interesting facts about atoria is it's

the oldest Oregon City in the history of
00:01:08
Oregon it was established and founded in
00:01:10
1811 and it's also the first permanent
00:01:14
American settlement west of the Rocky
00:01:16
Mountains so you think of the history of
00:01:18
America which isn't too long ago and
00:01:22
atoria is one of the most historic sites
00:01:25
in all of the West Coast so it was a
00:01:29
city that John Jacob Aster founded in
00:01:32
1811 as the fort atoria in 1811 that was
00:01:37
where they would do Mo most of their
00:01:39
main trading for the American Fur
00:01:41
Company so this is you know when you
00:01:44
think of all of Oregon and all of the
00:01:46
West Coast here at the mouth of the
00:01:48
Columbia River this is it and Lewis and
00:01:51
Clark in 1806 they actually camped out
00:01:55
just across um the way there at Fort
00:01:58
clup in 18 6 they wintered there and
00:02:02
that was the end of their expedition was
00:02:04
there in the atoria region so the
00:02:08
another couple things is you've got the
00:02:10
atoria um megler Bridge which is 4.1
00:02:14
miles across um the uh uh Columbia River
00:02:20
and it's the longest three trust Bridge
00:02:23
um that was built to replace the ferry
00:02:25
service that would go cold once the
00:02:28
weather was getting a little too nasty
00:02:31
so you've got all of these cool things

going on in atoria and uh that's just a

little bit of the history but when you

think of atoria you got some pros and

some cons and we're just going to go

hill for most for the most part if

overlooking either the ocean the the um

Columbia River or both um and it's

really just an amazing place um right

there on the Northern tip of the Oregon

first is going to be the historic charm

and Scenic Beauty I could go I could

list a ton of things that are are

historically relevant in atoria but I'm

just going to go through a quick list

here um when you're there you feel the

history of it you feel um I mean when

you're talking about all the West Coast

cities it's the oldest city there so

when you think of these old homes these
00:04:44
old structures buildings um Traditions

they are there in atoria and they are
00:04:50
vibrant and not only that but all of the
00:04:54
Oregon coast Beauty everything that you
00:04:56
could imagine about the Oregon coast is

within 45 minutes of asoria I mean

you're not getting the exact same as if
00:05:04
you know you drove down the entire or
00:05:05
Coast but you're getting pieces of it

whether it's Canon beach with the the
00:05:09
rocks jutting out of the ocean whether
00:05:12
it's Seaside and the Beautiful Beach

whether it's the Columbia River and all

the life and Vibrance of that River um

whether it is seeing some of the Coastal

Range up on the top of where asoria

column is there's so many things that

you see from asoria and you just get

this sense of history and uh tradition

there of the organ Coast it's it's

really Second To None when you think of

the Oregon coast just because it is the

elder Statesman of the Oregon coastal

cities so that's one of the major Pros

which is the historical charm and Scenic

Beauty there number two you have great

healthc care you've got a couple of

hosit hospitals there in Seaside and

you've got um Columbia Memorial there in

um Ator that are really going to be

great options for you and you're only

about 45 to 60 minutes from all of the

best Healthcare in Oregon which is in
00:06:16
Portland
00:06:18
so if anything you know you need to go
00:06:20
for checkups or you need to go do
00:06:22
whatever you need to do asori has some
00:06:25
very good options there and it's very
00:06:27
close to uh the Portland area so so when
00:06:30
you you think about Healthcare and needs
00:06:32
maybe retiring to the coast um those are
00:06:35
going to be some very positive things
00:06:37
when it comes to atoria the other thing
00:06:39
is you've got pretty good schools
00:06:41
whether you want to go to Napa or you
00:06:43
want to go to the atoria schools or you
00:06:45
want to go down towards um Seaside
00:06:49
warron all of those areas have great
00:06:52
schools and really good school districts
00:06:54
so if you're wanting to get out of you
00:06:56
know the major cities and get to a more
00:06:59
rural type of school district these are
00:07:02
definitely going to be the options and
00:07:03
you know the smaller the town normally
00:07:05
the smaller the more um I would say not
00:07:09
always but more conservative the school
00:07:10
district not you know saying that's good
00:07:13
or bad but that's just kind of how it
00:07:14
goes um Napa which is just about 7 miles

10 miles to the east of atoria also has
00:07:21
a really good school system and they're
00:07:22
smaller than obviously atoria number

four is there's an expanding economy

you've got tourism that's bustling the
00:07:31
fishing industry you've got some fish
00:07:33
plants that are shutting down in other
00:07:35
areas and moving to atoria you've got uh

local businesses and you've got
00:07:40
government jobs there's other things you
00:07:42
know obviously in Private Industry but
00:07:44
there's you know a bustling economy in
00:07:46
atoria that you don't always get on some
00:07:48
of the Oregon coastal cities but you
00:07:51
know you've got atoria tmook I'd say

Newport um North benus Bay those are
00:07:57
going to be like your major

uh places where you've got great jobs
00:08:03
now there's going to be the other side
00:08:05
to that in the cons but I would say

there's an expanding economy in atoria

number five is outdoor activities I mean
00:08:14
obviously on the organ Coast there's so

much to do whether it's hiking boating
00:08:19
fishing uh hunting crabbing that's maybe
00:08:22
goes with fishing Wildlife viewing
00:08:24
there's there's tons to do um if you're
00:08:28
wanting to be outside go to the beach uh
00:08:31
surfing so those actor activities
00:08:34
definitely play into the pros of asoria
00:08:37
and the last one is I've already
00:08:39
mentioned a little bit is just the
00:08:40
proximity to Portland it is nice to be
00:08:43
45 minutes to an hour away from Portland
00:08:45
in the Portland metropolitan area so

everywhere else on in Oregon you're you
00:08:51
know an hour plus from uh the Portland
00:08:55
metropolitan area you know it's just
00:08:57
nice to get over there to to whether
00:09:00
you're going to do some shopping or you
00:09:01
need to you know maybe want to go to
00:09:03
IKEA or you're going to go shopping for
00:09:05
a car or you're going to go to the
00:09:07
Portland airport um there's just a lot
00:09:10
of things in Portland that it's nice to
00:09:12
be able to quickly get there and I think
00:09:14
45 minutes to an hour really isn't that
00:09:17
big of a deal when you're thinking about
00:09:19
driving into the Portland area not being
00:09:21
a part of the Portland area but just
00:09:23
being able to get there maybe you're
00:09:24
going to a Blazer game whatever those

are the pros of living in asor some of
00:09:30
the cons limited job growth so even
00:09:32
though there is an expanding economy
00:09:35
those jobs get swallowed up pretty quick
00:09:37
and there's not lots of new jobs so if
00:09:39
you can get into the job market I think

you're going to be in a good situation

but if you're going there trying to get
00:09:45
um a job out of nowhere it might be a
00:09:48
little bit more tough the cost of living

is high I mean with a median household

income of

$70,000 and a Medi median home price of

482 and 20% of the those sell above list

price you're going to see um especially

with the inflation numbers as they are

it's going to be pretty expensive to

live there and so that's definitely

going to be one of the cons number three

is the remoteness I did say it was close

to Portland but still an hour drive to

get to a large city that's you know

somewhat tough the cool thing about the

northern Oregon coast is they have they

in Warrington which is just across the
00:10:24
river they have Costco Home Depot I
00:10:27
believe or Lowe's um they have you know
00:10:30
all of those major box stores so you
00:10:32
don't have to go to Portland to get
00:10:33
those
00:10:34
things um but it's right there in atoria
00:10:38
but if you do want to go to Portland it
00:10:40
is an hour away so it's a little bit

more remote it's on the Oregon coast it

um number four on our cons list is just
00:10:47
a small population maybe you like a lot

of people maybe you like a bustling
00:10:51
scene well you're not always going to
00:10:53
get that in asor I mean you're only
00:10:55
talking about 10,000 people and on the
00:10:57
you know when it comes to as Warrington

Napa latkan I Seaside Canon Beach it's

about 30 to 40,000 people you know so um

when you when you combine all those
00:11:08
people on the Northern or Coast it feels
00:11:10
like a large larger City but it's not
00:11:14
too big so that might be a con for you

infrastructure number five isn't great

the roads aren't great congestion um
00:11:24
need you know a lot of things need
00:11:25
updating need Paving it's not modern
00:11:28
it's not like what you would expect in a
00:11:30
metropolitan City so that can definitely

be a con for a lot of people if they
00:11:35
want to get somewhere quick or they want

nice roads not always the best on the
00:11:41
coast or the Northern or coast and
00:11:42
lastly number six of our cons is the

weather you're only getting about 120 to

125 days of sun a year you're getting

about 80 to 90 in of rain a year so

those things can be a major uh detractor
00:11:57
if you're looking to move or live on the
00:11:59
Orton Coast those are things that you're

definitely going to want to consider

when moving to atoria or anywhere on the

coast whereas Brookings it gets

so as you move South on the Oregon coast

but you got the beach you got Seaside

you got surfing you got Fort clat up

Riverwalk is always great Fort Ste

Steven State Park um you have the bow

picker fish and chips you got to go

Museum um and maybe go get something to

drink at the atoria Brewing Company

those are just some things to do if

you're just going to visit if you're
00:12:59
going there to live you'll figure that

out as time gives you the opportunity um
