  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

The video discusses the significance of 'impact' for designers, especially in the context of business. It highlights that impact often refers to the contribution of design work to business metrics like sales and conversion rates. The speaker emphasizes the necessity of understanding and communicating the business impact of one's design projects, particularly during interviews and in portfolios. For those who lack business impact examples, the speaker encourages looking for 'design impact,' which encompasses improvements in team processes, design culture, and internal documentation, thus providing a means to express one's contributions even without shipped work.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:13:44

Further, the video outlines various examples of design impact based on the speaker's personal experience, such as creating design documentation, organizing workshops to improve team skills, and enhancing team culture through events and newsletters. The speaker emphasizes the value of communicating these contributions, which can help designers establish their worth and improve their professional visibility—even if they don't yet have business impact metrics to share. as a designer you might have heard a lot
  • 00:00:02
about the importance of impact and if
  • 00:00:05
you hear that word and you think oh my
  • 00:00:08
gosh what impact my project doesn't have
  • 00:00:10
any impact or how do i communicate
  • 00:00:13
impact when i don't have any work that
  • 00:00:15
has shipped or maybe i only have school
  • 00:00:18
projects well don't worry in this video
  • 00:00:20
today i'm going to give you some
  • 00:00:21
pointers on what impact is and some
  • 00:00:23
    alternative different kinds of impact
  • 00:00:25
you can talk about in your project if
  • 00:00:27
you don't have any business impact or
  • 00:00:30
your projects haven't shipped so we're
  • 00:00:32
going to start by talking about what
  • 00:00:33
impact is why it is important what to do
  • 00:00:36
if you don't have business impact and
  • 00:00:38
then at the end i'm also going to run
  • 00:00:40
you through my own presentation where i
  • 00:00:43
talk about impact i've had from a design
  • 00:00:46
    perspective so not necessarily business
  • 00:00:48
impact but other ways i've contributed
  • 00:00:50
    to impact as a designer
  • 00:00:57
all right so what is impact well impact
  • 00:01:00
is the most commonly talked about in the
  • 00:01:02
context of business impact and this
  • 00:01:05
often refers to how did your project
  • 00:01:07
contribute towards any increase or lift
  • 00:01:10
in business metrics you might be asked
  • 00:01:12
in an interview or expected to talk
  • 00:01:14
about in a case study how your project
  • 00:01:16
led to or resulted in business impact so
  • 00:01:20
this could be in context to any business
  • 00:01:23
metrics you may also be expected to
  • 00:01:25
reflect on the goals that you set at the
  • 00:01:27
beginning of a project and what kind of
  • 00:01:29
impact your project had in the context
  • 00:01:31
of those goals did you meet them did you
  • 00:01:34
overachieve them under achieve them what
  • 00:01:36
was the impact of the project i really
  • 00:01:38
like this quote from precious matabuki
  • 00:01:41
who wrote in a medium article for us
  • 00:01:43
designers to stay relevant and still
  • 00:01:45
have a seat at the table we must be
  • 00:01:48
aware of how we impact business and i
  • 00:01:50
think that sums it up really well
  • 00:01:52
because if you can't draw the
  • 00:01:54
    correlation between
  • 00:01:55
your efforts and design to how it is
  • 00:01:58
impacting the business at the bottom
  • 00:01:59
line or at the end of the day then
  • 00:02:01
ultimately how can we expect people to
  • 00:02:03
value design for what it is it is always
  • 00:02:06
worth having some awareness over the
  • 00:02:08
business impact of your project and if
  • 00:02:11
you are working at a company or in a
  • 00:02:13
team if you have some work that has
  • 00:02:14
shipped and you aren't aware of what the
  • 00:02:16
    business impact is
  • 00:02:18
go and talk to your product manager or
  • 00:02:20
go and talk to your data scientist they
  • 00:02:22
are bound to have some of this business
  • 00:02:24
impact already in their back pocket and
  • 00:02:26
so it could just be a conversation to be
  • 00:02:28
had i've mentioned a few times on this
  • 00:02:30
channel as well about how i always make
  • 00:02:32
sure to include business impact whenever
  • 00:02:34
i'm talking about my work so that could
  • 00:02:36
be in the context of a portfolio
  • 00:02:38
presentation it could be in a interview
  • 00:02:41
a design job interview it could be at
  • 00:02:44
the end of a case study so always be
  • 00:02:46
prepared to talk about it the actual
  • 00:02:48
    metric that communicates the business
  • 00:02:50
impact of your project is going to
  • 00:02:52
differ depending on the company you're
  • 00:02:54
at or the goal of the project some
  • 00:02:56
examples of business impact might be
  • 00:02:58
    things like
  • 00:03:00
increase in sales or conversion rate or
  • 00:03:03
orders or it could also be things like
  • 00:03:06
    decrease in
  • 00:03:08
drop off or a decrease in abandoned cart
  • 00:03:10
    or decrease in
  • 00:03:12
    account cancellations again make sure
  • 00:03:15
you know what the goal of the project
  • 00:03:16
was and if you don't know what that is
  • 00:03:18
talk to your team and establish a goal
  • 00:03:20
up front and talk about how you're going
  • 00:03:22
to measure success so why is this
  • 00:03:25
important well not only will you
  • 00:03:27
probably be expected to know this and
  • 00:03:29
talk about this in interviews and case
  • 00:03:31
studies and things like that but impact
  • 00:03:34
also shows the value of design it can
  • 00:03:36
also hint to people your design skills
  • 00:03:38
and capabilities as you provide more
  • 00:03:41
business impact you're probably going to
  • 00:03:44
    get given more and exciting
  • 00:03:46
    opportunities and higher
  • 00:03:47
    responsibilities impact also signals to
  • 00:03:49
people the kind of return on investment
  • 00:03:51
they can expect from design and this can
  • 00:03:54
be really valuable for maybe you're
  • 00:03:57
applying it somewhere that you might be
  • 00:03:59
the first designer maybe they don't have
  • 00:04:01
design yet it could be a really early
  • 00:04:03
stage startup if you can show the impact
  • 00:04:06
    that design can have
  • 00:04:07
they are going to be super impressed by
  • 00:04:10
that and probably more likely to hire
  • 00:04:12
you if you can show exact examples of
  • 00:04:14
how you have provided impact to a team
  • 00:04:17
or a company the more closely you can
  • 00:04:20
tie your design decisions your design
  • 00:04:22
    input your contribution towards a
  • 00:04:24
project to the business impact or the
  • 00:04:27
impact of that project the more
  • 00:04:29
perceived value you can bring to a team
  • 00:04:31
okay so what if you don't have business
  • 00:04:33
impact maybe you're still studying you
  • 00:04:35
don't have a finished project or you
  • 00:04:37
don't have work that is shipped or maybe
  • 00:04:39
you just don't have access to this kind
  • 00:04:40
of information i think there's other
  • 00:04:42
types of impacts that are equally as
  • 00:04:44
valuable and important that you can talk
  • 00:04:46
about and share and i like to call that
  • 00:04:48
design impact design impact can include
  • 00:04:51
a number of things in my experience some
  • 00:04:53
examples of things that i correlate to
  • 00:04:55
    design impact are things like
  • 00:04:57
    improvements to design documentation
  • 00:05:00
influence on team culture and processes
  • 00:05:03
is there something you can point to that
  • 00:05:05
you did or you learned in this project
  • 00:05:07
that ultimately led to design impact
  • 00:05:10
maybe for example when you started the
  • 00:05:12
project there was no design system but
  • 00:05:14
throughout the project you realized hey
  • 00:05:16
we really need a design system for this
  • 00:05:18
and then maybe you went out and built
  • 00:05:20
one that is a great example of design
  • 00:05:22
impact you've realized a problem or an
  • 00:05:24
area of opportunity and you've taken the
  • 00:05:26
initiative to improve that not only for
  • 00:05:28
yourself but for the whole design team
  • 00:05:31
another example is maybe you think the
  • 00:05:33
design handoff process that you have in
  • 00:05:35
your team is inefficient and it's not
  • 00:05:37
    working very well
  • 00:05:39
maybe you then end up collaborating with
  • 00:05:40
an engineer and figuring out how to
  • 00:05:42
streamline that process and how to
  • 00:05:44
improve it for the rest of the team are
  • 00:05:46
there moments like that where throughout
  • 00:05:47
a project you've seen that opportunity
  • 00:05:49
you've made an improvement and it's
  • 00:05:51
turned out to be really impactful for
  • 00:05:53
the rest of the team i have a few
  • 00:05:55
examples of these myself that i want to
  • 00:05:57
    share with you now
  • 00:05:59
all right here we are in figma and i'm
  • 00:06:01
going to walk you through a presentation
  • 00:06:03
that i've put together and previously
  • 00:06:05
presented in job interviews all about
  • 00:06:08
the impact i've had in relation to
  • 00:06:10
design and i called this presentation
  • 00:06:13
building a ux practice because i wanted
  • 00:06:16
to share some of the stories about
  • 00:06:18
things that i've done and impact that
  • 00:06:20
i've contributed to in relation to
  • 00:06:23
building a ux practice and craft at a
  • 00:06:25
company so here we go let's do it the
  • 00:06:28
    first section is around design
  • 00:06:30
excellence in the context of in internal
  • 00:06:33
setting so within a design team first
  • 00:06:35
example i have here is design
  • 00:06:37
documentation and here i talk a little
  • 00:06:40
bit about how i built internal sites to
  • 00:06:42
act kind of as a source of truth to
  • 00:06:44
document the design process any updates
  • 00:06:47
in relation to the design and project
  • 00:06:49
and also the decisions made throughout a
  • 00:06:51
project so here on the right is a visual
  • 00:06:53
example of an internal website that i
  • 00:06:55
created for a project that i was working
  • 00:06:57
on around lending so this is one example
  • 00:06:59
of how you can contribute towards impact
  • 00:07:02
in your team maybe you see opportunities
  • 00:07:04
to sort of level up their design
  • 00:07:06
    documentation and how you
  • 00:07:08
capture all of the design decisions made
  • 00:07:10
or how you manage a source of truth in
  • 00:07:12
relation to a design project next is a
  • 00:07:15
workshop that i created and put together
  • 00:07:17
around figma for engineers so i saw that
  • 00:07:20
a lot of the engineers that i was
  • 00:07:21
working with at uber were not really
  • 00:07:23
savvy with how to use figma they hadn't
  • 00:07:25
    had any
  • 00:07:26
training on how to use figma and so that
  • 00:07:29
resulted in me having to be really
  • 00:07:31
meticulous in my design handoff which
  • 00:07:34
was really time consuming and really
  • 00:07:35
frustrating so i thought okay what if i
  • 00:07:37
can just better train our engineers on
  • 00:07:39
how to use figma so i don't have to do
  • 00:07:42
all of the red lighting for handoff so
  • 00:07:44
this was sort of an internal side
  • 00:07:45
project i did and put together and it
  • 00:07:48
was sort of a whole presentation
  • 00:07:49
workshop to help educate our engineers
  • 00:07:52
and inform them on how to use figma so
  • 00:07:54
the impact of this is that ultimately it
  • 00:07:55
led to improving the design to
  • 00:07:57
engineering handoff the next one is
  • 00:07:59
    around team process so
  • 00:08:01
i consulted a lot with design leadership
  • 00:08:04
on how we can improve our design
  • 00:08:05
    practice giving feedback and suggestions
  • 00:08:08
on how to write our critiques or design
  • 00:08:10
reviews and all those kind of process
  • 00:08:12
things around the design team that
  • 00:08:14
ultimately i think helped improve a lot
  • 00:08:16
of team culture and relationships that i
  • 00:08:18
had with other people so i frequently
  • 00:08:20
worked with our design operations folks
  • 00:08:23
    to
  • 00:08:24
improve processes and practices on the
  • 00:08:26
team so one for example was around
  • 00:08:28
    collaborating with engineers and bug
  • 00:08:30
bashers and design handoff kind of
  • 00:08:32
related to the two examples prior but i
  • 00:08:35
wanted to highlight this because i feel
  • 00:08:36
like i played a really active role in
  • 00:08:39
    contributing towards what's the culture
  • 00:08:41
we wanted on our design team all right
  • 00:08:44
that kind of leads into the next section
  • 00:08:46
really nicely which is on design culture
  • 00:08:49
and so one of the things i was really
  • 00:08:51
heavily involved with during my time in
  • 00:08:54
amsterdam was the uber design nights and
  • 00:08:56
so i kind of helped organize and run
  • 00:09:00
these big design art events we'd have
  • 00:09:01
200 plus attendees per event which was
  • 00:09:04
kind of crazy and we had a lot of guest
  • 00:09:06
speakers we would collaborate with you
  • 00:09:08
know other companies that wanted to come
  • 00:09:10
and speak at our event and so i was kind
  • 00:09:14
of running these on top of my full-time
  • 00:09:17
job we did like one a quarter i think so
  • 00:09:20
pretty regularly and i wanted to
  • 00:09:22
highlight this because i think this was
  • 00:09:23
really impactful for the amsterdam team
  • 00:09:25
we got a lot more people interested in
  • 00:09:27
working on our team in amsterdam we got
  • 00:09:29
kind of a bit of a reputation and a name
  • 00:09:32
    within the local amsterdam design
  • 00:09:34
community so i felt like this was really
  • 00:09:36
important to highlight the next is
  • 00:09:37
    around team newsletters so
  • 00:09:40
    i
  • 00:09:40
initiated created and sort of curated
  • 00:09:43
    the amsterdam studio newsletter which
  • 00:09:46
was sort of an internal design
  • 00:09:48
newsletter we sent out once a month to
  • 00:09:50
the wider design team and our amsterdam
  • 00:09:52
counterparts they kind of had an update
  • 00:09:54
about the design team some of the
  • 00:09:55
projects we're working on any people
  • 00:09:57
updates resources things like that and i
  • 00:10:00
kind of continued doing this on the
  • 00:10:02
ubereads team where i ran and curated
  • 00:10:04
the design index and that got sent out
  • 00:10:08
to again i think like the whole design
  • 00:10:10
org and the whole ubereats org we did
  • 00:10:12
that more like every six weeks like
  • 00:10:13
    everybody contributed towards giving
  • 00:10:15
updates on their projects and the status
  • 00:10:17
of their work so yeah did a lot of like
  • 00:10:19
    running internal newsletters um which
  • 00:10:22
was really fun uh also sometimes really
  • 00:10:25
challenging because you'd have to like
  • 00:10:26
chase people up and follow up with
  • 00:10:27
people um but i think this was also a
  • 00:10:30
really good example of design impact
  • 00:10:31
because it was about you know showing
  • 00:10:34
the work that we're doing as a team to
  • 00:10:35
others within the organization next is
  • 00:10:38
toronto events so when i eventually
  • 00:10:39
    relocated to toronto
  • 00:10:41
i didn't do design nights anymore in
  • 00:10:43
toronto amsterdam kind of continued that
  • 00:10:45
tradition but one thing i did do was
  • 00:10:48
co-organize jam days with an engineer
  • 00:10:50
friend of mine it was kind of like a
  • 00:10:52
like hackathon but we wanted to call it
  • 00:10:54
jam days to kind of be more inclusive
  • 00:10:56
and another thing i ran was book club so
  • 00:10:59
these are kind of two different events
  • 00:11:00
that i was running for the toronto tech
  • 00:11:03
team um that were kind of like happening
  • 00:11:06
every six to eight weeks or so and again
  • 00:11:08
just wanted to show that i had this
  • 00:11:10
    initiative to
  • 00:11:12
run and organize and create these events
  • 00:11:15
as like sort of a cultural initiative
  • 00:11:17
for the team next around design culture
  • 00:11:19
is design social so i ran the uber
  • 00:11:22
design twitter account during my entire
  • 00:11:24
    tenure at uber
  • 00:11:26
    very secretly and stealthily nobody
  • 00:11:27
really knew outside of uber that it was
  • 00:11:30
me behind the account but that was
  • 00:11:31
really really fun i also contributed to
  • 00:11:33
our medium to our dribble account and a
  • 00:11:35
bit to our instagram as well so just
  • 00:11:38
showing the contributions that i was
  • 00:11:40
sort of providing towards the social
  • 00:11:42
aspect of the design culture and team at
  • 00:11:44
    uber
  • 00:11:45
all right team branding so i wasn't the
  • 00:11:48
    designer behind these beautiful logos
  • 00:11:50
you see on the right but i did help
  • 00:11:52
consult and initiate so for example for
  • 00:11:54
the design nights we were doing we
  • 00:11:56
wanted some stickers so that was kind of
  • 00:11:58
part of the design nights and then also
  • 00:11:59
    some of the
  • 00:12:00
public events that we did in toronto and
  • 00:12:03
so you know i just helped kind of
  • 00:12:04
    consult and sort of help
  • 00:12:06
    contribute towards what our branding
  • 00:12:09
    would be as a team
  • 00:12:11
all right and the last section is on
  • 00:12:12
external stuff so giving back to the
  • 00:12:15
public or wider design community and the
  • 00:12:18
following projects i'm going to share
  • 00:12:19
are probably not new to you because
  • 00:12:21
you're watching me on youtube you know
  • 00:12:23
that i teach product design and research
  • 00:12:25
on youtube so i highlight that as well
  • 00:12:28
because i think that is really really
  • 00:12:29
impactful some of these numbers are
  • 00:12:31
outdated but that is fine i also have a
  • 00:12:33
podcast all about design that i do with
  • 00:12:35
    charlie
  • 00:12:37
i also provide mentoring over on super
  • 00:12:39
    pair so helping people one-on-one
  • 00:12:41
advance in their design careers or work
  • 00:12:43
    through challenges that they're having
  • 00:12:44
with regards to their design career
  • 00:12:47
and then also a lot of public speaking
  • 00:12:48
    i've given workshops i've spoken
  • 00:12:50
publicly at conferences at the uber
  • 00:12:52
design nights for example also now
  • 00:12:55
remotely at a lot of conferences so
  • 00:12:57
that's another aspect i wanted to
  • 00:12:59
highlight okay i hope that was helpful
  • 00:13:01
for you to see and that this provided
  • 00:13:03
you with some inspiration on how to talk
  • 00:13:05
about impact from a perspective of
  • 00:13:06
    design impact and not necessarily
  • 00:13:09
business impact of course if you do have
  • 00:13:11
business impact that you can talk about
  • 00:13:12
with your project talk about it make
  • 00:13:15
sure you include it in your work but if
  • 00:13:17
you don't have it or if you want to add
  • 00:13:19
on in addition to that design impact
  • 00:13:21
that you've had that's awesome as well
  • 00:13:24
lastly if you want to talk about this
  • 00:13:25
and more with me one on one you can
  • 00:13:27
always book a mentoring session with me
  • 00:13:29
over on superpeer have a great week talk
  • 00:13:31
    to you next time
