00:00:11
people often ask the age-old question
00:00:13
father if God is really so merciful how
00:00:17
can there be such suffering in the world
00:00:19
well one day I was in Chicago during
00:00:22
doing a parish mission with a brother of
00:00:24
mine named brother Allen and we finished
00:00:27
for the evening and we had to drive all
00:00:28
the way across the city of Chicago to
00:00:30
get back to our parish it's a long drive
00:00:32
and we were hungry and we hadn't eaten
00:00:33
since noon that day should we get into
00:00:36
line we're looking at the menu and all
00:00:37
the sudden in walks this man through the
00:00:39
door with a just angry look on his face
00:00:42
now we're at the end of the line and
00:00:45
were in our collars and this man walks
00:00:47
through the door and when he does he
00:00:49
looks up and sees us sure enough this
00:00:53
look on his face turns to extreme anger
00:00:56
and he comes right at us and he comes at
00:00:59
me with his two fingers and he gm's them
00:01:02
into my collar and he sits there and
00:01:05
pokes into my khatma this time
00:01:07
everybody's watching as he's jamming his
00:01:09
fingers into my collar he is yelling at
00:01:11
me you tell me how your God could let my
00:01:18
five year old niece die of leukemia
00:01:22
now we have everybody in the restaurant
00:01:25
watching so being freshly-minted out of
00:01:29
seminary I start giving some long-winded
00:01:31
answer about original sin and it's a
00:01:34
consequence of original sin and Thomas
00:01:36
Aquinas says so he says she was five she
00:01:39
didn't have any sin and I said well it
00:01:42
was my sin not necessarily hearse and
00:01:44
she didn't sin you're right but all of
00:01:46
our sins caused this he was so angry at
00:01:50
this well luckily my brother Alan was
00:01:53
there and he pushed me to the side and
00:01:55
he said sir what's your name something I
00:01:59
had forgotten to do and he said Harold
00:02:01
he said Harold do you believe in God and
00:02:05
Harold said I don't know I just don't
00:02:08
know and then Alan said to him well
00:02:11
Harold I believe and I don't know you
00:02:14
well but I believe that in fact I can
00:02:18
tell you there is a little girl sitting
00:02:19
on the lap of Jesus up in heaven that is
00:02:22
praying for you now Harold I don't know
00:02:25
it may not be today may not be tomorrow
00:02:27
may not be to the end of your life but
00:02:29
if I was a bad man I would say that you
00:02:32
are gonna come back to God through her
00:02:34
little prayers God wants to bring a
00:02:37
greater good out of even the worst evil
00:02:40
I know you're wondering what good could
00:02:42
possibly come out of this and yes it's
00:02:44
true God didn't want this God didn't
00:02:47
want the death of your little niece and
00:02:49
in fact in his ordained will he was
00:02:51
something that he absolutely does not
00:02:53
want or desire but in this permissive
00:02:56
will he allows it and that must be so
00:03:00
difficult to understand but remember
00:03:02
Harold he will bring a greater good out
00:03:04
of anything and the greater good are
00:03:07
those prayers that could come in to help
00:03:09
you and determine to be saved for all
00:03:12
eternity
00:03:12
and that is a much more important thing
00:03:14
than this world it's hard to understand
00:03:17
but I believe it is true and Harold so
00:03:20
can you I do believe that day that
00:03:22
brother Allen opened his heart a little
00:03:24
bit now I pray for him I don't know what
00:03:27
happened to him but it's a difficult
00:03:29
understanding about how God could allow
00:03:30
us to suffer like this but again he
00:03:33
wants to bring a greater good you see
00:03:35
when God gave us free will
00:03:37
he took the ultimate risk what risk is
00:03:40
that it's a risk that we would turn away
00:03:43
from him it's a risk that we would maybe
00:03:45
even deny him
00:03:46
God gave us a great gift and free will
00:03:49
he doesn't want our love to be robotic
00:03:51
he doesn't want us to just be slaves or
00:03:54
robots saying yes to him he wants our
00:03:56
free will yes he wants our love to be
00:04:00
unconditionally yes and the problem is
00:04:03
that when he took that risk there was a
00:04:05
chance that we would hurt each other and
00:04:07
that we would hurt him so the
00:04:09
consequence of our free will is that
00:04:12
there is sin and the consequence of sin
00:04:14
is suffering unfortunately this is a
00:04:17
reality but God loves us too much to
00:04:19
take away our free will and when he
00:04:22
gives us that free will these are the
00:04:23
consequences that come with it if we
00:04:25
choose not to love our neighbor or
00:04:27
especially not to love him why would a
00:04:30
merciful God allow such suffering well
00:04:32
there's another reason and
00:04:34
are many but one of the biggest things
00:04:36
that keeps us separated from God is our
00:04:38
pride we feel we are God and that is all
00:04:42
that matters
00:04:43
God is God and we are not but sometimes
00:04:45
we don't realize that we think we are
00:04:47
God look at Adam and Eve in the garden
00:04:49
so pride is that great sin now suffering
00:04:54
crucifies pride
00:04:56
it actually takes our pride to the cross
00:04:58
and it is through that suffering that
00:05:00
our pride is hid and many times we are
00:05:03
humbled unfortunately it takes something
00:05:06
like a tragedy in life before many
00:05:07
people turn back to God but you know
00:05:10
what he'll allow it though he does not
00:05:11
want it because it's more important for
00:05:14
him not to have you lost for all
00:05:16
eternity it's more important for him to
00:05:18
remove any obstacle that is between you
00:05:21
and him and pride is the biggest of all
00:05:24
so if suffering in any way can crucify
00:05:27
that pride our Lord is having mercy on
00:05:30
us you know if we don't have love the
00:05:32
Cross is just simply an instrument of
00:05:34
torture but what we can realize is that
00:05:37
when we do love we realize that love is
00:05:40
a sacrifice love comes with sacrifice
00:05:44
I'm willing to love you so much that I
00:05:47
will lay my life down for you and that's
00:05:49
just what Jesus did for us the thing is
00:05:52
is with sacrifice comes suffering we saw
00:05:55
it with Christ on the cross and when we
00:05:57
suffer we too are sharing in that cross
00:06:00
remember Paul said I must complete what
00:06:04
is lacking in the sufferings of Christ
00:06:06
for the sake of his body the church well
00:06:09
what could possibly be lacking in the
00:06:11
sufferings of Christ our sufferings so
00:06:14
we need to unite our sufferings with the
00:06:17
cross of Christ you can do it at the
00:06:19
mass in your daily prayer it's a
00:06:21
beautiful gift back to God because
00:06:24
suffering goes so against our human
00:06:26
nature that when we accepted and offer
00:06:28
it back up to the Creator it is
00:06:30
redemptive john paul ii said that
00:06:34
suffering Christ sanctified and he gives
00:06:38
us that opportunity to share in his
00:06:39
cross
00:06:40
so please John Paul said suffering is
00:06:43
salvific don't waste it
00:06:46
it is a very special gift that along
00:06:49
with love is inseparable and we saw with
00:06:53
Christ on the cross how much love he had
00:06:55
for us through his ultimate sacrifice so
00:06:58
you know I'd like to finish by saying I
00:07:00
often visit nursing homes and in those
00:07:03
nursing homes I see many people who are
00:07:05
suffering and they tell me all the time
00:07:07
father I'm such a burden I'm a burden to
00:07:09
my family I'm a burden to my friends I'm
00:07:12
a burden of this staff here at this home
00:07:14
father what is the teaching unassisted
00:07:17
suicide I think I should end it this is
00:07:20
is needless I'm just suffering I want to
00:07:24
not suffer anymore and I say to these
00:07:27
people please don't misunderstand the
00:07:29
role of suffering you see in your
00:07:32
suffering you have more power than an
00:07:34
atomic bomb you have the power to
00:07:37
release Souls from purgatory you have
00:07:39
the power to offer it up for the
00:07:41
salvation of souls of your loved ones
00:07:43
your family your friends and to atone
00:07:45
for your own sins for your own salvation
00:07:48
you are going with Christ to the cross
00:07:52
but you will soon be resurrected you
00:07:55
will soon be with him in glory if you
00:07:58
accept that cross because Jesus says the
00:08:01
cross is the weight of glory so we
00:08:03
shouldn't necessarily ask God to take
00:08:05
our crosses away from us we should ask
00:08:07
him to give us the grace to remain
00:08:09
steadfastly on the cross and when we do
00:08:13
our suffering offered with him becomes
00:08:16
redemptive you know people often ask me
00:08:19
father
00:08:20
what particular blessing could there
00:08:22
ever be found in suffering and you know
00:08:24
what the answer is
00:08:25
hope hope because in Christ's suffering
00:08:30
he resurrected in our suffering United
00:08:33
to his cross we can be resurrected to
00:08:36
eternal life and we don't have to pray
00:08:38
Lord give me more suffering what did
00:08:40
Jesus say in the garden he said Lord if
00:08:42
possible let this cup pass me by we
00:08:45
should do the same Lord if I'm suffering
00:08:47
please let this cup pass me by but if it
00:08:50
be your will done not mine
00:08:52
give me the grace to accept it this will
00:08:55
give us some meaning and some purpose
00:08:57
and most of all
00:08:59
hope in the mercy of God
