00:00:00
welcome to episode 2 of eqa GCSE history
00:00:02
the first world war in our last episode
00:00:04
we explored the alliance system and the
00:00:06
outbreak of the first world war in this
00:00:08
episode we will explore the early onset
00:00:10
of the war stalemate and crucial
00:00:13
battles following the July crisis which
00:00:16
led to the start of the war Germany
00:00:18
found itself in a dangerous position
00:00:19
sandwiched between two large militaries
00:00:21
the French and the Russians but Germany
00:00:23
had a plan general vlien of the German
00:00:26
Army created the SLI plan intended to
00:00:29
invade France as as fast as possible
00:00:30
before Russia could mobilize its forces
00:00:33
the plan required a rapid invasion of
00:00:35
Belgium to encircle Paris and capitulate
00:00:37
France theoretically after defeating the
00:00:39
French the Germans can send the Army
00:00:41
East to deal with Russia let's take a
00:00:43
look at the timeline of the July crisis
00:00:44
of 1914 as we saw in the last episode on
00:00:47
the 28th of June the heir of the austr
00:00:49
Hungarian Throne France Fernand and his
00:00:51
wife were assassinated by a Bosnian
00:00:52
nationalist in Sako austrial Hungary
00:00:55
believing that Serbia was behind it and
00:00:56
with the backup of the German Empire
00:00:58
sent a humiliating ultimate on the 23rd
00:01:00
of July 5 days later despite Serbia
00:01:03
agreeing to almost all demands austrial
00:01:05
Hungary declared a war on Serbia on the
00:01:07
30th of July Russia began mobilizing its
00:01:09
troops on the 1st of August Germany
00:01:11
declared war on Russia 2 Days Later
00:01:13
Germany invaded Belgium which led to
00:01:15
France declaring war on Germany the next
00:01:17
day Britain which was guaranteeing
00:01:19
Belgian Independence after the 1839
00:01:21
Treaty of London declared war on Germany
00:01:24
and finally 2 Days Later austrial
00:01:26
Hungary declared war on Russia so
00:01:29
Germany found its s surrounded by
00:01:30
Britain France and Russia but if you
00:01:32
remember they had a plan the schen plan
00:01:35
let's take a look at why this didn't
00:01:37
happen first the Germans didn't
00:01:39
anticipate any level of Belgian
00:01:40
resistance the Germans needed a Swift
00:01:42
and accurate advance for the plan to
00:01:44
succeed which the Belgian Army and
00:01:46
people did not allow although Germany
00:01:49
Advanced heavy Belgian resistance and
00:01:51
Guerilla Warfare led to frustration for
00:01:52
many in the German Army who resorted to
00:01:55
the inhumane and brutal treatment of
00:01:57
Belgian civilians after the Belgian
00:01:59
delayed German advances the French
00:02:01
activated plan 177 a strategy that saw
00:02:03
France launch an allout attack across
00:02:05
the Franco German border into the
00:02:07
formerly held territory of alen Lorraine
00:02:10
this attack was a disaster with the
00:02:11
French losing 200,000 troops in 12 days
00:02:14
but these attacks still delayed German
00:02:16
advances finally the British
00:02:18
expeditionary force or the bef also
00:02:21
helped slow down the German Advance
00:02:23
these British forces were well trained
00:02:25
and well equipped which caused
00:02:26
significant delays and supported the
00:02:28
French efforts to mount a the defense by
00:02:30
September 1914 everything was on the
00:02:32
line as the Germans had made progress
00:02:34
but began slowing down however to
00:02:37
everyone's surprise the Russians
00:02:38
mobilized their forces far quicker than
00:02:40
anyone expected and started successfully
00:02:42
invading Germany and austrial Hungary
00:02:44
because of this Germany had to move an
00:02:46
estimated 100,000 troops from the West
00:02:48
to the east since the Schon plan was out
00:02:50
of the window Germany prepared an allout
00:02:53
attack against France as the French and
00:02:55
British troops mounted their defenses
00:02:57
near Paris Germany successfully pushed
00:02:59
through Belgium reaching the river M
00:03:01
only 48 km from the French capital of
00:03:03
Paris General von cluck of the right
00:03:05
wing of the German forces had received
00:03:07
an order to attack around the west and
00:03:09
south of Paris to encircle the French
00:03:11
and British armies instead he decided to
00:03:14
turn to his right flank to encounter the
00:03:16
sixth French army this action proved a
00:03:18
mistake exposing a gap in the German
00:03:20
Advance the French and British
00:03:22
expeditionary Force exploited this error
00:03:24
forcing the German line to fall back
00:03:26
where German soldiers successfully dug
00:03:28
in ready to defend themselves this led
00:03:30
to a stable Western Front filled with
00:03:31
tunnels barbed wire and trenches from
00:03:34
the English Channel to the Swiss Alps by
00:03:36
1915 these complex tunnel systems led to
00:03:39
trench warfare the German French and
00:03:41
British armies had perfected the
00:03:43
defensive positions by digging deep
00:03:45
trenches with dugouts battling between
00:03:47
both sides became quite repetitive
00:03:50
armies were heavily fortified with
00:03:51
barbed wire lines long range artillery
00:03:53
and machine guns separated by no man's
00:03:56
land after hours days or even weeks of
00:03:59
artil bombardment soldiers would leave
00:04:01
their positions to attempt to take
00:04:02
control of enemy trenches if this wasn't
00:04:05
hard and horrifying enough the Germans
00:04:07
introduced the use of poison gas in 1915
00:04:10
while tanks were first used by the
00:04:12
British in 1916 aeroplanes also played a
00:04:15
role in this type of warfare but we will
00:04:17
discuss these type of developments in
00:04:19
the next episode as you can imagine
00:04:21
living and fighting in these trenches
00:04:23
was a horrible experience although
00:04:24
soldiers attempted to lighten up the
00:04:26
Mood by making friends playing football
00:04:28
and other midwar activities after
00:04:30
watching fellow soldiers and Friends die
00:04:32
and being in constant danger and fear
00:04:34
multiple soldiers suffered from horrific
00:04:36
experiences as many were left shell
00:04:38
shocked and suffered from PTSD after
00:04:40
returning
00:04:42
home this type of warfare was not by
00:04:44
choice both sides preferred a faster and
00:04:47
more mobile War but both giant armies
00:04:49
were already
00:04:51
stationed Soldiers barraged by constant
00:04:54
artillery and machine gun fire found it
00:04:56
impossible to break each other's
00:04:57
defenses leading to heavy death to for
00:05:00
both sides on the Western Front this
00:05:01
type of battle led to a war of attrition
00:05:03
which is a war where both sides try to
00:05:05
wear each other out until they win it
00:05:07
was clear that this type of trench
00:05:08
warfare and the war of attrition would
00:05:10
benefit no one especially the soldiers
00:05:13
suffering from the nightmarish
00:05:14
conditions of the
00:05:16
trenches the British were aware of that
00:05:18
and looked outside of Europe for answers
00:05:20
in November 1914 the Ottoman Empire
00:05:22
declared war against the powers of the
00:05:24
triple anant joining the Central Powers
00:05:26
opening a new front for the Russians in
00:05:28
the now World War
00:05:31
around the same time Weston Churchill
00:05:32
proposed an attack outside of the
00:05:34
Western Front the plan was to attack
00:05:36
this area in Turkey known as the dard
00:05:38
danels captur Constantinople and removed
00:05:40
the Ottoman Empire relieving a Russian
00:05:43
front and significantly weakening the
00:05:45
Central Powers this campaign however
00:05:47
couldn't have gone any
00:05:49
worse like the Germans in the schen plan
00:05:52
the British needed a swift Naval
00:05:54
Invasion to defeat and collapse the
00:05:55
ottoman opposition however major
00:05:57
logistical issues and a lack of planning
00:05:59
turned the campaign from Hope to
00:06:02
disaster the soldiers Landing in
00:06:04
galipoli belonged to the 29th British
00:06:06
Division and the Australian and New
00:06:08
Zealand Army corpse or azac for short
00:06:12
mirroring the Western Front trench
00:06:13
warfare quickly took hold at gly the hot
00:06:16
summer Shores saw countless rotting
00:06:18
bodies and with them agonizing smells
00:06:21
diseases and millions of
00:06:23
flies hundreds of thousands of soldiers
00:06:26
died on both sides and ultimately the
00:06:28
British failed to conquer the Turkish
00:06:30
Peninsula the campaign officially ended
00:06:33
in January 1916 after the British forces
00:06:36
evacuated after this failure both sides
00:06:38
attempted to finish the war on the
00:06:39
Western Front with large bloody and
00:06:42
critical Battles by the start of 1916
00:06:45
Germany had been successful in most of
00:06:46
its battles but victory was nowhere
00:06:48
closer than two years before with
00:06:50
growing tensions and expectations back
00:06:52
home Germany needed a new strategy
00:06:55
Germany believed that if France would be
00:06:57
struck with a shattering blow they would
00:06:59
eventually ask Britain and Germany for
00:07:00
peace in the Battle of Verdun Germany
00:07:03
used the TR tactics to capture the
00:07:05
strategically insignificant but
00:07:07
historically important Fortress of
00:07:08
Verdun in February 1916 therefore the
00:07:12
French forces did not give up this fort
00:07:14
easily after a bloody Battle of
00:07:16
attrition both sides savagely attacked
00:07:18
each other with no remorse making heavy
00:07:20
use of artillery poison gas and
00:07:23
flamethrowers the Battle of Verdun was a
00:07:25
great victory for the French but
00:07:27
destroyed a huge chunk of the army it
00:07:29
was the first undeniable setback for the
00:07:32
Germans which further intensified
00:07:33
tensions with the starving civilian
00:07:36
population at the same time in 1916
00:07:38
Britain planned an assault to help pull
00:07:40
German soldiers away from attacking the
00:07:42
French at berdun the Battle of the sum
00:07:44
which started in July 1916 saw the
00:07:46
British learning from the failed
00:07:48
galipoli Landing this time with
00:07:50
meticulous preparation for the battle
00:07:51
during a whole week before the attack
00:07:53
the British fired around a million and a
00:07:55
half shells of artillery however many of
00:07:57
these shells were duts and the world
00:07:59
Doug German soldiers avoided much of the
00:08:01
Colossal bombardment when the British
00:08:03
soldiers came out of the trenches to
00:08:05
attack they were unexpectedly faced with
00:08:07
heavy
00:08:08
fire 20,000 British soldiers died on the
00:08:11
first day of this battle which became
00:08:13
the deadliest day in the history of the
00:08:15
British army this battle saw the Allies
00:08:18
lose around 600,000 men with the Germans
00:08:21
experiencing similar losses all for an
00:08:23
advancement of 16 km of land
