- 00:00:04through dereck's truck Dereck is a RV
- 00:00:07transporter and does a ton of miles and
- 00:00:10what's the the truck at right now uh
- 00:00:13it's 923,50
- 00:00:30got one and we're running well yes I
- 00:00:32mean it came out the summer before I
- 00:00:34think or the fall before yeah uh but
- 00:00:37yeah I I I I have a 2011 as well with
- 00:00:41725,000 Mi on it and when I bought this
- 00:00:476 days later a glow plug broke in that
- 00:00:50other truck while I Was preparing to
- 00:00:52leave to get a camper CU I wasn't using
- 00:00:53this to tow yet right and it got
- 00:00:56ingested into the engine and broke some
- 00:00:57push rods and oh no yeah so then how did
- 00:01:00you how did you get
- 00:01:02into RV transport from being a
- 00:01:05corrections officer and you said you did
- 00:01:06a little like local hauling um yeah so
- 00:01:09when I when I when I left doing
- 00:01:12Corrections um my snow removal business
- 00:01:16was really busy so that's why I left
- 00:01:18that and
- 00:01:19um I got into the
- 00:01:23hauling landscape supplies um when it in
- 00:01:27the you know spring fall and summer you
- 00:01:29know when it wasn't snowing
- 00:01:30and so I could keep the trucks working
- 00:01:32right and um that that business ended up
- 00:01:37phasing out not my end but their end
- 00:01:39right so I was looking for something to
- 00:01:40do in the summer gotcha and my my son
- 00:01:45did cart racing yeah um and I met
- 00:01:48somebody in cart racing who was doing
- 00:01:50this right and he said why don't you try
- 00:01:51doing that and I was like well I'll give
- 00:01:53it a try that was so I met him in the
- 00:01:56summer of 2011 and in the February March
- 00:02:01of 2012 is when I started wow with the
- 00:02:03same same Transport company I've been
- 00:02:04with the whole time so yeah well that's
- 00:02:06really cool well uh I appreciate all
- 00:02:09that background and I think you know I
- 00:02:12just really want to hear what you do to
- 00:02:15maintain this truck so I think we'll
- 00:02:18kind of like start through some things
- 00:02:20like we can start at the top with fluids
- 00:02:23and filters which is you know kind of
- 00:02:25the basics uh because that's obviously
- 00:02:28what I and I'm sure
- 00:02:30a lot of folks uh watching are going to
- 00:02:34want to know what exactly you've done to
- 00:02:36get a truck to 9 22,000 so yeah let's
- 00:02:39start I mean fluids and filters what's
- 00:02:42uh well what are you doing to to me also
- 00:02:44too I'm glad you said that fuel fuel
- 00:02:47filters and and fluids are definitely
- 00:02:50the most important thing other than how
- 00:02:52you drive it of course okay um without a
- 00:02:55doubt without a doubt um cuz so the most
- 00:02:59important thing I've done with this is a
- 00:03:03bypass oil
- 00:03:04filter um that is the without a doubt I
- 00:03:07think the I I I would never own another
- 00:03:12internal combustion engine ever and it
- 00:03:15doesn't matter what it is without one of
- 00:03:17these filters in if I'm going to keep it
- 00:03:21you know like right doing this work as
- 00:03:22you know you don't go through a truck
- 00:03:24every year you're going to get a truck
- 00:03:26and you're going to keep it and you're
- 00:03:28going to run it right into the ground
- 00:03:29take care of it right you take care of
- 00:03:31it it's going to take care of you right
- 00:03:32cuz the longer it lasts the better your
- 00:03:34profit margins are right yeah right like
- 00:03:36as soon as you get it paid off or
- 00:03:37whatever then everything after that you
- 00:03:39know you just maintenance and it's all
- 00:03:41gravy right um so but I did the bypass
- 00:03:44filter I did some uh I did some research
- 00:03:47you know and I was checking out
- 00:03:48different bypass filters and whatnot and
- 00:03:51um the reason I I didn't even know about
- 00:03:54B let me back up I didn't even know
- 00:03:55about bypass filters but when I was
- 00:03:57looking at ways to make my truck last
- 00:03:59longer that kept coming up okay so then
- 00:04:02I started looking at them and I was like
- 00:04:05oh this will make my truck last longer
- 00:04:07and it'll help me save money and of
- 00:04:09course doing this type of work you know
- 00:04:11you everything you can save it's a
- 00:04:13increase your profit of course with any
- 00:04:15type of other business so right so um
- 00:04:18you know with oil testing I know in some
- 00:04:21your previous videos with lake and stuff
- 00:04:22you do oil analysis and um which is
- 00:04:25fantastic I mean I've gone 30,000 mil
- 00:04:29sometimes without oil change wow because
- 00:04:31it the testing says it's fine and as he
- 00:04:33says it's not what it's not speculation
- 00:04:36right you know yeah you know it's it's
- 00:04:38it's data it's real life data right my
- 00:04:41engine that I had in this this is a new
- 00:04:43engine was featured in Dave's Auto
- 00:04:45Center one of his videos right right um
- 00:04:48and uh if you see the inside of that
- 00:04:50engine then you'll be like that can't be
- 00:04:53real but it's 100% real I mean right and
- 00:04:56you got
- 00:04:57892 out of that original that was
- 00:05:00original engine and original
- 00:05:01transmission
- 00:05:02$892,000 miles and original cp4 pump man
- 00:05:06too yeah that is that is crazy so I I
- 00:05:09mean talking about the cp4 so it sounds
- 00:05:11like what's your what's your normal
- 00:05:13protection plan for the cp4 I know you'd
- 00:05:15mentioned kind of before we started the
- 00:05:17video uh that you ran the Ford additive
- 00:05:22and then and then then something else
- 00:05:24you also put in what were you running
- 00:05:25for your additive mix okay so not fuel
- 00:05:28additive not the whole life of this not
- 00:05:30a drop of fuel has been in it without
- 00:05:32the Ford additive okay um it tested
- 00:05:36really good I can I'll provide you with
- 00:05:37that information after if you'd like um
- 00:05:39so you can see um but it tested really
- 00:05:41good in the top five of all the
- 00:05:43additives and this was you know 10 years
- 00:05:45ago whatever before I had this truck
- 00:05:46even right right right right and um you
- 00:05:48know and in the winter I would add it I
- 00:05:50would keep that additive but just put an
- 00:05:52antiel additive add to it so I would be
- 00:05:55overdosing and I overdose anyway right
- 00:05:58you know it says I think it's like 4 o
- 00:06:00or 5 O for every 25 gallons and I would
- 00:06:02put you just round up no I way way up
- 00:06:05cuz cuz the tank in the back's 118
- 00:06:07gallons and I would if it was empty I
- 00:06:08would put two bottles so 40 ounces and
- 00:06:11then I would put one bottle in the 50
- 00:06:12gallon tank right and I just overtreat
- 00:06:14it and people say oh you're wasting too
- 00:06:16much M you're wasting a lot of money
- 00:06:17doing a lot extra and I was like well I
- 00:06:20mean my cp4 pump is lasted 900,000 miles
- 00:06:23so I guess I'll stick with bad for it so
- 00:06:26and then uh the the company that I the
- 00:06:28diesel the sorry Oil Filter Company I
- 00:06:30use insane diesel they also make an
- 00:06:33additive now as well as oil so when once
- 00:06:36they came out with their oil and
- 00:06:38additive I started using that um it's
- 00:06:41called Lorenzo's Oil but I add it to the
- 00:06:43Ford stuff I I won't stop using the Ford
- 00:06:46stuff for there's something good about
- 00:06:48it I I forgot to ask like what are your
- 00:06:50oil change intervals normally so you
- 00:06:52said you went 30,000 and the oil was
- 00:06:54fine on one interval what what's like
- 00:06:56normal for you then uh 15 15,000 started
- 00:06:59doing the 30 um when I knew the
- 00:07:03um okay so you spend as much time in the
- 00:07:06vehicles as we do when you hear things
- 00:07:08you know things don't sound right you
- 00:07:09just know it right right and so I was
- 00:07:11like 900,000 Mi I'm sure my run is
- 00:07:14coming to an end right so I started
- 00:07:16pushing my oil changes so when I started
- 00:07:21you know just like a lot of people that
- 00:07:22I'm sure are going to watch this are be
- 00:07:23like oh three 5 th 3 to 5,000 miles have
- 00:07:26to change have to change have to change
- 00:07:28so of course that was in my head right
- 00:07:30and so when I put the filter on I was
- 00:07:33like I change it at 5,000 and test the
- 00:07:36oil change it at another 5,000 test you
- 00:07:39know so I did it to get kind of a
- 00:07:41baseline right and then I upped it to 10
- 00:07:43okay between intervals and then I upped
- 00:07:45it to 15 and at 15 I'm like you know
- 00:07:48what I'm playing with house money I'm
- 00:07:50saving two oil changes right so there
- 00:07:52400 bucks right there I'm saving right
- 00:07:54okay which is $400 a month right so why
- 00:07:57push it I'll just change the in the
- 00:08:00filters but but the longest you ever did
- 00:08:02was 30,000 28 somewhere around there
- 00:08:05yeah yeah yeah and it's still tested
- 00:08:07okay I mean it wasn't like it was at
- 00:08:09what kind of oil what kind of oil was
- 00:08:10that again okay so I started using um
- 00:08:13mobile one delvac 1540 okay ESP um the
- 00:08:18the the gray the gray bottle for some
- 00:08:20reason they have delvac and it's not
- 00:08:22synthetic and it's in a black bottle but
- 00:08:23it's called it says delac on it the same
- 00:08:26I don't understand it but anyway um and
- 00:08:28then it with Lucas Oil which I stopped
- 00:08:31using Lucas Oil when Lakes speed said I
- 00:08:32was wasting my money yeah uh but anyway
- 00:08:36and then I uh at around 700 to 750,000 I
- 00:08:40started using the Loren
- 00:08:42Lorenzo insane diesel sells Lorenzo's
- 00:08:45Oil yeah um same 1540 um I started using
- 00:08:49that so so what are you doing then for
- 00:08:51like fuel filters I know you said
- 00:08:53earlier we were chatting you're still
- 00:08:54running the OEM plastic upper and then
- 00:08:57the lower water separator filter what
- 00:08:59are your intervals for those I change
- 00:09:00those anytime I change my oil or filters
- 00:09:05so for whatever reason I change the fuel
- 00:09:07filters okay okay unless when I pushed
- 00:09:10it to 27 25,000 I changed it to 15,000
- 00:09:14okay I didn't but if I have a so it's
- 00:09:17like oil change or 15,000 so as you're
- 00:09:20familiar with I had upper o upper and
- 00:09:22lower oil pan leak right and that was
- 00:09:25recently after an oil change you know
- 00:09:27like a few thousand several thousand
- 00:09:29miles whatever right so when I did that
- 00:09:32of course you get new oil right and
- 00:09:34filters so I did my fuel filters just
- 00:09:36because it's easier for me to keep track
- 00:09:38of if I just keep everything on the
- 00:09:40schedule same with transmission and
- 00:09:41coolant I do those every 50,000 miles no
- 00:09:44matter what um and I don't flush
- 00:09:47anything I drain and fill the
- 00:09:50transmission I take the pan drop the pan
- 00:09:52and change the filter every time um and
- 00:09:55if I have a coolant leak or something or
- 00:09:58I need to replace a radiator
- 00:10:00and the coolant going to be drained and
- 00:10:01it's been 20,000 mil then I'm I'm doing
- 00:10:04the transmission too the same time you
- 00:10:06know to keep on the same 50,000 schedule
- 00:10:08so yeah yeah um gotcha what about um so
- 00:10:12you do do you do transfer case too when
- 00:10:14you do the transmission uh what about
- 00:10:16like your transfer case and your
- 00:10:18differentials that one I could be a
- 00:10:20little bit better on okay um oh that's I
- 00:10:23couldn't I can't remember the last time
- 00:10:24I did the transfer case okay or the
- 00:10:26front differential I've done it I just
- 00:10:29just can't remember when I recently did
- 00:10:31the rear I Put A A banks um diff cover
- 00:10:34and changed that okay um and I hadn't
- 00:10:36done that in a long long time that's
- 00:10:38those are things that I have neglected a
- 00:10:40little bit yeah but I mean but they
- 00:10:42still look brand new on the inside so
- 00:10:44well you said what out of your original
- 00:10:46trans so you had uh when your original
- 00:10:49motor went at 892 you also did the trans
- 00:10:52just cuz you're like I was going to save
- 00:10:53the labor yeah and it was getting tired
- 00:10:55I could feel it it wasn't slipping but
- 00:10:57you could you could just tell you know
- 00:10:59just did they do the transfer case then
- 00:11:01too when they did the trans was it trans
- 00:11:02transfer case and no just the
- 00:11:05transmission okay yeah so I mean it even
- 00:11:07though you don't know the last time you
- 00:11:08did the transfer case it's obviously not
- 00:11:10hurting it too bad if it's got 923 right
- 00:11:13and the full drive still works and hey
- 00:11:15that's all you can ask for it didn't
- 00:11:16work well a couple years ago when we
- 00:11:18when we first moved um but come to find
- 00:11:21out all the seals and the in axle seals
- 00:11:23in the front had to all be redone that
- 00:11:25was a big job yeah sorry if I'm jumping
- 00:11:27around a little bit but the wheel
- 00:11:28bearings I've done each side probably
- 00:11:31half a dozen times half a dozen okay and
- 00:11:33what do you get for mileage out of on
- 00:11:35average out of each set of I don't even
- 00:11:36know I I don't even would know how to
- 00:11:39keep I never kept track of that you
- 00:11:40don't do them at a certain mileage you
- 00:11:42just wait until they go and then you
- 00:11:44just replace yeah and and I know I sound
- 00:11:46like a broken record but and you hear
- 00:11:48things and you know like one time I went
- 00:11:50to the dealer and I was like oh yeah
- 00:11:51that the right front wheel bearing is
- 00:11:53going too okay we'll check it out we're
- 00:11:55doing the oil change yeah yeah no it's
- 00:11:56fine it's fine I said no it's going
- 00:11:59going it's it's not right it's going no
- 00:12:02no it's fine it's fine okay it's and it
- 00:12:04was a warranty part cuz that had been
- 00:12:06done within cuz Ford has a good you know
- 00:12:08two-year unlimited while mile warranty
- 00:12:10on their parts and labor right right so
- 00:12:13I leave to go get another camper and I
- 00:12:17come back I was back you know a few days
- 00:12:19later and I was
- 00:12:20like you need to replace it it's going
- 00:12:23and they brought it in they were like oh
- 00:12:25yeah yeah it's going I'm like can you
- 00:12:27just listen to Somebody That yeah it the
- 00:12:29first time yeah I'm not a I'm not a tech
- 00:12:32I'm not a mechanic but I know the sounds
- 00:12:34this is supposed to make and the ones
- 00:12:36it's not supposed to make I mean yeah if
- 00:12:37if you've driven this thing 923 you've
- 00:12:39probably spent more time around power
- 00:12:41strokes than most techs have just
- 00:12:43because you've been in it so much you
- 00:12:44know I mean that's that's a lot of time
- 00:12:47you know uh so yeah so as far I know you
- 00:12:51asked me some questions before about you
- 00:12:53know like you know things I've replaced
- 00:12:54on the truck and things on the truck
- 00:12:56I've replaced you know I'm going to take
- 00:12:58all the suspension stuff out we don't
- 00:13:00have to I mean if that's okay with you
- 00:13:02we don't need to talk about that cuz
- 00:13:03that's all been done multiple sets of
- 00:13:04shocks you know Tyrod joints ball joints
- 00:13:08you just run like the OEM yeah just the
- 00:13:10OEM shocks y I've done I've think I've
- 00:13:13only done those twice I think okay the
- 00:13:15originals and one other set okay I'm
- 00:13:19just I'm just looking at my list of like
- 00:13:20question Notes too to make sure um you
- 00:13:23know yeah okay so yeah and you said
- 00:13:25you've been through like multiple sets
- 00:13:27of like the Ty rod ends and like track
- 00:13:29bar ball joints that fun stuff yeah yeah
- 00:13:33yeah and there's you said there there's
- 00:13:34not really any Rhyme or Reason when
- 00:13:35those fail like how often how many sets
- 00:13:37of ball joints have you done I haven't I
- 00:13:39don't remember cuz some of them are
- 00:13:41warranty too like a lot of them will
- 00:13:43fail which I don't want anything to fail
- 00:13:46ever but right please fail within the
- 00:13:48two years after I do it because you know
- 00:13:51I just cuz that's easy cuz I I like to
- 00:13:54go to my dealer you know goni Ford we
- 00:13:56talked about in in B New Hampshire but I
- 00:13:58like go there but if it's a warranty
- 00:14:02item I'll just go to any Ford dealer it
- 00:14:04doesn't matter you know and right so
- 00:14:06that and I'm on the road so much I only
- 00:14:08go back
- 00:14:10East um
- 00:14:12occasionally and usually well when I
- 00:14:15need service I go back I I always plan a
- 00:14:17trip to go back and get service and but
- 00:14:20yeah I hope I don't hope if if
- 00:14:22something's going to fail I hope it
- 00:14:23happens within the waranty period so I
- 00:14:24can just get it fixed anywhere when I'm
- 00:14:26on the road no that's natural yeah what
- 00:14:28is uh what's your Wheel and Tire setup
- 00:14:31uh just the stock 20-in rims for the
- 00:14:34Platinum the tires are just stock size
- 00:14:36275 with 6520 okay um right now I have
- 00:14:41the there the Toyo HTS on like a Highway
- 00:14:45Tire um it's just nice and quiet good
- 00:14:48ride yeah and what do you get for
- 00:14:50mileage out of your tires uh 100K on
- 00:14:54average at least um usually almost same
- 00:14:56with brakes 100K for brakes and tires so
- 00:15:00how often are you rotating your tires
- 00:15:02then I I rotate them I monitor it and I
- 00:15:05rotate them so usually Tech will tell
- 00:15:09you to put your best tires in the front
- 00:15:10right okay but hauling campers all the
- 00:15:13weight's in the rear so I always have my
- 00:15:14best tires on the rear so anytime when I
- 00:15:17go get service they say do you want to
- 00:15:19rotate I say I want the best tires in
- 00:15:21the rear so if it if the best tires are
- 00:15:23already in the rear then I don't rotate
- 00:15:25but sometimes they're not so then they
- 00:15:26rotate okay interesting
- 00:15:30funky right right right interesting so
- 00:15:33so you're so if if you're getting funky
- 00:15:36wear on a rear tire then what so you
- 00:15:38move it to the front then is that kind
- 00:15:40of I just go with their recommendation
- 00:15:42yeah okay interesting oh wow and 100K
- 00:15:46out of out of tires how how did you come
- 00:15:49to decide on the Toyo HTS they're just
- 00:15:51something you tried and you yeah well I
- 00:15:54had some Michelin before and I really
- 00:15:56like the Toyo AT3
- 00:15:59the alter tires they're really nice
- 00:16:01tires and I was like oh why don't I try
- 00:16:03the their Highway Tire cuz I was using
- 00:16:05the Michelin Defender Ms I think it was
- 00:16:09called yeah yeah yeah and um M and they
- 00:16:11were nice but you know they're they're
- 00:16:13they're a lot more expensive toyos they
- 00:16:16are yeah so I tried these and I I really
- 00:16:18like them they're they're they're they
- 00:16:20seem to be really nice they're really
- 00:16:21good in the rain and they're pretty good
- 00:16:23in the snow too actually you know
- 00:16:25there's got some nice grooves in there
- 00:16:27and shs the sheds the slush and
- 00:16:29everything pretty well yeah yeah yeah
- 00:16:31nice like the I mean they're not really
- 00:16:33attractive you know so to speak you know
- 00:16:35you don't get that nice truck look but
- 00:16:37whatever yeah the Aesthetics don't pay
- 00:16:38the bills though exactly exactly that's
- 00:16:41awesome no I mean and 100K out of a set
- 00:16:44of tires isn't is incredible and uh yeah
- 00:16:48I mean they they look like they have
- 00:16:50really nice tread blocks on them so
- 00:16:52definitely can't complain there um what
- 00:16:55else like what else would you like to
- 00:16:56add on the maintenance stuff um
- 00:16:59maintenance stuff um before we well
- 00:17:02there were some people if you don't mind
- 00:17:03me just putting my own thing here there
- 00:17:06were some people on that video with Dave
- 00:17:07that were like you know full of you know
- 00:17:10what and doesn't have this many
- 00:17:12miles basically they're saying you were
- 00:17:14a bullshitter yeah basically basically
- 00:17:17yeah so some of the other things I did
- 00:17:19uh so the so my exhaust manifolds bolts
- 00:17:23broke once and the hot exhaust melted my
- 00:17:30crossover tube gasket so that had to all
- 00:17:33come apart upper end to do that um I've
- 00:17:36done the oera oil pan twice second time
- 00:17:40was under warranty yeah um I had a new
- 00:17:44rear cover the second time because a
- 00:17:47dealer I had to do the upper oil pan at
- 00:17:50not my regular dealer okay cuz it was
- 00:17:53get to the point where it's leaking
- 00:17:54really bad I mean I was going with the
- 00:17:56whole seeping thing like you know kind
- 00:17:58of my yeah so I kind of went with that
- 00:18:00for a while until it was leaving puddles
- 00:18:02and I was like I got to take care of
- 00:18:04this and so um where I took care of it
- 00:18:07when they put it back together they
- 00:18:09stripped up so there's threads in the
- 00:18:12rear cover okay and when you lock those
- 00:18:15down it locks the upper oil pan down mhm
- 00:18:18so they stri the
- 00:18:20threads oh when they did the original
- 00:18:22repair so when I it was leaking because
- 00:18:24that's where it was leaking where it
- 00:18:25wasn't tight where it wasn't to where
- 00:18:27the threads were stripped yep so when I
- 00:18:29got it so my dealer warrantied the upper
- 00:18:33oil pan but they wouldn't warranty
- 00:18:35because they didn't strip it they
- 00:18:36wouldn't warrantee their cover and of
- 00:18:38course they didn't know until they put
- 00:18:39it all back together so then they had to
- 00:18:41take it apart and recan it so it was an
- 00:18:43extra 5 hours of Labor and so anyway but
- 00:18:46the dealer that did it was they're
- 00:18:47working with me and they give me a you
- 00:18:49know they were going to send me a check
- 00:18:50and I was like why don't you just give
- 00:18:51me a credit at your dealer so right
- 00:18:52right so I got a credit I'm working off
- 00:18:54that now no that's fair but yeah so I've
- 00:18:56done that I my my original turbo and the
- 00:18:59injectors lasted to 675,000 Mi wow so I
- 00:19:04rep original turbo yeah I replaced those
- 00:19:06at that point the injectors I didn't
- 00:19:08need to replace but they were doing the
- 00:19:10turbo so I figured why not yeah freshen
- 00:19:12up a little bit so I just did that at
- 00:19:14the same time okay
- 00:19:16um you know a bunch of normal just
- 00:19:20little stuff I mean I've been through
- 00:19:21several radiators uh eight seven eight
- 00:19:24windshields yeah
- 00:19:26um uh other than than regular
- 00:19:29maintenance stuff other than that I not
- 00:19:31that I can't think of anything of brakes
- 00:19:34of course and you know brakes and rotors
- 00:19:36I I think another important maintenance
- 00:19:37item too that a lot of people Overlook
- 00:19:39is I try to do my I do a caliper service
- 00:19:42every 25 to 40,000 miles take apart the
- 00:19:45calipers Grease the pins all that stuff
- 00:19:47a lot of people forget to overlook that
- 00:19:49and just do it when they need brakes
- 00:19:52yeah I think that's why my brakes last
- 00:19:54100,000 miles is cuz I do it every 25
- 00:19:5635,000 miles my my fronts I got
- 00:20:01120 or
- 00:20:04125 out of my fronts yeah at like the
- 00:20:07rotors and I think I I had to do pads
- 00:20:09once but my brother he's a mechanic and
- 00:20:13says the same thing he he likes to do
- 00:20:14slide pin every 50,000 is what he tries
- 00:20:17to do so that's what I've been doing on
- 00:20:18mine and definitely cuz they get all
- 00:20:20stuck you know with the brake
- 00:20:21dust the the the
- 00:20:24pads yeah they're they're grabbing too
- 00:20:26much right and they'll you know so yeah
- 00:20:29yeah and the dealer recommends 25,000 so
- 00:20:31really for slide pins interesting so I
- 00:20:34try to do I do a little bit longer if I
- 00:20:37happen to be in at 25 for something else
- 00:20:39right and they have time I'll do it just
- 00:20:41do it I mean it is like a really pretty
- 00:20:43easy service to do too if my brakes are
- 00:20:46getting
- 00:20:47low not low to the point of replacing
- 00:20:49but I'm going to need to do it within a
- 00:20:51month right and I'm due for one of those
- 00:20:52Services I won't do it I'll wait until I
- 00:20:54need the brakes cuz they're going to do
- 00:20:55that when you get the brakes so right
- 00:20:57right right I'll save the cuz a that's a
- 00:20:59that's a it's you know I don't do any of
- 00:21:01my maintenance like you do so and that's
- 00:21:03a that's a costly one I mean that's $200
- 00:21:05something doll per axle yeah to do that
- 00:21:07and uh you know so not cheap no well why
- 00:21:11don't we uh change gears and uh take a
- 00:21:13look under the hood if if you're up for
- 00:21:15that all right so we talked about kind
- 00:21:19of what maintenance you've done on this
- 00:21:21thing um walk us through like what
- 00:21:25aftermarket stuff do you have in here I
- 00:21:26mean I see you still have the stock
- 00:21:28plastic intake and obviously this is the
- 00:21:30newer engine the only aftermarket thing
- 00:21:32for the previous engine was that oil
- 00:21:34filter wow which is the bet I'm telling
- 00:21:37you I know I'm going to sound like a
- 00:21:38broken record but if anybody doesn't run
- 00:21:40right out and get one of these and they
- 00:21:41want their truck to last a long time I I
- 00:21:43there's nothing I can do to help you cuz
- 00:21:45to me that is the number one thing why
- 00:21:48this truck lasted that long other than
- 00:21:51you know me driving with a level head
- 00:21:53right um you know I don't drive it like
- 00:21:55a RAC truck
- 00:21:56um this obviously was also aftermarket
- 00:22:00for the life of the truck SBB cold side
- 00:22:03yeah yep okay so but now so with the new
- 00:22:06engine I've added the bigger dgas tanks
- 00:22:08from
- 00:22:08mishimoto uh mishimoto radiator and um
- 00:22:13my newest favorite edition is the
- 00:22:16mishimoto transmission cooler that thing
- 00:22:18is the cat's ass is so it's the pan
- 00:22:21right it's a deeper pan or do you
- 00:22:22actually get cooler right here oh wow
- 00:22:25goes right across the front and so in
- 00:22:27front of the stock radiator my
- 00:22:28transmission runs 50° to cooler wow it
- 00:22:31did my and my cool my coolant
- 00:22:34is 20 10
- 00:22:38uh it runs about 190 okay um and when
- 00:22:41I'm towing it maybe 192 193 and with my
- 00:22:44old engine before it before the lifters
- 00:22:47failed it was my trans my oil was at
- 00:22:51245 wow my transmission was at 225 and
- 00:22:55same with my coolant was 225 wow and now
- 00:22:58my coolant running in the low 190s my
- 00:23:00oil when I'm not Towing is in the low
- 00:23:03190s and my uh what was the other one
- 00:23:06transmission oh yeah transmission when
- 00:23:08I'm not Towing is 140 wow and it was you
- 00:23:11know in the yep 200 when I wasn't Towing
- 00:23:13okay so those numbers I gave you before
- 00:23:15were Towing so when I wasn't Towing my
- 00:23:17coolant was 196 my oil was 200 198 okay
- 00:23:23and uh my transmission was you know 195
- 00:23:26190 so you know somewhere close to where
- 00:23:28the coent was okay um wow they were all
- 00:23:31close to each other when I wasn't Towing
- 00:23:34right um but this stuff makes a big deal
- 00:23:38the the mishimoto dgas tanks and the
- 00:23:41radiator just those I think it's um was
- 00:23:45three gallons maybe extra coolant okay
- 00:23:48so you're running a lot of extra coolant
- 00:23:50a lot of coolant and the radiator is so
- 00:23:52there's so much more I think it's like
- 00:23:5334 or 37% more surface area on the
- 00:23:56radiator wow than the stock Ford
- 00:23:59um and it's got a lifetime warranty will
- 00:24:02which I will be utilizing cuz you can't
- 00:24:04see it on the camera but I'm standing on
- 00:24:05a cardboard piece of cardboard right now
- 00:24:07cuz I'm leaking some coolant in uh Harry
- 00:24:09oh in Harry's Harry's driveway so yeah
- 00:24:12yeah um but they're sending me one next
- 00:24:13week and um I'll get that put in and
- 00:24:17nice be on my Merry way but yeah no so
- 00:24:19that's so you got the the mishimoto
- 00:24:22stuff the trans cooler radiator the de
- 00:24:25gas tanks and the intake and that's it
- 00:24:28for now for now right for oh in the um
- 00:24:31you know the banks diff cover that was a
- 00:24:34recent thing too so right right right
- 00:24:36but then you know once once I can I'm
- 00:24:39going to do The Pusher intake and I'm
- 00:24:41probably going to do all The Pusher
- 00:24:44piping
- 00:24:45[Music]
- 00:24:46um yeah I mean Derek you've like I mean
- 00:24:51this this truck especially on the
- 00:24:54outside when you pulled and I was blown
- 00:24:55away by how you know clean it looks like
- 00:24:58it doesn't look bad at all I know it's
- 00:25:00you know it's highway miles but still
- 00:25:02you know you're you're towing you're
- 00:25:03running a lot of miles you're running
- 00:25:06hard um it's it's really awesome just to
- 00:25:10see how how well taken care of this
- 00:25:12thing is yeah I I thank you I I
- 00:25:14appreciate that I I I I don't want
- 00:25:18to hurry things up but I can't wait till
- 00:25:22summer um not for the reason most people
- 00:25:25think but I want to tow you know like
- 00:25:27Towing across the Nebraska or up I25
- 00:25:30into Wyoming um you know with my old
- 00:25:33engine in that when sometimes it's 100°
- 00:25:35and going up those Hills I would be
- 00:25:38doing 30 and an 80 right you know and uh
- 00:25:42I want to see how all this stuff the new
- 00:25:44coolant performs transmission performs
- 00:25:47in the heat so you touched on it briefly
- 00:25:50there and a little bit earlier when we
- 00:25:52were talking but driving habits M what
- 00:25:56you even just mentioned like you slow
- 00:25:57down you you were slowing down when it
- 00:25:59got too hot to like 30 going up hills
- 00:26:02what uh what what are your driving
- 00:26:04Habits Like with these trucks when
- 00:26:06you're towing well I when I'm towing I
- 00:26:09use I'm a big cruise control guy okay so
- 00:26:11I set it on cruise um this of course is
- 00:26:14a little fancier of a truck so you know
- 00:26:17I have the radar the radar and the
- 00:26:18cruise control so I set it at
- 00:26:2165 when I'm towing and go um okay if
- 00:26:24there's a steep hill I will I will
- 00:26:26manually downshift to f GE okay cuz I
- 00:26:29don't want it to you know when you slam
- 00:26:32that when it slams right down when it
- 00:26:34when it shifts down um the
- 00:26:38uh I I don't shift it down and I don't
- 00:26:41want it to shift down after I've dropped
- 00:26:44off my the speed I have it set at okay
- 00:26:47so when I know a Hill's coming up I'll
- 00:26:48shift it down while I'm still at speed
- 00:26:51cuz then it's not it doesn't it doesn't
- 00:26:52hit like a hammer downar yeah it doesn't
- 00:26:54hit like a hammer and um it just kind of
- 00:26:57just just a little quick little shift
- 00:26:59yeah but when I'm if I'm set at 65 and
- 00:27:01I'm doing 58 and then I downshift it
- 00:27:03manually it's like Wham you know and it
- 00:27:05really you know it shifts really hard on
- 00:27:07the yeah so I do that to try to save
- 00:27:10things um going through Hills like
- 00:27:12Towing back East towards Vermont um or
- 00:27:15in through Vermont there's a lot of
- 00:27:16steep hills there and I'll you know it's
- 00:27:1850 mph speed limit with some curves but
- 00:27:20I'll just I'll do 35 up those Hills okay
- 00:27:23you know not not because the truck's
- 00:27:25Limited at that cuz I want to save it
- 00:27:28I'm getting a little wiser in my old age
- 00:27:29so I figure you know let's make it you
- 00:27:32know it was $37,000 to do this with the
- 00:27:34transmission and the Mishi Moto stuff
- 00:27:37and so it's you know I don't want to do
- 00:27:40that again anytime soon no no yeah I
- 00:27:42don't blame you that's a lot that's a
- 00:27:44lot to I'll do when I'll sudden to build
- 00:27:45a hairy yeah thanks
- 00:27:48bud yeah uh well what uh I guess just to
- 00:27:53like wrap like what advice would you
- 00:27:55give someone who wants to put lot of
- 00:27:58miles on a vehicle honestly I know I'm
- 00:28:01sounding like a bit of an infomercial
- 00:28:03but bypass oil filter would be number
- 00:28:06one yeah number one and I encourage you
- 00:28:09to research about it the insane diesel
- 00:28:12bypass filter I researched them when I
- 00:28:14was trying to figure out and from all
- 00:28:16the other ones out there I mean it
- 00:28:17filters down to one micron which is 10
- 00:28:19times smaller than a strain of hair yeah
- 00:28:2210 times there's other ones out there
- 00:28:24now that filter to two or three microns
- 00:28:26which is good that's not bad
- 00:28:28but why would you want not bad why
- 00:28:30wouldn't you want fantastic fantastic
- 00:28:32yeah you know so that's the number one
- 00:28:35thing and then never neglect all your
- 00:28:36other filters and changing your fluids
- 00:28:39that's the biggest thing other than your
- 00:28:41driving habits you know don't don't
- 00:28:42drive it like a race car right um and I
- 00:28:45would highly anybody who buys a diesel
- 00:28:47well nowadays anybody who buys a diesel
- 00:28:49I hope they they're not I mean people
- 00:28:52are going to do what they're going to do
- 00:28:53but like if I wasn't doing what I'm
- 00:28:55doing I wouldn't have a diesel truck
- 00:28:57right you know it's what an extra
- 00:28:59$220,000 and all this extra maintenance
- 00:29:01right but there's people that I know
- 00:29:03that buy these trucks that get rid of
- 00:29:04them every two years three years I'm
- 00:29:05like I don't understand that why yeah I
- 00:29:08don't understand that but hopefully
- 00:29:09people that watch your channel for the
- 00:29:11maintenance aspect of all this stuff
- 00:29:13they they know that you know you're
- 00:29:15making this investment you want it to
- 00:29:17last and last and last like right I you
- 00:29:19know I'm I'm going to run this truck
- 00:29:21until it's until you know if I have
- 00:29:24holes in the floor you know I'm stopping
- 00:29:26like Fred Flintstone you know I'm going
- 00:29:27to into the ground I'm going now I'm
- 00:29:30going for 2 million miles that's my
- 00:29:32that's my next uh 2 million miles
- 00:29:35without change in the motor I'm hoping
- 00:29:37you know you know I'd love to get to
- 00:29:39that yeah um no that's awesome well
- 00:29:41there's something else you said to me
- 00:29:42too I think when we were talking like on
- 00:29:44the phone a while ago um where you felt
- 00:29:47like too if like people if you're going
- 00:29:49to buy a diesel you got to run it yes
- 00:29:52like if it's going to sit that's you
- 00:29:54know missions or no like if it's if it's
- 00:29:57if it's sitting it's bad for it yep no
- 00:29:59these things want to be they want to be
- 00:30:01run so I quick little story my first
- 00:30:04diesel truck was a 20036 l F450 okay and
- 00:30:08I used it to plow with and I used it to
- 00:30:10haul landscape supplies when the as we
- 00:30:12talked about before when the landscape
- 00:30:15supply hauling job kind of went by the
- 00:30:18wayside I that truck would sit in the
- 00:30:22summer M and then I would use in the
- 00:30:24winter but I had to do tons of repairs
- 00:30:26all the time right mainly in the fall or
- 00:30:30you know and I've come to realize since
- 00:30:32I've owned some f that truck and some
- 00:30:35others and the this truck
- 00:30:38and if I keep using it it's fine I mean
- 00:30:41this normal maintenance stuff of course
- 00:30:43right but it wants to be used every day
- 00:30:46it doesn't want like it doesn't want to
- 00:30:47be you know you know I'm going to get
- 00:30:49out start it drive to work three miles
- 00:30:51away and then come home and park it
- 00:30:54there not going to want 15 20 30 50
- 00:30:56miles a week right you know it wants to
- 00:30:59go it wants to go and I I really think
- 00:31:02that thanks for reminding me about that
- 00:31:04that's a huge that's another huge thing
- 00:31:07the oil
- 00:31:08filtration uh the oil analysis I mean uh
- 00:31:12the the good fuel and fuel additives um
- 00:31:16uh driving and driving go go go and Lord
- 00:31:19knows I do that yeah um no you do plenty
- 00:31:22of that I mean and I completely agree I
- 00:31:25think that like actually driving your
- 00:31:27vehicle and honestly feel like it's like
- 00:31:29even outside of diesels too like gas
- 00:31:32like combustion engines they want to get
- 00:31:34up to temperature and be run there and
- 00:31:36the longer you keep them there the
- 00:31:38better it is I mean I you know my truck
- 00:31:41I found when I was hauling running you
- 00:31:43know 4,000 miles a week the thing was
- 00:31:46happy as a clam like it loved it and it
- 00:31:49just just wants to go it just wants to
- 00:31:51run so yeah you do the maintenance it's
- 00:31:53like they'll go you've seen that but 2
- 00:31:57million miles would be that would be
- 00:31:59remarkable out of one of these things
- 00:32:01here's another good thing too that so
- 00:32:03Lake speed and Dave's just did uh some
- 00:32:06testing on some oil did some oil testing
- 00:32:10on the start and go Theory like Dave's
- 00:32:15been pushing not to idle your truck you
- 00:32:18start it and go right and everybody all
- 00:32:22all all everything conventional tells no
- 00:32:25let it warm up for a few minutes and
- 00:32:26then go right so the I'm I'm not
- 00:32:29breaking any news here because it was on
- 00:32:30Instagram but 42% more efficient the oil
- 00:32:34is 42% better by starting and just going
- 00:32:38than letting it idle interesting yeah
- 00:32:40there's way more fuel delusion and what
- 00:32:43are your thoughts though on like cuz I
- 00:32:44know Ford says like if it's below zero
- 00:32:48specifically they're like you should at
- 00:32:49least idle for a few minutes cuz that's
- 00:32:53I I think maybe that was what was missed
- 00:32:54in that video was like obviously like
- 00:32:57you know when I was hauling too like I'd
- 00:32:59start the truck and pretty much St and
- 00:33:01go but like if it was cold and it went
- 00:33:03to high idle I would always wait until
- 00:33:05the RPMs like smoothed out you know like
- 00:33:07I'd give it like 5 minutes and then go I
- 00:33:09don't know cuz I mean that's the like
- 00:33:11listening to that stuff it's the first
- 00:33:14I've heard of that right like the whole
- 00:33:16you should just start it up and like
- 00:33:17immediately cuz I've never done that no
- 00:33:19I haven't either I did it today just cuz
- 00:33:22I found you know I was talking about it
- 00:33:23with somebody yesterday yeah and um I
- 00:33:25was like oh let's try it and it was you
- 00:33:26know 5° in Utah when I was there this
- 00:33:28morning you just fired it up and yeah
- 00:33:31and uh I was uh I just fired it up and I
- 00:33:34just got my stuff together in the truck
- 00:33:35you know maybe 2 minutes okay 3 minutes
- 00:33:38and but you let it but you let it at
- 00:33:39least sit for like a few minutes too I
- 00:33:41mean I don't know I guess that's uh it
- 00:33:43wasn't purposeful it was just getting
- 00:33:46situated right right no and I feel like
- 00:33:48that's fun I I I personally think I like
- 00:33:51to give my truck a couple minutes while
- 00:33:53I'm getting situated but like I'm not
- 00:33:55letting it sit for 10 or 15 you know
- 00:33:57what I mean even when it's cold like it
- 00:33:58was
- 00:34:00-5 here a few weeks ago and you know I
- 00:34:04started up but definitely no more than
- 00:34:0710 I don't know it's always plug it in
- 00:34:09too plug it in I always plug it in if
- 00:34:12it's be if I'm let me qualify that if
- 00:34:15I'm somewhere where I have an outlet
- 00:34:17okay I will always plug it in unless
- 00:34:19it's in a garage okay always even if
- 00:34:22it's okay in the summer of course I
- 00:34:23don't but the fall and winter early
- 00:34:26spring yeah late winter early spring
- 00:34:28always plug it in if it's like below 40
- 00:34:31okay and I think that helps a lot too
- 00:34:33the oil just gets moving through there a
- 00:34:34little quicker start up yeah yeah it's
- 00:34:36already a little bit little bit warmer
- 00:34:38yeah okay well that's good to know yeah
- 00:34:41that and uh a couple other things I
- 00:34:42forgot real quick yeah yeah it had the
- 00:34:44original starter on it too um wow and so
- 00:34:48but I when I did the redid the upper oil
- 00:34:51pan like we talked about so that was you
- 00:34:53know almost 800,000 miles right maybe a
- 00:34:56little over 800 when I redid that so
- 00:34:58that had the original starter until then
- 00:35:00so I didn't know if that was important
- 00:35:02for people cuz that's a pretty big wear
- 00:35:03at no that's a starter is definitely a
- 00:35:04wear ATM what about like your alternator
- 00:35:06alternator um one went a few years ago
- 00:35:09and I just had him replace both okay so
- 00:35:12so the Dual alternator set up on yours
- 00:35:14yeah but those those are not original
- 00:35:16but they so you've done three
- 00:35:18alternators total in uh no just
- 00:35:22two oh okay got cuz they were original
- 00:35:26one went oh and then they
- 00:35:28I replaced them both both at the same
- 00:35:30time okay because they had all the stuff
- 00:35:32out so that's so it was really no labor
- 00:35:34just a just so I was like might as well
- 00:35:37well we're in there instead of that one
- 00:35:39going the next week and then have all
- 00:35:40that labor to take everything out again
- 00:35:42right you know that's another thing I
- 00:35:43try to do is try to maximize yeah try to
- 00:35:47maximize
- 00:35:48like Bob my service adviser at groni
- 00:35:52he'll he knows now I don't even have to
- 00:35:54say it anymore if they're doing
- 00:35:55something is like oh we're taking this
- 00:35:57this and this off you might want to
- 00:35:58consider changing this cuz he knows I'm
- 00:36:00going to ask that when he says right I'm
- 00:36:02doing this and I'm going to say well
- 00:36:04what else are you taking off what can we
- 00:36:05get at right and then while you're in
- 00:36:07there yes because because he'll tell me
- 00:36:10that okay if we don't do it this will be
- 00:36:13a 5our job right but all the Labor's
- 00:36:16done so if we do it it's just the price
- 00:36:18of the park right so you know mean to me
- 00:36:21that's just makes complete common sense
- 00:36:24to to do that what about power steering
- 00:36:27like never done anything with it have
- 00:36:29you ever placed the fluid or just no wow
- 00:36:34that's crazy so the original power
- 00:36:36steering pump and steering wreck yeah
- 00:36:38that's the only thing that they changed
- 00:36:40on the power steering once was what
- 00:36:42there's a I don't know what the I
- 00:36:43apologize for not knowing but there's a
- 00:36:46piece on the steering column that they
- 00:36:49adjust sometimes when they do the
- 00:36:51alignment okay there's a piece for the
- 00:36:53inside here somewhere yeah yeah inside
- 00:36:54the steering box that part's been
- 00:36:56replaced okay but the fluid no um to be
- 00:37:00honest the brake fluid I don't even know
- 00:37:02if that's been replaced if they do that
- 00:37:03when they do brakes then yes it has if
- 00:37:04they don't then no it hasn't but it's
- 00:37:06never leaked um I did transmission lines
- 00:37:10when I did the transmission didn't have
- 00:37:11to they were fine but I was like might
- 00:37:13as well got twoyear warranty so and
- 00:37:16they're in there and it wasn't it was no
- 00:37:18extra labor cuz they were all coming out
- 00:37:19anyway right cuz all this stuff was
- 00:37:21coming out and same with the the
- 00:37:23secondary so I wanted to replace the
- 00:37:26radiator because I wanted it to run
- 00:37:27cooler right and I said why don't we
- 00:37:29just do the
- 00:37:30secondary and the condenser as well well
- 00:37:34cuz it's all coming out so it's just the
- 00:37:35price of the par to put it back in and
- 00:37:37they'll be fresh everything would be
- 00:37:38fresh and it can run as cool as possible
- 00:37:40and right you know good to go yeah but
- 00:37:45serpentine belt do you place that
- 00:37:47regularly or not regularly when they
- 00:37:49tell me it needs it and I think I've
- 00:37:51only done it once maybe twice twice in
- 00:37:55900 and I did the um I did the oil the
- 00:37:59water pump I did last year sometime so
- 00:38:04that was still good right but they when
- 00:38:07they replaced the the engine I put a new
- 00:38:10one of those on okay I think I no I
- 00:38:13think it came with one okay it came with
- 00:38:15one so I took my one that was fairly new
- 00:38:19yeah and so I have that in my garage so
- 00:38:21if this one goes I have a canace it's
- 00:38:23only got I say only because it has so
- 00:38:25many miles I'll say it's only got 70,000
