ah Cohen it's it's
- 00:07:04Monday can't believe it's 5 days till
- 00:07:07Friday and there's a backing track
- 00:07:09behind that so Melody that's Melody
- 00:07:11that's pitch the fourth one is
- 00:07:14tonality and tonality is the emotion
- 00:07:17that lives underneath your
- 00:07:20words without without realizing and this
- 00:07:24is where the world of theater and the
- 00:07:25world of singing come together but body
- 00:07:27language your face is is the remote
- 00:07:30control for the emotion that lives
- 00:07:32underneath your words and most people
- 00:07:34without knowing are walking around with
- 00:07:36what is otherwise known as a resting
- 00:07:37[Β __Β ] face and if you've got a resting
- 00:07:40[Β __Β ] face you've got a [Β __Β ]
- 00:07:42tone so if you just slightly smile it
- 00:07:45brings more Melody into your voice
- 00:07:47because a smile controls the emotion
- 00:07:49underneath your words and again if I
- 00:07:51make a disgusted face for no reason I'm
- 00:07:53not talking about anything disgusted but
- 00:07:54I sound disgusted the six core human
- 00:07:57emotions you got happy sad dis disgust
- 00:07:59fearful angry and surprise you've got to
- 00:08:02be able to show those six tonalities at
- 00:08:04least if you want to Be an Effective
- 00:08:06Communicator most people don't most men
- 00:08:09don't most men neutral face and as a
- 00:08:13result neutral tone most people are
- 00:08:15afraid of a monotone voice yet do not
- 00:08:18know that a monotone voice comes from a
- 00:08:19mon monotone
- 00:08:21body and your face is a part of your
- 00:08:23body so this is a huge one in my classes
- 00:08:26when I teach just to get men and women
- 00:08:29women in the corporate world who are so
- 00:08:31stoic in their facial expressions just
- 00:08:33to break out of their mold and show me
- 00:08:35some emotion damn it and when they do
- 00:08:38they come alive and authenticity is now
- 00:08:40radiating through them so that's that's
- 00:08:42the big
- 00:08:43one and the fifth
- 00:08:45one is
- 00:08:48pausing just
- 00:08:50[Music]
- 00:08:52this and for the listeners who listen to
- 00:08:54this just as we pause it's so powerful
- 00:08:58it gives them time to comprehend what
- 00:09:00we're saying he gives us as
- 00:09:02communicators time to listen and to
- 00:09:06process and these are
- 00:09:08important foundations when you're
- 00:09:10playing your instrument and if you
- 00:09:12listen back to this podcast or any great
- 00:09:15speaker these are the five things
- 00:09:17they're
- 00:09:18modulating and any speaker who you deem
- 00:09:20to not be a great communicator they're
- 00:09:22just not modulating one of these things
- 00:09:24it's just these five things M that
- 00:09:25you've nailed it I'm I'm quite young and
- 00:09:27generally in most of the environment I'm
- 00:09:29in are professional environments where
- 00:09:31the people are a lot more experienced
- 00:09:34however um I I do feel like I've spent a
- 00:09:36lot of my time uh growing up especially
- 00:09:40uh gaining knowledge for example and I'm
- 00:09:42confident in what I what I know and what
- 00:09:45I have to offer but when it comes to
- 00:09:49talking about it and presenting my ideas
- 00:09:51in a way where I'm not overstepping my
- 00:09:53boundaries I feel like sometimes I I
- 00:09:55ramble on to the point where it feels
- 00:09:57like because I don't know how to
- 00:09:58structure what I'm properly it feels
- 00:10:00like I don't know what I'm what I what
- 00:10:02I'm talking about those conversational
- 00:10:04models I shared with you at the
- 00:10:05beginning the
- 00:10:06Frameworks very vital EXT very vital
- 00:10:09extremely vital for you so when someone
- 00:10:12asks you something what's your area of
- 00:10:13expertise I'm a 3D environment artists I
- 00:10:16want you to use the 321 approach tell me
- 00:10:19three things about it concise go so the
- 00:10:22three most sorry the three fundamental
- 00:10:25things about fre environment artist is
- 00:10:28when you're starting a project you want

- 00:11:05good as the third iteration Perfect all
- 00:11:07right now before we move over to the
- 00:11:09next one which is the two types of
- 00:11:11remember so or the two things I want
- 00:11:14hand gestures I want more volume and I
- 00:11:17also want you to end your sentences on a
- 00:11:19lower
- 00:11:20pitch okay so you don't end on a high
- 00:11:22pitch you end on a low
- 00:11:24pitch okay yeah keep that FR of mind I
- 00:11:26know I'm throwing a lot at you in three
- 00:11:29you say is not that important I'm
- 00:11:30focusing on delivery in three two one go
- 00:11:33for it so the two types of f environment
- 00:11:37art are 2D environment art and 3D
- 00:11:40environment art you can have you can
- 00:11:43have a 3D environment art which is what
- 00:11:46you'd see in movies TV shows games where
- 00:11:48you create the assets and the background
- 00:11:51and the CGI for for it or you have the
- 00:11:542D environment art which is more uh more
- 00:11:57for portfolio work and less
- 00:12:00um bigger projects that You' experience
- 00:12:02with 3D environment first example the
- 00:12:04second example there's way more

- 00:14:35America and even though know that my
- 00:14:37accent is not super strong sometimes

- 00:14:43so what was it that you did different
- 00:14:46that it helped you to develop your
- 00:14:48skills communicating with people
- 00:14:50especially when you have a background
- 00:14:51what what would be your
- 00:14:53advice thank you for the
- 00:14:56question there was uh my Lin was up here
- 00:14:59talking to me as well where are you Mil
- 00:15:01Lin you're there as well note this down
- 00:15:02as well this is relevant to you too what
- 00:15:04I would say Daniel is it seems like a
- 00:15:07lot but do this if you record a
- 00:15:0920-minute video of you speaking to
- 00:15:11camera 20 minutes and the video has to
- 00:15:14be improvised okay so you talk about
- 00:15:16whatever you like to camera then you
- 00:15:19take that video and you send it to a
- 00:15:22speech
- 00:15:23pathologist okay local speech
- 00:15:25pathologist and say hey what would it
- 00:15:26cost me for you to be able to review
- 00:15:28this video and these are the most common
- 00:15:30words I would normally use in everyday
- 00:15:31speech could you help me identify the
- 00:15:34words I'm pronouncing incorrectly in the
- 00:15:36English language and then could you help
- 00:15:39me learn the mouth movements to make to
- 00:15:41be able to correct the sounds and the
- 00:15:43pronunciation and the articulation so
- 00:15:46then from that single exercise alone
- 00:15:48they will come back to you with maybe
- 00:15:50two to three pages of hey a big one for
- 00:15:52me was growing up in the Vietnamese
- 00:15:54culture when I said the word when I said
- 00:15:56the number three I would say it as free
- 00:15:59can I have three of those please like
- 00:16:02sorry four three of those please right
- 00:16:04so that's what I'd say where she goes no
- 00:16:06no honey it's tongue out in three so
- 00:16:09that single exercise allowed me to
- 00:16:11enhance my articulation and then what
- 00:16:13that does when you improve articulation
- 00:16:15and pronunciation of your words people
- 00:16:18perceive you to be more
- 00:16:20intelligent they just do because when
- 00:16:22you pronounce your words with
- 00:16:25Clarity you come across as being more
- 00:16:27intelligent so this is not just for
- 00:16:28those with English as a second language
- 00:16:31in Australia too you know I've met you
- 00:16:33know and I love I love my country I love
- 00:16:35Australians every now and then you meet
- 00:16:36someone they're like what you talking
- 00:16:37about man I don't know what you're doing

- 00:17:05pathologist maybe 150 bucks with the ESL
- 00:17:07teacher for $300 the $150 the ESL
- 00:17:11teacher is going to go through uh your
- 00:17:13speech get it transcribed for her so she
- 00:17:16doesn't have to transcribe it when she
- 00:17:19looks at it she'll look for the
- 00:17:20grammatical
- 00:17:21errors my big thing that I used to do is
- 00:17:23I would use past tense as future tense
- 00:17:25future tense as past tense and if you'll
- 00:17:28give me two three pages of things I need
- 00:17:29to work on two birds one stone you'll
- 00:17:32knock it out just with a 20-minute video
- 00:17:35yeah and then when you're practicing
- 00:17:37just one thing at a time don't get
- 00:17:39analysis paralysis and you get all this
- 00:17:41information back and you freak out one
- 00:17:43thing at a
- 00:17:44time thank you my pleasure my pleasure

- 00:18:12a job interview what's the most
- 00:18:13important thing you can do in those I
- 00:18:16believe it's forming a connection we all
- 00:18:19know this point of wisdom in the world
- 00:18:20that people do business with people they
- 00:18:22like once you like me it's infinitely
- 00:18:25harder for you to pick somebody else
- 00:18:27like I'll give you an example old mate
- 00:18:29Dan back there give him a wave letting
- 00:18:31you know you're not cuff to the table
- 00:18:33both hands notice both hands were up
- 00:18:35he's not cuff to the table that's only
- 00:18:37after hours after you all leave we only
- 00:18:39do that after Hours come on I don't want
- 00:18:42to get canceled now when it comes to job
- 00:18:45interviews with Dan he he kind of put
- 00:18:48his hand up to do head of Ops for me
- 00:18:50right so head of operations at all
- 00:18:51things Vin Jang now when I looked at
- 00:18:53Dan's credentials I kind of went I no
- 00:18:56you've been a psychologist all your life
- 00:18:58have you ever have ever managed anything
- 00:19:00you know and I interviewed a whole bunch
- 00:19:02of other people that were just way
- 00:19:03better than Dan so much better than Dan
- 00:19:06not funny super qualified 10 years of
- 00:19:09managing Ops for influencers for
- 00:19:11athletes and all these things but why
- 00:19:14did I pick Dan in the end why because I
- 00:19:17liked him the most because I like the
- 00:19:20guy the most and to me I would rather
- 00:19:23bet on the person that I like the most
- 00:19:25that has the most chemistry trust
- 00:19:27Rapport connection that I also know he
- 00:19:29loves and cares about me I'll rather
- 00:19:31pick that person or the skills he can
- 00:19:33learn more and more and more you'll find
- 00:19:35that more and more employers are
- 00:19:36starting to adopt the same
- 00:19:38mindset and what that means is again I
- 00:19:42believe the weight in an interview
- 00:19:43people miss out on opportunity it's
- 00:19:45connection connection is most one of the
- 00:19:47most powerful things you can form at the
- 00:19:48beginning of an interview why because if
- 00:19:51you just surveyed a thousand people who
- 00:19:53did interviews and you ask them what is
- 00:19:55the most common first question that
- 00:19:56people ask at an interview what is it
- 00:19:58can you all tell me the chat tell me in
- 00:19:59the chat what's the first question
- 00:20:00people tend to ask you in a an
- 00:20:03interview type it yes tell me about
- 00:20:07yourself so what can you do you can
- 00:20:09prepare for this you can absolutely
- 00:20:11prepare for this whereas most people
- 00:20:13what they do is they just like let's say
- 00:20:15I don't know let's um improv let's say
- 00:20:17I'm applying for a sales role okay I'm
- 00:20:18applying for a sales role I'm sitting in
- 00:20:20the interview I'm nervous cuz I didn't
- 00:20:21do the breathing before I'm freaking out
- 00:20:24and I didn't learn about par or anything
- 00:20:25I didn't learn about storytelling I
- 00:20:26don't know what's going on freaking out
- 00:20:28really hope to get this job uh they can
- 00:20:29see I'm nervous because I'm rubbing my
- 00:20:30knees and I'm speaking really fast and
- 00:20:32then they ask you tell me about yourself
- 00:20:34you go okay uh well you know um I've uh
- 00:20:36um I I I love selling i' all I do is
- 00:20:39sell I sell sell sell I'm I'm I'm
- 00:20:42persistent I'm also I get really high
- 00:20:44conversion rates
- 00:20:46I it's not good what you can do here is
- 00:20:49you can share a story you can prepare
- 00:20:51you know you're going in for a sales
- 00:20:52role and now because for those of you
- 00:20:54who've been through the courses online
- 00:20:55or virtual you know the storytelling
- 00:20:57formula and because you know the story
- 00:20:58toiling formula you can link that story
- 00:21:00to sales for example if I was going into
- 00:21:06a job in for sales I can sit down I'm
- 00:21:10relaxed body language because it
- 00:21:12communicates and it introduces you
- 00:21:13before you do so calm body language
- 00:21:15relaxed good posture you're sitting down
- 00:21:18smile on your face and Susie asks you
- 00:21:20hey Vin before we start uh why don't you
- 00:21:22tell us a little bit about yourself you
- 00:21:25can respond by going oh thanks Susie
- 00:21:27thank you for wanting to get to know me
- 00:21:28a little Susie I have to tell you I'm
- 00:21:32part entrepreneur when I was young when
- 00:21:33I was 13 I borrowed my Mom and Dad's
- 00:21:36credit card yeah I borrowed it and I
- 00:21:37borrowed her their credit card to buy
- 00:21:39MP3 players online so I spent over
- 00:21:42$1,500 and and Susie I can see from your
- 00:21:45face you're like oh but how did you get
- 00:21:48and spend money on the card when you're
- 00:21:49not authorized well Susie when the bank
- 00:21:51calls to check if the transactions
- 00:21:53legitimate guess who's the only english-
- 00:21:55speaking person in the house yes it is I
- 00:21:58it was one it was a perfect storm Susie
- 00:21:59I had to do it so so I bought $1,500
- 00:22:02worth MP3 plays and Susie the crazy
- 00:22:04thing is within 7 days I sold every
- 00:22:07single MP3 player and doubled my money
- 00:22:09when I was
- 00:22:1113 yeah I made 3,000 bucks as a 13y old
- 00:22:14and I wasn't doing drugs and Susie the
- 00:22:17craziest thing is that I've learned how
- 00:22:18to sell since I was young I learned how
- 00:22:21to sell the wrong way and also learned
- 00:22:24how to sell the right way one of the
- 00:22:25reasons why I got stopped from selling
- 00:22:27MP3 players at school is because I hope
- 00:22:30you don't mind me sharing this being a
- 00:22:31little vulnerable here the principal
- 00:22:33shut down my business because he
- 00:22:34realized that when people when people
- 00:22:36didn't pay me I started giving bullies
- 00:22:37money and said do you mind getting my
- 00:22:39money back from that kid he hasn't paid
- 00:22:40me Susie I didn't know how to deal with
- 00:22:42accounts receivable but Susie I've
- 00:22:44learned again how to sell and how not to
- 00:22:46sell and you know what one of the
- 00:22:47fundamental things I've learned Susie is
- 00:22:49I've learned that a lot of people feel a
- 00:22:51little gross about selling and I I found
- 00:22:54that the reason they feel that is
- 00:22:56because they're selling something they
- 00:22:57don't believe in
- 00:23:00where suie that's why I'm sitting in
- 00:23:02this chair right now applying for this
- 00:23:04role I fundamentally believe in what you
- 00:23:07do here at XYZ
- 00:23:09company it's why I'm here I'm not here
- 00:23:12just to sell I'm here to create impact
- 00:23:15because I fundamentally believe in what
- 00:23:16we do
- 00:23:18here linked okay so now that took about
- 00:23:23two and a half 3 minutes if I've got a
- 00:23:2530-minute interview I would
- 00:23:27invest that time into building
- 00:23:30connection and
- 00:23:31Rapport and that to me now allows you to
- 00:23:35be in a situation where sure whether
- 00:23:38you're qualified or not they kind of
- 00:23:39done that before by looking at your CV
- 00:23:42here they're trying to get to know you
- 00:23:43as a person yet if you jumped into that
- 00:23:45interview and you just started saying
- 00:23:47yes meal it's a true story it's a true
- 00:23:49story I did s MP3 players I was when I
- 00:23:51was young I used to download music
- 00:23:52illegally from Napster can we just make
- 00:23:54sure this never gets recorded and
- 00:23:55uploaded online I used to download music
- 00:23:57illegally on Napster I didn't know it
- 00:23:58was illegal so I didn't know it was so
- 00:24:00it wasn't cuz I was 13 right and then I
- 00:24:02just downloaded the music put on MP3
- 00:24:04plays sold them the MP3 plays every time
- 00:24:06they wanted to change music five bucks
- 00:24:08it's fantastic I was the only kid
- 00:24:0913-year-old that had multiple types of
- 00:24:11cologne and still the lady ladies didn't
- 00:24:14like me no matter what I did some reason
- 00:24:17they didn't find me attractive it's fine
- 00:24:18it's fine I Found Love anyway in your
- 00:24:21face Stacy from when I was 12 Look at me
- 00:24:25now Stacy I'm kidding I'm kidding but I
- 00:24:28still have some resentment inside for
- 00:24:30sure all right so I think I've proved
- 00:24:32the point there as well that in these
- 00:24:35moments when you're in high stake
- 00:24:36situations when you have the 30 minutes
- 00:24:38it's absolutely critical to invest 5 to
- 00:24:4110% of that time building
- 00:24:44connection 100% they're going to favor
- 00:24:46you more now it's inevitable versus if
- 00:24:48everybody else just came in and said I'm
- 00:24:50reliable I'm punctual I've got high
- 00:24:52conversion
- 00:24:53rates trust me I'm not saying this works
- 00:24:55100% of the time but it works 95% of the
- 00:24:58time I mean that guy right there is
- 00:25:01evidence totally not qualified totally
- 00:25:05HED cuz he's likable as hell love that
- 00:25:08guy she doesn't fight back it's
- 00:25:11fantastic I got to stop doing this I'm
- 00:25:14going to go to jail I'm going to go a
- 00:25:15jail down far too often in the corporate
- 00:25:17space in the professional space we focus
- 00:25:20on our visual image we go into a home
- 00:25:22make sure we're in a suit or beautiful
- 00:25:24dress or we what we going to meet our
- 00:25:26clients with we focus on our visual IM
- 00:25:28image but we do not focus on our vocal
- 00:25:32image people don't realize but you have
- 00:25:35an image that you create vocally when
- 00:25:36you use your voice let me ask you this
- 00:25:39question how many of you in this room
- 00:25:42think I'm a think I'm a friendly person
- 00:25:43raise your hands oh thank you thank you
- 00:25:46very much and I will take note of those
- 00:25:47of you who didn't raise your hands thank
- 00:25:48you make you disappear
- 00:25:51later good how many of you think I'm a
- 00:25:54trustworthy person a magician asking the
- 00:25:56question thank you lovely and how many
- 00:25:58of you think I'm an intelligent person
- 00:26:00and one last one how many do you think
- 00:26:01I'm a good leader to my team lovely so
- 00:26:04what I'll tell you is none of you know
- 00:26:06me well enough to know if any of those
- 00:26:07things are true you don't but you've
- 00:26:10made those assumptions based on my vocal
- 00:26:13image and my visual image but most
- 00:26:15people only focus on their visual image
- 00:26:18and forget about their vocal image don't
- 00:26:22leave this to
- 00:26:23chance if you want to build rapport with
- 00:26:25people if you want to learn how to build
- 00:26:27trust you need to learn how to master
- 00:26:30the advisor's instrument this is very
- 00:26:32powerful so I ask you as you move
- 00:26:34forward to train your instrument I ask
- 00:26:35you to be courageous I ask you to train
- 00:26:38the advisor's instrument so you connect
- 00:26:39more with the people you serve because
- 00:26:42only when we connect with people do we
- 00:26:43deserve to influence their
- 00:26:45decision it only takes one
- 00:26:49voice at the right
- 00:26:52pitch to start an avalanche because let
- 00:26:55me tell you this how does a chef become
- 00:26:57a great chef
- 00:27:00this is the interactive part yes cooking
- 00:27:03yes cooking but what do they have to do
- 00:27:05practice but with whose
- 00:27:09recipes other people's recipes right
- 00:27:12other recipes they they you know if
- 00:27:14you're just starting as a chef you don't
- 00:27:15go I'm going to cook this thing this new
- 00:27:16thing no one's ever no you follow the
- 00:27:19recipes from great chefs so what they do
- 00:27:21is they imitate they copy and in the
- 00:27:24world of cooking when you copy a great
- 00:27:26Chef's kind of dish no one's like you
- 00:27:28shouldn't copy it's bad no you you
- 00:27:29should do this is how you learn so then
- 00:27:31the chef copies it and what happens the
- 00:27:33first time he copies it gets it slightly
- 00:27:34wrong doesn't taste quite right he goes
- 00:27:36oh but I'm getting close builds
- 00:27:37confidence cuz you're following a proven
- 00:27:39method and then he copies it again the
- 00:27:42second time tastes a little bit better
- 00:27:43third time tastes great fourth time he's
- 00:27:45confident fifth time he's like I'm
- 00:27:46adding a bit of
- 00:27:48lemon and then he adds a bit of lemon
- 00:27:50makes it his
- 00:27:52own this is the same process we all must
- 00:27:54follow if we want to become great
- 00:27:55communicators is we must find someone
- 00:27:57now like Manuel looking for great
- 00:27:59communicators that we like allowing them
- 00:28:02to influence us and allowing ourselves
- 00:28:05to imitate it's okay to imitate but it's
- 00:28:08not okay to imitate forever and never
- 00:28:10add lemon or chives or onion or garlic
- 00:28:14right you have to start making things
- 00:28:16your own but the fastest way to improve
- 00:28:18is to look for people you like so you've
- 00:28:20got a proven recipe that works and and
- 00:28:22please don't make sure the speaker is a
- 00:28:24speaker that is good don't like bad
- 00:28:27speakers
- 00:28:29so again look for that and it helps you
- 00:28:31develop your own flavor even if you
- 00:28:33found two Inspirations you're already
- 00:28:35something unique by copying those two
- 00:28:37people it's fascinating so imitation is
- 00:28:39not a bad thing it's a great it's the
- 00:28:42most important thing when it comes to
- 00:28:43learning Haven how do you deal with
- 00:28:44nerves before you present and this is a
- 00:28:48wonderful question that I do feel
- 00:28:49extremely qualified to answer because
- 00:28:51because I've done over a thousand
- 00:28:53presentations in my career I've spoken
- 00:28:55to groups small as 10 to 20 to groups as
- 00:28:59large as over 35,000 people and talk
- 00:29:03about nerves I still remember the day
- 00:29:05where I presented to it was in Thailand
- 00:29:07in Bangkok Thailand where I spoke to an
- 00:29:09audience of over 35,000 people I was
- 00:29:12backstage so nervous and if I didn't
- 00:29:14have a method and methods on how to
- 00:29:17manage nerves I would have done a
- 00:29:19terrible
- 00:29:20presentation and and here's something
- 00:29:22that most people don't get what they
- 00:29:24don't get is generally most of us are
- 00:29:27great communicators and and when I meet
- 00:29:29people oneone and I talk to them they're
- 00:29:31great communicators they they
- 00:29:32communicate exceptionally well right and
- 00:29:34then when they get on
- 00:29:36stage all of those great communication
- 00:29:38skills just disappear and then they this
- 00:29:41Bland stiff Aid presenter and I'm
- 00:29:45thinking wait what the hell I just met
- 00:29:46someone who was really engaging what
- 00:29:48happened to that person and it was
- 00:29:50because they didn't know how to manage
- 00:29:51the nerves and the nerves robbed them of
- 00:29:54a great presentation so this is a very
- 00:29:55important topic now I think of managing
- 00:29:59nerves in two core different ways I
- 00:30:02first think about it from a body point
- 00:30:04of view how do I manage the nerves from
- 00:30:07a body standpoint so the way that I
- 00:30:09manage my nerves from that standpoint is
- 00:30:12I think about breathing a lot and
- 00:30:15breathing is something that we all do
- 00:30:17every single day and we all think oh
- 00:30:19it's breathing it's easy we all know how
- 00:30:20to breathe I know how to breathe I don't
- 00:30:21need to learn how to breathe no no no no
- 00:30:24you're wrong there are workshops that go
- 00:30:26for a whole week just on learning how to
- 00:30:29master the
- 00:30:30breath and unless you want to actually
- 00:30:33go along and do one of those workshops
- 00:30:35one of the greatest hacks when it comes
- 00:30:37to breathing is Wim Hoff when it comes
- 00:30:39to Wim Hof breathing the link will be
- 00:30:41down below as you learn how to do this
- 00:30:45what it's going to do is it's going to
- 00:30:46help you relax your
- 00:30:48body and it also helps relax your mind
- 00:30:52which is the second component of how to
- 00:30:53deal with nerves so it's a it's a it's a
- 00:30:56one stone two birds Type move so again I
- 00:31:00would I don't know why there are
- 00:31:02balloons all of a sudden but I would
- 00:31:04ensure that you learn how to do a couple
- 00:31:07of cycles of wiim Hof breathing because
- 00:31:09that helps you manage the nerves in your
- 00:31:11body and it also helps you manage your
- 00:31:13psychology now that's the first thing I
- 00:31:15would do the second thing I would do is
- 00:31:17another kind of body
- 00:31:18standpoint one of the key reasons why
- 00:31:20our voice shakes when we are presenting
- 00:31:23and one of the key reasons why our hands
- 00:31:25shake and sometimes we get all different
- 00:31:28symptoms everyone get different types of
- 00:31:29symptoms sometimes people their their
- 00:31:30whole body shakes and their feet Shake
- 00:31:32everything one of the key reasons that
- 00:31:34happens is because of excess adrenaline
- 00:31:37and you need to learn how to manage the
- 00:31:38adrenaline that's in your body the
- 00:31:39excess levels of adrenaline so what you
- 00:31:41can do is before you go on stage while
- 00:31:44you're backstage go for a quick walk and
- 00:31:47W walk at a quicker Pace maybe do some
- 00:31:49star jumps drop down give me 10 push-ups
- 00:31:52right because by doing
- 00:31:55this activity or or by exerting more
- 00:31:58energy you're getting rid of the excess
- 00:32:00adrenaline which stops your body from
- 00:32:02shaking which stopped your hands from
- 00:32:04shaking which then helps you not have a
- 00:32:06shaky voice when you speak and one of
- 00:32:09the worst things that happen to Great
- 00:32:11communicators and and great public
- 00:32:13speakers when they don't manage the
- 00:32:15excess adrenaline when they go on stage
- 00:32:17then they start just moving all over the
- 00:32:19stage they start prowling all over the
- 00:32:20stage and that's a non-functional
- 00:32:23behavior especially if there's no reason
- 00:32:24for you to move like that so keep in
- 00:32:27mind
- 00:32:28getting rid of that excess adrenaline is
- 00:32:30a very important part of the process
- 00:32:31when you're trying to deal with nerves
- 00:32:33now we talked about a body a lot right
- 00:32:35so the body is exercise little bit of
- 00:32:37exercise and then also a little bit of
- 00:32:39Wim Hoff breathing two to three cycles
- 00:32:41of that amazing now then you also have
- 00:32:43to think about nerves when it comes to
- 00:32:45mindset I think one of the main reasons
- 00:32:47we get nervous when it comes to
- 00:32:49psychology and the way we think is
- 00:32:50because we think everybody is thinking
- 00:32:52about us we fear judgment right so again
- 00:32:56a lot of the times when we go on stage
- 00:32:59we get nervous because we become
- 00:33:00extremely
- 00:33:02self-conscious so then if you don't want
- 00:33:04to get extremely nervous and don't want
- 00:33:06to be extremely self-conscious what do
- 00:33:08you do you take that Consciousness in
- 00:33:10your head and you place it outward focus
- 00:33:13on the audience it's not about you it's
- 00:33:17not about you as much as you think it's
- 00:33:18about you it's not about you when you're
- 00:33:20on stage it's all about the audience
- 00:33:21you're there to give value to the people
- 00:33:23that are in the audience it's not about
- 00:33:25you and the more you get out of your own
- 00:33:28head and into the audience the more you
- 00:33:31can be less self-conscious the more you
- 00:33:32can be more audience conscious the
- 00:33:35better you're going to feel and that's
- 00:33:37what I always do when I'm I'm about to
- 00:33:39get on stage and I'm starting to feel a
- 00:33:40bit nervous I just think to myself you
- 00:33:42know what Vin stop it it's it's it's not
- 00:33:45about you today it's about the 500
- 00:33:47people that you're about to be able to
- 00:33:49help these are the things that really
- 00:33:51help me it's known as 88 keys
- 00:34:038
- 00:34:04Keys refers to the keys on a
- 00:34:08piano and I remember being taught this
- 00:34:10philosophy and way of life with
- 00:34:12communication with one of my music
- 00:34:14teachers and I went to a vocal teacher
- 00:34:16not to learn singing but rather to learn
- 00:34:18how to speak more effectively and she
- 00:34:21said Vin a piano has 88 keys and your
- 00:34:24voice is even more beautiful than this
- 00:34:26instrument right in front of me
- 00:34:29me and here's what I want to share with
- 00:34:31you right now you're very comfortable
- 00:34:33playing the keys you currently play with
- 00:34:35during this Workshop I'm going to push
- 00:34:37you I'm going to get you to do things
- 00:34:38with your voice that you've never done
- 00:34:39before and I'm going to even push you in
- 00:34:41further than you know maybe play in the
- 00:34:42faletto range and have a bit of fun and
- 00:34:44I know I sound like Mickey Mouse when I
- 00:34:46do this my son loves it and I might even
- 00:34:49get you to try really deep and dark
- 00:34:51voice and play and when I ask you to do
- 00:34:54this something happens in your brain
- 00:34:56straight away where the moment push you
- 00:34:58out of the keys that feel comfortable
- 00:34:59you'll go been thank you but that makes
- 00:35:02me feel a bit little bit fake and
- 00:35:04phony I mean how is it fake and phony
- 00:35:06you are able to make the sound it's not
- 00:35:08fake or phony it's your instrument it's
- 00:35:10your keys it's not fake and phony so the
- 00:35:13moment your brain goes to fake and phony
- 00:35:15and
- 00:35:16inauthentic stop that straight away
- 00:35:18reframe it immediately it's not fake and
- 00:35:21phony you're just familiar with these
- 00:35:24Keys you're just unfamiliar with these
- 00:35:27keys
- 00:35:29that's all so please note that it's just
- 00:35:32familiar unfamiliar so the moment your
- 00:35:35brain anytime it wants to go to
- 00:35:37inauthentic I don't want to try that
- 00:35:38that doesn't feel right for me stop it
- 00:35:40reframe it's just unfamiliar to me
- 00:35:43that's all that allows the learning
- 00:35:45process to continue otherwise your brain
- 00:35:48will stop you from even exploring your
- 00:35:50instrument we're here to learn how to
- 00:35:53play the entire instrument so please
- 00:35:56you're just unfamiliar with it
- 00:35:58what helped me build all of my
- 00:36:00confidence was
- 00:36:02improv uh improv classes this is the
- 00:36:05very theater I first learned improv in
- 00:36:07it's why I do all of my events here it's
- 00:36:09a very special place in my heart so if
- 00:36:11you want to get more confident improv
- 00:36:13and I'll tell you why let's try
- 00:36:15something so stand up we're going to
- 00:36:17play a game and the game is called uh
- 00:36:19it's a presence game okay so this is how
- 00:36:21the presidency Game Works uh I'm going
- 00:36:23to be person a and I'm just going to say
- 00:36:24oh hey it's your birthday and I've got
- 00:36:26something for you Tanya and then you
- 00:36:28take it and then you got to look at it
- 00:36:29and you go you open the box and you go
- 00:36:32you got me a blank how did you know I
- 00:36:35wanted a blank and then I'm going to say
- 00:36:38I knew you wanted a blank because of
- 00:36:40blank so you're saying you got me a
- 00:36:44blank how did you know I wanted a blank
- 00:36:46does that make sense y Tanya it's your

- 00:40:12an environment where people know who you
- 00:40:14are and they know you're naturally quiet
- 00:40:16for example and you come into that
- 00:40:18environment you're like hey guys trying
- 00:40:21something
- 00:40:23new they're going to be like they'll be

- 00:40:28squatting what is happening and and
- 00:40:31here's the thing so I need to teach you
- 00:40:33something very important there's a
- 00:40:35concept I teach in my workshops and what
- 00:40:37it's called is it's called neutral
- 00:40:39ears a neutral ear is someone who has no
- 00:40:42preconceived idea of who you are and
- 00:40:44what you're like so for example you're
- 00:40:47in Toronto you may go to the local Deli
- 00:40:50here you're like that person doesn't
- 00:40:52know who I am I'm normally quiet buger
- 00:40:54it you go in and you go good after
- 00:40:57afternoon do you have any Bagels
- 00:41:01here and they will just accept you for
- 00:41:03who you are and they'll be like gosh
- 00:41:05that's a loud person but
- 00:41:08anyway but what that does is you don't
- 00:41:11get the the Flinch because from your
- 00:41:13friends they'll going to be like what
- 00:41:14are you doing just that slight Flinch
- 00:41:16will make you go back into your mold but
- 00:41:19when you find a neutral ear and you try
- 00:41:21something different with your voice they
- 00:41:23don't Flinch they just accept you for
- 00:41:25who you are CU they don't know any
- 00:41:26better that helps your new
- 00:41:29behavior stick that little bit more and
- 00:41:33a place where you could you hopefully
- 00:41:35you're all not in your home City there's
- 00:41:37plenty of neutral ears here try

- 00:41:52that's the only way you explore but
- 00:41:54there's always going to be one thing
- 00:41:56that stops you from doing this that do
- 00:41:57you know what it
- 00:41:58is fear did someone say fear but you see
- 00:42:02look look let's be real for a second
- 00:42:04look danger or danger is very real but
- 00:42:07fear fear is not a useful feeling fear
- 00:42:10is Just an Illusion but why is this
- 00:42:13important again in the context of
- 00:42:15communication so many people when they
- 00:42:17leave this little workshop of ours you
