    Washington DC I was in kind of a not the

    best relation relationship and I was

    looking for a fresh start I was in my

    mid 20s I wanted to move somewhere to

    really just like start over and Boulder

    Colorado seemed like a great spot to do

    that so I moved into a one-bedroom by

    myself and really wanted to dive into my
  • 00:01:14
    hobbies and just kind of start to find

    myself again so the hobby that I dove

    was freshwater aquarium builds Bachelor

    wow so I really got into freshwater

    aquarium builds I I started growing my

    plants in the freshwater aquarium so

    like all of these aquariums you see here

    those were all living plants that I grew

    underwater and just um aquarium Pebbles

    so you can kind of see where it wasn't a

    huge leap when I wanted to start

    gardening but I couldn't because I lived

    in an apartment and it was like 20

    degrees outside and it was snowing in

    Boulder Colorado so instead I turned to

    my fish tanks and built an aquaponic

    eban flow Garden for this this is my

    very very first Hydro pic Garden I ever

    made um it really filled three needs I
  • 00:02:03
    couldn't grow outside because the

    weather I didn't want to bring dirt and

    soil into my house because I have a cat
  • 00:02:08
    who loves to dig in that stuff and I

    didn't have a lot of space so I needed

    something that could you know take up a

    lot less space so I started building

    this out I ended up adding to it and it

    became a whole thing and I really really

    enjoyed the process and I really enjoyed

    growing my my plants in this so fast

    forward a few years I met the woman in

    my dreams I got married had a kid and we

    moved to the central coast in California

    one of the big pools about moving to

    California was gardening so I really

    wanted to grow outside California is

    like the gardening State that's like
  • 00:02:40
    where all the produce is grown so I was

    stoked about moving there to grow stuff

    these are my rows you see I even have my

    like little labels in there I was so

    excited about growing and then we got

    our first water

    bill and it was $300 and that was just

    for germination so I was thinking like

    if that was germination then flower ing

    would be like a $500 water bill so I

    knew that was not feasible um that was a
  • 00:03:05
    real bummer when I realized I couldn't
  • 00:03:06
    grow outside and I couldn't do my rows
  • 00:03:08
    but instead I turned to Hydroponics and
  • 00:03:11
    I turned our entire kitchen into a
  • 00:03:13
    hydroponic garden and it was way better
  • 00:03:15
    I loved it it cost us a lot less
  • 00:03:17
    obviously and I got to go into the
  • 00:03:19
    kitchen and see this beautiful you know
  • 00:03:21
    cucumbers and peppers and everything
  • 00:03:23
    growing right there and no bugs were
  • 00:03:25
    getting at it it was totally clean and
  • 00:03:27
    it was just really really satisfying at
  • 00:03:28
    this point I knew
  • 00:03:30
    I was going to go all in um I was even
  • 00:03:32
    looking into going to school for
  • 00:03:34
    Hydroponics um but I was looking for
  • 00:03:36
    that opportunity to really go all in and

    when we moved back to Colorado into the
  • 00:03:40
    mountains and parked up our our 20 foot

    travel trailer I think that opportunity

    was like literally right at my doorstep

    so I gutted I turned the whole thing
  • 00:03:51
    crazy vertical Farm I had Tower Gardens
  • 00:03:54
    in like every corner there was tower
  • 00:03:56
    garden in the bathroom there was a tower
  • 00:03:57
    garden in the closet and the back corner
  • 00:04:00
    there were two there was a fog ponic
  • 00:04:02
    tower garden I had five fog ponic
  • 00:04:04
    Gardens this fog ponic deep water
  • 00:04:05
    culture garden and I really really had a
  • 00:04:09
    great time building it out they were it
  • 00:04:11
    was somewhere I spent a lot of time but

    like I said it was in Colorado in the
  • 00:04:15
    winter and all of this was maintained

    with an electric heater I think maybe
  • 00:04:19
    you can see where I'm going with this uh

    so over one weekend it got down to like

    negative2 and the heater was on way too
  • 00:04:28
    much and ended up melting and short
  • 00:04:30
    circuiting pop the breaker and the RV

    everything shut off so I came out the

    next morning and it was all
  • 00:04:38
    Frozen I was devastated guys it was
  • 00:04:41
    almost the end of Hydroponics for me of
  • 00:04:44
    gardening and just I
  • 00:04:45
    was I know you guys have have killed
  • 00:04:48
    plants before I'm sure we all have we've
  • 00:04:51
    all killed plenty of plants but but at
  • 00:04:53
    this point I just killed 135 plants at
  • 00:04:56
    the same time I have no footage of it

    because I was distraught I just turned

    around I went inside I took my

    cauliflower with me I remember I saw

    them all Frozen I grabbed the

    cauliflower head that was almost ready

    and I brought into my wife Frozen and

    put it on the table and it just sounded

    like you know Frozen cauliflower hitting

    the table and she just looked at me and

    knew that I was just done and at that

    point I had a decision to make and um

    instead of give Throwing It All Away I

    decided to do the exact opposite I

    started humble growth Hydroponics I

    started everything I'm doing now I

    styrofoam disc filled with lettuce uh

    basically checked back a month later and

    said it was Gourmet uh quality lettuce

    and started writing papers about
  • 00:07:47
    non-passive circulating Hydroponics
  • 00:07:49
    which means let's go over that real
  • 00:07:51
    quick

    non-passive that means that I'm non-
  • 00:07:55
    passive what am I saying non-circulating
  • 00:07:57
    passive Hydroponics so non-circulating
  • 00:08:00
    means the water's not moving so there's
  • 00:08:03
    no air pumps there's no air Stones
  • 00:08:04
    nothing's plugged in this this Garden
  • 00:08:07
    doesn't require electricity or anything
  • 00:08:09
    once it's set up completely passive
  • 00:08:11
    that's the second part passive
  • 00:08:13
    Hydroponics

    so once you get these Gardens set up
  • 00:08:18
    it's a set it and forget it it's a
  • 00:08:19
    really really cool Garden in that way

    and that's why they're becoming so

    popular uh there's a few things to know

    about the principles of setting one of
  • 00:08:26
    these Gardens up though now the
  • 00:08:28
    principles are you take a vat of
  • 00:08:30
    nutrient water you put your plant in top
  • 00:08:33
    the nutrient water becomes absorbed or
  • 00:08:35
    evaporates at the same rate that the
  • 00:08:37
    plant is growing by the time the plant
  • 00:08:39
    is matured the water is in the lower
  • 00:08:42
    third and you have a lot of air there
  • 00:08:44
    for the roots to absorb then your roots
  • 00:08:46
    are Harvest or I'm sorry then your plant
  • 00:08:47
    is harvested and you start all over
  • 00:08:49
    again great technique you can set it and
  • 00:08:52
    forget it you can set up a five gallon
  • 00:08:53
    jug Dr kakie has um trash cans that he's
  • 00:08:57
    filled and done cucumbers out of and
  • 00:08:59
    once you can manage to wrap your mind
  • 00:09:01
    around the principles and the science of
  • 00:09:03
    the crackie method it really is a very
  • 00:09:04
    cool way of growing things but there are
  • 00:09:06
    some areas where people do get it wrong
  • 00:09:08
    and I want to help you guys to avoid
  • 00:09:10
    those spots so the wrong siiz container
  • 00:09:12
    is a big is a big uh a big spot where
  • 00:09:15
    people mess up I did when I was first
  • 00:09:17
    starting off it's it's a steep learning
  • 00:09:18
    curve with that because your plant will
  • 00:09:20
    kind of just stop growing um if you're
  • 00:09:22
    growing something that's fast growing
  • 00:09:25
    then you can have a smaller container
  • 00:09:26
    you're growing something that's going to
  • 00:09:28
    take a lot longer and go through like a
  • 00:09:29
    flowering stage then you're going to
  • 00:09:31
    want a larger container so if you're
  • 00:09:34
    let's think about it like this if you're
  • 00:09:35
    going to eat the leaves of it you can
  • 00:09:37
    stick with something smaller up to a
  • 00:09:39
    five gallon bucket if you're going to
  • 00:09:41
    eat the fruit off of it then you're
  • 00:09:43
    going to want to go larger like a trash
  • 00:09:46
    can okay not checking your pH just
  • 00:09:48
    because it's passive doesn't mean you
  • 00:09:50
    you don't have to check your pH at all
  • 00:09:52
    there are many things that can throw
  • 00:09:53
    your pH off and once that gets thrown
  • 00:09:56
    off bad things start to happen we're
  • 00:09:58
    going to go over that here shortly when

    we talk about pH um this is really just
  • 00:10:01
    kind of the problems uh I'm going to

    give you the solutions throughout the
  • 00:10:05
    entire course here actually so this

    these are problems that happen with
  • 00:10:08
    pretty much every hydroponic garden so
  • 00:10:10
    uh didn't really think about that
  • 00:10:13
    but uh one thing you can do also with
  • 00:10:15
    your crackie Gardens is ADD hydrogen
  • 00:10:17
    peroxide and do this from the very start
  • 00:10:19
    if you don't add it initially then for
  • 00:10:21
    the first week or two your plants might
  • 00:10:23
    not have enough oxygen to really get
  • 00:10:25
    going at this point the water is going
  • 00:10:27
    to be almost to the very top you really
  • 00:10:28
    just want to leave a small space of air
  • 00:10:31
    between the top of the water and the net
  • 00:10:34
    pot uh for the roots when they're young
  • 00:10:36
    but you also want to make sure that
  • 00:10:38
    they're going to get wet enough so you
  • 00:10:39
    don't want your roots to dry out so
  • 00:10:41
    that's a fine balance but if you add
  • 00:10:42
    hydrogen peroxide that puts air into the
  • 00:10:45
    water we're going to have a whole
  • 00:10:46
    section on hyd hydrogen peroxide
  • 00:10:48
    momentarily but what that does is it
  • 00:10:49
    puts air into the water so that even the
  • 00:10:51
    roots that are in the water are getting
  • 00:10:53
    significantly more air and are better
  • 00:10:55
    off for it so algae and root rot we're

    going to touch on those here in just a

    little bit let's get into the next type

    of garden deep water cultures it might

    seem as though a deep water culture is

    just a cracky garden with an air pump

    and an AirStone but once once we step

    away from cracky Gardens we're actually

    stepping away from the cracky method and
  • 00:11:16
    that's an entire method for how we

    Garden which is passive which means we

    don't do much just check our pH right

    once we step away from passive gardening
  • 00:11:24
    then we're going to be moving into a
  • 00:11:26
    world of active gardening so just

    because add an AirStone that's not the
  • 00:11:31
    only difference between a dwc and a
  • 00:11:33
    crackie dwc's aren't passive hydroponic

    so we need to implement active
  • 00:11:37
    hydroponic methods for gardening this

    means for every Garden moving forward

    we're GNA have to implement top offs so

    we need to make sure that we're now

    maintaining a water line and we're
  • 00:11:49
    mixing our nutrients putting them in

    there checking the ph and making sure

    that's set to an appropriate water line

    we're no longer going to let the water

    evaporate and concentrate so deep water

    cultures add air to the water through

    the AirStone so that's how the the

    plants root is getting is getting uh air

    even though it's completely submerged in

    water the whole time also the AirStone

    hang are suspended in air while nutrient

    that aeroponic at all because it's not a

    few years back just using PVC pipe and

    sprinkler heads and low pressure

    aeroponics you see the root suspended in

    air and these sprinkler heads are

    delivering smaller drops of water to the

    roots but there's no lie in saying that

    these are going to get soaking wet I

    mean the roots don't see more air Than

    what I learned so that if you guys want

    little brother there are three huge

    reasons why fog ponics is not like high

    those right now so number one the

    droplet size uh fog ponics uses a

    ceramic ultrasonic fogger so what this

    does is it vibrates at an ultrasonic

    frequency and the water on top then

    separates molecular and when it

    separates it becomes vapor and that

    Vapor goes wherever you send it frankly

    um the problem is is the droplet size of

    that vapor is only three to five microns

    that's one tenth of the amount of

    basically one tenth of the amount of

    water in the air as you're receiving

    with high pressure aeroponics that would

    be okay if we could run these for longer

    to allow the roots to get more wet over

    a period of time but there are issues

    there one being that there's not that

    much oxygen within the fog itself self a

    lot of the fog takes up the space for

    the oxygen so you can have your roots in

    the fog but they're going to see um some

    growth issues because they're not

    getting enough oxygen the other issue is

    that the ultrasonic fogger heats up so

    if you try to leave it in the water and

    just let it run so that they get wet

    the water and that causes huge issues

    so EC measures the electrical

    Integrity of your nutrient solution by

    so when you look up what PH your plant's

    going to need make sure you type in for

    a hydroponic garden if you don't then

    funny thing is is there's only one thing

    that you need to do to prevent root rot

    that's it just one thing because root

    rot really is a blanket term

    for any type of fungus or bacteria that

    can Thrive and grow on your roots but

    thing to know is that these types of

    fungus and bacteria can only live uh in

    does is it's it's hungry it starves your

    particularly bad for early growth you

    might see on your garden your tower

    garden in particular where all your

    plants are doing well but you will have

    like this one plant that's just sitting

    in like this goo of algae and the AL is

    just stealing the nutrients from the

    plant before it can take them so

    um prevention is the best key for algae

    you can't really get rid of it other

    than covering it up and waiting for it

    to die but prevention is really the key

    with algae so now let's talk about when

    we get our plants um to maturity when

    some tricks and some hacks these are

    when you start your garden that should

    be the same source that you use

    throughout the entire grow what I mean

    by that is if you use tap water when you

    through the entire grow don't switch to

    filter water this is because your plant

    has grown accustomed to what's in that

    and then you switch it over to um fil

    effect on all the other nutrients like

    one can look like something totally

    different they can be very deceiving you

    know a deficiency in Sulfur can actually

    look like a deficiency in nitrogen a

    deficiency in calcium could actually

    look like a deficiency in nitrogen again

    so you really don't know um what is

    happening unless you know what's really

    in the water so yellow leaves usually

    has to do with a nitrogen or a magnesium

    that deficiency it's another nutrient
