00:00:00
Look at the camera. Hold this and go.
00:00:04
Okay.
00:00:06
Life lessons from a centinarian. Hair
00:00:09
and makeup. You look good, Mom. How many
00:00:12
times have you been challenged with a
00:00:14
lady who's almost 101? I'm
00:00:17
102. We discovered to our surprise. How
00:00:20
does it feel to be 102? I feel like a
00:00:25
million dollars.
00:00:28
I don't feel 107. I feel more in my 80s
00:00:32
and 90s. I'm not sure what it is that
00:00:35
helps me to keep going. A corny thing
00:00:39
called positive thinking. I never gave
00:00:42
up. If I had something that I wanted to
00:00:45
do, I was persistent. I have no idea
00:00:48
what made me live so long except I've
00:00:50
never drunk coffee. People say, "What is
00:00:53
your secret?" Like it's some big secret.
00:00:56
You've learned so much. You've known so
00:00:59
much and you want to share it. Well, I
00:01:02
feel like a movie
00:01:04
[Music]
00:01:08
star. My childhood was during the Great
00:01:11
Depression. Nothing came easy to me. I
00:01:14
was a dancer employed by the United
00:01:18
States government to dance for the
00:01:21
soldiers. I mean, it was big. My
00:01:25
original goal was to be an English
00:01:27
teacher and that wasn't quite my um
00:01:31
dish. I grew up in a church. I taught
00:01:34
vacation Bible school when I was a
00:01:37
teenager. In my day, you stayed home,
00:01:41
you had your children, and you stood by
00:01:44
your husband. And we've been in a
00:01:46
revolution ever since.
00:01:48
World War II made a tremendous
00:01:51
difference in that women finally were
00:01:54
recognized as having formal
00:01:57
capabilities. I enlisted in the Navy on
00:02:02
Pearl Harbor Day. The people of the
00:02:04
United States will not stand idly by.
00:02:08
Being of the Jewish faith, we knew what
00:02:11
Hitler was doing to the Jewish people in
00:02:13
Germany. I was worried he could conquer
00:02:17
the United States as well. June 6th,
00:02:19
1944.
00:02:21
Hitler was working. So, we felt it and I
00:02:26
lost several
00:02:28
relatives and that was
00:02:32
terrible. If it was up to me, I would
00:02:35
have continued my career in the Navy.
00:02:39
But my wife Betty, and I don't blame
00:02:41
her, she says, "No, I want you to leave
00:02:43
a normal life." And that started my
00:02:47
career as a dentist. I truly always
00:02:52
enjoyed what I did. I was a certified
00:02:56
director of patient accounts at a major
00:03:00
hospital. I worked at a real estate loan
00:03:03
and insurance office. Did you enjoy your
00:03:07
Yes, because that's where I met my
00:03:09
husband. He came in one day and wanted
00:03:12
to know if I'd like to go play miniature
00:03:14
golf with him. And what did you say? And
00:03:16
I did. Mhm.
00:03:24
Do you have marriage advice?
00:03:27
A marriage what advice? Oh, let me see.
00:03:32
cuz it's important. It's so important to
00:03:36
feel love. Love is um a strong feeling.
00:03:42
I won't say it makes the world go round,
00:03:46
but it's very helpful. Love has more
00:03:48
meaning than the sexual portion of love.
00:03:51
I met my husband and I knew that I would
00:03:55
marry him. He just was
00:03:59
verbal. And of course, I'm verbal, so it
00:04:02
was a good uh match. A likemindedness is
00:04:07
the foundation of a solid marriage. You
00:04:11
agree and you're on the same page and
00:04:14
you want to live your life together and
00:04:17
that is love.
00:04:22
Most challenging thing about being a
00:04:25
100 and sometimes time hangs heavy on
00:04:29
your
00:04:32
hands. I don't have any of my good
00:04:37
friends that are still alive. They're
00:04:40
all
00:04:42
gone. My wife passed away just 20 years
00:04:46
ago this year.
00:04:50
much too early. She should be here with
00:04:52
me, sitting right here, right now. I was
00:04:55
passionate about my doubt. I wanted her
00:04:57
to doubt with me.
00:04:59
I miss my husband. I was married to him
00:05:03
for 82 wonderful years. No, I'm sorry.
00:05:09
85. And I lost two sons. I just lost one
00:05:14
a few weeks ago. My oldest son, he was
00:05:18
82 when he
00:05:20
died. I'm just shocked that I would
00:05:23
still be here and they're
00:05:25
[Music]
00:05:28
gone. At my age, I think every every
00:05:32
step you take is
00:05:35
challenging. I feel I'm on borrowed
00:05:37
time.
00:05:42
My husband
00:05:44
Paul was a remarkable sensitive
00:05:48
person. We were married 67 years when he
00:05:52
passed away. And the truth is I miss him
00:05:56
every
00:05:59
day. I had a special life because I had
00:06:01
an incredible husband.
00:06:04
It's very tough at this stage of the
00:06:07
game to be
00:06:09
alone, be
00:06:11
vulnerable, and be
00:06:17
dependent. I'm the last man
00:06:21
standing. It is not easy at
00:06:24
all. If I sat around and grieved all day
00:06:27
long, that would be very difficult to
00:06:29
take. I know that life goes on and
00:06:32
that's the only answer I can give you.
00:06:35
Life goes
00:06:37
on. So get on and do the things that you
00:06:41
love to
00:06:45
do. What has changed the most in a 100
00:06:48
years? A great deal has changed. I would
00:06:51
say the internet. Is it true that you're
00:06:55
on YouTube? my whole generation. We
00:07:00
don't know how to handle it. I see all
00:07:03
these young people walking down the
00:07:05
street holding phones. We're scared of
00:07:08
it. Everybody's got one but me and we
00:07:11
don't like it. I don't use a phone here
00:07:14
because I I I just don't. It's just like
00:07:18
going in a dark room and trying to find
00:07:21
something.
00:07:24
Wow. Amazing how much garbage gets on
00:07:27
your computer. It used to be that if you
00:07:30
wanted to know the answer to something,
00:07:31
you'd have to go to the library and do a
00:07:34
great deal of research to find out about
00:07:37
something. Today, with a snap of your
00:07:39
fingers, the internet has that answer
00:07:41
for
00:07:43
you. Done.
00:07:49
I'm at the computer a great deal.
00:07:52
Oh, I think technology if used properly
00:07:56
has definitely made a huge
00:07:59
difference. The ability to reach out to
00:08:03
one another, getting emails, sending
00:08:07
emails. So, yes, technology has changed
00:08:11
and improved and given us better chances
00:08:15
in life.
00:08:17
The important thing is for us to utilize
00:08:20
these
00:08:21
inventions properly and carefully, not
00:08:25
to use them in a bad
00:08:28
way. I'm going to do my
00:08:31
exercises.
00:08:33
One,
00:08:35
two,
00:08:37
three, four. What has helped you live to
00:08:41
100? I've never smoked. I've never drank
00:08:43
to excess. I love the outdoors. I
00:08:47
suggest 1 hour a day of
00:08:51
strenuous exercise. Guard your health.
00:08:55
It's a precious gift. Lot of stretching,
00:08:58
lot of kicking to walk, walk, walk.
00:09:04
A real workout that will keep you going
00:09:08
and that will keep you
00:09:10
alive. We have a bike here.
00:09:14
I go on and I try to stay on that bike
00:09:17
for 15 to 20 minutes and to keep my legs
00:09:22
in healthy form. I can feel it in my
00:09:25
body. The muscles are not what they
00:09:28
were.
00:09:30
You can wait, Grandma. You wait till you
00:09:31
finish there. Start at an early age and
00:09:35
eat
00:09:37
properly. Watch your
00:09:39
diet. Don't get overweight. There was a
00:09:42
period of time when I put weight on and
00:09:45
I regret that very much. I don't eat
00:09:49
meat to excess, but I do have chicken
00:09:52
which I like very much. I stay away from
00:09:56
bacon and things like that as much as
00:09:59
possible. A lot of protein. Steak every
00:10:03
night if you
00:10:08
can. My attitude
00:10:11
is don't let the old man
00:10:14
in. I refuse to think old. If you think
00:10:19
young, more than likely you're going to
00:10:21
act young. There's always something on
00:10:24
my plate that I look forward to doing.
00:10:27
And I think that's u important for
00:10:30
people to look forward to what you can
00:10:33
do today that makes a difference.
00:10:37
[Music]
00:10:40
I like
00:10:41
games. It keeps my mind
00:10:44
active. I play and I do pretty well. Oh,
00:10:50
for the triple word. Thank you. Two
00:10:53
more. You got to keep seven.
00:10:56
Oh, I have many, many friends who help
00:10:59
me enjoy life from all different
00:11:03
generations. the 60s, the 70s, 80s,
00:11:08
90s. And that's what makes life so
00:11:12
interesting because you're feeling the
00:11:15
responses of different generations to
00:11:18
problems.
00:11:21
Do you have any money advice for young
00:11:25
generations?
00:11:27
Yes. Buy land. Is that what you did? No.
00:11:32
I'm terribly bad about money. I'm just
00:11:35
ignorant and
00:11:38
helpless. Make an investment. Even if
00:11:40
you want to start small,
00:11:43
patience to achieve what in the long run
00:11:46
is the best for you. The stock market
00:11:50
goes up and down, but in the long run,
00:11:52
the stock market always goes up. If you
00:11:55
watch the pennies, then when you need
00:11:58
the dollars for a down payment on that
00:12:02
house, you've got them. Don't go to the
00:12:05
bank and put it in a savings account
00:12:08
that gives you 2% interest. Put it in a
00:12:10
good solid stock. And a mutual fund is
00:12:14
probably your best bet.
00:12:17
So, what's the secret for a long happy
00:12:20
life? Oh, I think just love life.
00:12:25
It's a
00:12:27
devotion to my family, to the ones I
00:12:31
love. What matters most to me today is
00:12:35
the welfare of my family members. How
00:12:39
are they doing? Yes. Busy, busy lives.
00:12:45
If I have a purpose, it's to help my
00:12:48
family.
00:12:53
If you don't complain, you don't make
00:12:56
life difficult for whoever is around
00:12:58
you, you'll get along in life. You want
00:13:01
to be attached to the things that are
00:13:04
positive and good in life. You have to
00:13:08
ignore the negative. Just forget it. The
00:13:12
thing that I've really learned not to be
00:13:15
so
00:13:16
selfentered. You can't get anywhere in
00:13:18
life till you start doing things for
00:13:21
other people. Giving is a real joy. Do
00:13:25
unto others as you would have them do
00:13:29
unto you.
00:13:35
I think if you're nice to people that it
00:13:39
comes back to you.
00:13:41
[Music]
00:13:45
And I
00:13:46
believe so many things that I pray for,
00:13:50
I get answers.
00:13:52
That's why I have longevity.
00:13:56
[Music]
00:13:58
Call elderly people, come and see
00:14:02
them. I think that that's such a
00:14:04
wonderful thing for people to
00:14:08
do. Not to forget people that are older.
00:14:18
As far as I'm concerned, I let my
00:14:21
feelings be heard in the form of a
00:14:26
book. I hate the pictures. The kids had
00:14:28
been after me for many years. Oh. To
00:14:32
write my memoir. And so that makes me
00:14:35
feel good that the lessons in life are
00:14:37
in that book.
00:14:40
As I sit here with you
00:14:43
today, I don't feel like my days are
00:14:46
numbered. I feel that that I have good
00:14:49
years in front of me
00:14:52
yet. Can I scratch my nose? Yes. I
00:14:57
didn't know if I was on camera or not. I
00:15:00
can just barely hear you. Why don't you
00:15:03
stand over there? You want me to speak
00:15:05
now? Pie's on the camera.
