As someone who has PCOS and has
  • 00:00:01
    struggled with gaining weight, losing
  • 00:00:03
weight, gaining weight, losing weight, I
  • 00:00:05
think I've been very transparent over
  • 00:00:06
the years and always will continue to
  • 00:00:08
be. Weight gain and dealing with my PCOS
  • 00:00:10
is not something that was easy for me. I
  • 00:00:12
really struggled for a very long time
  • 00:00:14
with it. And to be honest, I still do to
  • 00:00:16
this day. I like to make these yearly
  • 00:00:18
updates of my PCOS journey because I
  • 00:00:20
    truthfully believe that being
  • 00:00:21
transparent is the number one key to
  • 00:00:24
allowing other people not to feel alone.
  • 00:00:26
When I first got diagnosed with PCOS, I
  • 00:00:28
feel like it was not spoken a lot about
  • 00:00:29
and there was a lot of videos online
  • 00:00:31
kind of knowing what it was, but not
  • 00:00:33
really knowing what it was at all.
  • 00:00:35
Basically, the only reason I learned
  • 00:00:36
what it was was from my doctor and doing
  • 00:00:38
research. It was not something that I
  • 00:00:40
heard a lot of people talk about or
  • 00:00:41
advocate for and try to make awareness
  • 00:00:44
for. And that's when I really decided to
  • 00:00:46
start my YouTube channel back in 2018. I
  • 00:00:48
wanted to be someone who could really
  • 00:00:50
inspire others and really just be there
  • 00:00:53
to be that guiding hand and help someone
  • 00:00:56
who may be going through the same thing
  • 00:00:57
as me or a similar situation as me.
  • 00:00:59
Before I get any further into this
  • 00:01:01
video, I do want to say I'm not
  • 00:01:02
certified in anything that I'm talking
  • 00:01:04
about and I want to make that very
  • 00:01:06
clear. This is about my own personal
  • 00:01:08
story and just keep in mind that what
  • 00:01:10
worked for me may not work for you. But
  • 00:01:12
with that being said, PCOS has been
  • 00:01:13
something that I really did not have a
  • 00:01:15
good time with growing up. I got
  • 00:01:17
diagnosed back in 2018 and it was a very
  • 00:01:19
hard diagnosis. I like I said did not
  • 00:01:22
know what it was and also I feel like
  • 00:01:23
there was not enough research at least
  • 00:01:25
at that time or from a perspective of
  • 00:01:27
the research and information I was given
  • 00:01:29
that made me feel comfortable with
  • 00:01:31
anything that was happening to me and
  • 00:01:32
comfortable might not be the right word
  • 00:01:34
but I mean this in a way of I feel like
  • 00:01:36
I have support. I feel like I am going
  • 00:01:39
to be okay. I was basically told that
  • 00:01:40
there is no cure and I was basically
  • 00:01:42
stuck in a body that I was not happy
  • 00:01:45
with. And I do not mean that from a how
  • 00:01:47
I looked perspective. I am not going to
  • 00:01:50
lie. I was not happy with how I looked.
  • 00:01:51
But it was more about how I felt inside.
  • 00:01:54
I did not feel healthy. I did not feel
  • 00:01:56
confident. I felt very very sad and I
  • 00:01:58
honestly didn't really want to do
  • 00:02:00
anything with my days. I would wake up,
  • 00:02:01
I would try to go to the gym, but it was
  • 00:02:03
very not motivating when you try to go
  • 00:02:05
to the gym and you eat right and you're
  • 00:02:07
in a calorie deficit and you're doing
  • 00:02:09
everything quote unquote on paper that
  • 00:02:10
is supposed to help you lose weight and
  • 00:02:12
get healthy and it's not working. You're
  • 00:02:14
going to doctors and you're drinking a
  • 00:02:16
lot of water. You're cutting out sugar.
  • 00:02:17
You're doing every single diet that you
  • 00:02:19
can think of and it's not working. It
  • 00:02:21
was beyond frustrating. I literally have
  • 00:02:23
no other words for it. I think of myself
  • 00:02:25
a few years ago and I look at how far
  • 00:02:27
I've come and I get so proud of myself
  • 00:02:29
sometimes because the amount of issues I
  • 00:02:31
went through to get from here, which was
  • 00:02:33
rock bottom, to here was very hard and
  • 00:02:36
it was very detrimental and it took a
  • 00:02:38
lot for me to become the person I am
  • 00:02:40
today. So, when I started my first
  • 00:02:41
YouTube video, I knew it was going to be
  • 00:02:43
something that would allow others not to
  • 00:02:45
feel alone. PCOS is something that needs
  • 00:02:47
to have more awareness and needs to have
  • 00:02:48
    more understanding. And although I
  • 00:02:51
cannot sit here and tell you exactly
  • 00:02:52
what it is, I will put a definition of
  • 00:02:54
it on the screen right here. My whole
  • 00:02:56
goal is to just make these yearly
  • 00:02:57
updates, make a yearly check-in, talk
  • 00:02:59
about my weight gain throughout the year
  • 00:03:01
to make it very known that this is an
  • 00:03:02
issue that continues to come up for me.
  • 00:03:05
Sure, I may have times where my PCOS, in
  • 00:03:07
my opinion, is stable and then I have
  • 00:03:09
what I like to call them PCOS flare-ups.
  • 00:03:12
When I have PCOS flare-ups, I am not
  • 00:03:14
happy. I trap myself in my house. I
  • 00:03:16
don't like going out. I will literally
  • 00:03:17
wake up, go to work, go to the gym, come
  • 00:03:19
home and be upset. Like I don't want to
  • 00:03:21
go out with my friends. I don't want to
  • 00:03:22
be a social butterfly. And usually I am.
  • 00:03:25
Usually I love going on adventures. I
  • 00:03:26
love going to the city. I will say yes
  • 00:03:28
to anything and everything. Like I love
  • 00:03:30
those adventures. But the second I don't
  • 00:03:33
feel confident in myself and I don't
  • 00:03:34
feel good on the inside, it really does
  • 00:03:36
start to show on the outside. And I
  • 00:03:38
think it's so important to talk about
  • 00:03:39
because even though a part of it is in
  • 00:03:41
my control, a big part of it also isn't.
  • 00:03:44
Now, I'm not going to sit here and lie
  • 00:03:45
to you and tell you I didn't have eating
  • 00:03:47
issues growing up. I did. There was
  • 00:03:49
times where I ate too little. There was
  • 00:03:50
times where I ate too much. With that
  • 00:03:52
being said, when I really put my mind to
  • 00:03:54
it, I knew what I had to do to get
  • 00:03:56
myself from here to here, rock bottom to
  • 00:03:59
what made me happy and then exceed what
  • 00:04:01
made me happy. Even though on paper I
  • 00:04:03
knew what to do, that does not mean that
  • 00:04:05
it was easy by any sense. And even
  • 00:04:07
though I believed in myself, even though
  • 00:04:08
I knew I was capable of doing it, at the
  • 00:04:10
end of the day, it really just came down
  • 00:04:11
to do I want to? Do I really have the
  • 00:04:14
motivation to keep going? Do I really
  • 00:04:15
have the determination to not give up on
  • 00:04:17
myself? And eventually I realized that
  • 00:04:19
that answer was yes. Does that mean I
  • 00:04:21
will never have a PCOS flare up in my
  • 00:04:22
life again? No. I have them quite often.
  • 00:04:25
But it does mean I am more understanding
  • 00:04:27
and can recognize when one is happening
  • 00:04:29
and fix it or kind of tweak things in my
  • 00:04:32
diet, tweak things in my workout routine
  • 00:04:34
to change those things before the PCOS
  • 00:04:36
flare up gets bad. So yes, I do have
  • 00:04:38
PCOS flare-ups to this day. Yes, it does
  • 00:04:40
make me unmotivated. Yes, it does make
  • 00:04:42
me upset and yes, I cry a lot. But I do
  • 00:04:45
know that I was once at a place where it
  • 00:04:47
was so bad. I had to lose 70 80 lbs to
  • 00:04:50
make myself healthy again. Not talking
  • 00:04:52
from a how I looked perspective. I want
  • 00:04:54
to say right now you are beautiful just
  • 00:04:55
the way you are. You do not need to
  • 00:04:57
change and that is not the point of this
  • 00:04:59
video. I'm just saying I was unhappy
  • 00:05:01
with how I felt inside. I didn't feel
  • 00:05:03
like I was healthy at all. And honestly,
  • 00:05:05
from test results that I got and
  • 00:05:07
everything I was hearing from my
  • 00:05:08
    doctors, I wasn't. I was overweight. I
  • 00:05:10
had way too much water retention in my
  • 00:05:12
body and I needed to make a change. When
  • 00:05:14
I come back now, yes, that may still
  • 00:05:16
happen. I may get flared up with water.
  • 00:05:18
I may not feel my best at times. I may
  • 00:05:20
feel a PCOS flare up coming. It's just a
  • 00:05:23
lot easier for me to control because I
  • 00:05:24
don't need to lose 80 lb. Maybe I need
  • 00:05:26
to lose 10 lbs to get healthy again. And
  • 00:05:28
even though that may be frustrating,
  • 00:05:30
especially if I feel like I'm doing
  • 00:05:31
quote unquote everything right to stay
  • 00:05:33
    healthy, it's okay. Things happen.
  • 00:05:35
Weight fluctuates all the time. And it
  • 00:05:37
is not as bad as it used to be. And the
  • 00:05:39
thing that keeps me really motivated is
  • 00:05:40
I was able to lose the 80 lbs. I did
  • 00:05:42
that in 6 months. And a lot of people
  • 00:05:44
always ask me, "How did you do that?
  • 00:05:46
That's not possible. You really could
  • 00:05:47
not have done that in 6 months." When I
  • 00:05:49
tell you I did that in 6 months, I did
  • 00:05:50
it in 6 months. This was right before
  • 00:05:52
quarantine was about to happen back in
  • 00:05:54
2019. I started going to the gym. I
  • 00:05:56
started being very consistent. Within 6
  • 00:05:58
months, I did go from 200 lb to 130. I'm
  • 00:06:01
51 for reference, so at that point, I
  • 00:06:04
still needed to lose around 10 lbs. But
  • 00:06:06
I was very happy and more comfortable
  • 00:06:07
with my body. Being in that healthy
  • 00:06:09
range weight and not really having to
  • 00:06:12
overthink what I was eating and
  • 00:06:13
everything like that made me a lot
  • 00:06:14
happier. When quarantine came around, I
  • 00:06:16
got very scared because I thought that
  • 00:06:18
not being able to go to the gym and to
  • 00:06:20
Orange Theory would really, I guess,
  • 00:06:21
alter the way my PCOS was working with
  • 00:06:24
my body. But I decided to go on runs
  • 00:06:26
every day outside. I decided to get a
  • 00:06:28
treadmill at my house. I decided to get
  • 00:06:30
weights at my house. And I continued
  • 00:06:31
    that training all throughout quarantine.
  • 00:06:33
And it really did make a difference. The
  • 00:06:35
second I did stop weight training and
  • 00:06:37
running and staying active, I instantly
  • 00:06:39
gained weight. And still to this day,
  • 00:06:40
the second I am not consistent, I will
  • 00:06:42
go in a rabbit hole and gain weight and
  • 00:06:44
my eating issues will come back.
  • 00:06:46
Consistency really is key. I'm not going
  • 00:06:48
to sit here and tell you that the only
  • 00:06:50
thing that ever worked for me was Orange
  • 00:06:52
Theory cuz that's not true. I think that
  • 00:06:53
    highintensity workouts could work for
  • 00:06:55
some people. I think that lowintensity
  • 00:06:57
workouts can work for some people. I
  • 00:06:58
think Pilates is great. For me, Pilates
  • 00:07:01
is not the type of exercise that makes
  • 00:07:02
me happy. I think that finding a healthy
  • 00:07:05
medium between things that make you
  • 00:07:06
happy with exercise and with eating and
  • 00:07:09
that balance in your life of things that
  • 00:07:11
are going to push you and keep you
  • 00:07:13
disciplined and keep you motivated is so
  • 00:07:15
    important and honestly makes the
  • 00:07:16
    difference between making a lifestyle
  • 00:07:18
change, not just, oh, I'm going on a
  • 00:07:20
diet, if that makes sense. So, now that
  • 00:07:22
I introed that and kind of gave like a
  • 00:07:23
little background, I want to talk about
  • 00:07:25
how my year has been this year. Last
  • 00:07:27
year, I posted a PCOS update video, and
  • 00:07:29
I'm not sure that anyone else is going
  • 00:07:31
to be able to see that, but if I look at
  • 00:07:32
that video, and I look at my face in
  • 00:07:34
that video, I look very inflamed. I look
  • 00:07:36
very puffy, and I look very unhappy. I
  • 00:07:39
say that in a way of that is a PCOS
  • 00:07:41
flare up. I had a 10 lb weight gain
  • 00:07:44
within 1 to two weeks, and that is very
  • 00:07:46
normal for PCOS. And all of that was
  • 00:07:49
water. One of my family members had a
  • 00:07:50
really good way of describing it. When I
  • 00:07:52
get hugged and I'm having a PCOS flare
  • 00:07:54
up, I feel like air. It feels like my
  • 00:07:56
body is just holding on to way too much
  • 00:07:58
water and I feel like a balloon. My
  • 00:07:59
family member does not mean that in a
  • 00:08:01
mean way, nor do I. That's just how I
  • 00:08:03
can describe it for somebody who maybe
  • 00:08:05
doesn't have that and doesn't really
  • 00:08:07
understand what I'm talking about. When
  • 00:08:08
I look at this video here from last
  • 00:08:10
year, that's exactly how I was feeling.
  • 00:08:12
It made perfect sense when my family
  • 00:08:14
member said that and it honestly kind of
  • 00:08:16
gave me clarity that even though I was
  • 00:08:18
doing everything right on paper, this
  • 00:08:19
was not my fault. This was something
  • 00:08:21
that my body was going through and I
  • 00:08:22
just needed to learn how to regulate.
  • 00:08:24
Fast forward, I think I stayed in a
  • 00:08:26
really bad rabbit hole and in a bad rut
  • 00:08:28
for around 6 months. Then coming up to
  • 00:08:31
my birthday on June 3rd, my birthday
  • 00:08:33
last year, I was so upset. I was looking
  • 00:08:35
at pictures. I really remembered how
  • 00:08:36
badly I wanted to make a change. And
  • 00:08:38
that's when I kind of said to myself,
  • 00:08:39
"Stop. Don't be upset. This is a flare
  • 00:08:41
up. This is fixable. This is not
  • 00:08:43
something that's not fixable. It just
  • 00:08:45
needs to be recognized." Once I realized
  • 00:08:46
that it was something that needed to be
  • 00:08:48
recognized, I really locked in. I had my
  • 00:08:51
one last day because my friend was
  • 00:08:53
throwing me a birthday party. I had what
  • 00:08:54
I wanted. I drank what I wanted. And
  • 00:08:56
then that next day, I was locked in. I
  • 00:08:58
did everything and everything I could to
  • 00:09:00
make myself happy again. I signed up
  • 00:09:01
    with a personal trainer. I followed a
  • 00:09:03
meal plan. I went to Orange Theory. And
  • 00:09:05
I stayed consistent. And I want to say
  • 00:09:07
happily from there. My weight slowly
  • 00:09:09
started to go down. But again, it really
  • 00:09:11
wasn't just about the weight. It was
  • 00:09:12
about how I was feeling inside. I'm not
  • 00:09:14
going to sit here and tell you, "Oh,
  • 00:09:15
it's so easy to stay motivated. It's so
  • 00:09:17
easy to go to the gym. It's so easy to
  • 00:09:19
just show up. It's not. Especially at
  • 00:09:21
6:00 a.m. in the morning, especially at
  • 00:09:23
9:00 p.m. at night or after school or
  • 00:09:25
after work. It is hard despite the
  • 00:09:27
situation, especially when you do not
  • 00:09:29
see results. I was not seeing results,
  • 00:09:31
at least not right away. I want to say
  • 00:09:33
for a month and a half, I saw the weight
  • 00:09:35
on the scale going down. But I was not
  • 00:09:37
seeing results. I did not feel better.
  • 00:09:38
And I honestly was so unmotivated. I
  • 00:09:41
didn't know what else to do. I wanted to
  • 00:09:42
quit every single day. But the number
  • 00:09:44
one thing I tell myself, if you stop, if
  • 00:09:46
you quit at a goal, you have to start
  • 00:09:48
over. If you fail at a goal and you
  • 00:09:50
don't quit, you don't have to start
  • 00:09:51
over. You're that much closer to
  • 00:09:53
reaching your goal. Failure is only
  • 00:09:55
failure if you stop. Failure is not
  • 00:09:57
failure. It's only a setback if you
  • 00:09:59
continue to keep growing from that
  • 00:10:01
failure. So, even though I saw the
  • 00:10:03
weight going down, but I wasn't happy
  • 00:10:04
with the results, I went to my trainer.
  • 00:10:05
I said, "Hey, I don't think that this
  • 00:10:07
meal plan is working for me. I'm also
  • 00:10:09
not happy with the food I'm putting in
  • 00:10:11
my body. I don't like it. I feel like
  • 00:10:13
I'm basically like forcing myself to
  • 00:10:14
have the meal plan. Can we tweak this?
  • 00:10:16
She was like, "Of course." And I'm a
  • 00:10:18
picky eater. I don't like a lot of
  • 00:10:19
things. We worked together. We found
  • 00:10:21
things that actually worked for my body
  • 00:10:23
and things that fueled my body and made
  • 00:10:24
me feel happy and eager to eat that
  • 00:10:27
healthy food. And that's when I started
  • 00:10:28
to see the game change. Let's say I
  • 00:10:30
didn't want to have grilled chicken
  • 00:10:31
every day. I air fried a chicken cutlet.
  • 00:10:33
    Making healthier life choices, but
  • 00:10:35
choices that are going to continue to
  • 00:10:38
allow me to keep this lifestyle. Ever
  • 00:10:40
since then, I went from 160, which is
  • 00:10:43
what I was in the video I showed from
  • 00:10:45
last year, to now, which is a healthy
  • 00:10:47
    130. And I maintained that for 7 months,
  • 00:10:50
meaning I did not have a PCOS flare up
  • 00:10:52
since last June. And I say 7 months from
  • 00:10:54
when I actually started my weight loss
  • 00:10:56
journey, but from that video, it would
  • 00:10:58
be a year. And that just makes me really
  • 00:11:00
happy because I used to go through all
  • 00:11:02
of these phases of up and down and up
  • 00:11:04
and down. I would just yo-yo. And it
  • 00:11:06
wasn't because I was really choosing to.
  • 00:11:07
It was because I felt like when I had a
  • 00:11:09
PCOS flare up, that was it. There was no
  • 00:11:11
other option. It was just happening. I
  • 00:11:13
    couldn't reverse it. I couldn't stop.
  • 00:11:14
Like the PCOS flare up just had to stop.
  • 00:11:16
It had to fix itself. Where now I know
  • 00:11:18
that's not the case. I'm not saying I
  • 00:11:19
didn't have a moment this year where I
  • 00:11:21
    didn't gain 5 lbs. That's not what I'm
  • 00:11:23
saying at all. I'm saying when I
  • 00:11:25
realized it and I knew that it was just
  • 00:11:27
border weight and a PCOS flare up, I was
  • 00:11:29
able to recognize it, tweak the change
  • 00:11:31
in my diet and my exercise and correct
  • 00:11:34
it without it being noticeable and
  • 00:11:35
without it affecting how I felt inside.
  • 00:11:38
And because of that, it did not affect
  • 00:11:39
how I felt outside. So basically, the
  • 00:11:41
whole point of this is yes, I still do
  • 00:11:43
    have PCOS flare-ups. I always will. I
  • 00:11:45
    have PCOS. Unfortunately, it's not
  • 00:11:47
curable. However, at least in my case,
  • 00:11:49
and I'm very very lucky and fortunate to
  • 00:11:51
say this, and I do not take it for
  • 00:11:53
granted, it is manageable, and I'm very
  • 00:11:55
thankful for that, and I'm very proud of
  • 00:11:56
    myself because even though it's
  • 00:11:58
manageable, it doesn't mean it's easy.
  • 00:11:59
It doesn't mean that it should be
  • 00:12:01
overlooked. Yeah, I know how to maintain
  • 00:12:03
my weight, but that doesn't mean that I
  • 00:12:04
don't face the challenges within my mind
  • 00:12:07
every single day. So, basically, when I
  • 00:12:09
get asked, "Oh, how did you lose weight
  • 00:12:10
so fast? How do you change your body?
  • 00:12:12
How do you change your perspective?" You
  • 00:12:13
change your mindset. Honestly, you show
  • 00:12:15
up. You do what's going to work for you.
  • 00:12:17
You do some form of exercise. You do a
  • 00:12:19
meal plan that is going to allow a
  • 00:12:21
lifestyle change. Same with the gym. Not
  • 00:12:23
something that feels like a diet.
  • 00:12:25
Something that makes you feel happy.
  • 00:12:27
Something that is going to fuel your
  • 00:12:28
body to make you feel like your highest
  • 00:12:30
self. And it honestly does start with
  • 00:12:32
changing your mindset. When I used to
  • 00:12:34
think of PCOS, I would really think of
  • 00:12:35
negative things and that when a flare up
  • 00:12:37
came, it was negative. I couldn't change
  • 00:12:39
it. Now when I think about it, I
  • 00:12:40
recognize the issue and then I make a
  • 00:12:42
change to fix it. The whole entire thing
  • 00:12:44
is if you believe in yourself, if you
  • 00:12:46
have the willpower to actually show up,
  • 00:12:48
be motivated, be disciplined on those
  • 00:12:50
days where it's a little bit harder, the
  • 00:12:52
change will come. It just really does
  • 00:12:54
start with mindset. And the second you
  • 00:12:56
realize that it starts with mindset,
  • 00:12:57
that it starts with that change in your
  • 00:12:59
mind, that's when the game changes. That
  • 00:13:01
is going to be it for this video. I hope
  • 00:13:02
you guys enjoyed. Let me know if you
