Sintesi

hey it's Mr Johns welcome to the second
  • 00:00:09
presentation for unit one this one we're
  • 00:00:12
going to cover Idaho traffic laws every
  • 00:00:15
state has their own laws there are some
  • 00:00:17
that of course are nationwide but some
  • 00:00:20
are specific to our state so let's cover
  • 00:00:23
some of these things today the
  • 00:00:25
purpose of laws is to make our road
  • 00:00:28
safer by providing expect expect ations
  • 00:00:30
and requirements for how drivers and
  • 00:00:33
other roadway users will act while on
  • 00:00:36
    the
  • 00:00:37
road just like a lot of laws without
  • 00:00:40
them it would be chaos and so yeah sure
  • 00:00:42
it would be great to be able to drive as
  • 00:00:44
fast as you want and do whatever you
  • 00:00:46
want on the road it just would not be a
  • 00:00:48
safe environment for any of us so that's
  • 00:00:51
the purpose you can find all Idaho
  • 00:00:53
traffic laws online just for searching
  • 00:00:56
uh just by searching for aaho tidle 49
  • 00:00:59
    motor vehicle
  • 00:01:01
vehicles that will take you directly to
  • 00:01:03
it if you just search for AO traffic
  • 00:01:04
laws it would probably get you there
  • 00:01:05
eventually as well um but this is a
  • 00:01:07
screenshot of what that website looks
  • 00:01:10
like it's a government website and you
  • 00:01:12
can click on and download any specific
  • 00:01:15
category or topic so while this course
  • 00:01:18
will not go into every detail and even
  • 00:01:21
the aaho driver's manual or handbook
  • 00:01:23
doesn't go into every law um they are
  • 00:01:27
    all available right here uh
  • 00:01:30
on this website the handbook looks like
  • 00:01:33
this it's updated every year or two and
  • 00:01:35
the laws and facts that you need to know
  • 00:01:37
to pass the state test we call it the
  • 00:01:40
DMV's written exam are all in the latest
  • 00:01:43
version of this handbook so while this
  • 00:01:46
class will cover more than what's in
  • 00:01:48
this handbook we do cover everything
  • 00:01:51
that's also in the handbook so we give
  • 00:01:53
you more than that for sure about what
  • 00:01:56
you need to study to pass the state test
  • 00:01:59
down the the line here six months after
  • 00:02:03
    finishing driver's training you should
  • 00:02:07
reread that manual several times to pass
  • 00:02:09
the test take my word for that um what
  • 00:02:15
you need to know this short presentation
  • 00:02:17
will cover the most important traffic
  • 00:02:18
laws you need to know before you start
  • 00:02:21
your six hours of driving lessons and
  • 00:02:23
what you can likely expect to be on the
  • 00:02:26
state test the written test so let's
  • 00:02:28
    talk about stopping laws
  • 00:02:31
you must stop before a stop line or
  • 00:02:35
crosswalk let me explain the difference
  • 00:02:37
stop lines are bigger wider White Lines
  • 00:02:41
there's one of them and it's called a
  • 00:02:43
stop line if there is one you have to
  • 00:02:46
stop before you touch it with your car
  • 00:02:50
if there's a crosswalk you need to stop
  • 00:02:53
    before you get into the
  • 00:02:56
crosswalk uh and there will be two
  • 00:02:58
    that's a crosswalk right so there's two
  • 00:03:00
thinner white lines where people walk um
  • 00:03:04
and if there are no lines at all just
  • 00:03:06
stop before you enter the intersection
  • 00:03:08
so kind of an imaginary line between the
  • 00:03:11
sidewalks um left and right um You just
  • 00:03:15
make sure you don't poke your bumper out
  • 00:03:17
your front the front of your car out
  • 00:03:19
into traffic that should make sense um
  • 00:03:21
but you do have to stop in most
  • 00:03:25
situations um but be aware stop line
  • 00:03:28
    first
  • 00:03:30
um crosswalk second um or if there's a
  • 00:03:35
red light like this one on the screen
  • 00:03:37
here obviously you would need to stop um
  • 00:03:40
there as well now here's a little bit of
  • 00:03:43
    uh trivia the stop
  • 00:03:47
sign does not mean you have to stop at
  • 00:03:50
the sign that is not what the sign means
  • 00:03:53
    it's an
  • 00:03:55
indication that you'll be stopping at
  • 00:03:57
    that intersection that's all so
  • 00:04:00
um when you see a stop sign just know
  • 00:04:03
that you have to stop at that
  • 00:04:05
intersection so the next thing you look
  • 00:04:06
for is a stop line if there isn't one is
  • 00:04:09
there a crosswalk if there isn't one
  • 00:04:12
stop before you get into the
  • 00:04:15
intersection I also think it's important
  • 00:04:18
not to cross um like where the sidewalks
  • 00:04:21
    if I'm looking left right
  • 00:04:23
left don't interfere with the sidewalk
  • 00:04:26
there could be someone especially these
  • 00:04:28
    days with motorized scooters and
  • 00:04:30
bicycles um they could just come flying
  • 00:04:32
down there and uh here you are stopped
  • 00:04:35
in the middle of that sidewalk uh area
  • 00:04:38
there's no sidewalk there but you know
  • 00:04:40
    what I
  • 00:04:40
mean in the middle of Where the Sidewalk
  • 00:04:43
would be as it crosses that street so
  • 00:04:47
that those would be kind of the steps
  • 00:04:49
that I would take When approaching is
  • 00:04:52
there a stop sign yes okay look for a
  • 00:04:54
stop line next look for a crosswalk next
  • 00:04:57
look for a sidewalk and and don't stop
  • 00:05:01
where you would block it right and
  • 00:05:04
finally just make sure you don't stop in
  • 00:05:07
the street so that's kind of the
  • 00:05:09
progression of how that works so you do
  • 00:05:10
have to stop for any red light or sign
  • 00:05:13
whether it's flashing or solid for
  • 00:05:16
pedestrian crosswalk in a marked or
  • 00:05:18
unmarked crosswalk so what does that
  • 00:05:21
mean marked or unmarked that's kind of
  • 00:05:24
    interesting um it's interesting
  • 00:05:26
terminology that's exactly how the law
  • 00:05:28
is written um obviously a marked
  • 00:05:30
crosswalk has the two white lines so
  • 00:05:33
    that's obvious an unmarked crosswalk
  • 00:05:35
    it's interesting right there's nothing
  • 00:05:38
there it's where people cross the street
  • 00:05:42
    between um
  • 00:05:44
    corners of an
  • 00:05:47
    intersection basically pedestrians have
  • 00:05:49
the right away um and if you keep that
  • 00:05:52
in mind you'll be safe um you'll be
  • 00:05:54
doing the right thing so pedestrians
  • 00:05:57
have the right away and you have to stop
  • 00:05:59
if you see a pedestrian Crossing you
  • 00:06:02
have to stop at a railroad crossing when
  • 00:06:03
a train is coming or when a when train
  • 00:06:06
signals Gates or signs indicate that
  • 00:06:08
    there is a train
  • 00:06:11
    approaching that obviously is super
  • 00:06:13
dangerous the you'll never be a train uh
  • 00:06:16
in a contest or in a crash so you stop
  • 00:06:20
you stop and so um you just stop they
  • 00:06:25
are bigger uh heavier and faster than
  • 00:06:28
    they look
  • 00:06:29
um so you if if if any of those things
  • 00:06:33
are present um you stop if you see it or
  • 00:06:36
hear it or there's a signal a gate or a
  • 00:06:39
sign that says um there's a train
  • 00:06:41
approaching you stop you also have to
  • 00:06:43
stop here's interesting fact you have to
  • 00:06:45
stop when entering a street from an
  • 00:06:47
    Alleyway building driveway or private
  • 00:06:49
road if you have a long driveway or a
  • 00:06:53
short driveway you have to stop before
  • 00:06:57
you enter the street which means you you
  • 00:06:59
can't just pull out of the garage and
  • 00:07:01
fly into the street you have to pull out
  • 00:07:03
stop look and then enter the street so
  • 00:07:07
same thing for Alleyways um when
  • 00:07:10
entering a street from a building so
  • 00:07:12
that would be like there's a parking
  • 00:07:14
garage or something like that and you're
  • 00:07:16
    entering the street from that
  • 00:07:18
building all right you here's some other
  • 00:07:20
things you also have to stop at the
  • 00:07:22
request of a police officer if they are
  • 00:07:24
tell showing you stop something's going
  • 00:07:26
on up ahead for an emergency or police
  • 00:07:28
vehicle in a siren or flashing red or
  • 00:07:31
blue lights and you must move over to
  • 00:07:33
the right side as far as possible and
  • 00:07:36
stop until they go by so important we do
  • 00:07:40
that stop for a school bus that is
  • 00:07:42
loading or unloading students or has its
  • 00:07:44
stop sign or flashing lights on and you
  • 00:07:47
are behind it you always have to stop if
  • 00:07:50
you're behind it if they're doing that
  • 00:07:53
however and by the way this is a
  • 00:07:55
question that you'll see not only on my
  • 00:07:56
final but on the state test make sure
  • 00:07:58
you understand school bus laws you have
  • 00:08:01
to stop for a school bus that is loading
  • 00:08:03
or unloading students or has it stop
  • 00:08:05
sign out or flashing lights on that's
  • 00:08:08
just like the previous fact this one is
  • 00:08:12
on the if you're on the other side of
  • 00:08:14
the road and you're approaching the bus
  • 00:08:17
if there are less than two lanes going
  • 00:08:19
in each Direction you have to
  • 00:08:21
stop so you have to kind of picture that
  • 00:08:24
in your mind you have to know what that
  • 00:08:26
    means if it's a four-lane road
  • 00:08:29
you have two lanes on your side and the
  • 00:08:32
bus is on the other side with its own
  • 00:08:34
two lanes you don't have to stop but if
  • 00:08:37
there's fewer Lanes than that if there
  • 00:08:40
are three lanes which includes the
  • 00:08:42
middle turn lane or just a two lane road
  • 00:08:45
you have to stop no matter what on
  • 00:08:46
either side make sure you understand
  • 00:08:49
that four-lane road you don't have to
  • 00:08:51
stop if you're approaching it three or
  • 00:08:54
less everybody stops for a school bus
  • 00:08:56
that's because the school bus drivers
  • 00:08:58
are trained to let students cross the
  • 00:09:01
road in either direction if it's a three
  • 00:09:05
    lane or two-lane
  • 00:09:08
road so it's for safety and if involved
  • 00:09:12
in a wreck you have to
  • 00:09:14
stop speed limit laws the basic rule so
  • 00:09:17
we have something called the basic rule
  • 00:09:19
the basic rule no matter what the posted
  • 00:09:21
speed you must judge the situation and
  • 00:09:24
    conditions and adjust your speed
  • 00:09:27
accordingly even driving to too slow in
  • 00:09:30
good conditions and holding up traffic
  • 00:09:32
is breaking the basic rule driving too
  • 00:09:35
fast in like snowy icy conditions is is
  • 00:09:39
breaking the basic rule I had a trick
  • 00:09:42
question on uh a test when I was
  • 00:09:46
teaching driver's ed in the classroom uh
  • 00:09:49
and yeah I I did trick questions all the
  • 00:09:51
time uh really want you guys to think
  • 00:09:53
not just memorize so the question
  • 00:09:56
was a driver is going 10 m an hour
  • 00:10:01
underneath the posted speed limit but
  • 00:10:03
    the roads are
  • 00:10:06
icy can a police officer give that
  • 00:10:08
    driver a speeding
  • 00:10:11
ticket the answer is yes they are going
  • 00:10:14
too fast for the conditions so uh be
  • 00:10:19
aware of that and sometimes our roads
  • 00:10:22
are just terrible and the speed limits
  • 00:10:24
are not uh appropriate at all um
  • 00:10:30
and the best way to know that by the way
  • 00:10:32
and we'll cover that when we get into
  • 00:10:34
    talking about weather driving in
  • 00:10:35
    different weather conditions I've told
  • 00:10:38
taught and told all of my students and
  • 00:10:40
my own kids first thing you do on an icy
  • 00:10:43
snowy uh morning if you have to drive to
  • 00:10:46
school or someplace you get out in your
  • 00:10:48
neighborhood and kind of Slam on the
  • 00:10:49
brake step on the brake hard with nobody
  • 00:10:52
around you you know and test see what
  • 00:10:54
happens if your car slides uh and you
  • 00:10:56
can't come to the normal stop then you
  • 00:10:58
know there's an issue with the road
  • 00:11:01
conditions and so your speed limit is
  • 00:11:03
going to have to be lower right your
  • 00:11:05
speed uh the maximum speed in Idaho is
  • 00:11:08
75 miles hour on freeways unless
  • 00:11:11
    otherwise posted now that's interesting
  • 00:11:14
because there are a few locations where
  • 00:11:16
it is posted 80 but in general if you
  • 00:11:19
are asked this question anywhere what's
  • 00:11:21
the maximum speed limit in Idaho it's 75
  • 00:11:25
    with the
  • 00:11:27
    little
  • 00:11:29
asterisk there are a few places where
  • 00:11:32
it's posted 80 so that's why it means
  • 00:11:34
    unless otherwise posted vehicles with
  • 00:11:37
five more axles which we're talking
  • 00:11:39
about semi- trucks here and over 26,000
  • 00:11:41
lbs must drive no faster than 10 m hour
  • 00:11:43
under the posted speed limit so like
  • 00:11:45
here there's a speed limit sign that
  • 00:11:47
said 70 all trucks big trucks have to
  • 00:11:51
    drive 60 now do
  • 00:11:54
they no no by law they have to they have
  • 00:11:58
    to
  • 00:11:59
    right
  • 00:12:01
um that's a safety thing it takes them
  • 00:12:03
so much longer to stop and it's a danger
  • 00:12:06
it's a hazard if they are going the same
  • 00:12:09
speed that a little tiny convertible or
  • 00:12:11
any small car is going um it's just a
  • 00:12:14
different it's physics it's different uh
  • 00:12:17
minimum speeds there is a minimum speed
  • 00:12:19
Believe It or Not uh it is illegal to
  • 00:12:20
drive so slowly that you disrupt the
  • 00:12:22
flow of traffic so you have to you have
  • 00:12:25
    to drive um
  • 00:12:29
either the speed limit or close to it uh
  • 00:12:33
without going over it um honestly if you
  • 00:12:37
are I mean that's the law so um is are
  • 00:12:40
you going to get pulled over if you're
  • 00:12:41
going the speed limit and there's people
  • 00:12:43
    behind you honking and
  • 00:12:45
tailgating while that's stressful I do
  • 00:12:48
not think you would get a ticket you are
  • 00:12:50
going the speed limit you are
  • 00:12:52
driving as fast as um a person is
  • 00:12:57
allowed to in that situation ation um
  • 00:12:59
but the law also says it's illegal to
  • 00:13:02
drive so slowly that you disrupt the
  • 00:13:04
normal flow of traffic I would move over
  • 00:13:06
so I would still move over don't don't
  • 00:13:09
if you can right if there's multiple
  • 00:13:11
Lanes move over let people go past you
  • 00:13:13
just know that people will speed people
  • 00:13:15
will speed and I grew up in Idaho I've
  • 00:13:17
been here for a long time and people
  • 00:13:19
would drive five miles per hour over
  • 00:13:22
that was kind of the expect not the
  • 00:13:24
expectation that's the wrong word that's
  • 00:13:26
this this the standard that's the
  • 00:13:29
average the people were driving even
  • 00:13:31
though it's against the law um and as
  • 00:13:34
people have moved to our state I've
  • 00:13:37
noticed that it is now definitely closer
  • 00:13:39
to 10 and sometimes 15 miles an hour
  • 00:13:42
over the speed limit that is just the
  • 00:13:44
    flow of traffic
  • 00:13:46
    it's it's all I can say is it's illegal
  • 00:13:50
um and don't get caught up with in it
  • 00:13:52
you know P just move to the right lane
  • 00:13:54
um the left lane is for passing move to
  • 00:13:56
the right side and let those people who
  • 00:13:58
are are willing to take that risk go by
  • 00:14:00
you so um you may also not travel in the
  • 00:14:04
far left lane if you're impeding the
  • 00:14:06
flow of traffic traveling at a lawful
  • 00:14:08
speed there's a fine line there right uh
  • 00:14:11
if you're going the speed limit and
  • 00:14:13
you're in the left lane that should be
  • 00:14:14
okay but there's also another law that
  • 00:14:16
says you have to stay to the right as
  • 00:14:19
much as possible you know if possible
  • 00:14:22
Drive in the right lane so let you know
  • 00:14:26
the left lane is kind of considered the
  • 00:14:27
passing Lane so if you're you know if
  • 00:14:30
you've got traffic behind you you should
  • 00:14:33
    move to the
  • 00:14:34
right racing it is illegal to engag in
  • 00:14:37
any vehicle race or speed exhibition
  • 00:14:39
that means you can't spin out burn your
  • 00:14:42
tires you can't race a you know somebody
  • 00:14:45
next to you who revs their engine and
  • 00:14:47
they want to see who has the faster car
  • 00:14:49
that's against the law uh definitely all
  • 00:14:53
right R of right of way laws just the
  • 00:14:56
    RightWay means who has the
  • 00:14:59
the legal right to go first okay right
  • 00:15:03
of way right of way covers the laws that
  • 00:15:05
clarify who legally goes first in
  • 00:15:07
    certain traffic situations it's very
  • 00:15:10
simple and we'll cover a few of the
  • 00:15:13
things that'll clarify this for you one
  • 00:15:15
of the things that I was stressed about
  • 00:15:17
when I Learned to Drive was four-way
  • 00:15:18
stops I'm so nervous about doing the
  • 00:15:21
wrong thing I was especially at that age
  • 00:15:24
that I was so worried I wouldn't know
  • 00:15:26
what to do and I just sit there and i'
  • 00:15:28
like am I supposed to to go who else
  • 00:15:29
goes who goes next who it's not that
  • 00:15:31
complicated so just take a deep breath
  • 00:15:34
and by the way you give the right away
  • 00:15:35
to others you don't take it from them a
  • 00:15:37
lot of drivers do not know the laws so
  • 00:15:40
just yield to them if necessary even if
  • 00:15:42
you know it's your turn but they start
  • 00:15:44
going why why why fight over it why deal
  • 00:15:48
with it just let them go
  • 00:15:50
    but
  • 00:15:51
um that's just the way it is so one sign
  • 00:15:54
that helps drivers know who has the
  • 00:15:55
right away is this sign the yield sign
  • 00:15:58
so if you have the yield sign facing you
  • 00:16:01
you yield you give the other drivers the
  • 00:16:05
right of way so you must yield when
  • 00:16:07
there is a yield sign uh you must yield
  • 00:16:09
to faster traffic stay to the right when
  • 00:16:11
possible we just talked about that when
  • 00:16:13
entering a street from an alley driveway
  • 00:16:14
or garage after stopping we talked about
  • 00:16:16
that at a four-way stop we will talk
  • 00:16:19
about that in a moment at unmarked or
  • 00:16:22
    uncontrolled intersection so unmarked
  • 00:16:25
just means like a four uh a four-way
  • 00:16:27
    intersection in your neighborhood hood
  • 00:16:28
that doesn't have any signs and there
  • 00:16:31
are some neighborhoods there are a lot
  • 00:16:32
    of neighborhoods that way most
  • 00:16:34
neighborhoods in some cities and towns
  • 00:16:37
are that way with no stop signs or yield
  • 00:16:40
signs and so you just yield
  • 00:16:43
to other people and there are laws for
  • 00:16:46
that like whoever gets their first goes
  • 00:16:48
first is kind of the the basic law there
  • 00:16:51
uh and that makes total sense uh when
  • 00:16:53
stopped for cross traffic yield to
  • 00:16:55
others when making a left turn you
  • 00:16:57
should always yield to oncoming traffic
  • 00:17:00
so just know you never pull in front of
  • 00:17:02
traffic if there's two cars one's going
  • 00:17:05
straight one's turning um let the
  • 00:17:07
straight typically let the straight car
  • 00:17:10
goes go first if you pull in front of a
  • 00:17:12
car that could be uh super bad um yield
  • 00:17:17
in in school or construction zones and
  • 00:17:20
yield for emergency vehicles we do have
  • 00:17:23
a slow down Move Over Law in Idaho um
  • 00:17:27
we're just trying to protect our First
  • 00:17:29
Responders um and police force out there
  • 00:17:33
super important I mean they are working
  • 00:17:36
the dangerous roads that's their office
  • 00:17:39
right so the law requires that you move
  • 00:17:41
over a lane or if you can't Slow Down
  • 00:17:45
    When approaching an emergency vehicle
  • 00:17:47
that has stopped ahead of you on the
  • 00:17:48
side of the road so if I see this police
  • 00:17:51
    officer talking to uh a
  • 00:17:54
vehicle on the side of the road and I
  • 00:17:57
have the option to stay stay in the lane
  • 00:17:59
right next to him or do a lane change
  • 00:18:02
and move over to the left lane the law
  • 00:18:06
actually requires that I have to move
  • 00:18:08
over to the left lane if I can now if
  • 00:18:11
    there's a car right next to me I can't
  • 00:18:12
so I just slow down I actually do kind
  • 00:18:14
of move a little bit left just out of
  • 00:18:16
respect to give more room to that
  • 00:18:21
    officer
  • 00:18:22
pedestrians let's talk about that first
  • 00:18:24
of all blind pedestrians always have the
  • 00:18:27
    right away they can't
  • 00:18:28
see um I know in in in boisey there is u
  • 00:18:33
a a building for uh where it's an office
  • 00:18:37
I think for like a blind
  • 00:18:40
    um government um
  • 00:18:44
uh entity I don't know what else to call
  • 00:18:47
it but and people are trained people are
  • 00:18:49
people learn to walk from that building
  • 00:18:52
and practice in downtown boisee um and
  • 00:18:55
you'll see people with these white canes
  • 00:18:57
um and they're either going blind or
  • 00:18:59
they are blind and they're learning how
  • 00:19:02
to kind of interact with traffic talk
  • 00:19:04
    about frightening you
  • 00:19:06
know um so drivers our part is to yield
  • 00:19:11
the right away to any blind pedestrian
  • 00:19:14
carrying a clearly visible white cane so
  • 00:19:17
that is kind of the symbol I mean the
  • 00:19:18
law says it has to be a white cane um or
  • 00:19:21
if they're accompanied by a guide dog so
  • 00:19:23
if you see a person like holding on to a
  • 00:19:25
dog be aware they may they may or may
  • 00:19:28
not be blind um now a hearing impaired
  • 00:19:31
person also might be accompanied by a
  • 00:19:33
hearing aid dog so that's kind of a clue
  • 00:19:36
if you see someone holding a dog um not
  • 00:19:39
I mean it's tough right they could be
  • 00:19:41
just walking a dog but be you know just
  • 00:19:43
be aware regardless it's a pedestrian so
  • 00:19:46
if it's just a person walking a dog and
  • 00:19:49
they're in the crosswalk by the way they
  • 00:19:51
have the RightWay anyway so this is
  • 00:19:53
nothing new um or really that different
  • 00:19:56
it is just our job to be extra aware to
  • 00:20:00
provide the safety for this population
  • 00:20:03
of people on the road drivers crossing a
  • 00:20:06
sidewalk and so this old graphic I've
  • 00:20:09
    been using forever
  • 00:20:12
um is uh kind of the best example I
  • 00:20:15
could find um and um it just
  • 00:20:19
demonstrates that the driver of a
  • 00:20:21
vehicle crossing a sidewalk has to yield
  • 00:20:23
the right of way to any
  • 00:20:26
pedestrian and all other traffic that
  • 00:20:28
    includes skateboarders all those things
  • 00:20:31
that we talked about um before they
  • 00:20:33
cross the sidewalk so just be aware that
  • 00:20:37
streets are for drivers sidewalks are
  • 00:20:40
    for
  • 00:20:41
pedestrians um and they have the right
  • 00:20:44
away all right let's talk about the um
  • 00:20:47
the four rules of four-way stops they're
  • 00:20:49
not that stressful they're pretty simple
  • 00:20:52
rules yes you should memorize them yes
  • 00:20:55
you'll practice them in driver's ed yes
  • 00:20:57
you'll be going through them for the
  • 00:20:58
rest of your life so just know what they
  • 00:21:00
are step one rule one whoever gets there
  • 00:21:03
first goes first easy whoever gets there
  • 00:21:07
first goes first so there are times when
  • 00:21:09
I'm approaching an intersection and I
  • 00:21:10
can tell I'm going to get there at the
  • 00:21:11
same time as another car and even though
  • 00:21:14
I know what the law is and who would go
  • 00:21:17
first a lot of people don't so what I do
  • 00:21:20
I don't speed up um I slow down and
  • 00:21:23
that's just my attitude that's my
  • 00:21:25
approach to driving it's not a big deal
  • 00:21:28
    it's not a race I don't care I don't
  • 00:21:30
lose if I'm not first um I let them I
  • 00:21:33
let them I just break a little bit more
  • 00:21:36
let them get first get their first and
  • 00:21:38
by the way that just makes it clear they
  • 00:21:40
got their first so they go first and
  • 00:21:42
pretty much everybody knows that so that
  • 00:21:44
um has really helped my four-way stops
  • 00:21:48
in my life um but if two vehicles do get
  • 00:21:51
to the intersection at the same time and
  • 00:21:54
they're next to each other the car on
  • 00:21:57
the right has the right of way so just
  • 00:21:58
remember that word right the car on the
  • 00:22:00
right has the right of way easy the car
  • 00:22:03
on the right has the right of way if two
  • 00:22:05
cars get there at the same time and
  • 00:22:07
they're facing each other the Turning
  • 00:22:09
car yields we just talked about that to
  • 00:22:12
the car going straight there we go
  • 00:22:14
another simple one if you do get there
  • 00:22:17
you're straight across from another car
  • 00:22:18
they have their blinker on but you got
  • 00:22:20
there at the same time you would go
  • 00:22:22
first now do they know that maybe not
  • 00:22:26
    so be
  • 00:22:29
    um be prepared be
  • 00:22:32
cautious um but most people know it it's
  • 00:22:36
pretty simple last rule if two cars get
  • 00:22:38
there at the same time facing each other
  • 00:22:39
and one is turning right and the other
  • 00:22:41
is turning left the car turning right
  • 00:22:44
has the right of way if two cars get
  • 00:22:46
there at the same time facing each other
  • 00:22:49
okay so that's the same situation that
  • 00:22:50
we just talked about except for now both
  • 00:22:53
of them are turning ah what do you do
  • 00:22:56
well the T the car turning right has the
  • 00:22:58
right of way the car turning right so
  • 00:23:02
what that really means is don't pull in
  • 00:23:04
front of the other car still it still
  • 00:23:06
means that so if you're going left and
  • 00:23:08
    they're going right you're basically
  • 00:23:10
turning into the same Lane let the car
  • 00:23:12
going right go first it's it works out
  • 00:23:16
believe me it works out I guess there is
  • 00:23:18
another rule I just like the catchy
  • 00:23:20
phrase the four rules of four-way stops
  • 00:23:23
right but everybody always asks okay Mr
  • 00:23:27
John's what if four cars get there all
  • 00:23:31
at the same time by the way it happens
  • 00:23:35
    rarely but yes it
  • 00:23:37
happens uh I've experienced it a dozen
  • 00:23:40
or two or three times who knows over the
  • 00:23:43
years what do you do because none of
  • 00:23:45
these rules apply they everybody got
  • 00:23:48
there at the same time everybody has
  • 00:23:49
somebody on the right side on their
  • 00:23:51
right so um okay here's the rule with
  • 00:23:55
this that's not so much a a law or a
  • 00:23:59
rule it's just what you do it's what we
  • 00:24:01
expect of our good drivers which you
  • 00:24:04
will become we want you to be the one to
  • 00:24:07
reach out with your hand to the car and
  • 00:24:09
it helps by the way if you go to the car
  • 00:24:11
on your right if you if you if you just
  • 00:24:14
motion with your hand hey you go go to
  • 00:24:18
the car on your right what that does is
  • 00:24:20
it creates a flow so after that car goes
  • 00:24:27
the car on his right goes the car on her
  • 00:24:30
right goes and that comes right back to
  • 00:24:32
you yeah you probably end up going
  • 00:24:35
last you know it might take 20 more
  • 00:24:38
seconds or 10 more seconds but you will
  • 00:24:41
    have
  • 00:24:42
been uh the better driver maybe the
  • 00:24:45
better person in the situation again
  • 00:24:48
that's Mr johns's take on the whole
  • 00:24:50
thing but if no one does it you're going
  • 00:24:52
to sit at that intersection for the rest
  • 00:24:53
of your life you're going to get very
  • 00:24:55
hungry so that's what I recommend
  • 00:24:58
passing let's talk about passing you
  • 00:24:59
cannot pass on a hill or curve when you
  • 00:25:01
cannot see a head you can't pass within
  • 00:25:04
100 fet of an intersection railroad
  • 00:25:06
bridge or tunnel now you should be
  • 00:25:08
writing this stuff down uh to study
  • 00:25:10
later because yeah these are going to
  • 00:25:12
show up on a test uh at some point and
  • 00:25:15
some of these on the state test when
  • 00:25:18
behind a school bus that is stopped to
  • 00:25:19
load or unload students when there is a
  • 00:25:21
solid you can't pass we're talking about
  • 00:25:24
passing when there is a solid yellow
  • 00:25:26
line on your side of the road between
  • 00:25:29
you and oncoming traffic when a vehicle
  • 00:25:31
is stopped at a crosswalk to let a
  • 00:25:33
    pedestrian cross don't pass
  • 00:25:37
them when you if you have to go off the
  • 00:25:39
pavement to pass you can't do that you
  • 00:25:42
you have to stay on the road so we're
  • 00:25:44
talking about if you have to go around a
  • 00:25:46
car you can't do it if your tires even
  • 00:25:49
two of your tires or one of your tires
  • 00:25:52
touches the dirt or the gravel and and
  • 00:25:55
is off the road it's a good way to
  • 00:25:57
remember it that's the law all right
  • 00:25:59
speeding this is kind of interesting uh
  • 00:26:02
a fairly new law in Idaho if you're
  • 00:26:04
driving a vehicle that's not Towing
  • 00:26:06
another vehicle you can exceed the
  • 00:26:08
posted speed limit by up to 15 miles per
  • 00:26:11
hour while passing another vehicle that
  • 00:26:13
is traveling below the posted speed
  • 00:26:15
    limit on a two-lane road okay that's a
  • 00:26:18
lot of words it just means you can speed
  • 00:26:21
to pass someone else who's going
  • 00:26:25
slow and the specifics of that you can't
  • 00:26:28
be towing a car they have to be going
  • 00:26:31
beneath the speed limit you can only go
  • 00:26:34
up to 15 M hour miles an hour over the
  • 00:26:37
speed limit and there's another rule the
  • 00:26:40
posted speed limit has to be at least 55
  • 00:26:43
    so you're on a highway you're you're in
  • 00:26:45
    a fast situation it's a 55 or higher
  • 00:26:48
Zone and you're allowed to speed I think
  • 00:26:51
    what this has done is
  • 00:26:54
um made it so like big heavy trucks
  • 00:26:57
hauling heavy loads or RVs that can
  • 00:27:02
barely go the speed limit uh on trips on
  • 00:27:05
the windy mountain roads of Idaho that
  • 00:27:07
hold up remember if you hold up three
  • 00:27:09
    cars you have to pull
  • 00:27:12
over we know that not everybody follows
  • 00:27:14
the laws so uh and you can't P be you're
  • 00:27:17
like well I'd like to pass this person
  • 00:27:20
    but I can't because they're going 54 and
  • 00:27:23
    a 55 well I guess that wouldn't work has
  • 00:27:25
    to be at least 55 they're going 5 7 in a
  • 00:27:30
    60 okay
  • 00:27:33
um you would just have to go behind them
  • 00:27:37
the whole way for the whole trip now
  • 00:27:40
with this law in a safe place a passing
  • 00:27:44
zone where you can see that there's an
  • 00:27:47
    opening for a long
  • 00:27:49
ways or there's two lanes or's like a
  • 00:27:51
passing Lane you can punch it a little
  • 00:27:54
bit and get it up to 15 M an hour over
  • 00:27:56
the posted speed limit to pass excellent
  • 00:27:58
you must also return to the right lane
  • 00:28:00
oh that's a typo return to the right
  • 00:28:03
lane and reduce your speed back to the
  • 00:28:06
posted speed limit as soon as
  • 00:28:10
possible passing on the right passing on
  • 00:28:12
the right well normally you don't do
  • 00:28:15
that but you can pass another vehicle on
  • 00:28:17
the right only if the other vehicle is
  • 00:28:20
stopped and signaling to turn left
  • 00:28:22
that's this graphic right here so you
  • 00:28:24
can see um it's a one I mean this is a
  • 00:28:27
two lane Main Road this is interesting
  • 00:28:29
this middle color should probably be
  • 00:28:31
yellow not white because this would mean
  • 00:28:33
    this is a one-way street so that's
  • 00:28:36
that's incorrect um I just got this off
  • 00:28:38
the internet I didn't make it but maybe
  • 00:28:40
I'll fix it this should be yellow
  • 00:28:42
    because this is a two-lane road we're
  • 00:28:43
assuming this car a is turning here car
  • 00:28:47
B is like oh man what if there's a whole
  • 00:28:50
bunch of cars coming lots and lots and
  • 00:28:52
lots of cars it's five o'clock traffic
  • 00:28:53
lots and lots and lots and the car B
  • 00:28:55
just wants to go around well this is a
  • 00:28:58
pretty wide Lane uh he can do it that
  • 00:29:01
driver can do it um if he can do it
  • 00:29:05
without be driving in the grass remember
  • 00:29:08
the law says you have to stay on the
  • 00:29:09
road so this is a great other than these
  • 00:29:12
    lines should be
  • 00:29:13
yellow that's just me being picky
  • 00:29:16
driver's ed guy um car B can go around
  • 00:29:20
even if it was a little bit skinnier the
  • 00:29:22
lane is skinnier if he can do it without
  • 00:29:25
getting on the grass or hitting that the
  • 00:29:28
blue car he can pass on the right by the
  • 00:29:32
way you can also pass on the right if
  • 00:29:33
there are multiple Lanes going in the
  • 00:29:34
direction you're traveling of course you
  • 00:29:36
can so this circle graphic over here
  • 00:29:38
just is like okay this is a one-way
  • 00:29:40
Street um or there's two lanes going the
  • 00:29:44
    same direction and someone's going
  • 00:29:47
slow uh or turning in front of you you
  • 00:29:51
just do a lane change so that's obvious
  • 00:29:53
that's so obvious but this other one
  • 00:29:56
maybe not so much so keep that in mind
  • 00:29:58
please slow moving Vehicles we do live
  • 00:30:01
in Idaho we do see this uh scenario some
  • 00:30:05
    of you much more than
  • 00:30:08
others as I was looking at this graphic
  • 00:30:10
    I'm like I'm not sure if he's
  • 00:30:12
legal so it's a little hard to tell in
  • 00:30:15
the daytime any idea what I'm talking
  • 00:30:18
about I mean looks like it he's got two
  • 00:30:21
great slow moving vehicle signs right so
  • 00:30:24
by the way slow moving vehicle signs are
  • 00:30:27
triangles with a point up yield signs
  • 00:30:31
they're flipped and they say yield so um
  • 00:30:33
keep that keep that straight and also
  • 00:30:35
the tips are cut off on the red border
  • 00:30:38
    around a slow-moving vehicle sign um a
  • 00:30:41
    regular passenger vehicle slowing down
  • 00:30:43
three or more cars on a rural road or
  • 00:30:46
Highway must pull over and let traffic
  • 00:30:48
pass I just talked about that previously
  • 00:30:51
magic number is three if you're slowing
  • 00:30:54
down three or more cars by law you have
  • 00:30:57
to pull over when you can where you can
  • 00:31:00
and let cars pass you now with
  • 00:31:06
tractors vehicles or other vehicles that
  • 00:31:08
are designated as slow moving Vehicles
  • 00:31:11
they they move from field to field as
  • 00:31:13
some of you know um so they do have to
  • 00:31:16
be on public roads to do that um but
  • 00:31:19
they also have to follow some some
  • 00:31:22
laws of being a vehicle on the road so
  • 00:31:25
they have to have that sign the bright
  • 00:31:28
orange slow moving vehicle sign they
  • 00:31:31
have to travel no faster than 25 miles
  • 00:31:35
per hour so when you see one you know
  • 00:31:38
    they're going 25 or
  • 00:31:40
less um and they have to have a foot
  • 00:31:42
break so they can stop uh but they also
  • 00:31:46
have to have turn signals and that's
  • 00:31:47
what I was looking at with this tractor
  • 00:31:49
    like
  • 00:31:50
um hard to tell in the daytime you know
  • 00:31:53
but you have to have turn signals also
  • 00:31:56
parking you must part closer than 18 in
  • 00:31:59
from the curb so that means you have to
  • 00:32:02
be like this this double-sided Arrow has
  • 00:32:05
    to
  • 00:32:06
be 18 or less inches 18 or less you
  • 00:32:10
cannot be out further into the street
  • 00:32:12
that's all it means I don't like to bump
  • 00:32:14
the curb it's hard on your tires and
  • 00:32:16
    wheels
  • 00:32:18
um and so you'll get used to it it it
  • 00:32:20
takes some practice you know if you
  • 00:32:23
shoot for a foot about a foot 12 in the
  • 00:32:26
    length the length of a
  • 00:32:27
ruler you're good you know how do you do
  • 00:32:30
that well practice that's all it is
  • 00:32:33
practice but the law says you cannot be
  • 00:32:35
further than 18 in away or you're too
  • 00:32:37
far out in the street that basically is
  • 00:32:39
how they know like how wide to to make
  • 00:32:42
roads cuz like well if a car is here but
  • 00:32:44
it's 18 inches from the curb okay and a
  • 00:32:46
car is on the other side of the street
  • 00:32:48
18 inches from the curb that leaves you
  • 00:32:51
know how much room this is how many how
  • 00:32:53
much traffic we need so that's why
  • 00:32:56
there's that law let's talk about
  • 00:32:58
parking on a hill maybe you live on a
  • 00:33:02
hill um and you don't want your car to
  • 00:33:04
roll away that's the point the whole
  • 00:33:06
point of parking on a hill and knowing
  • 00:33:08
how to do it if you just think
  • 00:33:10
of how what do I do with my tires so I
  • 00:33:13
don't my car does not roll away so when
  • 00:33:16
I come back from or I come out from my
  • 00:33:18
house or it's parked at the mall and
  • 00:33:20
    they have a steep I don't know I don't
  • 00:33:22
know I'm trying to think of a situation
  • 00:33:25
or a scenario um you want to come out
  • 00:33:27
and go oh where's my car um so let's
  • 00:33:30
look at the far left side this is
  • 00:33:31
downhill you are parking downhill so the
  • 00:33:34
the whole point here if you just
  • 00:33:36
remember this you don't want your car to
  • 00:33:38
    roll into
  • 00:33:41
traffic that could hurt somebody kill
  • 00:33:43
somebody right so this one downhill you
  • 00:33:47
turn your front wheels right if for some
  • 00:33:49
reason it pops out of gear or an
  • 00:33:51
emergency brake isn't working it will
  • 00:33:53
this right tire will stop against the
  • 00:33:56
curb hopefully right it'll it'll you can
  • 00:33:59
actually lock it you can roll into the
  • 00:34:01
curb before you stop your car um and
  • 00:34:05
some steering wheels even lock when you
  • 00:34:07
turn them so this car can't go anywhere
  • 00:34:10
that's a safety thing okay the car uh
  • 00:34:12
the picture in the middle uphill so now
  • 00:34:15
headlights are going up okay so we're
  • 00:34:17
parking uphill well now we have to do it
  • 00:34:19
just the opposite turn your wheels to
  • 00:34:21
the left and then lock it and you can
  • 00:34:24
actually roll back into the curbs so the
  • 00:34:27
tire is kind of locked touching the
  • 00:34:30
cement the curb um and if it pops out of
  • 00:34:33
    gear for whatever
  • 00:34:34
reason it the T the tire will hold that
  • 00:34:38
car it's pretty impressive how it works
  • 00:34:40
but it does work it's just kind of
  • 00:34:42
locked against that curb so and then
  • 00:34:44
this third option over here uphill or
  • 00:34:47
downhill doesn't matter if there's no
  • 00:34:49
    curb you want
  • 00:34:52
to turn your wheels right so if it does
  • 00:34:55
pop out of gear It Go goes off the
  • 00:34:58
road it won't pull won't go into
  • 00:35:01
oncoming traffic right so that's kind of
  • 00:35:03
the scenario so think about that and
  • 00:35:06
these pictures should help you to kind
  • 00:35:08
of memorize and understand the concept
  • 00:35:11
uh to keep your car from rolling into
  • 00:35:13
traffic how would I lock my wheels
  • 00:35:16
against the curb or which way should I
  • 00:35:18
turn my wheels to roll away from traffic
  • 00:35:21
    so hope that
  • 00:35:23
helps all right this slide man these
  • 00:35:26
numbers may be hard to memorize write
  • 00:35:29
them down yes you'll see them yes you'll
  • 00:35:32
see them on the state test which
  • 00:35:36
ones I can't really tell you they change
  • 00:35:39
the test once you know from time to time
  • 00:35:42
if I had to guess I mean my job is to
  • 00:35:44
help you pass that test um and
  • 00:35:47
understand the law and know how to drive
  • 00:35:49
and all that stuff too but I would say
  • 00:35:51
they're going to ask you the how far
  • 00:35:53
from a fire hydrant can you park and how
  • 00:35:55
    far from a stop sign
  • 00:35:57
if I had to guess I've seen that
  • 00:35:58
question multiple times on tests so let
  • 00:36:01
me go through these you cannot park in a
  • 00:36:03
bike lane or on a sidewalk you can't
  • 00:36:06
park in front of a driveway or on a
  • 00:36:08
freeway you can't park closer than 15
  • 00:36:12
feet from a fire hydrant okay just think
  • 00:36:15
you know fire trucks need to get in
  • 00:36:16
there to hook up if there's a fire so
  • 00:36:19
    that's why 15 fet 15 ft just remember 15
  • 00:36:22
fire hydrant 15 for the fire hydrant 20
  • 00:36:24
ft of a crosswalk 30t of a stop
  • 00:36:27
sign I got a ticket once for parking
  • 00:36:30
like 20 ft from a stop
  • 00:36:32
sign which I thought was a long ways
  • 00:36:35
away this is downtown boisee and there
  • 00:36:38
were not very many parking places and
  • 00:36:41
I'm like oh and then I found a place
  • 00:36:43
near a corner like I was probably I
  • 00:36:46
think about 20 ft from a stop sign it
  • 00:36:48
looked like I could fit three cars there
  • 00:36:51
um I came back out and had a ticket and
  • 00:36:54
it said have to be 30 ft I'm like oh I
  • 00:36:56
should know that 30 feet that's a long
  • 00:36:59
ways so just remember 30 feet from a
  • 00:37:01
stop sign wow that's a long ways it's so
  • 00:37:04
the intersection is visible that's it I
  • 00:37:06
mean they all have they all have reasons
  • 00:37:09
that make sense you know did I like
  • 00:37:10
getting a ticket n not so much uh did I
  • 00:37:13
learn from it yep 30 feet from a stop
  • 00:37:16
sign so now you know you don't have to
  • 00:37:18
go get a ticket to find out don't park
  • 00:37:20
closer than 30 ft from a stop sign and
  • 00:37:22
the other one I don't think I've ever
  • 00:37:23
seen on a test but you know don't hold
  • 00:37:25
me to that if it's on your test you
  • 00:37:28
cannot park within 50 ft of a railroad
  • 00:37:30
    crossing that makes
  • 00:37:32
sense you can't park next to a red or
  • 00:37:35
blue painted curb those are emergency or
  • 00:37:38
handicapped curbs you can't park in a
  • 00:37:40
parking space that says handicapped of
  • 00:37:42
course not of course not never do that
  • 00:37:45
turn signals let's talk about signals
  • 00:37:48
signals you always have to Signal when
  • 00:37:50
changing lanes always always always the
  • 00:37:53
driver's ed um methodology ology is uh
  • 00:37:58
for just about all of us now your
  • 00:38:00
    instructor may do something different
  • 00:38:01
but we used um when I was in the car um
  • 00:38:05
and most of the instructors that I know
  • 00:38:07
    talk about
  • 00:38:08
smog not the dirty filthy sky but smog
  • 00:38:13
standing for Signal check your mirrors
  • 00:38:17
look over your look over your
  • 00:38:19
shoulder right and then go if clear so
  • 00:38:23
    signal s
  • 00:38:25
signal check your mirrors M look over o
  • 00:38:29
over your shoulder and g go if clear
  • 00:38:34
okay and if it's not clear don't go so I
  • 00:38:38
would use that term all the time I'd say
  • 00:38:40
let's do a smog to the left I mean I
  • 00:38:42
just got used to saying that so it's the
  • 00:38:44
same thing um as a lane change so you
  • 00:38:47
have to Signal when changing lanes um
  • 00:38:50
it's not for you it's for the people
  • 00:38:51
around you you have to Signal when
  • 00:38:53
passing another vehicle you have to
  • 00:38:54
Signal when you're turning at an in
  • 00:38:56
    intersection or entrance to something
  • 00:38:59
you have to Signal when you're pulling
  • 00:39:00
away from a curb cuz that's really a
  • 00:39:02
lane change so in driver's ed if you're
  • 00:39:04
at the curb expect the instructor to ask
  • 00:39:07
you to Signal before you pull
  • 00:39:09
away signal when entering or leaving a
  • 00:39:12
highway or freeway signal one pulling
  • 00:39:14
over to the side of the road just the
  • 00:39:16
opposite so you signal slide over and
  • 00:39:18
stop next to a curb and here's an
  • 00:39:22
    interesting kind of controversial one
  • 00:39:24
    signal when exiting around
  • 00:39:28
about there's a lot of discussion about
  • 00:39:31
this um for sure I've been involved in
  • 00:39:33
some of these uh discussions with
  • 00:39:35
lawmakers and others I think at one
  • 00:39:39
point they expected us to Signal when we
  • 00:39:41
entered and exited and we argued
  • 00:39:43
roundabout you can only go right so why
  • 00:39:46
why signal um but the law says you have
  • 00:39:49
to signal and an intersection and that's
  • 00:39:51
    considered an intersection it's a
  • 00:39:52
    roundabout
  • 00:39:54
intersection so um It Now does not say
  • 00:39:57
that um that you have to signal in but
  • 00:40:01
you do have to Signal out when you're
  • 00:40:03
exiting the roundabout why is that
  • 00:40:05
controversial well it's kind of hard
  • 00:40:08
sometimes when you're going around a
  • 00:40:10
roundabout and your hands are on the
  • 00:40:12
Wheel to to reach to to get your turn
  • 00:40:15
signal um so and the answer of course is
  • 00:40:19
well it's the law so slow down a little
  • 00:40:20
bit be able to do it you know so be
  • 00:40:22
prepared for it have your finger have
  • 00:40:24
your hands in a place where you can hold
  • 00:40:26
hold the wheel and reach and just
  • 00:40:29
quickly you know turn on your right
  • 00:40:30
signal not quickly you still have to
  • 00:40:31
signal for 5 seconds which is an by the
  • 00:40:34
way that's another thing you have to
  • 00:40:36
signal for 5 seconds but in a roundabout
  • 00:40:38
you really can't do that so but it's
  • 00:40:41
still the law so my job is to let you
  • 00:40:43
know what the law is and yes you should
  • 00:40:44
signal when you leave roundabout and you
  • 00:40:46
have to signal for at least 5 seconds or
  • 00:40:48
    100
  • 00:40:49
feet we used to teach 100 feet but most
  • 00:40:52
students and teachers wouldn't know what
  • 00:40:55
that was like what is is 30 what it's
  • 00:40:57
100t when you're going 35 miles hour or
  • 00:41:00
when you're going 75 miles an hour um so
  • 00:41:03
we really have changed that to 5 seconds
  • 00:41:05
because everybody can count to five so
  • 00:41:07
we say hey would you turn at the at this
  • 00:41:09
    intersection one you click 1 1,00 2
  • 00:41:12
    1,000 3 1000 4 1,000 5 1000 uh and
  • 00:41:17
everybody can do that and sometimes
  • 00:41:19
you'll hear the instructor doing that
  • 00:41:21
and sometimes we ask you to count out
  • 00:41:23
loud uh so we know that you know and 5
  • 00:41:26
seconds is is always 5 seconds so if
  • 00:41:28
    you're going 75 M hour or 10 it's 5
  • 00:41:31
seconds so it doesn't really matter all
  • 00:41:33
right turning right at a red light at a
  • 00:41:35
steady red light in Idaho and in Most
  • 00:41:37
states after you stop and look for cross
  • 00:41:41
traffic your yield to cross traffic at
  • 00:41:44
anybody in the in the crosswalk you can
  • 00:41:46
    go after you
  • 00:41:48
stop I remember when my my wording
  • 00:41:51
    wasn't very clear once in a driver's
  • 00:41:53
head class and I said you can turn right
  • 00:41:55
    at a red
  • 00:41:57
    I I I assumed that a student knew that I
  • 00:42:01
meant she had to stop first so she blew
  • 00:42:04
a red light went flying around the
  • 00:42:05
corner about 30 miles an hour so broke
  • 00:42:09
the law uh running a red light it was
  • 00:42:11
going way too fast um it surprised all
  • 00:42:15
of us I don't think it surprised her
  • 00:42:18
because she thought she could go right
  • 00:42:19
on a red so ever since then I have said
  • 00:42:22
after you stop and yield to cross
  • 00:42:24
    traffic and pedestrian
  • 00:42:27
um you can go on a red light if it's
  • 00:42:30
clear so uh make sure you know that law
  • 00:42:34
um you can go right can you go left on a
  • 00:42:36
red light wait a minute you can go left
  • 00:42:38
on a red light hey you want to
  • 00:42:42
    uh you want to
  • 00:42:46
uh challenge that's the word you want to
  • 00:42:48
    challenge your parents or challenge
  • 00:42:50
somebody ask them hey an Idaho can you
  • 00:42:53
    turn left on a red
  • 00:42:54
light they're going to say no because
  • 00:42:57
most people don't know this law I just
  • 00:42:59
looked it up again just to make sure I
  • 00:43:01
got the wording correct um the the law
  • 00:43:04
is when turning left from a one-way
  • 00:43:07
Street onto a oneway street you can go
  • 00:43:11
left when the lights red after stopping
  • 00:43:15
and yielding to cross traffic and the
  • 00:43:18
crosswalk and less otherwise posted it
  • 00:43:21
may say no no left turns but just so you
  • 00:43:24
know uh when we do in driver's ed
  • 00:43:27
    Sometimes some instructors will some
  • 00:43:28
instructors won't I would do it if I
  • 00:43:30
could because it feels so weird because
  • 00:43:34
it feels like you're running the red
  • 00:43:35
light it really does because you go
  • 00:43:36
through the red light you go under the
  • 00:43:38
red light and turn left but it's legal
  • 00:43:40
totally legal I'm sure the people behind
  • 00:43:42
you think you just ran the red light and
  • 00:43:44
it says driver's ed on the back of the
  • 00:43:45
car and they're going what is that
  • 00:43:47
School teaching these kids it's the law
  • 00:43:50
we can do it if it's safe and there's no
  • 00:43:52
cross traffic so another law that's
  • 00:43:54
interesting uh is the Open Range range
  • 00:43:56
    law when
  • 00:43:57
posted animals have the right of way
  • 00:44:00
we're talking about cows you know
  • 00:44:03
    Farmers that raise
  • 00:44:06
cattle can post or have a sign posted
  • 00:44:09
that says hey this is open range at some
  • 00:44:12
point I think it was like ranchers that
  • 00:44:14
had like a thousand acres there's no way
  • 00:44:16
they could afford to fence in a th ACR
  • 00:44:20
    of land
  • 00:44:24
um or even a to put it next to the
  • 00:44:27
highway so at some point the law
  • 00:44:31
became hey this is open range and if you
  • 00:44:34
hit one of my cows you have to pay for
  • 00:44:37
it if you survive the crash and you have
  • 00:44:40
to pay for your own car so it's an
  • 00:44:42
    expensive and dangerous situation I've
  • 00:44:45
always thought um interesting law I've
  • 00:44:48
always thought but I get it this is
  • 00:44:50
Idaho it's not New York City um and so
  • 00:44:53
be aware if you see cattle moving um um
  • 00:44:56
at all just know that if they walk in
  • 00:44:58
front of you and you hit it and kill it
  • 00:45:00
you pay for it and what a mess right
  • 00:45:04
    Idaho's open container
  • 00:45:06
law it's illegal to drink alcohol while
  • 00:45:09
    driving or even transport an
  • 00:45:13
    unsealed which means it's been
  • 00:45:15
opened container of alcohol in the
  • 00:45:18
inside of a vehicle so this picture this
  • 00:45:20
graphic is a great example if this is
  • 00:45:22
just on the back floor the floorboard of
  • 00:45:24
your car uh uh even if no alcohol is
  • 00:45:28
pouring out of it um it is an open
  • 00:45:31
container uh it's against the law so
  • 00:45:34
make sure I mean hopefully that's not
  • 00:45:36
even a scenario that would be in
  • 00:45:40
your uh reality um but just
  • 00:45:45
know um maybe you're riding with a
  • 00:45:48
friend and they have an old beer bottle
  • 00:45:49
sitting in the back seat um you could
  • 00:45:52
get in trouble so you just make sure
  • 00:45:54
there's no uh un uh uh unsealed bottles
  • 00:45:59
they can be in the trunk um it says in
  • 00:46:02
the in in the inside of a vehicle but um
  • 00:46:07
it just so be aware of that
  • 00:46:09
law other laws that you should know and
  • 00:46:12
many of these facts are on the state
  • 00:46:14
test headlights must be lighted from
  • 00:46:17
Sunset to Sunrise or when visibility is
  • 00:46:20
poor and I believe the definition of
  • 00:46:22
sunset and sunrise is like a 30 minutes
  • 00:46:25
a half hour before um sunrise and a half
  • 00:46:29
hour after Sunset that's how they
  • 00:46:32
interpret that so when the sun is
  • 00:46:33
actually down you have a half hour on
  • 00:46:35
either either side of that you have to
  • 00:46:37
have your headlights on you must now
  • 00:46:39
here's a question I know is on the state
  • 00:46:41
test memorize this you must dim your
  • 00:46:44
brights 500 feet before meeting and 200
  • 00:46:48
feet before coming up behind another
  • 00:46:49
vehicle we're talking about your brights
  • 00:46:51
so your brights that like bright they
  • 00:46:53
like blind people right and and it's
  • 00:46:56
pretty easy to remember why but maybe
  • 00:46:58
not so easy to remember the numbers so
  • 00:47:00
    just remember 500 and 200 500 and 200
  • 00:47:03
I'm not sure how to remember that but
  • 00:47:05
    500 and 200 the difference is a head-on
  • 00:47:09
collision is way more dangerous and so
  • 00:47:11
it's a bigger number so 500 feet before
  • 00:47:15
coming around a corner and another car
  • 00:47:17
is coming at you you have to dim go back
  • 00:47:20
to normal headlights and if you're
  • 00:47:22
coming around a corner and there's a car
  • 00:47:24
in front of you going the same direction
  • 00:47:25
ction make sure you Dim your
  • 00:47:27
headlights 200 ft or more or more this
  • 00:47:31
is minimum 200 ft before you come up
  • 00:47:34
behind them okay uh this one we talked
  • 00:47:36
about already it's illegal to race
  • 00:47:38
another car or show any sign of speed um
  • 00:47:41
next one windows and windshields must be
  • 00:47:43
kept Clean and Free of stickers signs or
  • 00:47:45
posters except those required by law
  • 00:47:49
good to know you can't have like bumper
  • 00:47:51
stickers and stickers in your on your
  • 00:47:53
glass in your car except the those
  • 00:47:56
    required by law
  • 00:47:58
so I've had people ask me well what
  • 00:48:00
about the little stickers that the oil
  • 00:48:01
company you like when you oil change
  • 00:48:03
companies when you go to Jiffy Lube or
  • 00:48:04
whatever they put a little sticker
  • 00:48:07
there good question right the law says
  • 00:48:11
    kept Clean and Free of
  • 00:48:14
stickers do I have a sticker in my car
  • 00:48:17
um from a oil change company I do up in
  • 00:48:21
the upper left corner almost all the way
  • 00:48:23
off to the side as far as possible
  • 00:48:26
    um so that's a tough one that's a tough
  • 00:48:29
one um but I think if you that's kind of
  • 00:48:32
understandable and we kind of are
  • 00:48:33
required I mean to do oil changes at
  • 00:48:36
some point now you might do your own oil
  • 00:48:38
changes and not have any stickers like
  • 00:48:41
    that at all fine that's
  • 00:48:42
great I think they're really I think the
  • 00:48:45
you know there's the law and then
  • 00:48:46
there's the intent of the law you've
  • 00:48:48
heard that I think they just mean don't
  • 00:48:50
cover your windshield and wind windows
  • 00:48:53
with a bunch of stickers right with
  • 00:48:54
stickers not a bunch but stickers you
  • 00:48:56
can't have stickers put them on your car
  • 00:48:58
or don't put them on at all so my job is
  • 00:49:01
to let you know what the law
  • 00:49:03
is and then you choose um when a load of
  • 00:49:06
something extends four feet or more out
  • 00:49:08
the back of your vehicle you have to
  • 00:49:10
have a red flag tied from the very end
  • 00:49:12
of that so I always say hey when you're
  • 00:49:14
going to Lowe's or Home Depot you get a
  • 00:49:17
uh a long 2x4 and it's 4 feet or longer
  • 00:49:21
sticking out the back of the truck uh or
  • 00:49:24
the car you have to um have a red flag
  • 00:49:30
    now I know those
  • 00:49:31
companies usually have like a little bin
  • 00:49:34
right out front and a hammer and some
  • 00:49:36
little tacks with a bunch of plastic
  • 00:49:38
Flags you can just take a a red plastic
  • 00:49:41
flag tack it on the end of your 2x4 and
  • 00:49:44
you're legal and safe the reason is if
  • 00:49:48
people pull up behind you and they pull
  • 00:49:49
up like they normally do that 2x4 is
  • 00:49:51
going to go right through the windshield
  • 00:49:53
and could really be bad bad news so
  • 00:49:56
that's why it is illegal to drive
  • 00:49:58
    recklessly or
  • 00:49:59
inattentively now that law covers a lot
  • 00:50:02
    of
  • 00:50:04
stuff and it's a good law I'm happy that
  • 00:50:06
    we have that
  • 00:50:08
law because it covers so much so you
  • 00:50:10
can't be Reckless and what does that
  • 00:50:12
mean boy there's a lot too fast not
  • 00:50:15
    driving
  • 00:50:16
straight um starting and stopping too
  • 00:50:20
quickly uh you know there's a lot of
  • 00:50:24
different ways you could be L while
  • 00:50:26
driving and the other one inattentively
  • 00:50:28
that's why we we almost didn't need a
  • 00:50:30
texting and driving bill um because or
  • 00:50:34
law um because we already had a law that
  • 00:50:37
said you can't be you can't drive
  • 00:50:39
    inattentively not paying attention but
  • 00:50:43
texting has become such a dangerous
  • 00:50:45
deadly thing that um Idaho chose to make
  • 00:50:49
it a separate clear law to really get
  • 00:50:53
the point across and I and I and I was
  • 00:50:55
part of that and I agree with that
  • 00:50:58
um so you're you know it's covered in
  • 00:51:02
two different ways one is you can't be
  • 00:51:03
    in
  • 00:51:04
attentive and two is you can't text you
  • 00:51:07
can't text while driving period uh and
  • 00:51:09
the law how it's word it is you can't R
  • 00:51:12
type or send a text message while
  • 00:51:14
driving uh and behind the wheel of the
  • 00:51:16
car that means not at a red light not at
  • 00:51:19
a stop sign uh if you pull over um fine
  • 00:51:23
but you can't be like in control of the
  • 00:51:26
vehicle in a traffic situation start
  • 00:51:28
driving or stopped can't can't do it so
  • 00:51:33
speaking of that texting and driving
  • 00:51:35
    since January 1st 2021 it's been illegal
  • 00:51:38
to use a mobile device or phone while
  • 00:51:40
    driving unless completely voice
  • 00:51:44
    controlled in 2021 distracted driving
  • 00:51:47
made up 18% of all of the crashes here
  • 00:51:49
in Idaho and caused 11% of all the
  • 00:51:51
    deaths from traffic crashes these
  • 00:51:54
distracted d driving crashes cause cost
  • 00:51:57
us $842 million taxpayers if you have a
  • 00:52:02
job you pay your taxes go up $842
  • 00:52:06
million in one year because of
  • 00:52:09
    distracted driving studies show that
  • 00:52:11
distracted driving can be six times
  • 00:52:13
    deadlier than drunk
  • 00:52:15
driving and I always will say on the
  • 00:52:19
road right now there might be depending
  • 00:52:21
on your area there might be three or
  • 00:52:22
four drunk people driving around pretty
  • 00:52:24
scary but how many people are on their
  • 00:52:26
phone or you know and have a phone right
  • 00:52:30
there uh just about 100% of them I mean
  • 00:52:34
they have a phone how many of them are
  • 00:52:35
texting I don't know but it's more than
  • 00:52:37
three or four like the drunk drivers
  • 00:52:39
    it's a a lot more so it's so common it's
  • 00:52:43
so common and it's easy to get sucked
  • 00:52:45
into it we'll talk about this later in
  • 00:52:47
the distracted driving unit but it's
  • 00:52:49
just a habit and you have to break it
  • 00:52:51
it's hard but you just it's so easy just
  • 00:52:54
to get caught up in your text because
  • 00:52:56
your mind goes somewhere else depending
  • 00:52:58
    on what the text
  • 00:52:59
is and for a second or two or five
  • 00:53:03
that's all you care about while you're
  • 00:53:06
driving um Idaho State Patrol Sergeant
  • 00:53:09
Kurt Sprout says if you're texting or
  • 00:53:12
using a device while behind the wheel of
  • 00:53:13
    a car you're not
  • 00:53:17
driving here are some controversial aaho
  • 00:53:20
laws and we'll and we'll end it here um
  • 00:53:23
because I think it's interesting to what
  • 00:53:25
the laws are and some of them I'm not
  • 00:53:26
sure we agree with but they're still
  • 00:53:28
laws so that doesn't matter um um you
  • 00:53:31
can you can still get involved you can
  • 00:53:33
still write your Congressman you can go
  • 00:53:35
still go speak about it you there are
  • 00:53:37
things you can do I shouldn't say
  • 00:53:39
there's nothing you can do about it just
  • 00:53:40
really the opposite you can if there's a
  • 00:53:42
cause that is is worth your uh time and
  • 00:53:47
effort um I just find these interesting
  • 00:53:49
    or controversial so unbelted passengers
  • 00:53:52
can ride in the back of a truck like the
  • 00:53:53
bed of a truck still in in Idaho you can
  • 00:53:56
have people in the back of your truck
  • 00:53:58
and drive around at the same time we're
  • 00:54:01
saying wearing a seat Bel is the safest
  • 00:54:03
thing you can do do to remain safe in a
  • 00:54:08
car but throw a bunch of buddies in the
  • 00:54:10
back of your truck and drive around it's
  • 00:54:11
    fine it's weird it's
  • 00:54:13
    controversial uh it's strange it's a
  • 00:54:16
    strange law second one motorcycle
  • 00:54:18
helmets are only required for those
  • 00:54:20
    under the age of
  • 00:54:21
21 it's like what the human skull is is
  • 00:54:24
is so much stronger after that that it
  • 00:54:27
it it doesn't matter anymore we know
  • 00:54:29
that's not true um because of the
  • 00:54:33
crashes and deaths that happen with
  • 00:54:35
motorcycle riders who don't wear helmets
  • 00:54:37
and even those who do it's such a and I
  • 00:54:40
rode I rode motorcycles for a while um I
  • 00:54:42
G I just stopped I had some close calls
  • 00:54:44
and realized um you're so you're so um
  • 00:54:50
    at
  • 00:54:51
risk but the law says if you're under 21
  • 00:54:54
you have to wear a helmet
  • 00:54:56
after after that you can choose uh you
  • 00:54:58
can't be pulled over and ticketed just
  • 00:55:00
for not wearing a seat belt even though
  • 00:55:01
it might be the most important thing you
  • 00:55:02
can do um it's a $10 ticket for adults
  • 00:55:06
it's called a secondary law secondary
  • 00:55:08
ticket um 10 bucks so again it's the
  • 00:55:11
most important thing you could do wear
  • 00:55:13
your seat belt and we say that over and
  • 00:55:14
    over again but in Idaho
  • 00:55:17
    it's um it's just a minor ticket so I
  • 00:55:21
find that interesting and maybe that'll
  • 00:55:22
change someday but right now if someone
  • 00:55:25
a police officer sees you not wearing a
  • 00:55:27
seat belt they can't pull you over
  • 00:55:29
unless they see something else like your
  • 00:55:31
blinker not working you you uh you don't
  • 00:55:34
have a light on your license plate frame
  • 00:55:37
so they can see your license plate or
  • 00:55:40
something then they can give you a
  • 00:55:42
ticket um for that other thing and the
  • 00:55:44
seat belt you can't drive even one mile
  • 00:55:47
per hour over the posted speed limit
  • 00:55:48
    because that's
  • 00:55:49
speeding let alone the 5 10 15 that
  • 00:55:52
other drivers that many other drivers do
  • 00:55:56
I'm not sure if that's really
  • 00:55:57
controversial but if the speed limit is
  • 00:55:59
35 you have to go 35 or less that's you
  • 00:56:01
know bicycles don't have to stop at stop
  • 00:56:04
signs again not sure that's really
  • 00:56:06
controversial uh and in an open range
  • 00:56:09
area the driver has to pay to replace a
  • 00:56:11
Wandering cow he or she hits or
  • 00:56:14
kills so keep in mind there is no doover
  • 00:56:17
there is no oops sign poor choices
  • 00:56:20
    including driving too fast distracted
  • 00:56:22
driving racing not wearing your seat
  • 00:56:24
    belt
  • 00:56:25
and other things um can be a driver's
  • 00:56:28
Last Choice so knowing the laws knowing
  • 00:56:32
how to be a safer driver is what this
  • 00:56:35
class is all about driving is amazing
  • 00:56:38
it's it's such a big important part of
  • 00:56:41
life in my opinion the ability to get up
  • 00:56:44
    and go places in a
  • 00:56:47
vehicle um I drive a convertible always
  • 00:56:50
have I take the top down when it's warm
  • 00:56:52
or even when it's not very warm and I
  • 00:56:55
just love it I just love it I'm not
  • 00:56:57
going to ruin that by being stupid and
  • 00:57:01
killing myself getting in a crash
  • 00:57:04
hurting someone else or killing someone
  • 00:57:05
else just follow the laws do do what um
  • 00:57:09
I need to do to keep safe on the road
  • 00:57:13
and it's usually just as simple as go
  • 00:57:15
the right speed pay attention that's it
  • 00:57:18
and you'll be driving for a long long
  • 00:57:20
time thanks for joining me for in this
  • 00:57:23
presentation uh I appreciate talking to
  • 00:57:25
you and hope this is an exciting thing
  • 00:57:29
for you as you move closer towards
  • 00:57:31
getting your driver's license for now
  • 00:57:32
    though Mr John's is
  • 00:57:39
    out
